NHL brotherhood 🤝 How Mason Marchment & Matt Dumba supported Jake Oettinger | The Point
Jake, what are your memories from what happened last year, game five of the Western Conference Final? I was fired up. I mean, you’re at home. Chance to send the series back to Edmonton. Centering pass. Perry scores. One second. You’re in probably like the biggest game of your life to that point. Here’s another goal for Edmonton. A goalie change. Stunning. And a disastrous start for Dallas. And then 10 seconds later, you’re in the locker room like what just happened? I didn’t blame it all on Jake. But you know, the reality is, you know, he’s lost six to seven games to Edmonton and we gave up two goals on two shots in a an elimination game. Status quo had not been working, you know, and that’s that’s a pretty big sample size. Yeah, I I saw it. I didn’t agree with it. I would have left him in. He’s your guy. He’s been your guy. He’s gotten you to that point multiple years. So, that’s not a moment where you take your guy out. He’s one of my best buds and just on a personal level, it’s hard to see, hard to watch, um hard to be a part of. You think of your best player and one of your best players on the on the team. You want that guy on the ice. And I thought that was a huge disservice uh to our team at that point. their franchise goalender Sydney here. The team’s got two goals in three games. It’s like whatever they do turns out to be the wrong thing. You got to have your players back. I know as a goalie when your coach has your back, you can feel it and just makes you care so much more about being on the team and and doing all the right things for them and performing for them and, you know, it brings you closer. When you get pulled, it’s kind of like the most deflating feeling ever. and you know, you just kind of want to crawl into your bed and and cry pretty much. Do you remember going home that night? Some of the things you might have said to your wife or family. Probably not any that I can say on camera, just kind of in disbelief. Um, but yeah, it’s, you know, it’s the tough part about this sport. You mean you put everything you have into something and, you know, you risk it all in front of millions of people on TV. I had like Mason Marchman, Matt Dumba, like they drove right over to my house after the game. Like didn’t even go home just to like check on me, make sure I was doing all right. Went over there to check on the big man. You know, I think we ended up shaving our beards. Um and then, you know, we started having some beers. everything kind of got let out and you know I don’t think you ever can you really put that kind of situation behind you but I think Jakey is so good at just using it to fuel him and be better because of it. Jake’s the ultimate teammate too. So he’s been there for us uh during those times when it was hard so that’s the least I could do. 8 days later came changes in Dallas. Happy trails peaked boore. The Dallas Stars fired their head coach today, even though he had led the team to the Western Conference Finals in each of his three seasons. And for Stars Goender Jake, it was a summer of growth. There are other athletes watching this and hearing about your story. What would you hope they take away from it? Being a pro athlete is obviously there’s so much amazing great things that happen, but I don’t think people really realize the tough parts and how much that, you know, can eat away at people. Well, I mean, I’m I’m just like you. I’m a normal person. You know, I cry. I get sad. Looking back on the whole situation, I just trying to focus on what I can do better. And you learn a lot when you have stuff like that happen to you.
Emily Kaplan explores the aftermath and lasting effect of Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger being suddenly benched in Game 5 of the 2025 Western Conference Final.

DeBoer is an idiot.
Very inspiring hearing the support Otter got from Marchment & Dumba & also Hellebuyck <3
Coming from Helle after his playoffs it kinda hits different.
He probably knows how Otter felt.
He shouldn't have been pulled. but it can be said that the Oilers seem to have Oettinger's number. 11 WCF games over 2 years and the Stars only manage 3 wins. But obviously a lot of that is on their forwards and defence as well
As a Dallas fan I want to dis like Hellebuyck but he seems like such a genuine guy who ever starts for team USA they’ll have great goaltending
As a stars fan, it is great to see Marchment and Dumba come alongside Otter and interesting how those are the two guys who are no longer on the team. I always thought watching that game that it was insult to injury getting pulled and then having to listen to Panger on the broadcast talk about it for the next 2 hours. Unreal. Jake is strong, an elite mindset, look at how he has come out to start the season!
I'd love to hear why ESPN didn't interview any current Stars other than Jake. Maybe they wanted to stay out of it? Regardless it's great hearing from Mush and Dumba
Hellebuyck missed the McDavid missile….It might be Jake's time to step up….🥅
Team Pete…………………… it was the right call. ESPN pushed the narrative the rest of the game and brainwashed everyone. DO YOUR JOB! End of story.
Might have to take back a lot of what I've said about Dumba. Love the way the boys came together.
Heaven forbid anyone ever say anything negative about a goalies performance. Joke athletes. All head cases.
