The Golden State Warriors dropped their first game of the season with a surprise 119-139 defeat at the hands of the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday, Oct. 24. Golden State was playing on the second night of a back-to-back, having defeated the Denver Nuggets in overtime on Thursday.
Despite the heavy loss, Stephen Curry remained in an optimistic mood while speaking with the media after the game. He noted that the Warriors had ended the opening week of the new season with a 2-1 record, which he chose to take as a positive.
“Coach used to say win the week, which is the big deal,” Curry said. “And considering the schedule and back-to-back three and four nights to start. In three different cities. It was a really gutty win against Denver, professional win against LA, and gave a good swing tonight. So win the week. Keep doing that over the course of the year, you’ll be in good shape at the end. It’s tough when vibes are high and everybody’s feeling good.”
Golden State has a veteran core. Therefore, the locker room will understand the importance of remaining on an even keel throughout wins and losses, especially this early in the season, when building winning habits is more important than chasing seeding. As such, Curry’s comments about winning the week are an encouraging sign regarding the overall mindset of the current rotation.

The loss to Portland will undoubtedly hurt. But when you take a step back and see the hurdles Golden State has faced over the first three games, it becomes much easier to appreciate their two wins to start the season. Kerr’s team will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 27, when they face the Memphis Grizzlies.
