Good Morning Football: TNF Recap, Ron Rivera Joins, Mad Minute & SNF Preview
You get the sense that it’s a
Friday. People need their
weekend to come. But indeed, the football weekend just
started October 17th. It is.
I’m Jamie Erdahl here in Los Angeles with Manti Te’o, as
always to my left, and Isaac
Rochelle, Notre Dame Day on a Friday in studio. Kyle Brandt,
you had Isaac there for about
five minutes. He on his way back across the country, he ran
a full blown marathon. And now
he’s back here at the table. Kyle, make you feel lazy at all?
No, not at all. It just reminds
me of Joe Flacco. You just jumped to different cities and
do incredible things when you
get there. Sometimes in prime time, sometimes on television.
We had an all time Thursday
night game last night, an all time Thursday night game. I’m
so excited to talk about it. We
have a great game to start the show with. I know everyone is
chomping at the bit, let’s do
this. Good morning football chomping on old trapper. They
are. Come on. Welcome to Good
Morning Football presented by Old Trapper. I’m going to do
something real jarring for the
table. Jamie, Manti, Kyle and Isaac here on a Friday. No
pleasantries. Kyle, you have a
highlight in your hand. The game was great last night.
There were some old dudes
slinging the ball around the block, and then a really young,
great pass catcher. He had a
night, too. Why don’t you show us the highlight, my friend? I
think we should. I love this
game. I just am madly in love with the football game we
watched last night. I’m so
excited to talk about with all of you. And here we go. We
mentioned it earlier. Brees and
Brady the oldest matchup ever. Both these guys are north of 40.
Would they put on a show. Third
and 11 early Rodgers going downtown D.K. Metcalf got it 39
yards perfect throw. Perfect
catch. That was before the play. There was like a little sweet.
Nothing that he whispered to
him. And then DK does a little out and up. He’s got about a
five inch advantage on the
corner. He makes the catch. DK only had three catches on the
night, though there was not a
lot after that. Five plays later, Rodgers is the Bengals
rush three, drop eight and then
eventually have a fourth pass rusher. Rodgers just navigating.
Navigating, negotiating.
Touchdown Jonnu Smith. Steelers strike first. They would add a
field goal and they were up ten.
Nothing. And you thought this is how this was going to go.
Bengals can’t play D. Flacco
can’t do anything. But we’re just getting started. Flacco
chase 15 yards down to the
Steelers 30. Keep on going. Six plays later Flacco up top to
Chase. After Chase. He had
another touchdown nullified. He makes this catch. The crazy
thing about Chase is he didn’t
have any of these grand slam home runs. He didn’t have the
75 yarder we’ve seen him have.
He was all short to medium distance and it was a tough
Ja’Marr Chase last night who
had to fight for everything. And he won most of those fights
10 to 7. Now Rodgers is like I
want to go deep. I’m throwing it to DK. But no. Picked off by
Jordan Battle, who won that
battle over Rodgers interception. Bengals get the
ball back. Second and four from
the Steelers 29. This guy got paid two T Higgins gone 29 yard
touchdown. And Flacco is
feeling it right. Then you’re like is this going to be one of
those nights. Is Flacco really
going to do this. He was because Rodgers again goes to
DK. And how about this play by
D.J. Turner DK is going to catch it. One of the strongest
people in the world. And D.J.
Turner rips it out. This is an interception an interception
back to back for Rodgers, who’s
basically in the all time Hall of Fame for not throwing
interceptions. Let’s go to the
second half, though. Third quarter 20 to 10 Cincinnati.
And on a third and 18 Rodgers
makes his best throw of the night. This was so pure and so
clean. And Pat Freiermuth.
Steelers trailed 20 to 17. Next Bengals drive Flacco up top
Andre yeshivas from Manti Te’o
Hawaii. And he says Mahalo for the perfect pass. Flacco loves
it. They lead by three going
into the fourth quarter. Flacco again in the red zone over the
middle. No offense no offense.
We haven’t said his name in a while. I’d love to see him get
in the end zone. Flacco fired
up third touchdown of the day Rodgers puts on his helmet and
goes to work. Jaylen Warren
tough all night. The little ball of butcher knives runs for
a big game. He finished 16 for
127. That was his longest run of the season for 36 yards. Six
plays later the big man 300
pound tight end Darnell Washington. They tried all
night to get him involved. He
does the six seven celebration because he’s six foot seven and
it’s funny. My kids tell me
it’s not funny anymore, but they won’t stop saying it. And
then we have this a perfect
throw from Flacco and Chase just drops one. Al Michaels
said. The headline is man bites
Dog and Flacco thinks that’s hilarious. Meanwhile, Rodgers
now late in the fourth quarter
they’re down six on a second and 20 out of the pocket
looking Freiermuth gone 68
yards. This game is awesome I love it 31 to 30. The Steelers
go up and Chase is like I got
to catch 50 balls. And we’re going to lose at home to a 41
year old quarterback. Hold on a
second. This was so pure. The safety over read went to the
sideline. Freiermuth was right
there. And the celebration. This is the abridged version of
it. We’re going to get to the
unabridged version shortly because it’s absolutely
hilarious. Ensuing Bengals
drive, though two minutes left in the game on a first and ten
down one Flacco Chase wide open.
