Milwaukee Brewers DESPERATE for Offensive Spark in Must-Win Game 2

The Brewers got to pick it up offensively. Last four games, they have reverted back to what we saw during the council years. We can’t have that. It’s going to be a short series against the Dodgers if things don’t pick up offensively. You are Locked On Brewers, your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Hi everybody, Chuck Freeman, longtime sports cer here in the state of Wisconsin, proud host of Lockdown Brewers, part of the Lockdown podcast network. We are your team every day and again we’re doing these shows daily. Thanks for joining me early on a Tuesday morning here after game one at AFM Field. Yeah, the Brewers offensively couldn’t get anything. Blake Snell was great, but they couldn’t get anything done until the ninth inning against the Dodgers bullpen. That trend cannot continue to happen. We’ll talk about that and why game two is a mustwin for the Milwaukee Brewers. We’ll also talk about the pitching matchups. Got to get one from Freddy coming up on Tuesday night, but he needs help. He He needs help offensively because we can’t be running seven pitchers out there every game. All right, this episode is brought to you by the good folks at FanDuel. FanDuel. Uh right now, new customers, you bet five bucks, that bet wins. You get $300 in bonus bets to access across the app. Download the app today. FanDuel, America’s number one sports book. Yeah, Blake Snell. I mean, the guy is tough. The Brewers have had some good numbers against him over the years. One and two. He was lifetime versus the Brewers coming into this one. An RA of over five, but from the very beginning, man, he had that change up working. He was tough. And the Brewer hitters were flailing. He struck out 10, faced the minimum. Only guy to get a hit off of him was Bryce Terang. And that was early in the game and he ended up getting picked off. Ended up getting picked off. So, not much happening. The Brewers pitching was great. We’re going to get to that. But the Brewers needed to they they got to get stuff going offensively. You cannot completely lean heavily on this pitching staff. These guys out of the bullpen are doing their stuff. Yeah, Preachster gave up the solo home run to Freeman tonight, but got to score some runs. You can’t wait. You can’t think you’re going to win these games by scoring one, two, maybe three runs and leaning on the pitching staff. It worked against the Cubs the other night. They, you know, leaned on the pitching staff, got three home runs. You know, you look at those two games against Chicago that they lost at Wrigley. Offense wasn’t there. I mean, the offense was great in the first two games of the series, and I think the offense has been terrific for the most part all summer long. Where has it gone? Where has it gone? If that trend doesn’t if that trend continues, it’s going to be a long it’s going to be a short series, but it’s going to be a long flight back from uh Los Angeles, I’m not ready to go out there and and lose two in a row. It’s been too long of a season. These guys are better than this. Bryce Terang in the ninth inning. Okay, the Brewers finally get something going in the ninth inning. He’s got to take that ball off the leg, right? His baseball instincts. The Brewers had the Dodgers on the ropes in the ninth inning. Base is loaded. Inside pitch on Terra, he backed away. It would have hit him probably in the leg. I know your baseball instincts take over and you get away from a pitch like that. But my goodness, I think at that point he’s got to take one for the team. Tell you, there’s one guy in the lineup who would have taken one for the team there and that was our guy Durban. Without question, he would have jumped into that pitch, but so be it. And then he struck out on the next pitch. Tang did and that was the ball game. But the Brewers did not get stuff going until the ninth inning. They had so Suzaki out of there. I first of all, Blake Snell was gone after eight innings. He goes 103 pitches. Thank God. You know, these managers love to just go on the pitch count. Snell said he could have pitched the ninth inning, but he goes, “Ah, you know, he’s going to be politically correct there and say, well, you know, I’m going to listen to my manager. Dave knows. Dave Roberts knows. So great.” I thought when he get once he got out of there, but I know Suzaki has been terrific as well. So when Suzaki gets into the game, walks guys and gives up a double to Bowers, the straightaway center, they’re going to Here we go. Walks a guy, walks um Yelich. Bases are now loaded and I’m thinking here we go. Here we go. Terra gets up there. They pull Suzaki, which I’m even loving this even more. Suzaki is now in the game. I don’t care if he is struggling. I’m glad he’s out of the game because that guy could find it real quick. They bring in Blake Trinan, who’s just terrible. And Terra goes down on strikes on a two- two pitch, but he should have taken that one off the leg. But it should have come down to that, right? Offensively, let’s get some things going there. Looking terrible at the plate. This kind of reminds me of the council years right now. I thought we were through being lifeless at the plate and the last four games. This is not the time to be this way. This team has been great all summer. And when we got to the bottom of the ninth inning, 11 walk-off wins for the Brewers this year. I thought, here we go. Got a man on with one out. Bowers hits that one to center field. That one hops over the fence. And you’re thinking, here we go. More late