Dan Wilson Responds to Seattle Mariners ALCS GM7 LOSS vs. Toronto, Future of Seattle Mariners
Yeah, Dan, you’re you go into the bottom of the seventh, you’re nine outs away from the World Series. Things kind of went a ride. Can you just walk us through all the pitching decisions there and what led into them? Yeah, I mean, uh, Brian was throwing the ball so well. You know, first of all, George, I thought threw the ball excellent. Um, and then Brian picked up right where where George left off and and, uh, you know, gave us a, uh, a good spot to be in and and, um, you know, after the walk, you know, hoping to get the ground ball, which we did, but, it just found a hole. Um and then uh you know knew MZ was going to bunt there and and um you know uh Bazardo’s been the guy that’s that’s gotten us through those situations, those tight ones, especially in the pivot role and um you know that’s that’s where we were going at that point. How much did you consider going to Munoz and why did you like Bazardo better than Munoz in that situation? Well, I mean, I think uh like like we said, Zardo’s been doing it all season long and has been so con consistent at it and um he’s done such a good job all year and uh um you know, we felt really comfortable with him out there, the way he’s been throwing the ball, especially in this series and and um you know uh it was a good spot for him. Up front on your left, Daniel Dan, just what was your message to the team after after the game? uh just to hold up their heads um and and and um you know to understand what kind of a season they had. I mean I know this stings and it there’s no question that it’s going to sting um but the kind of season they had um you know doing things that no team in this organization has ever done. Um and and you know knocking on the door of a World Series. um all that uh you know it’s it’s it’s due to to how hard they’ve worked, how hard they’ve played all season long. Uh all the times they’ve come back, all the times they’ve bounced back. Um it’s a special team in there and um you know uh it’s just uh uh it’s a shame we had to come out on the on the wrong side of this one. And Tyler in the third row um Dan understanding that Bazardo has been great. Um Muno’s not not getting in until after you’d lost the lead. Does that does that stick with you at all? I mean, he he seemed to have a lot of rest. Was great this postseason. Yeah, I mean um you know, you make your decisions and and uh you know, sometimes um uh you know, you have to live and die with it and and uh you know, I think uh again, the way Zardo has thrown the ball all season long, we were comfortable with where we were and um you know, uh it just uh again didn’t didn’t go our way. Adam on your right. Dan, Dan, you’ve given so much of your career and your life to this organization. You have the perspective that a lot of people don’t. Just what are the emotions now that that it has uh has come to an end here? Um, you know, it’s it’s it’s very very mixed. Um, you know, disappointed, obviously, frustrated. Um, uh, but, you know, incredibly proud of what those guys have done. Um, incredibly proud of what they’ve done all season long. Um and uh that the the team that’s in there uh you know um you just can’t you just can’t say enough good things about the way those guys have played and um you know when when you look at uh you know um the pieces that were added you’re so you’re grateful to to the organization uh to Jerry and Justin for for putting all of it together. Um, you know, just uh it was just a an outstanding season, a great series here. Um, but uh, you know, it’s tough to come up on the short end. Brady on your left. Dan, you guys lost in a similar way in 2000, but then also came back in 2001 and had a great year. Maybe how do you go about kind of processing it and then maybe using it as motivation going into the next season? Yeah, I mean uh you know I think all of us now have had a taste of of how close we can get and and um you know how good this team can be and um so I think you know uh once you get that um that’s what you’re that’s what you’re shooting for again the next year and and uh you know I know um that will continue to be the goal. That was the goal this year. It will continue to be the goal is to is to get to that final step and um you know this year we we’re one game short. Ryan and then Tyler. Dan, you had traffic on Bieber early, lots of hits off of him, but you just only came away with the handful of runs. Did Were you Did you feel like you were kicking yourself a little bit because you didn’t add on when you had the opportunities to when you had a lot of guys on base? Um, you know, I thought we had some good at bats again today. Um, and and and you know, Julio and and Cal going deep was big. Um, you know, to to give us, you know, some some lift and and and offensively, I thought we you know, we swung the bat pretty well. we just, you know, at times not able to get um like you said the the the kind of the lead to open it up, but um you know, where we were with our pitching, you know, usually we’re in a good spot and and um you know, it uh I thought offensively we did the things we needed to do. Got Tyler