[Sheehan] Kurt Suzuki got a one-year contract to manage the Angels. Remember, when you’re licking their boots by advocating for price-fixing, Arte Moreno and the other MLB owners are already planning for a 2027 lockout 13 months before the current CBA expires. They already know they’re doing it.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman led me to believe it is impossible to manage on a 1 year contract
Fuck Arte More
Arte is cheap, but that lockout thing sounds like pure speculation. Doesn’t Perry Minasian’s contract only have 1 year left? Seems more likely it is just a stop gap before hiring a new GM/Manager combo (unless the Angels are successful in 2026 and they want to keep them).
Welp, that’s prolly why Hunter didn’t get the job
Joe Sheehan is a pretty smart dude and I enjoy listening to him talk, but it also boggles my mind that someone so smart could subscribe to such a limited framing of a complex issue.
Like, is it surprising that fans look at a landscape with [big disparities in team revenue and payroll](https://imgur.com/a/GlzDlbx) and say, “We want something better?” And to advocate for something better is to be a billionaire bootlicker?
As a 51 year old life time angels fan, I am disgusted by this.
More than likely it appears from the outside looking in, that Arte is going to try to sell the team after the next CBA is worked out. The valuation of teams could trend upward by a sizable amount and we all know Arte is about his money. They have no long term commitments really and this is a clear path for the potential new owners to start fresh with their vision without having people tied to their books both players and executives.
Still, this is rough for Angels fans. I truly feel bad that this ghoul has bled this teams history and identity (both as a team and their presence within where they reside) dry on top of fumbling the best financial thing to ever happen to the team (Ohtani). They should have been at least perennial playoff contenders with the GOAT in the drivers seat for the franchise. Instead they have nothing to look forward to for the foreseeable future.
(Reposting since the Mods keep removing the posts on this topic??)
I would call the lockout thing speculation but also what kind of unserious nonsense is a one year manager deal
Sorry I’m a casual fan – owners are actually giving new managers a 1 year contract (which is ridiculous) because of the possibility there’s a lockout in 1-2 years?
The first and only time Arte made a move for the future lol
Jays usually win a World Series around lockouts no?
Now we know why Pujols walked away. Who gives a 1 year deal to a first time manager?
Doesn’t the Angels GM have a year left? Think it has more to do with that than with the CBA ending. I don’t think Arte is capable of looking that far ahead anyway.
Does it mean the owners are planning for a lockout, or does it just mean Arte is a cheap, unserious owner?
A 1 year deal basically makes Suzuki an interim coach. Perry has 1 year left on his deal too so hopefully we get a refresh after next year. But of course it doesn’t really matter who the manager or GM is as long as Arte is still the owner.
Coaching salaries don’t go against the cap in any league though? Like why a 1 year deal?
Honestly can’t tell if this is owners planning ahead for a lockout or it’s Arte getting himself ready to clean house when things don’t improve next season. Either way, I don’t think I’ll ever understand why Suzuki accepted this.
Its isnt necessarily tied to the lockout. Perry Minasian has 1 year left on his contract and Suzuki is being tied to Perry. Does the end of their contract line up with the lock out, yep and it may or may not be a conincidence, but its on Perry’s success.
If Angels fans are lucky we have a whole new world going to 2028 with a new owner, gm and coach
Of the 4 major sports leagues, the MLB spends the lowest percentage of revenue on player salaries. The Marlins spend 27% of their revenue on salaries. There’s 5 more teams which spend less than 40% (White Sox, Rays, Pirates, Cubs, Guardians). If a salary cap comes with a salary floor, that will be better for the players. This crusade against a cap is so weird because it’s something that, with the right concessions, is better for the players
Smart move, Albert.
Feels like a pretty clear ad hominem to call all people identifying competitive advantages/disparities “billionaire bootlickers”
I can’t believe the greatest player of the decade shackled himself to this clown show man
Calling it bootlicking like the players aren’t millionaires too lmao.
Give me a fucking salary cap
Who cares who manages the Los Angeles Angels. This is not a good team regardless of who manages this dumpster fire of an organization, whether it’s 1 year or 3 years, this team is constantly near the bottom year after year and it’ll stay that way until Arte Moreno sells the team.
“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity”
The angels are the only team stupid enough to only offer a rookie manager a one year
please be planning to sell please be planning to sell
Baseball socialists are so cringe.
“Boot licking”
We aren’t storming the winter palace bro.
We want a competitive league where I can buy $5k worth of season tickets with hope of winning it all as a selling point
It’s not a referendum on governments
Who was / has been a worse “LA” owner: Frank McCourt or Arte Moreno?
And yes, I know the Angels don’t play in LA, let alone LA county.
A one year contract in 2025 is insane
Oh boy, I love a good old Reddit conspiracy theory
Do you guys never get tired of making shit up and then getting angry about it?
Haha we’ve been lockout-ready for years!
Meh the owners seeing a potential extended negotiation ahead doesn’t make them wrong. Nor does introducing a salary cap. The NFL gets this one right by having a floor that’s pretty close to the cap and enough revenue sharing that no team is really hurting to meet the cap.
screw the highlights, this is when i want u/mlbofficial to chime in…
maybe the can pluck out some redditor comments…
Good. We need to get this figured out. Teams like LA should not be where they are at, nor should teams like the A’s or Pirates do what they do.
Baseball needs a salary cap. The players have to accept this. The owners know what they are in for and have planned accordingly. Player salaries are absolutely bonkers. Every other league has a working player/owner partnership that works way for the health of the league and the fans than before the partnership.
It literally has gotten to the point where the salaries are so high, the owners would make more money paying scabs and absorbing any temporary lost viewership.
Joe Sheehan is a real one
How long did you expect this contract to be?
no boots to lick when i believe that both the owners and the players are greedy AF. they thought it was hard coming back from ’94, let’s see how this plays out as younger generations are not materializing, people have other avenues of entertainment and a far less appetite to care about billionaires and millionaires. over half the league is not competitive habitually, fans of those teams will be much quicker to jump ship and move on.
