It is WSJS News Stalk Sports for the Triad where our show is going to be in Greensboro tonight for the Charlotte Hornets regular season dress rehearsal against the Memphis Grizzlies. There’s nothing quite like watching basketball in the Coliseum. So, we’re looking forward to it. But before we get into the hoops, let’s hit on another game that we’re looking forward to. This weekend in the ACC, Louisville will visit Miami in prime time. That is a Friday night game. And we’re going to see a rematch of last year’s championship between Clemson and SMU. However, neither of those games are the game of the week in the league. No, that is number 12 Georgia Tech visiting Duke Saturday at noon. Wawis Wade Stadium. This is the game of the week because these are two of the three teams with 3-0 conference records currently. There are three of them. Virginia is the third. If we are to assume that Miami is going to be in Charlotte, considering they are one of the two best teams in all of college football right now, then one of those three teams, Duke, CL, uh Duke, Virginia, or Georgia Tech, probably will be facing the Miami Hurricanes for an ACC title. could be in the conversation for a college football playoff bid since Virginia is hosting Washington State this weekend. That’s a non-conference game. Obviously, the winner in Durham is going to be the only team to be a perfect 4-0 to start league play to this point. So, whoever wins this weekend will be in first place in the ACC standings just as we draw it up, drew it all up back in July. Georgia Tech Duke this Saturday at noon. It’s also a matchup perhaps between the the nation’s two most underrated quarterbacks. Daren Mensah certainly isn’t underpaid, but he is underrated. Do you ever hear people mention him as one of the best quarterbacks in this conference? Not really. You look at Carson Beck first, who right now is up there in terms of the Heisman currently is the front runner to win the Heisman Trophy. But what if I told you Dar Mensah is just 20 or 30 yards off of having the most passing yards in the ACC and the only guy in ahead of him is CJ Bailey from NC State who’s played one more game than Darien has. So Darien Mena is essentially the passing leader in the ACC. He also is tied for the most touchdown passes in the conference. So in terms of being prolific, no quarterback statistically has been more prolific in the ACC than Darius Mensah has at Duke. Haynes King, meanwhile, might be the most valuable player in all of college football. the one player that if you take him off his squad, it’s difficult to imagine how his team replaces him. Haynes King, the quarterback at Georgia Tech, is top five in the ACC in rushing. Not among quarterbacks in all of the ACC. Haynes King top five of the ACC in rushing. He has nine touchdown runs nine times. And that doesn’t even account for what he does when he throws the ball already at about 1,000 yards. Saturday’s winning quarterback, especially if it’s Haynes King, should be discussed as a Heisman candidate. The reason they might not be discussed in that context is because of the decal or the logo that’s on the side of the helmet. Haynes King, it reminds me a lot of Sam when he was at Wake Forest four years ago. This is one of the reasons why we want to bring Dave Clawson on. Dave Clawson going to be our guest at 5:30 today because Sam Hartman had Wake Forest top 10 in the country. He was the most valuable quarterback, most valuable player in all of college football, but nobody was talking about him in the context of the Heisman. Top 10 team at Wake Forest. If Georgia Tech wins this game, you’re probably a top 10 team at Georgia Tech. How did they get there? Hannes King. Hannes King deserves that type of recognition. But it is the Blue Devils that have the most control over their destiny. Because between Virginia, Georgia Tech, Duke, Duke faces both Georgia Tech and Virginia the rest of the way. Georgia Tech and Virginia don’t play each other. This is what happens when the league expands to 18. The schedules become all that more important. So for Duke, you have the opportunity. You have control. You’re in the driver’s seat. Not only do you have a perfect 3-0 record, you have the other two teams with 3 and 0 records visiting your stadium, Virginia going to Wallace Wade a few weeks after Georgia Tech is. So, if you take care of these two games, in all likelihood, you’re talking about the Blue Devils being in the ACC championship. And it’s worth noting that Duke, this is going to be a spotlight game on a national televised basis. ESPN at noon. The Blue Devils are favored in this game against the number 12 ranked team in the country. The last time Georgia Tech visited the state of North Carolina, probably should have lost in Winston Salem. A week before, a week out from the regular season opener. This is the last preseason game. Do you have anything else in the tank or is it just that Eric Collins piece? Oh, I have plenty in the tank. I I I mean, heck, I can even go football if you want me to go football. I can I I have a wide variety of Eric Collins. Whatever you play for me, I certainly won’t turn it down. Oh, yeah. Did I stall long enough for you or No, you just had the one button deluxe, right? Just looking at you struggling over there a little bit. didn’t know what exactly you were looking at. Exciting stuff. Really is. Even if it’s just preeason, it is a big deal that the Charlotte Hornets are playing in Greensboro. And the main event tonight is Charlotte’s guards. Obviously, the two biggest stars on the team are in the back court. Oh, no. Disaster. If you’re a basketball fan or if you’re just taking your kid to watch basketball tonight, who are you wanting to see? Who are they wanting to see? LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller. That’s who they want to watch. Both players are coming off injuries last year. So, there are questions surrounding both guys. More questions with LaMelo because there’s some uncertainty about LaMelo’s future, long-term future with Charlotte, Brandon Miller. Can he take that step from being really good to potentially being an all-star? Those are things that we’ll be watching relative to those two. Tonight is again a regular season rehearsal. We do not know who the third starting guard is going to be. Now, there’s still some question who the starting center will be. Looks like it’s going to be Musa Diabate with Mason Plumbley and Ryan Cochrinter coming off the bench. Ryan caught Briner being an older freshman 23 years old out of Kraton. Busousa Diabate was a great story last year. Smaller small ball small ball center but still a center nonetheless. You feel pretty good about him at that spot. You got LaMelo, you got Brandon Miller, you got Miles Bridges that’s in your starting lineup. So that leaves one more spot. And in Charlotte’s first three preseason games, they’ve started three different players there. In the opener, it was Khan Canipple. In the second game, it was Trey Man. Saturday against Dallas, it was Colin Saxton. Now, it’s not going to be Trey Man. He has a role in this team and he’s pretty good at it. He’s the backup point guard. He’s the guy you bring in when LaMelo Ball is out of the game. So, will it be Kadipple