Dude, this rumor made my hair stand on end. I haven't even been able to get over Shildt's departure and I just saw this circulating.
If you ask me it would be incredible, imagine the machine in the San Diego uniform, it would be amazing, the guy was a beast as a player, plus he already has experience as a manager in the Dominican Republic and his team was a winner, even though it was his first year as manager. I think with effort and dedication, someone like that could be very good here.

  1. Great guy but I’d rather have someone with experience. Doesn’t make sense at all

Edit: some people are missing the point that he has zero managerial experience. Another person wanted to bring race into it. Being a former player that’s fine. But we need experience not a test run

  2. I think we need to try something very different than what we’ve been doing. I liked BoMel and Schildt, but there’s something that isn’t clicking completely with the stars. It may just be them, who knows, but if anyone can command their respect and unlock their full potential in the regular season and postseason, it’s Albert. To me, there’s not much of a downside, provided that he keeps Niebla and hires great coaches around him.

  3. I like the pick but idk it’s hard to pick managers since we don’t see that part of the game as much. But need someone who uses numbers to back up at least some decisions and values slug. Would be nice to have an extra set of offensive eyes though

  4. I might be in the minority here but would love to see Yadier get the gig or Albert. Both successful players that would be respected by the current team. Gonna be a long off-season.

  5. It’s crazy to think that the Padres have had four managers in the past ten years and not a single one of them was a successful player. Two of them never even played in the majors. Given how much Manny talks about posting and pumps, might as well give it a shot and Pujols is going straight to the top.

  6. Oh shit it’s about to star uh? Every player that ever live and currently coaching is going to be “rumor” It’s all speculation and i trust AJ to make a good decision. Also, can we let go of Bochy?

  7. I would be excited if Albert Pujols managed the Padres.

Mike Schildt never played in the majors or the minors. I wonder if he felt insecure about that, and that made him feel as if he had to be very controlling of the coaches, while allowing the players to police themselves. Perhaps Schidt was insecure about not playing professionally so did not want to confront players or take advice from the coaches who did play professionally.

Albert Pujols is a legendary player who would not feel insecure about anything. If a player like Manny Machado needs to gt serious, I can definitely see Pujols being better at getting that message across than Mike Schildt.

  8. Outside of how everyone feels I do believe the only place he will coach is the angels since he has a 10 year post playing contract with the Angels. Feel like that’s gunna factor pretty hard into the Angels will have him coach there.

  9. No. Just no. Need someone with major league (or extensive minor league) coaching experience. Nothing but respect for the guy, but you don’t just sign a great player to manage because he was a great player. Just look at Wayne Gretzky as an NHL coach. Not saying Pujols couldn’t do it, but I don’t want to be the team to take the risk to find out.

  10. I don’t think appointing a rookie manager, with little coaching experience, is a good idea.

  11. Just give the keys to Ruben and watch the sparks fly. This guy can take us to new heights. Pujols will give us more of the Same I think.

  12. it’s not a bad move if the idea is having a guy run by analytics and you just need a coach who can command respect. I’d be fine with it. I still like Ruben however. all the pitchers seem to respect him. He’d command the same as head coach.

  13. Definitely a lot of catchers become successful managers. I like the Yadier idea that someone else expressed. Another option is a guy like Robinson Chirinos for the Orioles. Everyone is hoping he’ll stay on with the new staff at Baltimore and he’s getting a manager look. Great guy, great attitude. My wife worked with him extensively a few years back. Again, former catcher….

I don’t think prior MLB manager positions is a requirement. Look at Stephen Vogt and the Guardians. Another former catcher that everyone loves and just has the intangibles that get people excited to play for him.

  14. I thought Albert was headed to Anaheim! He certainly brings a fire in his heart and knowledge of the game.

  15. I’m all for someone new, even an untested guy like Pujols. I don’t want a re-tread. I like the idea of guys like Pujols, Yadi, and Darvish.

But as a fan, I’ve no idea of their actual qualifications, and I trust AJ to get it right.

I only hope it happens soon so they can get any new staff in place before free agency.

  16. Great ball player doesn’t mean good manager. It’s often the guys that didn’t have the talent to succeed as a player that become great managers.

  17. I guess he can mentor Machado, xander and Tatis about how to deliver 0 for a massive contract

  18. If he wants to be here and management thinks he’s the best option I’ll keep an open mind. But elite play does not guarantee elite management. There aren’t many examples of HOF players becoming successful managers, and the few times it has happened in the last 25 years it didn’t turn out very well.

  19. babysitting manny machado doesn’t work. it’s time to get his personal hero to slap him across the face with his world series rings and see if it gets him to return to form.
