This approach, as I’ve said all along has been disjointed. I still like where we are currently at though, it may be more about managing expectations than anything else, because we’re on a patient path.
We were aggressive in free agency when we should have been patient and now patient this far into the rebuild.
Yzerman said in a recent interview that they consider the rebuild over when they are consistently making the playoffs, but I’m not sure how they are going to help this group do that apart from graduating draft picks.
As I said before, impact free agents are limited… there are seemingly very few of them, and there is competition for the limited few and no guarantees you get the one you want.
So… it’s logical to look to a trade, but I’m not sure we’ll see a big one this year or even this summer
We’re in a chicken or the egg situation, need to make playoffs for Steve to deem worthy to give picks and prospects to trade for an impact player, need the impact player or two to make playoffs.
Hopefully this group breaks through, and breaks through this year, that’s what we’d all prefer. They can still do it, it’s just one shitty road trip. But the depth is a huge issue.
Maybe it’s better to consider this year 1 of the rebuild and just go from here, looks like a bright future.
We can bank on internal improvement to get better, but as we wait patiently for that improvement we end up paying for it and not taking advantage of ELC windows, we missed Ray and Mo’s, soon to miss Ed and Marco’s, hopefully we can find a way to take advantage of Finnie/ASP/MBN ELCs… or I guess just sit here with $10M+ in cap space every year with big holes all over the roster, because we’re gonna need to win to attract free agent and trade/extend options that want to win.
