Live from the Built Ford TUV studio at FedEx Forum, it’s the Gary Paris Show presented by Ortho South on YouTube at Grind City Media and the official Grind City Media app. Now, here’s your host, Gary Parish. All right. I’m here. My name is Gary Parish. I’m speaking to you from the Bill fortough studio. We’re at FedEx Forum downtown Memphis. Bennett Doyle right there producing a program. Glad he’s with me. Glad you’re with me. Hope you’re getting through the day best you can. Daddy lost everything. And I hope you like your bad news mixed with good news. Or at least I hope you don’t mind it that way because that’s what we got from the Grizz yesterday in advance of tomorrow night’s regular season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans. Clip notes. Jaw’s good to go. Tai is not. We’ll talk about it momentarily. First though, quickly, let me set today’s schedule for you in the next segment about 20 minutes. Nathaniel Root is going to join me. He’s a former Memphis basketball player, perhaps the most famous walk-on in Tiger basketball history. He’s got a new book out called Root, a Memphis Hoops Dream. It’s available right now, Amazon.com, anywhere else you get books. Root going to be here with me in studio in the next segment to discuss it and just walk down memory lane with me if you don’t mind. I’m just going to reminisce with an old friend, Nathaniel Root, going to be here in about 20 minutes. Finish talking to him. We’ll take a break. Come back and do five more things you need to know. At which point, we’re going to discuss five previously undiscussed stories. Among them, the NBA season actually gets underway tonight. Tonight, we got a double header on NBC. Spend a few minutes on that. We’ll do it in about 40. 2025 World Series is set. It’s going to be Los Angeles against Toronto. It’s the Dodgers against the Blue Jays. Squamble up. We’ll show you how Toronto got there a little later on in the show. Monday Night Football was last night. The Lions whip the Buccaneers and Mike Evans is done for the season. He’s got a broken collar bone. We’ll spend some time on that in just a bit. Legendary Florida coach Steve Spurer has revealed who he thinks the Gator should target to replace Billy Napier. I’ll tell you the names he attached to the job. We’ll do that in the third segment. And the president of the United States of America is reportedly considering commuting the sentence of Shawn Combmes. Is the free Diddy movement about to climax? I’ll ask Bennett what he thinks during the segment. We call five more things you need to know. Then we’ll eventually do GP’s carry out and we’ll call it a day. So, that’s the rundown. We got a lot to get to, but I did want to start with your Memphis Grizzlies because we have two more medical updates to share. One good, one not so good. First, the bad so we can then uh do the good and then feel happy going into the break just before Root pops in studio at Grizzlies PR. That bag of joy delivered the news yesterday, 5:20 p.m. Ty Jerome, last season’s runner up for the NBA six man of the year award while playing with the 64- win Cleveland Cavaliers. He has been diagnosed with a high-grade right calf strain. He won’t even be re-evaluated until four weeks from now. Big Bennett, your thoughts? Uh, it is a really tough blow because he was obviously one of your big offseason acquisitions. Um, I think him and Contavius Cowwell Pope are two guys that you look at to replace a lot of that production that’s uh gone from Desmond Bane’s departure. So obviously um it is a it is a tough loss. There’s just no other way to spin that. Um you you need him this season. And hopefully it’s uh you know hopefully it’s closer to four weeks than uh than not. We’ll see. We will see. It’s obviously not ideal. And it’s just wild and I promise we’re going to get to the positive stuff in a second, but it’s just wild to sit here having ended last season banged up John Street closed. Jaylen Wells street clothes in last season banged up and then all right that that’s something that happened and the year before it’s something that happened but like you know sometimes things bounce your way and other times they don’t and for the past couple years they ain’t really just bounced our way but at some point this stuff’s got to turn around and you know everything will be fine fingers crossed and according to Bobby Marks NBA insider ESPN last night I had to send you that the Grizzlies will be the first franchise this season to qualify for a hardship waiver because when you have four players at the same time miss three consecutive games and those players are expected to miss more. You can apply for a hardship waiver that the league will approve and the Grizzlies are going to be able to do that after three games just before they play next Monday at Golden State. There will be a player to be determined on the Grizzlies roster in theory. He’ll be added between games three and four because so many Grizzlies are hurt and will be that way for the foreseeable future. Not great. Not great. I do and I’m not going to sit here and like bore with like the names I’d be interested in, but I do hope that they use that and and bring they’re going to use it. I know. I know. I’m just saying like I hope that they get one of these useful pieces that I think’s like, you know, guys that just got cut. There’s guys out there. We do this all the time. Um, and we’re like, uh, you know, we get the names out and the quite literally the only people available right now are people that probably don’t belong in the NBA with few exceptions. So, I’ll participate in the speculation. Uh, as can I interest you in pressures that you if you want to campaign? I don’t care. Former Memphians. Yeah. Campaign is bring them home. Bennett wants to bring Bring them home. Bennett wants to bring somebody home. bring somebody. I’m I’m I’m open to the possibilities, whatever. So, that was the bad news from Monday. Ty Jerome calf injury won’t even be re re-evaluated for four weeks. The good news was that Grizz coach Tomas Iselo told us after practice yesterday that John, the franchise point guard, is expected to be available for tomorrow night’s season opener against the New Orleans Pelicans. Praise be. Say it with me, Bennett. Praise be. Praise be. Praise be. Now, obviously, we still have like 33 hours till the season opener. Everybody be cool. Let’s Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch, as they say. But according to the coach, John is expected to play tomorrow night. So, barring a surprise and despite all of the unfortunate stuff that the Grizzlies have been dealing with, tomorrow night, the Grizzlies are expected to start this way. John Morant, Kavius Cwell Pope, Jaylen Wells, Jiren Jackson, Jollandelle. That is four of the five projected starters when the roster is fully healthy. So yeah, it sucks that Zack Edy and Brandon Clark are both sidelined in the front court and it stinks that Tai Jerome and Scottie Pippen Jr. are both sidelined in the back court. Undeniably, it does real damage to your depth. Like instead of starting in the middle for your team, a former top 10 pick who is a secondyear NBA player who was ranked in the top 100 of all NBA players by ESPN earlier this off season, you’re probably now starting a 29-year-old undrafted player in the middle who has only started 11 contest total in the NBA in the previous four seasons. That’s a downgrade. That’s not good. We don’t have to lie to each other. And instead of replacing, say John Morant late in the first quarter or to start the fourth quarter with a player who either finished second in last season’s six man of the year race or with a proven son of a Hall of Famer, you’re likely going to be using those minutes on a rookie selected with the 48th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. That’s Javon Small. and he has been impressive this preseason, but we can agree that’s not ideal. But I think this is where I’ve sort of settled in. If you’ll allow me to try to be optimistic for a second out, I think I’ve just decided I’m tired of being frustrated, beaten down about this basketball team and its lack of health. Like what is the point of walking around like this the day before the season opener? Like none of this is great. Um, but it could be worse. Again, Josh’s healthy, Jiren’s healthy. Contavius Carwell Pope, Jaylen Wells, both reportedly healthy. So, even with the depth severely damaged, 80% of the Grizzlies ideal starting lineup is reportedly healthy. That’s no different than what New Orleans going to put on the table tomorrow night with Dejonte Murray, a 2022 All-Star still recovering from an Achilles tear. John Jiren are both expected to start tomorrow night. when they do, as Jess told you this morning on her show, it’ll represent the first time both have started a regular season opener together since 2021. So, y what we’re presumably going to get tomorrow night is not something we’ve had in years, and that’s a good thing. So rather than focus on the lack of depth and the string of injuries, I’m not going to spend too much time frustrated by it until losses follow the injuries and we can talk about it that way. If they start 0 and one because of depth issues, let’s have that conversation. if they start one and four because of depth issues. Let’s have that conversation. But tomorrow night, four of their five projected starters are going to be there presumably. They are a favorite in the game by four points. That’s the early number. John Jiren should play. Moneybag yo is going to be there. Shine down’s performing at halftime. Carla Thomas is performing. It should be a legend. Yeah. Inside FedEx Forum. Tickets are available. grizzlies.com. Can you join me in being optimistic? They’re supposed to win tomorrow night. What is the What is the point of being frustrated when the day before the season opener, your two franchise players are both healthy and you’re expected to start one and0? I’m ready. I’m looking at that. The jaw news was and and I think we all kind of like, you know, I guess we expected it, but like to actually get it is just a great feeling. I mean, it just like I think it’s important for this team to be competitive this season. I think it’s even more important for him to play a ton of games this season and be a star in this league. Like, I just it it gets you it gets the fan base excited, man. Like, that guy is is one of the most popular players in the league, but it’s important for him to get back to being like that allstar AllNBA