Can the Jets and Aaron Glenn finally get their first win? | Gang’s All Here
I just think that’s a bad formula is is letting these coaches that you you’re not sure you’re going to keep select these quarterbacks because then you’re you’re screwing up. It’s all about the quarterback to me and so you’re screwing up their development. So, I think Woody Johnson has to I think he needs to spend some time around this team this year and make sure just that that Aaron Glenn is the guy going forward and he’s going to be here for another, you know, two or three years at least to to set to be with this quarterback because I think if you’re letting them draft a quarterback and you’re not sure and he you might you might fire him next year like that’s a that’s a bad formula to me. Hello and welcome to Gangs All Here. My name is Ryan Samson. That’s my guy Frankie Videriti from U Stadium and that’s our Jets beat writer Brian Costello. The New York Jets have started the season 0 and6. Uh we are back here week seven against the Panthers. It’s glim. It’s not great right now. We’re going to talk about what Aaron Glenn’s comments were this week about Justin Fields, about this offense, about where this team is going. And we’ll discuss some of the heat that seems to be coming around the media and us as we discuss Aaron Glenn’s future with the team because it has gotten off to without a doubt the worst start in Jets history. But before we get to any of that, I’ll start with Ka. What a week. How you feeling? Have you Have you rec recovered and recouped from your trip to London? I think I think today I feel like I’m back. Ryan, it’s been took me a few days to feel 100%, but I I feel feel today like I’m 100% back. Frankie, how are you, bud? Feeling great, man. I’m in the presence. I feel like I’m a rock star. Brian Costello, what a week, man. I mean, I’m seeing you everywhere, man. It’s It’s such a pleasure. Uh, what an honor. I will say this, guys, at the end of the day, we can look back at this season and say, you know, this was a memorable one. I think we’ll remember this season for forever. So, uh, it’s something memorable. I like memorable things. So, we’ll we’ll remember Aaron Glenn’s first year as as the New York Jets head coach. So, that that’s a positive way to certainly look at it, Frankie, and what’s going on with this Jets team right now. Uh, because there’s not a lot of positives to talk about. But look, I it I I I know you guys love and you’re going to you deserve this. You should crush me because I picked them to win 10 games. That was a horrible look looking back at that now. And the way this this season has gone, I don’t think any one of us could have predicted 0 and six. I know there was a lot of tough teams because if you look at the opponents they have played thus far, look, those are some of the best teams you would have thought before the season. But then there’s also the point of how these games look and the feel that we’re seeing on the field of the product and the process that Aaron Glenn and this team has gone through. So I’ll start with you Ka. Yeah. Look, did you even see the way this team has played out and the way the product is right now being as bad as it’s been and how it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better anytime soon? No, I mean, look, I think back of something I wrote in the offseason and maybe we talked about it on here and I know I talked about it a few places was there was always this question of like what’s a successful season this year for the Jets, right? It’s kind of the assumption they’re not going to be a playoff team. So, what what does success look like? And I kind of latched on to this idea of a functional offense would be success for the Jets, right? And I even wrote at one point like they have to there has to be no more games where you’re going, “Oh, they just got their first first down at the two-minute warning.” Cuz we’ve seen that so many times in the last 10 years, 15 years, whatever. Sunday, there it was. The first first down came with the two-minute warning. And I was like, “Oh my god.” I’m like, “This is exactly what I wrote about that like you can’t have.” So they’re like we’re just back in this mode of, you know, the the offense just looked like it couldn’t function as an NFL offense on Sunday and that’s a week after their defense looked like they couldn’t play defense and they played better in London obviously, but yeah, it’s staggering of just how it’s looked and um just just how inep they looked on Sunday. Frankie, uh, even for you who I think you were the first one that that said to Ka and I in the offseason, I remember you were like, “Look, guys, I think this might be a rebuild this year.” And and I was even like, “Rebuild? What are you talking about? They’re going to retool.” Like the the the thought was like they have some pieces and that Glenn and Muji should be able to evaluate that and then build around that. But it’s gotten to the point where even your good players besides Garrett Wilson, you could argue, have not played well to this point. So, did you even see that this season was going to be like this to start? I mean, listen, man. I didn’t think it was going to be 0 and6. I thought they would have a win or two at this point, but I did think with Aaron Glenn as a firsttime head coach, there were so many new pieces here. I thought it was going to take some time. Think about what Vegas even told us before the year, guys. Vegas told us it was a six and a half over under win team. They had us in power rankings 28th, 29th. Now, that doesn’t mean that the team, you know, you can’t expect the team to win games, but obviously this thing was going to take some time. I didn’t like and I still don’t like the combination of Aaron Glenn and Justin Fields running this team or running this offense, if you want to call it, you know, that way. I I I just don’t see it. I I never thought that made sense. I thought they needed a more seasoned um veteran sort of quarterback, not Justin Fields, though. That was still going through a lot of growing pains in the league. And