Where Are We At With Schotty After 6 Games As Cowboys Head Coach? | GBAG Nation

Let’s get some Cowboys Twitter in here. Top tweets going viral about America’s team. How about a quote from Dak Prescott, how the loss impacts his thoughts on the rest of this season. Quote, “It’s a long season. I’ve been three and five before and we made the playoffs. We’ve just got to find out a way to to win these close games. And I have all the confidence that we will.” That’s a that’s a bold-faced lie, isn’t it? I mean, this is a must situation for Dak. his coach Shotty, we just had his presser on last hour and into this hour and said you got to talk confident as a leader even when you’re not confident because if you want your players and those following you to play well, uh they got to have confidence. So, uh but it was it was two weeks ago that Dak said, “Yeah, looking at this Jets and Carolina game, we’re going to know who we are and what we’re capable of by the time we are done with these.” They were one andone boys. Uh who are they? What is the the Cowboys identity and what are they capable of? I mean, offensively, you’re a team that can play with anyone in the league. Defensively, you’re maybe the worst defense in all the NFL. And ultimately, that’s a recipe to be a sub 500 team, most likely. Yeah. You’re the 2024 Cincinnati Bengals. Yep. Oh, yeah. That’s They went nine and eight and just missed the playoffs. So, maybe best case, that’s kind of what you’re looking at. Yeah. You know, and I’ll say it again. I I think that’s worst case. You I think you really needed to take advantage of this opportunity to get not just a good draft pick, a great draft pick. and maybe, you know, the Packers drops you somewhere in the early 20s and you could really have a turnaround. I right now I’m looking at corner. Um, you know, just based on how how Diggs is playing, you’re going to let him go and you’re going to be having Blandon Rebels. So, I think you need a third high premium uh asset type of of corner. And, you know, you you look at the the caliber of corners that can be found in in the top 10. I think that’s exactly what this team needs. R.J. Choah wrote today about how if you look back on this hire, it was a Jones family deal. He was almost hired independently. A lot of people talking about this topic on Cowboys Twitter. Uh so the question is how much confidence would you have in Shotti looking out into the job field or the job market and finding, you know, a guy that could do a significantly better job next year? Yeah. To to replace Eberloose. Yeah, it’s it’s a fair question. You’ve seen plenty of coaches have to to cycle through a bunch of different defensive coordinators. You have an offensive-minded head coach and credit to Shotti because he’s built an awesome staff offensively. Uh but it might be a blind spot for him defensively or they might have just taken that responsibility completely away from him and maybe he had a couple of guys that he felt great about but the Joneses were like no little give and take here. You build the offensive staff but we want a guy that we’re comfortable with. We want to go get Eberlu. It’s it’s really a up in the air question on whether or not like Shotti knows how to identify it and they just didn’t give him the chance to or if he was like, “Hey, I kind of got nothing here and I’ll just take whatever you want to give me here on the defensive side.” But you you’ve seen it happen plenty of times and and you get one side of the ball down great. And the other side of the ball, you just can’t get it figured out. It does feel Yeah. Go for it. No, no, you got it. Go. Well, it it does feel very like it’s history repeating itself with the Romo right before they’re able to build the offensive line and this thing gets humming. And they still didn’t even have a great defense then, but it is very much like the end of Romo’s career where he is now playing at a tremendous level. You’ve got a quarterback that you actually do feel like could go and take a team to win a Super Bowl and your defense just stinks. And when it comes to flu, I mean, it it that’s the one thing for me and Shotti said and Steven said it earlier with KC, like he’s got a resume of success in the league. So, I don’t know. I mean, I really think that I I don’t know that it was a terrible hire. It might be a terrible hire in terms of the fit for your players and maybe they didn’t think enough about that. And I also think it opens up a conversation about this is a team that has the coach’s influence on drafting, right? Maybe it’s not the best way to always be drafting for your coaches because you don’t know how long a coach is going to be in your organization. And if one leaves to take another coaching job, maybe they get elevated as head coach, now you’re having to replace that. Maybe they don’t like the same style or they’re going to change something up. So you’ve got maybe scheme specific players that fit what DQ wanted to do and Zim adjusted and got them playing better in the second half of the season, but they don’t fit really what Flu wants them to do. And it’s going to take a while for Flu to kind of understand, all right, what are the strength and weaknesses of my players? He’s learning on the job here. And it is kind of square peg round hole, if you will. But o overall that hire is not looking like a great one right now. No. And by the time he figures it out, I think he’ll likely be gone. Brian, what do you think? Would they be stubborn enough to keep Eberloose if the season plays out similarly? If the season plays out, they they might do that because of like just what everybody’s talking about that the Jones is probably recommended to hire. I’d go get Matt Patricia from uh Ohio State. Ohio State doing a fantastic job. I think that Ohio I think I think that this might be one of those things. We’ve seen what kind of what college these college coaches coming in. We’ve seen what’s going on in Seattle, you know, we’ve seen Green Bay Green Bay. We’ve seen if you’re starters. Yeah. Mentor, I think is his name. Jesse Mentor. I I think if you’re if these teams are kind of morphing into these the way they attack you, you’re going to need somebody that has that understanding of the college game that way and you know the way that offenses are kind of adjusting. But I would I would think and I mentioned Matt Patricia just because I know Jim Nolles who was a national championship winning coach. He’s at Penn State now. He was at Oklahoma State for a long time and then he was at and he was at Ohio State won a national championship. Now he’s at Penn State. You know, I mean, there’s guys that like these veteran kind of guys, but I think Matt Patricia, somebody somebody from the ranks like that, Patricia now having that that college that college understanding with mixed with the pro might be something that you might want to consider thinking about. But I would definitely look at somebody from the college ranks before I look at somebody from the NFL ranks. The one guy that I think is is going to get some buzz is Jim Leonard, who is the uh passing game and assistant head coach uh in Denver. Yeah, he’s done a great job. And I think that he’s somebody that he was a coordinator at one time when he at the Ravens. Uh he known he wasn’t a coordinator. He played with Baltimore. Was he a head coach at Wisconsin? DB’s coach and was the interim coach there in 2022. Then he went to Illinois. In the last two years, he’s been on Payton staff as the DB coach. Just got elevated to assistant head coach. Maybe that’s cuz somebody else wanted to try and hire him, so they had to elevate him. And he’s their defensive passing game coordinator, but a coaching name in the league. I do think Jim Leonard’s a guy that’s going to get a lot of buzz. Well, and another gym, too. If Cleveland ends up cleaning house, Jim Schwarz, Jim Schwarz, maybe he would be a guy, but that’s kind of a a retread dude, but he’s built a Jim Schwarz is a bad head coach and a really good defensive coordinator. Probably right. what we’re looking for Spags, you know, something like that where it’s like you get a guy that will stick around for a while because nobody wants him as a head coach anyways. Like the Chiefs have it perfect right now with Spags. Yeah, Patricia. I just I’ve seen so much with him that it’s hard. It’s hard, but the Buckeyes are unbelievable. And you have the shoe in on like knowing some of those guys draft the entire Buckey. I kind of feel like I I feel like with him though that might be a situation where you know you you take a step back much like with Dan Quinn did. You know Dan Quinn had to take a step back and reinvent himself and reinvent himself and I think going to Ohio State really has kind of given this guy a little bit a different perspective on things.