level type guy this season. And so, for him to be available to start the season, it’s massive. I don’t think there’s any doubt that he needs personally like a a bounceback season. Yeah. Where he plays a lot and performs at the level at which his talent suggest is possible. That’s the thing. Nobody is asking John Morant to do something that he has not done before, right? Just asking him to to do it again. Yep. He’s capable. Um, you know, you go back to that 2021 season opener when John Jiren last opened the season together on the court in the starting lineup. He had 37 points in that game. Um, he can go big and I suspect that he will, but more than what anybody’s prediction matters, like he’s got to do it. Every time I say I expect him to have, if healthy, a great season, there’s gonna be somebody in the chat saying, “Haha, I’ve heard this before.” You guys are how many years in a row you guys gonna spend sit around talking about the guy who’s always hurt is going to have a great year. You doing that again? I get it. I’m not dismissive of it. I get it. I just don’t understand what the point is of focusing on that when we are starting fresh tomorrow night and he is reportedly good to go. If we get to a different place, I’ll focus on that place. But the place we’re at right now, like this should be fun. We have an NBA franchise getting ready to start an incredibly important season. I would maybe argue the most important season in franchise history given everything that is in play right now. And celebrating 25 years in Memphis. It’s a big season because of that, too. It’s kind of cool. It’s also a big season because we’re trying to get 25 more. Yep. And there’s not a lease agreement signed right now. And we’ve talked about that before. But yes, there’s a realistic scenario where this thing could go the wrong way. You know, get one more hamstring pool from a star player, start stacking losses. People don’t buy tickets. This could go the wrong way. I just don’t know the point in worrying about that today when there’s something else to think about and it’s a more enjoyable thing to think about and that is tomorrow night we’re going to have a regular season home opener for the 25th time inside FedEx Forum. The two star players are both reportedly healthy. We’re going to have Zion on the other side. Like that’s cool. It’s a fun opponent to start. big X in the building and you’re supposed to win the game. If things go the way they’re supposed to go this season, the Oklahoma City Thunder will win the championship. On a micro level, if things go the way they’re supposed to go tomorrow night, the Grizzlies will start 1 and0. Hopefully, they do because I am like you. They they we’re in total agreement here. John needs a bounceback season and they the the team needs a bounceback season as well. something that can galvanize this community, get people excited, and make it feel on game days downtown the way it used to feel so often because we’ve gotten away from that a little bit. Um hopefully we get back to it very quickly, but either way, it it all starts tomorrow night. 7:00 tip. Pelicans in town. Tickets available. Grizzlies.com. Jiren both expected to be in the starting lineup. Moneybag yo there at the beginning of the game. Shine down there at halftime. Memphis legend Carla Thomas. It’s going to be a wonderful night in FedEx Forum. I’m looking forward to it. We come back, we’ll turn our attention to Nathaniel Ruth, the former Memphis basketball player. It’s Nathaniel Root, former Memphis basketball player and best-selling author. The new book Root, a Memphis hoop dream. It’s a available right now at amazon.com. Nathaniel Root, look at you. How are you, man? Man, I’m doing great. Just happy to be here. excited to be here with both of you and and uh do a little talk in basketball and life and man I’m just excited to to first just to see you and for people just full transparency we’ve been texting back and forth talked a little bit over the past few months I’ve known you were working on this book um I uh was thrilled to to be asked to be a small part of it um because I I just look back on those years so fondly and as I was thinking about this last night I really do believe This is true. You are the most famous and beloved Memphis basketball walk-on of all time. I don’t even think it’s close. There are walk-ons who have played there forever. I don’t remember most of them. There are scholarship athletes that played there forever. I don’t remember some of them, but I remember you. Everybody remembers you. Do you have a sense for why that is? Why you were so popular and still are today? I could say to any Memphis basketball player around my age, roots coming in studio with me and they would know exactly what I’m talking about. Why do you think that is? I I think the connection that I made with the fans, we all we all know Memphis is a bluecollar grind city and that was my role on that team. Um come in, dive for loose balls, take charges, and when I’m open, better be making a three when I when I’m open. So get give the crowd what they want. But I I think just connecting with the crowd in that way. And if you look back at the rosters during that time, we only had about 11 12, you know, guys on the team, maybe 13. So, um, as a walk- on and then earning a scholarship, you know, there it was a lot more opportunity for me to play, um, at the end of games or somebody’s hurt or, uh, first game I ever started, a couple guys were late to class and, you know, I I get my first start and so it was easy to um, be able to fill in those roles that if you have 15 16 guys on a team, I don’t have that opportunity. Right. Some of that I I some of what I’m talking about is like you played, you actually got on the court and so that mattered. I think your last name mattered. Like I said, it’s just an easy thing to, you know, like the root. It just works for some reason. Um, what do you remember most about that time? What what when you think back to it, what what stands out? the the thing and everybody wants to know about games, but for for me it is that camaraderie and the brotherhood of being with your guys in the locker room, in the practices, on the bus, on the planes, in the hotel rooms, and just creating that bond. Uh, now obviously the fans and I don’t think I think a lot of people have forgotten what it’s like to play in that pyramid and watch a game in that pyramid. and my senior year, senior night, Cincinnati, 21,000 people, you know, electric and how loud it could get. Uh those are some fond memories, but my my biggest are just being with the guys and and doing the the little things instead of the games, but obviously you always remember the games. When I talk to NBA players and they think back to college, even people who only spent a year, so like a oneanddone guy, they still like cherish that time and always like without exception, they’re going to have friendships that carry over. Correct. Dating back to that time. Who do you still keep in touch with from those Memphis days? Number one, my my ride or die, Big Earl Baron. I mean, that’s that’s number one. Him and I were freshman together. Um, and you’ll you’ll uh in in the book I talk about how we meet first my first practice and uh from day one we were we were best friends. We walked out our last game together. Uh we’ve been best friends ever since then. Uh enjoyed supporting him and in his NBA career and uh when I was coaching at UTP and Auburn with Barbie, he would come down and for those. So obviously Earl is number one, but uh Big Red, Dwan Irwin, Anthony Rice, uh I I attended Kelly Wise’s Hall of Fame induction a few years ago, Marcus Moody, Courtney Trash, Shannon Foreman. Oh man, Shyron Chapman, you know, Jeremy Hunt. I see Jeremy Hunt. Like I come to Memphis a lot, friends and family in the Lakeland, Arlington area, and Jeremy always comes over. So um you know, it’s it’s a good it’s a good mixture of guys that it it’s just wonderful to hear all those names again. Like it takes me back to a to a different time. You told me a story and when you said Earl, it just sort of popped in my head. You were playing poker with Earl one time. Oh yeah. And you happened to be at a table with Justin Timberlake. I It was him and I believe it was his mom, right? And we were playing and and I sit down. Earl’s there and of course you got Timberlake and and I’m assume it was his mom or relative. And uh she looks at me and she says, “OMG, are you rude?” And I’m like and I’m like and this is a couple years after playing Earl. This was Earl’s first year signing with Miami. And I’m like, “Yes, ma’am, I am.” She goes, “I am your hugest fan.” And JT looks over and goes, “She ain’t lying.” And I’m like, “Wow.” Like that’s that’s a real moment for me. That’s a real moment. Yes. and and it all the the like Justin Timberlake has watched you play basketball and and well that and and in the book I tal Lil Wayne came to our games um my junior year at two lane and then when two lane came back to Memphis and we’re walking out of the locker room he called us all by name and knew us all and was like man I’m a huge Memphis fan and so just those experiences man you just you don’t forget those that’s right talking into Root former Memphis basketball player here in studio the new book Root a Memphis hoop stream available right now. Amazon.com. One of the things you put in the book is that, and I love the way you you phrase this, it was not your dream to be famous. It wasn’t your dream to be in front of cameras. It was your dream just to be a Memphis basketball player. You grew up in West Tennessee and you just wanted to be a Tiger. And like I wasn’t a basketball player, so I didn’t have that same dream. But I understand that because Memphis basketball was a big thing in my childhood. Do you think there’s another kid growing up in West Tennessee right now with that same type of dream or has has those things faded a bit? GP, I hope so. Or what did I write a book for to inspire people, you know? So, I hope there is. And and whether it’s to be a Memphis Tiger or or another college program or or whatever their dream is, uh I’ve said this to a lot of people, this book, I hope you find your story, a little bit of your story and your life in this book. Whether you’re a a young upand cominging athlete that wants to make it or you’re a middle-aged 44 year old former player who’s taken another dream of writing a book and trying to make it become successful. Uh no matter where you’re at in your stage of