I thought Glenn just needed a little bit more experience on the offensive side of the ball and I don’t think he got that. So, it’s not surprising that the offense isn’t able to put up points and the defense is a little bit surprising how bad they’ve been early on, but um they weren’t going we couldn’t have expected them to win too many football games, honestly. I mean, it was this is this is a new thing. Everyone’s new. You’re playing against teams like Buffalo, man. They’ve been around for a while. Pittsburgh, those guys have been there for a while. But Tampa, a lot of uh you know, pundits have them as as as one of the best teams in the NFC coming into the season. So, it’s not surprising that they’re starting slow. What is surprising though is Glenn hasn’t been able to win a game yet. And it’s very surprising considering how successful New York Jets head coaches have been in their first year for the most part. Like, we’ve we’ve had coaches win games here in their first year just on pure energy and and focus alone. So, but with that being said, I’m not totally surprised and and we got to start thinking in in in the rebuild uh realm here. Well, it and what it looks like right now, right, is that we’re starting to get the answers that we kind of knew already about Justin Fields. So, he takes nine sacks last week against the Broncos. uh even after a bounceback performance from the defense who gave you a takeaway. Special teams looked a lot better. Gave you great positioning on the first two drives cause they end up with two field goals and then really nothing else materialized after that. They couldn’t get a good drive going. Like you said, they couldn’t get a first down for a while. But I didn’t expect was negative 10 net passing yards and really only 45 total when you have Garrett Wilson, you have Mason Taylor, you have Bree Hall. There’s been a lot that’s come out now this week about what exactly is this offense game plan and why is Justin struggling to get the ball out, looks afraid to throw and and taking a lot of long long developing sacks. So, what is your overall sense on what the coaching staff has done around him? And do you feel like look, the Jets are hurting themselves by playing Justin more and more every week? Well, I think they were coaching scared on Sunday. I mean, that’s what jumped out to me was like it looked like they just they just didn’t want to take any chances. They were running the ball in some situations where you were scratching your head like, well, you know, why aren’t they throwing the ball here? Obviously, the two-minute drill at the end of the first half was mindboggling, and it looked like they had no idea what they wanted to do. It looked like they were just like, “Maybe we’re going to be aggressive. Oh, no, no, let’s let’s let’s run out the clock. Let’s like they were back and forth.” So, this was a horribly coached game. And I think you guys have been around me enough. I do not usually rip the coaches as much as I rip players and uh but this was a horribly coached game and so did and Justin looks scared. He looks scared to let it rip. Longest pass was 11 yards, you know, and I think it’s become a topic this week, but I brought up Wednesday with with Glenn is like zero interceptions should be a great stat. might be the first quarterback I’ve ever covered with zero interceptions and it feels like a negative stat because he’s just yeah he’s not he’s not he’s not throwing 50-50 balls. He’s not giving his players a chance to win. And you know open in the NFL is sometimes really small windows and you got to try to fit it in there and sometimes they’re going to pick it off. And I don’t agree with Aaron Glenn’s comment of like, oh, everyone will be bitching then when when he throws. Like, I think Jets fans and reporters are smart enough to know that, yeah, you might result in an interception, but it might actually result in an explosive play. Oh my gosh, what’s that? Like, we haven’t seen that. Their longest play this year is 33 yards. That passed to Garrett against Pittsburgh. And that’s really it. It hasn’t been explosive enough. So, he’s got to take more chances, which he acknowledged. Fields acknowledged Wednesday. Um, so yeah, I I think, you know, I don’t think Ryan, you said something like it’s not going to get any better or it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better. I do think there’s chances here it’s going to get better. It’s a long season. They’ve got games coming up. I realize they look terrible, but there’s they the the Panthers like have no pass rush whatsoever, right? The the the Bengals defense has been scuffful and the Browns offense might be worse than the Jets offense. Um, there’s other teams on the schedule they can win. You know, I sort of think back to to 2019 where I think Gase I think he started one and six or something like that. One and seven maybe and then went seven and nine. They won some games in November and December. So, you know, it it still can flip. I I wouldn’t say there’s no no chance it’s going to flip a little bit. It’s just, you know, it can only flip so much now with 0 and six, right? So, I I I hear you on that. Like, there’s only so many chances here. But I think you you you’ve discussed a lot that’s been concerning is that the coaches do look scared and the and the way that they’ve gone about the game plan here. You can really critique and I’ve heard your questions cause which were why aren’t you throwing screen passes? Why aren’t you getting the ball to Bree Hall more? And why aren’t you using Justin Fields legs more? A threat that really should be a huge part of this offense. It feels like that’s where the Jets are kind of forcing themselves into these tight windows and holes of we can only develop plays this way. Instead, you’re not using all the tools that are there for you. Yeah, I think the Broncos defense got their head last week. I think they were they they treated them like they were the 85 Bears and they’re a good defense, but you know, I think they were just they were scared like they they coached scared and they