But, I want to get into pre-season right now and who looked good, who didn’t, who are we kind of like still waiting to see on. Right. So, I have three players that passed preseason in my opinion. And we’re going to go quickly through the first two because look, it’s no surprise here. Number one is Zion Williamson. He’s in shape. He looks good. He’s trying on defense. Those are the little things that he need, not even the little things, some of those are big things, right? That he needs to be doing, you know, and the little things, including trying on defense, warming up before games, which he wasn’t always doing. That’s the stuff that’s going to keep him healthy this year. It’s those more minor things, stretching, doing all of that is what’s going to keep him healthy this season, even more so than whatever shape he’s in. Are you doing the stuff that makes your body able to withstand injury? Are you keeping your muscles loose? All of those sorts of things. And I think we’re starting to see, you know, this year he’s doing all of the correct things. You you can get your weight down and still not be ready to play on a nightto-ight basis. It’s certainly going to help because it helps with the wear and tear on your body, but it’s those little things. Him warming up before all of the preseason games when he hasn’t done that before. him just simply playing in all of the preseason games when from what I’ve been told is he to he was just like I’m not going to play in him. So all of that’s more important than how he looked on the court and anything like that because look we know that when he plays he’s a borderline top 10 at least top 10 offensive NBA player. So we don’t need to spend too much time on Zion Williamson. You watch the games you’ve heard me talk about him here on Lockdown Pelicans. He passed the test. One thing that really jumped out at me though when I was doing a little bit of a deep dive on their preseason, Zion Williamson led the team in steals in preseason by more than double the next closest person. Kind of a cool stat right there. Trey Murphy also passed the preseason test. He looked like a number two guy at times a number one guy. You saw more moves in his bag. You saw an in between game that he hasn’t totally shown off before. You’ve seen the vision for the rebounding. You’ve seen better defense from him here too. We knew Trey was in store for a big season. This doesn’t surprise us whatsoever, but he looked ready. The threes were falling, the deep threes were falling. He had that step back three in the final preseason game. All of that made him look pretty good, like he was ready to go. And the third player that I really want to highlight and spend the most time on is Jeremiah Fears here. He passed the test. He looked really good in my opinion for a rookie. If you compare him to an elite guard in the league, he he didn’t do that well. Struggled to score at times. needs to kind of figure out how to draw fouls consistently. But overall, he played really well. Attacked downhill and you see him doing really good things in the pick and roll, whether that’s driving, whether that’s playmaking out of that. You know, he’s very good at using space to attack the basket and his handle is really, really strong. And one of the more surprising things to me from him in preeason, and I went back and watched all of his possessions, was he can attack by going both left and right. And I think this is really important and this is the type of thing that actually could lead him to having a better rookie year. If there’s one takeaway I want you to have from this segment of the show, it’s this. It’s him getting to his left or getting to his right. That was the most surprising thing to me from Jeremiah Fears in preeason here. Think about Zion Williamson and how he plays. He just goes to the left, right? Like he just goes to his left. His left hand is his dominant hand. He just goes to the left and he attacks the basket and that’s what he does. And if you shade him to the left, you can sometimes you can’t really slow him down, but it makes it at least like somewhat predictable. When you have a guy that can go to his left or to his right, that becomes a bit more of an unpredictable player. That makes it so much harder to defend. That is a highly, highly encouraging thing. You know, Jeremiah Fears is right-handed. That’s his dominant hand. But the fact that he scored basically going to his left and right in the same amount in preeason, oh boy, that’s what’s really good from him here. His handle’s good. Now, he doesn’t always finish with his left hand going that way, and he might get the ball into his right, which can create some problems, but the fact is he’s comfortable moving to the left side of the basket going against the dominant way. That’s how you become a better playmaker. That’s how it makes it tough to defend somebody in the pick and roll or on straight line drives. And with the speed that he has, knowing that if you shade him too hard to the right, he’s just going to go to the left. How do you defend something like that? It’s a lot harder to do that all of a sudden. That’s like I said, the one big takeaway I want you to have from this segment here is Jeremiah Fears being able to go to both sides of his body. It was really impressive to be able to see that with time as he fills out his frame to handle contact a little bit better. Kind of