or the second time this young fall season, the Scorpions decided to throw out all five SF Giants pitching prospects on the team in a single game, and this time, the pitching staff helped lead Scottsdale to the win, though the team defense was not helping at first. We’ve got six Giants in the lineup today to review…and I have in-person briefs on the performance of all six!
Scottsdale: Scottsdale Scorpions 5, Glendale Desert Dogs 3
Giants Prospects to Spotlight:
- SP Spencer Miles: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K – Mid 90’s fastball, but his curve was working better. Had a leadoff walk, and a catcher throwing error let it become an unearned “earned” run. Overall, a solid couple of innings. Nothing stood out, but he was efficient.
- RP Ricardo Estrada: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 Balk – 91-92 fastball, change sits around 87, not much separation. 77-78 curve looked good, not impressed with the slider, low-80’s, hanger. He threw three sliders…two were hangers, one was hit for a single, the other a 420+ foot out in Scottsdale’s center field. Lost his control late in his second inning of work
- RP Ryan Murphy: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP – 91-93 mph fastball, lost velocity quickly after his first turn on the bench. Threw a slider, curve, change, and cutter. Nothing particularly sharp. A hit batter on a change had immediate walk out him into trouble for his only run. Control really disappeared after his second inning break, he was nowhere near the plate on most pitches.
- RP Juan Sanchez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K – 93-94 fastball, changeup was 83-86. He has potentially good separation on the two, but the faster changeups were fouls. Fastballs gained a tick in his second inning, and he got a lot of whiffs on his change up in that inning. Has more control than command, and he did get helped in his strikeouts.
- RP Jose T. Perez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 WP, 2 HBP – 93-96 fastball, 85-87 change, flashed a curve three times that got called strikes twice and a whiff once. . Threw harder the more pitches he threw in his first inning. He was wild high, with two wild pitches. In his second inning, his control again dissolved, as he hit a couple of batters and walked one before being lifted in the 9th inning.
- SS Maui Ahuna (SF #12): 0-4, 3 K – A couple of soft liners were hit to him early. One he didn’t glove cleanly on the hop but still got the out and held the runner, the other he got clean and showed off his arm to get the out. Helped turn a great 6th inning double play. He didn’t really get tested much defensively otherwise. Offensively, he struck out his first time, the lined out to left in the 4th. Offensively, he struggled, striking out twice swinging and a third time looking.

Eye opening game for him.