kept Reese in too much on pass protection. Like to me, one of the things watching Salah’s defense was teams love to throw screen passes like we talked about all the time because Salah was an attacking defense. They would throw it right over the defensive line’s head and that was something they always hit the defend against. And I’m like, I don’t understand why there weren’t two or three screen passes in the game plan where you just call that and just that helps fields out. That softens the pass rush a little bit. There seemed to be none of that. And so I think I think they were scared last week of the the Broncos defense. Yeah. What’s crazy is we didn’t we didn’t target Bree Hall in the passing game last week. I mean he wasn’t targeted at all. And you would think with Field struggling that much cause and Ryan that you’d give him an easy checkown to to Bree to say the least, you know. I mean come on. Yeah. And all the talk in training camp, you know. I mean they split Bree out in training camp all the time. And they haven’t they’ve done that I think I can remember once where I’ve seen that this season they haven’t really used him effectively in the past game enough at all. No. And you could feel it on the offense. You could feel why that the and and another thing that is concerning which you’re not going to have to worry about this week because Garrett Wilson looks like he’s out uh is that they didn’t target him until almost I mean they didn’t they don’t pepper him with much targets too. That’s what that’s what’s I guess confusing to me as well is like can’t you as the offensive coordinator hey look Justin we’re designing this play to go to Garrett throw it to him like give him the ball. It just feels like maybe sometimes I don’t know maybe it’s Justin maybe it’s the way he’s processing but it feels like they’re not designing enough touches for Garrett Wilson at the start of games too. Yeah, I think he could probably simplify things, Ryan. Right. I I think sometimes these guys get so into their NFL offenses of choice routes and you know all this like they complicate the the stuff of just you’re right sometimes you just need to say throw it to G Wilson and um you know it’s the old it’s player not players not plays and they need to get to that mindset sometimes. Now, you’re right. This week, I don’t think you’re gonna say that about Josh Reynolds too much. But maybe an Aren Smith like, “Hey, Arian Smith’s going downfield. Just chuck it. Just chuck it to run under the ball.” Like, do that. I would I think, you know, you come out on the first play and do something like that. Like, it sets the tone even if you don’t complete it. Like, just take a shot downfield just to show that you’re going to do it. But I doubt they do that. Look, uh, and the thing we should probably flip it to now is, and and I’ll ask you guys point blank right now, real quick. Do you get a sense that Justin Fields is the starting quarterback or future for this team heading into next year? No. I mean, look, I think I think there’s a chance that he’s here with a they draft a quarterback, right? and like they keep him and and there’s a competition in the summer and maybe they decide that Fields is going to start the season cuz the rookie is not ready like the Russell Wilson thing with the Giants and he starts four games or three games or whatever but he’s not like the capital THE starter next season. I can’t see that. Yeah, I agree with Ka there. There’s no way there’s no way Ryan you can’t go into the year with him starting unless you have a a rookie that you feel like you can develop and or needs time developing. let’s say like a Dante Moore and you want to keep him there for on on the bench for 6 to 8 weeks and then once the tires kind of fall off of fields which inevitably they will around this time uh you you would you put him in but I even think they’ll look for maybe a veteran backup that’s more conducive to what Tanner wants to do there offensively o over a project in Fields. Well, that’s where I I want to go to now where Ka wrote this awesome piece for Post Sports Plus about this Jets team is heading towards a top pick. It no matter what you think of there’s wins coming here eventually or they go 0 and 17, they’re ending up with the top pick in the draft. Um, one of the top picks. Yeah. With that being said, there is now this this worry cause about do you let this regime pick that quarterback of the future? You would hope. But then you bring up a great point that I would like to toss to you about it’s not so much do you trust them to pick that quarterback. It’s now can they actually stick around and develop that quarterback? And I and I just want to hear what your your thoughts on that. Yeah. I Yeah, that’s the question right now everyone’s asking. Oh, can you trust them? Like I don’t know how you know the answer to that question because good good coaches and good GMs have screwed up quarterback picks before and like no one’s has anyone picked two really good ones. Like I don’t know Bill Pley picked Peyton Mann. They also pick Carrie Collins. Like it’s not there’s no formula. So to me the bigger issue that I see is what we saw this week is Brian Callahan gets fired after taking Cam Ward. So now Cam Ward has to go through this season with like a lame duck coaching staff and then he’s going to have to learn a new offense next year. So you’re delaying his development. Happened last year with Caleb Williams. Happened with Bryce Young in Carolina. Um it’s happened with Jared Goff. It happened with Baker Mayfield. like this this has happened quite a bit and we even saw it not even number one picks you saw it here with Sam Narald when they fired top bowls. So like I just think that’s the bad formula is letting these coaches that you you’re not sure you’re going to keep select these quarterbacks because then you’re you’re screwing up it’s all about the quarterback to me and so you’re screwing up their development. Um, so that was kind of my point. Frankie, your thoughts on what Kaisa is saying? No, I mean I agree with him, man. I absolutely do. I