Did Tennessee Titans fire head coach Brian Callahan too soon? | FNIA | NFL on NBC

All right, let’s move it on down because we do have our first coaching change. And you know, interesting. Shfter was saying that Adam Sheper that he didn’t think there would be a change. About an hour later, there is a change. And it’s the Titans who let go Brian Callahan. Uh coach, your reaction to this? Well, I’m never a fan of changes during the season unless uh there’s a big problem, unless the team is quit. Now, if you see a team that’s going out there and they’re not giving effort and uh there’s a lot of grumbling inside, then maybe you have to do it. I don’t know what these mid-season changes do to help you in the long run. So, we’ll see what happens. I don’t know all the details uh in Tennessee, but I think it’s probably a little too soon for my liking. For me, coach, I think that when you know, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. And the biggest challenge for me is coming into work for a guy that I don’t trust, I don’t believe in, hearing his message. And I got to listen to that message every single day. And I’m sitting in my seat and I’m looking at this coach and saying, “I don’t believe in this guy. I don’t trust this guy. I’m not coming in early for this guy. I’m not doing it.” And that’s what I think happened. You know, you you get a lot of those guys, they don’t believe in him. And I thought this was the right smart move. And now you get a new guy that comes in. You have a different voice, a different perspective. The coach is telling you, “Hey guys, we’re starting over. It’s a new slate. I’m going to judge you based off of what you do right now.” So that makes guys feel good. It gives you a chance to be excited. It gives you a different perspective. So to me, I think in this situation, when your when your young number one pick quarterback comes and say that we’re we are the worst team in the league, that’s not a good thing. that means that that head coach has not been really in contact with that young man. And I thought it was the right move to make. And I I think you’re absolutely right. And Jack, I think that’s what ownership and good general managers do when they have a situation like this. They look at the players. They watch the players. They get the vibe. And does Rodney Harrison still believe in our guy? Or is he saying, “No, I don’t.” I can remember Dan Rooney, former owner who passed away the Steelers, telling me uh about his first year with Chuck Null. Steelers won their first game, lost 13 straight after that. And Dan said, I could tell by the players and the way they were practicing, the way they responded. I knew we had the right guy even though we were one and 13 because they were still working. They still believed and it wasn’t an issue. Uh and by the same token, you can see it the other way. If the players have given up, if they don’t believe, if they don’t want to hear that message anymore, then you can tell. Hey, and one thing, guys, one thing that I was thinking about too, guys, is I I feel bad for one of their players who I think has been an outstanding player for a long time, coach, and that’s been Jeffrey Simmons. And I hate the fact that he has to go through this. And I think they should trade him just based off of just showing him some love. I mean, because he could be a difference maker. You think about Jeffrey Simmons and if he goes to, you know, whether it’s the Cowboys or somewhere else, somebody that needs a a a really a playmaking defensive tackle, he could be a difference maker for somebody. No, he could, but you have to put yourself in the position of ownership. They’re saying, “We’re going to get the right guy in here, and when we get him, we need some leaders. We need some guys who are going to be the the beacons, and I want to keep him here so he can establish that.” It’s a tough call and I know Tampa went through that before I got there. They’d had 13 straight losing seasons, gone through several different coaches, traded a lot of good players away, and it just didn’t seem like it. But I was glad when I got there that we had Tony Mayberry, Derek Brooks, and some guys who we could build on that they didn’t just say, “Oh, well, these guys are really good guys and good players. Let them go someplace else.” Yeah, it’s true. And I think what makes this even tougher too is the realization and maybe verification that you had the right guy and Mike Vrabel and they had to be sick about that. They have to be sick about that. And he was the right kind of coach for them. He was the right guy in the community that Nashville community really loved Rabbel. And so when you let him go and then you get somebody who’s worse and then he goes somewhere else like New England and has success and now all of a sudden in week seven the Patriots coached by Mike Vrabel are coming back into Tennessee when you’re one and five and you just fired your coach. I mean that makes it even worse, doesn’t it, coach? It does. And Mike will have no He won’t want to pour it on will he rod. Yes, he will. If it was me, I’d say, “Let’s if we can win this 100 to nothing, let’s go do it.” Absolutely. He’s He’ll be ready. You better believe that. That’ll be his most focus week. 1. He should’ve been fired at the end of last season. When you fire the GM, the coach needs to go with him. Especially if you were drafting a quarterback number one overall in the next draft.

  2. Even if Hall of Fame coaches coached the Titans, they would still be losers. The team construction has been garbage ever since they let Jonnu Smith and AJ Brown go.

They were delusional enough to think that guys like those two could be easily replaceable. Now, they have had three general managers since trading away AJ Brown, and three head coaches— full-time and interim — at the same time.

  3. I understand that these media people can’t know everything about everything Team. With that being said, I am a Tennessee Titans fan for almost 35 years! It just to let y’all know we do not miss Mike Vrabel! Y’all need to look at his record over the last three seasons he was with Tennessee!

  4. Vrabel has 2 losing seasons when he was fired and wouldn't evolve plus also lost the afc championship by running Henry when he wasn't ready and bad game planning. Vrabel sucked and was time to move on that's fact that it didn't work out with Callahan doesn't change that.

  5. No man I love Jeffrey Simmons and we aren’t letting him go anywhere! I’ve been a season ticket holder for a long time! If Jeff leaves so will I! As far as Vrabel goes his success depends on his offensive coordinator doing a good job. He never got it right in Tennessee and the team got worse every year under him! Let’s give him a few years at New England and see how it goes! I’m glad he’s gone we could not score 20 points a game with Vrabel!!!
