Wentz, McCarthy loom large ahead of Eagles-Vikings Week 7 matchup | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
On Sunday at 1:00 Eastern, one of the various games to be played will be the Eagles off their miniby. Following two straight losses, two losses between a Sunday and a Thursday, most recently to the Giants. They go to Minnesota to take on the Vikings who last played Miles Browns in London. Vikings 3-2, Eagles 4-2. And the question in Minnesota, who will the quarterback be? And for the first time ever, Kevin Oonnell seemed a little pissy yesterday when he was asked the question of who the starting quarterback. Any any news, any update on who the starter will be? No, it hasn’t changed since Monday and there was just a little edge to his voice and because there’s usually nothing. So just to see anything was noteworthy. But look, I think it’s going to be Carson Wentz. You read between the lines. You look at the injury report. Carson Wentz fully participates in practice. JJ McCarthy limited as he’s coming back from the ankle. Okonnell’s already told us the answers to the questions for the test. McCarthy’s got to practice the whole week. He’s got to be ready to go. He can’t just be, hey, I’m 100% Saturday night. You got to be ready. And if you’re getting Wentz ready, you’re not going to have the reps to get McCarthy ready. I think they’re working McCarthy back toward it. I think next week is more realistic. It was a four to six week injury. This is week five. Wentz has played well enough. They’ve gone two and one. And Justin Jefferson’s getting the ball a lot, which I’m sure is a factor in all of this. I think it’s going to be Wentz going against the team that drafted him nine years ago. Yeah, I I think you’re right about that, Mike. And I I think about Kevin Oonnell’s approach to young quarterbacks and the things that he’s talked about, you know, how teams fail young quarterbacks before the young quarterback fails the team. And I think all of that kind of goes into what he wants to do with JJ McCarthy right now, which is, you know, you want to make sure that he’s set up for success in the best way possible. And part of that goes into how much is he practicing, right? And this is something that Kevin Oonnell has brought up too. You know, there was the birth of JJ McCarthy’s child and he wasn’t a available to practice because obviously it’s something else that was a little bit more important going on and then he gets out on the field and things don’t quite look quite right. And I think the importance of practice for a young quarterback and getting every single rep that you need is something that Okonnell is really going to try to stress so that he sets up JJ McCarthy for more success um than he would otherwise. I think it would be different if McCarthy were a more established starter, but we’re still talking about somebody that would only be going into what his third start, you know, and somebody who just has not had those builtin practice reps, right? So because of that, I think McCarthy, excuse me, I think Okonnell is going to be a little bit more cautious than he would otherwise be with um JJ McCarthy in part because Carson Wentz hasn’t, you know, peed down his leg too much, you know, throughout the course of his his starts. And if they don’t come back and beat the Browns in that game in London, maybe it’s a little bit different. But I think Carson Wentz’s play, especially that last drive, has maybe allowed Okonnell to think, “All right, let’s let’s we can continue to be cautious here, especially because we don’t want to set up our young quarterback to not have the success we know he needs.” Yeah. The biggest challenge is to get him on board with it, to get him to understand he wants to play obviously, but it’s about winning. And Carson Wentz impressive after he had the shoulder injury. When that game went to the half, I thought we were going to see undrafted rookie M Max Max Bromer the rest of the way. If only back came Wentz. The Vikings pulled it off. So, I think we’re going to see Wentz in his 98th career start. 98th and second against the Eagles. He started for the Commanders against the Eagles in 2022. Washington lost that game 24-8. So, he’s never beaten the Eagles. This will be his latest chance to do it if that’s what happens. Hi, it’s Mike Florio. Thanks for watching PFT on YouTube. Wentz revenge game?
Should have kept sam darnold
Remember, after Sunday's game the Vikes have a short week on the road, a Thurs game in LA. So if Wentz starts Sunday he's probably gonna start Thursday's game as well.
my fear is mccarthy being injured prone
I’m beginning to think Brosmer is going to show himself better than JJ MCarthy… and those who drafted JJ don’t want to be embarrassed
JJ is horrendous. He’ll be lucky to be a backup in this league.
Wentz is solid
We still never seen JJ with a full offensive line
What McCarthy needs to succeed is a good, non-injured, offensive line. And he needs more practice reps before he returns.
Why didn't they resign Darnold?
KO said a couple of weeks ago JJ would not start until he had a full week of healthy practice.
KOC pissy because JJ hasn’t really been available for continued regular practice his entire time as a Viking. Injury history is already a concern
O'Connell is upset because he knows McCarthy is NOT ready to be a starting QB in the NFL and the Vikings banked the whole season on McCarthy being the starter!
