Insider Drops BOMBSHELL About the Padres Free Agent…
Padres’s fans, we got to talk about MLB insiders starting to drop free agency bombshells surrounding Michael King. Let’s talk about what’s going on with the Padres’s alleged ace. What’s happening everybody? Welcome back to another episode of Padres’s Digest. Christian Person, one of your two hosts here on the show that is uh, you know, just vibing, watching the Dodgers do their thing and just trying to stick their head in their sand in the sand and be like, we’re going to focus on us. Uh if you want to drop a comment on anything Michael King related, love to hear from you on this. You guys see baseball very differently than I do at a lot of things. So that is a really fun part of this. Uh also if you want to hit the subscribe button, I wouldn’t be mad. But you know, as I always say, no worries. If not, I will still be here to talk baseball. And I want to talk about this headline that I saw going around. 90 million is now the the price tag that MLB insiders ranging from Sports Illustrated to the Atlantic Business Insight. It see it seems like this is maybe the pretty agreed upon estimated range that somebody is going to be paying for Michael King. Uh this is somewhat good news. Maybe, maybe not. as we do all of this uh analysis on Michael King and the Padres’s free agency at a whole, but Michael King hyper specifically is um the best of his best is is amazing and it’s awesome, but there’s there’s there’s questions to me about both his availability and how much his singular popular talent costing us all of our available free agency money actually changes the narrative for the San Diego Padres’s. The numbers for Michael King are very good. This is what he ended the season with five and three 34 RA. Um but that was on very limited starts. He did not play two massive chunks of the season that he missed. one much the the much larger one with a shoulder nerve impingement or whatever and then the second stint that he missed with a knee issue. So, good numbers, but not necessarily like um that he did it off of 250 innings. And that he is a guy who he made the move from reliever to starter and then since then has been very good as a starter, but has been very inconsistently available as a starter. And that’s kind that’s kind of tough to deal with when you’re talking about wanting to give a guy big top tier money. But I I think that this the hopefully I figured out the right amount of text here to copy and and and isolate for for the phone users. So this is not too small, but I’ll read it along. This is an excerpt from the article talking about quote an injury plague season where he being king made just 15 starts might take King out of the running for a nine figure payday. But after Ranger Suarez, Dylan CE, and framer Valdez, there’s an easy case to be made that he is the best available starter on the market. Ranger Suarez, Dylan CE, Framer Valdez. I am concerned about the potential for things to escalate into uh us losing my I if if I had enthusiasm about the 90 million being potentially affordable for the Padres’s. I lose that enthusiasm when I read that sentence and look at what the rest of the starting pitching market is like. There is uh uh Nobody has a perfect predictor on all of this. Nobody can say, “Okay, yeah, um, guaranteed that Dylan CE goes to New York for 110 million and this guy goes there and that.” But you can have well educated guesses, but nobody’s going to for sure know. I I would be curious if in reality there is a bigger market for Dylan CE than there was for Michael King. You can dig very deep into the the spin rate and the analytics of the h, you know, he’s still got a ton of strikeouts and he only gave up hits to uh batters that are last names start with L who were born on odd days and eat root vegetables. And if you would have a team eliminate that, he’s back to being perfect. Like, okay, sure. But you’re kind of doing voodoo hocus pocus math. and Michael King’s just like you maybe take you’re taking a little bit more of a risk on the um availability but overall the skill might be I maybe they’re 1 A 1B kind of thing but that even then at 1 A1 1B I think that maybe it’s crazy to say that uh one is the affordable end of 90 million and one isn’t the affordable end of 90 million but I could see this going from the Padres’s giving him 85 or something ballpark where we’re like, “Oh, dude, it’s it’s so close. Stay here.” But then, uh, 91 turns into 98 real quick in a bidding war between a couple teams who realize that, um, you know, starting pitching is on the thin. I can maybe make a whole sub rant about if there’s a labor lockout next year that that’s going to wonk the market. And okay, maybe like if you if you want to drop a comment if you want to start going down that rabbit hole