life, I hope there’s people out there that are still dreaming and and want to uh you know live their dreams and are working toward making that happen and to come to fruition. The only reason I ask you that is because Penny um had a press conference a couple of weeks ago and more or less said like we have lost some of the the phrase the term he used was fandemonium. Like he’s like it’s not where it was when I was playing in the pyramid. It’s not where it was when Root was playing in the pyramid. It’s not even where it was you know a decade ago inside FedEx Forum. Um, and you know, even Penny, who is the greatest alum of the University of Memphis, recognized that something’s not what it used to be. And I just wonder as somebody who lived through it, like, do you think that’s we can get that back? I I think you can get it back. I do. Um, I think some things that hurt us are your TV deals. Yeah. You know, I live an hour and a half away and I can sit at home and and watch them on TV just about every single game. Now, I still come to games because I’m an hour and a half away. I think that hurts some. Um, I think sometimes you look at uh roster turnover and you know, you look at Earl Baron, right? Four-year Memphis player. You followed him for four years and then you felt that connection with that player and we just don’t get that anymore. We don’t get that anymore. And and I mean, don’t get me wrong, Memphis, if you’re a Memphis player, they love you and they support you, but you know, having that four, threeyear player that we used to have is not there. And I think sometimes that connection um might hurt us a little bit on that fandemonium. And like, you know, I I do think that the the brief period of time that so many student athletes now spend on campus and the constant roster turnover like plays a role in this. And just as I’m glancing down at the YouTube chat right now, like I see the name pop up, Arthur Barklay. Yes. OG. There’s another one I talked to. Yes. And he’s he’s right here. It’s somebody I love. Like my favorite Memphis basketball players are the ones who like I I have a relationship with them and then they go on to do incredible stuff regardless of whether it’s got anything to do with basketball or not. You writing this book makes me proud. Arthur Barlay working back in Camden in in local government. It makes me like extremely proud and um I just love seeing his name and he said he will see you this weekend my man. Look forward to seeing you big dog. So he’s he’s coming back presumably for the Hoops for St. Jude tip off at FedEx Forum on Monday night because Cal your former coach OG’s former coach is bringing his Razerbacks here and to be a part of a celebration of of his nine years of Memphis basketball. You’re going to be there. OG’s going to be there. Do you have a sense for how many other players are going to be in attendance? Uh yeah, I do. I think you’re going to see a good turnout. Um when this first started uh the university some some people within the university here reached out to me and then uh you know Cal’s assistant Lena reached out um like how many people can we get like can you help us get these people? I’m like absolutely. And so I just start reaching out to everybody I know. If I didn’t have their number I’m on Facebook because to me we need a reunion. we need to get back together and just, you know, I mean, I’ve graduated in 03, so it’s it’s been a while. And just like you said, I think the main thing is celebrate celebrate the the time that Coach Cal here. Um, celebrate the players who were here and and, you know, bled and sweat and died for the blue and gray. Uh, honor those and celebrate those and and and let’s let’s take this and look at this, man. What a good cause we’re raising money for. Right. And and that’s something I’m I was going to tell you. I’ve I’ve got a poster in a book that as soon as I get done with your show, I’m I’m headed over to St. Jude and donating for a silent auction coming up uh you know that they’re going to do I think the uh the night before the game at their banquet. So, uh what a great cause for that. That’s really sweet. Um I I do anticipate a nice turnout. Mhm. John’s former players show up for him, whether that’s at the Hall of Fame or just in general. And he’s like, I I’ve always been fascinated by the way he is able to maintain relationships. He has he now has players who played with you sending their sons to play for him. And so I know that the feelings got all twisted up here when he left for Kentucky, right? And those wounds were open for a while. It feels like the fan base is now healing. But I do think it’s always important because I I I think I’ve had a a unique perspective on John because I’m not just somebody who is a Memphis basketball fan watching from a distance. I was around this man every day. I I I I don’t know that we’re best friends, but we’ve been friendly for a long time and I’ve seen every angle of him. I’ve I’ve seen the relationship he has with people and I’ve I’ve been able to register that along with everything else. You register. You played for him. He allowed you to be a part of his program. Can you just speak to us about the relationship you have with John, the relationship he has with his players and and what what he means to to this city? So, I I think number one, when you talk about, you know, relationship and you look at all his former players, um, you know, when you see them do interviews, how much they praise him and love him. Um, and now I’m not, you know, I’m I’m not a John Wall. I’m not a Derrick Rose or anything like that, but when I reach out, he answers. And when you needed something for this, he was there for you. I text I text him. I said, “This is what I’m wanting to do. Would you be a part of it?” He within 10 minutes, man, I’m all in. You let me know what you want me to do, right? You know, there wasn’t any other questions about, well, what are you going to say in the book or what are this? He just I’m all in with you. He could have been too busy. He probably was too busy probably, but he didn’t bring that to you. No. And and I think that’s the thing you’ve got to respect about him and like you said, celebrate that coming back here um to Memphis and let’s celebrate that when you’re walking around like you know I know you you live an hour and a half away but you’re back in the city every once in a while like is it still 20 years later people hey are you that guy now it’s not as much as it used to be when I first got done playing but yes it’s crazy how people still um recognize me or uh or send Facebook requests and and and a message that just is very in, you know, inspiring and humbling that people still remember you. And then of course, what’s funny is when I’m here with Earl, they’ll see Earl first and then they see me and they’re like, you must that’s got to be rude. That’s got to be rude, you know. So, uh, but yeah, it’s it’s very it’s very humbling and rewarding. Um, and I guess going back to the earlier of, you know, why I connected. Um, I think this city saw a lot of me in themselves. Yeah. I think, you know, just that hard work, that grinder that that never stops and and and I think that’s what they see. So, let’s focus on that for a second. I think everybody understands you ended up at the University of Memphis and you were celebrated and still are to this day. How how did you go from high school to Memphis? How did you become a part of the Tiger basketball program? So, uh my mom, this is a a little known fact, my mom was on the very first volleyball team at Memphis for Elmer. Mhm. Both my parents originally from Memphis. So, um, grew up Memphis fan watching them on channel 10 on on tape delay in the floor. Yeah. So, you remember those days? 10:00 10:00 at night. That was the only time mom and dad would let me stay up late as a kid. But, uh, came out of high school unrecruited. And I think when you look at things and and and the good Lord, God’s got a plan for you. He knew I would have signed anywhere. NIA JV scholarship would have been offered, I would have signed it, right? Um, but working with my dad that summer and his friend, uh, that I was a little down on in the dump said, “Where do you want to play?” And I said, “I want to play at Memphis. Go walk on.” And I’m like, “Not that easy, but that’s what I’m going to do.” And went to Trouts in October, got cut, right? And uh, then a guy by the name of Ryan Johnson, who was a really good football player, receiver during those days, they promised him he could play basketball. I think I remember that. He played he played a few games after the football season was over with and he went back to football and coach Jones said uh just go give me that white boy because because because now tryyous I couldn’t miss. I could not miss. So um that’s how it happened. And then um you know played the second half of the season my freshman year and then when Caliperry got here, right, man, he was letting go of scholarship players and I’m like I got to do whatever I can. So, we were doing individual workouts during that time and we only had eight returning scholarship players and so two groups of four. So, I was left out. I showed up at 5:00 a.m. with that group. I’d go work out with Rock, our strength coach. And then the second group would come, I’d stay in. And what happened after about the first week and a half, some injuries would happen, some sickness, cows, go get root, right? And I was there to show him, you know, I want to be a part of this and I’ll do whatever it takes. And I think that’s what helped keep me on the team and then from there, you know, just flourished under him. Tell me about the first meeting with John Caliperry. That must be that must be interesting. Like this is a larger than-l life figure coming to campus and now you’re right in front of him. Well, I think number one, I thought, wow, all of my dreams can come true with this man. Yeah. And I I knew I wasn’t a next level NBA player. That was that was off the table. We know that. we we know when we’ve hit that of course we we’ve hit the plateau but I thought man I want to get into coaching right who better to learn from than coach cap so when I first met him and just like you said just the the overall aura and and celebrity kind of around because he had that even Oh yes yes is that you know you grew up watching him with the UMass days before he went to new he kind of fell off you know for us for us kids who grew up watching more college than NBA. Once he went to the