Travis Hunter Usage, Sack Numbers & More Hot Takes | Jags A.M. | Jacksonville Jaguars
[Music] Welcome into Jags. AM Pani Stevens here with you. Brian Sex and John Oer as well. We’re coming to you on a Tuesday after we traveled back from the game in London at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It was a tough one to watch right out of the gate. So, we’re going to get into our big things brought to you by GAA, Government Employees Health Association benefits for federal employees and retirees. So, big thing number one is question mark. What did we see out there exactly? We thought we were going to get a competitive game. Liam Cohen going up against his former employers and the Rams and we saw nothing of this sort. Liam, talk a little bit about the slow start. Just like everybody else in that in there, you know, you got to look inward first. Like, what am I doing as the head football coach that’s not clear right now? How am I communicating these things? How am I and how are we practicing these things? Um, that’s what I’ve got to look at, right? I mean, I’ve got to look at the whole thing ultimately, but um not going to stand up here and blame these players. It starts with me. Brian, coach pointing the finger at himself. His team didn’t look prepared to start that game. No. Uh, you know, I was on a commercial flight from London to Jacksonville yesterday and surrounded by Jaguars fans. And I feel compelled to say this, they all have a lot of confidence in the coach. What they saw the first four weeks is what they believe this team is. Despite the fact, John, in the last two weeks, we have seen what 23 penalties, 14 sacks, no takeaways, only three touchdowns. There is a belief level in what he just did there in that soundbite, which was to put it back on himself and suggest that he and his staff have to do things to get it solved. I’m not exactly sure what the right move is when it was mistake after mistake and penalty after penalty that cost them. But at least this coach is somebody who understands that it starts with him. Yeah. Look, I I think we’re seeing that the Seahawks game was a game against a very good team. So, first six weeks, fine. Uh, look, sometimes coaches in the next day press conference sort of meander through and you don’t really know what they’re getting at. Liam on Monday was very clear and I think when you look at this game, he couldn’t be more right. They were in third or second and long the first three drives. They have got to stay in manageable situations and they can’t be making mistakes to put themselves behind sticks early in games. To me, we’re going to talk for two weeks about what’s wrong. Uh they have to stop making mistakes so they can find out if they’re any good or not. And I think they are good when they don’t put themselves in these situations. Well, and Kai, this morning they’re sitting in a position in the seventh spot in the AFC despite these last two losses that leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. You know, they’re tied for the fourth best record in in football. And at 4-3, they’re one spot ahead of Kansas City. They’d be in if the season ended today. It doesn’t, but they’re in a good spot at least to use these two weeks wisely and get back to where they were playing by the time they take the field in Vegas on November 2nd. Yes, it’s good to remember that starting the season, we knew this tough part of the schedule was going to be that first part. And for them to be four and three is impressive at this point. Let’s go to big thing number two. We’re going to be a little more positive here. Exclamation point. Travis Hunter gets his first career touchdown. A little bit of a coming out party as they kind of forced it to him a little bit more on offense this week. We didn’t see a ton of him on defense though, John. But I have to imagine after what we’ve seen from Travis Hunter, he has to be more of the offensive game plan going forward. Yeah, I think he does. And I’m getting questions. I’m sure you guys are. Why don’t they just play him all the time, both sides of the ball and go, “Well, I think as a coaching staff, you’re not only looking at this week, you’re trying to figure out how to grow him and how to get him there uh in the best way possible. Uh it’s easy for him on defense. He’s really good no matter what situation you put him in. Uh I don’t think you’re going to see him playing 95% of the snaps on both sides of the ball. Uh and the challenge remains, Brian, they sort of still have to hold him back. He would go out there and do anything they asked him to do. You got to protect him, but um he’s going to play more offensively. I don’t know what that means in terms of the offense running through him, but he’s got to have the ball in his hand. Uh he’s a dynamic player as we’ve seen all season long and he’s just I don’t know. He’s one of those guys that he makes things happen no matter what you’re asking him to do. Um I I I think he’s your best defensive back. He might be your best defensive player right now based on his production. The footwork on that third down play, Kai, that I know that you referenced