Matthew Schaefer is Special

  1. Lou woulda had him peeling potatoes in an army base kitchen for a full enlistment term to build character.

  2. I know it’s early but I’m starting to think this kid may be better than advertised.

  3. I assume these numbers/rankings are comparing him to all NHL defensemen? I love that zone denial rate percentage/ranking. It shows his defensive prowess and suggests he’s more than a defenseman who can move the puck and accumulate points.

  4. We were desperately missing those zone exits the last few seasons

We are also noticeably better on zone entries, mostly as a result of having legitimately fast skaters now. Barzal isn’t doing it all on his own

  5. against the oilers he really showed his ability to stand the blue line. he isnt just an offensive Dman but one that is showing really good defense on top. hes a special kid and with proper support is going to be a legend.

  6. For someone who doesn’t get these fancy stats…zone denial is? Preventing players from entering the zone with the puck?

  7. Now imagine how good he’d be if he played the whole season last year. The fact that he’s this good already after losing 75 percent of his season is crazy.

  8. Always noticing him in offensive zone and never in the defensive zone. Meaning doing all of the right things on both ends of the ice

  9. I was pretty adamant on this sub that a young 18-year-old shouldn’t be accelerated into the league. Maybe let him have his 9 games, but then send him back to the OHL no matter how good he is, because an 18-year-old is not going to be able to keep up.
I was wrong. Doesn’t mean he’s not going to make some rookie mistakes, but he totally looks like he belongs. The biggest thing for me is when he does make a mistake, he doesn’t try to over-correct, and he doesn’t lose faith in his abilities. He comes out and has a good shift.
My biggest gripe about Dobson, was that mistakes would escalate. You could see him thinking too much.
