You are Locked on Giants, your daily San Francisco Giants podcast, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Hello and welcome to Locked On Giants, part of the Locked On podcast network, where it’s your team every single day. My name is Alen Styles. Like I said, it is a fun one for you on a Wednesday. We are talking about trade candidates. The first one, a highlight reel pitcher in Hunter Green. Next, another candidate deep dive in Roco Baldelli. And last but not least, how the Giants can improve the backup catcher situation. Today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. I got a twinkle in my eye because I love trade candidates. I love free agency. This is where we can have some fun. Obviously, I wish the Giants were still playing, don’t get me wrong, and watching the Dodgers does make me quite sick, but this is as good as it’s going to get. How the Giants can improve and make sure they are in a better spot moving forward so they can be playing this time next year. And I don’t think they’re that far. So, let’s start here with starting pitching. This is from Mark Sheldon, who covers the Cincinnati Reds, who they were the ones that snuck into that last wild card spot. Obviously, Hunter Green didn’t have a great showing against the Dodgers, but the Dodgers, they’re just on another level, man. You can’t even count what people do against that team at this point in time. Here is the quote. Uh, the Reds may be looking for more offense. Uh, and again, Mark Sheldon says they might be willing to move Hunter Green to do it. Mark Sheldon, who covers the Reds, had this to say regarding Hunter Green. Even after a a disappointing postseason debut versus the Dodgers in game one, he was on the mound in LA and people were kind of making fun of him because it didn’t go well. Green could still be an attractive trade chip in the Red’s pockets. Moving him would free up salary to sign a bat this off season or bring back a hitter in return. And a change of scenery could benefit him. Uh this can’t be a salary dump for prospects, however. If green is traded, major league talent would have to come back to make it work. Okay, that is what Mark Sheldon, who covers the Reds, had to say. If the San Francisco Giants really want to reshape their pitching staff and build around pitching and defense, uh that identity that Buster Posie keeps talking about, there might not be a better place to start than with Hunter Green. He is 26 years old and has a kind of pure upside and stuff that could instantly change the tone of the Giants rotation. You’d be looking at RP, Robbie Ray, obviously Logan Webb, and then you’re adding Hunter Green. That that’s that is a crew right there. Specifically in Oracle Park. According to MLB.com, Green remains one of the hardest throwers in the game, averaging 98.8 miles per hour on his fast ball while flashing a wipeout slider that produced a 35% whiff rate. His mix of youth, power, and team control, that’s very important, makes him one of the most intriguing trade ships in baseball heading into 2025, 2026. Why Green fits what the Giants need. Posey has said multiple times at the front office and the off season that they’re about to embark on. That focus will be pitching depth, and Green fits that perfectly. Like I said, he’s under club control through a couple years now, I believe 2028 or 2029, thanks to the six-year $53 million extension. He signed with Cincinnati. meaning he’s both affordable and controllable. Two words that matter to a Giants team still navigating a mid to high tier payroll. This year, Green made a legitimate leap forward. He finished the 2025 regular season with a 275 ERA, 169 strikeouts, and uh he pitched over or he pitched 150 and a third innings, earning his uh first all-star appearance. Uh that was last season finishing eighth in Sai Young voting. So just great stuff from Hunter Green and what he has brought to the table so far and you know it’s just really exciting that the Giants would possibly even be in on a guy like this and you just love to see it. What’s funny is I’m looking here. His erra in 2024 was 275. His ERA in 2025 was 276. He pitched essentially 50 more innings in 2024. He had some injuries. He had groin and things like that, but he’s been fairly steady. And if you look at the different KS and things, obviously that’s going to change based on the amount of innings that he pitched, but he’s still right there. And like I said, at uh 20, let’s see, I said he was 26. Yeah, he is. Yeah, he just turned 26 about 70 days ago. So, he’s a young 26. turned 26 back in in August. So, a lot to be uh excited about. They still rank him really high as far as one of the future aces of the league. That’s the kind of pedigree and projection San Francisco simply doesn’t have outside of Logan Webb. I love Robbie Ray, but I wouldn’t put him in that same ilk right now. So, they could form one of