in in quick thoughts was spectacular. And the timing when the ball got into the hands of Dvonte Adams, he was right there. And then you just see that there’s defenders all around him. And yet, if the ball is put where he can make a play, he does. I I think right now he’s your best player on offense and your best player on defense. One man’s opinion, um, figure out how to make that work. You know, how much he can sustain because like you were talking about, John, it’s a long season and you can’t play 95% of the snaps every game and expect he’s going to be on the field when the season comes to a close. I just I don’t think you can do that to him. But, man, there’s a balance there somewhere. smarter people than me will find it and I can’t wait to see it. Our final big thing today is going to be period. Now, not everything is wrong, but a lot of things do need to be fixed. One of those is penalties. They had 13 penalties against the Rams, which isn’t going to cut it by any means. And then also just, you know, the sacks allowed in that game. They allowed seven sacks for the second straight week. Also, the offensive line um and the defensive line failing to get to the Matt Stafford at all. So, Brian, there’s a lot of stuff that needs to be worked on. What’s your focus going into the bye-week? Well, listen. So, the offensive line has given up 14 sacks the last two weeks. Um, that that I’ve I’ve got to start there. Uh, Patrick Mccari had three of the 13 penalties, two for being illegally downfield on screen plays. I mean, that’s inexcusable for a veteran guard who comes from a really disciplined place in Baltimore and is doing that. Um, you’re getting Wyatt Milm back. Okay, throw the competition open. Let’s throw Wyatt Milm in there and see if he upgrades the spot. I know he’s a rookie and he hasn’t really played yet, but you’re reaching a point where you got to make something different in that group because the last two weeks have really been difficult to watch. I’m not so concerned about I don’t think these are bad offensive and defensive lines. Uh if they play in their situation, meaning you’re down 14 nothing, 21 nothing the other day. Uh you’re not going to get very many sacks when you’re down that big to start. you’re going to give up a lot of sacks because guess what? The other team knows you need to pass. Uh I’m going to harp on it until they play again because I know it, you know, Liam’s going to harp on it and it’s what’s wrong. You have to start better. You can’t keep being down seven nothing, 10 nothing. And when you’re in in small situations, um at the beginning of the game, you can’t first and 10 can’t be second and 13 because of a sack you shouldn’t have given up. First and 10 can’t be second and 15 because you’re given penalties. You cannot be against the chains early in the game the way this team has the last two weeks. Stay with us here on Jags AM. I don’t want to call it highlights because there wasn’t a ton of those in the game. Um, but we will look at some moments and maybe some things that we can glean from what we saw go down. So, I will start out with the first play of the game because when I say I don’t think they were ready to go from the first snap, this was kind of a tough one to immediately take a sack right there. And I think Trevor even said in his postgame press conference, he’s like, “Yeah, I saw Travis right there and I should have just thrown him the ball.” Second straight week starting the game on the first play with a three-y loss on a sack. Yeah, it um you wonder if you’re you’re right out of the gate there was a defender maybe drifting that way. He just doesn’t want to take any chance on the first uh play regardless. Um you can’t put yourself behind the sticks that early cuz all of a sudden it it seemed like from that point on you were trying to walk uphill on a snowy hill. Yeah. And I don’t like the idea of not taking any chances. I mean, this game and especially this coach is all about taking chances. You you’ve got to get the quarterback fire the ball um and take some chances. Um we’ll move it forward a little bit because I think the Rams got after it quite quickly and uh before we knew it was 7 nothing, 14 nothing, 21 nothing. But Dvonte Adams, you know, three touchdowns on the day with just whoever was covering him at any given moment. And this is part of my frustration without seeing Travis Hunter out there because when you’re focusing more on offense, he didn’t play on defense until the third quarter and by then it almost felt out of hand, right? So yes, he’s at this point your best offensive player, but he’s still your best quarterback. So, it’s getting to a point where, you know, it would have been also we just we’ll talk about the past breakup, but it was tough with seeing what the secondary was trying to deal with here and then just some regression from from Dwey hasn’t been playing great the last two weeks and just some miscommunications. It was tough to see from the defense, John, from um just right out of the gate. Yeah, look, I think same thing on that side of the ball. You you uh you can’t get down to good teams. The Jaguars aren’t