There’s no way to tell because he’s not necessarily Aaron Glenn going to be the one that’s going to be so hands-on with this quarterback and going to be working with him day in and day out. That’s on the offensive coordinator that’s on the quarterback’s coach. They might get it right. They could. I mean, I don’t know if Aaron Glenn’s the biggest variable in that development process like people think. I think a lot of times everyone looks at the head coach as being the person responsible for the quarterback developing. I think the head coach is responsible for putting a team around the quarterback and giving them proper time if they need it to develop and knowing when to put them in or or even bench them. We saw Bryce Young when we’re playing on Sunday. He got benched. They put him back in and he looked like a new guy. So the coach has to make those decisions. In terms of developing the quarterback, you guys know I love me some Tanner Strand. So, I mean, as long as he’s here, I have faith that they’ll put the quarterback in a position to get the ball out if he wants to. We have a guy that doesn’t want to get the ball out, but if we could bring in someone like a like a Mendoza who wants to get the ball out and and Tanner works with this kid, I think you could see a quarterback come in by week six or seven and and and play well. And I don’t think Aaron is is going to be that responsible for that quarterback being, you know, de, you know, developing or not. Like, but he’s going to be the one he’s going to be the one picking the quarterback, right? Correct. Like that’s the problem. It’s like it’s not the development. You’re right. But like he’s going to be the one sitting there April 20, whatever, saying, “All right, this is the guy.” Like I I mean, it’s going to be collaborative. He’s I don’t think he’s going to be but but to me, he’s got the final say in this organization right now. So if if Tanner Angstrand’s arguing for one quarterback and Aaron Glenn likes another quarterback, they’re going to go with who Aaron Glenn likes. I hope it’s a consensus first overall guy. Like I just hope like Yeah. It doesn’t feel like that right now. We got one. It doesn’t. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn’t really feel like there’s that guy right now. I mean I’m sure things change by February, March, but right now it doesn’t feel like that. No. I’m also saying Go ahead, Frankie. No, really quick. I’m also saying that because if there is a consensus number one guy, I think Glenn’s going to be back next year. So, I think if you want to make a move in year three of this, then you’ll have the consensus number one guy. Whether he played or not, he probably will if Glenn’s trying to save his job, similar to what’s going on with Dave Ball and Dart this year. I think that in year three, you’ll be in a in in a better spot to bring in a new coach and if Tanner sticks around, etc. So, well, this is where I’ll I will reflect on this cause with you. The comparisons with the Lions and the Jets that we constantly hear from Aaron Glenn, right? So, you’re talking, you guys were just putting it great about, look, Glenn’s going to get his chance to to pick his quarterback, but it’s different every time I hear him compare the situations with the Lions and the Jets. Like look, I know the Lions got off to a really bad start in 2021. Uh, and they had arguably a worst worst roster. Yeah. Campbell and Glenn were taking over in Detroit compared to what this current regime has now in New York. What gives me confidence that they can develop a quarterback if they’re going to draft one this offseason, which it seems like when I’ve seen them really seems like they mishandled a lot of the talent that’s been on this roster already that has been proven to be players that you can build around or at least hope to build around that most draft and and talent evaluators would say, “Yeah, no, that’s a very good player in Saw and Garrett and Bree and the and all the first and second round picks on the offensive line. And you have Quinnon Williams and you have Quincy Williams and you have Jamie and Sherwood. Like how am I supposed to have confidence in Aaron Glenn here? Yeah. I don’t think he can right now, but I don’t think you have a choice, Ryan. I think I think that’s Yeah, but like I don’t I don’t know though. Did did I guess not to pound the Detroit analogy into the ground because we are we’ve done that already with with Aaron Glenn, but there probably wasn’t a lot of confidence about around Dan Campbell at this time either in Detroit, right? And I think now he’s considered to be a good coach. He’s done a good job. But guess what they did in Detroit? They got good players, right? They brought in a lot of good players. They that first draft I think had St. Brown um in it and someone else I’m forgetting that Pine Su and then the second draft had Aiden Hutchinson um Jir Gibbs they got like they they’ve done a good job in the draft and they they they got good players so but yeah I I’m going to just say like there’s been situations where probably people didn’t have faith in Dan Campbell after that first season. I Yeah, I don’t know. It’s it’s Joe Douglas’s guy Jir Gibbs. Guys, by the way, remember that Joe Douglas wanted Jamir Gibbs. He did want Jamir Gibbs real bad. Uh well, with that being said, and and again, all the comparisons to to Detroit here, Jets fans are sick and tired of waiting. But like you said, you told us this before the season cause, you’re like, you guys got to have patience. It’s wearing thin already because of how this season started. Um, so look, I I I want to do I want to go to Gang Sounds Off uh about Aaron Glenn’s comments about Justin Fields getting the ball out quick because it was evident on film he was holding the ball too long. He looked afraid to get the ball out. And like Ka asked Glenn multiple times this week like look, are you guys going to be aggressive downfield? Justin Fields talked about being aggressive downfield, but this is what Aaron Glenn said today about him hold Justin Fields holding on to the ball. He said, “I