Welcome to Denver Sports Tonight, taking a look at the biggest stories in Denver Sports from your online home for the best opinions and information on the Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche, Rockies, and more. denverports.com. It is Denver Sports Tonight on this Wednesday night in the Mile High City. He’s Dante Gomez. I’m Will Peterson. We will roll with you for the next hour on a busy day at Broncos Park powered by Common Spirit. Man, it feels like it’s been forever since the Broncos have practiced here in the Mile High City and it kind of has been. Uh weird schedule coming off Monday Night Football. They go to Philly, they go to London, they finally get back home. I certainly understand given them Monday and Tuesday to rest and recover and then back at it today as the New York Giants will be here on Sunday afternoon. We heard from Shawn Payeyton. We heard from Bo Nicks. We heard from Courtland Sutton, Patan II, Jonathan Cooper, a lot more guys in the locker room as well. Everyone in a good mood. And I will start with Cooper because he made a little bit of Broncos history today. Dante um wins AFC defensive player of the week. first time in his career, but even more so in a franchise that has won that award 42 times since it was instituted in 1984. First time ever Broncos go back-to-back defensive player of the week in the conference. Pretty darn cool. And uh also, I’m not going to lie, bit surprising given some of the great defenses they’ve had over the years. But when Nick Bonito does what he does against the Eagles and then Cooper follows that up against the Jets, you get a little bit of history. the dynamic duo. Each of them snagging the award one time. Uh you’re going against 15 16 other teams every week for this award. Happy for Coupe. He was excellent sacking Justin Fields a couple times and then filling up the stat sheet elsewhere. Yeah, super deserving of the award. I thought he looked really good out in that game and um you know helped the Broncos defense look as dominant as they were and um honestly I was surprised it hasn’t happened in the Broncos history and just knowing the defensive history in this city. Um, you know, going back to the Orange Crush days, the no-fly zone. Um, there’s just so many iterations of Broncos great defenses. So, surprised it hasn’t happened before, but good for these guys getting it done and making history. Well, and guess where my mind immediately went. Well, they’ve never gone backto back and you’ve got pretty mediocre to bad football team coming here this weekend with a couple of rookies. Could they repeat with the award? I mean, if you hold the New York Giants to seven or 10 points and Patan has a pick or two or a pick six, Zack Allen shows up to the sack party with two two and a half sacks. Heck, Bonito could do it again, Cooper could do it again, Huanga could do it, Dre Greenlaw may or may not play. We’ll get to that in a little bit. Um, I know that’s uh that’s greedy, don’t get me wrong, but I thought, well, if you’re going to go two in a row, maybe the uh three repeat is in store for backto backto back AFC defensive players of the week. I like the way your brain’s thinking, but I’m going to correct you. I don’t think the Giants are bad slash mediocre. Two in one with Jackson Dart. It’s a It’s a winning football organization. I made the argument they probably have the best two wins in the NFL. Like, if you’re going like, you know, college football style resume, I think the Giants have been really good since Dark got put in there. So, um I I don’t think that they’re going to be they’re going to do their end to be okay. But yeah, there’s no denying it. If Patane goes out and gets a pick six or something like that, he would be worthy of the award as well. All right. Well, we got to, you know, hold that brakes a little there. They’re they’re two and four. And I get Russell Wilson was a big part of the two and four, but in between the the two best wins of the year, the Chargers and the Eagles. Put it in quotes as if that was fake for for the listeners out there. Well, the the YouTube viewers will know I put it in quotes because the Broncos also beat the Eagles. So, style points. What’s that? I’m talking two wins deep. Like what’s the Broncos second best win this year? Um yeah, they don’t have one. Exactly. Okay. They’ve beaten the Chargers. They’ve beaten the Eagles. That’s fair. You you you’re glossing over what happened in between. They lost to a craptastic Saints team down in New Orleans. And I think that’s what happens with rookies, right? You can you can hit your ceiling and have really nice wins and you can lay eggs and have really bad losses. Saints may win what, three, four games this year. And one of those is going to be over Jackson Dart and the Giants. Yeah. No, the the Saints are probably going to have the number one overall pick um come, you know, March or whenever the Jets draft or the Jets. I think the Saints are worse, but you know, we’ll we’ll see how that plays out. Also, what happened last time you underestimated a Broncos opponent? I’m not going to underestimate anyone, but I just I you know, the Giants are two and four. They’re But they’re two and one really. I I think it’s unfair to have the first three games count. Not in terms of the other 52. Like last time I checked, the quarterback doesn’t win or lose every single game. They they did start 0 and3 to begin this year. I get it. They’ve made a QB change and no one in this town’s going to say, “Well, Russell Wilson didn’t get a fair shake.” We’re we’re all over, right? Are you sure not one person is? Maybe one. Maybe one. Um but yeah, they they I I don’t think top to bottom the Giants are a a super duper talented football team. I think they have some intriguing pieces. I’m intrigued by Jackson Dart. I think Cam Scataboo runs with his hair on fire. Malik Neighbors has also torn his ACL. He’s done for the year. They have