good enough yet to play from behind and play well because when good teams are up on you, they can do whatever they want and their situations add up to better situations than yours. So again, I think it goes back to the very beginning. They’re a good team. They can win in situations. The Jaguars don’t have multiple ways to win. They have to be in the game and they have to have situations favoring them. when it’s not, they are going to be exposed to what other teams can do when they want to do it in manageable situations. What you’re what you’re getting to is that there’s a formula for the Jaguars to win. They got to run the ball. There’s not a bunch. This team has one, right? I mean, you Well, it’s in the first Yeah. It’s getting going. As you mature as a franchise and a regime, you get more waves. Right now, this is their way. McD’s been there for seven years, right? I mean, he’s had two quarterbacks and countless players on both sides of the ball. He’s got many, many formulas. He showed us one on Sunday. No puka, no problem. We’ll go to this guy 17 who we picked up from the Jets this year and it will work. The Jaguars formula is very simple. Even though you’ve got a $54 million a year quarterback, you got to run the ball. You got to stay ahead of the chains. If you’re second and 13, well, the last two weeks show us that when the Jaguars start second and 13 on the second play of the game, they’re 0 and2. You can’t do that. You have to run the ball. You have to stay ahead of the chains. You got to get an early lead so that the defense can play the style that they want to play or at least you have to be even with them, right? Or within seven points of them. You can’t be down 14 to nothing because what John was saying is so true. Then you can’t attack like they want to attack. Then you’re you’re on your heels. So there’s one formula right now. There will be more, but right now you played a one formula. Rams first four drives, they only faced third and long once. It was the only time they punted. Yeah. You got to get into it. Um, another tiny little spark they almost had was Parker Washington’s kick return. And then again with the penalties, obviously we’re harping on the same sorts of things. And you can call it ticky tacky if you want, but also just being in that vicinity. Parker was basically already by him. I don’t know why that’s jarring’s in that position at that point, but it’s so frustrating when you finally feel like you have maybe a little tiny bit of life and then you just see the yellow laundry that and that makes it a completely different game. Right. You’re 147 there. you got a little momentum instead. By the way, that would have set a Jaguars record for the third career punt return by a Jaguar. He shares the record with two right now. So, I was sad to see that one go. Uh, but on that drive, the Jags missed the field goal and you could just you could just feel it. Matt Stafford’s like, “Oh, got him. What? You the penalty takes a touchdown off the board and then you miss a field goal. Let’s put this game away right now.” And of course, veteran savvy quarterback that he is right down the field. Touchdown. 21 nothing. Thank you. Yeah, in I’m going to go way back in the 1940 NFL Championship game. Uhhuh. Washington lost 73 nothing. The Redskins at the time uh they dropped a touchdown pass would have made it 7-7. They asked the quarterback afterwards, Sammy Ba, would that have made a difference in the game? He said, “Yeah, I would have been 73 to seven.” Now, maybe that would Jaguars fans are thinking that with this game. I don’t think that applies. Um it would have gotten you back into where you weren’t playing uphill the whole first half and it felt like such a first a uphill game the whole game. Um I my dad used to talk about when we watch Washington together and there’d be a weird call he goes well that wasn’t much of a call. The Parker one sort of felt like well that wasn’t much of a call. I don’t know. I don’t know that they win the game if he scores that one but you have a different game. You don’t look doubt, you don’t look like the Keystone Cops, like you got pushed all over the field by the Rams all day if you’re 14-7. Because let’s be honest, down 14 nothing, the Jaguars had very little energy. It would have gotten over. It felt over. It felt like last year where they get down early and you were like, “Oh, well, it felt like the Bears game at Tottenham last year. Like, what is this?” So now you get to 147. Again, the Rams are a better football team and they have a quarterback playing at a higher level than your quarterback is right now. And so as a result of that, I don’t think they win, but I think you have a different game going into the third quarter. A lot of situations felt out of their control after that. Yeah. Mentioned it. Cam Little misses a kick here. And Liam Cohen, it came out yesterday says they’re Cam’s their guy. They’re not doing anything in regards to that. But this is getting problematic at this point. I think fourth missed field goal. He’s missed an extra point. Like, and it’s affecting for me, it’s affecting the way Liam calls the game