Chicago Blackhawks vs Tampa Bay Lightning Game 8 NHL Hockey Live Game Cast & Audio
and losses in this league and that’s the reality of it. Um, you know, I I would say it hasn’t been a whole lot different. If you take take out the Florida game, um, it hasn’t been a whole lot different than the start. You know, I thought Florida was definitely the better team in in that game against us. I thought we played hard, but they were the better team. Other than that, I think every game’s been pretty close. And, uh, the last four games, we’ve found a way to either get a point or win, which is great. That’s part of what this league is and part of what we’re trying to do with our young guys is learning how to win. First, be in those close games and then learn how to win them. So, um, you know, it’ll be another challenge here tonight, but, uh, uh, I like the progress from a process standpoint our guys are making. You know, one of the things I picked up on in the last five games is that this team has only allowed two first period goals. Now, to me, that’s enormous because you keep an opponent in check, and at at some point during the the play, you impose your will and take control. Yeah. No, it’s a it’s a you don’t want to chase the game on a consistent basis to your point. And I think if you’re chasing the game, uh, that’s when sometimes you get a little bit loose defensively, too. And now games can can kind of go the wrong way. Now, there’s going to be moments in games where just the situation is where, you know, the other team does score first or they do score in the first. And, uh, we’re going to have to react to that. You know, we’ve tried we’ve talked a lot about reacting to the uh, the momentum highs and lows and being able to handle all those. And, uh, it’ll be important here in this building to handle that momentum for sure. Well, the 117 configuration has certainly worked for this team here in the last four. And I I guess the the obvious question is will you stick with that here tonight? And what do you see when you see 11 forwards and seven defenseman? Obviously there’s an ice time distribution, but you you as the head coach, what do you see from the bench? Yeah, it fits our team well um so far this year. It fits our team well for two reasons. one, I think it gives our chance to have a couple uh another dynamic offensive line because if you, you know, have a guy uh let’s say Ryan Green on a line who’s got a good offensive ability and you throw Connor Bard down there with a shoe on a shift with them or you throw Frank Nazer on a shift with him or Tyler Batusi, that line becomes a threat, you know, a real threat and so I think that’s helped us from an offensive standpoint, but probably most importantly from the defensive standpoint got a lot of number of young D. um with Young D probably comes a little bit of a up and down in their game. There’s a little bit of a uh can be a roller coaster and so you know we have 7D. It kind of uh evens out the ice time a little bit. If one guy’s going, he can play more. If one guy’s not going, he doesn’t quite play as much. But it also from a a penalty kill power play standpoint, I think gives us our best guys out there in those spots. I think uh Renzel and Leonov are are going to be good power players. And I think uh Connor Murphy and and Louis Kreb are probably our best penalty kill defenseman on that right side. So, it evens that out, which I think is important. And and uh so for this team, it seemed to fit so far. All right. Well, Jeeoff, only seven games have been played this so far this season. You’re 32 and two, and I’ve said this before, this team could easily be undefeated because they’ve been in every single game, a break here and there. You’re 7-0, but do you see a team identity developing with this group? I do in a sense that um you know, I think part of what our identity is going to be is we’re going to be a fast team. And I think I I’ve seen that. And fast isn’t just uh you know how fast you skate. It’s fast with the puck. It’s it’s playing from one end to the other end in a in a in a quick way. Um fast is how hard you track back and you utilizing your speed as a defensive weapon. Um you know, and I I think the biggest thing that I’m trying to build here is even more than identity is a is a is a process standpoint that we’re going to learn to to check for our offense. And ultimately, uh, in order, you know, as a young player, especially offensively, you got to learn to produce while still being a real good defensive player because if you’re not, you’re not going to win in the end. And and so that’s been a big part of what we’re trying to do and I think we’re doing a pretty good job of it. All right, Jeeoff, I’m going to close with this. You’re facing the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first two games this season, and this is kind of a return home, so to speak, for yourself. You had three years down here as the assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, learning with a man named John Cooper who is one of the most respected head coaches in the National Hockey League all time. By osmosis, you had to learn something from that man. So, what do you use from those years here that you can employ in this game here tonight and really for the rest of the season? First off, uh just, you know, coming back here is is is coming back to see great friends and uh you know that I think their staff is is great. not just Coupe, but uh Rob Zetler, Jeff Halper, and the whole staff is really, really good, really smart people. I learned a ton uh through our interactions and and you know, Coupe and I have known each other for 25 years. Uh we’ve talked hockey, but never been in the trenches together. So, to be in the trenches with him was great. I think he does an excellent job leading his team. He knows he’s always got a good feel for the group. Uh he knows how to how to hold them accountable, but be in the fight with them, which I think is something that when I’ve been at my best, I’ve done. And it was a good reminder of how important that is. So, um, but you also learned from some great players down here. It was really, uh, you know, we didn’t win as much as we wanted to in the playoffs, but it was an unbelievable three years of my life, uh, that I that I really cherish and I think is did a good, uh, did did good in terms of kind of a reset for me and preparing me for this job. All right, Jeeoff, thanks for this and good luck tonight against Tampa Bay. All right, thank you. That’s Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blash. We’ll be back with more right after you hear these messages. Hawks and Lightning getting ready to come your way. 5:45 local or local puck drop at least here in Chicago. It’s an interesting start time. Hey, at each home game at the UC this season, we will be saluting a veteran sponsored by Jeffbiserhouse.com, a proud veteranowned business serving Chicagoland since 2007. Let’s head over to Benchmark International Arena, which I am still getting used to. It is no longer called Amily Arena. And bring in for the first time this season, Tony Granado pinch hitting for Troy Murray. Tony, what is going on? Charlie, how are you? I’m kind of liking this start time. Yeah. Yeah, we’re all going to get home at a reasonable time. That’s what I’m thinking about. Yeah, it won’t upset our uh sleep schedules, which is always a great thing. How you doing, Tony? It beats uh sitting around all day waiting for the game. Those 8:00 games that you got to wait for when they’re a national game. Today’s a national game and they’re started early. these. We have to be very thankful for uh ESPN on doing this game early for us. We got a long trip next uh I think starting next week. Hawks go on a six gamer. A lot of 9:00 starts, but that trip ends with a noon start. So So I think uh we’ll recover on that Sunday, but that’s going to be a long one. Yeah. And you know, you know, the bottom line is it doesn’t matter what time the puck drops is as long as the team plays well and finds a way to get two points out of it, you could start the game at any time, right, Charlie? 100%. And speaking of the team playing well, Hawks are 30 and1 in their last four games, Tony, after an 02-1 start. And even in those first three games, Florida needed all 60 minutes. Boston overtime easily could have gone Chicago’s way. The home opener against Montreal, the Hawks were 15 seconds away from pushing that to overtime. So, the Hawks have been through seven games this season. Tony, it feels like there’s a lot of positives uh through, you know, through seven games. What have you seen from Chicago? Well, it’s just been fun. Uh I think from you know the first period when they kind of looked a little bit aruck in Florida the banner gets raised and you’re playing against the Stanley Cup champs and you got a lot of guys that hadn’t been in that building or that environment just kind of standing around a little bit to start the game but then you remember that Nick Felino fight late in the first period and then probably a discussion at the end of the first period saying hey guys you know what let’s just start playing and since that period you know every period they’ve been engaged involved physically they’ve They’ve kind of been the initiators. Boston tried to bully him uh the next night in Boston or the next game in Boston and then Chicago responded. It’s when you saw Connor yapping and and doing all his antics to to let the other team know, hey, you can come as hard as you want at us. We ain’t going anywhere. And and that’s been a really significant uh thing that I think not just we notice as watching, but I think the other teams are paying attention to that on how hard they bite back when you try to, you know, initiate stuff. And that’s something that I think is kind of organically coming together. And it has a lot to do with Murphy. It has a lot to do with Felino and Dickinson and the older players, but the younger guys understand now, hey, we’re here now. This is kind of taken our team as far as us taking over some of the competitiveness and and that uh that physicality and that willingness to show that, hey, we’re going to pay prices to win or try to win or put everything we can on the ice. And that’s been, I think, really noticeable. What have you thought of Jeff Blaso? I know that you worked on his staff in Detroit. We were talking throughout training camp. It feels like the guys are starting to pick up the system and it was going to it training camp was a little bit of a a struggle as guys acclimated to that, but I feel like the Hawks record so far, especially lately, 30 and one is indicative of how bought into they are to Blill. So, what have you what have you felt of the Jeff Blasell effect? Yeah, I honestly don’t think there was a transition. I think when he was hired uh in the middle of the summer there or start of the summer, uh his coaching began then. So, it didn’t start at training camp. The players didn’t have to learn when the coach walked into the locker room or stepped on the ice with his whistle for the first time. There were no surprises. He made it a point to get to know the players, to get the players had an opportunity to get to know Blash and what was expected of him. So, he laid the ground rules down well before camp started. And the older guys love it because they they you know they got a coach that’s coming in here with a game plan that uh you know gives everybody some certain level of accountability, some certain responsibilities, uh some certain uh ownership in kind of what’s going to happen moving forward. And you know I think it’s I don’t know if it’s a buying. I just think it’s a respect factor that what Jeff has brought into the organization is something that uh the players feel like gosh we can win now. This coach believes in us and he’s not going to say, “Hey, we’re going to do this in 2 or 3 years.” We’re going to start right now. We’re going to start building the foundation for winning right now. I’m going to teach you what winning habits are. We’re going to we’re going to be hard on you and push you in different directions to try to help you recognize what that is and what it’s going to take. And so, uh, you know, there were some, you know, learning process, I guess, on some on certain things, but I think, you know, he is one of the best communicators that I’ve been around and worked with, and I think players are understanding that. Got about a minute left here. Tony, what do you think uh what do you think Jeff is feeling tonight as he goes up against Cooper who he kind of has been his mentor the last three years in Tampa? I can just go by experience when you go back to one of your old teams or or you coach against one of your buddies. Uh you’re fired up in a different way. It’s it’s not about I got to beat him. It’s it’s about I I appreciative of the opportunity that he gave me. Uh I want my guys to, you know, play a good game so it can show him that the the situation I walked into is a good one. Uh so uh I I think