NBA, you know, the Nets weren’t on TV. It was all Mike or or Penny with Orlando, right? Um, so when he came though, you still was like, “Wow, this is about to be my coach. Man, this is this is exciting. I can do some things.” I I really do think that this is among the things you and I have in common, which is, you know, among the reasons you’re able to write this book and be a household name in this community is in part because you played for John Keller. Absolutely. I don’t think there’s any doubt one of the reasons I got the job at CBS is because I covered John Caliperry. Like when I interviewed for that job, the other people that interviewed were from like New York Times, Washington Post, Fox Sports, and then it was the Commercial Appeal. Like I didn’t have the job title that fit with these other candidates, right? But I was on their radar because people paid attention to John Caliperry and I was the guy writing the most words about John Caliperry. And um I’ve shared that story with John. I really do think I at least got put on that radar because I was covering his team as opposed to say Tick Price’s team or Johnny Jones team or Josh Passner’s team. It was just different. It was a different a different time. So, um, now he comes back here on Monday night. If you could talk to Memphis fans who are going to be in that building, because you are right now, what message would you send to them? because there still is some I guess mystery about exactly what that’s going to look like and and what it’s going to feel like. My hope as somebody who cares about the program is that whatever got twisted up is put over here for the night and you just look down at that court and you see those familiar faces and you see the man who made it all possible and you you you you you cheer that and applaud that the way you used to. But I don’t know if it’s gonna be 100% of that, right? Um, what do you expect and what would be your message to Memphis fans who are going to be in the building on Monday? I think my my message would be, you know, let let this be a celebration. Number one, we’ve talked about that. Let that be a celebration and thank him for the time that he did spend here. And I want to remind and I talk about this a lot as a former Memphis player and people ask me, you know, a lot of people were cut deep by by him leaving. Um, but you know, you gota think he he’s not from this Memphis area, right? You know, he he was chasing his dream, so you got to respect him chasing his dream. But y’all, we would not have coach Penny Hardway if John Caliperry was still here. We wouldn’t, right? So, Cal had to leave for us to be able to have Coach Penny leading our his alma mater in this city to where we hope we get our first national title. And what better would would story be for, you know, coach Penny to do that, but it wouldn’t have happened if Caliperry wouldn’t have left. So, I think I think just be let’s be supportive. Um, let’s celebrate and um you know, you can go back to cheering against Arkansas once he leaves, which I’m sure a lot of fans will, but yeah, I think I think celebrate and honor um him and and the players, all the players that are are coming back to to be a part of this. Yeah. I just, you know, that’s going to be a that’s going to be a night for John and his family, right? And I hope it’s a good memory. I do too. And and I think it will be. I think it will be. Before I get you out of here, just uh this is probably the first time some people are seeing you or hearing from you in a in a long time. Yep. Tell people what you’re up to. So, uh my sister and I work for her. Uh she hates when I say that. She says, “You work with me.” But she started a uh a consulting agency for nonprofits where nonprofits hire us to go in and help them raise money, capital campaigns, uh build out their development apartments, things like that. So, I started uh working for her four years ago. Um now, I’ve just opened a home furnishing business in my county of cabinets, vanities, flooring. I do that uh the book now. Um doing that plus uh I’ve already got some speaking engagements lined up with that. So, I want to, you know, do some inspirational talks, things like that. And then I do some basketball training, one-on-one uh training and stuff in in my county for the the kids there. So, um you know, that’s what I’m doing. I’m busy. It’s it’s non-stop, but I wouldn’t have it any any other way. I really like the idea of you talking to kids because um you know, my my kids are in sports and you know, I’m their father, so they’re probably not going to be 6’8. You know, they’re probably not going to be super athletic. You know, there’s there’s probably a limit on on what is possible. And you you you’re an example of that. Like you acknowledge yourself. You’re not Derrick Rose. You’re not John Wah, but you can get everything out of it that that you can get everything out of yourself and and turn it into something that may not lead to the NBA, but it can it can lead to stuff and and create long long friendships and memories and um you’ve got a wonderful story to to tell that resonates. And I I like the idea of you of of you speaking to kids and sharing that story cuz it’s a a worthwhile story. And it’s it’s here in the book, Root, a Memphis Hoops Dream. It’s available right now, amazon.com. Man, I I didn’t know back when we were sitting in the fence center every day that you’d end up writing a book before I before I did. You know what’s funny? What’s funny? When I was doing this, hey, I was listening to the show and you’re and I’ve heard you mention, man, I would love to write a book. I’d love to write a book. And if I wasn’t already finished with this one, I’ i’d have said, “GP, man, what what do you want to do here?” But but I was pretty darn close to finishing this one when that happened. I’ve had uh opportunities and I I think where I actually am on that is I would like to be done with a book. I would like to I’d like to hold a book and say this is my book, but I don’t want to I don’t think I have much interest in going through the process of doing it. It’s about a year and a half, two-year process. Well, okay. So there was a time probably around the time you were playing um where I was approached about doing a book and I reached out to some friends who had who had done it and I had one person in particular New York Times bestselling author and the first question in his mouth he said would you write this for free and I said what do you mean he said he said would you write it for free I said well no I don’t have to write it for free I’ve got somebody approaching me he said that’s not what I’m asking you would you write it for free do you want to do it so badly that you would do it for nothing and I said, “No.” He said, “Then don’t do it cuz you will hate the experience if you don’t if you’re not dying to do it.” And I tell you, I was dying to do this. I invested my own money. This I went through a self-publishing company, right? Um invested my own money to do this. So that way I own 100% of the rights. And I guess like you said, yeah, I I wanted to do it. That’s how bad I wanted to do it is not only did I do it for free, but I put money up to do this. That’s impressive. And and that’s evidence that you you really did have a story to tell and you and the desire to tell it. So now let’s uh let’s make it a bestseller and let’s turn into a movie. Yes. Well, hey, I’ve I’ve sent it out to California to some friends out there this week that um uh big shout out to a girl I went to uh lived in our county, Malia Mitchell. Um her and her husband are in the in the movie business out in California. And she was like, “Oh my god, love to read it and try to get me in touch with the people they know.” So you know, who knows? Any any Memphis movie people, producers? Hey, re reach out. But I do want to say before we get off, thank you so much for uh providing a quote for the back cover. That that means a lot. I appreciate it. I I appreciate it. I was just man, I was just happy when your name popped up on my phone. Yeah, I appreciate it. I uh I look back on those years, you know, I was four years full-time beat writer at the Commercial Appeal in that gym every day. And um you know, those were long days and and some you know, some wild stories. Wild stories. I will say this, don’t expect all a bunch of wild stories in this book. Uh some things I got to leave out, but it’s not a tell all. I have actually like and as I was just thinking through book ideas one time, and it’s not something I would ever do, but like I could write a book just about crazy stories connected to Memphis basketball in the early 2000s. Yes. And just like I’d put I’d have plush club stories and and like it was like a it was rock star. Yes, we really were. And then and what was funny is you hear this about the like you watch the Miami Hurricanes how popular they were over the Dolphins back and you know and let me tell you when the Grizzlies came to town uh when we went out or we went somewhere they waited on us to first. That’s right. You know you were a Tiger you you you went first. I have told people this. is hard to believe given how things have sort of flipped over the past couple of decades, but there was a time where if I’d have just walked in, say the Flying Saucer, and I had good tickets to the Grizzlies game or good tickets to the Tigers game, and it could be Grizzlies, anybody, right? Or Tigers East Carolina, did not matter. People would pick up the Tigers tickets before they picked up the Grizzlies tickets. That’s where we were. And I even remember sitting in the fence center one time, now we’re just talking. Um, and John was had all you guys sitting there. And he was he was emphasizing something that I I I thought was a good message. And I and he said, “I know you guys right now are rock stars.” He like used that term. He said, “You can go to 152 and walk right in the front door and everybody’s handing you drinks and it’s the That’s your life right now. It’s all going to be over soon.” Mhm. You You’re going to look up one day. Right now you think this is your life. Yeah. It ends quickly. He said you’re going to wake up one day and you’re going to be 33. Mhm. You’re not going to be a famous basketball player. You’re not even going to be a basketball player anymore. And these lights are going to dim dramatically. Understand that. And um I I don’t think everybody understands that in real time. But but um I I thought it was interesting that he he was he was