or will it be Colin Ston? Ston is a veteran who probably is a better player right now than Kanipple is, but Charlotte’s not in a position where they’re trying to win right now. Conanipple is the future. He’s a top five pick. You really like him and he did a lot in the summer league. He’s done a lot in the preseason so far. So, who Charlotte starts in that spot could be telling. and Will. That’s what five guards that we’ve mentioned. Canipple Ston or that’s four. No, wait. Trey man, LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller. That’s five guards. Is that even half of the group? Did you mention Spencer Denwy? Oh, we’re going to get there, bud. Okay. Cuz when you look at the whole group of guards, there are five or six more beyond the five that I just mentioned that you might recognize. It’s a veteran like Spencer Denwitty. It’s young players like Liam McNeely, the rookie out of Yukon. The secondyear player KJ Simpson. Josh Green who started many of the games last year. How about Pat Coneton who gets to play in the Coliseum for the first time in 10 years. When he was I was there that night carving up North Carolina in the ACC championship game as a member of Notre Dame. Those green uniforms they wore. We’ll see what color uniform Charlotte’s wearing tonight. Hornets, Grizzlies, and Greensbury later tonight. And we’re excited to be there for it. We got weekly positivity today. It would pit the two best players in the sport against each other. It’s Shi Otani against Cal Raleigh. And that’s fun because Showi Otani is this global superstar for LA. Cal Raleigh is this budding star, the best player in the American League that it’s been the year of Cal Raleigh. Cal Raleigh in the home run derby. Cal Raleigh, you know, 60 home runs. Cal Raleigh with all the history. Cal Raleigh in the World Series. Cal Raleigh winning it all. That’d be great for the North Carolina native from Koi, North Carolina, ACC legend with the Florida State. It also could be a matchup of the two best starting pitching staffs in Major League Baseball. And it’s not just Seattle that would have an opportunity to make some history. The Dodgers could make some history, too. It has been 25 years since a team has gone backto back. Since a team has been a repeat champion in baseball, your Yankees won three in a row. 98, 99, 2000. 25 years since we’ve seen a repeat champion. The Dodgers can do that. Other than the Dodger fans out there, though, other than them, nobody’s going to be rooting for LA, right? Other than Dodger fans, is anybody going to watch a Dodger Seattle World Series and root against Seattle? I’d like to see a repeat over Seattle winning for the first time ever. Maybe. I haven’t decided yet. Why? What would you have against Seattle? I don’t know. Sincerely, I don’t know who I’m going to pull for in this spot. You You’d have to be sick in the head to not root. But it’s us against the law, baby. and and and going back to last week, you know, you know, like I said, people take uh a lot of pleasure out of you getting wrong. They don’t credit you when you get right, which is often. That’s true. But the HHL told you that we were going to get past this. I heard I heard you were right. You were right. I I I I love the way I mean, I know people talk about the spending the money and all that, and we do. We got a big market. we spend the money, but you know, teams such as Atlanta and and other big market teams, they could spend more than they do, and they don’t, but Oh, I didn’t mention a thing. Oh, I I don’t think that’s the reason people like dislike the Dodgers. I just think it’s the fact that the Dodgers have won a ton. I mean, the Mets have spent more money than pretty much anybody else as well. If the Mets were in the World Series, there’d be a lot of people rooting for the Mets just because they haven’t won since 1986. Yeah. I I just I mean, I think that this organization I think they they they they nailed it. They they do it right. And we’ve got everything set up. It’s a it’s a murderer’s road from bat one to bat nine. And then our starting pitching has been absolutely phenomenal. Yeah. The only way that I think you can get to the Dodgers is for one of our starters to have a bad outing and you get to the bullpen. You do that, then you you definitely got a chance. But my let let me say this too. My son who is in the Air Force, he just literally moved to Tacoma, Washington. He’s been there for like three days. He told me yesterday, he said, “I’m telling you, Pop, if the Mariners and the Dodgers play in the World Series, I don’t care how much that ticket is, I’m going.” And I say, “Amen.” Amen. And amen. So, hey, we got a long ways to go. This this series, I’m not I’m I’m I’m not taking it for granted. Milwaukeekey’s a great team. They had the best record. We got to finish it out. So, it’s not over. And then and then beyond that, you got to get past the World Series. Bill Bill writes in, “I think I think we figured it out. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this.” Bill Bill, the reason WD doesn’t want Seattle is because Judge is the MVP in his mind. That’s it. This you’re clearly you’re clearly holding the re that there’s no other reason why you would not like Seattle because you don’t like the assertion that Aaron Judge isn’t the best player in the American League. Remember, Will, when we thought in the summer, oh, this is going to be an epic quarterback group. This happens all the time. Anytime the draft gets near, people look ahead to next year’s class before you’ve broken down these players to a pulp and say, “Oh, this class is going to be so much better than the one we’re looking at right now.” And it happened with this quarterback draft class. They were looking at some of the guys taking and thinking, “Oh, buddy, just wait until next year.” Who were the guys going into the season? This was the top four on Mel Kyper’s board. Arch Manning, Cade Clubnick, Garrett Nusmeer, Drew Aller. Those were the top four guys. Do you know how many of those players are included in the top six of Mel Kyper’s current quarterback list? The answer is zero. It’s only been a month and a half. Oh yeah, these guys all first round draft picks. A month and a half later, not even in the top five, top six of the quarterback list. So here’s your new top three. Number one, the number one prospect on Mel Kyper’s board, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. Yes, the former UCLA quarterback who we’ve only seen playing at Oregon for five games. He’s the number one prospect in all of college football. Congratulations, Dante Moore. Second, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, friend of the show. And lastly, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Those are the top three QBs on the board. Here’s a question. If you’re a Jet fan, who are you salivating over? Who are you thinking, “Man, can’t wait to take this guy in the draft. He’s going to change things.” None of these guys, right? None of these guys you circle and say, “Oh, for sure this is a franchise guy.” Maybe Lenor Sers can bounce back and jump up the list a little bit more or John Matier at Oklahoma, but starting to look like Matier might come back for another year. In terms of players who It’s