some nice guys on defense. There’s no doubt about it. But I think when it’s all said and done, Dante, the Giants are going to be six and 11, seven and 10, somewhere in that ballpark. I think that’s fair. But I think that’s better than what most people had them at, especially after you start 0 and3. But even going into the year, the expectations were very low. So I think they’re going to overachieve on the season, but I don’t know if that means they’re going to be a playoff team or anything like that. Well, it looks like they’ve got a guy in dart. I’ll agree with you there that he certainly, you know, I know a lot of people were mad he was drafted over Shadore Sanders. And we’re waiting for Shador to get his fair shake at at one point or another. He didn’t do himself a ton of favors. Still isn’t doing himself a ton of favors, but uh I don’t think with hindsight being 2020 that dart over Shidor was some uh ridiculous reach by the Giants. They they got a dude. He can play QB for sure. But that said, based on what they did in New Orleans, those two wins you cited were both in Metife East Rutherford. We’ll see how they travel out here to Empower Field at Mile High. And if the Broncos treat them like they treat the Bengals and walk away with uh, you know, a big-time win where the the New York Giants score in single digits, I think backto backtoback AFC defensive players of the week is is in play. Let’s just put it that way. Let’s just It wouldn’t stun you if come one week from today, you’re talking about backto backtoback defensive players of the week. No, absolutely not. They’re going to have to go out and do something in terms of, you know, someone getting two sacks or like I said or like you said a Patert Tan pick six some or maybe just two interceptions in general. Um I think they’re going to have to go out and earn it and I don’t think the Giants are just going to hand them this kind of award. All right, we’ll see about it. We get into that as the uh program goes on and certainly in the next couple of days as Broncos and Giants begins to creep up on us. Some other news from today though and I think uh even though I began with Cooper, this is the biggest headline. And Dre Greenlaw returns to practice for the Broncos. It’s certainly a big boost. There’s no doubt about it. They have opened his 21-day window to be activated from IR. Remember, they didn’t put him on IR to begin the year. We all sort of questioned that. Then a couple weeks in, they changed their mind and said, “Yep, we’re going to sit him for four.” Well, the good news is today was the first day he was eligible. He was out there. Uh Shawn Payeyton was super grumpy. Did not want to talk about Dre Green Law at all today. Here’s a little bit of that. These are the hypotheticals, right? I love him. You know, no, I can’t say anything about injury. He practiced today. He practiced today. He’s been working out like he’s been rehabbing and uh today was a good day. He practiced today. Reminded me of the infamous Miami. What’s the question? What’s the question from Sean? Same reporter, our guy Chris Thomasson from the Denver Gazette. But uh yeah, can’t say anything about injuries. Well, the good news is PS2 did say something about the injury and said that Dre looked really good out there today. Um, Malcolm Roach came eligible last week, played last weekend against the Jets. I’m pinning you down a little bit here, but just a gut reaction, gut feeling based on some of the reports coming out of Broncos Park powered by Common Spirit. Do you think Drelaw can get out there on Sunday against the Giants? I do. I I almost expected at this point um full participant in practice and he’s just sat out for so long that it feels like they were building up for something and I don’t think they would have him out at practice if he wasn’t 100% or dang near 100%. So I think that’s the kind of version we’re getting of him. How long that lasts I think you know TBD we’ll see on that. Optimistically, I hope he just, you know, plays every game from here on out, but given his history, I don’t know how realistic that is, but I expect him to see him out there on Sunday. Maybe a bit of a a pitch count or snap count for him, but I expect him to go out there and be be the version of him that we expected. The loud Dre Green law where he’s hitting guys where it’s like, o, that was like Dre Green Law and Cam Scataboo, you know, in a tunnel going one-on-one like that. That is that that’s some that’s some good football we should be seeing. You’re right. That would be fun. That’s the old uh gosh, and I’m going to butcher it, but isn’t there like a Newton law? Something about a immovable object and a force or something or another. I think it’s like uh an object at rest will stay at rest or and an object in motion will stay in motion. Something like that. There’s something about immovable. I’ll Google it. Maybe the text line. Well, there’s the the famous thing of like the uh the immovable object versus the unstoppable force. There you go. That’s straight green law versus Cam. I don’t think that was Newton, but that’s something. I think that was Newton. as a proud graduate of Isaac Newton Middle School. Um, I should know my Newton’s laws. Uh, real quick, just minor minor thing. The Broncos did listed him as limited, Dante, not as full today. So, the official injury report has him as limited, but I’m with you. Roach was listed as limited early on last week and then he got to full and then he played. I think Green Law is going to play on Sunday. I think they’re ready to see him, ready to start to get some ROI. Gave him a big contract and they took a chance on him. I mean, we’ve we’ve outlined it plenty. They took a chance on Huonga. He has certainly lived up to every penny thus far. They took a chance on Ingram. Well, fourth quarter on in Philly. He’s starting to live up to it. And they took a chance on Green Law. Hopefully, he’s good as well. A