putting that message on you guys, that lesson on you guys very early. He did that a lot. Like and you know, he he made a com I remember one time our our junior year, we we lost a little bit at the beginning. That was with Dwan Wagner’s freshman year. And um would that team not go to the tournament? Oh, I know. That was like on that roster. If they got root would have made some more threes, you know what I mean? I mean, the truth is Kelly got hurt. That’s that’s what happened. Kelly got hurt at the end, right? But but that was for people that don’t remember. I’m off the top of my head here, but that was Dwan Wagner, Antonio Burke, Scooter McFaten, Kelly Weise, Chris Massie, Earl Baron, Jesus Lord. I mean, Anthony Rice. I mean, that was multiple NBA players, multiple all conference. I mean that that that is a loaded roster. Very loaded roster. And he he told us that year we got on a run in the middle and he said, “Guys, when you lose, we are all bad and they hate us. But when you win, we all look great.” He goes, “I can’t walk down Bill Street without hearing people say, “When are you going to play Root more? Put Root in the game more.” He said, “So just to let you know, when we win, we all look great.” And he, like you said, he would tell us, you know, stories about that. and and then once it’s over, how do you reinvent yourself? That’s right. And I think that’s a lot of problems that uh college, but now I think you now you’re looking at high school kids who travel ball, baseball, basketball every weekend their whole life. I’m not going to go good enough to play in college. What do I do now? Right? And and I think that’s a there’s got to be something that we’ve got to look to at helping these kids understand. How do you redefine yourself when sports are done? That’s Nathaniel Root. The book is called Root: A Memphis Hoops Dream. It’s available right now, amazon.com, buddy. Does that add any intrigue for you? Yes, it does. I think it does. I’m curious. I want to see what it looks like. What does it sound like? Is MJ going to be on it tonight? I am not sure of that, but if you’re going to sign him to a contract and promote him as a part of your coverage, I would want to have him there for the launch. No kidding. Like I saw that there’s going to be a some type of program centered around him that they promoted earlier this week, but I don’t know if he’s going to be part of like the launch tonight, but man, that like come on, man. You want Michael Jordan talking about the two teams opening up the NBA season. That’s as good as it gets. Yeah, we’ll see. U 6:30 is when it gets started. Rockets at Thunder followed by a nine o’clock tip, Warriors at Lakers. The Rockets got a lot of attention yesterday because their starting lineup was announced and pretty big. It It’s like the biggest. It’s the biggest of all time. It is the tallest starting lineup of all time. I don’t think there’s any doubt that being big at every position or at most positions can be an advantage. Um, this is something that the Celtics have prioritized and it’s something that Duke prioritizes now. You look at last year’s Duke team that finished number one at Ken Pom and like despite losing in the final four, finished number one at Ken Pom was the favorite to win the national championship even though Florida won it. One of the interesting bullet point facts about that Duke team, they were at least six foot six at every position and it was the tallest average height for a starting lineup in the entire country. Mhm. And you talk to John Shy about that and he will tell you that it’s something that he prioritized, an idea that he got from the Boston Celtics. Um, you’re never going to hate being two inches taller at both backcourt spots, at three guard spots, just being bigger everywhere. And it’s why trying to make it in that league as a smaller guy is quite literally right now, right now in this moment, harder than ever. Mhm. Like we talk about Kennedy Chandler sometimes because he’s from here and because he was drafted by the Grizzlies. If he went to Tennessee this season and had the exact same college basketball season that he had, which was a good one, I don’t even think he’d be drafted now, right? And it’s because even in just a few years, size has the importance of it has been exaggerated dramatically. And you’re going to see it on TV tonight. Now I wonder because there’s these these can be two different things. Is it good to be 6’5, 67, 69 at the one, two, three? Yeah, but at some point are you too big? I mean it’s for sure good defensively like I still like go back to I I mean Kevin Durant starting at two guard at 6′ 11. Yeah, I still think that Fred Vanbley thing is such a big loss for them and I think that they will be in the market for a point guard at some point this season, whether it’s through trade or or or maybe they pick up someone in free agency, but I just I feel like they’re going to get somebody in there. It’s why like if I’m the Grizzlies, I want to pick up like whoever the best available point guard is out there right now just so they can’t have them, you know? We’ll see what they do, but they should be good. They’re going to be good anyways, but I think their ceiling is they they need the floor general. I don’t think Aman Thompson is that. Kevin Durant has said he has no feelings whatsoever about being back in Oklahoma City tonight to watch a banner get raised. You believe him? Um, man, it’s been so long he’s gotten rings since then. I I’m sure that there’s probably some kind of feelings there, but I do believe him in a sense that I don’t know how big it is. is I mean he’s had such a long journey and he’s gotten rings along the way. I’m not sure how big it is. It would I don’t know that it would bother me, but I would feel something cuz like I was the king of this place one time. That’s like if I were Kevin Durant, this is the way I think I would feel. This was my city once upon a time. That’s true. I won an MVP here, went to the finals here, had a possible dynasty on deck, and then they moved James Harden, and then I moved to Golden State. And the way I imagined that unfolding from there was my career takes off and I’m chasing Michael Jordan for championships and whatever happens in Oklahoma City happens in Oklahoma City. In reality, he went to Golden State. He won a couple of titles, but they’re not respected like a Giannis title or a Dirk title, which is silly. I I agree. But like it is what it is. Yeah. Yeah. People they don’t get those titles without him. They got him. No, they don’t get those titles without him. Those specific ones. I know they’ve won without him before, but they won before him, they won after him. Yeah. I just But I think you might be right. Maybe. I think you might be right in that moment in those seasons. Yeah. He was the best player on those teams. Yeah, man. Yeah. is those are Steph’s teams, but he was the best player. Yeah. But regardless of whether you appreciate those titles or I appreciate those titles, broadly speaking, fans are like, “Those are fake titles. Those are fake rings, right?” And then the Brooklyn thing is just a disaster. And every everything since then has been like, “Yeah, he scored a lot of points and made a bunch of all NBA teams, but it has not been what he had hoped it would be. Even the ring stuff has not been received the way I know he wanted it to be received.” And so then you’re standing there tonight and it’s like, well, here’s the young MVP who actually brought a title to this place. I don’t want to say he did something that I couldn’t do, but he did something I didn’t do. Mhm. Maybe I could have if I stayed, but I left and then he did it. And so this place could have been mine, but now it’s his. I’d have all those feelings in there somewhere. I might I might be, you know, and then I might just look at my bank account and be like, I I got $800 million. I’m, you know, and two rings and like life’s fine. All right. But I would I would feel something. The idea that he says he doesn’t feel anything, that doesn’t ring true to me. Okay. I don’t know that he’s mad, but you gotta feel something. Well, I think he wants to I think all of those feelings that you talk about, he is hoping to get that in the twilight of his career in Houston. Like that’s what he’s hoping for. Like he wants Houston to be the team that he is remembered for. You can just tell by the way he talks about it, signing that huge deal. He wants this to be like his legacy. I think his legacy will likely be, more likely be amazing basketball talent in many ways unlike anything we’ve ever seen in me. He’s one of my favorite players ever. My tune has changed on him so much. I love Kevin Durant. Yeah. And I just like I like his attitude. I like I like his quotes. Yeah. What’s interesting about I’m just sort of thinking through this. The reason the Rockets can start tonight the tallest starting lineup in NBA history is because of him. And I don’t mean just he’s a part of the starting lineup. I mean, for decades, if you were a sevenfooter, 6’10, 611, they told you to play next to the basket, right? And then here comes Kevin Durant. And next thing you know, every tall 8-year-old in a basketball gym is trying to learn how to dribble and shoot. Mhm. Like, do we get Wimby without KD? No, I don’t think so. No, I don’t think so either. I don’t think so. Maybe because he’s from France and they just teach it a different way over there, but the abundance of unusually tall players being unusually skilled that traces back to Kevin Durant. Just like the abundance of guards being able to pull 5 feet behind the three-point line, 10 feet behind the from the logo. That traces directly back to Steph Curry. You’re not supposed to cross half court and think about pulling. But he did and then people started practicing that and now we have Caitlyn Clark. Like all of these things trace back to a specific thing and I think that’ll be Katie’s legacy. incredibly skilled, unusually talented basketball player. Arguably one of the greatest scorers, not arguably, one of the greatest scorers of all time, arguably the greatest individual scoring talent of all time, but with no real connection to any actual NBA market. I think he will have had his MVP year in Oklahoma City, his championship years in Golden State, and then everything else will just be like, “Yeah, and then he bounced around. Was it Brooklyn and then Phoenix or Phoenix and then Brooklyn? And it’ll just be kind of that. But he will retire someday as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. And he’ll be on NBC tonight at 6:30. Rockets Thunder followed by Warriors Lakers. Number two, the 2025 World Series is set. It’s the Dodgers and the Blue Jays. It’s Toronto and LA. It’s time to squabble up. We got our squabble up World Series. Yeah, it I was sad last night. Then I saw a big dumper crying in the locker room. I love it. We’ve had a great season together. Like I just It was sad. I I wanted them to get that. That game was awesome. Awesome. Yeah. Just everything I wanted out of it. When he hit the home run, I was like, it’s it’s over. They are taking this thing. I mean, if you’re Seattle, you’re you’re they got Shane Bieber on the on the mound. Former Sai Young winner in Toronto. Um he’s on the mound. You’re an underdog. You’re on the road. They’ve got the better starting pitcher. They’ve got homefield advantage. They are throughout the season the better team. You’re up against it. Then Julio Rodriguez comes out. Homers. Cali homers. 