inning magic for the Brewers. And they couldn’t get it done. Could not get it done, man. But the pitching pitching did its job. Ashby, Prister, Patrick, I think I said Priest gave up that home run. It was Patrick. Patrick gave up the home run. He gave two hits. Yeah, Patrick didn’t look good. He struggled a little bit. But that’s the thing is when you use six or seven pitchers and in this case the Brewers use six pitchers, five relievers, one starter priest who came in in the second inning. When you use that many the whole operation, everybody’s got to do their job and what all it does take one guy not to do it. Now the Brewers, I’ll take that still. You’re telling me my bullpen guys and Pester through eight innings give up just one run. Now, Urebe in the ninth inning walked in a run. He had a Urebe had some issues in the ninth inning. He had three walks. Okay? And the Dodgers were able to get an insurance a huge insurance run in the ninth inning. But I’m not going to put this on a rebate. I’m not going to put this on uh Chad Patrick or anybody else. This is on the offense again tonight. Offense, how about picking up the pitching? Let’s not revert back to those days where we’re just sitting on a two to one lead or in this case trailing one- nothing hoping and praying the pitching could hold us through and then somebody could squeeze one through and get a base hit or pop one over the fence. That’s what I felt was happening tonight. Now Blake Snell was great tonight. I mean that change up was fantastic. Yeah, Durban can’t get picked off of first base. I don’t think the bats were real great tonight by the Brewers. I I I really don’t. And Snell’s one of those guys who’s going to make you chase and I thought the Brewers did a little bit of that tonight. And that’s out of their comfort zone. That’s not what they do. Looked up the scoreboard in the ninth inning. Dodgers 11 runners left on base. So they had their chances to pad that lead. Brewers, no runners left on base. Well, they only had one hit through the first eight innings. and they strand the bases loaded to finish off that game. Then there was that unusual double play that what 862 double play which kept the Brewers in the ball game at Muny should have had a I mean could have had a grand slam right there. Turn the Brewers turned into a double play and inning ending double play something you’ll probably never see if you watch baseball for a hundred years. I know everybody in the locker room was talking about that with the the media, but to me, it’s the offense. It’s the offense that’s a problem. Yeah, that double play kept the Brewers into the ball game, but you know what? Snell could have pitched 15 innings. The Brewers weren’t going to score against him tonight. So, yeah, you got to credit Snell for being great, but the Brewers have not been good offensively. Have not been good offensively in four games. And if you want to advance to the postseason, you’ve got to be better than that. Yeah, that that double play incredible. Go to Twitter if you haven’t seen it. I’m sure everybody’s watched the game tonight, but that was just amazing. But when Shrining comes in in the ninth inning, when Dave, you know, you always look for Dave Roberts. I mean, all these guys like to overmanage. You know, Dave Roberts is going to overmanage a little bit. He’s going to take his guys out when he doesn’t want to stretch them out a little bit too much. And he saw Suzuki uh Suzaki struggling out there. But I still I’m going with Suzaki with his amazing stuff. Blake Trining comes in and I bet I’m telling you Dodger fans must have been on their knees just hoping and praying Trining gets that final out. I thought the Brewers would strike against him. Brewers 6-0 against the Dodgers in the regular season, 0 and1 against the Dodgers in the postseason where it counts most. And I don’t want to hear it, Brewers fans, about the Dodgers having our number. I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear about that pessimist. I’m going to try to talk you off the ledge coming up next because game two is a must-win for these guys. Must win for these guys. Coming up, game two. We’ll tell you about that coming up next here on Lockdown Brewers. Lockdown Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team every day. And Monarch Money, a terrific sponsor. I ran into him. Says he watches it every morning and that’s where he watches it. YouTube. Go to YouTube, search Locked on Brewers on YouTube. Hit the subscribe button, hit the bell. That alert you every time we drop an episode of Locked On Brewers. Yeah, I’m I’m about done talking about tonight’s game. I mean, tonight’s game, I’ll just say this. Murphy in the postgame press conference said it was the best pitch game the Brewers have had against him. So, he’s he’s putting it on Bowers or he’s put on Bowers, he’s putting it on Jake Snell being great. Bowers was the one guy offensively who showed me life tonight, but that was off Suzaki. But to put that game to to rest and look ahead to game two and I know I opened up my Twitter account tonight and the first message I got, the first message, Chuck, the Dodgers have our number in the postseason. Guys, we we got to stop thinking that way. All right. Yeah, the Brewers went six and0 in the regular season. You can throw that out. I I get that. I get that. And I know the Dodgers here in the postseason seems like they’ve hit a different gear, right? This is this is not the Dodger team I I’ve seen this summer, but they were for the taking tonight. Dodgers offensively didn’t do anything. Otani’s