Sharks Defeat Rangers In Overtime | New York Rangers

On a night that should serve as a measuring stick for how no other games should be played. The Rangers now lose their fifth straight on home ice to a team that had not won all season. 65 in overtime. San Jose Sharks with the win. Hi everyone. Welcome to the Mercedes-Benz Rangers postgame show. Alongside Dave Starman, I’m John Gnome. And this was a night where youth served a painful lesson to the Rangers because it was the combination of Mlin Celbrini and Will Smith. Nine points between them and they teamed up for the winner just under two minutes into overtime. Well, we all know Gabe Perau and how exciting Ranger excited Ranger fans are about him. That was his linemate at Boston College. Will Smith was a dynamic player. And then you look at San Jose, four goals between two guys who won the Hobie Baker Award as the best player in college hockey. As San Jose enters the zone here in overtime, they get a play to the net and they just move the puck around. It was a little bit of a flyby in the corner here. Just lack of good contact and then all of a sudden Smith is just set up in a really good spot. I felt for Shurkin tonight because Shist Sturken got beat by a couple of goals tonight. At least I should say three or four goals tonight where that puck was in the net before he had a chance to move. He got left out to dry a little bit too often. What a play by San Jose to get this thing going. and their speed took the game over and it ended up becoming another Ranger loss on Garden Ice. And when you consider what has happened so far in this young season, who would have ever guessed that we would see what we have seen? The Rangers tie their franchise record, which was set in 1943. 1943 was the worst season in Rangers history, and that’s because most of the players were gone for World War II. Sixth loss in nine games to begin the season. Chester Sturken six goals against tonight after allowing only seven in his first six games. Unbelievable to think that the San Jose Sharks would come into the Garden and do that tonight. Let’s begin the reaction after the game. Here’s Mika Zabanagette. Obviously a tough loss in overtime, but you did come back from a handful of deficits. What’s your overall impressions after losing this one? Not good enough. Uh overall, um we have a chance to win in overtime. We don’t. But uh u we put ourselves in a in a bad spot I think after the first and and u u um just not good enough. Your defense has been spectacular all season, especially at home. What happened tonight on D? I mean um they get a couple power play goals and and um I think just um just some some breakdowns that uh that we uh that we will address and talk about. But um yeah, just not not good enough. You all encouraged by the fact that you scored five goals on home ice. You only had one goal on home ice uh all year before tonight. Yeah, we didn’t win so doesn’t really matter, right? Yeah. I mean, shots from top of the crease, hash marks, you know, guys just on the inside and you know, I don’t care how good your goalie is, you’re letting up onetimes from from there. They’re they’re going to score a lot of the time as NHL. So, like I said, I think we just got what we deserved tonight. Your zone has been so effective all year on DE. Was it a breakdown in structure tonight on the in the DZone? Uh yeah. Yeah, I think exactly that. I think like I said, guys, you know, left alone and in the top of the crease and and hitting one-times, it’s, you know, you’re not going to win many games doing that. Cabbrini scored in the final seconds of period one and in the final seconds of period two. How would you explain what happened in those situations? Same thing. Breakdowns. I mean, end of the period, you got to, you know, get out of there and, you know, try and keep that momentum going. And, uh, yeah, I think five and 8 seconds, like I said, just just those things can happen. Are you at all encouraged by the fact you guys scored five goals? Um, I wouldn’t say, you know, there’s many encouraging things that came out of that game for us. Um, yeah, it’s good to score, but if you’re not going to play D, you’re, you know, played 10 times better when we weren’t weren’t winning games, but but keeping the puck out of our net, you know, maybe we got frustrated with chances not going in and and veered away from that, but um, no, I wouldn’t say uh, you know, encouraging is is uh, you know, many things that came out of that game. Interesting words from Adam Fox. Not much that would be considered positive. You heard Fox and Zabanagad both you use the word breakdowns and there were way too many of them. So break down what the breakdowns were. There was there was a lot you’ve heard the expression soft ice and soft ice is where there’s just ice that’s not defended somewhere near the net and I thought in the first period San Jose was in soft ice for 20 minutes and they got a lot of great a chances and wound up scoring on a couple of them. When you take a look at the goals that got scored there were a lot of soft ice goals but early on in this period San Jose really took it to the Rangers. Their forch check was dynamic. They had the Rangers on their heels. They were winning races. They were playing with good puck support. Then they get a puck down below the goal line. Watch them go to work here. This is all the ground game for San Jose. They win races. They’re inside their checks. And there’s the soft ice that I’m talking about for that first goal by Misa. The San Jose just had way too many great A’s uncontested early. And if not for Shirka, it might have gotten out of hand a little faster. Here’s another scenario. Puck goes to the front of the net off the rebound. It goes in off a Ranger. It’s an unfortunate play, but look at San Jose numbers in the crease and look at the Ranger defense toe caps towards the net. You and I talked about in the pregame, you want to defend with the toe caps up ice, right? But a lot of times tonight, Rangers defenseman would turn inward and that didn’t help them in terms of finding out what was behind them. Yeah. So, that was in the first six plus minutes of the game. Two nothing Sharks. Rangers were sort of chasing the game. They caught it. They took the lead, but it was a Mlin Celibbrini special tonight. I mean, we’ve seen what this kid can do. This was his second career hattick. a fivepoint night for a kid has who as I said on the pregame show between Misa Celibbrini and Will Smith. They can’t go out and celebrate this after the game because they’re not old enough to they didn’t play this game in Canada, right? Yeah. Right. In certain parts. Yeah. But when you talk about Celibbrini, I remember at the Frozen Four a couple years ago when he was still with BU and the discussion was already going on who’s the better player, Mlin Celbrini or Connor Bard and people were like, well Bard’s got 60 in the NHL already. Celbrini hasn’t gotten there yet. But there was still that talk of how special a player among all the scouts they thought Celbrini was. His ability to pass the puck, his ability to shoot the puck, his ability to use his feet, he trusts his feet and his hands implicitly. But the other thing about Celibbrini, I think that goes under the radar is the fact that he is that smart for that young a player. And even back to his college days, you can see he had an innate ability to search out open ice to go behind a play to come back into it. He reminds me a lot of Cole Caulfield because it’s exactly how Cole Cfield made his hay getting to the NHL and staying there. So, if you’re in that Rangers dressing room and so much of the talk for so many of the home games before this was, how are we going to put a puck in the net on home ice? Then you come out and you score five, but you still don’t walk off the ice with a win. Where’s your mindset after this game? Your mindset, it’s going to settle in. Your mindset is yes, we scored five, and that’s a really good thing. But it’s not going to erase the fact that you gave away a game on home ice to a team that realistically you should have beaten. Now, you came back twice, so that’s a good thing. I think the coaching staff has some things to sell when they talk to the team tomorrow before they leave for Calgary. But I think the bitter taste in the mouth is going to be having defended for so long so well for so long. All of a sudden, that started to break down. Backside coverage disappeared a little bit. rebounds were there, lack of clears, lack of getting the puck 200 feet where they needed to. Those are some of the things that unfortunately come out of this. Yeah. And that’s some of the things the Rangers are going to have to think about over the next 48 hours before they head to Calgary and face the Flames on