he’s excited. I think he’s confident in his team. The the Tampa Bay tonight, just so we know this, they are ornery and they are under uh achieving so far in this year. They’ve been sloppy in their first six games. So you got to expect them to be really really good tonight. And I think those are the challenges that Jeff wants his team to be ready for and that they’re going to have to face as they move forward. All right, good stuff Tony. Have a great call with John. We’ll do. Thanks, Charlie. All right, that’s going to do it for the FanDuel Sportsbook Chicago Blackhawks pregame show. John Weidman and Tony Granado have the call. It’s time for Chicago Blackhawks hockey with the call of the game. Here’s John Whitman and Tony Granado. The Chicago Blackhawks ride a four-game point streak into Tampa Bay tonight and take the ice in the Sunshine State for the first of two meetings with the Lightning. Now, extending that streak to five games is going to require hanging a loss on a goalender they’ve never beaten except in game four of the 2015 Stanley Cup finals. Hi again everyone, John Whiteman along with Tony Granado. We are here at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida, where this evening the Blackhawks will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first of two games, Tony. And uh I’m looking forward to this. I’m looking forward to working with you obviously. And I think this will be, as you were talking about with Charlie, I think this will be a genuine test for the Blackhawks. Tampa Bay seems like they’re going to come to play tonight. It does. And we watched practice yesterday and John Cooper, one of the calmst coaches that I know in professional sports, was barking at his team throughout the practice, as were the assistant coaches. They’ve just been sloppy. They just haven’t gotten to their game yet. And yesterday was one of those message days that, hey, we’re playing a young hungry team in the Blackhawks and we better be ready. All right, who’s going to deliver? Sponsored by Mitsubishi Electric Heating and Air Conditioning, electric heat pumps for a better environment inside and out. Visit get a comfy home.com. I’m going with Tyler Bertusi. Tyler has scored four career goals against Andre Basillesi. Keys for tonight’s game are sponsored by your Chicago and Northwest Indiana Hyundai dealers. and Tony’s got your keys. I think the start of the game is really important. And one thing that you mentioned to me before this broadcast is the Blackhawks have only allowed two goals in the first period in the last five games and they’re both in that St. Louis game. When you get off to a good start, your goalender can settle into it and certainly the Blackhawks have settled in the game. So that’s really important. And I think be aware when Cooer Rob is on the ice. So 96 in blue tonight. When he’s on the ice, make him play 200 ft. Make him play Dzone coverage. No turnovers. Don’t give him any easy chances. I like it. And Tony, quickly, who are you banking on this evening? Sponsored by Marquette Bank. Love where you bank. Celebrating 80 years of neighborhood banking. Who do you like? Well, I’ve banked on Spencer Knight all season so far and the Blackhawks have and I will do it again tonight. All right, without further ado, we send it down to ice level and pick up our anthem singer, Blackhawks and Lightning coming up. But first, our Star Spangled Banner. Hawks fans, please enjoy our national anthem. Next year, he’ll officially retire after 20 years of dedicated service. Please welcome and salute Sergeant First Class Antonio Castro. And now, let’s sing loud and proud with the voice of Boltz Nation, retired US Air Force Technical Sergeant Sonia Bryson Curtsy as she performs our national anthem. Oh, say can you see by the dawn early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight last gleaming, who’s brought stripes and bright stars through the peril satisfied. All the red hearts we were so gallently streaming and the rockets red glare. The bombs bursting in our gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star spangled B way. For the land of the free and the home of the brave, one of the great voices in the National Hockey League, Miss Sonia Bryson with our Star Spangle Banner. Outstanding work. Here are tonight’s starting lineups. In goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning, it’s going to be Andre Vasilelesi in his career against the Blackhawks regular season. 130 and 0 with one shut out. And at defense for the Lightning are Victor Hedman and JJ Moer. Up front from left to right, Jake Gensel starts at left wing. Centering the Lightning opening line is Braden Point. And starting at the right wing is Nikita Cucherov. For the Blackhawks, it’s Spencer Knight in goal. 31 and0 in his career against the Tampa Bay Lightning. At defense are Conor Murphy and Matt Grizzlick. Up front from left to right, Landon Slagert starting at left wing. Centering the Hawks opening line. Welcome back the captain Nick Felino. Starting at the right wing is Colton Doc. Our referees this evening are TJ Luxmore and Stephan Hill and the linesman are CJ Murray and Johnny Murray. Not sure if they’re related, but I guess we’ll get our we’ll get our private detectives on that one, Tony, and find out before the end of the cast. Underway here in Tampa and the Hawks control and Grizzlick right away from center ice, tosses the puck down the boards deep into the Tampa zone. Edmond quickly clears it around up the near side. Zagard had the puck briefly and then turned it over to Moer who clears the center ice. Conor Murphy firing it back down into the Tampa zone. Caught by Colton Dock along the left sideboard. He sent it around behind the net up the far side. take is taken away though by Gensel. Get it ahead to center ice. Headman over the hawk line on the left wing. Send it toward the net and it deflects in on goal and Spencer Knight plops on the puck and holds on. We get a whistle stopping play early on. 31 seconds gone in the hockey game and no score. Line changes for both teams and a face off on the hockey end. Yeah, nothing real serious on there, but what you saw was Victor Hedmond jumping in the play to get four man in the rush for Tampa. So Blackhawks will have to be aware of him joining the play tonight. It’s one thing that when you watch the first six games of Tampa, it looked like it was missing. It looked like the D weren’t getting involved in the offense, and I’m sure that’s something that they’ll focus on tonight. Yeah, Tony, I think he was going for his 800th career point. That next point is his 800th. And boy, he’s had a great career against the Blackhawks. We’ll share the numbers here if we get a chance. From the draw, Ryan Mcdana to the puck, left point, moves it across on the right point. Eric Turnack will spin it in behind the Hawk Net. It’s taken there and spun around again to Mcdana. He’ll fire from the left point. That goes wide in behind the net. Cooerov feeds the puck up the slot. Taken away now by Mcdana at the left point. Angles it off the end boards and Anthony Cerelli had the puck for a moment. Lost it. Brandon Hegel now to the puck at the left point. Hawk in a former Hawk will carry through the high slot over to the right wing side from the circle. Tried to center the puck that was into the skates of Connor Badard. Hegel got it back to the high slot. McDonald long wrist shot in and out of the glove of Spencer Knight. And now Lucas Reichel to the puck will clear it out to center ice forcing the Lightning to regroup and the Hawks will get a line change. Yeah, it’s the one thing the Blackhawks lost that face off in their own zone and led to some offensive zone time for Tampa Bay. Hawks may get caught here. Yanni Gourd taking a pass and racing into the Hawk zone down the right wing. Leaves it behind the net. Oliver Bjorkstrand put it out to the line where Victor Heman wales a shot that deflects wide. And now in behind the Hawknet, Wyatt Kaiser chasing the puck down. Will angle a pass up the right side. A two-on-one develops led by Ilia McKay over the lightning line. He fires from the left circle and a blocker save made by Blas Vaselleski. Then the puck is deflected up and out of play. We get a whistle. No score early on in the game. A great pace to this game, Tony. Feels like a playoff game, right? And when Ma’s on the ice, look for his speed. And he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone. Jumped on a quick two-on-one. He had Nazar going to the net on the far side. The D did a nice job of taking away the pass. and McKay have decided to shoot and kick save by Vasilleski for the first scoring chance of the game tonight. All Blackhawks wins this season are sponsored by Circus Sports Illinois. Download your new bookie today at circasports.com. Face off circle of left. It’s going to be Frank Nazar facing off for the Hawks against Yanni Gourd. He’s a native of a town just south of Quebec City. I had a nice chat with Yanni this morning and this is his second stint with the Lightning. He ended up being traded away, ended up with Seattle for a couple of years, but he was happy to come back last spring. Well, he got his two cups here. Absolutely. Pretty probably bring back lots of good memories and fans, I’m sure, are happy to have him back. I we called his first game as I recall. He was called up from the miners. I’m not sure. I think it was Norfolk where they were at the time. Here’s Grizzlick firing from the high slot. That deflects in on goal off the stick of Frank Nazar. Nazar with a puck top of the left circle. Sends it over. Archiminoff right point. He’ll sweep it down in behind the lightning net. Edmond took it away there from Tabo Terravine and clears to the line. Lechoff held it in at the point and flips the puck back down to the far corner. Edmond leaving the puck there. JJ Moer, a Swissborn defenseman, will move it out the center ice. Here’s Gourd crossing the Hawk line on the left wing. He angles the pass back to the high slot where Brandon Hegel fires and that deflects off the glass and up into the protective netting and out of play. So a whistle stops play. They’ll keep the face off in the Hawk zone to Spencer. Knight’s left. Pretty innocent shot from Hegel just inside the blue line. Took a wrister that went wide and deflected off of the backboards and up into the netting. But at the other end, Grizzlick had the po uh point puck and at the top of the circle and had a wrist shot that was deflected by Frankie Naser. That was a pretty good scoring chance at the other end. So, Blackhawks are off to a good start. I like what I’ve seen of Grizzlick so far, Tony. We’ll get your comments in here just a second, but I like what I’ve seen of him so far. He seems to have that that depth of experience and know what to do at the right time. I mean, all those years with the Bruins, right? Absolutely. Great points. Now, at the Hawk blue line, Wyatt Kaiser takes the puck away. He is knocked into the Hawk zone off the puck. Mitchell Cha Chaffy down the right side. Hawk zone firing a shot and a pad save made by Spencer Knight. Connor Badard to the puck along the left boards will clear ahead to center ice. Ryan Green on the puck in front of the penalty boxes bumping with Chaffy but stabs the puck down in behind the lightning net and back to get it is Amos Lillberg. Head to Mitchell Chaffy left wing lightning line. He’ll hand it off to Darren Radish across the Hawk line. The one-time Rockford Icehog down to the right wing corner fires a shot over the net. Rise around to the left point. Lillberg will flip it back in behind the Hawk net up the near side where Connor Bernard collects at the Hawk line. He shot a pass rank wide for Landon Slagger. He’ll now slap the puck down the right side boards deep into the Lightning zone. Behind the net, Eric Turnack moves it out and he got it to Gage Gonalves who’ll send it over to Mcdana. Then a pass ahead deflects down deep into the Hawk zone. We get an icing call here against Tampa Bay. So no score with 1640 left in period number one. Should mention, by the way, that uh there are a ton of Blackhawk fans in this building as there usually are, Tony. It’s just great to see. You go on the road, you see Hawks fans. They’re all over the place. Yes, they are. They are worldwide. Well, faceoff circle to the left of Vasileles. It’s going to be Nazar winning the draw now. Mave the left right point. Put it to the left point. Blic firing a wrist shot. Turned out of there with a pad save made by Vasileleski. This puck in the left wing corner. Churnick banks it free behind the net. Ryan Mcdana with a lead pass ahead to Gonzalez at center ice. Hands it off. Jake Gensel wheeling over the hawk line down the left wing from near the corner. He’ll fire. Bad save made by Knight. Sam Nazar he got in the grill of Jake Gensel and the even her upper on the way. Here’s why. Tampa Bay number 59. Minor penalty holding. Yeah, it it’s one of those plays there where Gensel was a little frustrated and just grabbed on to Nazar, tried to hold him