going forward. Listen, Go ahead, John. No, it it is. Um, I don’t necessarily, we’ve reached this point where you expect every kicker to make every field goal. 50 yards is makeable. It’s also not a gimme. He’s missed two 50 yarders. Um, I agree with the idea of let’s support. We’re going to move forward. This kid’s been too good for so long. Uh, but he would tell you in his mind in this league right now, 50 yarders can’t be hold your breath. You have to sort of think he’s going to make them right now. I think most people when they watch it are thinking are sort of holding their breath. He’s got to get past that. I’m with the coach on on his approach to I’m sticking with him. He’s my guy. He’s way he’s insanely talented. We’ve seen this. He’s in a bad spot. That wouldn’t stop me from bringing in another kicker, though. Whether it’s on the practice squad or whether I find a spot for the guy and and and work him in because maybe what Cam needs is that edge, that competition. He’s got a little edge to him. It’s kind of fun. And I think he’s one of those kickers that enjoys that side of it. He needs it right now. And I would I would be very willing to bring a kicker in here and make him go at it on the practice field. It is funny with kickers though. It may have been the Seattle game last night. I forget what, but somebody missed a 58 yard or barely made it. It was the Lions game and they’re on the sidelines just oh my god, I could I can’t believe I missed a 58 yard. 58 yards is still a long way to kick it. I mean, there was a time when you got to get a 48 yard. You’d be like, how’d you miss a 48 yard? Now we’re talking about missing a 50 hit from 58 once and I thought you were going to go out of your mind. 59. Yeah. And I did go out of my mind. Y um let’s take one look at this. Um we seen Travis Hunter’s touch on already, but let’s look at this pass break up he had against Stvante Adams because for me this was also a defining play for him because we hadn’t seen him on defense yet. Coming out of the half, they’re not looking great. and then to come in and go up against their best wide receiver and break this up when it looked like he was nowhere near it as well is is why kind of comes out and then you’re like, “Oh, he’s still got it on the back end there.” I would point out to people to right here, watch his footwork. You want to know what makes a superior corner. It’s a guy with footwork like that. He puts himself in a position to trail and then recover and then go up and make an incredible play. That’s a big receiver. Now, Dvonte Adams is not 6 feet. He’s 6’2. He’s a big dude. and and just because Travis has such exceptional footwork and ball skills working together that that’s to me that’s the sum of it. The guy has got incredible skills. Yeah. I’m not saying this to diminish how hard he works cuz he works hard. He does this falling out of bed in the morning. I mean he that’s what’s remarkable about it. Yeah. He’s that good. Uh what’s funny is this was a great play and it should not have been defensive pass interference, but he made more contact here than he did in Cincinnati, right? And that one was called one. And they were both great uh plays, but I just make the point to show you he gets his body in in situations that um I I still think the Cincinnati was because the ref couldn’t believe he made the play and that it was so smooth. And he’s that good when he does that. And uh yeah, he’s starting to show how special he’s going to be. This is how many games we are in. I’m I’m holding it up just for the seven games into his show that in two hands we can show how many games he’s played. If you’re just patient with him and with the Jaguars as they figure out that he’s going to have a long and productive and maybe illustrious career in Jacksonville over the course of games that toes and fingers all of us won’t be able to count. All right, after the break, we’re going to come back and give you our hot takes for the rest of the season. We uh saw a not so great product the past two weeks, but it is important to remember the team is four and three, and if you told me that a couple months ago, I would have been thrilled. I think I was happy. I was hopeful if we were going to get three and four out of that first little stretch of games by the bye-week. So, um, looking back on this game on Sunday and kind of looking forward, what is your hot take for us, Brian? Help is not on the way. Uh, and by that I mean that you you got to figure this out with the guys that you’ve got in that locker room. Yes, I know they went and they traded for Greg Newsome and they may swing another trade before the trade deadline comes up in two weeks. But it’s the guys who are in the locker room right now that you have to figure things out. I mentioned earlier that here’s one play. They’re very high on Wyatt Milm, the third round pick, the former tackle who they think is a guard at the NFL level and and he’s ready to play perhaps over the course of the by-week and maybe you can plug him in there at right guard. They really think he is a tremendous player and could be one of their best offensive linemen by the end