continuing to struggle at the plate. Freeman hit that home run ball that near that was a that was an Amfam Park home run ball. You know what those are? Yeah. Vaughn hit one the other day where you hit it up and somehow it just keeps stretching and stretching and stretching. That one stretched over the fence in right field. That short porch in right field, but it was a home run. Freeman has tormented the Brewers in the past. I get that. But still, it wasn’t like the Dodgers crushed Brewer pitching tonight. The story of this game, Blake Snell. And you know what? I’m not going to let one loss get me down. But I will say again, offensively, Terra, even though he’s had a couple of clutch hits, doesn’t look great offensively. I don’t know, not your classic four hitter, and I think he’s had an MVP type year, but Tang’s got to lead the way. And you know what, Yelich has got to step it up, too, right? There’s so many guys. I mean, when you have two hits on the night and I thought those in game five, I mean, when they clinched against the Cubs, three solo home runs, it wasn’t like they were they stranded boatloads of guys on base there too, right? And we the good thing that didn’t come back and bite them, but it was the pitching that carried them in the way. I’ll tell you what, game two, this is a must-win because you can’t go back to Los Angeles down 02 as it is. If you go down 02, you are forcing yourself to win four of the next five games against a playoff tested world championship tested team like the Los Angeles Dodgers who’s got MVPs in their lineup and all that. Yeah, show isn’t great right now. He had three walks tonight. Brewers pitched around him to get the mookie bets. I mean, that’s that’s how solid the Dodger lineup is. You pitch you pitch around Otani, you walk Otani so you can get another MVP Betts who’s not having a great year, but has kind of turned it on as of late, bounced into a double play ball at one point tonight. But you have to come back and getting a split here 1-1 going to Los Angeles. The Dodgers would take that and at this point we would take it for sure, but you can’t lose on Tuesday night. You just cannot lose this game down 02. Going back to Los Angeles, I would not feel good about this series going back to not that the Brewers can’t win there, but you’re stacking your the odds against yourself. And Freddy Peralta is going to be pitching. And I think Freddy, yeah, he didn’t pitch well at Wrigley Field last week. Gave up the first inning home run to Hap, the three-run bomb. And he gave up a solo home run to Bush in his first playoff start here um nine days ago on a Saturday night against the Cubs or Saturday afternoon against the Cubs in game one. So yeah, Peralta’s got to come out, you know, he is a Sai Young candidate for a reason, but the Brewers need to come out and not only get a solid pit pitching performance, there’s going to be some guys, I mean, they’re they’re using some of these guys. Ashby, I mean, how many times are we going to run Ashb out there? Patrick running him out there the last two nights? He’s been great, but you just can’t you can’t be relying on him all the time. McGill and Urebe, I would even though they pitched tonight, I think they would be ready to go. Ube pitched on Saturday and so did McIll. He had the day off on Sunday. Maybe that reset them, but I would think that they’re going to be ready to pitch tomorrow. And who else comes in this game? If Peralta, who’s going to be the emergency guy if Peralta can’t get it done? Right. The Brewers are running out of guys like that. It’s probably Tobias Meyers. I think Tobias is probably the guy up. Tobias, one thing I’ve been hitting on and who is pitching in these games, Tobias Meyers, I think, is going to be the second guy up tomorrow after Peralta. If if Peralta shows any signs of struggling, and you know how these managers are, and Murf is, they will get Peralta out of there. And I think our season, the fate lights, lies with Tobias Meyers. A surprise to some that he’s on this postseason roster and not Mirs. Mirrors was left off. He was the rescue guy on Saturday night. But I think Tobias Meyer somehow finds himself into this game. Didn’t use the Miz. Miz could factor into that game. as well. I I Miz tonight did tonight did not pitch tonight. Feel like he’s ready to go for game two. We’ll see the Miz in game two, I’m sure. Depending how long Peralta got to get Peralta to the fifth or sixth inning. Got to get him to the fifth or sixth inning. Can’t be using six or seven pitchers every game. This is just going to destroy this team in the long run. This bullpen has already been taxed. Piecing these guys again, one after another after another and they’re doing their job. Be great if the Brewers busted out for a nine spot over the first two innings like game one against the Cubs, right? But the Brewers are going through a funk offensively at a bad time. At a bad time. But I see Brewer pessimism out there and I and I I know it was heavy in the air after the Brewers had lost those two in Chicago, but don’t give up on these guys just yet. These guys have been fighters all season long. But they got to come back. You have to win here at this ballpark tomorrow night. Not only does Baralta got to go out and give him one, the Mizen relief or Tobias Meyers, Urebe and McIll if they’re available. I would think they are. I hope they are, but got to start got to start getting some traffic on bases and move those guys in. Get them on, get them over, get them in. They’re getting guys on I mean, not tonight, but they’re hitting guys on base