nuts. Arch Manning not even in the top 12 of this list. Kade Clubnick not even in the top 12 of the quarterbacks on this list. So, what do you think, Will, about this quarterback class? It was very much uh unex Well, it was kind It’s kind of unexpected. I thought maybe uh Yeah, I thought maybe Carson Beck would be a little bit higher on this. Yeah, there are two incredible talents in this draft class coming up, but these are guys we could have identified in August. Jeremiah Love, who’s the running back at Notre Dame. He will be a top five pick. He’s really good. And then the best player in all of college football, and we’ve known this guy’s been the best player of all college football for a while now. He won’t be drafted number one or number two overall, but he should, is Josh D’s older brother, Ohio State safety Caleb DS. He’s the best player in college football. He just is. Take that guy number one. Take that guy number two. You got a great player who’s going to be a great player for a very long time. Yeah, you play safety, but just take a great player. That’s who Caleb DS is. So, that’s an early look at the draft class. Will Dalton, how does it feel to be talking about the draft, but not in the context of the Panthers in mid-occtober? Remember three weeks ago when we were saying if they lose this game to the Atlanta Falcons, we’re going to be or if they lose this game to the Miami Dolphins, we’re going to be We talked about it at halftime of that game when they were trailing Miami. We were saying, man, it really sucks that we’re going to be talking about mock drafts. Not anymore. Yeah. Not with these quarterbacks. Yeah, that makes me very happy. Um, you know, I because I would not feel I mean, I don’t know. Carson Beck might be able to do a little I don’t know what he’s going to look like at the pro level, but I feel a lot better with Bryce Young’s development than Oh, we got a draft. No. No shade. Fernando Mendoza. We got to draft Carson Beck. Pretty shady. That was pretty shady. No, no shade. I just like Bryce Young better. Getting to tonight, there is a strong Duke flavor with the Hornets preseason visit to Greensboro. Obviously, the Hornets drafted two Duke Blue Devils in June. Kipple was taken fourth overall. Seion James was taken in round two of the draft. Khan could immediately start. He might start in Charlotte’s opener a week from tonight. Seion, this might be a guy we get to know a little bit get to know a little bit more in Greensboro. Maybe a member of the Greensboro Swarm trying to help them get to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Happy 10year anniversary to the Greensboro Swarm. Mason Plumbley. is going to return to the Coliseum tonight. He won not one but two ACC tournament titles in the Greensboro Coliseum. So, it’s all good memories for Mason Plumbley, right? He was also on the 2012 team that lost to Lehi in that 215 game. So, there were some positives, some very high highs for Mason Plumbley. There was a pretty low low in losing to CJ McCollum’s Lehi team in 2012. Uh, and then Blue Devil legend Cedric Coward plays for Memphis. You remember Cedric Coward? Duke legend. Part of the brotherhood. It is fair to wonder what if when you w if we’re going to get a good look at Cedric Coward tonight. If you don’t know who Cedric Coward is, he committed to Duke as a transfer from Washington State, I think, and had such a good combine he kept his name in the draft. And for good reason, he was taken in the lottery. either in the lottery or right outside the lottery. It was in the teens. So Cedric Coward, a highly drafted player. And if you’re in the coliseum tonight watching, you might think, “Oh, this probably is an upgrade over Domar.” All due respect, could you imagine that if Duke had a lottery pick first round guy in the lineup addition to Cam Boozer, Isaiah Evans, and all they also have back with Caleb Foster and Malik Brown and Pad Gamba? Oh my goodness. Is John Shy going to make an appearance tonight? I say yes. I hope so. It’s like you’ve got wait a minute I my my season hasn’t started yet and I only have to drive an hour to go see Khan and my former teammate Mason Plumbley. That’s right. Like there are a lot of really good players in the league right now. He is. But you have aged Steph a little bit more than what he actually is. He’s still top. Well, and when the show starts right at 11, they call four contestants down. And these is like this is like the A team, right? And then the next day, JG, uh, that was filmed on a Thursday. Friday morning, we’re going to the gym, my brother’s gym, or I guess it’s Arnold Schwarzenegger’s gym. We go work out that Friday morning and as we’re walking in, my little brother who lives there in Venice Beach tells me, “Yeah, Arnold works out here pretty much every morning.” And I kid you not, we we go in at 9:00 at 9:05. Mr. Schwarzenegger is making an appearance in the gym right there. And I get to meet him and shake his hand. I mean, I don’t get to talk to him, but it’s one of the What was he wearing? What was What was Arnold wearing? I’ll send you a picture. He’s an all black and his bodyguards are in all black. That’s That’s outstanding. It’s How intimidating is he up close? He He was He was It was a little intimid. It’s one of the biggest stars I’ve ever met. And just to walk up and shake his head, you know, and he’s got bodyguards and security all around him. And before he walks in the the the gym doors, the two bodyguards come in and in all black and they kind of scan the the gym and my little brother’s like, “Arnold’s about to walk in.” And then 10 seconds later, here comes Mr. Schwarzenegger into the gym. And it was just pretty cool. I love that. So, are you on a machine when this happens? Are you trying? Was Arnold impressed? We’re We’re on a bench press. I think I’m throwing around like 185 or you know I I think I didn’t like as we’re walking to the gym my my brother’s telling me you know Arnold works out here. I’m thinking yeah right whatever and then within 10 minutes you know he makes his appearance. It’s WSJS News Sports with the Triad where we’re going to be in Greensboro tonight for the Hornets regular season dress rehearsal. The Hornets facing the Memphis Grizzlies. There’s nothing quite like watching basketball in the Coliseum. So, we’re looking forward to that. But before we dig into the hoops, let’s hit on another game we’re looking forward to this weekend in the ACC. Louisville is going to visit Miami. That’s a prime time game. Friday night, we’ll see a rematch of last year’s ACC championship between Clemson, LS or Clemson, and SMU. But neither of those games are the game of the week in the league, though. No, that is number 12 Georgia Tech going to Duke Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday at noon. It’s the game of the week because these are two of the three teams with perfect 3 and 0 conference records right now. Miami has only played one conference game somehow. SMU is perfect, too, but only three teams in the league are 3-0 in league play. Duke, Georgia Tech, and the Virginia Cavaliers. If we’re to assume that Miami is going to make it to Charlotte, considering they are one of the two, maybe three best teams in all of college football, one of