Amid extraordinary turnover in the manager’s chair, shifting power dynamics atop the organization, and continued on-field success despite the lingering presence of some internal strife, longtime San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller faces renewed questions about his job security.

This week, as the franchise contended with the fallout from Mike Shildt’s resignation as manager and reports of his conflicts with coaches and others in the organization, team sources indicated that another contract extension for Preller is possible but not guaranteed.

  1. We’ve made our bed, we have to ride the AJ wave now. No good GM is going to wanna walk into this situation. And the only GM who maybe could is AJ.

  2. Downvote me. But all we are playing for is second place. Dodgers are more loaded than any team in history. They will be heavy favorites for next two, three or more seasons to win it all. They basically have the greatest player in history playing for free for several years. I love the Padres and having a competitive team has been great but we still have no shot. Yeah yeah, got to prove it on the field. Well…Dodgers just swept a VERY good team. They get all the talent they want from Japan. Who else are they getting next offseason? They’re going to try to get better because they have the resources. Luxury tax is nothing to them. Like Robert’s said, they are ruining baseball. Go ahead and downvote me. I checked out most of this season because I knew this would happen and I know it’s going to happen again next season. Downvote me.

  3. Rosenthal and Lin want the Padres and Preller specifically to fail so bad. It’s annoying as fuck. Even if Greupner doesn’t like AJ, he’s a business man and he’s knows AJ is good for business as does Seidler. If AJ leaves, who is going to do as crazy of roster construction trades and shit to get butts in seats? No one. Padres need people to keep showing up to be profitable. Seidler and Greupner have to know this.

  4. Either way, they kind of have to figure out the Preller situation before committing to a manager search, right?

  5. Ken rosenthal article . Are always stirring it up about AJ. Mannys a punk and Tatis is a peacock . He’s critical of padres.

  6. If this team thinks it can be competitive without Preller the ownership really are idiots.

  7. Petco sold out more times than it ever has thanks to Aj and making this team exciting again

  8. I think AJ is a great GM but it sucks seeing our farm get traded. I do hope he stays because he makes a roster that competes during the season. It’s up the ownership and how they evaluate AJ. Do they see him as the one who can get the padres over the line or do they say otherwise? His contract runs out next year and they might have to wait till middle-end of next season for a new contract.

  9. If A.J. Leaves, the new manager would force the team into a rebuild. And unfortunately some here in this sub think that’s a good thing.

People here would rather waste time developing middling prospects instead of favoring a win now approach that has seen us be one of the best teams in MLB for the last 6 years.

  10. Ken “Bow-tie-Padres-hate-boner-wearer” Rosenthal article?

Yeah, this article has as much credibility as a three dollar bill

  11. Ownership has a massive call on their hands. And Preller has been here longer as GM than the Seidler family as owner and longer than Greupner as CEO.

AJ has only seen success the past 6 years, with Peter allowing him to sign free agents and international signings, while being aggressive in his method of trading highly rated prospects for MLB talent with controllable years. While it has been effective, this isn’t the only way to build a competitive and winning club.

This should be Preller’s last go. Allow him to finish what he started with Machado, Bogey, Musgrove. After that, the team goes under the guidance of Merrill, Tatis as the guys in their prime with whoever else but Machado, Bogey and Musgrove become the elder statesmen who are on the back end of their respective careers.

The window is closing faster and harder because of the Dodgers. So go all in with Preller for the next few years and just make it to the playoffs and see what can happen.

  12. Ken Rosemthal wishes he was a baller, he wishes he had a girl who looked good, he would call her. Wishes he had a rabbit in a hat to get more readers. Hello?

  13. We just have to do something about the fucking offense!!! We are so close we can taste it. Preller has been working like a dog. Hope there is no replacement and rebuild

  14. Ken didn’t have a photog to yell at today so he had to go after AJ. Garbage writer, kinda sad Lin is joining him.