There’s no one even close to him. That is his 16th reception
of the game, a Bengals
franchise record. If you’re wondering, the all time record
holder is still Brandon
Marshall with 21 for the Broncos. Two plays later, 147
left the game as Evan McPherson
is waiting to come on Higgins, the walk off touchdown no! He
slid and now Michael says,
brilliant, brilliant. He slides down there, they milk the clock.
They milk it, they milk it.
After McPherson comes on, who once took heat for coming out
to watch the halftime show at
the Super Bowl, I thought it was cool. Makes the kick.
Bengals go up by two. But hold
on. You think that’s enough? Wait sports fans, there’s still
more time. We get to watch the
greatest Hail Mary thrower of all time. Throw one of his
greatest Hail Mary throws of
all time. Aaron Rodgers is going to chuck this thing 70
yards. It gets to the goal line
where it is batted down and the Bengals win. Zac Taylor feeling
it. Flacco and Rodgers all time
entertaining night on a Thursday evening 3331 I could
not love it more. Put it in all
our veins. Afterwards we heard from both starting quarterbacks.
Let’s check in with the
victorious younger version of the starting quarterback, Joe
Flacco. I love doing this. I’ve
been doing it for such a long time. When you’re out there
with the guys and you’re and
you’re doing what you want to do and you’re having success
and you can look in each
other’s eyes and just like you get that feeling, you know, of,
you know, bonding with somebody
else and just it’s a lot of fun and it’s a lot more fun when
that clock hits zero and you’ve
gotten the job done. This is the NFL. You know, we had a
chance to really open up some
space. But we’re four and two still first in division. Got a
couple you know home games
coming up back to back. Another Sunday night opportunity
against my former team. So I’m
not going to ride the roller coaster. And I know Mike isn’t.
And hopefully guys follow suit.
Trying to instruct the media in Pittsburgh as to how to assess,
evaluate and move forward
emotionally from that game. Aaron Rodgers is Joe Flacco,
though, has been a quote
machine since he arrived in Cincinnati. That’s two games
played in about seven days
since he was traded in the division to take down Rodgers
and the Steelers and the
Bengals. That was fire. That was electric. And Kyle, you
delivered on the highlight.
Manti, what did you take away from watching this game last
night, knowing you were looking
forward to a matchup that delivered? Yes, the matchup did
deliver, Jamie. And welcome to
my childhood everybody okay. So I want to say if you’re born
past the year 2000, this is the
football that we used to watch. There was a lot of talk about
how is Joe Flacco able to come
in here less than two weeks and do what he does? I said a quote
last year and I stand by it.
And last last night kind of affirmed it and confirmed it.
Football is a simple game
complicated by coaches. You had two quarterbacks last night
that know this game inside and
out. Now, in an era of quarterback guru, sideline
sidearm throws and fancy
cadences, these are guys that understands the fundamentals of
football. They know how to
dissect a defense. There has been a lot of arguments lately
about today’s quarterback and
that quarterback, those two quarterbacks. I believe that I
grew up in the golden era of
quarterback. These two gentlemen were in that in that
era. Tom Brady was in that era.
Peyton Manning was in that era Eli Manning, Drew Brees I can
go on and on. And why is it the
golden era? Because to answer the question that was being
asked on the broadcast, how is
Joe Flacco able to do this? I’ll tell you how he was able
to do this. The game plan was
simple. Get the ball to Jamaar Chase. That was the game plan.
In the event that they stick
help over to Jamaar Chase, Joe Flacco, go to Tee Higgins or
anybody opposite of Tee Higgins.
If they put both safeties over both sides, run the ball. That
was the most success that the
Bengals had running the ball in the past six weeks. Why?
Because when you have a threat
of a quarterback that can not only get the ball to the
receivers, that makes the
defense respect, respect the pass game that opens up your
run game and now you’re rolling
down that locomotive that is the Cincinnati Cincinnati
Bengals offense starts to roll.
So for all of those kids at home welcome to my childhood.
This is what it used to look
like. I know in a day of of ninja pressure cookers you guys
use all of these machines. You
guys are too, too focused on these machines and relied on
these machines. The
fundamentals of the game are simple, and I’m so glad that
these two, these two
quarterbacks were able to show that for us last night. What
did we just bring two brands
together? Ninja pressure cookers. Yes. It’s a great
machine I get it. But my
grandfather could cook the rice with just two cups of rice and
put his finger in the top of
the thing and cook the rice on the stove. He could do it. He
could survive an apocalypse. He
had a I need my ninja pressure cooker. He’s like your
grandfather’s, like the rice is
done the same way. Joe Flacco is like, that’s where Ja’Marr
Chase is. Yeah. Grandpa was
like, man, back in my day, I felt like my grandpa last night
watching the game. I was like,
you know, back in my day, I was telling my wife, back in my day,
this is how it was, like we
used to watch football like this. You know, this is
unbelievable. The crazy thing
for me when you talk about back in my day, these, you know, 40
and 41 years old, if you just
turn on the TV and you didn’t know anything about the
quarterbacks, nobody would
guess that there was 81 years of life between these two
quarterbacks like they played
so well. And like you’re saying, it did feel like, you know, the
old school days. But you
mentioned this. I think this is kind of like a run pass
complementing each other type
game. I mean, this Bengals team went into this game not really
rushing unbelievably well. And
then I I’m looking at it and I’m just thinking about what it
would be like to be sitting in
these meetings Monday. Tuesday. I know Zach Taylor went in
there and said, hey, this is a
divisional game. This is a trench game. This is a O-line
D-line game. And you saw that.