the most dynamic onetwo punches in the National League. Let’s get to what everybody wants to hear about uh a potential trade package. I know that’s what I want to get into. A deal of this magnitude doesn’t happen without giving something up. Green is still young, still cost controlled, and would be one of the biggest arms to change teams this winter if Cincinnati actually makes him available. The Reds are in a bit of a reset phase. They’ve got plenty of young bats, but need outfield stability and a better bullpen. That’s where San Francisco could step in. A realistic offer could center around. You know who I’m going to say? Elliot Ramos, who just had a breakout campaign in 2024 as well. Both of them had a really good 2024. So, there’s that parallel. Still has multiple years of control. Ramos would give Cincinnati an MLB ready bat with Pop. And the Giants could add a a mid-level prospect, someone like a double A guy or, you know, maybe even somebody higher than that to bounce a deal. It’s not cheap, but it’s the kind of calculated move that aligns Posy’s comments about the team being willing to add arms that can both uh help starting and on the bullpen side. I’m going to be honest with you, and some of you might not be uh terribly happy with me when I say this, Elliot Ramos might not be enough, okay? And as much as we talked about all of the different prospects, you’re probably Hunter Green at 26 years old and the it’s the it’s the control, the team control which I think is going to drive up the price tag. I would be willing to do Elliot Ramos and one of the top 30 prospects. I would I would and that is not me um not believing in the prospects. That’s actually me believing in the amount of prospects that the Giants have. You kind of just hope that you don’t give the Reds the wrong one. And when I say the wrong one, the one that is going to end up popping and being something in the league because they’re not all going to be, you know, I’ll give you another name who made his way over to the Reds. Let us not forget, and I know that the Dodgers, the Smurfs just have prospects oozing out of their ears every single day and every single season, but Gavin Lux was supposed to be the second baseman of the future for the Dodgers, and it didn’t end up working out. Now they have four other guys lined up and somehow Kik Hernandez is still on the team. But that’s a guy that it didn’t work out for them. Now he’s in Cincinnati and he’s been fine, right? So when I look at Elliot Ramos, I really like what Elliott Ramos has done for the Giants, but we still don’t really know what Elliott Ramos is going to be in the league. We still don’t really know if Elliott Ramos is going to take that next step. What we do know is that the Giants are willing to spend money and they can open up a spot. I’ve talked about it before. You could pay for a center fielder. You could move Jung Julita to left. You could do a lot of different things. And I like Elliot Ramos, but to get a guy like Hunter Green. I’d be willing to do Elliot Ramos. And like I said, you know, yesterday, what earlier this week, we talked about a Diego Velasquez, somebody like that who Diego Velasquez probably going to be an MLB guy, but ceiling isn’t too high. He is a top 30 guy, a top 30 prospect for the Giants. Would they be willing to do that? They might want more to be honest with you. I think they’re going to be a lot of teams interested. We’re not sure what direction they’re going to go in because they also would like to keep the pitching. It’s just a matter of balance for the Reds and where they want to go. Man, I love trade candidates. I love it. All right. On the other side, and we’ll keep that conversation going. Of course, there’ll be plenty of trade candidates, free agency candidates. On the other side, let’s do another coaching candidate deep dive. This time on a coach who has a lot of experience. We’ve talked about some inexperienced coaches. Now, let’s talk about some coaches with experience. Rocco Ball Delhi. Do not move. More Locked on Giants coming up. There’s nothing like catching a baseball game live. Go download Game Time today. Another candidate deep dive today. It’s going to be Rocco Baldelli for the San Francisco Giants. We have his background and resume highlights. Roco Baldelli was the manager of the Minnesota Twins for seven seasons and he compiled a 527 in 505 record. That’s good for a 51% uh winning percentage. He earned AL manager of the year honors in 2019. His second season in Minnesota after leading the Twins to 101 and 61 record and a division title under Baldelli’s leadership. The Twins made postseason appearances in 2019, 2020, and 2023. In 2025, Minnesota struggled, finishing 70 and 92, which led Baldi to being dismissed after the season. Baldelli has also served in coaching and player development roles, giving him experience beyond just the sideline managing. The