these three teams likely to face them in the ACC title game. Since Virginia is hosting Washington State over the weekend, the winner of this game in Durham is going to be alone at top the league standings next week. 4-0 in league play. Is it going to be the Jackets or is it going to be the Blue Devils? It’s also a matchup between perhaps the two most underrated quarterbacks in all of college football. Darien Mensah at Duke, while not underpaid, not being talked about enough for how prolific he’s been. He’s the leader in the conference in passing yards. He’s the leader in passing touchdowns. Hannes King might be the most impactful player in college football this season. He might be the most valuable player in college football. He is fifth in the conference in rushing yards. Not among quarterbacks. Fifth in the conference in rushing at quarterback. Has nine touchdown runs. And that doesn’t even account for what he does through the air. If Georgia Tech beats Duke this weekend, Haynes King should be in the Heisman discussion. The fact that he’s not being brought up in that regard reminds us around here a lot of what happened with Wake Forest four years ago. The Deaks were top 10 in the country. Sam Hartman was the most valuable player you could argue in the sport. Nobody was bringing him up in the national Heisman discussions, but Haynes King, if he wins this weekend, Georgia Tech probably a top 10 team. And who is the runaway Heisman favorite right now? Right now, the best odds, Carson Beck, Fernando Mendoza, and Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. That’s the list. And if that’s the list, Haynes King belongs in that discussion. Dave Clawson probably has memories of Sam Hartman not getting a lot of love. Coach Clawson’s going to join us at 5:30. Look forward to catching up with him. We’ll bring up this subject. We’ll bring up this matchup. The Blue Devils, they have control of their destiny or the most control over it. With expanded schedules or expanded league standings, 18 teams in the conference, your schedule isn’t they’re not round robbins. They can’t be. So, who you face is very important. The schedule, the conference schedule you uh receive has never been more important than it is in 2025. The Blue Devils, they face both Georgia Tech and Virginia. And those games are both at Wallace Wade Stadium. Georgia Tech doesn’t play Virginia, though, so they don’t nearly have that level of control. And again, these games are in Durham. And it’s worth noting Duke’s favored against the Jackets right now. It’s a spotlight game, ESPN noon kick game of the week in the ACC. Both players are coming off injuries, a lot of question marks surrounding those guys. Very important seasons. LaMelo’s se uh future looks a little it’s murky. It’s a little we we don’t quite know what it’s going to be. Brandon, can he take that step from being a really good player to potentially being an all-star? That’s a question that is being considered in his year three. Get in there. Tonight is the regular season dress rehearsal. We do not know heading into the season who the third guard in Charlotte’s lineup is going to be. They’re starting five. We have a good idea for who the rest of the starters are. Obviously LaMelo and Brandon Miller and obviously Miles Bridges. Musa Diabate looks like he’s going to be the starting center with Mason Plumbley and rookie Ryan Caulk Briner coming off the bench. He’s an older rookie, 23 years old out of Kraton, a second round pick who’s been the story of camp. Seven of seven from the field in the preseason game against Dallas on Saturday. But in terms of who that last guard is, Dow doesn’t play for the Charlotte Hornets. Uh three preseason games, they’ve had three different starters at that spot. Coniple, Trey Man, Colin Ston. It’s not going to be Trey man because he has an established role. He’s the backup point guard. He comes in when LaMelo Ball comes out. You need that type of guy. You need maybe a change of pace point guard and he is really good in that role. So, is it going to be Coniple or is it going to be Colin Ston? Ston is a more proven veteran player. Khan Canipple is your top five pick. Fourth overall that you’re excited about who was good in summer league been good in preseason so far. Should it Ston’s probably the better player between the two. Kadipple is probably going to be the starter on opening night. So, we’ll see what that lineup looks like tonight for Charles Lee. Looking at the whole group of guards like so far we’ve mentioned five names. Canipple Ston LaMelo Miller Trey Man not on this roster. Rico Dowel will there’s still five or six guys beyond those five we haven’t mentioned. Young guys like Liam McNeely and KJ Simpson. Veterans like Spencer Denwitty, Josh Green. How about your boy Pat Coneton? And don’t look at him. Pat Conetan will Yeah, he has returning to Greensboro. So now you’re eliminated. Just like most of the people in this survivor pool that I’m in, 25 of 118 are left standing. I’m one of those 25. This week’s pick right now in best bets. I’m not a betting duck. Care to make it interesting? You know you do. You’re on. Call me in on this. Your best bet. But my money’s on the other team. This is Josh’s best bets. I think my dad’s stealing my picks. Is that right? He’s one of the 25 left standing, too. And Will, after week one, he has had the same five picks as I have the last five picks. Last week, he texted me, “Who you taking on Tuesday?” He hasn’t sent that text yet, but now I told him last week, “No, it’s starting to get competitive.” However, here’s the problem with this approach and thinking. This is a program that anybody can listen to. Thus, he could be listening right now and just take the same pick that I’ve selected thus far. So, here are the six teams I’ve taken. Will, last week it was the Green Bay Packers against Cincinnati. I’ve also taken Philadelphia, Baltimore, Tampa, Buffalo, and Detroit. So, I can’t use any of those teams. Here are the three that I looked at, circled, and considered for my week seven survivor pool pick. Starting with the New England Patriots at the Tennessee Titans. The Patriots look like a playoff team right now. Drake May looks like an MVP candidate. Tennessee, what’s the word that Cam Ward used to describe that club? Ass. It’s what he said. They just fired their coach. The Patriots are at the Titans and it’s a seven-point spread. I’m not taking the New England Patriots. As Jackson Dart taught us, the first game, things generally go well, especially when you’re at home when there’s a change. The Titans, everybody’s down on them right now. The Patriots are on the road. A young quarterback. If I’m going to go down, Will, I’m not going to go down taking Drake May when there are better options. available. Second team I considered the Denver Broncos facing whom? Your New York Giants. I’m not taking Denver for two reasons. Number one, the Broncos are coming off a London trip. Yep. So that’s not a great turnaround. Number two, the Giants have had extended time to prepare for this game. So that is a preparation disparity that is going to scare us off from taking Denver in this spot. Which brings us to the game I actually am taking. The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting the Vegas Raiders. It’s in Arrowhead. There isn’t a team in the NFL that looks better than Kansas City has the last well certainly this past Sunday, few weeks now. Last couple weeks. Yeah. Sunday Night Football and then the game before that. Yeah. So, Kansas City is our selection for this week. Vegas beat Tennessee. Now they’re going to Arrowhead. If I’m going to lose, Will, it’s with Patrick Mahomes. at home that I’m going to go down, but I don’t think I am against the Raiders. What do you think? Am I making the right choice with Kansas City at home against the Raiders versus the Patriots in Tennessee or the Broncos at home against the Giants? I mean, listen, you very easily could have gone New England. There’s definitely a strong case for that. the Giants and the Broncos. That’s a little scarier, but I think you’re making the right choice. Yeah, because there are some other ones that feature teams that I’ve already taken. Can’t take, you know, the Packers again. The Packers are playing Arizona, but even though that game’s on the road at Arizona, there are teams you just can’t take. That’s how this works now at this point. So, there you go. not taking the Carolina Panthers at the Jets. That sounds like something Will Dalton would do. No. In week seven, yeah, Carolina’s just gonna win the game. Not taking any quarterback in the 41-year-old bowl. Steelers, Bengals. Did you see what they called that? The Icy Hot Bowl rather than the Ice Bowl. The Icy Hot Bowl. Yeah. Scott writes in, “What about the Seattle Seahawks?” Houston Monday night at home. Oh, never mind. That’s next week, I think. No, no, no. That is this week. No, that’s the 20th. That’s next week. Now, if you are a college basketball nerd, or as some would call it in 2025, a college basketball sicko, the Grizz does have some doozies. There are two local legends, Will, that never played a minute at either of those local schools. Cedric Coward, who committed to Duke from Washington State, kept his name in the draft, and was taken in the lottery. And how about North Carolina Tarheel legend Gigi Jackson? GG, what’s up? We finally get to see Gigi play in the Coliseum, you guys. We always knew it would happen. I remember sitting next to GI Jackson. It was me and in the chair directly he had the window seat. I sat next to GI Jackson on the way back from the final four in 2022. Oh, did you know that on the way back from uh this is something that just didn’t come up because we had quite a bit to talk about after that game. G you think after coach Kay’s last game against North Carolina in the final four on the plane ride back GI Jackson sitting in the seat next to me and I made a mistake. What’ you do? Duke was he was considering Duke and he was telling me, “Yeah, man. Nolan Smith has been so good to me.” And I said to him, “Oh, no one’s leaving Duke.” Because Nolan told me that the night before and he was about to tell John Shy he was leaving to join Kenny Payne at Louisville. Gigi didn’t know that yet. Wow. Sorry. So, you might be the reason that Gigi didn’t show up to Duke. Maybe it’s possible. Still haven’t told John Shire that. I might keep it to yourself. Speaking of last night, we’re halfway to a Mariners Dodgers World Series. It’s not just that those two teams are up two games to zero in their respective championship series. It’s that both teams have won the first two games on the road. You know the saying, well, it’s not a series until a team wins on the road, right? Well, how about when a team wins twice on the road at this point? Not great for the Brewers. Not great for the Blue Jays. Obviously, the Blue Jays need to figure out a way to win today. There’s only one team in history that’s fallen behind or jumped up three games to nothing and didn’t end up winning the series. Who is that? Number three, that would be the 2004 New York Yankees, of course. Uh Mariners, Dodgers. That would be a perfect World Series. You with me on this, right? It’d be a good one. It would be. It’s a West Coast World Series. I know TV execs probably wouldn’t like it. Oh, we want to have an East Coast team play a West Coast team and oh, we, you know, Seattle’s not a big market. But I I don’t care what the suits think. I What I care about is Cal Raleigh has been the story in Major League Baseball this year. Cal Raleigh is your AL MVP and the Mariners have never won a World Series before or even been to the World Series before and it’s the ultimate David and Goliath type of matchup. We haven’t seen a repeat champion in baseball in 25 years. So, a lot of history at stake if those teams were to meet in the World Series, and I hope that we see it. Number three, it’s not just baseball that we have tonight. Good luck. By the way, it’s Toronto going into Seattle, which is going to be a snake pit while Kirby is on the mound tonight for the Mariners. There’s also football. Yeah, the Delaware Blue Hands. If you want to do some scouting, Demon Deacon fans, Delaware that’s going to be in Winston Salem next month. Three and two Delaware. They’re going to be on ESPN tonight facing Jacksonville State. Yeah. talking about how they we were late or didn’t show up to team meetings and all that and it just it’s a mess in Miami right now. They’re going to blow it up. I saw somebody say, “How can you expect leadership from a team that has a coach that wears Capri Capri pants on the sideline? Leave Mike McDaniels alone.” Did you put an N on Mike McDaniel? McDaniel. Leave him alone. Uh, and his sneakers and Capri pants. It’s fine. I mean, once you turn 12, you should probably stop wearing Capri pants. They’re fine. Jay Austin writes it, “I stayed up and watched the Canes game last night. Turned out the lights four to one. I part of me wanted to put the media basketball game in Boston as number one on the five things at five, but instead I need to talk about Halloween being right around the corner and let you know, will that in this Spanish town of Teresa or Terrasa, this is in Barcelona or as douchy pretentious people say Bartholona, right? Um I guess Bartholona. Um this town has banned black cat adoptions over fear of Halloween rituals. Oh, you cannot adopt a black cat in this town until after Halloween. Fearful of rituals from October 1st through November 10th. That’s aggressive. You cannot adopt a black cat because, quote, possible risk derived from superstitions, rituals, or irresponsible uses. This is according to an animal welfare service in this town. Why would it have to go through November 10th? Is it one of those things where they celebrate Halloween on a different day or like a Day of the Dead later? Do they celebrate celebrate Halloween on the 31st in Spain? Let’s see here. I I got to do Do you think a simple Google search would help you on that one? Yeah. Uh so yeah, no black cats in Baralona. How do you feel about that? I mean, I I get taking precautions and everything. They um Yeah, if they’re worried that cats are going to be harmed, then yeah, sure. We don’t want anything bad to happen to cats. However, if we think that those cats are still going to be loved, well, this might actually be a bad thing cuz we want cats to be adopted. They celebrate for 3 days in Spain. We want cats to be adopted and cared for. So, if this is a means where people get a cat because it’s close to Halloween, but then they care for that cat after the fact, it might actually be a a bad thing to not allow people to purchase black cats close to the holiday, close to Halloween. So, it’s a three-day deal in Spain. Oh, wow. I’m not a big Halloween person. I want to be a big Halloween person, but it always sneaks up on me given how busy in a sports context the calendar is in October. And I suspect now that I have a child that I will eventually be a Halloween person once again where we’re going to have outfits as a family and that’s exciting. Let’s go to Ben who’s in Kerville. He was a teammate of John Shier on the national championship team in 2010. Won a year later against North Carolina in the championship game in 2011. That was uh the Kyrie Irving team. Nolan Smith was still on the team and Duke rolled. 