I mean, you saw Chase Brown have the best game that he’s
had all year. They had 100
rushing yards in the first half. Amante you’ve been in those
halftime speeches and you’ve
heard coaches talk. Nobody wants to be in the locker room
at halftime and you’ve given up
100 rushing yards. So I think it’s exactly what you said. I
think the rushing, what they
were able to do with Chase Brown, the rushing opened up
the pass game. And then then
you can let Flacco be Flacco. You can let you can just air it
out and play ball. So I was
just pleased with that and I was excited to see it. And
again craziest thing for me was
just these two quarterbacks playing so well especially
Flacco you know two games in
seven days. So part of this rushing offense here. I I don’t
even know if I’m if I’m capable
of talking about this game. I just all I want to do is just
gush about the game. I just
want to gush I mantai you got me going to a place that I had
already been going. I woke up
this morning like like inspired. I really mean that. I’m like, I
want I got out of bed like did
push ups and I’m like, I was going to have a bagel and bacon.
I’m like, no, I’m going to have
some egg whites and fruit. Like, I want to take care of myself.
I want to perform at a great
level in middle age. The second half, like what you’re talking
about, about these, these young
guys. I’m like, is there any way after the after halftime,
like, could Philip Rivers and
Matt Ryan come out like I want to see them bring them back,
like get drew out of here, get
Tom like I want to see Peyton. Like I think he can still do it.
I swear I want to see them.
This this had this great feeling. I’m getting goosebumps
right now. Like I a younger and
like, I’m watching those guys and I feel like it was the
senior tour, but they’re still
killing it. And there was this, this amazing generational image
that, you know, it was kind of
a cool deal that that Joe Burrow was there and like, Joe
Burrow looked like he was from
a different century than the other two quarterbacks. Joe
Burrow stand there. He’s got
this crazy hair hanging down and like, he’s so cool. Like,
that guy’s playing in the same
league as Flacco and Rodgers, who had gray beards and who’s
like, skin was all wrinkled and
he was just so. Rodgers was so ornery all night. It just it
was an incredible confluence of
generations and age and football and excellence.
Excellence. Because guys,
there’s two ways this game could have gone. It could have
gone. And all the hype for what
we do. And Amazon does this. Ha ha ha. These guys are old. It’s
this and that. And then the
football’s just kind of crappy. The football was excellent.
These guys combined for seven
touchdowns. I thought Rodgers was going to complete that Hail
Mary, which at 41 years old was
the longest pass that has been thrown in at least eight years.
It’s a phenom. It is really,
really cool, guys. In the wake of what happened in the Bengals
loss, Rodgers entered top five
all time in passing yards. Top five ever. And you know who he
passed. He passed Ben
Roethlisberger who also should have been out there playing
last night for the Steelers and
spot duty. I wanted Ben. The Bengals won. The Steelers lost.
Flacco is awesome. The Steelers
had problems on defense. Jamaar Chase is an alien. But as a
sports fan and as a football
fan and a guy in his bleeping 40s, I’ve been entertained by
many football games. I can’t
tell you how many football games have inspired me, and I
woke up this morning feeling
like I wanted to attack the day and attack the weekend because
of Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers.
And thank you for that. Can we see that video, the first one
that you saw of the
quarterbacks for Cincinnati sitting across the bench
together. It’s Flacco, Browning
and Burrow sitting there in street clothes Joe Flacco
everything about him in the
last week nay the last two years of his life. He
approaches the podium the same
way he approaches. Why has that man never looking at a surface.
He just sits there and he
crosses his hands and he crosses his ankles. And he’s
just like, whenever you guys
need me to sling it, I’ll be there. He doesn’t have to see a
play. Why is he wearing a
wristband at this point? I don’t think he needs it. I he
done seen everything. That’s
why. Jamie, you want to know why Mike Tomlin was so mad that
the Browns made that trade put
on last night’s tape. That’s why he was mad. You could give
the guy one day, you knew one
day. And somebody who used to play for the Baltimore Ravens
that was that is the Pittsburgh
Steelers greatest rival who used to dissect them all the
time. Not all the time, but a
lot of the times now is suiting up for the Bengals and is about
to play against the Steelers. A
lot of people thought, oh, is this gamesmanship by Mike
Tomlin? No, Mike Tomlin knows
what Joe Flacco can do. The reason why Jamie to your
question Joe Flacco sits over
there with his arms folded. He’s like I ain’t surprised.
Like this is what I do when you
understand football, the technicalities of football and
why this is so simple. That’s
why you can do that. Just just watch that I love that. I just
think Flacco I think the
adjustment is so simple. You know how it is. He’s going to
come in and they’re gonna be
like well we actually say it this way here instead. And he’s
like, yeah, I know, I know. You
say when it’s left, you say Lake instead of Lucy, I get it.
It’s like I’ve done this a
thousand times. It’s not that hard. But honestly, like my my
favorite, most hysterical image
last night. And as I’m gushing about this game, you reach a
certain point. Whether you’re a
professional football player or you’re a teacher or a dentist
or anything, you just. The
worst thing that could happen really in your life is like,
you don’t want to get injured
like injuries when you get to a certain age, suck it. Just they
tear the house down. The Rogers
reaction to his own linemen tackling him after this play is
so laugh out loud. Relatable.