understands what NBA refs are going to call or not call, he’s going to develop into a very good pick and roll guard. And you can already see it. He’s got good vision in the pick and roll, too. One of the things I noticed that he did a lot of in preeason as well was they were running two guys at him trying to trap him and see if they can force the rookie to kind of panic a little bit, maybe turn the ball over. He’s very good at recognizing when that double team, when that trap is coming and making the read, making the pass before that defender fully gets to him and gets him into trouble. So, he catches him right as they’ve kind of committed to him. So, they’re not going to be able to hedge, recover, get back to their original defensive assignment. And this is how he’s using his speed, his attacking ability to create a lot of space. So, I’ve been very impressed by Jeremiah Fears, even if some of the counting stats haven’t always looked completely incredible, but I think he has looked very good and definitely past preseason here. So, I’m excited with what we’ve seen from him and hopefully we continue to see other great things from him during the regular season because the Pelicans are going to need to rely on him a lot and that’s going to be something that’s really important. You need to him to be as close to like league average as possible and that can be tough for rookie guards to do. You know, if you go back the every day heard me do the show on kind of what we project his stats potentially to be, it’s not incredible, right? And when you look at their overall like impact beyond just the counting stats, it’s not particularly fantastic. Um, but that’s something to kind of keep an eye on, I think, when it comes to Jeremiah Fears and what he’s capable of doing. Coming up next, let’s look at who gets an incomplete and who failed. And some of these names might really surprise you. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans is brought to you by Pelaton. So, let’s continue looking at players who passed the test, got an incomplete, and a couple who failed here in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans in the preseason. And if you agree, let me know who you thought passed. Let me know who you thought got an incomplete or failed. So, let’s go to the incompletes. Let’s go pass, which is what we just did, but let’s go to incomplete. And I have three players here for that. We’re not looking at everybody here, but just kind of some of the main guys. I think Jordan P gets an incomplete. Truthfully, overall, he looked pretty good. scoring the ball is what you wanted him to do and that’s kind of what he did. He he ran point guard for him at times and was a creator and actually did a very good job of that. So why am I grading him as an incomplete? You know, I think this is one of those things where I just need to see it a little bit more before I trust him. And maybe that’s me leaning into somewhat of the reputation he has around the league is sometimes not quite a polarizing player, but a guy that you’re just like, “Huh, are these empty stats? Are you actually doing good things here? I think I just need to see it a little bit more from him. I think I’ll probably change my opinion on this here. I think he’s closer to passing than not. He did a very good job of playmaking. The Pelicans offense was better when he was on the court. You didn’t see him turning the ball over. You didn’t see there’s some moments where you’re like, Jordan P, what the heck you doing, buddy? But overall, you didn’t see anything that was like boneheaded that makes you go like why would they trade for somebody like this? Or that he’s kind of like a laughing stock kind of player. I think this is someone who fits in really well, who’s really adding to the team chemistry and the atmosphere of the squad. That probably could be enough to put him into the pass category. I think the defense not great. I’m not expecting him to be a good defensive player and I’m kind of hopeful that this team’s offense is going to help prop up their defense more so than the other way around. So, Pool overall look good. I just want to see it a little bit more and then I’ll feel much more comfortable with him. I am slightly worried about, you know, the hierarchy with him and Trey and who’s the number two guy, who’s going to have the higher usage rate. I’d prefer it to be Trey Murphy given his overall skill set, but Jordan Pool is going to be pretty close to that, too. So, they’re kind of like both number two right now, but maybe that needs to get sorted out. Eve Mei, I think, gets an incomplete as well. I really liked him offensively. Really liked him offensively. He looked good on that side of the ball. watching him be a play finisher as a lob threat on offensive rebounds and put backs and all of that. He he looked excellent. He said, you know, over the offseason that that’s an area he really wanted to improve on and he showed that he had done that. You can see the growth. You can see the work from him in those areas and they need him to be something like that offensively. If he can be a play finisher, the lob threat, that’s vertical spacing while he doesn’t shoot threes, there’s a way to kind of leverage that with Zion Williamson. And I think you started to see what Eve Mei is capable of doing on that end. The problem is you need him to be a better defensive rebounder. He was