up kind of away from the play, just interfered with him a little bit and it was actually McKay that he interfered with. And you mentioned McKay starting the PK. He leads the NHL in penalty killing forwards ice time so far this year. and has he been an effective penalty killer? It’s maybe one of the best penalty killers that I’ve seen in a long, long time in the league. And he continues to get better. The confidence he has when he goes over the board when they’re short-handed is something that you can see from up here in the press box. So, the young hockey players out there that may be listening, I’ll just tell you that if you’re a tenacious hockey player, that’s going to account for something. Some coach is going to notice that and they’re going to employ your skills. And that’s what Ilia McKay is. If nothing else, he is a tenacious hockey player. Here’s Hedman at the hot line. Send it across the rink. They get a whistle on an offside called and let’s see what we got here. Too many men and the Hawks. Yeah, Hawks. We’re going to have a power play. We’re going to get the even upper here now. Chicago bench minor penalty. Too many men on the ice. That was one of those times as Connor Bernard was changing. Linesman was right on top of it and made the call. One of the Murray brothers or he said one of the two linesmans that are named Murray tonight. One of the Murray boys. So, the Lightning will come out of this with a power play. And they actually have a power play right now. And now the puck turned over. McKaya batted it away down ice into the Lightning zone. He’s got it down the left wing and fires and that deflects up into the protective Denning. But Victor Hedman, Tony, he looked like he got a little bit lazy with a pass. And there was McKay laying his stick blade in the passing lane to knock it away. It’s like Mave on the PK has a stick that goes from board to board and from goal line to the top of the blue line. like his reach and his anticipation. Uh, and this is a four-on-ree situation. You got Cooerov and and Heedman, two of the smartest power play guys in the world out there. Four on three. And he’s able to break the play up by himself and get the puck all the way down the ice. Louie Krebier back to collect it with a backhand flip. He’ll send it past everybody and down. Well done, Louie. Well done. And it’s hard when you gain the back of the net. Put the puck into a hawk line on the right wing to Gensel. the point in the corner. Hands the puck off Coocher off the hot blue line. Tried to de puck through the feet of Conor Murphy who turned his skate sideways. Knocked the puck free to Ryan Green. I couldn’t imagine being a defenseman with Cooerov coming down a million miles an hour, stick handling all over the place. Somehow Murf was able to get a skate on it and break the play up. That’d be my worst nightmare, Tony. I wouldn’t get any sleep the night before. Here’s Sher Elli at the hot glue line. Coughed up the puck. It’s batted to center ice now quickly by Nazar, but this play is whistled down on the off side anyway. So 104 remains in period number one. The Hawks won the Lightning no score. Tampa Bay 0 for two on their power play. And the difference in the game is the Hawks are one for two on theirs. And that strike was off a faceoff win. A quick little movement on the power play. He’s met back there by Kaiser. They continue to battle. Excuse me. This is Swagger as time winds off the clock and the Blackhawks are going to take a one- nothing lead into the dressing rooms after 20 minutes here in Tampa Bay. It’s a great start for the Hawks. It was one of the keys to the game we thought would be important. They’ve they’ve had great starts the last five games. Only given up two goals in the first period. Let’s make it six. Well done. I They just did. I mean, it was was impressive what they did. They didn’t get rattled. I mean, the Lightning start, as you as you’ll recall, was pretty fast. I I felt like the Lightning came to this game with a purpose and you were talking about that a little earlier, but it just it just seemed like they were in like a playoff type of a mentality starting this game and the pace was that good, but the Blackhawks held him out and Spencer Knight was sensational. He made two big saves, especially that save on Cutra off. But but again, when your goalender’s confident, your team’s confident in front of him, he knows what he’s going to face and that’s the one thing that I think has been consistent all year so far this year. Spencer has confidence in the D boxing out so he can get to the top of the crease and then also recovering the rebound. So, he’s nice and calm in there and he’s pushing post to post really nice. He’s seeing everything and and when you get a goalender that gets in a groove like Spencer Knight has been to start this season, it makes it a heck of a lot easier to defend. All right, I’m going to I’m going to tap your knowledge as a former head coach in the National Hockey League. You got a one- nothing lead on the road against a team like Tampa. What are you saying to your guys in the dressing room in between periods one and two? Well, you’re patting them on the pad saying, “Hey guys, great start, but lots of hockey to be played. A couple things that we need to do better is spend some more time in the offensive zone. We can grind them down. Let’s make their skilled players get frustrated and cheat the game a little bit and we’ll get offense off of that.” Lots of times, you know, point and Cut and Heedman are expected to score every game. And when you’re trailing and when your team’s not doing well, that puts lots of pressure on them to think they have to score every shift. And because of that mentality, you can catch them defensively making mistakes or cheating the game a little bit and take advantage of it offensively. And that’s what the Blackhawks should be looking to do in the second period as this game progresses. It sounds like great advice to me. Well, we’re going to send it away to a break and Tony’s going to stick around. He and Charlie have a little bit of a dialogue during our intermission. Charlie’s going to have a full intermission report as he usually does and then we’ll be back down here to Tampa Bay for second period action. It’s going the Hawks way so far after one period. They lead one- nothing. This is Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. Whether you’re on the field or on the ice, the best way to bet is with the world’s largest sports book at your fingertips. And let’s head over to Benchmark International Arena where we bring in Tony Granado. Tony, wasn’t necessarily a pretty first period by the Blackhawks, but encouraging that they found the the first goal of the game because Tampa, they’re fighting it early on here as far as their their season. Charlie, I’m gonna say it was really pretty. Really pretty. All right. Road grindy period. You know what? They played smart enough. They allowed Spencer Knight to make a couple big saves like he had to. They waited for their power play opportunity and they executed. They won the faceoff. But by the time I figured out that it was a power play, it was in the back of the net. I’m looking at power play numbers to see what the Tampa’s PK was and how the Blackhawks have been lately. And I look up and there’s bang bang down to the goal line right to the pocket in the slot. A beautiful shot by Nazar. But I I I’m just I’m impressed on the Blackhawks understanding they’re going into a a building tonight on a team that is so desperate to win and knowing that they’re going to come out and they’re going to play this like a playoff game and they were ready for it. They made some smart plays early enough in the game to kind of slow the pace of the game down in Tampa speed that they were coming out with and nullified it. And then they they draw their penalty on a on Slagger just flying down the wing, get gets the defender to reach out and pull him down uh to to get the first power play of the game and then you execute on it. So it it’s a really good road period. Uh but you know what they got to expect Tampa to come out in the second period and really try to, you know, initiate uh physically on the forche, try to get their D involved a little bit more and try to push the pace of the game up. So I know Blash will have them ready. Tony, I feel like I’m running out of things to say about Frank Nazar and how impressive he’s been early on. I mean, you mentioned it. Scores the goal, has three shot attempts in the first period, two shots on goal, won four of six faceoffs, he had a block shot. I mean, how impressed have you been, and how important has his emergence helped take some of the spotlight away from Connor Bard where it’s now if you want to face the Blackhawks, you don’t just have to shut down 98, you have to worry about 91 now. You know what it and and you’re right, we should praise Frank every period and all these little things that he’s doing, but if you go right down the roster and you go McKay and you go Renzel and you go Donado and you go Felino and you go Doc and you go Kaiser and you you just keep going and all of these guys are understanding the little things that it’s going to take to get this team over the hump and to be competitive consistently and build that identity. and they’ve done that for the first part of the season. And Frankie certainly been a leader of that in different ways. Uh you know, he’s already drawn six penalties that start this season. That’s a lot in in seventh game. I mean, you think about that. It means he’s basically given the team a power play each and every game by by using his speed, by getting underneath the opponent’s skin, by being, you know, tenacious on the for check. Uh so there’s lots of little things uh from pretty much like I said everybody on the roster uh that gets everybody that’s watched the start of this season really excited. Lucas Reichel he’s on the top line with Conor Bard tonight filling in for Andre Burkovski. This is an important game for him to to take advantage of that opportunity. He performed really well in St. Louis last week. Had a three-point night. um quietish first period for for him, but I think that this is a a reward for the coaching staff given how well he’s played early on so far. A reward and he’s earned it and and you know, he sat through training camp kind of pins and needles wondering if he was going to get traded or if he was going to still be part of the plan with the Blackhawks. He earned enough uh I guess coins in the right pocket on what he did to to be in the positive side with Jeff Flashill and management to say, “Hey, we’re going to keep him on the roster opening night and just see where it goes.” doesn’t start the season in the lineup, more in the stands. He’s got to work hard and have a positive attitude uh as a team gets the season underway. He did that in that St. Louis game. You’re right. Two goals and assist. Were they beautiful goals? Well, one was a a goal that I’m telling you doesn’t happen very often. Just threw a puck to the net from basically the corner, went in for him. But that second goal, he was in on the floor check. He finished his check. He beat his guy to the net and the puck comes to him. when you when you outwork players and you understand that that grit and the tenacity is what earned you goals and ice time. Um, and that’s what he did in that game. And because of that, like you just said, he’s playing with Connor Bard. He’s getting shifts with Conor Bard anyways. And and uh, you know, I liked it in the first period. He didn’t have a whole lot to do because he didn’t get a ton of ice time, but he he was smart on how he played and and his speed is noticeable. and and and Jeff Blash this morning we were talking about, you know, kind of creating that identity and he says, you know, we want to be fast. It doesn’t mean we just skate fast. It means we we get back on defense fast. It means we get on the forche fast. It means, you know, we’re into the battles fast. And that’s what he’s talking about when he says speed and fast. But but there certainly is some element of speed that the players have with Slagger with with uh Nazar with Connor the way Connor Bernard’s skating this year. I mean, they’re mo Tyler Batuzi. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him skate as I fast as I have these first, you know, seven games of the season. He’s just got a uh I I don’t know if it’s the the influence of the young guys that are are are making him move his feet a little bit more or the training he did in the summer. He looks faster and I think it’s been a really a big part of the the start for the Blackhawks this season. Awesome. Good stuff, Tony. We’ll do it again in the second intermission. Thank you, Charlie. All right, we got more Blackhawks hockey coming up in Tampa Bay after this on 720 WGN. Order free samples at timbertch.com as we head back over to Benchmark International Arena with John and Tony. Boys, what are you going to be looking here for the second period? Well, first things first, Charlie. Tony and I are looking down at the Blackhawks bench to see if Sam Renzel and Tyler Bertusi have returned. Tony, are your eyes better than mine. I I am not able to pick out whether Renzel and Bertusi are there. All the boys have their backs turned away, so it’s kind of hard to pick up the numbers. I just saw Renzel on the TV monitor here, so I think he’s out there. He did leave with a lot of gushing blood around his eye, so he’s probably got stitched up. Okay, good. Good. And Bratusi just returned to the venue, too. So, we got a full squad in period two. By the way, the Blackhawks killed off two penalties in that uh first period and that meant that they got back to full strength. Sponsored by Northwestern Medicine Orthopedics on a relentless pursuit of better medicine. Underway here in the second period. Victor Hedman turns the puck over between the circles. Lightning zone. Colton Dock the left circle. Nick Felino does a spin. Tried to get a backhander away. Could not. Puck taken away by Moer. Shot it across to Gonalves. right wing at center ice and he flipped it ahead but the Hawks end up taking the puck back. Here’s Murphy inside the Hawk zone. Top of the near circle, flips the puck over to Wy Kaiser. He’ll advance it up the left wing. Taken away by the Lightning and Gensel knocks it into the Hawk zone. Point gives Chase behind the net, but Murphy beat him to it. Sticks it around at the right wing side and Landon Slagert there bumps into Nick Felino at the lightning blue line as Felino snaps the puck down behind the Lightning. The Hawks will go for a quick line change. Gonalves tried to get to a pass at the Hawk line on the left wing, but it sails by him. And Sam Renzel back on the ice sutures and all will start the rush over to Alex Blic. Left wing of center ice and he’ll flip it down the board deep into the lightning zone. Rides around to the near circle and a good hustling play by Lucas Reichel behind the net. Put it to the right corner. Connor Bard to Renzel right point to Lasic top of the left circle. guns a shot toward the net deflects wide off of Tyler Bertusi’s stick and the puck rides up the near boards and Hegel will play it down ice into the Hawk zone. Renzel on the puck beside the net snaps a pass up the right wing side to Bertusi. He’ll take the puck and go for a skate back into the Hawk zone between the circles and up the left wing side. Then he bats the puck ahead down ice deep into the lightning zone. No icing is called as Ryan Mcdana is felled with a body check there from Conor Adard. Hawks get the puck back at their blue line. Matt Grizzlick with a pass ahead Illy McKay of at the Lightning blue line. He sticks the puck down the boards in behind the Tampa Bay net and Darren Radish is on it behind the net waiting for the Lightning to assemble for their breakout. There’s Radish. Steps out behind the net. He’ll carry it ahead. Moves it on the right wing side at center ice. The puck is shot down behind the Hawk net by Holberg. Knight handling it. Put it around up the right wing side. Caravine and lifts the puck through the air down into the lightning zone. It’s a bouncing puck in the near circle coraled by Homeberg. Moves it ahead at center ice. Pork strand into the hawk zone to Gourd. He’ll fire for the left circle and a butterfly save made by Knight and the puck taken behind the Hawk net by Naya. Quick pass ahead Nazar over the lightning line to Terrain and near the right point. Jack hands it across to the left wing corner. Naya pulls it through traffic and then lost the puck between the circles and the lightning zone. The Bolts get it back. Moer to center ice sends the puck in over the hawk line on the left winged gourd. He sweeps the puck in front of the net. Goes all the way through to the far corner there to get it. Pontis Holberg put the puck up the farboards held in at the right point by Headman moves into the high slot. Sends it toward the net but it deflects wide. Moer in the near corner given a bump by the Hawks Archimoff who then takes the puck and sticks it behind the net up the far side and Donado will reverse directions on the puck and put it back in behind the Hawk net. Kaiser with a pass up the right single. Glenov tried to clear it out. Taken away by the Lightning. Coocherov firing from the top of the right circle that goes high and wide. Now Bard falls down along the near boards as he tried to get to the puck. The Lightning Doo and it popped on goal by Hedman. But a butterfly save is made by Spencer Knight. And he came up with the puck in his glove and held on to it there. Whistle and a face off in the Hawk zone. 1635 now left in the second. Hawks with a one- nothing lead. Yeah. And a little thing right there as Headmond was going to one-time this puck. Kaiser doesn’t have anyone to box out. But instead of trying to block the shot, he backs up out of the way. So Spencer Knight can step to the top of the crease, see the puck the whole way in. And as after he did that, Spencer catches the puck and goes right up to Kaiser and taps him on the shins telling him great job. And that’s when your goalender’s going well. Just let him see it just like Wyatt Kaiser did there. Another form of communication between the goalender and the defenseman. Very important as we rejoin the play. Lillberg hammered by Colton Doc in the near corner in the Hawkin. Puck is knocked free and the Lightning get it back in his NHL debut. A pass out to the line by Dominic James and a shot from Radish was blocked. Now the puck spun down ice by Blic. Hustling play by Slagard to get to the dots in the Lightning zone, negating the icing. Loose puck in the near corner in the lightning zone and Lillberg’s got it. He’ll escape behind his net. Put the puck over to Radish who lifts it through the air to the hot blue line. Murphy poke checked it away but not out. And now James took it top of the left circle. He’s hit as he sweeps one toward the Hawk net. Goes through the top of the crease and wide. Here’s Murphy with a handoff to McKay through center ice and over the lightning line. Dropped past Nazar. Top of the right wing circle. Nazar to the right corner. Swept it in front and that was kicked away by Vasileki. The puck ends up up in the protective netting and out of play. One- nothing Hawks. Spencer and Knight, when your goalender is going well, even the elite goal scorers in the league look differently at the net when they’re trying to score. And Spencer got to the top of the crease. He’s seeing everything right now, like we said. And Cooerov shot a puck about 3 ft over the net. What? And you’re into the shooter’s head when you’re playing that well. And they look at the numbers before the game and see his save percentage and how he’s doing. And right now he’s off to the first 24 minutes of this hockey game. A really good game again. Well, now here’s Cooerov picking up the pass in the lightning zone, carrying through center ice. Gave the puck to Churnack over the Hawk line down the left wing. He whips a backhander on goal from near the corner. Nice pad save made there by Knight. Grizzlick with a pass up the right wing side for McKay. He deflects it down ice all the way and icing is going to be the call here against the Hawks. So they’ll bring it back into the Hawk zone. This will be in the circle too. See which one the Lightning decide circle to Knight’s left. Lightning will get a line change. Then the one thing, you know, since the Blackhawks ice the puck, the guys have to stay on the ice, but Frank Nazar has been taking a lot of the Dzone faceoffs without Dickinson in the lineup. He normally is the guy that’ll take every Dzone faceoff, but Coach Blashel’s given a lot of confidence in the way Frankie Nazar has battled on the draws. Lightning win the draw. Here’s a wrist shot from the near the right point that off the stick of JJ Moer. A bread basket save made by Spencer Knight. So now Jeff Blashel Hawks coach will have the opportunity to get a new five out there and he does face off against circle to Knight’s left and Nick Felino will step in and take the draw. Nick can be very strong in these situations. Puzzi and Bernard out on the ice with him as well. And now Braden Point has been tossed off the dot. It’s going to be Jake Gensel facing off with Nick Felino. Dropping the puck. Felo wins it decisively. Put it behind the net. Creier to the puck. It’s in a pass up the right wing for Bard, but I think it handcuffed him a little bit. Puck bounces free and Gensel fires it down behind the net. Knight out to swat it away up the far side. Gensel recovers right point. Put it back in behind the net. Knight like the riverboat gambler there waiting for teammates to kind of get into an open space. This ends up sending a pass up the right wing side. Krabby at center ice had to roll off his stick. Point took the puck back for the Lightning at the Tampa line and waves it across the rink over in front of the Lightning bench. Nobody there but the Hawks. Tyler Bertusi. He’ll whip it down into the Hawk zone. Here’s Vlic now carrying to center and a pass on the right wing to Bard over the Lightning line. And a drop pass now for Reichel to Blic right circle a left shinoff he fires from the high slot that’s tipped wide Bard with the puck around to the bottom of the left circle fires blocker save Vasilleski Riel spins it out to the right point left shinoff to classic high slot over to Bernard and a one-time from the top of the left circle deflects off the stick of Heedman and up into the protective netting. If not for being 6’6 and have long reach and a long stick, no way does one of the Lightning players get to that. Great play by Headman recognizing where Connor was going for that one-time. He got to the top of the circle. Good play uh opening up for the one-time and as you said, Headedman stepped out there and he has a long reach and he did deflect it into the stand. But really good shift cuz remember that started in their own end and it started against Cooer off point in that big line and they neutralized them and ended up getting the offensive zone and getting a scoring chance on it. Here’s Dominic James stepping in to take the face off. Now he’s tossed off the dot momentarily, but he’s back in there against the Hawks, Lucas Reichel. And the Lightning get possession. Radish will spin it across up the left wing. Gourd at center ice to the aforementioned Dominic James. He was a two season teammate at University of Minnesota at the Luth with Wyatt Kaiser. Puck ends up across the rink over in front of the bench as Ryan Greens. Got it into the Lightning zone down the left wing. Sheds a check there from James. Then James strips the puck away. The Lightning get control. This is Homeberg to center ice crossing the Hawk blue line and from the left point firing a shot that goes wide. Loose puck into the right wing corner. James there spins it behind the net around to Lillberg beside the left circle to the line. Radish pumps a shot was blocked in the high slot by his teammate Homeberg. In behind the net, James knocked down by his former teammate at UMD, Wyatt Kaiser. Hawks get possession. Randonado in the far corner banks it behind the net around up the right wing side. It eludes Kaiser but not Lucas Reicho and he’ll backhand to center ice. Lillberg took it back. Sends Coocher off into the hot zone. Drops it off. Coocherov now back in front. He deflects it just wide then made a back pass and was shot from the line by Mcdell. They score the goal at 657 of period number two. They’re going to give this to Jake Gensel off of a chaotic sequence of play. Cucharov missed the initial shot. He’s trying to tip it into the Hawks goal. It went wide and then the puck was fed back up the slot and Gensel deflects this shot from around the deep slot area. And that goes by Knight. We’re tied at one. Yeah. And Cucherov had a great opportunity on a twoon-one. They deflected it wide as Knight did a really good job of pushing post to post and then somehow Spencer Knight was knocked down. He was laying on his back when that puck got thrown out to the slot. Went straight back to the point. There was the one-time from Mcdana from the top that Gensel was able to get a stick on it. Refs are walking over to Jeff Blill to see if he wants to challenge it and it doesn’t look like there will be a challenge. It looked like Spencer was just having trouble regaining his feet. So it’s Gensel’s second on the season from Ryan Mcdana. The goal of 657 of period number two. One to one as we rejoin the play in behind the Hawk net. This dump in by Mcdana eludes Knight but not Alexic but a pass up the right wing to Murphy. They’ll make a pass ahead now to Doc who sends the puck down to the right wing corner. Lightning zone. Slagger falls under Churnack. They get their sticks on one another. Hawks get the puck back. Vlic hammers one from the left point. The blocker saved by Vasilleski. And now a pass from Doc from behind the net out to the right circle for Murphy is over a stick and down. Hawks get the puck back. Classic passing up the