So Freiermuth is going to score the touchdown and we
celebrating. It’s great. It’s
great hands on everything. But as Rogers goes to the sideline
watch this. Boom. He goes down
and watch how Rogers is. What he’s going to get up are. He is
so mad. And don’t tell me
that’s him celebrating being fired up. He is so angry. He
just got tackled by his own
lineman. He’s like, come on, get off me. I’m 41. You can
kill me by doing that. It’s so
relatable and so funny. It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen
this year. I get it, Kyle on
the different camera angle when he first is doing that. Skip I
had the real life thought that
I said that man skipping without leaving the ground.
That is how cautious he is
about his body. He is trying to celebrate in the most age
appropriate way that he
possibly can. And then the reverse angle being taken down
by this man, I mean, frankly,
this is how I feel when my kids do that thing where they hang
on my leg and they’re like,
walk, walk. And I’m like, I don’t want to lift your body
weight on my foot. I hate when
you do this. Stop it. Oh it’s perfect. Oh, it is so perfect.
Well done Kyle. Way to bring it
up. All right. That was it for Thursday night. We’re not done
talking about that game though
because we got to talk. Jamar Chase we got to talk about how
the AFC North moves forward
from this. But we also have games this weekend. So moving
on. We’re looking at Matthew
Stafford and Trevor Lawrence slinging it across the pond.
Now those guys seem like
they’re teenagers to us after last night. It’s wild out here
who comes out on top in this
pivotal week seven matchup that’s going down in London on
NFL network and NFL plus Kyle I
feel for Steelers tackle Broderick Jones. He just wanted
to celebrate with the famous
quarterback. He’s 653 11. He just wanted to hug Rodgers and
he almost crushed him Broderick
we see you. The Eagles and Vikings go head to head on
Sunday though. Can Carson Wentz
we’re still talking about Carson Wentz. It’s crazy. Can
he dish out a third straight
loss to his former team in Philly. This is fun. We’ll
answer that and more next on
Good Morning Football. Here we go. We get off me. Get off of
me. You’re gonna hurt me. And
everybody was ready. Good free and supportive adult
education centers near you.
Let’s turn our attention to a sleepy little 1 p.m. eastern
game on Fox on Sunday afternoon,
a game that has massive implications in the NFC. The
Eagles have dropped two
straight. The Vikings were in Europe for two games off of a
bye, and we’re not sure what’s
going on at the quarterback position. So with that, let’s
talk to Tom Pelissero, our NFL
network insider with us Carson Wentz JJ McCarthy Vikings.
Eagles. Tom, what do we need to
know about this game. Well, Jamie JJ McCarthy remained
limited in practice on Thursday.
Another sign that Carson Wentz could get another start on
Sunday against his old team the
Eagles. I will continue to reiterate this is not some type
of a soft benching for JJ
McCarthy. He had a legit high ankle sprain back in week two.
Those are generally 4 to 6 week
injuries. As I reported on Sunday. And JJ confirmed a
couple of days ago that ankle
is still not 100%. It impac his mobility. The Vikings want
to make sure that he is not
just fully healthy when he gets back on the field, but also
that he’s fully ready to go out
and play well. That requires reps which have been in short
supply basically since JJ
McCarthy got into the league as the 10th overall pick in the
24 draft. As for when he is
dealing with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, but a
full participant in practice
the past couple of days, Wentz appears to be good to go on
Sunday against the Eagles. As
for Philadelphia, defensive tackle Jalen Carter’s absence
was certainly felt in that
Thursday night loss to the Giants. That somehow already
feels like it happened a year
ago. Carter has already proclaimed publicly he is going
to play this week. Full
participant in practice Wednesday Limited on Thursday
is dealing with that heel, but
seems like it’s trending toward Jalen Carter being back in the
lineup Jamie. All right Tom
thanks. We’re going to get back to you a little bit about the
next game that we want to talk
about. So hang out for a second. Like I said Eagles Vikings in
Minnesota. We haven’t seen the
Vikings in a minute. What do you make of this game when you
look at the storylines. Well
look at the storylines. Obviously the quarterback
situation for the Minnesota
Vikings I think after last night’s game, you might as well
sign Tony Romo because Tony
Romo would do a really good job because he does know the Eagles
being an NFC. Yeah. Let’s go.
Let’s get him out there. Let’s go bring all the OGs back. Tony
Romo in there. But who is
playing for him Carsonentz Carson Wentz being a former
Eagle. Obviously he’s going
against a guy who has looked at as his replacement in Jalen
Hurts. So I’m really going to
look at Carson and his his experience against the Eagles.
Now it’s a different Eagles
team than when he was there. But I’m really rooting for this
guy. I think when we win a
Super Bowl with Nick Foles and he’s almost like, man, I got
him there. But I didn’t finish
this race for the Eagles. There’s there’s there’s a sense
of this is personal right. And
so I want I want that for Carson I want him to go out
there being the veteran guy in
that locker room and that veteran presence to be able to
go against his old team. I know
it’s in Minnesota. However, I do know that this this this is
a special game for Carson Wentz.
So that’s something that I’m going to be looking at in this
game. So it’s so funny. You’re
right I mean a lot of players will come in the media and be
like every game means it’s the
same. Every game is the exact same. You got to focus the same.
No Carson Wentz is definitely
looking at this. And this is my opportunity. They slept on me
all the things around it I look
at this game and I’m like this is a Eagles game. This is a the
Eagles narrative I feel like
I’m going crazy this year. If you went to any other coach in
the division, you said, hey,
after week six you’re going to be four and two and you’re
going to be leading the
division. Do you want that or do you not want that? They
would all want that. But now
everybody’s sitting here like the Eagles are falling off.