of the year. Okay. Well, there’s a little help who’s here on the roster. Uh I give you an example of where help’s not coming. You’re not getting Caleb Brandsaw back, right? You have problems at safety right now. Eric Murray is dinged up. Dwey is not playing very well and you can’t go to the the third round pick that you really wanted to bring in. So you you’ve got to take what you’ve got and figure it out. And and that’s what the coach said postgame on Sunday night at Wembley Stadium. It’s what he said yesterday uh in his news conference. You got to take what you got because you’re not bringing in wholesale replacements to change things. Yeah. You’re talking you’re going down the laundry list of what happens in the first year of a regime when you come in. they they have a lot of their guys in situ in good situations. They don’t have a mature uh a Gladstone has developed all these spots and they’ve developed all these players. So, they need to stay healthy and uh I think it’s what you’re talking about. Um figure out how to win some situations with the guys you got until you start getting a roster of depth. And the best the third example of that is Brentton Strange. Yeah. Yeah, you’ve got Hunter Long and Johnny Munt and neither one of those guys, both of them combined don’t give you what Bretton Strange does, let alone each one in parts and pieces. You’re not going to go find a player who can do what Brett and Strange does for you. So, you got to figure out something else until you get it back. Yeah. I went I’m a man of pros, you know, I’m a poet at heart, so I went with 14 and none won’t get it done. See, that’s it. um little aliteration and you know 14 sacks and then no sacks on defense. Uh that can’t happen. And again I go back to the reason it’s happening is not because this team isn’t capable of having better numbers on both sides, but you cannot play games where it is so hard to get sacks because you’re so far down or it’s so easy to give up sacks when you’re in such bad situations. They have to play smart and they have to get themselves in a situation again where they find out if they can be a more functioning team than they already are. Uh you’re probably not going to blow a lot of teams out and you’re probably not going to have a lot of 21 point comebacks. You have to stay above your feet in these games and figure out a way to be in the situations where you can succeed. Well, uh they did it against Kansas City because they were pretty good on third down that night and no penalties or four. Yeah, four penalties. And so they were in a position where they could play and and come back down 14- nothing to take the lead and then eventually win the ball game. But what you’re saying is what we talked about earlier. There’s a formula. And the formula is you got to have sacks. You’ve got to have sacks and you have got to protect your quarterback. And the formula is not being played right now. It’s not good. But I did like the rhyme, John. Appreciated it. Thank you. Um mine is about Travis Hunter because I think it is time to see what we’ve got in the sense of I know they’re working through playing time. It seems to be changing week by week, but after seeing that play against Devonte Adams, for me, I think he needs to be on defense as much as physically possible. And I still think he should be a focus on offense. I also haven’t seen a point yet where he’s been winded and wanting to come out of a game. So, I think it’s time to start pushing those numbers up on both sides in the game and seeing once you reach that limit. You haven’t seen it yet. And I think at this point, he’s your best player at times on defense and he is definitely your best player on offense right now. And I think we need to see him in that role. That’s the role they want him to be in. They told talked about him changing the game and now now needs to be the time to do that. I think especially at the bye-week he’s gotten through a chunk of the season already. You don’t necessarily have to worry about the burnout as much. Now’s the time. Yeah. I think what’s going to be interesting here, Brian, is finding out if he’s look, he was dynamic on offense the other day. Um, is he a player? And I don’t know the answer to this. Um, can he be your one? Meaning, uh, does he know enough about all the receiver positions where you can say he is your one, he’s going to draw double coverage, that’s going to open up things for, uh, for other players or is he more situationally at wide receiver? Um, he’s really, really good. you know, and what you’ve seen at receiver is that there’s a point in the future, uh, I don’t know how quick they get there, where he is going to have to be accounted for defensively and you’re going to be able to design your game plan on they have to cover Travis over here. Now, here’s what we can do based off that. I I think the head coach has told us repeatedly since training camp that it was going to be a process for him to figure out all three positions. I don’t think there’s any way, it’s not fair to expect that he could come in here and know more than the one position. To know three right now would be