Greg Newsome II Discusses Trade, First Days in Jacksonville | Jacksonville Jaguars

Yeah. Um, like I played here my rookie year and my second year preseason, so I’ve been to Jacksonville a few times. Obviously, I’m not too familiar with the Florida area besides uh I went to IMG Academy in Braden, Florida. So, I’m used to that. But, um, I found a new I was just on a game. Uh, my agent called me and was like, “Uh, Jacksonville wants to trade for you.” And I was like, “Let’s do it.” So, yeah. I end up finding out at maybe like 11:00 p.m. And I had to get everything packed. I was playing 2K. Yeah, I’m a 2K player. So, you’re just Were you expecting to be traded? Was there a potential for that? No, I wasn’t expecting it at all. Yeah. So, it’s pretty whirlwind 24 hours. Got to jump on the plane, get here, crash course. So, head still spinning a little bit. Yeah. Um, but now, I mean, the goal is to beat Seattle. So, um, I got to do whatever I can to get the playbook down as fast as I can so we can get a win. How tough is it to get up to speed that quickly a couple days? Yeah, it’s it’s definitely tough, but uh you know, I’m a Northwestern man, so I I pride myself on my my brains, so I’ll be all right. Liam said there’s some crossover. What sort of crossover is there between Schwarz’s defense and this one? Yeah, just um just some of the way we play quarters, um things like that. Obviously with Schwarz defense, I played a lot of press, man. Um so in this defense, I’ll definitely be able to get my eyes to the quarterback a little bit more and hopefully get this team some interceptions. Cuz what did you guys run at Northwestern? A lot of quarters. Yep. How’s it been getting to know some of your teammates? I think one of them is spying on you right now. No, it’s been great. Um, yeah, Josh, he trains in Exos at Exos Arizona. So, I I knew a few of the guys already um just prior Khif, we were in Cleveland together. So, um it’s been great. Um they’re definitely welcoming me. So, super excited. What have been your impressions of Coach Cohen and Campell so far? No, I love him. Um he told me what what he’s looking for um for me to be here, like trading for me, like what does he want me to bring to this team? And um I’m super excited for that opportunity. When you found out you were coming here, did you go and look at any of the clips from the defense early in the season at all or anything like that? No, I was I got my daughter. She was crying, so I had to get her. Then I had to pack my bag. Then I had to figure out like what are we going to do with my apartment in Cleveland. So it was just a lot of a lot of stuff uh that I had to deal with. when you’re like trying to pick up the new defense, do you rely more on like the assistant coaches or some of the like the guys in the locker room to kind of help you out a little bit more? Yeah. So, um obviously doing extra meetings um with the coaches, but um I think just like the safeties, the nickels, the corners, like they even today like it’s sometimes I’m out there, they’re letting me know like what it is. So, um they’re definitely been super super helpful. Like I really appreciate them cuz I’m going to need it sometimes like you know things go fast sometimes. But, um, I I’m definitely super excited to play with these guys. So, do you expect to play a lot on Sunday or are you just going to kind of take whatever you can get at this point since? Yeah. Um, definitely take whatever I can get. Whatever coach decides, I’ll be down for it. Obviously, you know, I’m trying to play as much as I can. Um, I love playing a game of football, but um, whatever I can pick up, um, and retain um, and whatever coach’s decision is. Contract. I was going to say you looking forward to another trip to London? Oh, yeah. I was literally after that they were like, “Yeah.” Um, just letting you know we’re leaving from uh, London on Monday. I’m like, write it back again. But no, it was it was super fun. U, my my sister’s um, husband is from London, so I got a lot of a lot of family out there, so it’ll be fun with it. Is a contract year for you. Is it exciting when a team wants to add you to their defense and kind of get you in the building to see what you can bring? Yeah, super excited. Um, to like to feel wanted like um, they they told me, my agent told me like they wanted you, you know what I’m saying? kind of like Cleveland didn’t reach out. They wanted you. Um so my goal is to do whatever I can to make their decision right. Um to get this fan base super excited. Um and that is my my goal. With how quick everything happened, have you even had a chance to kind of sit and maybe not mourn, but just realize like everything that you had in Cleveland and now you’re trying to build in Jacksonville? Yeah. Um I definitely sat for a minute. Like the biggest thing is just the guys. Like I’ve been with some of these guys my entire career. Especially a guy like Denzel Ward. Like that’s my brotherh for life. So not to be out there on the field with him is definitely going to be hard, but you know, it’s just like this is what God had for me. So um I’m super excited to be here, be with this defense, number one in takeaways right now. So looking to continue that as well. You talked about this a little bit, but the team has said they think you’re a really good, you know, fit for their scheme. I mean, from what you’ve seen from the scheme so far, I mean, how do you like about how your skill set fits in there? Yeah. Um, I feel like my my rookie year um with coach Joe Woods, we had a similar scheme and I think that was one of my best years of football. So, I’m super excited to be able to, you know, show my versatility. Um, play some zone, play some man, do a lot of different things. So, I’m super excited for it. I think I’ll I’ll fit great with this game. Feel good waking up as a on a four- win team. Yeah. No, that was the biggest difference. Like obviously like in Cleveland, you you’re sitting there mad like we got to find a way. We got to find a way. And then when I get here, I’m like, “Wow.” Like, “We just won.” Like, obviously, I didn’t play, but we just won. So, yeah. No, it feels amazing. Um, we’re just I’m just gonna try to do my best to help them uh keep this upward trend up. I feel like we’d be remissed if we didn’t ask you early impression on Travis Hunter. Oh, yeah. Um, great. Like, I I’ve just seen him. It’s funny. I see him go out there offense, catch a post, and come back and then play defense. Like, it’s crazy to see. Like, I wish I can do that. Um but but uh no, he’s he’s a he’s a unicorn. That’s that’s a guy you call a unicorn. He’s he’s been great. Um just helping me out there as well.
