Never good to be mentioned in a stat alongside Sam Howell. That graph is damning. That Pressure % Faced about to go wayyyyy up
The Panthers put out the blueprint – play man and blitz. Penix has to figure out how to make defenses pay for those looks.
He has a bad tendency to pump fake when there’s defenders in his face which is typically a sign of indecisiveness.
He looks lost out there. It’s like he has no peripheral vision. He never moves laterally.
He’s always sucked under pressure.
Teams have figured that out.
Now the question is this: how will Penix and Robinson respond? This will make or break Penix’s career
Big Yikes.
Crazy arm strength but low pocket awareness… he’s supposed to be able to run a 4.4/4.5 ish 40 but he looks like Kirk sometimes. I don’t see him reading defenses and going through progressions. He needs coaches that can help him develop but the Falcons coaches aren’t offering that. It doesn’t help that Zac Robinson sucks as a playcaller… what’s up with those 2 screen passes to Kyle Pitts? Need to pick up 1 yard? Have both 3rd and 4th down be in pistol formation and completely take away the QB sneak, which is much harder in short yardage situations.
I’ll check the PFF grades to confirm my suspicions but my impressions so far are:
* Penix was bad under pressure. (duh)
* 49ers keyed on Bijan and we couldn’t make them pay for that with play action / deep throws. Once again this is a Zac issue.
* That said we were completely outcoached on offense and defense. The defense was good except for when it came to stopping CMac. You would think that practicing against Bijan all the time would help us defend against CMac better.
* Likewise we lost the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
* Wilkinson was exposed. He’s a 3rd string OT and it showed in this game. Storm Norton where are ya?
* Matthews clearly wasn’t 100%.
* Mooney is rusty. Had a couple of critical drops and the bonehead not stepping out of bounds play. Do we even practice the 2 minute drill? Why is our clock management so bad?
* The Deablo to Bertrand switch was a huge downgrade and killed our defense. Does Troy Anderson still exist or is he a myth?
* Ruke Orhorhoro may be near Grady level for pass rush but he’s a terrible run defender compared to Grady. He should not be on the field on 1st down or obvious running situations.
* The 49ers secondary was depeleted but they were mugging our WRs and were only flagged for it once or twice.
On a side note the announcers were gushing about how dominant Trent WIlliams was. The clip they showed was him blocking James Pierce Jr and clearly face masking him. It seems all the calls went SF’s way. This is one of those games where you wonder – was this game rigged for SF to win?
He is mid I would rather have Flacco to be honest. He cant escape pressure and just takes sacks or throws it into the stands, I really thought he would be able to mobile and escape the pocket but he cant figure it out. If we want another statue might as well play Cousins.
I’ve just kind of accepted that Penix is going to have to have a near perfect situation to work out. He’s not elite enough at anything to overcome a mediocre staff or questionable OL. I know that’s true for most QBs but its especially true for Penix. For example, Ridder was going to suck regardless of the coach or roster. With Penix, you can see flashes when things are rolling but he’s just not a guy who is going to go out there and make things happen himself.
I know he had a scary injury history but I also have to say even for a guy who was known as a pure pocket passer his mobility is ridiculously bad. He just flat out refuses to take 5 yards in front of him if a play breaks down and you can’t win like that in the NFL anymore.
Coaching
Line collapses before he can even look at a second option. Bijan is making the line look wayyyyy better than they are.
Yeah, his pocket awareness is really bad. Half the time he doesn’t see or feel the pressure until it’s too late. The other half of the time, he panics and forgets everything he “should” be doing.
That being said, he’s started 9 games in the NFL at this point. He should get better at this as he gets more experience.
He hasn’t been good under pressure for sure but when you have pressure you need people open quick. Everything seems to take so long to develop for us and I can’t tell if it’s just guys not getting open or the play calling
So the exact same issues that plagued him in college. Go look at the Michigan game, this was quite obvious
The words we’re looking for are Dog Dirt.
Pocket awareness rating is like a 16/100
And you can see he is hesitant in getting hit.
My observation from last night (and the whole season so far) is Penix holds the ball for waaaay too long and isn’t very mobile. Also didn’t seems like he hasn’t processed pressure fast enough to get the ball out quickly if needed to. That combination leads to games Ike yesterday.
Where I’m not sure is if it’s Zac’s playcalling that makes him hold the ball or if it’s Penix or both
My penix doesn’t do well under pressure either.
My biggest thing with Penix is that when the blitz comes you typically hear “throw into the blitz”.. Penix never does this. I’m not sure if this is a Penix issue or ZRob not giving him quick outs/checkdowns. Also, seems like Mike never throws it to the middle of the field. It’s always outside the numbers.
As long as Robinson and the pistol are here he’s fucked and we’re fucked.
I was probably the most pissed off of anyone last night(check my comment history), and penix had a terrible game last night. But penix still hasnt played a season’s worth of games yet. Also no one got any seperation and he had to work with a quick mental clock last night because wilkinson was facing someone with a major skill gap on him. I still think he has a top 11-12 qb ceiling, but the FO has to provide him with an eagles like O-Line due to his bad pocket awareness and damn near immobility
When Penix was going through the draft process my standing line was just watch the two playoff games to get the cliffs notes version of him as a quarterback. Texas was unable to get pressure on him and he picked them apart. Michigan got after him and he was terrible. In the title game he was pressured on 38 percent of his dropbacks and was 4 for 18 with a TD and two picks. It’s always who he has been as a quarterback.
“Might”
Sometimes I wonder if we watch the same games. I felt like penix did avoid the pressure nicely and had a lot of time to throw outside of the pocket but was inaccurate and not on the same page as the recievers.