left wing at center ice to Felo front of the benches. He flips it across diagonally to the right wing corner in the lightning zone. Doc had the puck behind the net and then lost it to the far corner. This was pushed out to center ice by Cooer taken back by Terravine and Murphy. Top of the right circle. Guns a wrist shot over the net up off the glass. Cucher with the puck along the right sideboards. Lightning zone turned it over but it ends up down behind the net and Vasileleski there to bail him out. Sticks the puck around up the near side and Mcdana will clear to center ice. Now Aar poked it back into the lightning zone. Mcdana clears the center ice taken back by Sam Renzel of the Hawks over the lightning line. Top of the right circle. He’ll fire and Mcdana blocked that. Mcdana’s got over 2,000 blocks in his NHL career. Hegel down the left wing side. Hawk zone fires has hit the post and ricocheted up off the glass. It’s produced by the NHL about where the players are on the the goals. It it uh it doesn’t have them in figurines, but little circles. It’s kind of neat to watch. It is. and and that game and as you’re analyzing it and from we’re in the press box, but when you when we talked about before the game when 96 is on the ice from the Blackhawk standpoint, you got to know he’s on the ice and you got to respect that. And Lebanon got a little bit out of position, got a little bit too far up the ice and here comes Cooerov down the middle of the ice and it forced the forward to have to come back into his own end first. That’s what caused all the confusion on that last play. I would think that’d be a tremendous coaching tool. Here’s James into the Hawk zone down the left wing side. fed the puck across and it’s sent high and wide to the Hawk net. Now Heedman a drive from the high slot. Bounces in on Knight. He turns it wide. Chaffy on the rebound. Sent it on goal. Knocked in behind by Knight. And then a follow-up shot was turned wide as well. Now in the slot and a beautiful play there by Louis Krebier knocking down the Lightning player Curtis Douglas. A big two big men colliding as the puck ends up at the Lightning blue line. And a pass ahead into the Hawk zone. Kaiser against the end boards takes a hit but shot it around up the right wing side to McKay of Hawkline goes rink wide with a pass there to Terabinan lifts the puck to the lightning blue line but doubling back home got it there but a pass ahead to Oliver Borkstrand X of the Columbus Blue Jackets he put the puck behind the Hawk Net Gourd from the left wing corner centers this is taken away by Connor Badar now to Lucas Reichel front of the Hawks bench a little handoff and McKay slaps it down behind the lightning net shot back around by Littleberg. Here now is Radish over the hawk line down the right wing side to the corner. Shot the puck through the crease to the left wing quarter to Gore. He fires it back through the crease and it rims up the farboards. Radish had trouble handling the puck. This bounces back to the Tampa Bay blue line. Mcdana took the puck there. Head to York Strand into the Hawk zone to the left wing circle. Had the puck stripped away. Left shinoff now moves it along the boards. Not out. Now Mcdana tried to center. This deflects the center ice. Ryan Donado’s got it. He’s into the lightning zone. Penalty coming up. Donado shoots the scores. Ryan Donado rips a wrist shot from the left wing circle on a delayed penalty. That’s four goals in his last four games. And the Hawks reassume the lead at two to one. What a shot by Donado. It was. And he was looking to try to get Connor going to the net back door, but Connor was interfered with by Ryan Mcdana on the back check. And because of that, Donado said, “I got to shoot this thing.” And man, did he rifle that one. Tony, do you have the time? Well, I can tell you this with that goal. It is time to break out the Bandido. Celebrate every goal this season with El Bandido Yankee Tequila. So, Ryan Donado’s goal at 1016. I mentioned his fourth in four games. That’s his fourth overall on the season. Two to one. The Blackhawks retake the lead. They get back to the play. Center ice. The Hawks get control off the faceoff and Donado takes a pass from Blic and swats it deep into the lightning zone, but this is going to be blown dead on an off side. They’ll bring the faceoff back out to center ice. Real momentum swings here. You know, the lightning seemed like they were all over it. And now I think they’re going to flash the red light on and take a break. Uh let’s see. They got the red light on downstairs, but so far we’ve got no indication from the officiating staff. And now we do. We’ll take a break. You were right. Sometimes I’m right. You know, it’s like a It’s like a broken clock. I’m right twice a day. 9:35 left in the second here in Tampa. Break out the Bandido, baby. Who’s Hot, Who’s Cold is sponsored by Plumbers 911 Chicago, where they do it right the first time. Well, you know a player in New York that’s very hot. Matthew Schaefer, two goals, five assists, seven points. His first six games, NHL record for an 18-year-old defenseman with six consecutive games to start his career with a point. He is hot. Not so hot. Nicholas Eers was one assist in his first game for the Carolina Hurricanes after a big contract signing there. Boy, when he took that money and went to Carolina, everybody was thinking probably the Canes fans were probably thinking, “We got our guy. This is our guy. He’ll put us over the top.” Well, they still might be, but we should have mentioned Ryan Donado before the game about being hot. He continued tonight with his fourth goal in four games to give the Black Hawks a lead. I’ll see what the Hawks can do to maintain the lead. Connor Bernard over the center ice circle now. Actually, Nazar crossing the lightning line on the right wing side. Back pass to the right point. Renzel to Vassic at the left point. Lassic moving down will fire and that hit the side of a lightning net to flex up off the glass and we get a whistle on a hand pass here against the Hawks. And going back to that goal that got the Blackhawks back in front, Connor Bernard made a good play in his own end. Shipped the puck out to the middle. Looked like he should get a secondary assist, which we haven’t seen added yet. And you saw Lucas Reichel, who we were talking about with great speed, knocked it over, lied to Donado, and Donado coming down that wing, kept looking for pass. He thought that Reichel or Bard were going to get back up in the play, but recognized that heck, I don’t have an option to pass it. I am going to use a big asset that I have in his shot and he rifled one past Vasileleski to respond to campus goal. Now Dominic James wins this next face off for the Lightning. And here’s Big Curtis Douglas. All 6’9 and 245 lbs of him from Oakville, Ontario. He is a relative if you can believe it. Tony Mandrich, former Green Bay Packer offensive lineman. First pick in the draft back in the day. Oh, he’s a big like man for sure. I didn’t I haven’t seen that big of a player like we know Char is the only other player that big played in the league. But this guy is a giant. He’s out there throwing the weight around a little bit. Lightning at center ice. Mcdana takes the puck, winds it down the left sideboards in behind the Hawknet far corner. Mcfelino pokes it back in behind the net to Kaiser. Quick hand off to Murphy on the right wing side. Then a pass ahead to Landon Slagger at center ice. Now it’s laid in front of the penalty boxes. Hawk captain Nick Felino there to nudge it down ice in behind the lightning net. Headman in the far corner. I tell you, Slagert’s been all over him like a bad rash. And that’s got to be a little irritating to the big man. Slagger doing his job. Here’s Gensel into the Hawk. Coughed up the puck to Alex Lacic who snapped it ahead. This is off of Headman stick and down deep into the Lightning zone. Victor Hedman back in the net will skate it out. Lead pass for Jake Gensel into his skates. deflects up over the glass and out of play right at the Hawk blue line. So, whistle will stop play. 733 left in period number two. 2-1 in favor of the Hawks. Then you can see Jeff Blashell shuffling the lines a little bit and it’s because of the 11 forwards, but he’s been very effective at getting the right players on the ice and right amount of ice time. But this line right here with Nazar and McKay and Terrainan have been real solid defensively and created some offense as well. Draw just outside the Hawk blue line at center ice. Oliver Borkstrand wins it back for the Lightning to Chernack. He flips the puck over to Mcdana who fires it in from center ice. Knight guides the puck in behind the net to Vassic. Passing over to Lou Krevier. He’ll pass up the right wing to center ice. Yorkstrand sends it back into the Hawk zone. Nazar the near corner leaving it for Krevier. Bumped off the puck by Gourd who’ll leave it behind the net. Here’s Bjorkstrand walking out and fires and that hits somebody in front. Ricocheted wide may have clipped the post. Now Bjorkstrand from the high slot will fire and that goes wide. This puck into the near corner. Nazar pokes it up the wards. Not out. Bjorkstrand firing from the left point that sails wide. Yanni Gourd was in front of the net creating a screen in the far corner in the Hawk zone. Trevier stabbing at the puck. knocks it free but it’s in his skates. Rolls out top of the left circle. Ryan Mcdana firing from there that deflects over the net off the glass and Holberg then slots at the puck. This goes back to the right point to Churnack. He’ll wave it down behind the Hawk net. Knight out the play into the far corner. Classic poking at the puck. Homeberg took it away for the Lightning. He fed it back into the high slot for Bjorn uh Oliver Bjorkstrand. And this deflects off his stick down to the Lightning blue line. Mcdana there with a lead pass. Gensel over the line down the left wing. Shot the puck right through the crease. This deflects away to Cooerov along the right boards to Headman at the line to Coocher off high slot. Bard reaching in there with a stick poke checking the puck to center ice will then knock it down ice deep into the lightning zone. They’re going to wade the icing. The Hawks take advantage and get a line change. They needed it. The Krebier and Blic got stuck out there a long time. A little sloppy D2D passing that allowed Tampa to get in on the forche and have a long shift and Cooerov’s line followed and good timing for Connor to make a great defensive play get it in deep to allow that line change. Edmond at center ice on the left wing lifting the puck down behind the Hawknet. Archiminoff will stick it up the left wing glass but not out of the zone. Puck was held in by Moer at the right point and he’ll send it down behind the Hawk net. Kaiser takes it back to Badard over the lightning line down the right wing side and he drives one toward the net. This hit the blocker of Vasileleski and ends up deflecting up into the protective netting. 529 left in period number two here in Tampa. It’s 2-1 Blackhawks. This is Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. Kaiser at the right point. Does a little spin on Yanni Gourd. Kaiser bottom of the right circle. Cuts in front and fires. And that was blocked away to the corner. Kaiser got it back and sent the puck in behind the net. Radish is chased out by Ryan Green to the near corner trying to shake the check. Radish put it in behind the net. Homeberg will stick it up the far side boards to center ice. Actually Lillberg and that’s into the skates of Wyatt Kaiser and deflects up into the Hawks bench. Well, Wyatt Kaiser there gets a faceoff win straight back to him from Connor Baddard and he’s on his off side and as the checker comes out from Tampa, he fakes the shot, does a spinama, goes around him and man-on-man coverage. When you beat your guy, you got a pretty good chance of attacking the net. He does and gets a good scoring chance there off of a faceoff win. Dominic James now to take the draw again, this time against Nick Felino, who wins it for the Hawks. Classic over the center ice circle. fires it down off the right corner boards and the lightning end. Radish handling it to the near boards to Lillberg. Shot it across the rink there to get it. Curtis Douglas will flip it down behind the Hawknet. Knight gave it to Renzel spun the puck up the right wing side. Slagger at the Hawk blue line will chip it ahead to the lightning blue line. Now here’s Lillberg again on the left wing of center ice in front of the penalty bench. Flips it down behind the Hawk net to the far corner. Lassic sticks the puck back in behind to the near boards to Slagard passing up the right wing side. Felina with a lead pass to Dock over the lightning line on the right wing to Slagert in the slot. Turns and fires and a butterfly slave save made by Vasilleski. That was a difficult save and an even I think a more difficult maneuver by Slagard to get himself some room to fire that shot. Here’s Renzel out of the Hawk