SF standard lists him among former MLB managers in the mix for the Giants job. Just baseball ranks him among top candidates for the Giants, noting his track record with Minnesota. So, Baldelli is not really a fringe name. He brings serious managerial experience, some success, and a national profile. Let’s discuss why Baldelli could be a good fit for the Giants. He’s got a proven track record. Baldi has already won a division title, earned manager of the year, and led teams to the postseason. Credentials that carry weight in a high stakes environment like San Francisco. Can I just say real quick for all my I don’t know millennials, older than millennials and maybe even younger than millennials, I had the PSP when I was growing up and MLB the show. Roco Baldelli on MLB the show on the PSP. He was incredible. Okay, so I’ve always just liked Roco Baldelli because I was act absolutely nasty with him on the show playing on my PSP back when I was about 13 14 years old. I just had to throw that out there. So shout out Roco Baldelli in his time. The rains were just crazy during that time. Uh he has experience across varying roster cycles both competing and rebuilding which could help him in transitioning uh the Giants from a middling team to a contender alignment with development and culture. The Giants under Posey are emphasizing a pitch first defense forward identity. Baldelli has shown in Minnesota that he can manage pitching staffs, construct rosters around defense, and emphasize accountability. Uh, let’s also not forget the Carlos Koreah thing, right? He technically coached the best giant that never was. And Carlos Koreah, I will never forget what went down. Also, shout out Arson Judge. Uh his background in development roles and familiarity with coaching systems means he may be more adaptable and collaborative with the front office than a manager used to full autonomy. A fresh voice with MLB experience. Unlike candidates who are a bit unproven, like we’ve talked about before, Baldelli offers a balance. He’s not new to the big leagues. He’s likely hungrier for a new opportunity. His dismissal gives him a chance for renewal and a fresh edge. Because he’s out of work now, he may be motivated to take on a challenging job with risk, but also significant upside. And I would say when it comes to market, I mean, going from Minnesota to San Francisco, that’s a pretty good look right there. You know, I if I do say so myself, the narrative uh and symbolic appeal, hiring someone of Baldelli stature would send a message that the Giants are serious, willing to invest, and willing to pull from proven talent rather than always looking internally. It also widens the search field showing the organization is open-minded, not limited to the catcher coach pipeline. There are some risks, caveats, and concerns. Of course, uh his recent downturn and dismissal after a poor 2025 and obviously losing his job that could raise red flags. Major League Baseball is unforgiving and questions will come up. Was 2025 a blip or a trend? How did he handle roster stress, injuries, and declines? The collapse of Minnesota, especially in the second half, may raise doubts about his ability to lead under pressure. And honestly, the second half of it, I mean, they sold at the deadline just like the Giants did. So, it was kind of already cooked out there in Minnesota. And then they tried to do some things similar to the Giants, but it ultimately uh ended up not working out for them. The Twins and the Giants differ in market size, as I’ve discussed, payroll, latitude, and media scrutiny. Baldelli’s methods must adapt to San Francisco’s expectations. fan patience or dare I say lack thereof and pressure. He’ll be judged harshly uh if performance doesn’t match historic victories fit with Posy’s vision. The Giants want a manager who aligns with a very particular identity. Valdelli must show willingness to seed control, integrate front office strategy, and embrace that identity. How he compares to some of the other candidates compared to uh the the first time guys, the Hunley’s, the Alber’s, the Suzukis. Delhi brings more MLB seasoning which reduces risk. I also would add that it might reduce excitement for some fans. Just the idea of bringing somebody in who’s kind of been on that coach’s carousel. He he is I believe I looked up he’s 44, right? So he’s not um uh it’s not as if he’s been around for a very long time, but he he is somebody that does have coaching spirits which you could look at positively or negatively. Yesterday we talked about having a a bad record or lackluster record. He’s got a good record and he did it in Minnesota. So I think that matters. Compared to bold outsiders like Vitello, he offers a safer, more proven uh leadership direction, even if less dramatic upside. He doesn’t bring internal system knowledge like some of the in-house candidates, but his external experience and track record should compensate. Uh as far as Rockco Baldi is concerned, I think that he should be at the top of the list. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Padres’s are interested in him because the Padres’s just need somebody to kind of write the ship and keep them on the right track. So, I would not be surprised at all if the Padres’s think, hey, this is a guy who had success with a a much lesser roster in Minnesota. It’s a better I would say it’s a better division in the NL West, but we also have more talent on this team. The Padres’s just can’t figure it out, man. But I I would look at a team that is not in the rebuilding phase because he does have he he can do it, don’t get me wrong, but I would look at a team that just needs a bit of stability. So if I’m if I’m the if I’m the camp of Rockco Baldi, I’m taking a really long look at the Giants if they’re interested at the same level. We know they’re somewhat interested. He’s in the mix. The Giants, the Padres’s, I would throw the Braves out there as well. just teams that are ready to go where there’s not a lot of babysitting going on. There’s not a ton of rebuilding. Like we said, he’s done the rebuilding thing. He’s had success. He probably just wants to be at a spot where he can continue to show that he can take a team to that next level. So, I’m I’m big on I I’m not huge on Rockco Baldi, but I am big on He’s got that hybrid, I would say, of experience, but not um not a stale name because he hasn’t been around. Like I said, he did have a good stretch in Minnesota. He was there for a while, but you’re coming to the National League now. You are getting a better a better payroll. You’re getting just a a bigger market. I think Rao Baldelli could work a lot of these guys, right? Right. And I know some people just based on the uh the episode that I did about Nick Hunley and Buster Posey. I don’t have a problem with Nick Hunley. I just wanted the Giants to go through the process. That that is it. I do not have a problem with Nick Hunley. I don’t know. I don’t know anything about Nick Hunley besides what we’ve discussed and what we’ve read and what I’ve heard from people close to the organization. And it sounds like they really like him and other teams like him as well. I’m just not really sure what to do with the Nick Hunley situation because last week they said that they were really interested in him and now we’re not hearing anything else. So I I Allan Styles has has no issue with Nick Hunley. I see that comment from time to time. I just wanted the Giants to go through the process because there are a lot of good names out here. Now with the Padres’s available, you’re going to have to act on someone and we’ll see what updates come up. It’s been really quiet on the Giants front today or this week. So maybe we’ll hear something. But yeah, Roco Baldelli, I’ I’d be I’d be fine with the Roco Baldelli move for sure. One last segment with you. Let’s talk about improving the backup catcher situation. Now, there might be a time where we discuss moving on for Patrick Bailey, but the guy’s a gold glover, and the the point is he’s probably not going anywhere. But what the Giants can do, they can’t continue to just run out 4A backup catchers that give you absolutely nothing when Patrick Bailey isn’t in the game. you can actually improve offensively on those days where Patrick Bailey isn’t playing and when Patrick Bailey is not redot as we saw him get a couple times this season. Don’t move. One more for you. Locked on Giants coming up. The NFL season is here and FanDuel has an offer you don’t want to miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win. That’s right. Visit fanduel.com to download the FanDuel app today and get started. So, I’m not going to say that we will never have a conversation about trading Patrick Bailey, but today the segment is about making sure the backup behind Patrick Bailey is good enough. And I don’t think the backup behind Patrick Bailey was good enough or whoever it was, they weren’t good enough this past season. And there are some numbers to back that up as well. Before we go any further, I know Jesus Rodriguez might be that guy. Jesus Rodriguez, they might just need to find him a spot in the lineup somewhere and with Patrick Bailey what being 26 27 the Giants going to have a conversation with themselves if if Jesus Rodriguez keeps balling out. We will handle that when we get to it, but he could be the backup going into 2026. Let’s just discuss if it isn’t him. So Patrick Bailey for a large part of the narrative is not really the problem when it comes to the Giants offensive struggles. he can be part of it, but there’s more to it as well. Of course, he’s one of the few Giants players who has clearly defined a role and skill. A top tier defensive catcher, a strong game caller, and someone Buster Posie clearly believes