I’m Nick Morgan and I am joined by the nineto-f5 to my Jolene Greg Steven. Greg, welcome in my friend. It’s a long night, Nick. It was a long, long night. Did you at least have fun at the game until 54 seconds left in it? Yeah. Yeah. H we have a lot to get into about this one. as we mentioned off the top, the worst sevengame start in Tampa Bay Lightning history. Um, the Tampa Bay Tribune pointed that out. Uh, and you know what, Greg, there there’s a couple of stars that we have to call out and we are going to discuss going into this weekend whether our hands have now moved from over the panic button to on the panic button, ready to press down. A lot to get to on today’s show. Uh before we get started, do want to mention today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create an account, and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. Well, they managed to find a way to snatch defeat from the Jaws of Victory, Greg. Yeah. And you know what the first sign of it was to me at the game? As soon as I saw Emil Libberg go to the box, I was like, “Ah, we’re going to choke this.” It’s It’s just I mean, it it’s starting to feel like we’re saying the same things every single show. And that’s that’s bad from a content planning standpoint, but also bad for the team because it says these mistakes aren’t getting fixed, right? and and it just feels so obvious certain areas of their game right now that could and should be corrected and and it just feels like it’s not happening. And look, I also think some guys are just generally cold right now. Like, don’t get me started on Brandon Hegel. He looks terrible. I’m sorry. I love him. He’s like one of my favorite players, but these seven games, he has not been good at all. And I just I don’t think there’s any way to defend him, honestly. I don’t know. Yeah. I mean, there’s a lot to get into and obviously to me, there’s also some positives that I think you can take away from this game if you’re breaking down certain aspects of it. But at the end of the day, a loss is a loss and and John Cooper said as much, and we’re going to get to all that in in just one second. First though, for those of you who weren’t able to catch up with last night’s game, we’re going to break it down for you real fast. As Greg mentioned, ah, same old song and dance for the Tampa Bay Lightning. We have Emil Lilloughberg going to the box. The penalty leads to a Frank Nazar power play goal. Puts the Hawks up one- nothing. Bolts would battle back in the second. Nikita Cucher off. Great individual effort. Gets around the defense. Misses the net, but does get his own rebound. Fires it back to the point. Jake Gensel tips it in to make it 1-1. Then as Aerosmith says again, Greg, same old story, same old song dance. Offensive zone turnover, this time by Ryan Mcdana leads to a two-on-one chance for the Blackhawks. Ryan Donado scores to make it 2-1. Matt Truck though would get some redemption for himself. One time shot off the coov pass to make it 2-2. That is the end of the second period. Back and forth third period, good chances by both teams. I also thought some good saves from Andre Vasilki and Spencer Knight. uh in this stretch right here. But gotta channel that Grand Theft Auto meme, Greg. Ah crap. Here we go again. Less than a minute left. Bolts turnover. Offensive zone leads to a twoon one. Andre Vasilleski makes a great initial stop, but Ryan Donado absolutely nobody marking him as he gets back. We’re gonna talk more about that play on in just one bit, but he gets the rebound, puts the Blackhawks up 3-2. Lightning had one last chance, but Greg in what seems like a perfect metaphor for this season. Nikita Kudro onetime shot just nails Jake Gensel straight in the leg. Yensel’s lying in the ice in pain like Hans Mullman getting hit by the football. Cutout standing over him with the look of a Russian Urkl. Did I do that? Lightning fall three-2, one4-2 as Tampa Bay.com pointed out, the worst sevengame start in franchise history. Greg, we’re going to start by giving our plus minus. What’s your positive and negative from this game? My positive was shot volume, I think. And that’s my only positive. So that’s why it’s that because my negative is I was going to say special teams, but I think it’s really just power play. Uh 0 for four on the power play is horrendous, but I have a lot of other negatives, too, but we’ll get to those. What are yours? Um, my plus is Nikita Cooerov because what we saw from him on those first two goals is exactly what we want to be seeing from Nikita Cuchov. That drive, that effort, that nose for the net. Uh, misses that initial shot on that first goal. Um, honestly probably should have put it away, but the effort to get it back and the wherewithal to know where the players are coming behind them sets that up. Also, second goal is is able to dip behind the the other opponent’s red line, draw defenders in and get that to Ryan Mcdana. Great play. These are the kinds of plays you want to be seeing from Nikita Coutroof. So, Greg, can you guess what my minus is? Nikita Coutroof. It is also Nikita Cuchov because look at the last play. Look at the play that the Blackhawks scored on. It’s Nikita Cucherov that gets the initial turnover. has the puck pretty much picked right clean off