zone to center ice. Rink wide pass Nazar. He’s over the lightning line on the left wing. That’s it behind the net around to the right sideboards. Terrain there shot the puck back in behind the lightning net. Churnack had it stripped away by Nazar who falls down under Cooerov and lost the puck. Churnack back of the net to Mcdana in the near corner. He’ll pass up the left wing over Cooerov stick to center ice. Connor Murfield right foot right back down the glass deep into the lightning zone. Puck circles. Send that up the far side. And here comes Gensel with a puck over the Hawk line. Right point to Coocher. Left circle. He shoots. Butterfly save made by Spencer Knight. Conor Murphy might have gotten a piece of this as he laid down in front of the shot, but Knight came up with the basket and held on. A faceoff will be in the circle to his right. Yeah, a little aggressive on Greslick trying to keep a puck alive at the offensive blue line, he wasn’t down early for his pinch and as the Gensel got the puck on the boards, uh, Grizzlick went down to get him. little chip by him and next thing you know Tampa’s on a rush and needs the goalender Spencer Knight to make a big save for him and it’s important now you get the lead with 341 to go here in the second and just playing solid defensively and you know for the most part the Hawks tonight have been very sharp but got to keep the foot on the gas pedal there and continue to stay on your toes but be responsible defensively. Now Anthony Cerelli is going to take this face off and Connor Bernard’s been tossed off the dot. Now it’s going to be Lucas Reichel against Celli who was undefeated on draws and he remains that way. Wins it back to Headman left point fires it over to the right circle of Hegel. Couldn’t get a clean shot away. Hawks get possession of the puck. Bedard between the circles. He’s chased to the far corner then flips it behind the net. The Kaiser. He’s chased out from behind the Hawk net by Gonzalez. Passes up the right side. Reichel at center ice. He’ll stroke it down the boards in behind the Lightning net into the far corner. Lard was all over his man Hegel there, but the Lightning get the puck back. Headman to Hegel right wing to center ice cutting in the Hawk line through the high slot. He’ll fire. Blocked by Louis Creier with a shin pads. Gonalves with the puck in the right corner. Put it out to the right point. Headmond there to Moer. Top of the left circle firing a shot that hits somebody in front. Bertusi send it ahead for Madard at center ice. One-on-one with Moer over the lightning line left wing. Drop passi left circle. He shoots and a shoulder save made by Vasilelesi. Now Heedman in the near corner took the puck behind the lightning net. Badard nearly stripped it away. Here’s Renzel along the Ray boards leaving the puck at the right point. Donado to Sam Renzel at the right point. He escapes through the high slot area. Turns at the left point. Was tied up there and Gonzalz is able to knock the puck down ice into the Hawk in. Renzel back to get it. Head to Donado. Back to Renzel. Hawk blue line. Quick pass on the right wing to Ryan Green. at center ice ace. He’ll flip it down the boards in behind the lightning net. Daselleski out to play it into the near corner to Heedman who shot the puck across the rink to Radish and he’ll lift it clear down ice into the Hawk zone. Alex Vic on the gallop back to get it backing up in the corner. Swept the puck out the center ice taken back by Braden Point in front of the lightning bench. Now Radish will fire it down the glass and this one deflects up into the crowd or actually into the protective netting anyway and a whistle will stop play. Down to 2011 left in the second of a two-1 Hawks lead. Yeah, Connor Bard had a little bit of an opportunity on a rush. He decided to cut through the middle and drop it to Tyler Batusi who was trailing. Batuzi got to the top of the circle and wristed one high and Basilei was able to get his blocker on it. Kick it to the corner. I’ll draw just outside the hot blue line at center ice. Going to be a couple of number 17s. Dominic James for Tampa against the Hawks captain Nick Felo who wins this faceoff. Murphy with a pass ahead for Doc into the Lightning zone is off his stick. Lightning back up ice. Mitchell Chaffy into the Hawk zone. Had the puck stripped away by Slagard over to Kaiser. Then a pass ahead to the Lightning line is off of Colton Doc stick. The Lightning take the puck back and they’re in. There’s Lillerg passing up the right side. James at center ice front of the benches. Deflects the puck into the right wing corner. Hawk zone. Kaiser carries behind net moves it around the right wing side but not out. James took the puck away left point. flips it down in behind the Hawk net. Kaiser becomes entangled with Chaffy. Chaffy goes down. Puck freed into the near corner. Murphy hit from behind there by Chaffy. Got it to Kaiser. Back of the net. He’ll sweep it around at the left wing side to Felino who sends the puck off the boards down into the lightning zone. And the Hawks will try and get a line change here. 110 left on the clock. Two-1 Hawks. Bradish through center crossing the Hawk line on the left wing. Dumps the puck down the boards behind the net. Knight out to play it to the near corner to Murphy. Waves it up the right side. Riel and he’ll pass across the ring for Bard. The pass was in his skates, but he kicks it down to the left wing corner in the lightning zone. Churnack in to take it there. We’re under a minute to play here in period number two. It’s 2-1 Hawks. Cucherov enters the Hawk zone down the left wing side. Put it over and a shot from the right circle from Mcdana. They score. So with 41 seconds remaining in the second period, the Lightning have tied the game and Ryan Mcdana has factored in on both Lightning goals here this evening. He was wide open in the right wing circle. Yeah, we talked about Tampa’s dejoining the play, especially late in the period being down. Gensel does a great job of driving the net, backing off the defenders and Mcdana goes to the dot on the far side. Cooerov coming down on his forehand side, waits for Mcdana to get there, open up for a one-time and perfect pass and little bit of over back checking and not kind of sort it out as they entered the zone. And one thing when Cuchv has the puck as a defender, sometimes you back off because you respect him so much. But the best thing to do is just play him aggressively and if you get beat at least your your support will be able to pick up for you. there. He gave too much time and found the passing lane and ties the game up for Ryan Mcdana. He’s having something of a career start. That’s his third goal on the season already. Cucherov picking up the assist on the right side boards in the lightning zone. Renzel pokes the puck down to the corner. The aforementioned Mcdana took it there. Passing it ahead to Gensel. He was tied up there by Renzel who strokes the puck in behind the lightning net. Chernack will move it out to center ice. Braden point with six into the Hawk zone. top of the right circle, guns it toward the net, blocker away by Knight. Two seconds, one the period will end. So, it’s all twos after two periods. Shots on goal favoring the Lightning 23-13. And those little I don’t want to call it a mental gap or a mental I don’t know. I I I really am not sure how to characterize it, but there just a little bit of a mental lapse late in the period. Well, can be costly in a game. I mean, first of all, 86 is one of the best players in the world, right? He won a heart trophy. He’s always up for, you know, player of the year. Uh, you know, they had the Hawks had numbers back, but they got a little bit mesmerized to 86 carrying the puck down there. And all he’s doing is baiting in. He’s trying to suck as many defenders to him as he can. He did. Actually, three Hawks all had their eyes on him. They’re all trying to sort it out. Patrizzy comes back as the forward. Renzel backs off. Classic backs off. He finds that lane down a joint. And you know, the Hawks had a good period, you know, and then and this is another one of the tests for the Blackhawks. They had control of the game there as period went along. They gave up a late goal. Now you’re going into the third period. And this is where the Blackhawks have to go, okay, we’re playing well, guys. Let’s get focused on making sure this is our best period of the night, maybe the best period of the year. Focus on the little things that it’s going to take to find a way to get two points out of this game. Well, statistically the third period hasn’t been as kind to the Lightning as it has to the Blackhawks. So, I guess we’ll just have to see how things all play out. But I would much rather see the Blackhawks in a position where they’re tied with a road opponent as opposed to chasing the score after two periods. That’s a bad place. Absolutely. And you got to remember when when Tampa got that first goal to tie it one to one, only just a couple shifts later, the Blackhawks were able to get going offensively and find a way to regain that lead on Donado’s goal. So, their response has been good, you know, and as a young team, that’s the one thing that I’ve been really impressed with is that they don’t get rattled. If something doesn’t go their way or something, they give up a goal. It’s not like it carries into the next five or six minutes or carries on to a bigger thing. They respond right away. They get back to playing the game and it’s trying to get going offensively, trying to stay on their toes and and playing with energy. And and that’s been very consistent throughout the year. This will probably be the biggest test they had this year cuz Tampa needs a win tonight. Let’s face it, with a slow start and with the schedule they got coming up, they got to start to accumulate some wins here and the Blackhawks will be tested for sure in the third. We’re going to find all of that out in a little while, but right now we’re going to send back to the station. Charlie Romelotus is standing by with a full intermission report for you good folks. And then third period action will follow along. We got a good one. By the way, back in Chicago right now at 7:25. I don’t know if any of you good folks are on the highways and byways, but if you are returning home from work late, please drive safely. Keep it right here. We’ll get you home. 22 the score after two here in Tampa. This is Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. What do the Blackhawks and United Airlines have in common? Hawks went into the first intermission with a one- nothing lead. Tampa Bay has countered with two of their own in that second period. Specifically, the one with 41.9 seconds left by Ryan Mcdana. Those are the ones that are are potential back breakers, the ones late in the period that give the opposition momentum going into the intermission, especially when trailing. Now, we find ourselves going into the third period in a tie game. But if you’re the Hawks, you’re still you’re obviously still in it. Lightning are out shooting Chicago 22 to 13. But I think the Hawks have to be pleased with the way that they’re playing knowing how desperate Tampa Bay was going to be coming into this game. So, we’ll see what the third period brings us. 11 other games on the NHL schedule. Let’s get to some of these scores. The Ducks and Bruins are still tied in the second period, but they went from 1 to1 to 2 to2 over in Boston. The Bruins are out shooting the Ducks 30 to 15 in that second. The Ottawa Senators have just taken a 2-1 lead on the Philadelphia Flyers. That game is late in the second period as well. A few other games currently midway through the second. The Pittsburgh Penguins are up 2 to1 on the Florida Panthers. The New York Islanders are up three to nothing on the Detroit Red Wings at home. The New York Rangers have just taken a 4-3 lead over in New York on the San Jose Sharks. Taylor Radish, former Blackhawk winger, has two of the goals for the Rangers. Mlin Celerrini also has scored twice for San Jose. The Sharks are looking for their first one of the season, an 04-2 start. They’ve been they had a two nothing lead and a 3-1 lead against the Rangers, but now find themselves down 4 to3. Over in St. Louis, the Utah Mammoth are rolling three to nothing midway through the first period. Logan Kulie has a three-point first period going on right now. Two goals and an assist. The Blues have just one shot on goal through 10 minutes in the first period. And then midway through the first over in Nashville and the Canucks uh Conucks Predators in Nashville. It’s nothing nothing. And then Kraken Winnipeg is is underway. That’s also a nothing nothing score. Three game three late games tonight. They’re kickoff in about 30 minutes or so. The LA Kings are over in Dallas to take on the Stars. The Hurricanes are in Colorado to take on the Avalanche. Two of the best teams in the NHL. Both of them have five wins on the season. And how about the Montreal Canadians in Edmonton? The six