just stranding boatloads of runners on base in that Cub series tonight. Yeah, they only stranded three guys on base and that was the finish off the game because they couldn’t get anything started against Snell. All right, we come back, we’ll talk about the game two or the game two starters. Yamamoto Moto’s going for the Dodgers and I think the Brewers can get to him. I really do. I feel like they’re going to four runs in the last three games for this Milwaukee Brewers team. That is not good at all. I mean, the Brewers be getting blown out of their pitching staff. Did not hang hang in there like it is. All right, we’ll tell you about the game two starters and how I do feel good about Yamamoto Brewers hitting against him. They’ve already got a little history against him. We’ll talk about that coming up next year on Locked on Brewers. Locked on Brewers, part of Lockdown Podcast Network. We are your team everybody. By the way, if you see me swiping my hand around, it’s because there’s somehow there’s mosquitoes in the press box up here. I don’t know what what’s going on, but there’s mosquitoes in the press box. So, uh, this episode is also brought to you by FanDuel, America’s number one sports book. FanDuel, right now, new customers, bet five bucks and you’ll get $300 in bonus bets if you win. Right. Download the FanDuel app, get started, get the bonus of $300 if that first $5 bet wins. Check it out. download the app and take advantage of their terrific bonus on FanDuel. Down the stretch we come here on Lockdown Brewers. All you everydayers ran into a lot of you guys out here tonight at AFAM field. There’s something about being in this place in October for a night game. Walking around the ballpark. I try to walk around a little bit, grab some of the great food that we got here. And man, I ran into dozens of you guys who watch Lockdown Brewers every day all around the state. Couple of you guys go, “Yeah, I’m from Illinois, but I’m a Brewers fan.” More power to you. And throughout the playoffs, we’re going to be here daily talking Brewers baseball with you throughout the playoffs and into the World Series. This thing’s not ending anytime soon. I’m feeling good about the game, too, because Yamamoto on the hill. The Brewers crushed him back on July 7th. back on July 7th here. They tagged him for five runs on four hits and they got Roberts got him out of there. The Brewers just feasted on him. Yeah, he’s a strikeout pitcher making his third start here in the post inning postseason. 10 and two/3 11 Ks 10 hits regular season an RA of 2.49 12-8 record. Yeah, he’s good. See the Dodgers? This is what money buys you. You can have starting pitchers who are going to go five, six, seven innings. Brewers obviously don’t have that or that or they don’t trust in Canana to start a game. Obviously, they don’t trust Canana to start a game. They didn’t trust Priest to start this game tonight. No, they felt good of him coming in the second inning. You’re down Woodruff. The Brewers are basically down to one guy they trust, it seems. Freddy Peralta, who makes the start, his third postseason start. I told you uh in Chicago it was not good. Game one against the Cubs it was really good. He pitched into the sixth inning, struck out 10. In the postseason he’s gone nine and two/3s, five runs, seven hits. I like Freddy’s chances tomorrow and I like the Brewers chances of getting to Yamamoto. Yeah, Yamamoto’s got some vicious stuff out there, but the Brewers have tagged him already. They got some good numbers against him and I think the Brewers are going to come back and even this thing up going to Los Angeles coming up on Thursday. Yeah. Real quickly on the pitching when I said that Peralta is the only guy they they trust. Yeah, they won’t throw they won’t won’t throw Kintana in this series, right? They won’t use him at all. It seems Pster well after his last outing against the Cubs. I mean, they got him into the game in the second inning. Why isn’t Prier starting this game? I mean, Ashby did a nice job, but Ashby hasn’t been nothing special in the postseason. He walked Otani to start the game and then got the next three outs. But the Brewers are uh yeah, piecing things together with this pitching staff and doing great. The pitching staff is, but you’re not going to win any games on one hit over eight innings. And the Brewers have been good this year against good pitching, bad pitching. They’ve done it all. But now is not the time to score four runs in the last three games when offensively you’ve been just unbelievable. Unbelievable in the clutch. I thought they were going to come through against Trinan in the ninth inning and they didn’t do it. Especially Bryce Tang, our guy there, man. Take one off the leg. And then he swings that one out of the strike zone. frustrating in the gasp, the collect collective gasp here at Afanam Field. Man, these Brewer fans were charged up for a win tonight. Didn’t give much to cheer about tonight because they were feeble the Brewers were offensively. But I’m telling you, you don’t win on Tuesday night, it’s going to be very, very, very, very hard to win this series against the Dodgers. All right, that’s going to do it. Again, you get us on Google, Spotify, Apple, wherever you download your audio podcast. Please, when you go to those podcasts, there’s a a favorite on there. 1. The wall is an extension of the ground. The ball hitting the wall is equivalent to the ball hitting the ground. So it’s similar to the outfielder initially catching the ball, then bounced off his glove and hit the ground so it’s not a catch.