They’ve lost two straight. Who
are they I look at it as a team full of great leadership with
an awesome opportunity to
continue to improve. You don’t want to peak in October.
October is not the time to win
a Super Bowl. You need to win games. But it’s not the time to
win a Super Bowl. You want to
peak at the end of December. When you’re when you’re hitting
your trajectory that you need
to be on. So like we’re looking at it here, this hurts AJ Brown
connection. Saquon is still on
the roster I don’t know if everybody knows that even
though he’s not playing well,
he’s going to get to that point because of this team and the
adership. Also, I think a lot
of people are forgetting that. Just got there. He didn’t just
get there. Excuse me. He just
became the OC. You know growing pains. It’s one of two things,
right. It’s is there an
inability to get there or is it growing pains? I look at this
and say, this is growing pains,
and there’s no better team to have growing pains than this
roster. So I think this is just
such an important game for the Eagles to say, hey, media, hey
everybody who thinks that we
can’t get there, look at who we are. Saquon can say, hey, look
at who I am. Do you remember
last year. Do you remember we just won a Super Bowl. And
we’re we’re still a game or a
team with a lot of potential. I’m excited to see this game
for that. Good point. Listen I
only want just really two things from this game. I think
it’s I think it’s very st here..
Come on. I’m sure Dante can still sling that thing. Let’s
go. Let’s keep it up with the
retro uniforms. I want the retro players out there. If
Flacco and Rodgers can do it, I
want Culpepper and McNabb. Fascinating game. Aside from
those two guys potentially
getting on the field. One of the choruses you heard from
some of the Eagles apologists
after the last loss was, hey, they were four and two last
year. They were four and two
last year and they won the Super Bowl. Fair enough. I
think I might have even said it
myself. I don’t I don’t need 50 to nothing in this game. You
got to you got to show me
you’ve made some improvements. You got to keep pace. You don’t
want to go to four and three. I
agree with Isaac. I’ve said this many times that I don’t
care about style points in
September. I don’t care about style points in October. I mean,
it’s almost November. It’s not
it’s not critical time yet. But you got to win and you got to
show me something like, there’s
promise to come. I don’t need the greatest show on turf, but
I need something more than,
well, we hand it off to Saquon a few times, he doesn’t do that
much. And then we do the tush
push. And outside of that, we don’t really have anything. I
throw it to Goedert. He’s good.
But those are really our three weapons. I just need something
on the other side of it. Just
briefly. I’m a sucker for the storylines this morning. As you
guys know, I’m being very
sentimental this morning after what we watched last night.
Carson Wentz, for all the teams
that he’s played on and for all the kind of stoic ness he shows
about storylines and emotion,
this is a guy who is going to be the MVP of the NFL on the
Eagles and go on to win a Super
Bowl. He went down in the L.A. Coliseum with a knee injury,
and in so many ways, he never
got back up. And eventually he had his teammates when he got
injured again, make a shrine in
their own locker room for his backup quarterback Nick Foles,
who they rallied around loved.
And to this day, who is a hero in Philadelphia and has his own
statue. Carson Wentz was a
passenger for all of that. I think it will mean something to
him to face his Eagles team. I
think it will mean something to them to beat his Eagles team if
he can do it. And I hope if he
does, I hope Carson gives us a little taste of humanity
afterwards and says, yeah, it
feels good. You can’t imagine how many people he’s going to
have in that stadium in
Minnesota for this game. It would feel good. It reminds me
of the old adage, Minnesota
nice. And there’s Minnesota ice and there’s there’s people
flirt with that line a little
bit where you can come off all pleasant and whatnot, but there
can be a bit of a stoicature
to it. And I want to see some Minnesota midwestern ice from
Carson Wentz. Exactly. Hey,
what does that mean Tom Pelissero welcome back. We got
a look at an NFC East matchup.
While the Eagles are going to be busy in Minnesota and ice my
Jamie and Tom. That’s how I say
man I didn’t say he didn’t apply it I could be the ice and
Tom could be the nice Tom. It’s
commanders Cowboys. It’s going down. The Eagles are going to
be busy in Minnesota. What’s
happening with this game. The key is you don’t know that
you’re actually getting the ice.
On the surface it seems nice because we do it so passive
aggressively. As for CeeDee
lamb, he came right out and said it, telling reporters
yesterday he is back and will
play on Sunday against the commanders. In fact, CeeDee
said he could have played last
week, but they wanted to get to a place where he had no
restrictions, was fully past
that high ankle injury. It looked like it could have been
a lot worse when it happened
right there for CeeDee lamb, he said. There is going to be no
snap count that he is on Dak
Prescott. Looks like he said he looks fantastic. He is good to
go. Not as good of news right
now potentially for the Washington Commanders. Terry
McLaurin, who had returned to
practice on Wednesday, did not practice on Thursday. And my
understanding is again pending
practice today. There is real concern that Terry McLaurin
might miss another game because
of his quad injury. We’ll see whether he’s on the field. The
commanders will be out there
shortly here, but with Noah Brown out and with Deebo Samuel
also hurting, another week
without McLaurin and a big game against Dallas would certainly
have a big impact. Deebo also,
by the way, not practicing over the past couple of days. He is
still dealing with the heel
injury, been limited in practice the past couple of
weeks as well. But again, real
uncertainty from what I understand about whether either
of these guys will be on the
field on Sunday. All right. Tom cool. Great to see you.