2012 was the Austin Rivers team that lost to Lehi in Greensboro in a 215 game to CJ McConnell in company. He was on that squad as well. He is, but I think because the Hornets kind of have this youth movement thing going. Uh, and I think Khan works with this starting lineup that includes LaMelo and Brandon Miller and and those guys. I I think he plugs in really well. I think you just rip the band-aid off and get him in there. Rip it off. The Carolina Panthers only have one player on their 53man roster who isn’t practicing today. And I’m thinking, whoa, Carolina’s won two in a row. They’re at 500 for the first time in four years. They’re playing a winless New York Jet team. You got people talking about firing Aaron Glenn. He’s coached six games in New York. Get your seat belt on. Because they’re the freaking New York Jets, Will. Correct. Um, so I was fully ready to say the vibes couldn’t be better than where we’re at with the Carolina Panthers right now. The problem is that one injured player happened to be Pat Jones, who’s an edge rusher, and then Dave Canal shared with the media today that Pat Jones is out for the remainder of the year. Darn it. Again, thought it was going to be so uber positive. Dave Canawas level positive. Thought it was gonna be Whoa. Austin Corbett was a full go at practice today. People were talking about that dude missing months and months maybe not returning this season and he’s a full go at practice. Jaylen Koker’s a full go at practice. This is fabulous. This is great news. And now your best edge rusher at perhaps the softest position on your depth chart is out for the remainder of the year. Carolina has played six games. Six. The number of sacks Carolina has through six games. Five. five sacks in three game or five sacks in six games. No other team in the league is fewer than seven sacks. And I believe that team has had a buy so far this year. Carolina has fewer sacks than games played so far. And you just lost maybe your best edge rusher. That isn’t great. So, the vibes will not awesome. To improve those vibes, let’s go to a video that’s been going viral over the midst of the day. [Music] W SJ [Music] Dave Clawson, Wake Forest coaching legend. Last time we had you on, I gave you that title and people I went to a weight game the next night and they said, “Absolutely right. Thank you for giving him that title. And it must feel weird for you to hear that sentence because you’re not that old Dave. Uh, no I’m not. But uh, let me just first interrupt the show and hijack it for a minute. I just saw David Burn live in concert in New York City and the encore song was Psycho Killer and I think that’s the first time he’s played it live in like 20 years. Somebody told me that. I don’t know if it’s true or not. So I just saw David Burn in concert. It was an incredible show and the last song we played was Psycho Killer. So, um, your your entry to the uh, interview was very appropriate. So, you nailed it, Josh. Good job. I give all the credit to Will D. He’s the one that deserves it for that. Uh, you are doing work with the ACC network uh, now, but I was reminded over the weekend of your farewell press conference a little bit last December. You made a point before you even knew who your successor would be at Wake Forest to extend a courtesy saying be patient with him the way you were patient with me. Give him time. But here we are. Dick Dickert 4 and two. Frankly, it should be top five and one with a top 20 win as Wake Forest turns the corner to the second half of the year. What has impressed you the most watching what Jake has done so far? Well, first of all, Josh, I do think it is a different era now because of the transfer portal. um that that people probably aren’t going to be as patient with coaches um that they once were and uh you know because of NIL and the portal Jake was able to bring in 62 players and I think when you bring in that many more new players it takes time to gel and I think they’re starting to gel. Um you know they are are starting to get a feel for what he wants and what his expectations are and the different schemes and the way they call plays. And I said it on my show the other day in the ACC network. Um I I think they’re probably the most improved team in the league from game one to game six. Um and in the second half of the season, the schedule’s going to get tougher. Uh but you know, they’re certainly capable of getting to a bowl and I think capable of you know, of getting a seventh or an eighth win if they can pull an upset or two here. You remind me of something that Dave Canales talks a lot about with the Panthers. Finding us, finding what that identity is, and he says sometimes it happens a lot later than you want it to be. Sometimes it hits early on. What does that look like behind the scenes between weighing what you see in games and what works versus what you see in practice, evaluating personnel? How do you find an identity behind the scenes? Now, I always thought uh by the end of September, if you haven’t found your identity, you’re probably in trouble. Um, and I think it’s just the nature of college football is you don’t have pre-season games. And so, you you start a season out and you go through spring football and you think, okay, this is where we’re good and this is where we’re deficient. So, how do we take advantage of our best players and um kind of maximize their impact on the game while minimizing uh the areas that you’re weakest, you know? So, if you’re really good in the secondary but not good up front, you know, you may blitz a little bit more and play more man coverage. Or if you have a really good O line, uh you’re not as good at receiver, you know, maybe uh you run the ball a little more. And and and again, that’s basically coaching is assessing your personnel. um maximizing your strengths, limiting your weaknesses. And that was one of the reasons I always preferred to play our four non-conference games in September. That after going through spring football and fall camp, if we were a little bit off of what we thought our strengths were, we had September to figure that out and then hopefully we knew what our identity was as we head into the conference schedule. Um, and I think that’s even more so with the transfer portal and how quickly rosters change over is, you know, a lot of times you don’t even have your whole roster in the