couple other notes from the injury report. Jonah Ellis gets another DNP today. Okay, that’s going to officially be on my radar. Didn’t practice at all for uh the Jets game in London and doesn’t practice today. And then Jonathan Cooper also limited with a quad as well. Not worried about that. Uh he was getting a ton of praise. They put him at the podium today, rightfully so for his award. I think Coupe should be okay. Everyone else full. Nick Bonito, Alex Singleton, the only other guys listed. But the thing about this Broncos team right now isn’t the defense because we could sit here and he praise on the defense all night long. It’s the offense. And I wanted to hear from Shawn Payeyton today about the offense. And he got asked, I thought, a very fair question. The slogs that the offense is having, right? Three horrible quarters against Philly. Very good fourth quarter. Pretty nice first quarter against the Jets outside of the Troy Franklin fumble. Terrible final three quarters on offense. Sean got asked about how do you sort of stop these periods of time where you just can’t move the football at all. Listen, I think it’s something that we we’ve got to have a heightened awareness to and attention to detail and it’s it’s the little things it’s reducing in the plan. You know, that has to happen fast. I thought the key to that answer and I wrote about that this afternoon at denverports.com was it has to happen fast. Sean himself is starting to get the urgency here. I mean, and he he chatted about it today, but they they had a sequence against the Jets, Dante, where they they handed the ball to a fullback on third and 10. It’s like, if that’s not waving the white flag on a possession, I don’t know what is. And he explained it, well, they checked into a pressure look, whatever, yada yada yada. But the the offense has got to get going. Like, it’s it’s October 15th. The next time you play will be, let’s call it late October, at the very least, mid to late October. It’s time, man. We’ve been talking about this since the middle of July. The offense has got to start going. Yeah, absolutely. And I I think that was a very important part of it. To me, it was almost like assumed that it’s time and we got to get it going quickly. Uh I took more away from him saying I think he said something about getting reduced in there. And to me that means, hey, maybe we’re not going to see as many personnel changes. Maybe we’re not going to see him get, you know, as cute on some of the play calls with a Marvin Mims run or a uh a Jaloo Mlofflin screen in a big moment. So, I think maybe it’s more of, you know, getting to your bread and butter and doing that more often than trying to do all these exotic things that Sean’s tried to do so far this season. Yeah, good uh ears by you. He said, quote, “It’s reducing in the plan.” So, read into that what you will, but I actually uh heard it the same way you did when I was watching live earlier today that it’s maybe we’re throwing too much at these guys. And sometimes in life and in football, simpler is frankly better. Exactly. Yeah, that’s exactly, you know, took the words out of my mouth that get make it more simple the way that we’ve seen it when they do go tempo. And because when you go tempo, that really simplifies the offense and simplifies the defense on the other side um for the Broncos and Bo Knicks. So, I think I think we’re going to, you know, knock on wood see a simplified version of this offense and like I said, not as many personnel changes, maybe not any designed plays for Jal Mclofflin or a uh a designed run for Mims unless and Ingram had a designed run, too. And I I think he actually got like six or seven yards, but you don’t really think of Evan Ingram as a burner on jet sweeps, right? Exactly. Yes. Yeah. Exactly what I’m talking about where it’s just like, hey, you don’t really need to do that. Like Ingram was a great target in the first half of that football game. Um picking up key yards in key situations and it just felt unnecessary, I think, is a good way of putting it. Yeah. On the ramlot.com text line 3037131043. The 9935 says, “Will, please don’t overlook them like you did the Colts.” Yeah, I’m done. I’m done with the overlooking thing. Uh, overlook the Colts. That burned me. Overlook the Jets. That nearly burned me. So, I have uh heeded your advice. Texture, you’re not the only one saying that. Not going to overlook anyone. 7722 says, “Did you really just say that the Denver Broncos beating the Cincinnati Bengals was a big time win?” No, neither of us said that. I said their only big-time win this year was beating the Eagles. Maybe if you heard me wrong, I said they won big over the Bengals cuz they won by 25 points. But I was talking about the margin of victory, not the opponent. Certainly if that had been Joe Burrow, it would have been notable. But we all know the Bengals are a lot different team without one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The 8224 says it is the second of Newton’s laws of physics where both of those things cannot exist and unstoppable force can exist if there’s an immovable object and vice versa. All right, appreciate the uh physics lesson. That’s actually what I was looking for and yes, straight green law and Cam Scataboo could be that this weekend. The other thing for the Broncos, and I know the drive has done a great job outlining this, but it’s the penalties and and they’re just driving us nuts uh as a fan base. And quite frankly, I think they’re driving the head coach a little bit nuts, too. Here was Shawn Peyton today uh about all the penalties the Broncos take. And I thought he took a lot of accountability. You you have to look internally first. All right, are we doing too much? How do we reduce the variables? And then are there repeat offenders? You know, and so obviously we’ve got to address it during practice if we see it. And in other words, if it continues to