Jaylen Brown on sports betting: “That whole world was introduced a couple of years ago and I don’t think they took players into consideration … we don’t benefit from any of the profits, but we gotta deal with a lot of the extra negativity and scrutiny behind all the gambling.”

Does he know that the salary cap is determined by league revenue? God knows I wouldn’t think it was worth the hassle if I were a player, but they’re definitely benefitting from the profits.
It’s nothing but a money grab and the league is complicit. Silver wishing for regulation is a bunch of pandering. The league is not helpless here.
It’s almost as if gambling is a degenerate activity, to society in general.
Players benefit massively from the profits. Where do you think the ad revenue is for that new TV deal you get 50 percent of?
You don’t profit? Your $300 mil contract was paid for in part by that gambling, revenue is way up thanks to it and you share revenue with the owners 50-50.
Don’t forget the part where the players agreed to it in the CBA.
I mean, the players’ salaries are higher than they’ve ever been, even when adjusted for inflation. They’re direct beneficiaries of the league’s partnerships and marketing, a large part of which comes from gambling.
Individuals are getting caught for making bad decisions. It is their fault, and theirs alone.
If you’ve ever gone to a game you will hear guys yelling at players to get a rebound or score and you can tell they have them in their prop bet, it’s deranged how angry fans get at players for losing their bets
Multiple players like Booker and Tyrese have gone on tv or podcasts and spoken about fans giving them hate in comments or in person for blowing their bets
Won’t somebody please think of the multi millionaires
It does suck, but players get 50% of league revenue. The gambling sites pay a lot to advertise during NBA games. That’s league revenue.
I don’t think it’s worth that additional income, but let’s not act like they aren’t getting a piece, no matter how small…
The players benefit directly from it. Where do you think “basketball related income” comes from, Jaylen?
Gambling undoubtly drives ad revenue, increased viewership and deeper engagement with the broader nba media ecosystem. All of that translates to BRI for the league, and NBA players get 49-51% per the terms of the CBA.
Why do you think role players make more than super stars did 15 years ago, even after accounting for inflation?
To be clear, I am not saying sports betting is a good thing. I’m just saying it’s a little oblivious to make this statement when you’re making $53m a year and you’re not even the best player on your own team. It’s like complaining that capitalism is unfair when you’re literally in the 1%.
They 100% benefit from the profits lmao
Never gamble on the things you love, people
It will only poison the well
oh no. Won’t somebody think of the rich players making millions of dollars?
Counterpoint: they definitely do benefit
Yes they don’t get direct profits from the sports books (he can’t be saying that they should be getting them right?) but they do have a revenue share with the NBA so increased engagement with the NBA does translate to more money for players.
Definitely agree though gambling is an epidemic and it is horrible that players get abuse due to it
The players to generate from the profits with the sponsorships though.
Players should have a say in whether they themselves can opt out of being bet on. Avoid all the negativity and the betting allegations
I would say being well paid on and off the court (endorsement $) for putting a ball through a hoop is enough compensation.
The lack of self awareness to say they don’t benefit from the profits is insane. The Sportsbooks are fueling advertising and sponsorships to teams and TV networks, those TV networks are paying record amounts for broadcast rights, and the cap is exploding paying the players expeonentially more than they ever have. What do you mean you don’t benefit from the profits?
Dawg the one nice thing about my brain is that it doesn’t derive any pleasure from gambling. The shit just isn’t fun to me, thank god.
It’s almost as if sports betting, and sports betting advertising, negatively impacts society as a whole.
They need to get gambling out of sports. There should never be a gambling ad in a sports show, stream, game etc. they also need to be more harsh on the penalties with players throwing games.
With the skyrocketing prevalence of gambling and gambling advertisements over the last few years, is anyone really surprised by the consequences? An entire generation of gambling addicts is emerging and sports is becoming less about the product. Now there are gambling apps you’ve never heard of with entirely AI produced ads. Slop on top of slop. I think it’s only going to get worse as there’s too much already invested in this industry.
It’s a complete degeneracy and a symptom of a failing culture and society.
Gambling is a scourge for all professional sports!
Also, gambling ruins lives. NBA owners and players should be content with being incredibly wealthy.
Adam Silver is genuinely the worst commissioner in the history of sports. He is a scourge upon US sports and should be looked at with nothing but disdain. He’s a soulless ghoul
Not benefiting from any of the profits is such a dogshit take from the NBA’s premier fake-smart guy.
These sportsbetting deals have increased the league’s revenue which has lead to these $70M a year supermax deals. EVERYTHING done by the league in one way or another that contributes to their revenue benefits the players.
Fuck out of here with that take. I agree it’s lame as hell for fans to complain to the players when their bet doesn’t hit, but don’t spin this as you aren’t getting anything in return.