65th of this season. When you combine the regular season and the postseason, that’s a nice number. That’s a good number to Nobody’s ever done that in the American League. Hit 65 in the same calendar year counting regular season and postseason. So then you’re up 3-1 and you’re deep in this thing. Like it it’s your stars showed up. You got a quality start from George Kirby. This is here. You’re on your way to the World Series for the first time in franchise history. And then George Springer, who was injured earlier in this series, took a fast ball on the knee. And it was unclear if he was going to be able to play game six or game seven. He was limping, but he’s in the box. Two men on. Kyra, let’s watch one of the greatest home runs in postseason history. It happened last night. Wild pitch. High foul ball left field. A rose arena. Where does it go? What an awesome moment. That was crazy. They win it right there. 4-3. That was the final score. And yeah, that Mariners clubhouse was rough, rough, rough. Did you see the video local news that went viral because of a scream in the background? No. So, they’re in the clubhouse Seattle. They’re doing interviews. There’s some I saw somebody tweet that it was it’s Cal Raleigh that you hear. I don’t know that that’s true. He was emotional. He was definitely emotional because he had tears in his eyes. But Kyra, I’ll just let people hear it for the first time. I don’t have to set it up. This is the interview last night in the Seattle clubhouse. Having gone further than any other team in franchise history. Damn. Legacy is just It’s just sometimes you got to get one out. Damn, man. Have you ever done that? Sure. Yes, I have too. Yeah, I do in my car a lot. In my car? I’m a car yeller. Yeah. Just like you get it out and you get frustrated and you just got to get a good yell scream out and that’s what that was last night. Kyra, let’s hear it one more time if we got it. Scared me. If we if we can pull it up more here. I mean K is further than any other team in franchise history. Sounds like someone getting killed. Jeez. It’s tough, man. You don’t I don’t want to say you don’t get over that, but it’s right there. And if you never actually get to where you’re trying to go, you’ll revisit this the rest of your life. And unless you’re like the Dodgers right now, it’s hard to get back. It’s hard to get back. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah. It’s just it’s right there for you. When are you ever gonna have a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh of a game seven ALCS? Hopefully next year, right? But like next year, it’s right there for you. It is You were an underdog when the series started. You were an underdog when this game started, but you’re a favorite in the bottom of the seventh, up two runs. You need nine more outs. Go get them. Dude, there was a moment in the um because the uh second uh Monday Night Football double header was going on and it was Texans at Seahawks and as soon as that because I had them both on simultaneously. As soon as that game ended, you could hear a groan in the crowd cuz that’s a loud stadium uh where the Seahawks play. You could hear like a huge groan and there nothing was happening in the game and it was just like that’s it. They got the news. Oh, it’s just a killer. I don’t I know. I think I’d rather lose it like that than just, you know, lose it 71 after giving up five in the first. Like at least if you’re a Mariners fan, you had a you had a night of emotions. You felt something all night long. Yeah. You know, you were you you Oh man. But to have it ripped away, awesome moment for George Springer, though. Like that’s a great that’s an all-time great baseball moment. Sure. For whatever. He’s won a World Series. Yeah, I know. And not everybody likes him because of where he used to play. I got that. Yeah, he’s part of the cheating team. Oh, speaking of cheating, did you see the thing in the first inning last night with Josh Naylor? Yeah. Yeah. That was wild. That was weird. So, for people who didn’t see it, I didn’t send it to Kyra, so I’ll just tell you about it. But it’s uh a double play ball and Naylor is running first to second and it’s just like a routine double play ball. And he to in an attempt to break up the double play runs and jumps and turns his back backwards and like just takes the throw in the back of the head. They obviously called him out. You can’t be jumping into balls, throwing balls. But like that’s when you know, hey, you do what are you willing to do to win this game tonight, right, buddy? I’ll let a third baseman throw a ball right into my head if that’s what it takes. Fun baseball game last night. It was awesome. Just from start to finish, awesome baseball game, World Series, Dodgers and the Blue Jays. The Dodgers are of course pretty significant favorites. Number three, Monday Night Football, like you said, was last night. We got a double header. I had it on but like was really just locked in on football and uh ba baseball and football stuff was just sort of on but lines beat the Bucks pretty good. Yeah. And then the Bucks lose Mike Evans for the season. Broken collar bone which means his streak of a thousand yard seasons receiving will come to an end. He had done it 11 years in a row. Dude, the first 11 years of his career. The only other person to ever do that first 11 years of your career, at least a thousand receiving yards every year without exception. Only other person ever do it, Jerry Rice. Yeah, it hurt because he he might come back. They say there’s a chance he could come back at the end of the season, but he’s going to be out for a long time. And uh dude, he is like my fantasy hero. He’s like my ride or die this guy. Like ever since, you know, I love fantasy football and I think I’ve had Mike Evans on my team every year since he’s been a rookie on one of my teams. Like I just I love the guy. He’s just one he’s a guy that’s like one of my favorite players in the league that never played for my team, right? Um and so yeah, it’s a bummer. It’s a big bummer. My favorite Mike Evans moment, I think, is when he got the penalty for fighting on the field. Yeah, it was maybe Marshon Latimore when Vladimore was with the Saints and they I think that was it. They had him miked up and he’s pleading with the refs because the refs are like, “Yo, you can’t do that.” And he’s like, “But he hit Tom Brady.” He’s like, “Yo, that’s Tom Brady.” I think it was something like, “Yo, that’s Tom Brady.” Like, I can’t just let this guy hit Tom Brady, right? Like, what do you want me to do? I have to go fight. And the ref was like, “Yeah, I get it.” But like, you still I got to throw the flag. But I just loved it was like Tom Brady commands that type of respect. Like you you you could maybe touch our quarterback, but not Tom Brady. Not Not when Tom Brady’s our quarterback. You don’t get to put your hands on him or we got a fist fight, right? Yeah. So, and it’s sad too like you never see guys stay with the same team like in the NFL that they always leave like towards the end and who knows like he might he’s going to want to try to chase that record like he’s very close. Um and so we’ll see if he comes back for another year. Um we’ll see if it’s with the Bucks or not, but man, yeah, that that sucked to see last night. So, Lions 249 over the Bucks, Seahawks 2719 over the Texans. We’re going to consider that your Monday Night Football recap. Number four, legendary Florida football coach Steve Spurer was asked his thoughts on the Gator coaching vacancy. And he said he believes what the University of Florida is going to do next is hire somebody who has a proven track record of success of winning in the SEC or at the power conference level. The point being that we ain’t hiring no Billy Nap here again, mid- major coach and hope that he can do something that he’s never done before. We’re going to hire somebody we know can win in the SEC. And how do we know they can win in the SEC? Because they’ve already done it. Interesting. And the two names he threw out, okay, Lane Kein. Yeah, we talked about that yesterday. and Eli Drinkitz, the head coach at Missouri, whose team is right now six-1 and ranked 15th in the country. So, if it’s up to Steve Spurer, the Gator next coach will either be the current head coach of your Miss Rebels, which are ranked eighth in the country, or the current head coach of your Missouri Tigers, ranked 15th in the country. kind of surprising because the obvious candidate to me is Alex Gooish at USF because he’s in Florida, you know, he recruits the area. Um, and he’s obviously having an amazing run at USF right now. U, so that’s the one that kind of stood out to me. That would that would be Major Coach. That’s right. Um, you know, I would not be surprised if it’s either one of those guys that he mentioned. I really wouldn’t. I might say Drinkowitz before Kein, but I think Lane would do it. I think there is something to you see these guys now you talked about it yesterday um getting getting ahead of the fan base getting annoyed with them or or are or being out on them now miss they’re having some of the best success ever so like you know how can you argue with that right I feel like this Florida job is going to get a bunch of dudes raises to stay where they’re at that’s a good point I think you’re right I just just like because I know there Miss fans right now, like friends of mine who are miss fans and they want Lane Keifin to come out and say something. Yeah. Definitive. And the truth is it’s just