not a good rebounder defensively in preeason for New Orleans. And you saw in their two games against NBA opponents, they did not defensive rebound well at all. And that to me is a very big concern. They’re going to need to end opponent possessions. Otherwise, their defense is going to be terrible and you can score all the points you want. If teams are basically getting two points every trip down because you can’t grab a defensive board, you’re going to be in trouble. Kavon Looney is out to start the year. He is a pretty good defensive rebounder. You could argue that he should start for that. But he’s hurt. So, it’s going to be Mei. Simple as that. And so, Mi needs to deliver in that regard. He’s got better size than Cavon Looney does, better height, but he’s not a really good defensive rebounder and he needs to start working on that. Otherwise, this team is going to be in trouble. You have Zion starting at the four. He’s not a great defensive rebounder, nor should he be with his size necessarily. So, you need others to really fill in the gaps and help in that regard. This is where Mei is going to need to be able to do that. Herb Jones also gets an incomplete. This pains me. The next couple are actually going to pain me here. Herb Jones getting an incomplete because we know his defense is going to be great. We know the defense is going to be elite. I’m just happy to see him out there on the court playing basketball. I’m glad the Pelicans signed him to that extension and all of that. But his offense was not great. The offense was not good in preeason. And for a team that’s gonna have some trouble with three-point shooting, more on that in tomorrow’s show, you really need him in that regard. And he didn’t deliver on that in preseason. He’s coming back after, you know, a very extended absence from playing basketball. So, that’s why I’m not saying he’s failed or anything like that. And it’s Herb. We love Herb Jones. We’re not going to fault him too much for anything here, but he does need to get that three-point shot following. And I’m hopeful that, you know, from the end of preseason to the start of the regular season, he’s able to really kind of get some work in on that, find that kind of rhythm. I hope it doesn’t take too long for him to find that during the regular season because they really, really need him in that regard. Because if you look at your starting lineup of Jordan Pool, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, Zion Williamson, Mei, Trey and Pool are going to take eight threes per game. That’s 16 right there. Zion’s not really going to take any. Mei’s not going to take any in that starting group. You need Herb to take four, five per game, making them two. You can’t have this where the spacings are going to be a little bit rough, where teams are just going to leave him open in the corners or leave him open on the three-point line to try and take away Zion Williamson. Let’s make Zion Williamson’s life a little bit easier here so that he’s not absorbing more contact, potentially getting more hurt because of that sort of thing. We’ve got to see Herb Jones kind of with with the offense here. So, he gets an incomplete. So, I’ve got two players that failed and one really hurts me to say. The first is Jordan Hawkins. That’s not the one. You know, I said in in Friday’s show that I, you know, I was a little bit conflicted. He he’s scored relatively well in preeason here, but he’s only shot, you know, he shot poorly from three, and that’s not going to be good enough for him here. You know, he scored in other ways, but the three-point shot wasn’t falling, but the team doesn’t necessarily need him to score in other ways. They they need him to make threes and to be that shooter and that court spacer that you can throw out there on the court that’s a weapon. And I don’t really think you saw that from him. He was able to impact the game in other ways and that’s an important thing but that’s not his role and you need him to just fit his role which is that of that movement shooter guy off the bounce or you know off a catch and shoot and he did not do a good job of that and for a team that and we’ll talk again we’ll talk more about this tomorrow is going to struggle with three-point shooting you you just need Jordan Hawkins to be able to do all that so he he failed to me you know I try and figure out what the role is going to be for him this year and where he’s going to be in that final preseason game he pulled after just five minutes of action with the starters, you know, out there and in that first half. That’s not great. That kind of says what Willie Green’s thinking about him. He had a pretty rough preseason in my opinion. This was the one that hurts me. I think Jose Alvarado failed preseason, too. You know, they need him to score and to shoot. You know, I I talked more in the offseason about this, but his role this year is going to need to be more of a shooter, too. They have more creation than they probably had in a really long time. You have Jeremiah Fears who’s likely going to be your kind of backup point guard over someone like Jose Alvarado. He needs to be a shooter and he’s shown the ability to do so at times, but he shot 30% from three in preeason. That ain’t it. I love Jos Alvarado. I love what he gives to the defense. He is an impactful player, too. They just play better when he’s on the court than when he’s