“Liam Coen could coach every position” 🙌 | Lawrence on the impact of Jaguars head coach

Trevor Lawrence, my man, back in London where you belong, my friend. Back again. Year five. Year five. Been seeing you a lot. It’s been awesome. I know. I appreciate you sitting down with me, man. I’m a big fan. I’ve been watching a lot of things you’re doing on tape and I think you are having a tremendous year. I I can see the growth. Talk about the work you had to put in in the offseason to get to this point. Yeah, a lot of work. you know, first of all, just with the shoulder surgery and recovery and trying to get myself back in a position to feel healthy and strong and play again this year. So, that’s been going on since December. And then, you know, you add in the new staff and the new system. So, then putting a lot of work in just mentally and like retraining some things as far as my game and the way I think because it’s a new system. We’re doing some different things. Um, been working a lot, training my feet and my in the pocket, going through progressions, you know, getting better at that and being able to move and, you know, remain a passer, all those things. So, I think it’s starting to show up and it hasn’t been perfect. I, you know, I’m getting feel like I’m getting better every week and I feel like our offense is, you know, getting better. So, we just got to continue to get better. When this offense is clicking and it is flowing, what does that look like to you from the quarterback position? Yeah, I think when we’re playing fast, obviously the the, you know, run game has been a great thing for us. So, I think part of our identity is being tough, being able to run the ball. I mean, that keeps the that keeps the defense off balance and being able to it helps throw it helps you throw the ball because, you know, run run play action gets better. You know, they tighten up coverage on the outside because they play single high. You got to get an extra hat in the box and then you can throw the ball more. So, I think that is a big part of it for us is being able to run the ball effectively. And then, um, in the pass game is finding more explosive explosives, which we’ve been able to do the last few weeks. Early on it was a little bit of a struggle because we’re still trying to get on the same page and then I think it’s starting to click now. Um, so we just got to continue that growth. And you’re doing a lot on the line of scrimmage when you talk about the run game. You’re checking in and out of things. There’s a lot of trust that your head coach has put in your hands. Yeah, there’s a lot of trust. And I think just the way the system is is it’s it’s designed to, you know, try to get you in the best play possible, but in order to do that, it takes a lot of work from, I mean, the staff building the plan and putting it together and like what is the right look to run this run into and when do we need to get out of it? And then as players, it takes a lot of work to learn it and to, you know, be accountable for all those things that you have to know come game day because it’s, you know, you only got 40 second clock and you’re waiting on the play call, then you get up to the line, you got about 15 seconds and you got to make all these changes and bring the motions and guys got to know their stuff and I think every week we’ve gotten better at that. It hasn’t been perfect and there’s some stuff we can can clean up, but u guys have really bought into that because it’s helped us get us in the right place so we can have more success. You talked about this new staff earlier on and the things you have to learn, but now being here, coming back to London, this is an advantage, right, as a team coming together, bonding. Uh, what have you seen of the benefits of coming to London throughout all these years? You know, it’s it’s been good. I think the bonding aspect of it is is awesome. You spend a lot of time just hanging out with guys in the in the meal room, just hanging around the hotel, you know, walking around here. There’s a lot of I mean, just, you know, some great walks around this this gorgeous place, the Grove. I mean, they take care of us. So, it’s been it’s been awesome. I think just for regardless of how your season’s going, whether you’re having a good year, not a great year, it’s a good reset of just change of scenery, change of environment, guys get tighter. Um, and it’s just it’s it’s a fun time and and you know, every year we’ve enjoyed coming out here. Now, it’s early in the season, but talk about this team, man. You’ve had some big wins, you’ve bounced back after losses. What’s his identity so far? I think we’re still we’re still building it and proving it. you know, it’s uh we want our identity to be tough, you know, mentally, physically tough, attack people, play physical, and then I think that also talks to how you respond after a loss or a setback or whatever it is. It’s a long season and and I think we’re we get that as a team and we’re understanding that more and more as we go. And yeah, you know, you want to win them all. Um obviously at this point we’ve had a couple losses and we’re going to have to be able to bounce back and throughout the season that the teams the good teams do that. So big opportunity for us to bounce back this week after a tough loss last week. And it’s the NFL. You got to find a way to, you know, bounce back and play better the next week. Yeah. I’ve been watching quarterbacks all my life and I love the leadership of a good quarterback. One