in as part of the team’s long-term core. We’ll hear more as the offseason goes by, but that’s the last that we heard. But as the Giants think about how to reshape their roster this off seasonason, they need to confront a real issue. They’re catching depth behind Bailey has been a liability. And if they’re serious about competing in 2026, they can’t go into another year with the same setup. Defensively, Bailey’s value is undeniable. He ranked near the top of MLB catchers again in 2025. Catcher framing runs, defensive runs saved, and pop time. That’s per stat cast. And of course, we’ll discuss ABS and all that coming in. Today is a separate conversation. Just trust me on that. He’s essentially the backbone of the Giants pitching and defense identity that they want to lean into. exactly what Posie has been preaching since taking over as head of baseball operations. But the problem is that Bailey plays such a heavy defensive load that when he sits, there’s a massive drop off both in performance and game management. The backup catcher position occupied this year by Andrew Kizner and the band, a couple other guys, no disrespect to them, it just wasn’t good enough. Offensively, the backup catchers ranked bottom five in the league in OPS. And defensively, they were below average in both framing and throwing metrics. That’s a glaring weakness on a team built around again pitching and precision. You can’t emphasize pitcher confidence and game planning all week, then hand the keys to a defensive liability once or twice a series. So, no, you don’t need to trade Patrick Bailey to shake things up. Again, we’ll have that conversation a different day. It’s going to be a long offseason, but a fun one with all of you. But what you do need is someone behind him who can either hit at a league average level or provide similar defensive reliability. That doesn’t mean a big agent free splash, no JT Realm Muto or Adley Rushman in a trade, anything like that for this specific segment, but it should mean targeting a veteran with defensive stability and experience handling pitching staffs. Alternatively, if the Giants want a little more offensive upside, there are younger options like Nick Forez uh and Reese Maguire who could be available via trade. Either way, they can’t go into another season relying on makeshift catching depth. A dependable number two catcher is one of the most simplest cost effective ways to improve your pitching outcomes without touching the rotation. And I know ABS is going to change that a little bit, but that is a huge huge thing to think about. This also matters because Bailey’s offensive production remains inconsistent. He’s shown flashes. He had that 280 stretch in May, clutch hits against lefties, but he still slumps for long stretches, especially against right-handed pitching. Having a backup who can start selectively against certain matchups without losing a defensive integrity gives the Giants lineup more flexibility. The bottom line, if the Giants are serious about building around that pitching and defense, backup catcher can’t be an afterthought. Bailey is the guy as of right now. We don’t need to argue that as of right now, but this team has been far too thin behind him and has put a strain on both the staff and Bailey himself. This offseason, Posey and the crew need to find a veteran or trade target who gives the Giants one less thing to worry about because in 2026, small things like catching depth will make the difference between another 500 series and a legitimate playoff run. That is where it all kind of uh comes around here for the San Francisco Giants. Now, there is a priority list, don’t get me wrong. And I’m not saying that the Giants are uh looking at the backup catcher as the number one thing on that priority list, but it is something that they need to pay attention to because it’s bad, man. It’s bad. There there there are days where you’re just getting absolutely nothing from the backup position. Now, there are days where you’re also getting nothing from the uh from the starting position as far as the catcher is concerned, but we know what Bailey does defensively. And I and we talked about this when the ABS story came out. Even with ABS and its arrival, he’s still going to save the Giants a good amount of outs per game. We’ll talk more about that as we get closer to the season and we hear more from Buster Posie about what he thinks specifically because he was a catcher in the league. But you just you cannot just sell a day when Patrick Bailey doesn’t play. Not just offensively, but defensively as well. You cannot sell that. You say, “Oh, we’re all good.” And you know, we like I said, we’ll have Patrick Bailey conversations. Does he need to stop at the switch inning? Only go lefty, only go righty, whatever that case is. But from the backup catcher spot, I think it’s a great note that other teams that we’ve