spring. And, you know, if you’re think you’re really good in fall camp at receiver, you might not be good that good at receiver. You might just not be very good in the secondary. And when you play other teams, you start figuring that out the hard way. Dave Clawson’s with us here. I would love to get your observations about two teams playing each other this weekend and what appears to be the game of the week in the ACC on ESPN at noon. It’s Georgia Tech 12th in the country visiting Duke. I think there are a lot of assumptions being made about Miami as one of the best teams in the country. So if we’re to assume that Charlotte is in their sights in front of them, likely their opponent’s going to be one of the league’s three 3 and 0 teams between Georgia Tech, Duke, and Virginia. How much separation do you see between those two? And what intrigues you about Georgia Tech, Duke? Well, first of all, right now there’s five undefeated teams in the league. Um, and because of how big the conference is, there’s only three games between those teams. Nuts. You know, Miami is going to play SMU. Uh, Duke and Georgia Tech are going to play, and Duke and Virginia are going to play. Mhm. So Duke is the only team that has more than one game against the undefeated teams. And you know, because nobody really controls their their own destiny because of that. Um, in a lot of ways, this week could be an elimination game that the the whoever doesn’t win this game um now needs help. So again, I should reward that. All the undefeated teams control their destiny. the second you lose one game because of how many undefeated teams there are, you don’t. And uh so this is going to be a great game against two of the I think the best teams in the league. And I think Virginia is going to factor in there. Um obviously SMU is is undefeated as well. Um but SMU has a really really tough schedule down the stretch. Now they have yet to lose an ACC game and if that continues obviously they’ll be in Charlotte as well. But Georgia Tech is a really good team that their quarterback has elevated them into a great team. Again, I think if you had any other quarterback in the country at Georgia Tech right now, they’re still a good team. They’re probably a eight and four, nine and three team. Hannes King elevates that whole football team. um his ability to run the ball, uh his toughness, uh the clutch player he is, his ability to bring him back from behind, his ability to lead a two-minute drill. Uh to me, right now, he he’s the MVP of the league, and I would put Carson back right behind him. Um and Georgia Tech is good everywhere with a special differencemaker quarterback. His impact actually is reminiscent, I think, of the impact that Sam Hartman had on your group in 2021 in terms of how little attention it’s getting. You were right to point out that year, hey, if this guy had another logo on the helmet, we’re talking about this guy being a Heisman contender. It’s crazy. Top five in the ACC regardless of position in rushing. Hannes King, nine touchdowns. And then that you don’t even mention the passing that he’s done too. If he wins this game and Georgia Tech’s a top 10 team in the country, Allah, your team was top 10 in the country a couple of times. We need to start talking about Haynes King in that context, right? Yeah, Josh. But I just think again, you you’re in the media business, right? and you understand this as well as anybody that the barrier to entry to get in that conversation if you’re not at a blueb blood is really hard. Right? So it really in some ways Haynes King doesn’t have to be as good as the Alabama quarterback or the Miami quarterback or the Notre Dame running back. he’s got to be so much better because you don’t start a season with eyes on Georgia Tech. And you know, they’ve risen to this level because of how well they and he have played. Um but it’s just it’s a tough barrier. You know, if you’re at a Wake Forest, out of Georgia Tech, out of Syracuse, um you could have the most impactful player in the country. Um, but it’s just tough because when you put on uh, you know, ESPN for the prime time games, you know, you’re always going to have the Georgia, the Alabama, the Texases, the Penn States, the Ohio States, the Miami, the Florida States, the Clemsons, uh, just because of the the brand equity that those programs have built up over over the past 10, 20, 50, 100 years. And it’s just the way it is. Dave Clawson with us here. One reason we knew that you would be very good at TV being in press conferences with you over the years. You are allergic to being dishonest. Like you you just ooze honest almost to a fault sometimes. And that sometimes got me in a little bit of trouble, Josh. But thank you. which is why I as soon as I saw the Penn State news happen over the weekend, I I’m just fascinated in what you make of this because this is the first time I can remember where the most coveted job opening in the country. You know, just let go of a coach who’s now the most coveted candidate in the country. James Franklin fits in pretty much any job out there and is going to be the hottest name. and Penn State, the place that fired him, is going to be the most coveted job you could make an argument. So, starting on the Penn State end of it, like what kind of resume, what kind of criteria fits for that type of job? Well, I I think that job um you know becomes like an Ohio State or a Notre Dame or a Texas or an Alabama or a Georgia that if you take that job, the expectation is to not go to the national championship or to go to the playoffs, but is to win it. Right? because you just fired a coach that a year ago went 13-3 finished with the highest ranking Penn State has had in decades and three weeks ago was 3 and 0 and had the number three team in the country. Um and and again it’s you know I’m friends with James. Um I visited Penn State uh this August and spent time with his program. Um, but that’s just the way college football is now, you know, and I think now that, you know, players are are being paid and you can build up a roster with the transfer portal, um, that, you know, the five-year plan or four-year plan of building a program no longer exists. And I really think Penn State, and again, I I don’t know everything that goes on in their program. Maybe there’s another reason they did this that we’re not privy to, but I think they said like, okay, two years ago, Michigan went allin, kept all their good players, and won a national championship. And last year, Ohio State did the same thing and won a national championship. And I think that the pre-season uh talk and rhetoric was, okay, now Penn State did that, right? They brought in Jim Nolles from Ohio State. They kept their offensive coordinator. Uh they kept their quarterback. They kept their two tail backs. They kept all their defensive players. It was their turn. This was their year. And when you spend that type of money and create that expectation, um, you know, there people expect results and they expect them now. And, um, so in some ways, you know, that’s just where we are. Um, but again, I think James can be very proud about what he accomplished at Penn State. you know, where the program was when he took it over. Uh, getting through the the