happen, then, you know, as a coach or a teacher, we we’ve not done a good enough job addressing it. And so, you know, we understand its significance. So, I was doing some homework on this today. The Broncos have 49 penalties that have counted against them this year. So, been accepted by the other team. 49. You want to take a wild guess where that ranks in the NFL? 49 penalties through six games. Quick math on that. What? 8 n 88 penalties a a game accepted against the Broncos. I mean, it’s got to be top three. I I’m going to go second. Yeah, it’s very close. It’s It’s tied fourth. New England’s got 54. Jacksonville’s got 52. New Orleans has 50. And the Broncos. And ironically, the Giants both have 49. So, it’s just not good at all. And then those yards against Denver is at 448, which your guess would be spot on, is second in the league. Only New England more or excuse me, only the Giants more with 470. So, uh, if you don’t like flags, which most of us don’t, buckle up. Sunday could be a flag fest between the two teams in this league that have the most yards against them. What did you think of Sean’s answer there? Sort of talking about, hey, maybe we’re not teaching it well enough. Maybe we’re not coaching it well enough. We got to stop it and practice more. The penalty thing, if it happens the first week, two weeks, I think some of it can be forgiven, but they’re still just getting flagged far too many times for this point in the season. Yeah, absolutely. I like that he took ownership over it. You know, the famous quote is either you’re coaching it or you’re allowing it to happen, and he’s taking ownership over that. He’s allowing it to happen. And I I’ve seen Shawn, you know, through training camp and whatnot, he can be a very hands-on coach with some of this stuff. And I expect that he was very hands-on uh when it comes to penalties this week in in Broncos practice. Yeah. And even like the sequence last week with the the Pat Bryant lining up off sides and then Matt Per uh gets the penalty and all of a sudden you’re just moving backwards. You just can’t have those things. Like you just got to be cleaner, more attention to detail. I know Luke Watenber’s had some tough flags against him and I think Shawn sort of defended Luke Watenberg is like well we’ve worked on that. We’ve talked to the league about it. You you can’t defend Pat Bryant just lining up in the neutral zone. I mean, that’s just basic. Check your feet. Check where the ref is. Don’t line up in the neutral zone. They teach that to middle school football players. I don’t know what it is about this team because they’re a good football team. They have a lot of good players. I think they have leaders in the room, but that to me penalties equals lack of mental sharpness, if that makes sense. Lack of focus almost. And I don’t have a good answer for it. And I’m sure it’s making Shawn pull his hair out when he’s watching some of this tape. Yeah, absolutely. I think it’s just, you know, some of the small details like you said, you know, Pat Bryant lining up in the neutral zone. You just can’t have that. And I get it. He’s a rookie, but if you’re going to have him out there on Sundays for an NFL game, he’s got to be prepared for those kinds of things. He’s got to know to check those um you know, there just such very avoidable mistakes. I think that’s the best way of put it. If you’re holding, I get it. Like holding’s not great, but it happens. It probably happens all the time. You know, people say it happens on every single play. So, that one to me is a little more excusable. There’s there’s some penalties that are more excusable, but the Broncos are doing the easy ones, the very one the the very avoidable versions of them where it’s like, “Hey, we can’t be doing this.” Plus, having the regular holding calls and the DPIs and that kind of stuff. That stuff’s a little more, you know, in-game flow happens. Sometimes refs call, sometimes refs don’t. I’m a little more relaxed on those kinds of penalties. Well, and I love your word avoidable. I think that’s just the perfect word to describe I don’t know 70% of these Broncos penalties. If guys are getting flagged for playing overly aggressive, listen, I don’t want it to be like Kareem Jackson was a couple years ago where it was headunting and he’s getting ejected and he’s getting suspended, but you know, if you’re getting flagged here and there for just making a a tough-nose football play, I can live with it. I can’t live with the the mental lapses. The last thing I want to hit on in this segment was the tempo. And Anilo and I talked about that last night, how it felt like the Broncos were better against the Jets with tempo. Felt like they used it a lot in the first quarter and then kind of went away from it. Shawn Payeyton got asked today about that uptempo offense since it seems his quarterback Boon Knicks thrives in it and the offense just looks more fluid. Here’s what he said. Look, a lot of it is dependent on what personnel we’re in. What do we want to get to? Yeah, I think it’s it’s always part of our plan and then uh you know getting into it whether it’s run or pass is is um there’s a list right in front of me. It’s just a matter of you know where we’re at field position wise and what we’re trying to accomplish. Okay, so he says it’s part of the plan. But here’s what I want everyone to listen to. This is the follow-up question. Why did you get away from the tempo? Sean’s answer is fascinating. I I can’t recall that we went away. meaning I, you know, there there are times when like the touchdown was kind of a uptempo play. So, um, you know, we’ll we’ll use it each week, um, where we see fit. Oh my gosh, I just crack up at that. I can’t recall that we went away. And then his example is the touchdown, the only one of the day that happened in the first quarter, which they ran with tempo. Because if you’re watching the game clock, there’s like 20 seconds on it