know that’s a huge topic that everyone talks about, but there’s a lot that goes into it. When you look at the time he gets the ball out, some of those have been his best games. When he’s holding the ball there 3 seconds or whatnot, that’s who he is. Sometimes it’s play calls, the way he sees things. I’m not sitting here saying he doesn’t need to get the ball out. There’s some quick game where the ball needs to come out. You work on those in practice. There’s also an element of we know who that player is. You look at Lamar Jackson, his numbers getting the ball out is higher than Justin’s. Josh Allen’s numbers are higher than Justin’s. I think everybody tends to see those who those guys are and understands that for some reason they don’t understand Justin. I’m not sitting here saying that there aren’t some times where he needs to get the ball out. He knows that. He articulated that to you guys. We’re going to continue to work on that as much as we can cuz I know I’m beating a dead horse here. But Justin is not Josh Allen and he’s not Lamar Jackson. And those guys do get the ball out quicker than what Justin’s been getting out this year. How about Patrick Mahomes? Is he Patrick Mahomes? Let’s just throw all the names out there, guys. For all it’ll take us an hour. I know there’s been a lot of conversation about Aaron Glenn’s press conferences this week and but like if you’re if you if I was advising him I’d say like yeah probably don’t bring up Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson with who have three MVPs between them. Uh yeah and he’s wrong if he’s talking about the statues this year I maybe he’s talking about it over a longer period of time but this year you know Fields is 3.01 Allen’s 2.91 and Lamar’s 2.87. So feels right. Caleb’s the only person who holds the ball longer than than Justin Fields right now. So is he gaslighting us? Like I I need to know that. Is that what he’s trying to do? No. I I just I think he’s defending his guy, but in just a bad way. I I just I think I think a lot of times coaches hesitate to make comparisons, right? Like we love to ask comparison questions for like rookies usually. Ah, who does who does this rookie remind you of? And coaches usually say, I don’t like to make comparisons. It’s probably it’s probably a good idea because you generally don’t make comparisons to bad players, coaches always, you know, like so Rex was famous for comparing guys to to like Hall of Famers and at one point we used to joke that the the Jets defense had Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and like me and Joe Green on it because that’s like who Rex compared people to. But yeah, so he should probably just stay away from those comparisons, I think. Frankie, your thoughts? Well, I was noticing this cause and Ryan in in uh in his pressers, right? I remember Aaron Glenn said after the Cowboys game, he brought up how the Jets defense led Dallas out of the half to three straight punts. And I remember we did a postgame. I’m like, wait, it was only two. Let me double check. It was only two. He said three. Whatever. Not a big deal. Then with the field goal, yeah, he’s like a 68 yard, a 65 yard. First he said a 45 yardder Darren it’s 45 plus 17 it’s 10 in the end zone seven back all right all right 62 whatever but all right it happens although that’s pretty alarming considering the fact that a 62 yer listen he’s not going to make it Nick Faulk but you probably have a better chance of winning that game if he tries that than where that than what you did on fourth and eight so he kind of gave a little white lie I’ll call it there or something he he had forgotten which is alarming but whatever then he said it again caen Ryan And against Denver, he goes, “You know, when we went for the fourth and one, we were on the 50. You guys were on your 37. You weren’t on the 50.” So, either he’s not remembering, which is alarming because you want your head coach to remember things that happened, you know, in week one on third and 10 in the third quarter, first, you know, first drive. Or he’s just kind of, you know, stretching the truth a little bit to not make himself look as bad. I don’t know. And I’m not trying to pin him down too much for this. I know he gets put on the spot. This is his first time really doing this stuff, but he’s been kind of lying a little bit in in these I don’t or stretching the truth, excuse me, in these post games. Yeah, I I give people benefit of doubt in postgame. I think it’s a pretty tough thing to do because it’s you’re walking out of the the heat of the battle. They get 15 minutes maybe before they come talk to us maybe. Yeah. And so I do think it’s tough and I I’m I’m not going to bang them on not having specifics because the alternative is I got to watch the tape and that drives me crazier like that than then. So So if you miss some specifics on yardages and stuff, I’m not going to bang on that. I I think I think it happens. But um you know, it’s I actually two guys I should say I I talked to Nick Folk after the game. I I’m not not writing it, but he um I asked him and he said he was hitting them uh from like 57 58 pregame in that direction. Um so and then he said during the game I said Glenn said the 35 and he says yeah like in game it shifts. Uh, and so he said it was 35. And I said, “Well, I’m like, what do you think about a 62 yard there?” And he said, “Well, it’s, you know, it’s 60Β° out. It’s grass. Uh, you know, it’s,” He said he didn’t, he understood why they didn’t do that. Maybe he’s being the good soldier here. Um, but I said, “Don’t you think?” I’m like, “I personally think there’s a better chance you hit a 62 yard than they convert a fourth and eight.” And he said, “No.” He said that I think there’s probably a 1% chance I make that kick. Really? Yeah. He said there’s a higher chance that they would they make they convert the the fourth down. So, you know, yeah, he he said because he even said um Will Lutz kicked it from 57, I think, right? Earlier in the game and he goes he barely made it. Like he barely made it. He’s 10 years younger than