thing I really enjoy watching about you is how you are so cool and calm in chaos, my friend, because we are looking at you as a leader and you are showing us that you have control. How does that mindset stay that way during all the extremities and the craziness that happens during a game? Yeah, I just think that’s one just part of the way I’m wired is just more even kill kind of don’t get too high or too low, you know, any not anything crazy like that. And then I’ve also just realized that’s how I operate the best is when I’m more at that level. And I think for my teammates, like I I always know, you know, as a player, you know, when you have practices where everything is really tense and like people are yelling and screaming, it almost makes you tighten up. And so I’ve always felt like as a quarterback, you know, there has to be a sense of urgency and an expectation to do things the right way, but it can’t be, you don’t want guys to get tight around you. So I’ve always liked to try to keep the offense loose and, you know, not be too, you know, intense in that way. But, you know, there’s a kind of a balance with that. So you got a new head coach, new play caller, and something I think is so important on a team is the play caller and the playmaker. Well, you’re the playmaker, my friend. But how is this relationship been? And how does he design and teach in a way that is makes you the player you are at your best on the field? Yeah, I think you know he’s coach is really smart and the way he designs everything, he he’s very involved in the game planning. Obviously, he’s calling the play, so of course he’s going to be involved, but he just knows the why behind everything, and there’s a there’s a reason for it. And I think he’s really good at explaining that. And, you know, he could I’ve said this before, he could coach every position on offense. Like seeing him talk to the O line about the different IDs in the run game and talk to the receivers about how they’re going to block on the run, all these different things. And then also, you played quarterback and he understands what we’re doing obviously from quarterback perspective. So, we talk about progressions and just the way he communicates. I mean, he’s one of the best communicators I’ve been around. very upfront, honest, you know, will call out things that need to be called out, but also communicates with you. I think he has a good relationship with his players. He talks to us. Um, and like you said, obviously that relationship between quarterback and head coach is really important. And I think he’s done a great job of fostering that. And, you know, obviously it’s still early on for us. We’re still getting to know each other more and more, but the way we’ve been able to feed off each other and his energy, I think he’s brought a little bit more energy out of me at times. So, it’s been fun. Before the game, what’s in the ears? What are we listening to? How are we getting ready? Like, walk me through the warm-up, man. I I need to know. It’s going to be kind of a boring. I don’t really listen to music before games. I used to I used to listen to more music, but I don’t really uh I just don’t really do it anymore. I like to hear kind of the stuff around me. Really? Does it distract you at all? Anything? The only time I’ll have headphones on is in the locker room. If they’re like blaring music and I don’t love the song on, I’ll put mine on and just for the noise cancelling cuz I want to have a little bit more quiet before the game. Um, so I mean, that’s not a great answer. No. No. What are you what are you thinking about though? Like what’s what’s happening? Thinking a lot. You know, sometimes I’ll I’ll have like a devotional like I’ll read something like that or when I first get in, I’ll maybe check over my call sheet, just skim over quick little things or notes from the week, like broad notes of just, you know, not try to get too in the weeds because at that point the haze in the barn, I just want to clear my mind. But I’ll just review a couple things really early when I get in the locker room. And then as it gets closer, I just try to quiet it down. And that’s really it because I know everything’s up here already. I don’t need to try to press and find stuff like I, you know, just get ready to play. All right, for my last question, this is a tough one, man. You golf a lot in the offseason, right? Yeah. Okay. Is this calm, cool, collective Trevor Lawrence the same guy on the golf course? That’s all I want to know. No, I probably have uh I I’m still pretty calm, but I probably have a lot worse self-t talk on the golf course than anywhere else because that it it’ll it beat you up out there, man. Golf fans around the world understand how you feel, man. No doubt. No doubt. I appreciate it, man. Can’t wait to see you on the field. You have been balling. I love watching you on tape every single week. Getting better. Stay aggressive. When pressures in your face, you don’t even flinch, my friend. Appreciate you, Jason.

  1. Couldn’t disagree with Trevor more. As a QB (or position of power best in the world)… there’s expectations that need to be met. A sense of urgency is necessary to produce winning results. Being chill and upbeat in a time to grind is not it. Wide receiver running like a lunatic not breaking on time? Get on his ass! Tackle acting like a statue?…. Get on his ass. Most importantly, DO NOT ACCEPT FAILURE. You may never have another chance. Especially in the NFL. That was extremely discouraging to me hearing that.
