NY Knicks News After WIN vs. Cavaliers On Opening Night

1 and0. The New York Knicks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 119 to 111 in the season opener. And you can’t go 82 and 0 if you don’t go 1 and0. But seriously, you’re 1 and0 in the Mike Brown era if you’re pumped up about the way your New York Knicks played on prime time, beating a top team in the Eastern Conference without two major impact players. Hit that thumbs up icon for me right now. All righty. A lot to talk about following that win. I’m really pumped up about it. I thought that Mike Brown coached a really good game. I thought he pushed the right buttons. And things that kind of stuck out to me right away is the New York Knicks played 11 players in this game. Nine different players ended up playing in quarter number one. And that’s something that you’re going to see is much different from the way the Knicks played basketball under Tom Tibido. Um, not to take shots at tips. I’m not going to do that. It’s just a different team. They played a different brand of basketball. They’re going to use their players in different ways. And that’s one of the main reasons Mike Brown was brought in here, to maximize the offense while also reaching deeper into the bag of players. Look, I can’t remember many games the New York Knicks won pretty much like they did today, which they dominated for 40 of 48 minutes and they win by eight points. And Jaylen Brunson wasn’t really all that good. He got to the foul line and he was extremely efficient when he did, but 518 from the field, one and nine from three. He didn’t play good. The shots didn’t fall, but he had control of the game. The thing that stuck out to me the most is the Deuce McBride leap year. It is here for this team. 15 points for Deuce, four of seven from the field, four of six from three. Had a couple of great defensive plays down the stretch. got on the floor led to a runout dunk for OGN and Obi. If he is able to play at this level, which is tough, but if he’s able to do it, man, he takes the ceiling of this team to a different stratosphere. And we got to see that five out lineup that I have been craving for for a long time where it was Jaylen Brunson and Miles McBride and OG and an Obi and Male Bridges and Carl Anthony Towns. Those five players closed the game for the New York Knicks. And you saw what that lineup can do. I go back to the dagger three that OGN and Obi hit in that right corner. Floor is spaced. You can’t help off. Brunson and Towns run a pick and roll. Brunson keeps the defender on his back hip. And then it’s four Knicks on three defenders for the Cavs. Brunson drives, kicks into the corner to OG, and he bangs it from the right corner to give the Knicks the win. I thought OG was really good in this game. And 14 rebounds like OG and an Obi was all over the glass. He played big for this team as well. Three steals, had a block as well. So, four stocks for him. Thought he was good on the defensive side of the ball. He was out and running in transition. 17 shots, four of nine from three, missed some free throws in the fourth quarter, gave me PTSD, but overall, you can’t really ask more of OG. OG was great in the second half. He was really good all game. Male Bridges was awesome in the first half. 12 points for Bridges in the first two quarters. He looked aggressive. He looked confident. He was taking shots. He was making shots. He was running in transition. He was attacking the rim. I was really, really excited by the big-time players for the Knicks. And Carl Anthony Towns even toughed out what they’re calling now a grade two hamstring strain. That’s a little bit worrisome. Uh Ian Begley says Carl Anthony Towns has a grade two hamstring strain. Said it was important for him to play through it tonight. 19 points, 11 rebounds. Appreciated the support from the fans and his teammates. So Carl Anthony Towns toughed it out. Shot just 41% from the field. Didn’t shoot well from three, but he had a couple of big and one buckets. Had a steal as well. I liked what I saw from the big fella. And you win this game without Josh Hart. You win it without Mitchell Robinson. Um I get it. The Cavs were down some players as well. But it was exciting to see. And I thought Mike Brown, he coached his tail off. We’ll talk more about Mike Brown. We got to talk about Tyler Kick. One of the major takeaways for me coming out of this game was not that just Tyler Kick played and logged 13 minutes. He played some crunchtime minutes as well. And I thought he actually played a really good basketball game. Two assists, zero turnovers, three of six from the field. It almost seemed like he was hunting a shot, putting pressure on the rim. And I thought he did a really good job of stabilizing the offense when Jaylen Brunson sat down. One of the worries for me about this team was that backup point guard spot, especially when Malcolm Brogden retired. I don’t really know if I have all that much trust in Jordan Clarkson to do that, but like if Tyler Kick can give you more of what he gave you in game one, that is going to be a huge plus for this basketball team. Kick played the way he did. You saw Miles McBride played the way he did. And even Landry Shamut was really good in this basketball game. Two of three from downtown. I know he kind of got toyed with and lit up a little bit by Donovan Mitchell, but he competed, made him make some tough shots. It’s what he’s going to do. But man, your bench today was really, really good. And they contributed to that win. And that’s such a different vibe and different overall style of play than we saw. You get four points from Clarkson. You get seven from Kick, that’s 11. You get nine more from Landry Shamut, that’s 20. You get 15 from Deuce. You get 35 plus points off the bench from this New York Knicks team. I mean, you didn’t even really get anything from Gershan Yabaselli. You get four points from Jordan Clarkson. Like, we know the big guys can score. We know that they could do that. And if you’re going to have a team that could score off the bench in the fashion that the New York Knicks did, that just makes this team that much more dynamic. I I thought Mike Brown pushed the right buttons. I thought the lineups and the rotations were good. The minutes were low for this team. An exciting win overall. And like one of the things that pops off the page to me is Ariel Hawkport I thought was good in the limited action that he got to play. Had to fill in for Mitchell Robinson. You saw some Trey Jameson as well who I thought showed some good signs the defensive side of the floor. But overall, the shot selection, the shot diet for the New York Knicks was awesome. 40 threes, 42 threes would have been number two in the NBA last year. 40 would have been one, two, three, four, the fifth most threes of any team per game. Yeah, you only made him at a 35% clip. Uh Brunson going one and nine is going to dig that in. I mean, you take that away, you go 13 of 31, that’s almost 50%. I mean, Brunson’s not a one- n guy. Like, uh, he’s going to be able to knock down open shots. Things that I didn’t really love was the way the Knicks defended the three-point ball. Uh, 46 threes hoisted by Cleveland. They made 19 of them. That third quarter was really fueled by their ability to knock down the three. and Donovan Mitchell getting hot from downtown and really just getting hot overall. I think he had 18 plus points in that third quarter and like Cleveland has shooters that are going to be able to knock down shots. A new addition, I think Sam Merrill is new to their team. I don’t really even know. He was there last year. Um 19 points for him. That that that’s going to help a lot. I thought Evan Mobley shot the ball well. Four of eight from downtown. Larry Nance ended up making two threes as well. So, they had a lot of different guys hit shots and credit to them for making shots, but also I thought the New York Knicks gave them some easy shots as well. I mean, with no Mitchell Robinson on top of that, you did a pretty good job of neutralizing Jared Allen. A lot to be pumped up about this game. I’m fired up about this team. You’re 1 and 0 in the Mike Brown era. Everyone should be excited. Nothing but good vibes and good news coming out of this one. Low minutes, a lot of people played. You won the game. You pretty much dominated them. But there was about a seven minute stretch in the third quarter where you kind of effed around and you found out, but you played really well. Carl Anthony Town says he was a grade two quad strain. Uh said, “I didn’t want to disappoint the fans.” That’s cool. That’s cool, man. A lot of good stuff coming out of this one.