win Montreal Canadians over against the Oilers later tonight. That should be a good one. Zack Heyman, by the way, took part in the morning skate today for Edmonton. He’s not going to play in this game. He dislocated his wrist in game four of the Stanley Cup final last year, if you can remember, against Florida. Uh apparently he could return as early as November 1st. And in that game, November 1st, the Blackhawks are going to be in Edmonton. So, we’ll see if uh Zack Heyman, one of their prized wingers, is ready to return by that date. Elsewhere in sports, Thursday night football, the Vikings and Chargers are scoreless in the first quarter. That’s just underway in LA. And World Series game one tomorrow. The Dodgers travel to Toronto to face the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, in Tampa Bay, Hawks and Lightning are tied 2-2. We’ll take a quick break, then bring in Tony Granado to break down the first 40 minutes of action. You’re listening to Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. It’s Chris Cuomo from News Nation. Let’s head back over to Benchmark International Arena. Bring in Tony Granado. Tony, what’ you see in that uh second period? I thought there was a lot of good things for the Hawks. Unfortunately, as you know, when though when you allow a late one in the period, that that feels like a little bit of a back back breaker. Well, the there was a a player on the other team that’s one of the best in the world, if not the best in the world on certain nights, and Cooerov, and he made two plays. And I was just talking to Brian Engum about that uh last goal where McDunn opened up for the one-time and Cooerov entered the zone and kind of lully gagged and kind of just mesmerized the Blackhawks defenders to kind of all slow down. And then a couple guys thought, should I go to him or should I back off? And it opened up that passing lane. And and the best thing to do when Cooer off is on the ice is one, somebody’s got to go to him fast, but the other guys got to recognize, okay, he ain’t shooting the puck. He’s passing it most of the time. And that’s pick up guys. And and uh when you’re a great player and you can kind of lull the other team to thinking that I’m going to do something different, that’s when it opens up those lanes. And uh so two great plays by him. One was on the first one when on two-on-one when he missed the opportunity, he threw it right back into the slot. uh that ended up going on a point shot that got tipped in. And then on that one, it was just a one of those skilled plays of uh finding the the lane to to hit Mcdana, a late trailing D that joined the play for a one time. Coup is is such an interesting player to watch cuz there are times where he’s skating and you don’t even look like he doesn’t even look like he’s trying, but it’s almost like he’s trying to bait the defenders into biting because then he’ll make that quick move and just pass it. It It’s really beautiful to watch. Do you remember a player in the Blackhawks uniform with number 88? Oh, I got to go through the memory bank. I think I know. How many times he did that? And as a coach and as opposing coach when you’re trying to get your team ready uh to play uh Patrick Kane or a guy like Coov, you’re trying to tell them enough but not tell them too much, right? And so you’re always that fine line because you don’t want them thinking as the play’s happening, but you want them to be aware of things. And uh you know sometimes you over coach and when you over coach the players get out there and they think and lots of bad things can happen. So that’s what great players do. They affect the other coaches on their game plans they put into it. I don’t think BL Jeff Bashel did that at all tonight. Uh I just think that there’s a bunch of young players on the ice and Cucherov was able to, you know, like I say, meme him long enough to be able to make a couple plays. Can you confirm if Ryan Donado’s stick was seen smoking on the ice? Because he’s got a hot one. Four straight. is hot. You know, I chickenened out before the game. I was going to go Ryan Donado as my hot player and I said I don’t like jinxing, you know, the guys that I want to score tonight. So, I didn’t want to do that. So, I went with Matthew Schaefer, but I have it written down. I can show you when I get back into town. I originally had Ryan Donado and I hottest player in the league and I I didn’t do it and he remained hot because I decided to go with Matthew Schaefer instead. So, I’ll take a I’ll take an assist on that. I was going to say we should actually be thanking you that you didn’t jinx it cuz I feel like if you would have said it then maybe he would have Yeah. I don’t want to get in the way of Ryan Donado right now. And you know it’s funny because the first few games you could just see him a little uptight. A little uptight and when you get a come off a great season or career year and you get 30 goals. All you want to do is get one that next year to get you going. And the first game you play hard and you play well and you’re touching the puck, it just doesn’t, you know, it’s not going in right now. And then the second, third game going, you’re like, “Oh my gosh, I got to get one.” And then finally when he got one, you could just see deep breath. Okay, I can still do it. And then since then it’s like, give me the puck, man. I know what to do with it when I cross the blue line. And that was one I don’t know if I we just again, same thing. I was just talking with Brian England. I don’t know if he squared up to him. I think he he uh I don’t know if he’s thinking the pass might be coming across cuz Connor was trying to escape uh Ryan Mcdana uh who had who had taken a penalty uh that was a delayed penalty going to be happening. Uh, but Connor looked like he was going to be able to get by him. So maybe Vasileleski was reading maybe it was going to be a pass. And man, did he pull the trigger on that one. That’s a wicked wrist. And from coming from Boston, that’d be a wicked wister. Wicked wister. All right. Good stuff, Tony. We’ll talk in the postgame show. Sounds good. Thank you, Charlie. Yep. That was Tony Granado. Hawks and Lightning tied 2-2 going into the third. We got one more break and then we’ll set up that third period next. You’re listening to Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. Boys, what’s it going to take for the the Blackhawks to get it done here in these 20 minutes? Well, I’m going to defer to the knowledge of Coach Granado over here. Tony, what do you think? Well, I I think that they should be a confident team with what’s gone on so far to start this season. Uh I also think they got to respect their opponent knowing that these are critical points like we keep mentioned for Tampa. Uh so, be ready for the challenge. They’ve been ready for every challenge that they’ve been faced with this year. Uh and and it’s pretty simple. The the mentality has to be on your toes. The mentality has to be win the next race, win the next battle, and focus on the little details that Jeff Blash has been preaching since the start of train kick. Well, James wins this face off for Tampa Bay, and we’re underway here in the third period. Lightning come out of their end. Moer to center ice on the right wing. Fires the puck down the boards deep into the Hawk zone. Off James stuck onto that at Chaffy. But at left point Heedman, he put the puck down the boards, picked off by Doc, who shot it across the rink but not out. Moer right point leaving the puck for Headman. Sent it toward the front of the net and that was blocked. And the other way come the Hawk three on one led by Slagger through center ice over the Lightning line. Right circle brought it to the net and fires and Basilleski down with a butterfly save. That looked like it hit him in the head gear here. The Lightning the other way. James into the Hawk zone to the right wing circle. Turns and fed it back into the high slant. Gonalves. He’s taken then into the far corner by Nazar. Knocked off the puck and the Hawks will get it back. McKay to center ice ace flipping the puck over the far glass and up into this Tampa Bay crowd. Whistle stopping play. I want to share with our listeners. Nikita Cucherov has two points so far in this hockey game. His next point is career point 10,000. Let’s hope we’re not talking. Yeah, I don’t want to see that one. Yeah. Yeah. But what a start to the period for Slagard in his line. He starts with uh Felino and he starts with uh Doc and they have a great defensive zone coverage and they get a threeon one out of it. Slagger takes the puck to the net and gets a great scoring opportunity that Basilleski has to stand tall on. Now Renzel far corner Hawk zone knocked off the puck by Gonalves who put it up the slot and Hegel fires. Knight is down with a butterfly save and holds on. The whistle will stop play. First of all, it’s a tremendous save. Second of all, how do you control that rebound? I mean, it’s a one-time from 8 ft in front of you and you’re on your knees and you’re coming across the crease and somehow is like a sponge there that he absorbs that puck. Uh he was deep in his net. He was able to push off and follow that puck somehow. And Hegel, who hasn’t scored a goal yet this year, I don’t think. And uh he’s going to be thinking about that one all night. Now the draw inside the Hawk zone. One by the Lightning. Mcdana from the left point carries down to the halfboards, tosses it across and now Chernack firing for the right point, blocked in front of the net. Hawks doing a pretty effective job of blocking many of the Tampa shots with the bodies in front. We get a whistle on an offside called here to the Blackhawks as they came up ice on a rush and Nazar couldn’t hold the line on that rush. So, we’ll get a face off back to center ice. By the way, this reminder, hey Blackhawks fans, you want to suit up like the pros? Well, now you can. The brand new Centennial jersey is here. It’s cool, by the way, folks. Whether you’re at the arena watching with friends or repping the Hawks around town, this is the jersey to celebrate our 100-year legacy in style. Don’t wait. You can grab yours today in stores or online at cbhshop.com. Back in the Hawk zone behind the net, Spencer Knight out to drive the puck around to the left wing side to Reichel to Bedard over the lightning line to the left wing boards. Looked like he was tripped by Churnack. No penalty called. Lightning get the puck. Coocherov hooks it up the right wing at center ice to point. Hands it back to Coocher. Enters the Hawk zone. Put the puck to the left wing side to Gensel. He lost it down in behind the Hawk net. Lucas Reich back to take it there and lifts it down ice to the Lightning blue line. JJ Mo there for Tampa Bay. Ahead to Gensel to point into the Hawk zone along the left boards. Back to Gensel left point. Firing a shot that goes wide. Rebound and a backhand shot by Cutterov. hit the post. He put that over the shoulder of Knight and it hit the far post behind him. Kaiser then takes the puck and he’ll spin it all the way down and icing will be the call. And this may be this may be reviewed here, Tony. I mean, it was a play that was a slap shot from the top uh of the blue line that bounced off the boards. Coocher was standing at the back post, went off the end boards and bounced right to him on the back side of the net. He kind of pitchforked it backhand and it looks like it goes up and underneath the bar from where we’re at, but referees are pointing face off and might have just caught the top of the crossbar. But we will see if there is a challenge here. I think Spencer got a portion of that with his equipment. He waved at it with his glove hand and then it hit the far post and a good alert play there by Louis Krebier to whip it out of harm’s way. That one was as close as they come to going in. Faceoff circle of Knights left. Borkstrand facing off against the Hawks. Connor Badar and the Hawks end up with a puck. Riel with it. Carries out the center ice up the left wing. Being hacked and whacked by Borkstrand, but sends it down. And icing is going to be the call here. They’re going to say that Riel didn’t clear the center ice red stripe before sending this puck down. This is danger for the Hawks now. Well, the one thing that’s danger is the guy wearing 96 in blue. He’s got the two assists tonight. He had a great opportunity on that one. He’s had a couple other great scoring chances. And uh if I’m on the Blackhawk bench now, I’m just reminded, hey guys, when he’s on the ice, let’s just play it the right way. Let’s not back off from him. Let’s play him hard, but let’s establish a fortune. Let’s make him play in Dzone. That’s one of the things he does not like to do and possibly catch him sleeping in his own then and be able to get a lead that way. Puck comes free off the draw. Hawks get it. Vertusi tossing it down ice into the lightning zone for Kaiser. He was held up. A penalty coming up here to the Lightning. Hawks can forge ahead. Holding will be the call. Hawks going to the Sitco