The Rangers are still looking for their first win in The Garden after the Sharks earn their first win of the season in a 6-5 San Jose win in overtime. Macklin Celebrini had 5 points, including a hat trick, in the Sharks win. The Rangers look to bounce back on the road on Sunday night in Calgary to take on the Flames.

  1. don't see the light at the end of this tunnel… The most depressing iteration of the team since "the letter". Panarin's almost out, he's not signing another contract with Rangers, I'd give Shesterkin an option to leave to a contending team. He mustn't make the same mistake as Lundqvist did. I'll be always rooting for him and I hope he wins it somewhere else, he's definitely not winning it in NY. Same thing with Fox. They need to let him go. The rest – they can let them go for free.

  2. In o.t..both our saviors panarin and jt miller…slept walk…screwing us again…rangers will have no choice to trade the turnover machine panarin…jt..has hit the wall fellas…..let the rebuild begin

  3. Why in the world is artemi panarin on the ice the end of the second. I can't stand this team anymore they're 0 and 5 at home I'm sick of it and now we have Mike Sullivan coach I guess what is Sullivan doing that's positive tell me what Solomon has done so far that you like how about nothing

  4. I'm not good enough so f**** sick of hearing not good enough not good enough you f**** lost in the f**** sharks you scored five goals and lost get this f**** general manager out of here and Adam Fox is going to drive me insane Adam Fox can you make a play it over time instead of screwing around with the f*** did you ever shoot the damn Park between the circles and the passing the damn park down to a low bad angle shot every time he drives me nuts stop being so f**** deliberate and just shoot the damn thing what a f**** embarrassment the only team in the NHL that hasn't won a f**** game and you guys give up six goals what a disgrace

  5. Mike Sullivan you have your head up your a***** what the f*** is Panera and doing on the ice and the end of the second period what's your best defensive forward on the ice cream dumb f*** oh I guess that's right you don't have Sidney Crosby f**** Malkin bail your ass out now

  6. Okay breakdowns he scored two goals in the last seconds of two periods because this f**** team does the same s*** every f**** you how many times do we see goals in the last second and this team can never score at the end of the game when they pull their goalie they never can score I'm tired of it get this f**** general manager out of here now he's useless he doesn't know what the f*** he's doing he has no clue he has no clue what he is doing

  7. Dave talks about soft ice why is this always a problem with the rangers why because the rangers are f**** soft all the time and they need to get bigger and stronger drafting tiny stupid forwards

  8. The rangers are so bad. I said to a colleague at lunch who was looking forward to winning that he should be careful about the sharks. He is a moron like a large portion of rangers fans

  9. It so embarrassing what in the world 🌎 is going on 😡 they dint even need to make the playoffs to be dominated by a 0️⃣ win 🦈 and guess what they got more wins than the ✈️

  10. They need to stop bringing in retread coaches and go with the younger guys. I do like Sully but things are changing. Look at Pittsburgh this season. Crazy

  11. Coaching! Why does Magic Mike get a pass at every turn for this abomination??? He was FRONT and CENTER during roster construction. Now he acts like he boarded a bus full of strangers in Syberia. Drury and Sullivan are terrible. Just bring up the farm, and trade that scrub Lafeeniere already

  12. Here we go this team is back to where they ended last season they play with a who cares attitude. I watched Fox and in my opinion he knows what’s going on. Lafreniere is no comparison to Celebrini this is how a number one is suppose to play.