his off his stick from I think that was Nazar. Um I’ll have to go back and and watch. I think it was two. It was either or actually I think it was it was Lucas Reichel. Um so he he gets the puck just stolen right off his stick in the offensive zone. Goes the other way. Twoonone chance and Andre Vaslovki makes a great save. Watch Nikita Cout backchecking on that play. Nikov is skating like it’s the end of pregame warm-ups and Ryan Donado is just blaring in right behind him. And you don’t see Cutro start to skate again until he realizes, “Oh crap, that’s Ryan Donado right in front of me.” Nikita Coutro puts effort in on that play to get back to get his man. It’s still two. He gets to that puck first. Yes. or at the very least he gets a stick on it and it’s not a clean shot, right? That’s the kind of stuff that drives me wild about Nikita Coo this season. That was a preventable goal that if Nikita Coutro just put more effort into that play, more effort into backchecking, more awareness of where everyone else is on the ice, you’re going to get that puck and you’re going to send this to overtime with the very least a point for the Lightning. That’s the kind of stuff that pisses me off. And that is the kind of stuff, Greg, that really wants me put to really wants to make me put Nikita Cooch off under the microscope right now. Yeah. No, I mean, look, he’s made a lot of terrible turnovers so far this season. It’s almost like he he is overly confident, but he also always is self-critical. It’s weird that he has like this conflicting um sort of vibe right now cuz I feel like if he was more critical of himself, he wouldn’t be making these plays that are so like one in a 10 conversion rate, you know? Like I feel like he makes a lot of weird cross the offensive blue line plays where he just blindly like passes it behind him, you know, like a lot of that kind of stuff. and instead you put that puck in the corner, you know, and you chase it down and the other team if they get the puck, it’s not a turnover right into the neutral zone at least, you know. Um, and it’s just a lot of that kind of stuff. It’s just like weird plays that I think are not very just fundamental hockey plays. And I think if he just like simplified it a little, he’d look a lot better. But then it’s like this is Nikita Cuchov, you know? Yeah. Like who am I to say what he can do? I don’t know. I I I think Cucharov definitely doesn’t look like himself so far this season and I’m with you. I think yeah, if you’re not going to back check, then don’t play because you’re playing in the NHL. You got to play both sides of the game. And we’ve seen I feel like I’ve seen this from a lot of them. Honestly, I don’t even think it’s just Cuch. I think a lot of the Bolts have looked very sluggish when they’re out of the play, you know, and instead of fighting to get back into the play, it’s kind of just like, okay, I think he’s got this, you know, and you’re you’re just leaving your teammate out to dry at that point. And I don’t know, it just I’m wondering about at this point, and I don’t know, maybe this is weird, but it’s almost like the camaraderie in the room maybe is an issue cuz like Yeah. I mean, I there’s there’s nothing to back that up, but no. Here, but here’s the thing. I think Well, let’s just say this. You’re at a job. Just just any job. Yeah. You’re there for 10, 15 years. Yeah. You’ve you’ve already gotten as as much of a raise as you can get. Okay. You you’ve already gotten all the accomplishments you can get, uh all the merits. um you’re you’re around the same co-workers every day. It’s really easy to be complacent. Yeah. And to me, there is a lot of complacency in this lineup. And John Cooper had a quote that I really want to dive into after this break because I think it kind of reflects the same thing. And I think you may be on to something with the drive, the energy just isn’t there right now in the locker room. Uh let’s dive into that when we come back. Today’s episode is brought to you by RouiT. Welcome back to Locked on Lightning. Nick Morgan here along with Greg Steven. And Greg, we are talking about the end of the game for the Lightning last night. The 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. the Nikita Coutro effort on that last Chicago goal under fire and rightfully so from a lot of people this morning. I want to show you a quote that John Cooper said after the game and this was talking about, you know, just kind of the the mindset of the team right now. Um, regardless of if you’ve had guys here and we have a lot of veterans in the lineup, just because you’ve done it before doesn’t mean you’re going to do it again. You have to understand what it took and what it takes to do it again. I don’t know about you, Greg, I read this and I see this as John Cooper saying to his veterans, I’m not seeing the same hockey I’ve seen from you guys all those years that we started making the Stanley Cup. Yeah, I think your the example you gave in our first segment with the job, it’s exactly this quote. It’s just he’s basically saying in my eyes like we’re getting complacent. We don’t have the determination to win right now. And it’s a shame because I think what he’s saying is I know they still have it and they’re just not using it right now. And