not in Lane’s best interest to do that. Like if I were Lane Keifin, you know what I would say? Nothing. No, nothing. I’d let people wonder. I’d let my bosses wonder. And I mean it is true. He’s going to have less pressure at Old Miss. He just is. Well, of course. Yeah. I mean, if you don’t win at Florida, you will be gone in two or three years. Y and there’s a little more of a grace. there’s just a little more wiggle room in Oxford than there is in Gainesville. Um I don’t know what the right thing for him to do if the job is his. If if he if it’s presented to him, I don’t know that I can tell you what he should do because I’m not him. I could argue it both ways sincerely. I could I could make a compelling argument why you take the Florida job if you’re lane keen and I can make an equally if not more compelling argument of why you negotiate with miss while Florida is pursuing you and use Florida to lock in every great thing you can think to lock in at miss. I can make either argument. It is. This is one of those where it’s very much a a personal decision. Like what Lane Keifin will do either way is not going to be universally applauded. If he stays at Miss, there are going to be some people who say he’s crazy not to take the Florida job. And if he takes the Florida John, there are going to be people who say, “I cannot believe he left Old Miss for Florida with a athletic director on the hot seat and a track record of firing coaches very quickly who don’t win. I can’t believe he took that job.” Whatever he does, there will be people questioning what it is. And that’s because there’s no entirely clearly right answer here. And I don’t think there’s a clearly wrong answer either. It’s a personal decision. What do you want out of your life? what do you want out of your career? But it’s a nice position to find yourself in because he will either be the next coach at Florida for presumably more money than he’s ever made with as good a resources as he’s ever had or he’ll remain the coach at Old Miss for more money and better resources and you’ll get all of those things put into a contract. So, it’s a nice place to be. Um, but I imagine on some level it’s also stressful because I I I I bet you it’s not clear in his mind, right? I bet it’s not clear in his mind exactly what the right thing to do here is, what the accurate thing to do here is, but Steve Spurer has him on the target list along with the Missouri coach, the Gator legend. He wants him to hire from a fellow SEC member. Number five, TMZ is reporting this morning that the president of the United States is contemplating commuting the sentence of Shawn Dolmes later this week. Just to get out ahead of it, the White House is denying this report. We had to get an official statement from the White House. We did. Okay. But TMC is saying, “We stand by our report. It’s true. We know that he is considering commuting the sentence of Shan Combmes.” How do you think that would be received publicly? Would that be popular or unpopular? Uh, I mean, it didn’t it kind of seem like that the sentence was light to be anyways? It depends on how you register all of this stuff there. Like the internet’s not a real place. Yeah. But that is where I read most of the things that that I read. And when he was as the trial was unfolding, there were people who were like, “Yeah, daddy’s a horrible person and has done some horrible things, but are we really trying to send this guy into prison for the rest of his life because uh you know, he’s got some kinks?” Mhm. Because he was not on trial for domestic violence. He was not on trial for a lot of the awful things we know he did. He it it’s to some people it felt very much like you couldn’t get O.J day for murder. So you get him for some memorabilia stuff and then you just really that’s how you put him in prison like we and this felt to some people this felt like that like all right this guy probably should be in prison but for this so for this so how that opinion was out there whether you agree with it or not. So how do I think it will be received? Um I think it just depends on which corner of the internet you hang out in. Yeah that’s probably right. Like if you hanging out on Twitter, it’s probably going to be a big good day. Everybody’s going to be excited. Um I don’t I don’t know. Uh I just I don’t it just I don’t know. I think bad people who do bad things and are convicted of them should be in jail. It just felt to me like the Senate from from everything that we thought we knew for a long time with this whole Diddy thing, it seems like that the sentence was pretty light and maybe let’s just uh let’s just uh ride it out and be done with it. I guess I I guess I if I were advising the president on this, I would I would try to get him while acknowledging up front he gonna do whatever he wants to do and say whatever he wants to say. Nobody’s got any control over that. But if I had access to him, I would be like, “What do you think the win is here? What are you going for here?” I mean, I think it would be popular because people just love celebrities. I I don’t think everybody would condemn it, but what’s the win? Who would applaud it? Who wants Diddy out of prison? Yeah. I don’t know if there’s some big movement going on like who like I I mean I there is a free Diddy thing out there but like who actually is like it is a shame that Diddy is sitting in prison. Who is actually who holds that opinion? I don’t know if it’s like this. Yeah, I don’t know if it’s What is the win here? I’m not sure. But he just let George Santos out of jail, you know, the other day. And what’s and who wanted him out of jail? Fair enough. Fair enough. Okay. Except the message there could just be like, uh, you know, if you’re loyal to me, I don’t really care what you do. Oh, that’s fair. And if you get caught and you get convicted and you get sent to prison, just know just know I I got the power to get you out of that thing. So, you know, you might be okay. Yeah. With the Santos thing, there was like an actual usable message to be sent to the world. M like I have the power and I’m not afraid to use it. And so if you’re loyal to me, I can maybe help you get out of some bad. There’s a message there that can be useful. I don’t know what the useful message would be with Diddy. Like what do you win doing this? Like I don’t I don’t think people like his kids apparently want him out of prison, but I don’t know many other people who do. I’d advise against it. I would advise against it. But you know what? Trying to focus on this new way of life. It’s none of my business. Yeah, that’s right. It’s none of my business. That’s right. Diddy being in prison or out of prison is is probably going to have no impact on my life whatsoever. I don’t think it will. And uh so that’s the way I’m going to view that. Okay. I I do not care, but I would advise against it. Okay. Be back with Kara. Sonic Radio. Welcome back to Sonic R&D. That spells radio with me, the CIO. This just in. One final segment filled with stuff to take with you. It’s not everything you need to know, but it’s most of it. What did we miss today? So, you see the story with Cam Jones, the ECS graduate who of course played at Marquette, was a star at Marquette and was drafted by the Indiana Pacers. He’s our latest Memphian in the NBA. Yep. You see the sword? I did. You know what? So, he got arrested for reckless driving. Reckless drive. Now, what tells me everything I need to know is Rick Carile’s comments today. He was like, “This is a good kid.” Like, he made a mistake here, but we know he’s a good guy. And by all accounts, he is a good dude. Like, he just messed up. That is my understanding of him for sure. whether you talk to people who knew him from here in Memphis or talk to Shaka about him. Um Cam Jones is an impressive young man. And so you see this yesterday and it’s like what in the world because the first thing you hear is arrested while driving and police officer was like you in a hurry? I was like no. And I was like, he’s like, you know, you were you moving? I I just like I was like, what what what have I clocked at? It was 101. I think I was driving 101 and I had no idea. The car had just gotten away from me. I was like trying to turn on a podcast driving 100 miles an hour. It’s crazy, right? So, and then like I I realized like I could have been taken a jail for this. Yeah. I like I was fortunate. Um, so he flies by a cop going 90 and you see the mug shot and you start trying to maybe piece some things together and it’s like it’s not a great picture. But his explanation is I was literally just late for class. I’m late for practice and I was trying to hurry up and get there. I didn’t want to be late for practice. I think some people have pointed to his social media and he had made a post from the night before. If I were being the detective on this thing, here’s what I would think happened. He was up a little too late on Sunday night, slept a little too late on Monday morning, and then woke up groggy-headed a little bit the way you might be. And was like, “Oh, damn. I’ve got to get to practice.” And then now you got blue lights, and now you got a mug shot. And it probably is nothing more than that, but still not the type of story you want attached to your name. No. Because by the time we even get to Rick Carile’s comments, how about this? I didn’t even know them. I hadn’t heard those. Most people, to the extent they’re aware of the story, they just know the mug shot and the headline. They don’t even know the context or that the coach was like, “This is not a big deal. This is not a bad guy. These charges will probably get dismissed or dropped or lightened or he’ll go through some program and this is not a this is not this is not the NBA story that so many franchises are filled for this is literally a guy you ever been late to work? Yes sir. You ever been driving a little too fast while you were late for work? Man, it’s I’m having PTSD thinking about it. That’s what he was doing. That’s what he was doing yesterday morning. That’s more or less what Rick Carlile apparently said. And I think that’s probably the truth. But uh not great. Not great. Hopefully this a just a a blip but the start of an otherwise awesome career. What’s today’s biggest game? Let’s go with the first one. Rockets Thunder. Okay. First NBA game of the season. Oklahoma City raising a banner. 