Wonderful. Really a nice
morning to have a wonderful day for the rest of the day okay.
Enjoy your time to see you
Jamie. Thank you so much. Honestly, it’s such a pleasure.
Both the commanders and the
Cowboys are coming off losses. So when you consider they’ll be
facing off this weekend, what
do you want to get into? Well I want to get into Marshon
Lattimore. He is a former
teammate of mine. And he’s going. He’s a defensive back
for the commanders right now I
know that CeeDee lamb is is trying to get back. But I
remember watching this guy in
2017 when he won the Defensive rookie of the year, one of the
most competitive guys and so
competitive that I remember some of the battles that he had
with Mike Evans. It’s talked a
lot about in New Orleans, like these were one of those battles
where it would just it would
get personal, it would get competitive, and sometimes it
would get a little nasty. And
just so happens that the Cowboys have a receiver by the
name of George Pickens that has
been phenomenal this year, that has that type of nastiness too.
But the thing about Marshon is
he doesn’t back down now. He’s not the young the young chick
in the roosters nest anymore.
He’s a little older. However he’s still the same guy. And so
I’ll be looking for Marshon to
show up and really do his thing I love it. Here’s what I’ll say.
For the first time ever, I am
all in on the Cowboys. I have always been the guy who’s like,
Can the Cowboys this offseason?
I’m like, can they do something? Can we make a move? What are we
doing now? I feel like this
game is all about Dak. Dak is a guy who’s just consistently
been criticized and Jerry Jones
has been criticized. This guy is playing absolutely lights
out this year and he’s been
playing lights out in the absence of CeeDee lamb. So for
me when I think about this, I
feel like he’s circling this game and he’s saying, this is
my opportunity to kind of put
all this, this noise to rest. This is the time for people to
start talking about me as an
elite quarterback consistently. There’s no ifs, ands or buts
about it. I’m that guy. And
also, more importantly, this gives their team an opportunity
to start heading in the right
direction. They’re not the two, three and one team which the
one grosses me out, I would say
is just taking it all the way, but gives them an opportunity
to get back to 500 and get back
on the right trajectory they need to be on. But I’m all in
on Dak for this game for sure.
Isaac I love the one at the bottom of the screen. I just
love it. I can’t stop staring
at it. It’s like. It’s like someone who has like a weird
like mole on their face. You
just can’t stop looking at it. I’m sorry. It’s just it’s right
there in front of me. I that
record is so. It’s so unsightly. I just love it. And they almost
had a second tie last week.
Imagine if they were two two and two like that would be the
best. That thing. It won’t go
away. Even if they win the Super Bowl this year, that one
will be there for the rest of
time. You can’t erase it. It’s so weird and so odd. And that’s
why one of the reasons I love
ties but I Dak has been fantastic this season. I’m
fascinated by Jayden Daniels in
this game. A couple reasons why he made a huge mistake in that
bears game, and I’ve talked
about this a lot, and as we’ve celebrated the bears this year,
there’s a lot of people out
there who like the bears. Jayden Daniels handed them the
game. That fumble at the end of
the game was inexcusable. In the wake of that fumble and in
the wake of Jayden Daniels
being 500, there’s also some takes brewing out there. I
don’t know if you guys have
seen some takes about like, wait a minute on that 2024
draft class, could Drake may be
the best quarterback in this class after all. Could Caleb
come running? And I find all of
that just so spicy, so stupid, so shortsighted, and so like,
what are we talking about?
Jayden Daniels was really good against the bears. Really good.
He just made a huge mistake and
his team is 500 and he doesn’t have Terry McLaurin. But here’s
the thing none of that is going
to stop if you go and lose to the Cowboys who are two and
three and one and six and 12
and 50 or whatever their record is, Jaden made a big, high
profile mistake for the first
time. It felt like a little bit of a record scratch after that
beautiful, glorious rookie
season he had. Now he’s going to fall below 500. If he loses
to the Cowboys, this is time
for Jaden to re-introduce himself to remind himself to
Caleb Drake. Bo Nix, take
whoever you want. Michael Penix just had a huge win. I am still
the guy. We are still a team to
concern to be concerned with. So watch him in this game. A
lot to prove. And when have we
said that for Jaden since he entered the league? A lot to
prove. I think he’s finally
they’re all Kyle wants for Christmas is to see Troy Aikman
or Brett Favre play a game
again for the Packers, the Cowboys to tie another game so
he can see a two at the end of
their record. I want it, I want it, he needs it. All right.
It’s been established. Moving
on on Gmfb got a friend of the show checking in from London,
Sarah Walsh. She’s been busy,
but she’s prepping for the game now. We got Richard Graves
coming on to talk Rams. Jaguars.
He’s an old friend. I had to make sure I said Jaguars
correctly ahead of Richard
Graves coming on. It’s a showdown. It’s happening Sunday
morning. We got to talk about
it. As a kid growing up in Will the NFL’s trip to London
isn’t over just yet? We are
still across the pond. The Los Angeles Rams getting ready to
take on the Jacksonville
Jaguars. They’re in London and that is where we find our
friend Richard Graves. They
have practiced for the Jaguars today. And Richard this is the
Jags first game in London this
season. But they are very familiar with playing over
there. They are indeed Sherry
good morning to you. First of all in LA. Good afternoon here
from London where at the Jags
practice facility. The same one that the Jets used a week ago.