I agree. I there’s Cucharov is still amazing. It’s not like he’s bad. It’s just I don’t know. I think he’s right. I actually really love that quote. I think that’s perfectly stated to be honest with you. And he said something similar like this before where it’s like we didn’t just get bad at hockey overnight. Like Brandon Hegel didn’t turn into just some other guy. Nikita Coutro didn’t turn into somebody who’s going to, you know, sleepwalk through plays. Yeah. Um, and and look, hockeyy’s a tough job, but I I do think you look at this Lightning roster and it it’s not like everybody’s regressed and it’s not like, you know, all of a sudden they’re just making I I guess like plays that you would see from an aging team every single night or it doesn’t look like they lost a step. It’s all up here. It’s all mental. Yeah. And to me, that that seems to be the biggest hangup for the lighting right now is it’s just it’s all mental. Yeah, and I feel like the further they fall into this little slump, uh, the harder it’s going to be to get out of it. And that’s why I was really hoping the five days off would be a bit of a wakeup call. Kind of like, look what what is the start right now, you know, and we got the Hawks. This is the game. Let’s do it. And I think you had mentioned at the beginning of the show, is it time to like hit the panic button? Mhm. And after watching this game, I am I think I’m just about there. Like out of this like Yeah. I I I want to hold that conversation for when we talk about our weekend double header because I think there there’s there’s an aspect of it that I think is going to play into what happens next. Okay. Um but first I want to talk about the I’ve seen the sentiment kind of going around where well at least last night’s game was a step in the right direction and we heard Ryan Mcdana say like we we’ve done we did a lot of things right in last night’s game. You heard John Cooper say right now we’re not making a lot of mistakes. It’s just the mistakes that we are making are costing us a little bit more. So I kind of want to get your take on this because if we look through the stats last night um only 12 giveaways the Chicago’s 14. That’s a step in the right direction. Uh the Lightning outshot the Blackhawks. 31 shots on goal to 25. Um they did get outshot in the third period, but it wasn’t like by a lot. Like it was 12 to nine, which is that period felt very back and forth. And also I think they had a they had a double minor in that period as well. So yeah, um they were very good on takeaways. They were aggressive at getting the puck away. Uh and for the first time this season, they won the faceoff battle. They won 60% of the faceoff. So, those are all things that we’ve talked about in the past about being the bugaboo for the Lightning. Yeah. And they all got better at this game. Mhm. is still lost. But how much stock do you put into I I I’m I’m not going to use the term moral victory, but I guess how much stock do you put into Okay. Well, at least they’re cleaning up some of the things that we talked about. Not much for me. I If the Hawks were like the Red Wings, sure. Um but it’s the Blackhawks. I I just feel like this should be expected of this team at this point against a team like the Blackhawks. I I just and we knew and I said this going into this game, the Blackhawks are not good on the dot either. So, this is a game where you get that, you know, that momentum in the faceoff back and they did that and I think that is good. I’m not saying it’s not. It’s just it’s not like they played Vegas and they’re gonna soon and we’ll see how good they actually are on the dot. I don’t know. And for me, honestly, if I’m discarding everything we just talked about, all the emotional part of it and and everything, right, and I’m just looking at raw, what is wrong with this team right now? It’s just Emil Lillberg taking four minutes of penalties a game. I’m sorry. Yeah. Like, why are you okay with giving teams a man up every single game and sometimes two? Like, you you’re guaranteed it at this point. I mean, he gets a penalty every single game. There’s no excuse. He’s up to what now? He’s got to be at like 19 minutes, I think, of penalties. That’s insane. Yeah, we’re He’s only playing like seven games. I I just I don’t get that. I I I don’t because I love Lillberg. I think he’s a good hockey player. I love his energy. Love the physical contact. But if you’re going to cost your team like this, I I just don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t be at least healthy scratched for a game or two. I I’m sorry. It just something needs to be done about things like that and they’re just not getting done in my eyes. Yeah. 19 penalty minutes uh season and that that includes one major. So seven minor penalties in seven games. Yes. That’s that is concerning. But that that’s that’s the other thing is at least he’s putting effort out there. Like he’s making a lot of mistakes, but at least he’s putting effort. That’s kind of what you see from like I mean Brandon Hegel’s not really doing much of anything right now. It’s like you know sending how do you send a message to Brandon Hegel? How do you send a message to Nikita Coutroof who just sets up two amazing goals? Yeah. And then has a loweffort play on