power play. Score savings on every Phillip with Club Sitco. Download the app now to start saving. Tampa Bay number 43 minor minor power for holding. All right, we’re going to say this again. Team speed. So on most teams, you’re not going to see a D chasing a puck down that’s flipped into the offensive zone. But Kaiser saw an opportunity to join the rush. A good high flip play that was behind the D that he chased down. Grtusi makes a beautiful play. It’s like a a pass behind the D and because of that, Kaiser draws the penalty and gets the Blackhawks back on the power play. The Hawks one for two on their power play. The draw one, however, by the Lightning. Puck taken in the near corner by Brandon Hegel and he’ll fire the puck all the way down. Knight stopping it behind the Hawk net for Renzel. Passes up the right wing at center ice front of the benches. Badard to Renzel over the center ice circle. Rips it down the glass in behind the lightning net. Churn got hold of it there for Tampa Bay and he’ll clear it all the way down. Knight has to wait for the puck to come out of the area outside the trapezoid. And now we’ll play it ahead to Renzel at center ice to Badart Hawk blue line. He’ll step ahead through center ice over the lightning line. Dropped past Renzel high slot to Bertusi along the left boards back to Renzel at the line. Deep slot put it over right wing circle. Terrain whips it down to Bertusi back of the net. Fed the puck up the slot. Gensel reaching in will deflect the puck down ice into the hawk zone and Renzel back to take it there. Head to Frank Nazar at center ice. Nazar into the lightning zone near the left point. put it down to the left wing boards. Bertusi then to Nazar left circle. Took a slash but whips it over to Terrain and to Bernard. High slot back to Terrain and a one-time sails wide. Bard recovers the puck near the left point over to Terrain and top of the right circle. Put it beside the net. Bertusi tried to go from backhand to forehand. Get a shot away. Had the puck slotted away. Recovered by Badard who takes a high stick and a penalty is going to be called here to the Lightning. And this may be four minutes. Connor checking out his face. He was slashed and they’re going to have a look at his face to see if that one caught him and drew any blood. And if it did, what an opportunity for the Hawks. They’ll be five on three for at least 37 seconds. I mean, that’s a that’s a blade high stick. He catches him for sure on the upper body as uh looks like it’s only going to be a minor. The referee’s coming over to take a look at Connor. talk to the Blackhawk bench. Hey, what a it was a great play by Sarah Lion and recognizing the ref’s arm goes up of giving the puck to Tampa. Tampa penalty number 37 double miner. Four minutes. What a chance for the Hawks. And I was talking about Tervine and you want more time five on three as opposed to six on four. So you soon as you see the ref on a arm go up for a delayed penalty when you’re on the power play, give that puck to the opposing team to get more time on that five on three in this situation. Get the remaining 37 seconds of five on three and then it’ll go to five on four for the next 3 minutes and 23 seconds if I did my math right. That’s right. That’s right. This is a sitco power play. Score savings on every fillup with club sitco. Download the app now to start saving. So Bard stays on there and now he’s been told to head to the bench because of the trickle of blood. Obviously would supposedly necessitate medical care. Jeff Lashel right at the door of the Hawks bench arguing with the officiating staff here as is assistant coach Mike Valucci. There’s two options there. They could start this face off with four guys. Instead, he puts Felino out to take the draw. He’s going to win the draw hopefully and then change right away. He does win the draw. Like to see Nick score a power play goal here. He has four career goals against Vasileleski. Hawks control off the draw. Five on three advantage. Coocherov actually, excuse me, Terrain. Bottom of the left circle. Nazar. Back to Terrain. Long shot. Shoulder save made by Vasileleski. Renzel to the rebound along the right boards. Now to Felino to Berusi. Right wing corner back to Felino. 13 seconds on the five against three over to Renel. One timer and that deflects wide of the net. Fino got it back. 6 seconds on the five on three. Terrain into Felino beside the net. Jams it in front. It bounces free. Nazar’s got the puck now. Nazar top of the left circle. Radish out of the box. It’s now five on four power play. A shot from Terrain and near the right point. Tumbles wide. Here’s Nazar. Left circle. Tavine in high slot. Carries the puck over to the right wing corner. Whips it back now to Nazar. Top of the right circle. Here’s Nazar. Put it down on goal. Pad save made by Vasilelesi. Puck taken away by Radish who clears it off the near glass. And we get a whistle as this is knocked out of the air with a high stick. So the Hawks are down to 259 of Sitco power play time. The game is 2-2 with 1459 left in period number three. Yeah, I didn’t mind the movement and Nazar had a great tip on a one-timer that Renzel pounded that he just uh tipped just wide. Uh now the referees are over at the bench looking at Conor Bard to see if he is able to come out on the ice. If he’s still bleeding, he’s not allowed to, but looks like he is on being permitted to come back into the play. So he’ll be part of this second unit cuz his unit is off. So we’ll be out there with Doc Lechonoff, Donado, and Green. This will be a faceoff in the circle to the left of Spencer Knight. And it’s one by Badard to the nearboard to Lechoff. He’ll carry behind the Hawknet. He’s immediately pursued and defended by Hegel, but the Hawks get the puck. There’s Baddard dropping it back for Leoff. The puck rolls off his stick and down and on goal and Knight will put it in behind the net and Lechinoff picks it up there. He’ll skate the puck out of the right wing to center ice. Drops it behind himself. Ryan Green there front of the benches. Got the puck to Bernard over the lightning line. Twisting and turning to the left circle leaving it for Doc. A shot was blocked. Green got it back behind the net to Donado along the right boards to Leoff straight away. He drives one from the line and that goes wide. Lightning get the puck back. Moer will clear it down into the Hawk zone. Left shin off of the pass ahead Ryan Donado crossing the lightning line. He was knocked down along the near boards. Puck taken by Cerelli behind the net to Mcdana. Drove it around not out. Left shin off right point. Moves it left point now to Bard down to Colton Dock back of the net. He’s leaned on by Moer who works the puck free. Cerelli clears it away but not out. Nice keep in by left shin off left point to Donado. Top of the right circle. Whips it over. Bottom of the left wing circle now to Bard. He sent it into the crease. Slapped out of there. Bernard got it back along the left side boards. 145 on the power play. Baddard now to the left wing corner. Gave it a duck. He’ll fire from the top of the left circle that goes wide. Puck recovered at the right point by left. Down to Green back of the net. Put it around to Bard in the left wing corner to Green again behind the net. Back to Bard. Bedard in the left wing circle navigating through the high slot. Tried to put it over and did to Bertusi who sent it down in front. Picked off by Moer of the Lightning and he’ll clear it down. 120 on the Hawk power play. Knight to the puck beside his net. Leaves it for Sam Renzel. He’ll carry to center ice and made a back pass. Picked off by Gensel. Gensel now then gave it away. Here’s Bedard with the lead pass for Bertusi down the left wing into the lightning zone. Chernack took the puck away. Spun it behind the net. Heedman guides it around. Terrain in the right corner to Renzel. Right point had a stick lifted. Puck taken away. Hegel the other way. Short-handed over the Hawk line. Drop pass now to Heedman. Back to Hegel right circle tried to reset of the puck picked off by Nazar to Badard at center ice on the right wing. He lost the handle on the puck and Hedman will send it all the way down. 40 seconds left on the Hawk power play. Terrain out to center ice. Send it over the lightning line. Here’s Renzel. Drop pass now to Nazar to the right circle. Then right wing corner to Terrainan. Whips it behind the lightning net. Left wing corner. Renzel leaving it there for Bertusi to Renzel at the line. deep slot now to Vertusi. Top of the left circle over to Tervine into Renzel. He’ll hammer a shot on goal and a blocker save made. The Vertusi stick was slashed in half. No penalty called. Nazar now drops it left wing corner. Donado walking the goal line. Fed at top of the left circle. A shot from Renzel in and out of the glove of Vasilleski. And the puck cleared all the way down by Pontes Holberg. And the Lightning have successfully killed off this disadvantage. And that’s a huge momentum swing for them. Basilleski with a puck behind the Lightning net. Put it around up the left wing side to Gensel to Braden Point who was hooked on the way through to center ice. Lightning are going to get a power play. Coocher on the right wing boards put a pass into the slot. Picked off by Vlic. And the whistle blows. We’ll now have a Lightning power play when we return. 1139 left in period number three of a two-2 game. Chicago penalty number 84. Truman and Miner hooking. This is Blackhawks hockey on 720 WGN. They’re 0 for two so far. Keep in mind Nikita Cucherov is at 999 career NHL points. He has had a tremendous career for this team and uh growing into some kind of an institution with the Lightning. Lightning control the draw. The aforementioned Coocher with it in the right wing circle. Put it into the high slot. Headedman back to Coocher. He had it across. Bjorkstrand fires from the left circle high and wide. That’s a break for the Hawks. Edmond from the right wing point. Put it down to the right wing corner. Lic tried to send the puck out. And Blast was probably on the other bench telling Tampa what to do in this situation last year. So, he’s got an advantage of knowing what Tampa’s plays are in a six on five situation. He’s making the guys aware of it. I’m sure we’re going to see out there. We’ll probably see Conor Murphy out there and and I’m going to tell you, McKay and Galino probably will be on the ice. Looks like Conor Bard might get the the assignment here. As we know, Tampa will be pulling the goalie very shortly. Well, Donado, his fifth on the season from Nazar and Terrain at 1906 of the third. So, here we go. Buckle up. Buckle down, boys. 53 seconds left in regulation. Felo wins the faceoff back into the Hawk zone. Vasileleski now heads to the Lightning bench, but the Hawks get possession. This hit the skate of Alex Blic and deflects up into the protective netting. And Tony, we look down on the ice. We see a very frustrated Nikita Coocher off right now. We do. He made a big mistake there that gave that Black Cox that last goal. But what I liked on that last play, Connor Bernard, okay, probably should have been selfish. Probably should have gained center ice and shot that puck into the empty net. He tried to be unselfish and the puck got picked off and turned back into his own end. I threw it to the corner to kind of finish this game off, but instead the whistle blew with 2.4 seconds left as the clock was reset from 1.9 to 2.4. A clean faceoff win and we can go home. Felo against point circle to the right of Knight dropping the puck to Lightning. Get it. Cut off fires that hit a teammate. Ricochets to the corner and time lines off the clock and the Blackhawks hold on for a 3-2 victory down here in Tampa. Outstanding work by the Blackhawks all game long. Spencer Knight turning aside 29 of 31 Tampa Bay shots. And the Blackhawks got it done on the power play, but especially on the penalty kill. They killed all of the Tampa Bay Lightning power plays, all four of them. And there were a couple of huge ones. And Spencer Knight came up big in goal. We’ve already talked about Spencer, but what a win for this young team, especially uh on how it kind of all transpired, giving up a goal, kind of getting a little bit sloppy when Cooerov was on the ice, but staying with it. Obviously, big saves by Spencer Knight were really key. But what I enjoy most, the celebration after being uh all the hugs on the ice and and I think the guys can’t wait to get in the room and hand Jeff Glassel that gamewinning puck one. But look at all these Blackhawk fans here celebrating the victory as we as we look around the stands and see uh lots of happy Chicagoans here in Tampa. There’s a ton of them and they uh they’re they’re engaged in a couple of let’s say let’s say some reparte with a couple of the Lightning fans, but they’re having a good time. Tony’s got something to tell you folks. I sure do. All Blackhawk wins this season are sponsored by Circa Sports Illinois. Hey, download your new bookie today at circusports.com.
