Most legends (MJ, Kobe, Bron, KD) had a legendary midrange game. I can't stress enough how important midrange is to being unstoppable. It doesn't matter that we are a high 3-point shooting league nowadays, come playoff time, the midrange game is the best weapon. To prove my point, even the reigning MVP Shai is a midrange master! In just 1.5 seasons, wemby's midrange game looked promising thus far, even on low volume.
Now here's the thing with wemby;
Unlike other midrange snipers, who were masters of creating horizontal separation, his high release point naturally creates vertical separation. Also, he only needs to take one dribble to get that shot off, which means lower turnover rate. Midrange is the key when defenses are tight and we need a basket. He also needs to pull this shot off when he's guarded by a strong forwards like Aaron Gordon.
Wemby shot near 40% midrange last season, which is league average. But if he can pump it up to 45-50% on 5-6 attempts per game (like KD or DeRozan), it will be devastating. So Wemby's shot diet should look like this:
Threes per game – 4
Midrange (10-18 ft) per game – 6
Paint attempts per game – 9
Total field goals per game – 19
Now, his paint buckets are a variety of shots; it can be from lobs, backing down smaller guards, few post moves, transition bully ball ala-giannis, roll off the screen, tip-ins, off-the-rebounds, etc..

Yeah, the vertical separation midrange is KD’s specialty and he modeled his game after him. So I’m expecting to see more of this and less 3’s. I feel like the number of 3’s he took last year was him trying to show the org he could play the 4 role, which is what he prefers
Not with Fox on the court. If they quickly move to double wemby to prevent him going to the paint he can dish back to Fox to find the open man.
We haven’t seen SHIT about how good this team is going to be.
Wemby shooting over people isn’t new. Dirk, KD, and KG are three giant midrange masters that come to mind
I’d also say so far Wemby has been pretty turnover prone and his dribble is more exposed than your average player, so tbd whether he could really be a turnover depressor
I might prefer him catching at the 3 point line on your average offensive play…but if Wemby can get this quality of shot up consistently in end of quarter and end of game situations is huge
Practice makes perfect.
I’d like to rewrite his shot diet here. The post can’t be edited for some reason:
Threes per game – 4
Midrange (10-18 ft) per game – 6
Paint attempts per game – 9
Total field goals per game – 19
These are merely loose values for his shots, not a strict shot restrictions. If he’s hot outside then shoot more threes. If he has a mismatch in the paint, then go spam it.
All that matters is for Wemby to be an elite 3-level scorer who can pass to an open guy.
imo he is copying too much. i would like him to try to shoot like a standing dad shooting over his kid. similar to when shaq was in the paint cuz no one can stop him. imagine if wemby standing shooting form is the one to be scared about. let us see them first try to block it, rejoice like they won a championship when they did, then wemby just add a pump fake and a poster after.
Problem im currently seeing with wemby right now. Sometimes he wanted to do so much that makes him prone for turnovers. Hope he can address that
I think people must keep in mind is that, throughout history 220+cm player extremely easy to get injure. Mind-kind skeleton is not design for this height. Wemby has not yet get injure one of main reasons is his playing style developed by his young age. Shooting and Space are very X factor for his career.
Training with Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon and KG is the most important thing happen in his third year. The reason is dream shake can create shooting space by player himself. Mid-range is very important in intense game. Able to shot everywhere is essential for top players.
I agree that a lot of all time greats could score from many different places on the court but isn’t lebron like 37% from outside 3 feet? lmfao just because he’s the all time scoring leafier doesn’t mean he’s a scorer on the level of Jordan and KD
In the pre season he was only taking those if there wasnt much time on the shot clock. Imo his shot selection has become really good. The only “weakness” he has are turnovers.