  2. Brewers had their chance with all their miracle defensive plays. That’s the only thing that saved them from the Dodgers piling on the runs. Unless Brewers plan on making all those miracle defensive plays all series long, there’s no way they’re winning the series.

  3. Shrinking violet YELI once again in the playoffs, absolute bum. Turang has to wear that pitch in that situation, the IQ should be able to overcome that reflex to jump away. This team is going to get absolutely dog walked

  4. Snake-bitten Brewers! When you come up with bags loaded in the 9th inning and tying run on 3rd you must THINK of getting that runner in anyway you can, including letting a wild pitch hit you! I feel bad for Turang who has been such a star but 2 big mistakes that he will have to live with! The only consolation is it wasn't the deciding game, yet!

  5. Brewers started winning when they moved Frelick to lead off and Turang to 6 or 7. Let Yelich play Left Field to see if that helps him lock in. DH one of the first basemen.

  6. To be honest you don’t want to show the dodgers the whole bullpen day one. You want to keep a couple in your pocket but now if your starting pitching doesn’t do well dodgers already have seen your bullpen. Good luck

  7. Think of the caliber of team the Brewers create, the type of players it takes. Now, realize why Snell makes $60 million more than Milwaukee's entire payroll. His sighing bonus was more than twice Yelly's main paper. THAT'S the kind of player it takes to beat us like that, but he's only one man. Brewers are a family.

  8. It looks like this will be a clean sweep by the baby mama dodging dodgers…..and not really surprising considering who they are…….it's simply a mismatch….

  9. We were at the game. Snell was good. 10+ K’s had the fans silent when dodger defense would hit the field. My big question is Why is Turang batting clean-up when he only had three hits last series. If Vaughn was up I feel this game would’ve gone differently. Preister should’ve stayed in too.

  10. The Dodgers had an extra day off? So what no excuse?.No excuse for ever leaving the bases loaded? Especially in a post season game in the bottom of the ninth when you should be able to blow the thing wide open. I'm a Brewers fan but they need to step the hell up that's about it? The hell with California, Los Angeles, and Hollywood. The hell with the Hype and The Dodgers. I'm from NY and we hate them. frankny

  11. That arrogant flying of the L flag was beyond childish and selfish. The Cubs nearly took that series. Brewers are DONE and that’s what they deserve after their classless lack of sportsmanship after a tough battle against the Cubs.