ridiculous. Um, he will get there though and eventually, as you just said, he he’s going to be that guy. Uh, but right now, so naturally on defense. I mean, I just I don’t know how you take a player with those skills at a position of such great need and not play. Just put them out there on their best guy. Let him play football. Uh, stay with us after the break. We’ll tell you what’s coming up the rest of the week here for the bye-week. [Music] It’s game time, Jaguars fans. We’re really growing together and um we’re getting better. Um, but today I feel like we had to step back and as a leader I feel like that that’s that’s definitely one of me being a a key part in that. But I let the guys know that I let them down. Um, and they appreciated me. Um, but like I said, man, I really do love them and um, we going to get better and I know I know I’ve I’ve been through my fair share of adversity. So, um, I think we can we can get through this. Tough day for the defense as well. We talk a lot about the offense. defense had a tough one and Jordan Lewis probably uncharacteristically bad game for him. Um, this defense has looked a lot different when they haven’t been getting the takeaways and I think that’s something that is going to have to be addressed in the bye-week. Well, and we talked about it hasn’t looked the same without Trayvon Walker. Yeah, and again, I’m just a big fan of Trayvon obviously. Uh, he got hurt against San Francisco. Uh, the defense has not looked the same and when he went out of that game is when they started to get back into it. Yeah. So, um, this team, you can say all you want about not talking about injuries and you have to have depth. There are certain guys this team needs on the field. I think Trayvon’s he and Brett and Strange are two guys. Absolutely. I I just want to throw this in one more time. I I I being on that flight on the commercial flight home out of London. There were so many Jaguars fans who had such a good time. I mean, they they hated that the team lost, but they enjoyed the game at Wembley Stadium. They enjoyed London. They enjoyed the whole spectacle of it. So, um, it was fun to listen to them talk and I didn’t hear a lot of same old Jags. I heard a lot of how’s Liam going to fix it. Sure. So, I I just I that was a a fun vibe to be around yesterday. There were a lot of energetic people who believe that this team is different. It’s hard to say it when they get beat like that in London, right? A year after they got beat like that by the Bears. Uh, it’s hard to bear that out, but people kind of understand it. They kind of see that things are starting to change, albeit slower than they’d like. some trust and some understanding that the problems will be addressed. Some belief in Tony Belli, James Gladstone, and Liam Cohen. We’ve we’ve heard it. We’ve kind of felt it. Uh yesterday was like a 9-hour focus group uh on the back of a Virgin Airlines on the way from from Heathrow to Atlanta. So, um the feedback was pretty optimistic. Here’s hoping. Um we’re going to be with you once more this week. Tomorrow we’ll talk a little bit about kind of look back at the first seven weeks or so and what we’ve got coming up after the bye-week as we look ahead as well. So we’ll see you back here in Dexam tomorrow. [Music]

Time to bring out the black uniforms, wearing all teal has been bad gamesđ
Same old story. It must be REALLY hard to play quality football consistently
I THINK HE SHOULD FIND HIM A QB COACH AND FIND OUT WHATS HIS RELEASE POINT WHEN HE THROWS THE BALL. HE'S HAS A LONG AND LOW WINDING OF THE BALL WHEN HE THROWS. HIS RELEASE POINT CHANGES.
If Hunter canât play both positions full time, then you shouldnât have used 2 firsts to get him. Those of us who questioned the trade at the time said exactly that, and were assured âwe got 2 playersâ. No, clearly we didnât. Hopefully we got at least 1 great one, but the argument for using 2 firsts because he plays both ways was a mirage if youâre not willing to play him that way.
Well, if you listen to some of the basement coaches, Trevor is to blame for everything lol.
Yes, Trevor needs to be better, but idc about the 3-5 yard pass he misses where the receiver would be dropped for no gain or a loss. Iâm worried about the 30 yard dots he is throwing that are hitting receivers in the hands and being dropped. That said, heâs does need to start hitting those short routes.
The reason they are struggling the last two games, is because of the insane amount of penalties and drops that are happening at critical moments. Both are killing drives and keeping points off the board.
Makes me so aggravated when I can't watch the Jaguars! And I live in Central Florida! Florida teams should be on regular t.v.stations! Not everyone can afford streaming networks. Not fair! You're losing fans if the Florida residents can't even watch your games!!! Fix this problem!!! Go Jags!â¤
As Logs said , â The QB didnât give them a chance to win â . 5 of the 7 sacks were in the QB. Trevor is average and once again 3rd HC , no telling how many OC , QB coach and the QB still needs âfixingâ at some point you have to get to the point heâs average.