But this is going to be a game
week of firsts for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The first
time in 14 attempts that
they’ve come into a game week in London with a winning record.
It will also be the first time
that a team comes into a London game as late as their opponents,
the Los Angeles Rams. They
don’t arrive here until Saturday morning, and I promise
you, the sports scientists will
be poring over the data to see what the benefits are, or vice
versa. But Liam Coen, the head
coach, was asked flat out this week the Jags got into town on
Tuesday. Will that give you an
advantage? And he was pretty up front. He said, look, I don’t
know if it will give it an
advantage. I don’t know if it will give us an edge or not.
Come game day. One person. This
experience isn’t new for this season. Defensive back Greg
Newsome. You remember several
weeks ago he was here with the Cleveland Browns, flew back
home to the States, got traded
to the Jags. Well he’s back in town again this weekend. And we
asked the question on the show
yesterday. Has anybody else ever done this. Well never let
it be said that we leave
questions hanging out there. When Greg Newsome takes the
field at Wembley Stadium on
Sunday, he will in fact become the fourth player to have made
this journey the previous 3 in
2022. Latavius Murray He played for the New Orleans Saints,
then came back with the Denver
Broncos in 2019. Gary and Conlon came out here with the
Raiders and then the Texans,
the first player to do it, Adrian Peterson, back in 2017,
played at Wembley Stadium for
the New Orleans Saints, got traded on his return to the
Arizona Cardinals. They came
back here, played at Twickenham Stadium in a 33 to nothing
blowout loss. That team that
beat them, the Sean McVay led Los Angeles Rams Sherry Richard
Way to bring that all back
around. And not only are you just covering Jags and Rams,
the fact that you went and
found that information that Newsome is now the we said
fourth, fifth, fourth player to
play two in London. Incredible. Thank you for that. Fourth
player fourth player. Yeah. All
right Richard Graves we appreciate you. When we come
back here we’ll be joined by
current general manager of the Cal Bears. You recognize his
face? Former NFL head coach,
friend of the show Ron Rivera. We can’t let him get away
without talking Cal. UNC too,
of course. So don’t miss this here on Gmfb. If there’s
anything I know, there’s no
wrong way. As long as it’s your way. Yes, all customers get a
profit boost every NFL game day.
With skin safe technology, a waterproof design, and an LED
spotlight. The lawn mower line
by manscaped is the perfect tool to give your boys the love
they deserve. This is the story
of the one who knows. Being ready for the unexpected comes
from having a partner like
Grainger, whose professional of concussions on record before
any helmet goes on, safety goes
in. Let’s cut to the chase. We got a couple minutes with an
old friend of our show who used
to sit right here, three feet to my right, but now he’s busy
back in the college game.
However, a forever friend of the NFL and good morning
football, Ron Rivera. Good
morning to you, coach. Hey, baby. Let’s go wrong. You look
great. No, you look great. You
too man. You’re currently the GM at your alma mater. Cal,
we’re going to ask you about
this. However, I can’t let you go without 30s on just a
glowing referral for how great
Thursday Night Football was and the renaissance of the old dude
at quarterback. Not just one
old dude, but two old dudes. And we saw a real quarterback.
If you really think about it,
we saw real quarterbacking where guys stayed in the pocket.
They read through their
progression. They didn’t run, they handed the ball off. So it
was very unique and it was a
lot of fun to watch. Last night. It really was. I was pulling
for my guy Aaron though. He’s a
Cal Bear as well, so it’s been great to see them. Yeah. You
know, you have to reference
stuff like that. Coach, when you are a GM of a program. Now,
the alum that are doing well in
the NFL, what’s the biggest difference for you between GM
and coaching in the NFL? Well,
obviously the biggest thing is this portal and nil and revenue
share. It’s a whole new era
because of that. It’s really changed the game. And that’s
the hard part because you never
really know who your team is until the portal closes and
then you still got to kind of
hold your breath because players can opt out. But once
they opt out, they can’t play
that year. So but for the most part, that’s probably the
biggest difference. Coach, I
love it and I love that we watched that game and
everything last night. And
everything you’re doing with Cal is so cool, coach, but I
still consider you the 44th
overall pick in the 1984 draft to the Chicago Bears. Ron, the
three and two Chicago Bears.
Now, I’ve been talking about this for a couple of weeks. We
all have been there. They’re
very flawed for sure, but their record is above 500 and they’re
winning games that they usually
lose. What are your perceptions of the 2025 bears under Ben
Johnson? Well, what’s
interesting, though is you said it for the most part. They’re
three wins have come from
certain situations. Two of the wins are teams that they should
beat, the one team they should
not have beat. But they did. And because they continue to
play and they did make some
errors, but they beat the commanders and that was a heck
of a game. It was a good game.
It was one of those games that showed some resilience, some
toughness. And that’s what
you’re always trying to build, especially when it’s a new team.