the back check that leads to Chicago scoring the game-winning goal. Like like it’s like how there’s so much going on here. there’s so much dynamic because like you want to give players a chance to own their mistakes and prove up and obviously like some players in this team have a longer leash than others but right I don’t think you can call and this is no disrespect to you I don’t think you can call a Millberg out for making mistakes where at least he’s going out there and putting effort in but then you know giving some other players a a pass for for saying they’re moving at half speed like what’s like how if you’re John Cooper, how do you manage all of this? And I think that’s that to me is going to be what defines his coaching job this season. Not not whether like job security or anything, but just like the job he does with this team this year. That that’s going to be the million-doll question to me. My only counterpoint to that is at the end of last season, we saw them putting in this effort and they were they were a good team and Lillberg was still doing this. This isn’t a new season issue for him. This is like last year he had 105 as well. So, it’s not like, you know, I’m not trying to blame Lillberg for everything, but also if I’m trying to win games as a as a manager or a coach or an owner, I’m not letting a guy go out there and guarantee a power play per game. That’s just that’s just to me business, you know, like I don’t know. Yeah. But that’s it. I digress. I just wanted to put that out there. Yeah. um one call out uh a positive call out for for this game and then we will talk about whether it’s time to hit the panic button. Okay, we will do that. We will do that after this break. Nick Morgan here alongside Greg Steven. Greg, one positive for me from the game last night, uh, 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, uh, the debut of Dominic James. I was about to say that, too. Yeah, that that’s another call out I want to have. Um, obviously his first, I guess, rotation with the team, uh, after being a Chicago Blackhawks draft pick, I might add, looked really, really good, um, in the prospect camp and throughout training camp. Um, not like a gamechanging score by any means, but just a guy that I think you can put out there and do a couple of things really, really well. Uh, I thought, you know, even though he didn’t play a lot last night, only about 10 minutes per game, I think when he was out there, you could see the impact. You know, he was forchecking hard. Uh, he forced a takeaway. He threw a hit. Um, he, you know, got some good traffic and I thought he was pretty good in the faceoff circle as well. And I think that’s one reason that, uh, John Cooper wanted to bring him off was his was, you know, some help on faceoffs. So, yeah, I I was I was happy with the debut from Dominic James. I think if you’re talking about who’s going to kind of fill in that, you know, 4C spot, he’s looked the best out of the options they’ve had so far for somebody who wants to play that role. Yeah. No, I’m with you. He was noticeable on the ice. Like, you know, I was at the game and I saw him when he was out there. You know, he he was flying, too. He was putting in full effort on every shift just like we’re asking for. So, yeah, I’m with you. I thought he did great and happy for him, too, because I think that was his first game, right? So, yeah. Awesome. Uh, all right. So, let’s talk about this weekend. Uh, tomorrow, Anaheim Ducks, uh, in Tampa, and then a Sunday game against the Vegas Golden Knights, who right now are one of the best teams in the NHL. Um, I haven’t checked the standings this morning, but I think they still might be the best team in the NHL, actually. Uh, nope. Colorado passed them. Okay. Oh, they did. Yeah, last night. Colorado passed them last night. Also tie with the Utah Mammoth. So, Mammoth. So, obviously two two big games. Yeah. Ducks have looked pretty solid. Obviously Vegas is a tough test. And here we go. We’re we’re one four and two heading into this back toback. Greg, I mean, if I is this weekend the indicator for whether or not we’re coming on Monday’s show in punching the panic button? Yeah, I think so. I think so, too. And like I don’t expect to win against Vegas by any means, but I think you got to beat the Ducks now. You haven’t even won a home game yet. No. And Anaheim has won their last two and put seven up on the Bruins last night. Yeah, I saw that. 75, right? Yeah. So, to me, I I’m not going into any of these games with any amount of I guess enthusiasm is the right word, right? Yeah. I’m I’m kind of going into it as this might get ugly. And that’s that’s to me, Greg, if the Lightning drop one more of these, I think if they come out of this weekend, even like one and two, I’m hitting the panic button. And it also depends on how they look as well because if they if if we come in here Monday and we talk about the turnovers and we talk about effort level and we talk about faceoffs and we talk about dump penalties, I it’s it’s a sign. It’s I’m I’m on the verge of a ranked here, but and I’m trying not to be, but but I think to me that is a sign of big danger in the locker room because that tells me the message isn’t getting across. Yeah. And then the question becomes, what do