seen, the the Cubs for example, as soon as I start looking up highlights of some of the guys that we mentioned, like Reese Magcguire, the first thing that comes up for the Chicago Cubs is a grand slam. When in the world did the Giants backup situation, backup catcher do anything like that? I mean, like I said, and and that’s why I mentioned the offensive upside. You have to have something. Every game is too important in the NL West. Every game is too important in the NLS to take a day and just say we’re good here. We’re gonna be a net negative, not just offensively, but defensively as well. You don’t have to do that. So maybe it is Jesus Rodriguez. You know, I don’t know if this could turn into, funny enough, uh an Orio situation where the Orioles bring up their young catcher and obviously you have Adley Rushman and he struggled with injury. Next thing you know, the young catcher starting. They end up paying the young catcher. And now there’s a conversation as to where the Orioles are going to do next. If they bring in Jesus Rodriguez, that that could be the case. We’ll see. I I’m not in any way, shape, or form uh against just making Jesus Rodriguez the back the backup. As a young player, though, do you want him backing up and getting uh and getting abs once a series or would you rather keep him in AAA? Again, definitely see what you have in Patrick Bailey. Let’s see what he does offensively and defensively with the ABS. How does his value look there? And then going into 2027, make a decision for the the catching position. That’s all I have for you today. Thank you for listening to Locked On Giants. Be sure to follow me on social media, the_Siles with an I. Also, be sure to follow our official Locked On Giants account. In today’s episode, we’re talking big moves and big decisions for the San Francisco Giants. First, could a blockbuster trade for Hunter Greene be the move that finally reshapes this pitching staff? The Reds’ flamethrower is under control through 2028 — and if the Giants really want to build around pitching and defense like Buster Posey keeps saying, Greene might be the perfect fit. Then we dive into the latest managerial buzz, breaking down why Rocco Baldelli could make sense as the next Giants manager — proven, experienced, and aligned with Posey’s vision. And finally, we settle one of the offseason’s quietest but most important debates: No, you don’t have to trade Patrick Bailey… but the Giants absolutely need a better backup catcher. From roster upgrades to clubhouse leadership, this episode covers what the front office needs to do to get the Giants back in contention in 2026.

Baldelli won’t be any better than Melvin just watch
It would take a hell of a lot more than Heliot Ramos and any prospect to get a Hunter Greene. Reds aren’t stupid
I'm sure glad youre not the gm
Rocco does have mitochondrial channelopathy.
I’m ok with the Giants dealing Ramos, he needs a change of scenery we need pitching
I would give up Ramos/Top 30/ and a sweetener for Greene. I think he would be a great add plus you’re gonna lose Ray after next year.
Greene would take much more than Ramos and 1 top 30 prospect to acquire.
Would love to have Greene, but it would cost a lot more than Ramos and a top-10 Giants prospect
I am totally for the Giants going out and getting Hunter Greene!!
You always do an excellent job Allen!!! What about Hunter Green for Ramos, Birdsong plus one other top 30 prospect not named Eldridge or Whisenhunt?
Heliot Ramos will not be enough. It's gonna have be Eldridge and a lot more.
You said a manager that aligns with the Giants identity. We have a lot of Latin players here how about Benji Gil who is bilingual and a winner!!
Shoot I’d trade anybody not named Eldridge!
I would love that trade for hunter Green, than we trade for Kwan, and sign bo bichette and Kyle tucker!
You know who Posey should hire for manager? Buster freaking Posey, that's who.
Send them anything not named Webb, Rodrigues, Adames, Chapman, Devers.
What about Ramos and Fitzgerald for Greene? Then Matos/Gilbert can have LF, and sign Tucker/Bellinger?
I think you need to give up Heliot and 2-3 of the top 30 prospects, atleast one top ten
I really like Ramos, but him plus Whisenhunt & Meckler (if they’d take Meckler) for Hunter Greene would be an easy trade. I wouldn’t miss Mason Black either. That would be Ramos plus 3 of the Giants top 30 prospects. The real question is what are the Reds really looking for? If they’re not willing to take top pitching prospects, then they may be too stupid to do a trade with.
I would include Robbie Ray in a trade package with a good MLB ready bat, and a young prospect.
What's wrong with Knizner as a back up catcher? Admittedly very small sample but he batted .306 after the All-Star break and .280 against LHP's. Per Fangraphs he was just above MLB average defensively.
This is the guy for manager Rocco let’s do it!