not. You know, at the end of the day, it’s do you win your minutes? Jose Alvarado tends to win his minutes. But given that this team is much different than years past and that his role is going to be different than years past, they need him to fill that role. Similar to Hawkins, you know, he’s going to be more of a shooter. You know, the defensive pest role he’ll be fine with, but they need him to be more of a shooter, more of a scorer to provide some court space, and he did not do a good job of that. Pains me to say that. I got the the gameworn signed jersey here. But do you agree? Do you disagree on Alvarado, Hawkins, any of the other guys that I’ve said? Do you think Pool deserves pass? What do you think about Mei? What about Herb Jones? Let me know in the comments down below on who you think passed, failed, and had an incomplete in preeason. Coming up next, Derek Queen’s about to return. This is big, and I’ll tell you why. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. We are here Monday through Friday, the number one Pelicans podcast covering everything you want to know about this team. Subscribe. We have a YouTube podcast on YouTube as well. Watch us on the GF Coast Sports and Entertainment Network. And don’t forget, we will have a live show Wednesday after the Pelicans first game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Hopefully talking about a win. So, quickly as we start to wrap up the show here, we got a positive injury update. We don’t always get those on Derek Queen. Quote, “The Pelicans announced today that forward center Derek Queen has been cleared to resume full basketball activities. Queen, who had surgery on July 18th, 2025 to address a torn ligament, I’m just I don’t even know how to pronounce the word.” In his left wrist, originally sustained the injury during a Pelican summer league game on July 15th. This is big. You know, the fact is that they’ve got a couple of days before the season starts, which means they can get in a couple of practices. When someone comes back and gets cleared for full basketball activities, you need them to go through a couple of five on five scrimmages, games, stuff like that beforehand during the regular season, that can be really, really tough to find the time. The fact is he got cleared basically almost a week before the season started. Got this on Saturday, I believe, meaning he’s able to go through full practices for a couple of days. I don’t know if he’ll be ready on opening night, but he won’t hopefully miss more than a week. The conditioning should be there. Joe Jors has made that clear that this dude could run. His legs weren’t the one things that were injured. So, he should be in shape, he should be ready to go pretty soon after. And given the injury to Cavon Looney and that the center depth is pretty thin for New Orleans with Carlo Makovich a little bit injured right now and his status uncertain, they need some depth there. And Queen is someone that I have watched all of his college tape on and he can be a really good defensive rebounder. They’re going to need somebody like that. He’s also a very good point center, point forward. There’s an Alper and Shenun in him. I think that’s the type of player that can run your offense when Zion Williamson is out too. They still need somebody like that. There’s potential, he’s not there yet, to be a three-point shooter as well. Just getting that dynamic front court player back in and just getting him seasoned to the NBA, I think is a really important thing here. So, I’m very happy that this is coming, you know, right now. And maybe maybe he’s going to be able to be ready for the first week, the second week of the regular season. and not missing a ton of time. So that is something that I think is really really important for this franchise to get. So hopefully hopefully right he can be ready soon and really provide a boost for the team. Couple of other notes here as we wrap up lockdown Pelicans. The Pelicans picked up the option the team options on Eve Mei and Jordan Hawkins. the second the sorry the third and fourth year for rookies are team options. This is the option for Mei’s third year. So for next season, this is Hawkins fourth year option for next season as well. Mei is obviously a long-term piece for the team. I don’t necessarily know that Hawkins is. This just means he’s under team control essentially through next season. So it’s not like if you trade him, he’s going to bolt whatever team it is who would be trading for him and likely wants to have like some sort of opportunity to evaluate him, I think. and it keeps him there. His team option higher than you think when I tell you what the number would be. He’ll make 7 million is the team option for 2026 2027. He would have been a $4.7 million expiring this year. Otherwise, 7 million’s fine. You know, I think a team if they were interested could take a flyer on him or you include him for salary purposes in a future trade in some capacity, but that’s what they were always going to do. So, that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked on Pelicans. Let me know what you think about the Derek Queen injury recovery news. As always, I’m your host JakeMadison, Nola Jake on Twitter. This is the Lockdown Pelicans podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Don’t forget, we are going to have the live show Wednesday after the Pelicans opening game.