and there’s 40 seconds on the play clock. You’re sitting there going, “All right, end of the first quarter. I’m going to go get another cup of coffee, fire up breakfast, whatever.” They get to the line, 3 4 seconds to go. Snap the ball. One, two seconds on the clock. Well-designed play. Nate Atkins wide open for the touchdown. That was the very last play of the first quarter to put the Broncos up 10-6 after one. It just cracks me up that he says, “I can’t recall we got away from it.” Well, to everyone and their brother watching, you clearly did get away from it. And then your example is, well, we were we were tempo on the touchdown. Yeah, we all know you were tempo on the touchdown cuz that’s when your offense looked the best the first quarter, not when it fell apart the last three quarters. I just thought that was funny that Shawn himself either didn’t know it or more likely didn’t want to acknowledge that yes, my offense was stuck in the mud because I stopped with the tempo. Yeah. And I I kind of get not exactly where he’s coming from, but you can’t go tempo all the time, especially with an all-time great defense. You want to try to get, you know, sustained drives and uh keep your defense off the field so then when they are on the field, they can be at their best. So, I get that you can’t always do tempo. And especially I think Shawn where it gets a little muddy is when he’s always doing these um you know like line shifts basically on on the offense where he’s subbing in three four different guys per play. That’s when you really slow it down because that gives the opposing team a chance to make a substitution themselves. So I think that’s more the issue. Um I I I don’t blame him for getting away from tempo at certain points in the game. Um, like I said, you um I mean, we saw the classic example of Chip Kelly when he was with the Eagles. It works for a little bit, but if that’s your bread and butter, I don’t know how sustainable that is. Sure. And I think that’s a fair point that because A, your offense is going to get worn out. B, your defense is going to get worn out if they’re not getting long breaks in between series. And C, yes, the opposing defense can adjust at some point. If tempo was the golden secret to football, then every team at every level would run it for 60 minutes every game. I get all that, but there’s such a line in the sand with this football team of what works and what doesn’t. What did they do in the fourth quarter in Philly? They finally went tempo. They had a sense of urgency. They were down 17 to3. They came out against the Jets, looked good, looked fast, looked hungry, and then it just came to a screeching, grinding halt. I mean, think about watching that football game from 8:15 on on Sunday morning. It was rough. It was like, when does red zone start? You know, I want to escape with a win. I’m glad they escaped with a win, but I’m ready for a little Scott Hansen in my life and seven football games. Give me some entertainment. I mean, if you if you partied late into Saturday night and you woke up on Sunday not feeling so hot, you were ready for a nap after the last three quarters of that football game. And uh just find it funny that the head coach didn’t really acknowledge. which again, I don’t think he didn’t know, but he didn’t acknowledge that, yeah, our offense was pretty brutal once we stopped going tempo. Yeah. No, and I I I get it. I just I don’t think he’s going to say how he truly feels about it, which is that tempo is great, but it’s not the key to everything. Like you said, if tempo was that great, every team would do it all the time. It’s just not sustainable. And I think this Broncos team is built for to rely on the run game and the defense, which does not really, you know, lean itself into going tempo and the air raid kind of offense. So, I think it’s just not what’s best for this team, you know, in all four quarters. They kind of had to do it. The game dictated it for them in Philly when they had success, but I don’t think you can come out the gate and do that for all 60 minutes. Okay. So, what does the quarterback Bo Knicks think about being in the no huddle? Plus, Bo was asked about being too hard on himself. I think we’ve all sort of felt that through six games this year. You’ll hear from QB1 next. to the Broncos need some accountability on offense. Who’s holding Shawn accountable? Like like I’m being serious today. Who’s sitting down in Shawn Payeyton’s office and going, “Sit down, man. We need to talk.” Because if he thinks everybody’s going to be all good because they won the football game. Sure, that is the most important part. But the way it looked, somebody needs to be holding Shawn Payeyton account. Well, Denver Sports 1043, the fan. It’s not going to get fixed in one week. We need to trade some players near the deadline.” Uh, I’m actually with you. I don’t think we need to trade players, but I agree with the gist of your text. I think the Broncos need to acquire players, specifically skilled position players, wide receiver number one on my list. And I would be fine with giving up draft picks. And Neilo and I talked a lot about that last night. Uh I heard the morning show jumping on to the Jaylen Wadd train today. Oh my gosh, you should have heard how excited Brandon Stokeley was when Mike Evans brought up Jaylen Wadd. Stoke said, and I’m curious your thoughts on this, Dante. Stoke said Jaylen Wadd for a first round pick. Done. Signed, sealed, deliver. I have no problem with it. He’s that high on Mr. Waddle. He would give up the Broncos first round pick to acquire him. I’m not even sure it would cost that much. That’s certainly not where I would start if I was Shawn Peyton and George Payton. But um listen, Stoke played receiver in this league for a long, long time. I trust him as much as anyone at the station when it comes to evaluating that position. and his eyes lit up when the name Jaylen Wadd was