Butz had been hospitalized with an illness that dropped him from 313 pounds to 287 pounds. On the morning of October 25, 1987, he checked himself out of the hospital to play in the Redskins’ game against the Jets. With the Redskins trailing 16-14 with a few minutes left in the game, and Butz having felt dizzy during the second half, he sacked Jets quarterback Ken O'Brien, effectively killing their drive. The Redskins scored on their next possession and won the game 17-16. Butz then immediately checked himself back into the hospital after the game

To this day, I don’t know exactly why, but when I was little I adopted Dave Butz as an unofficial middle name…
My Dad took me to training camp and I remember walking behind him. He was so huge he blocked out the sun.
These guys make our current defense look like teeny tiny kindergarteners.
Those were absolutely the days!👍
Dave Butz for Utz, loved his play, his battered helmet and his toughness.
I never heard the story. This is amazing!