me. So, he’s like, I’m probably not making that kick. Maybe being a good good soldier there. Might be. But but I I Nick’s a pretty honest guy and so I I take him at his word. I think overall though and what I’m trying to emphasize after listening to both of you and and and us seeing what Aaron how Aaron Glenn has handled these these pressers during the week pressers with you and handling the tough questions guys it’s not gone great. That’s the way I would summarize this. And and what I what I mean by that is like right you’re you’re evaluating this coach after his first season for him going 0 and6 for them being uncompetitive in a lot of these games and how these games have really just come down to garbage time stat padding and he could try and paint the narrative as much as he wants. It’s not gone great on the field and both off the field for this coach. And that’s where I get a little frustrated really frustrated about what we’re seeing right now. No one will care if they win though, Ryan. Right. No one will care about press conference. The press conferences are all being featured right now because they’re losing and like I know I don’t know how you guys are. Um but like to me as like when I’m a fan when I’m watching like let’s say I’m watching baseball I tune into the post games much more after losses than I do after wins, right? Like I I want to hear what the what the Mets manager, Yankees manager like if there’s a bad loss it’s like a car wreck, right? I’m like, “Oh, oh my god, I I’m rubbernecking. I want I want to turn the postgame on.” When they have a big win, I don’t really care what the what the manager has to say about that. So, they get a lot of focus uh when you’re losing and they don’t really matter when you’re winning. So, if he wins, you know, um nobody’s going to care about these press conferences. That’s a good point. Really good point. It’s a good point, Ka. Uh but also at the same time, he needs to improve what’s going on the field, though. That’s the That’s the Yeah. Yeah. the field on the field is totally different. Like that that’s where the focus has to be. He’s got to get better. You also I again I I I know you’re saying it doesn’t matter about the pressers, but I think at the same time like fans have never been more in tune with the on the field product, watching the all 22, paying attention to what you’re saying and and holding you accountable for those things and and you guys represent us in that point, right? So like I think and you guys have more access to the press conferences than ever. Yeah. Right. Like you have you guys have like these things used to be done with like maybe one camera in the room from a local TV station and now they’re they’re streamed live and right then like you know there’s SNY videos puts out they they clip it up real quick and put it out. So even though you guys have a ton of access to all this stuff. Yeah. Um fellas I I I want to be quick on this game because I don’t think many fans are going to be paying attention to this Jets Panthers game to be honest with you. now with Garrett Wilson being out. But with that being said, I will have to ask for each of you to give us a key matchup for this game if you have one considering the Jets are going to be down Garrett Wilson and the Broncos are also getting Trouba Hubback healthy. I see that note just came through. So, I’ll start with you Frankie if you have a have a key matchup. What’s your key match up for this Jets Panthers game? Uh, my key matchup is Bryce Young verse that Jets defense. That’s my key matchup. I think if they can get to Bryce Young and they can force him to not hold on to the ball cuz he has a problem himself holding on to the ball a little too long. Likes to double pump sometimes. Kind of overthinks in the pocket a bit. If Will McDonald and those boys up front, Germaine Quinnon come out to play this Sunday, man. It’s time um if they can get after Bryce Young a little bit. Hit him a bit. Starts he starts thinking a little bit too much. Doesn’t give them enough time to want to do what they want to do. They love to line up in 12 personnel. They might get Javon Sanders back. They’re getting It looks like Jaylen Coker back. Yep. Uh they got a bunch of weapons out there. Yeah. So, they’re going to want to do what every other team is doing against us. Whoops. Wait till they’re in man. You know, do a pre- snap motion to see if they’re in man or not. Then just have the crossers and let your quarterback stay in the pocket forever until he finds someone. We got to get to Bryce Young. And uh that’s my key matchup. Cause at first I was proud of my matchup last week, Ryan, where I remember I had Shawn Payeyton versus Aaron Glenn. It was a good matchup was laughing at Aaron Glenn, but look, I mean, they won they barely won the game. I almost had that right, too. You did. You almost should Jets should have won the game. Um, if they could freaking move the ball at all. Uh, yeah. I don’t have a great matchup this week. I guess I’ll go Sauce versus T McMillan. You know, he’s having a good season. Um, I think Saus was the one at fault on that touchdown when I watched it back. He It looked like it was his own like maybe quarter he was supposed to be stay in quarter coverage there went in. I I So, I’m not sure, but you know, I think Kaw shut the shut the kid down, shut McMillan down um and slow the slow the Panthers down a little bit. I I think they’ll be good against the run. I know the Panthers have run the ball really well, so I’m curious what they do against the passing game. That’s a good one, Ka. Uh Ted McMillan has been really good this year. Uh just had two touchdowns last week, has put up some nice yardage in games, and I think look, Sauce has got to be able to lock down their number one receiver, and he he is their number one receiver already as a rookie. Uh I think my key matchup would probably be how do the Jets handle this rushing attack from the Panthers that K just talked about. Uh the fact they’re getting Chuba Hubard back and Rico Dael has been lighting the world on fire the last couple weeks. Um and