and then Daniel with Springer coming up, he’s got such a great October pedigree. Is there any thought to to walking him and setting up a double play or I mean it’s it’s a tough call. You know again it’s a tough decision. You don’t want to you know put that go ahead run it at first and and then that also introduces Vlatty into the equation if you don’t get the double play. So um you know uh again the way the way we looked at it was you know we were going to go at George up front your left. Daniel Dan, was there any consideration to leave Brian in in that moment just given the success that he had against Springer? Maybe even go to Brash or was that off the table just given that he threw so many pitches yesterday? Yeah, I mean I think um you know he had given us you know such a such a good outing there and and uh it was time to turn it over. We thought that you know to to the uh to the leverage guys that are in those situations and and um you know that’s uh that’s what went into that decision. far back on your left hand. Annie, was was going to Woo always part of the plan today? And um what did you like about bringing him in there in the fifth when he did? Yeah. Um you know, that was a big part. Um you know, we had hoped that uh you know, he was going to be rested and he was and and felt good and uh you know, came in. We we thought it was a good spot. Um you know, for him, a good clean inning and and uh but you know, he he came in and threw the ball extremely well. Um and uh you know, I thought handled the the lineup very well. Do a couple last ones. Brady on your left. Dan, you’ve spoken about Cal a lot this year, but kind of just maybe one last thought on on his year as a whole and what he’s meant and his growth to the organization. Yeah, I mean uh you know an organizational player, you know, an all-time player and and uh when you look at what he has done um you know numbers wise uh for the organization uh but in Major League Baseball in general um you know setting all-time records for you know uh for what he did for with his home runs and and again what he does behind the plate and all that he puts into it. um you know, he he’s a guy that uh um you know, you you just love to have on on your team. He’s a guy that you build your organization around and um he is a leader and um you know, he has put together uh an incredible season and and uh yeah, I’m sure there’s more to come. I’ll finish up with Ryan. Dan, like there is uh you look out on the field in over the first six innings when you had the lead, you know, Brian, George, two guys you drafted. Cal, a guy you drafted. Julio, a guy that came up from the international system. There’s a lot of homegrown talent. Do you feel like there is a core there with a few, you know, minor additions or tweaks that it’s going to continue this kind of upward trajectory to get back here and maybe go beyond? Yeah, I mean I think that’s, you know, a testament to the job that, you know, um, they have done in the front office, you know, um, Jerry, Justin, Andy, uh, you know, from from scouting, um, and, you know, Scott Hunter and and the scouting department that the people they bring in that how they develop them, um, and they get them ready for the big leagues and and again, it’s it’s a tribute to the to the entire organization and everybody that pours into guys and and uh, to to see that many, you know, homegrown players um, on the field at one time is is, you know, it’s it’s unique. and it’s rare. Um, and uh, you know, these guys have been developed to play in these in these circumstances and they’ve they’ve been able to deliver on on a consistent basis. It’s it’s been uh, really good. And, um, you know, that’s what that’s kind of what sets you up for the future as you go forward is is um, you know, their ability to to stay with this organization and and uh, continue to do what they’ve been doing. I think the Mariners should blow up the team. They had an 80% chance to win the ALCS and they screwed up. Dan Wilson should be fired. Trade half the roster, bring up young talent, develop them. I don't care if it takes 20 more years but hopefully the Mariners can win a World Series in 2065.
Im a met fan. Completely unbiased opinion. Thats 1 of the worst pitching decisions in playoff history. This isnt a tuesday nite in may and u bring in ur “pivot” guy, ITS GAME 7 OF THE LCS!!!! Biggest game youll probably ever manage. And it was the top of the order! That was the season, that inning, that moment. Worry about the 9th inn in the 9th inn. Absolutely inexcusable decision from wilson. Go down with your best, he went down with what, his 3rd best?
Ive never gotten over game 7 of the 2006 nlcs, mariner fans will never get over this 1.
What Karma, you cheer when a guy gets hit by a pitch who is in obvious pain. Pay back is a bitch. You have a great team not sure about the fans.
It’s game 7? Senor smoke time or even Castillo. He has to be fired.
IT's fucking GAME 7, USE YOUR FUCKING BEST pitchers!!!!!!!!!!!!
People blaming Dan for this don’t know baseball…you can’t expect to beat the Jays in a winner take all by only scoring 3 runs…we needed 1-9 to win the series. We got 1-6…bottom of the order was atrocious.