brought to his attention this morning. I like Jaylen Wadd a lot. I’m not giving up a first round pick for him though. And I’m with you. I don’t think it would cost that. I you could probably get it done for a second or maybe a third and a fifth or something like that if you want to com combo a couple picks together to get kind of the equivalent of a second round pick. Um I think he’d fit great here. I think he does something that Courtland Sutton doesn’t really do, that Troy Franklin doesn’t really do. They’re very different kinds of wide receivers. So, I think he’d fit in great here. Um, I don’t know. I just don’t know if the Shawn Payne’s not that type of guy. Usually, usually he doesn’t spend the big free agency money on a wide receiver. Usually, he doesn’t make the big trade on a wide receiver. Typically, I mean, from what I’ve seen at least, it feels like he invests more in the defense than anything. And he loves to draft and develop at that position. You’re right about that. He did that a lot in New Orleans. He’s tried to do it here, you know, Mims and Franklin and Bryant. guy even like Devon who he traded to the Saints for a couple of picks. But maybe this will be the year he pulls the trigger on a big trade. He did sign off on paying Courtland Sutton big money this off seasonason though. So he he he made it clear that he wants Sutton to to more or less finish his career with the Broncos. The 6453 says right holding is on every play. How do the Chiefs get away with no penalties in a whole game? Yeah, you you’re preaching to the choir, my friend. I don’t get that one at all. I saw a good tweet today. Hey, it was fun while it lasted. Five games of the Chiefs on a level playing field with everyone else. They go two and three. And then anyone who watched Sunday Night Football, that was a frustrating one certainly against the Lions. The 8727 is not just tempo. He’s just over complicating play calling for no reason. That’s from Ryan. Ryan, appreciate you putting your name on it. Yeah, I I mean I think Ryan’s on to something. It’s It’s not temp it’s not just tempo. I think tempo’s part of it, but Dante, I thought, made a lot of great points of, you know, we’re just trying to get too cute at times in this Broncos offense, but I think no huddle can help solve it. And Bonick got asked today about what he likes going no huddle. I just like it because it gets the defense off balance. They, you know, don’t have many calls that they can get to when you go quick. And uh we just play well from uh you know quick game and and uh getting to the ball seeing what they’re in just finding answers and going. I think it um it’s just tough on defense as always has been. I think that’s the biggest reason is because it limits what a defense can do. Um you know you’re you’re more attacking them instead of letting them you know sit back and attack you. So I think it’s it’s uh it’s worked well when we’ve done it and um you know so I’m sure we’ll continue to do it. I mean come on. How can you not listen to 34 seconds of Boon Knicks raving about no huddle and take away this guy wants to go no huddle? I mean, he talks about it makes it easier to attack the defense. I love doing it. We’re going to continue to do it. It keeps them on their heels. Bonix says a lot of words. I don’t know if he says a lot of meaningful words in the sense of I think he’s smart, but I also think he’s got some cliches in him when he gets in front of a hot microphone. I didn’t think there were any cliches in there. I’m taking a lot of stock in what Bo Nicks just told us. He likes going no huddle. I promise you he’s expressed that to Shawn privately and he did it publicly today in front of the media knowing that that quote would make it to the airwaves, make it in the newspaper, etc. Yeah, absolutely. That was not cliches. That was not him just talking just to talk, which, you know, we’ve seen a lot of, you know, quarterback speak in the NFL. Um, I think he likes it, but I think what he likes about it is kind of what I was trying to get at in terms of reduce and what Shawn Payeyton spoke about in terms of reducing. Um, it’s more about h knowing what the defense is throwing at you. And when you’re in a no huddle or you’re in hurry up, um, the defense is very simple. The there’s only a few calls they can get into. There’s only a few coverages they’re going to throw at you. They’re probably not going to throw any like exotic blitzes at you, exotic coverages or anything like that at you. So, I think that’s more what he’s getting at, but I think there’s ways to get that done without necessarily going no huddle all the time. To me, it’s more about just less substitutions throughout the game. And Sean Payton kind of hinted at it and let’s see if you know he follows through on that on Sunday. Yeah. No, I think that’s fair as well that it’s it’s not only going quick, but it’s going simpler. Uh, for sure. Bon Knicks also today I thought another great sort of revealing, thoughtful answer from the Broncos QB. I don’t think, and this is just my opinion. I’d be curious what other folks uh check in on this, I don’t think Bonix looks like he’s having a ton of fun this year. I thought Bonix last year played with a lot of joy, played with a lot of passion. We all know the gift of him staring down the Raiders guy in Las Vegas with the the eyes that look like they could see through your body. I thought Bo played with swagger last year, confidence, joy, all the above. Haven’t seen a ton of that in six games. Seen it in spurts here and there. Um, I don’t think he’s necessarily in a sophomore slump full-blown, but I think he’s in a little bit of a sophomore slump a third of the way through this season. And is he being too hard on himself? QB1 got asked about that this afternoon at Broncos Park powered by Common Spirit. Well, you just got to um, you know, hold the highest standard um, yourself and um, you do the best you can to be