look, the Jets defense was good last week. I think they they did a really nice job against the the Broncos uh rushing attack and they held Bo Knicks in check trying to make him make great throws. Can the Jets defense stop the run this week? Because I think like like you said, cause and you Frankie, I think they can get after Bryce Young if they stop the run. Otherwise, they’re going to just keep running the ball and feeding both of those running backs. So, I’m looking at Jamie Sherwood who I think had his best game of the year by far last week. had a nice tipped pass uh deflection, made some nice uh plays in in the pass and run. So, I think it’s on him and it’s on this uh Maya uh how do I say this guy’s name? The rookie Magoa. Maagoa. It’s on those two guys. Kiko Kiko. There you go. Kiko. Easy. Uh it’s on those two guys to be able to stop the run against this Panthers rushing attack because they’re going to try and run the hell out of the football this week. Maligo looked really good by the way last week. If he keeps playing Yeah, if he keeps he they looked excellent. I can’t believe the difference one week made. Right. The week before he looked like he didn’t belong on an NFL field. The next week he looks like uh Ray Lewis’s little brother. So that was that was nice to see. Ray Lewis’s little brother. He looked good, man. Rocking that 51. He’s looking looking big out there. I like this kid. Hey, do it against the Panthers this year. Miami, you know, Miami boy. Come on, man. Uh time for stump. Cause time for me to try and uh get him going here. I listen. He’s got He got me last week. I’m going to see if I can get him here. Kai, can you tell me who has thrown for the most passing yards in a game against the Carolina Panthers as a Jets quarterback? Oh, Jesus. Against the Carolina Panthers, who the Jets hold a losing record all time to, by the way, not not Bobby Brisker. Not Bobby Brisker. I’ll go Vinnie Testie. Ryan, second most Vinnie Testie. Number one, your boy who you love, Josh Macau, in 2000. Oh, wow. That’s a stat and a half. I like that guy. 307. Yep. 307 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Jets lost that game 3527 to Cam Newton who didn’t throw for any touchdowns that game. Is that That’s the game Cam Newton scored a touchdown and then Jamal pushed him. Right. That’s right. That’s right. Yeah. Uh so yes, that was that one. And then here’s a bonus question for you, K. Can you tell me the last time the Jets actually beat the Panthers? Last time the Jets actually beat the Panthers. So, um, I’ll go 2009 they beat them. Right on it. 2009 the Jets beat the Panthers 17-6. That was the last time the Jets have beaten the Panthers. It’s been 16 years now. They don’t play a lot. They don’t play him a lot, but those starting quarterbacks were Jake Delhomme and Mark Sanchez. Not so great stuff going on in the news with him. Uh the Jets only scored one offensive touchdown was a Thomas Jones three touchdown. Derell Rivas had a 67 yard pick six. Ah, I remember that. Yes, that was a fun prime prime Rivas in 2009. All right, I got Let’s go to overunders, fellas. Uh not a good week for cause two and five. Oh, should have gone under on everything Jets, right? Yes. Uh Frankie was three and four. So Frankie’s creeping up slowly to K. Still still behind though. Still behind. Yes. Ka is 20 and 23. Frankie is 18 and 25 on the season in overunders. I got some good props here, fellas. I’m going to start off with everyone’s favorite player they want to talk about right now. Justin Fields. 171 and a half pass yards. I can’t believe it’s that high considering he threw for 45 this past week. I’m going under. Frankie going under. Under. Yeah. Um, I’ll go under as well. This is not going to be great, guys. All right, let’s go. Justin Fields rushing yards. 40 and a half rushing yards. Frankie, go down. Frankie, well, I want to ask first. I want to ask Ca uh what’s going on with this leg injury? Is this like a serious thing with Fields or it’s just something he brought up? No, I think he’s over it. I think he’s over it now. I think he had it in my after Miami. He’s not he hasn’t been on the injury report this week. So, I think he’s Okay. You know what? because he’s over it. I’m going over. Going over. It’s a big rushing day for Fields. Not a read option, Ry. Do they actually call him? I don’t know. Yeah, I agree. I think over. I think this is going to be a big big Fields run the ball game. I think they’re going to call a ton of design runs for him. I can see him scoring, rushing for a couple touchdowns. Like I think this couple touchdowns. Wow. Yeah, cuz I don’t think they’re I think with the lack of receivers um that they’re going to have to run the ball a lot. And I think you’re going to see a lot of Justin Fields running to in this game. Well, let’s go to the other quarterback in this game, Bryce Young. They got him at 183 pass yards. I’m going to go over 18. I’m going to go under on that. Under for Ka. And then let’s go to Bree Hall because you guys talk about running the ball. Bruce Hall 67 and a half rushing yards. Uh Frankie over That was very dramatic. Yes. Yeah. I I’m gonna go I’m gonna go over it, too. I think it’s gonna be a big rushing day for the Jets. All right. And let’s go to Tet McMillan. 53 and a half receiving yards. What does he do against Sauce Gardner? It’s a good number. K, you want to go? I’ll go under. Under. And what was yours, Frankie? I’m going to go under as well. Okay. So, you guys think Sauce has a good day against both of them? Now, let’s go to Mason Taylor. Last problem there, fellas. They got him at 42 and a half receiving yards. Sorry, guys. That’s an easy under for me. Under. Yeah, under. 