Jays fan here – Much respect to the Mariners and their fans. What an amazing ALCS, couldn't have been tighter, comes down to a decisive game 7 and both teams stars showed up. Raleigh and Julio with massive homers, Springer. This is what baseball is all about. Keep your heads up and all the best in 2026, your time will come.
I was pulling for the M's this game. Dan Wilson absolutely is to blame for this loss. Leaving Woo in another inning was disastrous. Sticking with Woo, then taking him out and not letting him face that cheater Springer was another boneheaded move by Wilson. And bringing in Bazardo was the icing on the cake. I feel bad for Mariner fans.
I just knew Springer was going to hit that 3 run dinger. Bringing Bazardo in when he pitched two innings the day before was a bad decision. Then Julio striking out on a pitch three feet out of the zone to end the game with Cal on deck makes this loss extremely frustrating.
Get out of this clubhouse. They say he is a "players coach" imo that is not what you want. Iwouldnt want the players to be homies with coach. They clearly dont listen to him? The whole yr it felt like this team is playing with no coaching. And i dont think he made one good decision this post season
I don't put no more than 5% of this on dan. Bazzardo has been the guy all year. Bazzardo blew it.
He should of brought munoz in once woo lost the first 2. Pray he gets out of 7th w lead ( even 1 run) and then pitch him the 8th. Then have brash / bazardo close it out
Or
Take woo out and bring brash in for a clean inning
Hopefully Gino has his bags packed inhaler has been given a paycheck to the amount of his liking to stay in Seattle. Naylor needs to stay at all costs
Needs to be fired. What a joke of a manager
I cant fucking stand dan wilson
Dan, just own up to your absolute avoidable mistake pulling Kirby. It’s all we want to hear from you, man up to it and we will be happy.
Shame the Mariner's didnt make it for the first time to the World Series
The Jays got their revenge from Game 5 after that boneheaded moved by Schneider. This series should have been over in Game 6!!
Dan Wilson is a nepo manager and cost us the game. No one with any sense would've made that move.
Wilson over managed a few games in this series; last night was the worst. He panicked with Woo and ignored the fact that Bazardo pitched two innings the night before and was the best matchup for Toronto. Seattle has had some managers that have made some boneheaded mistakes. This is near the top.
Dan was the only person in the world that thought it was time to yank Woo for Bazardo.
Need a real manager
Dan the douche
If Dan gets fired I am sad to say I won’t feel bad, we got this far in spite of his actions and not because.
Why did you pull Kirby when he was pitching so good?!
220% Dans Fault, and I am a huge fan of Dan
Disgrace to the city of Seattle. What a joke. Fire him already!!
Maybe next year or another 50 years.
Dan mismanaged and Bazardo choked it is what it is.
Classic Mariners baseball at its finest lmao fuck me sideways
The best way to save face is for Wilson to willingly step down. He tried it, he got them further than any past manager, he was out of his league as a postseason manager, he failed the team. Now wisely step away, please, proud of what you achieved, and let the front office do actual interviews this time around for an experienced skipper.
Dan Wilson is great and so is his team. Great job Mariners. It was exciting. I hope they keep the same players next year.
Dan the Man," just aged about TEN YEARS!
I think the team over achieved ! I dont think they can get back !
It was a great year especially the last month of regular season. 7 game series 🎉
The coach dropped the ball on that one. If you look at the stats vs Munoz, Toronto batters were something like 0-27 vs Munoz!!
Look up batter vs pitcher stats and you will see!!
they got 2 hits off him in game 7. current stats now 2-30 batting avg. .067 vs Munoz!
Blue Jays batters are a combine 8-35 vs Bazardo with 2 HR, it made zero sense to bring him in that spot!
That is why Seattle has never been to a world series , because of decisions like that!
What a fucking loser.
Dan Wilson repeatedly said "Bazardo has been doing it all season long" as a reason for using him. Danny-boy, the ALCS 7th game is not a regular season game. You need to watch more post-season elimination games to learn from other managers. Yes, you helped the team to go this far in post-season, but you also caused losses to many games that otherwise could have placed the team in #1 seed.
My honest prediction: If Dan Wilson is the manager for the 2026 season, he will be fired before the all-star game.