as great as you can be. And, you know, to me, it’s not letting guys like Court and the O line and all those guys down. you know, they’ve been working hard for a long time. It’s my job to go out there and do my job and execute at a high level and um you know, not let them down. So, I’m motivated, you know, by a lot of reasons. Um, you know, not don’t let the team down, do whatever I can to help this team win. Uh, but also, you know, I hold myself to a high standard and, you know, I just think that goes a long way. Um, but there’s also times, you know, get away from football and, you know, catch your breath, take a break, and then, you know, when you get back to it, you’re going full speed. Bo went on to talk about how he’s tough on himself and he thinks it’s how he grew up. Said it was how I was raised. My dad was my coach so he was tough on me and it kind of continued. Continuing to quote, “I hate making mistakes. I hate not doing the correct thing and can be tough on myself but at the same time I give myself some grace too and just move on and go to the next play. Sure, I’m going to make another mistake and I’ll have to fix that when it happens. It’s the routine ones. the routine ones that I should hit that I probably get the most irritated about, but next time I’ll just have to hit them and move on. Has Boon Knicks been too hard on himself this year, Dante? Has that joy been a little zapped out of his game as you watch the Broncos every Sunday? I think he has been too hard on himself, but I think all the great quarterbacks are kind of hard on themselves. You know, Brady talks about, you know, some of the small misses he has and how, you know, perfection it needs to be. And same with Peyton Manning. Same thing. I mean, um, Stokeley’s told many stories about Manning getting on guys in practice. So, I think all the greats are very hard on themselves and hold themselves to a very high standard, which I don’t want Bonick to get rid of that. I want him to have a high standard for himself. And I think losing the joy for it, I think that’s I don’t know if this is, you know, more like philosoph philosophical, but I feel like the older you get in the NFL, you kind of realize, hey, this isn’t a game anymore. Like, this is my job. And Phil’s talked about how, you know, the best memories in football when you’re playing on Friday nights with your high school and your buddies and then once you get to the NFL, it’s just very um, you know, rigid and it’s all kinds of different guys and situations, you know, providing for their families and whatnot. There’s just an extra seriousness that comes along with NFL football. And I think a lot of guys kind of lose that love and joy for football as their career goes on. I think it’s a job, right? I think that’s what you’re hitting at there is that it’s their profession now. And it’s a lot easier when you’re in high school to just be like, “Yeah, I’m really good at this game.” And I go out there and I have a blast and then I go hang out with my friends and then I go to class and then you get to college and yeah, it’s becoming more and more of a job, especially with NIL and all that, but still, you’re the big man on campus. You’re the you’re the top dog. It’s look at Johnny Manzel. I think it’s a lot of fun to be number one QB at a big time university, especially if you’re winning. And and I know Bon Knicks didn’t win national titles at Auburn and Oregon, but he won a lot of football games for both those two schools. I’m sure Bo Knicks had a lot of fun in college. And then he gets here and he sort of carries that joy over into his rookie year. And then Shawn Payton’s got to go tell everyone he’s going to be a top five QB in the league soon. And I think Bo is playing like a guy who’s trying to be a top five in QB in the league rather than just playing like Bonex. Absolutely. But I mean, there’s a reason you don’t see a 10-year vet play like the way Cam Scatteraboot does where that joy and just that genuine love for the game. It kind of gets, you know, zapped out of you as your career goes on. You realize it is more of a job. So hopefully the uh or not hopefully, but I I think the Shawn Payeyton comments maybe accelerated that process of Bon Knicks kind of not having not finding as much joy in it. But I think you can find joy in football in a different way almost versus maybe it’s not like oh it’s me going out there with my buddies and winning every game but you can find joy in the process of it like I’m Tom Brady spoke about it. It’s like no like I I still loved going out there. It’s just a different kind of love for the game. Yeah. And even you know Scotty Sheffler famously spoke about it this summer of like yeah it’s fun but I hoist the trophy. I kiss my wife. I hug my kid and then I just try to do it again. You know, Josh Allen had a quote on it, you know, like there’s more to life than football. Oh, yeah. Bill Bill’s fans didn’t take too kindly to that one. He now that he’s married, you know, he’s like, “Well, there’s more to life than football.” They’re like, “Dude, get us one Super Bowl and then you can say there’s more to life than football.” But yeah, Gabe Lanniskog even spoke about that this summer of like we won the cup, it was awesome, and then I was hurt for three years. I don’t I don’t think Gabe Lanniskog had a ton of joy in his life over the last three years. Yes, he’s rich, he’s famous, he’s handsome, all the above, but still a human being. And then Bonix is uh still a human being trying to navigate his way through this thing. All right, coming up next, very, very interesting list from our guy Jake Shapiro. Denver Sports 1043, The Fan. Denver Sports Station 1043. the f talking about Dante and I’s conversation. Bonix maybe not having as much fun. Uh here would be my short 8383 finding his way. I I thought he found his way in October, November, and December last year. Guy looked like he found his way pretty well. He