you do if John Cooper is not pulling energy level out of this group this year and they’re making the same mistakes and he’s saying all the right things and doing all the right things, but nothing’s working. I can I bring up Let me give you a topic that’s related to this um that maybe we can talk about on Monday. Okay, if and we’ll re-evaluate, but someone left a comment on a on one of our videos. Um, and I thought it was very intriguing. I hadn’t thought of it. They said that Hedman is a great voice alongside a main captain’s voice. And part of me is wondering if we’ve really seriously overlooked the value of Steven Steven Stamos’s captainship. And oh yeah, and I feel like I definitely did because that matters a lot more than people realize in hockey especially. Um and I’m wondering if maybe Hedman isn’t the right head voice, you know. Um not that I think he’s a bad leader by any means. I think he is that guy. I just I just thought about that. I thought that comment was very interesting and I I wanted to mention it because maybe that is also an issue. I don’t think it all falls on Coupe, you know, and I do think some does, like you said, he’s got to be able to draw it out of them as well. Um, but I can’t I don’t think it’s all him there, you know. I think the players also need to find it within their group. Um, but I digress. I think that’s just an interesting subject to talk about later um, based on what happens this weekend really. Um, the other thing I wanted to bring up before I rant is we have two goalies who are over a three goals against average and our backup has a much better save percentage right now and it’s not even wonderful. Vassie has zero wins. Um, and to be fair, I don’t think 99% of these goals are on him at all. Um, but I do think there was a save. I think it was their second goal was very it was like twoon-one turn into two and two and then just kind of a wrist shot from the point. Yeah. And I think three years ago he saves that. And when I saw that one too, I was very concerned because I’m thinking I feel like he makes this save most of the time. And and look, I’m not blaming him. I’m not because that shouldn’t happen at all that whole play, right? But yeah, still it was a very clear open shot. No, no one in the lane. And I don’t know. I just thought like prime Vassie would make that, you know. Yeah. I I’m I’m not touching Andre Vasilovski after last night because I also thought he made some really good saves to keep them in the game. And I thought the first two goal or the the first goal and the last goal he was quite frankly hung out to dry. I completely I’m not blaming him in any capacity. I don’t want you to think that. I’m just saying that one goal was like to me I was like oh but we all I mean it happens. It’s not like just something I’m keeping an eye on I guess if you will. Yeah. Okay. I got that. We’ll have to see what happens this weekend. Um yeah, it’s going to be interesting to see how they do the goalenders. Jojo’s definitely going to get a start. I would assume maybe tomorrow against Anaheim. I think so. I would say Johansson tomorrow, Anaheim. Um, and then Bassie against the Golden Knights. Stay with us, folks, because Monday, whether whether Monday we’re coming off a win or or or a loss, you’re gonna want to tune in for the Monday show because I have a feeling we’re going to have a lot to break down. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That’s going to do it for us on today’s Locked on Lightning. Thanks for making us your first listen of the day again. Back with new episodes next week, starting with Monday’s recap of the Ducks and Knights game. We’ll see you then.

We def will beat the Ducks! ⚡⚡
Well, you guys didn't get your 6-1 or 7-1 win against the Hawks, did you? Are you going to disrespect the Ducks like you did the Hawks and suggest a 6-1 or 7-1 win against them as well? Just like the Hawks, the Ducks are great this year on the road. Make note of this.
We are getting to a breaking point here. Cooper is going to need to do something bigger than just ending the Lilleberg experiment (please, for the love of God) to regain control of this team. I don't care that Kucherov had two great plays for our two goals, he also had the game deciding turnover, dogged it on the backcheck, and had a front row seat to his man scoring the game winner. Sit him down. There needs to be a public display of accountability immediately. This season is slipping away from us and it's going to result in some big changes to this organization if we don't stop the bleeding.
We will see what kind of locker room leader Heddy is thru all of this as the Captain. He has got to get them going from a player perspective.
What does Point do on the court? What is Gonçalves doing on the court? Kucherov is a maximalist! He wants victory now! No extra time. And it was he who brought the team back into the game, both at 0:1 and at 1:2. What do the others want?
Headman – captain or who?
Guys, you're the best! I always enjoy watching your episodes with analysis of the team's situation!
Positives:
1. 3rd period penalty kill
2. Faceoff improvement
Team is heading for a crossroads in about a month if things don't change, and honestly it's a good thing. Moving one of Vasy or Kuch spells a new chapter.