42. Wow. They don’t have anyone to throw to. You’re not going to pepper Mason Taylor with targets? I only had two yards last week, Ry. Yeah. Well, they didn’t really throw the ball. Well, thank you. I know he’s targeted once. All right, fellas. Let’s pick this game. Jets are one and a half point dog. Ka obviously picked the Jets to win last week, so that puts him at 4-2, me at 5- one, and Frankie at two and four who gets on the board again. I’ll start with Frankie. What is your pick for Jets versus Panthers week seven? Well, guys, um I really want to pick the Jets this week. I was speaking with Ryan. We were texting back and forth. He was telling me about, you know, the things that the Jets could do this week and why they could win this game. And I was buying into a lot of it. However, with Chuba back, Chuba Hubard back, uh potentially you have Coker back for them and Javon Sanders a tight end. I don’t think this Jets defense, specifically the secondary is going to be ready for what Dave Canales and that Carolina team wants to do. Uh do I think it’s going to be a high-scoring game? I don’t. But this Jets team playing a team that won their last two, also trying to win, by the way, their first game on the road in Carolina. Yeah. Uh, I think they do win their first game on the road. I’m I’m I’m not picking the Jets until I have confidence that both sides of the ball can have good to very good games in unison. It seems like when one side does well, the other side completely craps themselves. So, I’m going Carolina 23, Jets 14. Okay, Kaz, give me those players you’re worried about, Frankie. The car these great players Carolina’s giving back. Give me those again. Coer, who else? Jaylen Ko. Jaylen Coker was good last year. K. And who else? Who else? And Jatavon Sanders. One of my favorite players out of the draft. You went to Texas. Fourthrounder. Guy can play, man. Watch. I’m telling you, they’re going to do those crossing routes with them. Yeah. Tremble. Ryan. What are we talking about? He loves the draft cause. He does. You can tell like they’re the 99 Rams coming here. They’ve played a lot better this year compared to what they have in previous. Okay. Great. a lot better than what they played in previous is like low bar. That the Jets don’t have a bar right now. That’s the problem. You know guys, I don’t know if you guys watched the Simpsons at all, but there was a Simpsons episode where I think it was Crusty the Clown bet on the on the Washington Generals to beat the Harlem Globe Trotters and his logic was they’re due. They’re due. The Jets are due. I’m going I’m riding with the Jets again. Jets 23, Panthers 10. The defense shuts down this vaunted Panthers offense that Frankie’s hyping up. They do just enough on the ground. They get another turnover. Maybe score a defensive touchdown. Justin Fields runs all over them. 23-10. Jets get their first win. I still like that. Baz is picking them again and he’s stealing my thunder cuz I’m on the Jets this week, baby. There you go. Wow, I’m low. It makes no sense. No sense why the Jets should win this football game. They should get blown out to be honest with you how bad they played. The Panthers actually have a good defense. Their offense should be young and upcoming and and promising. And the Jets haven’t be able to stop the run until this past week. The Panthers should be able to run the football on them. But for some reason, like Kai said, they’re due. I think this Jets defense actually has a turnover like a sauce Garner pick six like Drell Rivas goes 70 yards for a house touchdown. sauce touchdown. This Jets team is going to get their first win of the season and they’re going to beat the Panthers. I got them winning 17-7. It’s going to be such an ugly game. Barn burner. Barn burner. Rock fight. Rock fight. And I I honestly I don’t know how they’re going to score on offense, but I’m looking forward to watching how they can try and make Justin Fields do something other than hold the ball for another sack. And Armoon Meu going, “What the are you doing on the field?” So, uh, yeah, we’re looking forward to it. That’s a preview, guys, or I I guess a a state of the state of the team right now because that’s what this pod really was today. And they’re forcing us to talk more about the offseason than the actual product on the field at this point. It’s very frustrating, but we’re trying to get through it. And I appreciate Ka and I appreciate Frankie for hopping on here and doing all this talk with us. Uh, fellas, any final thoughts before we sign off? No, I think that’s it. We covered it, Ry. I actually I forgot to mention this back in Miami a few weeks ago. The guy who was driving the media shuttle was a big fan of the podcast in Miami. So, shout out to that that dude. I forgot I don’t think I got his name, but he was the he was he was very excited to talk to me after the game on that Monday night. So, shout out to our faithful listeners. Wow, that’s awesome. Shout out to to the Miami driver helping Ka out. And we got some listeners. Listen, there’s been fun some fun comments here about what the heck’s going on with this team. But people are find some amusement in this podcast. Uh I enjoy doing it with you guys because you guys make it easy on me. But uh yeah, look, we’ll we’ll catch you next week, guys. We’ll look forward to your coverage throughout the weekend. And uh Frankie and I will have you co all you Jets fans covered postgame for the Jets postgame live show here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel. Until next time, fellas. Go Jets.

GOAT pod. but you all were too nice to Glenn.
Once I saw the WR depth chart before game one. I knew offensively, we were doomed π€
Glenn is an AWFUL HC..He will be fired by the middle of next season..Jets will go 0-17 this year. Glenn has NO CLUE WHAT IS GOING ON! His downfall is exacerbated by his sticking with Fields as his Qb
It would take Divine intervention to beat the Panthers……. I believe in miracles
Answer: NO
Lol you know our season is trashed when our hero as fans is Costello . Hahaha holding ppl accountable!
Glenn is incompetent and needs to be fired immediately! He is arrogant for no reason!!!
No one wants to waste five more minutes on Glenn! He needs to be fired!!
We canβt afford to waste seasons on the worst coach in Jets history ! They keep him we will vote with our wallets and stay home!
Costello, Glenn is no Dan Campbell!
I can't believe the Jets have the same record as my high school football team smhhhhh