scandals and convincing a lot of great players at Penn State was a great place to get an education and play football. Um, you know, I think history will be very kind to to James Franklin and the job he did at Penn State, but that is college football and that’s where, you know, when people talk about the process in building, they don’t want to hear about that anymore. you know, you maybe get at best three years, in some places only two years now to build a program. You understand how small the coaching industry can be. So, you tell me just how respected James Franklin is and if I’m right to think because of his resume that right now he’s going to be the number one name on pretty much any of the top schools considering coaches, right? Yeah, you would think that. The only thing I’d say, Josh, is I don’t think the coach if he wants to coach. I I don’t think the public or fans understand what an emotional investment you make into your football program when you’re at a place for that long. I mean, you know, for 11 years, Wake Forest football was my life. I mean, it was 24/7. That’s what I thought about. And I took vacations and I did stuff with my family, but I was almost always distracted because my mind was always on Wake Forest football and how can we make this better and whether you’re dealing with player issues or recruiting issues or staff issues. And you know, I think in a lot of ways, and again, I’m not that close with James, that, you know, it might be good for him to take a little time off and just get a little bit of an emotional reset, you know, and and this is where people, I think, again, don’t get it. Wow, he’s going to get paid $49 million. We should all be so lucky. Uh when you coach, very few of us got into this to the money. And again, we don’t turn it down. No, I guarantee you James Franklin isn’t happy he’s not coaching the Penn State football team and he would give up a lot of that money to still be with his players and his staff and all those people that he brought to Penn State uh to build that program. Um and so when something like that happens, it kicks your butt pretty good. And you know, he’ll have to make the decision of whether he wants to jump back into it or whether he needs a little bit of a break. Um, you know, I I think sometimes a little bit of a reset can be really healthy physically, mentally, emotionally. Um, because when you do that job, there’s no escape. It is such a narrow life. And we love it. We choose to do it. We’re well compensated for it, but it takes a lot out of you when it when it doesn’t go well. He’s also another guy who’d be really good at doing what we’re doing right now. I’m sure you can give him some pointers if he were to. Well, I don’t know about that. I’m I’m still I’m still a rookie at this business and uh you know, it’s it’s u it’s it’s a different pace. But again, Josh, you know this, you know, in this business, you have to work hard, too. Yeah. Right. I mean, it’s I have a one-hour show I do with Taylor Tan Bomb on Mondays, and you know, the amount of prep that to get ready for that show is 8, 10, 12 hours for a one-hour show. I’ll show you. This is the sheet of paper that we got here. And we got three more right here. So you you now understand. And the art of this business is showing up and acting like you just showed up and making everything a conversation. But the only reason that happens successfully is because of all the prep work you do. And uh and as a football coach, I I love the prep as much as I love the games. And so I enjoy the prep for this job as well. Let’s close with uh North Carolina. Among the noteworthy comments from Bill Bich this week was an acknowledgement that he and Mike Lombardi when they took the job fell a little bit behind on the transfer portal front. Mike, he said that this roster was worse off than it was than when we got into the spring portal and said it was improved from that point. Uh, nobody could have possibly imagined it look like this a month and a half in. But what’s most surprised you about the onfield product you’ve seen? Well, Jess, the uh you know, kind of the the lack of skill. I mean, you know, with M. Brown, North Carolina always and even Larry Fedora, they always had really good skilled players. And you know, North Carolina made a very very large investment. Um but you know, if if I jumped to the NFL, there would be an adjustment for me. If I jumped to high school, there would be an adjustment for me. Um, I mean, anybody who who’s ever worked with Bill Bich or talked football with him always says he is one of the smartest football coaches, if not the smartest they’ve ever met. He’s smart. He’ll figure it out if he wants to do that. Um, and you know, when you haven’t been in college football, a lot of times the kids you get in the portal are kids that you recruited and they didn’t pick you out of high school, but there’s a pre-existing relationship and you know the landscape and you’ve evaluated all these kids and you know, he and his one son was in college for a year, but Lombardi, those guys all came from the NFL and so they they didn’t bring a lot of existing relationship ships in college football and every year that goes by, you know, that’ll get better. It’s just a ma matter of how patient are people going to be because as we’ve seen with James Franklin, this is not this is not a patient business and um you know, but I’m sure it’ll get better. Um and it’s just a matter of how quickly and how good. Dave Clawson, keep up the great work. Thank you for doing this and we’ll catch up sometime a few weeks from now. Yeah, I’m a lot more patient with these things now, Josh, that I don’t have a game this weekend. So, I apologize in the past if I was uh a little bit more stressed and anxious. We’ll take it to the house. 1 2 3 [Music] Hammer in Akaloosa County. Great name. Yeah. This uh 20-year-old woman was arrested after apparently she threw a hammer at her at a uh police officer. Yeah. So members of the sheriff’s office there uh they were conducting an investigation when this girl named Victoria arrived on the scene according to the report there. Uh, and it states that the officers were in uniform and they were using their parked patrol vehicles for cover because she allegedly threw a cell phone and then a large hammer at the officers in an unprovoked way. Luckily, the hammer did not strike any of the officers. The cell phone did strike one of them right in the head. That probably didn’t feel so great, but at least it wasn’t a hammer. And um yeah, so that’s all according to that report. She did not provide a statement due to her lack of cooperation according to the report. Uh no, I I don’t know what the motive was. The story doesn’t say, but uh she was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery on an officer. How lovely. Hammer. Hammer time. We’ll see how tonight goes. LaMelo, I’m excited. When’s the last time you watched a Hornet game? Up close. Uhhuh. Up close. Uh, it was 2017. Really? That long? LeBron, actually, no. Uh, 2017ish. I went to a handful of games around that time. Like, I went and I saw LeBron in the Cavs. So, we’re talking eight years. Yes. LeBron and the Cavs were in town. I saw uh the Knicks one time when they came to Charlotte.