because it is the offseason. We don’t have that much to do, but I I I’m kind of going to I’m going to play it straight. We’re going to hit it down the fairway of like there will be at least some baseball in the 2027 season. Um so thinking on the that like linear sense of like looking at a couple years out, I I could see where teams want to want to lock King down for a multi-year if he’s coming off an injury. get them on the cheap, but then if you got a that’s what I’m saying. If you got a couple people going in on thinking that, it winds up not actually being on the cheap. Flip side of that is Padres’s are, unless they dig deep into the coffers and come up with money that they have not publicly stated they are interested in spending, they’re going to have about 20ish million dollars a year-wise to spend and allocate on a contract. And maybe not even that because in the next couple of years, Manny and Xander and Fernando’s deals are all going to start hitting some big price escalators. So, there might be some concern about long-term side. But all of that to say, the Padres’s probably got like one good shot in them. Maybe two decent punches, but not like it’s not going to be a spinning spree. They’re not going to go in on Kyle Tucker. They’re not going to go in on X, Y, and Z. all big guys to be like, “Okay, we’re gonna we’re going to fix all the problems by actually like fixing the problems and going out and getting the best available talent. They’re going to go get the best they can.” Um, and so I’m curious, does spending that bullet on, hey, we kept Michael King here instead of Seattle, but then not allowing us to really do anything else to the roster other than uh this bargain basement BS. Uli Guriel signings and stuff like we don’t have the farm system to necessarily be like okay there’s a guaranteed generation of that guy can fix the infield backup that guy can fix the problem with power that like none of those guys are really loaded up in the hopper ready to go for next season. Sure, we can always have some good here or there, but I it’s not s that I don’t see that as a sustainable like we can spin crazy on Michael King, lock him down, be like, “Oh, dog, we’ve got an ace.” I get that Joe Musgrove is coming back. I don’t hate I don’t hate talking myself into um you know Musgrove King Pavetta Darvish someone uh you know Sears Waldron whoever okay I can run it back with that that’s not the worst but that does that rotation at the cost of the 90 million would be the king is being paid right on the dot if not slightly more than just Joe Musgrove. Um, sure, maybe. I don’t know. I It’s It’s a It’s an intriguing question. It’s a bummer of a question because I hate having to be like, “Oh, we got to pick one.” But if we’re going to pick one, are we going to spend on Ryan O’Harn? Are we going to spend on Michael King? Are we going to spend on X, Y, or Z? The the because the target is now set. to remind you this is where this is where the people who know infinitely more about baseball than I do are saying that Michael King is going to land three years 90-ish million four years 90ish million give or take options and all that kind of construction on the back end of stuff. But all right, that’s where we’re at. That’s the Michael King news. Drop a comment. Let me know what you think on all of this. Fun to start playing offseason GM with you. And as always, if you want to hit the subscribe button, it would be much appreciated. If not, no worries.

How is he proven to be an "ace"? I don't think he's even capable of delivering a full season of work. Probably why he's been kept in the bullpen before.
Pivetta is the Ace of the Padres, NOT King, he ain't worth that much. he hasn't played a full season yet
90 million for an injured player no.
No no no no no no no no. Sign Valdez
King is not worth close to that he is a #4 pitcher at best
Fire AJ Preller NOW!
$90m for 20 years maybe, but he's only got maybe 5-7 good pitching years left so thats a no.
SOMEBODY will pay that or get him to come down a little, but SP is a premium, I’m paying it, of all the guys, u gotta pay to play
Unload King arm is barely held together. Try to get Cease to take a discount offer if not let him go. Also See if Yu will walk away or take a discount somewhere else. Musgrove will probably give us 10 starts maximum. Let Suarez go. Hold onto MoreJon, Miller, Estrada, also Loreano he can hit. We are in trouble next season. The existing team does not have IT. Padres haven’t had IT for 3 seasons. Chemistry is not working. No more 10 year contracts for anyone over 22. 3 year contracts maximum. With Dodgers in our division we are always playing for Wildcard. They cheat the system no doubt ruing fair play but that’s Dodger ⚾️ all the way. ❤️⚾️ but not the Padres chances.
I remember when gas was $0.99…
