to Heat Reddit, and to those visiting Heat reddit amid today's news of Terry Rozier's arrest – here are some key things to note, as things develop.

Terry Rozier's alleged gambling activity stems from his time with the Charlotte Hornets (2022-2023 season) – NOT from his time on the Miami Heat.

• There is reported / alleged, slight, indication that Charlotte was aware of Terry's alleged activity during his time there. Source: https://www.youtube.com/clip/UgkxWv0sUWuoIzNqvCaKLOl_ERc5pDYKY6mv

• Heat not commenting on Rozier. Miami's roster remains where it is. No cap relief at this time. Nothing changes for Heat except Rozier won't be around.

• NBA Statement: “We are in the process of reviewing the federal indictments announced today.  Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups are being placed on immediate leave from their teams, and we will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities.  We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority.” (So contract wasn't immediately voided.)

• If arrest prompts NBA to void his contract, Miami's payroll commitments would drop from $186 M (rounded off) to $159 M – -still above $154.6 M salary cap. The Heat would have flexibility to sign available bench players to fill spots 14 and 15 but could not absorb a traded salary into cap space because it would have no cap space even if Rozier's contract is voided by NBA.

• If NBA voids Rozier contract, the Heat would have the flexibility to use a $16.1M trade exception acquired in the Jimmy Butler trade. Miami could use that to acquire player or players earning up to 16.1 M before early February, without sending salary out.

• As The Athletic noted from the DOJ filing, one of the allegations against Rozier is that he told a person named Deniro Laster that he would take himself out of the first quarter of a March 2023 Hornets game with an injury so that Laster could bet on it.. Rozier removed himself, ensuring many people cashed in on unders on many prop bets, then didn't play again that season with what Hornets called a foot injury. Rozier's attorney has denied allegations.

• FBI says $200,000 in bets were placed after Rozier gave Laster the heads-up that he would be leaving the game early and they both later counted the money at Rozier’s home.

  1. Re: 2027 First Round Pick

**• Most likely**: The pick remains with Charlotte per the terms of the trade. The protections and conversion terms mean Charlotte will get the pick in 2027 if Miami’s pick falls outside the lottery or in 2028 unprotected if it doesn’t; Rozier’s legal issues do not automatically reverse that.

**• Less likely**: Miami and Charlotte could come to a negotiated amendment (e.g., Charlotte agrees to convert/change protections) but this would be voluntary, not mandated by a rule requiring a compensatory pick for Miami.

**• Very unlikely**: The league steps in and forces a “comp pick” to Miami or forces Charlotte to return the pick due to the arrest. There’s no precedent for that in the trade context with these kinds of player legal issues.

**• Key variable**: If Rozier’s contract is voided by the Heat (or the league) for misconduct, it could affect salary/cap implications, but that doesn’t necessarily undo the trade/pick compensation.

  2. I’m still wondering if the FBI knew this information and didn’t do anything for the past 2 years regarding Terry specifically.

  3. Did the team stay the night in Orlando? And he was wearing a Hornets hoodie today when booked

  4. The fact that a dude who has a 9 figure career playing a game would be willing to risk going to prison over a few hundred k just shows how badly money can ruin your mind.

For reference, Terry was getting paid over $300k per game in an 82 game season. Pissed away his nba career for less than 2/3 of a game check.

  5. We don’t know what he did or didn’t do on the Heat, just that the present investigation doesn’t speak to it. Just saying given these implications and his [terrible and seemingly inexplicable play](https://x.com/oldnbatweetz/status/1981325583255818673) on the Heat does leave some plausibility that they just haven’t uncovered a Heat part of this story.

  6. Barry confirming the Heat did not know about Rozier. The NBA did an investigation and cleared Rozier, that must mean there’s someone even bigger at the head of this. Barry appealing for the Heat himself to get their pick back, I don’t think the league will do that because it admits fault in a way by doing so. I think this will bring an even bigger fallout.