So that was fun to watch. That
really was coach so happy to have you on here. Pleasure to
see you. Here’s my thing I
think about football in general 5 to 10 years ago would have
never guessed that you and Bill
Belichick would be participating in the same
football game. But we have it
Friday Night Lights. Can you just talk about that and just
how the college game has
evolved? Well, I think when you’re looking at it, what
college football is looking for
are some people that have some background in this type of
system. And both of us have
gone through this. Both of us have worked in situations where
you’ve had to deal with with
rosters and, and you had to deal with, you know, salaries
and contracts. And so it’s been
a little bit different. It’s been fun. But the hard part
really is, as I said, is you
have this portal and guys can go in it. You know, in the NFL
you can plan for free agents to
potentially leave. But in the portal you really never know
who’s going to be that quote
unquote free agent until they go in. Coach, I got a big
question. You know, we’re
staying on the topic of coaching. We’re almost at
midseason right now. And we’ve
already seen one coach fired. Others are on the hot seat. As
a coach, how difficult is it to
know that there’s there’s some attention on you in that manner,
but still be able to lead a
team? Well, it’s really about your perception on it, the way
you handle it. You know, I had
to deal with it in, in a couple of times as far as being a head
coach had to deal with in 2013.
And thank goodness my previous owner, he was patient enough to
give me that fourth game and
fifth game. And then once we got to that, we got on a hot
streak and we went eight in a
row. If our owner in Carolina didn’t have the patience, I
never get that eight game
winning streak. So you’ve got to hope and understand that
your your owner’s got to be
patient. But what you’ve got to do is you’ve got to continue to
do your job. You got to coach
as if every game is, is, is is a winnable game. You got to get
your players to understand that,
got to get them to believe that if they buy into it, you’re
going to win football games.
Ron, something I appreciate about you is your ability to
look at everything from a
zoomed out 30,000 foot view. There’s a ton of parity in the
NFL right now. 20 teams that
are have three wins. At least you got 11 four win teams at
this point. What do you make of
the current season and why the league is unfolding this way
almost to Halloween? I think
it’s exactly what you said, Jamie. I think there’s parity.
Finally. I think what the NFL
has achieved is an opportunity for everybody to get into the
playoffs, and we’re really
pretty much one third of the season over. And that is kind
of one of those things that
keeps the fans interested. And I know that the NFL is loving
that fact and especially
television as well. So the more parity there can be, the better
off the league is going to be
in terms of their ratings. Coach. Coach, I’m going to call
you coach, even though you’re a
GM now, are we going to see a renaissance of the handshake
between you and Belichick
tonight? Like we have the NFL version of this photograph.
Will there be the still image
of it tonight before the game. Absolutely. If I get an
opportunity to go over and
spend a little time with coach I will you know, somebody I
admired, somebody I respected
and somebody that I really looked up to as when I was a
young coach as to, you know,
how to do things. And every time we used to play them, I
used to tell my team, this is a
great measuring stick. You want to see what a championship
caliber football team looks
like? It’s them. So let’s find out just exactly where we
measure up. Coach. You know,
speaking about Coach Belichick, I know you guys coach against
each other for so many years.
Do you have a favorite story about coach coach Bill. You
know it’s one of those things
that he and I had a very professional and cordial
relationship. And so whenever
he and I got together there was a lot of respect, a lot of
mutual respect. But what was
really cool and he didn’t have to do it. But when I got let go
right in the middle of the
season, when my last year in Carolina in 2019, he was one of
the first guys to call him. In
fact, him and Andy Reid were two of the coaches that called
me almost immediately. And it
was really, really kind of cool that they did that and they
didn’t have to, but they both
said some really kind words, and I really appreciated that.
That’s classy, coach, I can
tell and I know that’s something that you would do for
someone else. Coach, let’s end
with this. Is there a coach right now that you look at in
the league a head coach, and
maybe it’s one of the younger ones. Maybe it’s an up and
comer who you just look at and
say, I think that guy’s going places. And I have respect for
how he handles himself. Who do
you like? Do you know Leon Comb at Jacksonville? I interviewed
with him last year for the
assistant head coaching job that he had. And what happened
was, you know, it came down
between them and Cal and I had to go home. But when I
interviewed with Liam and he
and I had this great conversation about, you know,
how to run a team, how to put
things together. And I got a chance to listen to his
offensive philosophy a little
bit. That’s a guy I really think is going to go places. I
really do the thing. Also, the
big plus, he’s got a young quarterback still that he’s
developing. He’s teaching. He’s
and you really see it in Trevor’s play, because I think
that’s the kind of guy that
really has a chance to to connect with players, I really
do. I really liked it and I
think this guy’s got a chance to go places, Kyle, I really do.
You can leave Cal, but you
can’t make Cal leave the heart of Ron Rivera. He is now the GM,
but we know him as coach and we
always love to have him at the breakfast table. Ron Rivera,
good luck tonight to the Cal
Bears. We look forward to another renaissance of coaching
tonight. Appreciate it. Thanks
guys. Good to see you Coach Ron. You got it. Hey, mom. Sam is
taking the tide boosted test.

Riverboat Ron!!!
I get it joke. But did brees and brady ever play both over 40.
I went into a winery above Napa Valley maybe 10 years ago. Tricky to get to as there’s s one-mile private road to the top. Anyways the guy who worked there said that Joe Flacco had just been there wine tasting. Anyways he said that Joe is a really nice guy which isn’t surprising really as he comes across that way during interviews. But Flacco has been good for football although it looks like he’s not finished yet.
This gets me up in the morning
One thing that’s interesting: Joe Flacco has always had a very good arm but you can tell, he really takes heat off it now. A lot of his passes are thrown only as hard as he has to. I’d imagine it makes for a more catchable ball.