broke records for uh rookie touchdown passes, 29 or or tied it, whatever it was. He threw a ton of touchdown passes. He was top five in the league. I think he found his way last I think it looks like he’s not having as much fun this year. Aussie chimes in and says, “Really? When Drew Lock was singing on the sidelines, Denver media crucified him. Now Nick Knicks needs to have more fun. Pick a lane.” Aussie, I don’t think you’re wrong. I think there was a lot of people that didn’t love Drew Lock’s antics, if you will. Uh, the rapping, the dancing, the Buzz Lightyearine down there in Houston. Uh, but I’m the wrong guy to text that to. I never had a problem with it. I actually like Drew and uh his personality, if you will. We’ve had some stale QBs in this town. Stale. And Drew was not stale at all. You want to talk about stale? Trevor Simeon was stale. Drew Lockach was not. Drew was fun. So, while the point is wellreceived, Aussie, I was not a Drew Lockach hater by any stretch. And I would like to see Bonix have some more fun. All right, we don’t have a ton of time, so there’s two things I want to hit on. one. Do you know what happened 18 years ago today? Dante Gomez is a very notable moment in Denver sports history. I do, but I would not have known if it wasn’t for Twitter. Okay. Uh the Rockies won the NLCS over my Arizona Diamondbacks. Actually, they did. They brought their brooms to Kors Field. The iconic moment. Troy Tulowitzky across the diamond to Todd Helton. He puts his two hands in the air. Eric Burns would talked a lot of smack in that series. Uh gets a face full of dirt to send the Rockies to the World Series, capping off 21 of 22 epicness that was Rocktober. First and only fall classic for that franchise. It’s funny you say that. So I’m I’m from Arizona, grew up there, you know, the first 23 years of my life. It’s very like iconic in my mind and uh like I can always picture Eric Burns sliding into first base and losing that NLCS right there. Yep. Yep. They won that game six to four. The the key to that series was they went down to Arizona and won the first two games and then got back here and were able to dismiss the Diamondbacks and oh, I still maintain it. The Rockies didn’t have nine days off. We may have had a parade. They were the hottest team in baseball. I mean, 21 of 22 is unheard of in that sport. And baseball’s a rhythm type game and they just got out of rhythm. I know Clint Hurdle, who was the manager, took them down to Arizona, try to stay in it, but you can’t simulate that atmosphere. and they ran into a Red Sox team that just smacked them around, I think it would have been a lot different series. Had it started 24, 48 hours later and not 9 days off for the Rockies. Uh it came came to a screeching halt Roctober did. First grade as it was getting swept in the World Series was obviously disappointing. Yeah, I don’t know if they’re winning that series, but I I’ll give it to you. I think it’ll be a much more competitive series than what we saw. That that Red Sox team was good, though. That they had some real deal guys on that team. Um, you know, Big Poppy, Manny, uh, Dustin Padroya, you name you know, Veritech, Mike LOL. So, that was a really good and deep team as well. I would argue probably a better team than the Rockies, but the Rockies were so hot that those probably would have clashed for just a more competitive maybe five, six, seven game series. Sure, I think that’s a fair take. And don’t sleep on Matt Holiday and Garrett Atkins and Troy Tulowitzky and Brad Hop and Willie Tavarz and Cory Sullivan. Ryan, I can name the whole roster. I’ll I’ll stop. Jake Shapiro came up with the five worst teams in Denver sports history. Uh to sort of flip this thing around based on the 2025 Rockies who lost 119 games. Want to run through it real quick. He has a tie for fifth. The 1963 and 64 Broncos little before my time, but both teams went 211 and one. Yeah, that wouldn’t go over real well in Broncos country today. Number four, well Jake’s a Rapids guy. He’s got a Rapids season in there. They were a pathetic 517 and 12. Number three, we remember this one well. This 201617 ABS had 48 points. Man, they may get 48 points by New Year’s with a team this good this season. And uh people forget that was Jared Bennar’s first year. Patrick Wah had just quit. I give Joe Sacki credit for not firing BNR. He’s made the playoffs every year since. Number two, this year’s Rockies 43 and 119. Which brings us to the big reveal. the worst team in Denver sports history. Jake has the 9798 Nuggets who went 11 and 71. Got any reaction to that list? No, I mean those are all very good answers for bad teams. I can’t say I’m super knowledgeable about all of them. Uh I I knew the Nuggets were pretty bad for a series or a while there, so I was expecting them to come on uh come up on the list at some point. Um, I think a different list could be fun as well of maybe worst teams that had high expectations, too, because I think a lot of those teams had very low expectations going into it, which almost makes it a worse season in my brain of like if you know they’re going to be bad and they’re bad, it’s like, yeah, whatever. But if you think they’re going to be competitive or even good and they end up being bad to me, that’s more of the heartbreaking uh seasons in sports. Sure. But winning 11 games in an NBA season is tough to do. Just like winning 43 games in a Major League Baseball season is tough to do. Fun list. I would encourage people to go check it out at denverports.com. The Rapids getting a shout out. Good. Good on Jake for including the uh well, I’m sure the Rapids aren’t thrilled they’re included, but apparently they had a really bad year in 2023. Can’t say I was real tuned into that. I thought they had a chance to be special and they showed it yesterday. They’re sitting at 4 and two. I’m not going to be too negative here. Broncos got a win and that defense was special.
