3 wins to start the year immediately followed by 3 losses. This was by **far** the worst of the bunch so far. For a multitude of reasons.
* I feel so bad for Tarasov. He was ***unreal*** tonight. Usually we do a pretty good job of limiting shots by the opposing team. Not tonight. He got bombarded and stood tall to keep us in it all throughout. Got beat on an absurd angle shot by Hughes, a redirect, and shocker, a turnover in our own zone right in front that Hischier buried. **Tarasov deserves better.**
* Our opening PP was stellar. Generated a ton of chances. Reino off the post. But we couldn’t finish. Everything after that? Pretty crappy. We had a good night vs Ottawa but I fear this is where Tkachuk/Barkov’s absence is gonna *really* hurt in tight games.
* New Jersey kicked our ass after the initial 15min or so. We didn’t have much of a counter punch. Offense was lackluster. We were carried as long as we were by Tarasov’s heroics.
* Cody Glass is forever on my shit list for choosing to start shit with Mackie of all people
Some of the early concerns I have is with all of PoMo’s line mismatching to try and see what sticks, there’s quite a bit of chemistry lost and we’re asking guys who used to be in smaller roles to step up vs better players and competition and everything feels disjointed. Bennett’s the most egregious example as is effectiveness has been super neutered compared to how he’s been able to play like a wrecking ball in past years.
It’s a *long* season boys. Honestly, I’d sign up right now just to be .500 by the time Tkachuk gets back in 2026.
• four regulars out, including two best players
• second half of a back to back
• on the road against a playoff team in their home opener

We lost 2 of our leading 3 point scorers from last season, so I can accept offense will be a lot harder to come by. But the defense HAS to shore up.
Not going to doom (unless we lose to the sabres Saturday) but hopefully Paul can work his magic and figure out some scoring because we will need it to stay in the playoff hunt before Chucky comes back. Long season and we’ve had ruts before , just need to figure it out before it becomes an issue.
To focus on the positive; Tarasov is actually good. He’s played very well in his two starts and I wish he could get rewarded with a win. If nothing else, we should feel comfortable with him and so should the team.
Oof. Gotta get some sustained offensive zone time. Poor execution and poor gap.
We gotta start subbing in some of our scratches eventually right? Everybody seems exhausted already.
Pros:
Tarasov
Cons:
Everything Else
the talent is there they just gotta find a way to execute
Tough sledding time to whether the storm and stay afloat until the reinforcements come.
I’m not a doomer, but this is going to be a long tough season. They just gotta win enough to make it to the play offs and hopefully we get some key players back by then.