6:30 NBC Thunder 7 and a half point favorites. Total 226.5. How you going to act? I wish I would have gotten the statistics for um how often a team that is having the ring ceremony has a let down in the opener. I want to say it’s happened a couple times at least. I feel like it’s something that we talk about sometimes. There is certainly the perception whether it’s backed by actual data or not. There is a perception that that experience takes something out of you. Yeah. Do we What’s the Let me Hang on. I’m pulling up the injury report real quick. Uh yeah, Jaylen Williams is out. Yeah, Jaylen Williams is out. Yeah, I’m going Rockets with the biggest lineup of all time. Are you kidding me? They can’t cover seven and a half. But here’s the thing. The Thunder are pretty big themselves. I mean, this is the biggest lineup of all time with Kevin Durant and Stephen Adams. Ever heard of him? Like, come on. I have heard of Steven Adams, but you know, you go Chad and Isaiah in the front. There two sevenfooters. Bro, Steven Adams is going to put Chet in the third row. Are you joking? What are we talking about? I didn’t think I was joking. I might have been joking, though. Steven Adams is about to put Chad in the third row. Well, come on. Then it said give him the seven and a half points. Give it. He wants KD in seven and a half. Rockets. Okay, then it said take Houston plus the seven and a half. Tip is scheduled 6:30. We’re on NBC. What are we watching on TV? All right. Have you watched The Perfect Neighbor yet on Netflix? I have not, but I know the story, buddy. Yeah, I know. It’s probably one of the reasons because I’ve heard it’s really good, but it’s one of the reasons that I haven’t started it yet because the story like is disturbing. It’s awful. I hate it. The the documentary is great. I mean, great. And I was telling Matt Nlander about it on the Island College basketball podcast yesterday because we just got talking like this, too. you you won’t know it’s great as you’re watching it because it’s an unusual documentary in the sense that it’s an hour 40 minutes. That’s not unusual, but it’s almost completely police body camera footage for an hour and 40 minutes. It’s almost nothing but body camera footage. you have no real built, you don’t like there’s no like, hey, here’s these characters. Here’s who they are. Here’s what they do. Here’s why you’re watching this. It’s just like you’re watching body cam footage, which might not be as striking for some today as it would have been in a different time. Because with social media, like all I do is watch body cam footage, right? I just I just lay in bed and watch body cam footage, fights, and arrest and all sorts of stuff. So, you’re just sort of watching the body cam footage and you get the sense of what’s going on here. It’s a a neighborhood slash community. I didn’t look it up, but seems like maybe a lower middle class or lowincome community, but like lots of families, lots of kids, right? And it’s just honestly it reminded me of like the neighborhood I grew up in. just kids outside everywhere throwing footballs and baseballs and playing tag and whatever. Like that’s the way I grew up. We were outside every day. Now I don’t know that kids are outside every day. Like my kids aren’t outside every day. Um and I don’t see kids outside every day, but in this little neighborhood, like kids outside every day. Well, this one old ass white lady moves in. They literally call her Karen. The kids do. The kids are like, “Oh, Karen down there.” Like cuz she’s the face of Karen. Yep. and she’s just giving them hell. Uh she happens to live on a lot where like there’s a h her house and then there’s another house over here and then there’s like a lot in but like a nice piece of grass. Yep. And this is where the kids play football and stuff, right? And she is convinced like this is her yard and they shouldn’t be in it. And they’re like this is the place we’ve been playing football our whole lives and nobody’s ever cared. Why are you calling the cops on us every day? She calls the cops. 911. What’s your emergency? Well, there’s some kids outside and they’re on my property and they’re being too loud. She just starts and I won’t tell you any more than this. Like, that’s the setup. You’re just watching it and it’s just body cam footage and you’re like, “Okay, I guess this is interesting. I’m just watching it and then it just you you look you’re I’m talking about it’s not for everybody but if you want to feel something and the something you will feel I hope is anger sadness too this documentary will make you feel something and I won’t tell you any more about it. Yeah. I don’t say anything where it goes. But there is one moment where I don’t know how you can get through it without crying. M like we were watching it and I looked over uh we watched it Saturday night and I looked over at my wife at this one moment where this kid says I’ll just tell you what he says exactly with no context. He just says, “My heart is broken.” And when those words came out of his mouth, I’m not talking about tearing up. I’m talking about Yeah. We were both just covered in tears. Yeah. I cuz I know what happens. I know the story and so and it’s just I can’t imagine just really unusually done and done extremely well. Like when we get to the Oscars and they’re going like best document like this is going to be nominated. This might win. It’s really well done and touches on a what is a very serious issue in this country, specifically in the state of Florida, which is where all of this happened. So, I can’t recommend it enough. I think at this point a lot of people have seen it. It’s been number one. It’s been the number one movie at Netflix for the past few days, but it just came out last week. I watched it this weekend. It’s starting to get a lot of attention. Um, it can be a hard watch parts of it because it gets intense. Um, and yeah, you you know, if you can get through it without shedding tears, congratulations. I couldn’t. Nobody I know could. Um, but it’s it’s worth your time. It’s it’s it’s worth your time. Uh, The Perfect Neighbor, it’s on Netflix right now. What’s the best thing we’ve read over at cbsports.com on the homepage just like he does every Tuesday. Pete Prrisco has updated his NFL power rankings. Do you know who he has number one now in the NFL power rankings? I’m going to say the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions are number four. I’m going to say the Kansas City Chiefs are number two at 4 and three. I’m going to say the uh it’s not the Packers. The Packers are number three. You’re all around it. You’ve got two, three, and four. God, who am I missing? Um, the It’s not the Bills because they lost to the Patriots. The Bills are down at number 10. It is the Let me get my Let me get my teams pulled up. Oh, it’s the um Is it a Is it one that’s going to surprise me? Is it one that’s going to surprise you? Well, might not surprise you, but it if I would have said this to you one year ago, you’d have been like, “That’s the craziest thing you’ve ever said, GP.” It is the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts? Yeah. with starting quarterback Daniel Jones are the number one team in the NFL according to Prisca. They’re awesome and he has been awesome. How does this happen, man? He’s in year seven. That is a Listen, he’s in nothing in the grand for six years in New York, goes to Indianapolis, and now he’s like the best quarterback in the world. They’ve had down years recently, and obviously there was all the Jim Ers stuff, but like that has been a pretty well-run franchise. Like that’s they sneaky like can get these because they don’t like they besides Andrew Luck and Pton Manning like it’s kind of plugandplay with quarterbacks there, right? And it didn’t work out with Anthony Richardson, but they have a track record of bringing guys in like NFL veterans and having a lot of success with them. And clearly they’re doing it with Daniel Jones, the best he’s played in his whole career. Well, you you just look around the league now and it’s it’s it’s former first round draft picks who washed out at the place that spent a first round pick on them but have revamped their careers somewhere else. Also, Jonathan Taylor’s the best running back in the NFL right now. Um, like at some point if you’re an NFL franchise, do you just sort of like not make it a policy, but like, hey, let’s let’s zero in on former first round quarterbacks who just haven’t been very good for whatever reason. because we have evidence that these guys with a change of scenery, perhaps a change of direction, perhaps just all sorts of things, they can pop late. Yeah. Baker Mayfield has done it. Daniel Jones has done it. There’s other examples throughout the NFL. Sam Darnold in Seattle. Yeah. Yes. It’s like just we we have gotten into a habit as people who follow the NFL of all these quarterbacks go in the first round. We we yell that they need to play immediately. They do. They stink. And then the franchise gives up who have been in the league multiple years but didn’t work out at the place where they were. And now that place is thinking about moving on. All right, we’ll take him. We’ll take him and we’ll turn him into the next Baker Mayfield, the next Sam Darnold, or as the Colts have done, the next Daniel Jones. You can read Pete Prriscoll’s power rankings on the homepage, cbsports.com. What’s on tap for tomorrow? Well, tomorrow is Wednesday. Big day. Here we go. It’s the Grizzlies home opener inside FedEx Forum. The Pelicans are in town. The stupid little Pelicans. I’m ready. I’m ready. I’m very excited. Okay. I’m not going to be here. I’m going to Kansas City. Okay. I’m going to Travis and Patrick’s steakhouse. Nice. And then I’m going to Big 12 media day tomorrow. But I will host the show from Kansas City tomorrow in advance of the Grizzlies home opener. I wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s right. I wouldn’t have it any other way. So, I’m going to uh get out of here and I’m going to catch a flight to Atlanta and then Atlanta to Kansas City cuz you know when you live in Memphis, sometimes you got to go east to go west. Sometimes you got to go east to go west. So, I’m going to go to Atlanta. I’m hang out there for a minute. Then I’m going go to Kansas City and check out Patrick and Travis’s place. Then I’m gonna go to Big 12 Media Day tomorrow. But before I go to Big 12 Media Day tomorrow, we’re going to do the Gary Parish Show. Let’s go. Let’s go. So, enjoy the rest of your day. I’ll try to enjoy mine. And then we’ll meet back here tomorrow at 10. Till then, be careful, be kind, be good, rep your hood.
