Islanders Make a Change at Goalie Coach | New York Islanders News

The Islanders made a change with their goalie coach. Just six games into the season. Pierro Greco, no longer the goalie coach. In comes Sergey Nuamovs who uh has come over and he was the AHL goalie coach for the past like year I would say and then now is elevated. He has worked with Ilia Sroken uh in Russia. That’s right. He was the the goalie coach for CSK in Moscow when Ilas Sroken was there where he put up like video game numbers. Um let’s just bring that up those video game numbers because it was let’s all remember exactly what Ilas Sroken looked like before coming over to the NHL. Of course different game obviously between the NHL and KHL but as I vamped for elite prospects to come up the final year before he came over 40 games 1.50 50 goals against average in a 935 safe percentage 73 966 in only four playoff games. The year before that I only go two years there. Uh 40 games 1.16 goals against average 940 save percentage in the regular season in 20 playoff games where I believe they won the Garen Cup. He had a 119 goals against average and a 947 save percentage. Just elite video game numbers. Ridiculous. Working on their noms. Absolutely. So, I think this is a move one when he came over from the KHL to just the Islander system. It felt like, okay, trying to make your number one goalie, you know, as comfortable as humanly possible. And, you know, Mitch K was here for a while and Piro Greco was here for a while and they did a lot of really good things for this team. like Piro Greco is not leaving on bad terms, but you know, you look at Ilia Sroken, he hasn’t posted those elite numbers that we saw his first three years in the league. Really any of the last three years. Um, and there some of it circumstantial, right? But an 873 and 390 goals against average in in five games this year and like the underlying numbers not great. Goal saved above expected. He’s 53rd in the NHL of 63 qualified goalies. So, uh, they’re paying this guy in Siroken a ton of money to be their number one goalie. We talked about on the last episode like I don’t really think there’s a world where you’re you’re trading him. They kind of have to bank on him figuring it out. And this kind of feels like a move to potentially help that. That’s what they’re hoping for, right? Like clearly they’re trying to make Ilia Siroken as comfortable as possible. Um they they did so by giving him the Iron Man helmet when Matthew Schaefer should have had it. Um but you not to say that he was bad. He was certainly good in that game and un not to say that he was undeserving but you Matthew Schaefer has his first multi-point game. You kind of want to give him that that kind of platitude. But they did instead the leadership group give it to Ilio Sroken to keep that confidence going which is why they played him against San Jose in the first place. Like he’s playing well. Yeah. It’s a team and our backup should be taking that, but you got to get your good goalie getting confident again and that’s the way to do it, man. So, they’re doing that. Then they they put um uh Sergey Namovs there. I’m not really sure what was the tipping scale here in terms of oh, we can’t have this anymore and this is why we’re making the change today. But I I guess they had to do it now. I I just the timing is kind of weird. Yeah, it’s uh it definitely is a little bit strange especially too because it was off a win. It’s not like like there were worse Ilia Sroken performances. This was honestly him coming off of arguably his best game of the season. Had a 917 save percentage, three goals against uh every other game he appeared in. He he was under 900 and gave up four goals in the other four appearances that he had this year. It is strange, right? Like we’re only what two weeks into the season if that and then they decide to pull the trigger. Like why not make that move before the start of the season? Yeah. And it’s not like it’s a surprise that Nomovs gets the job. Like that was the second he came over. I think we’re all surprised that he actually only ended up in the AHL. Why did you hire this guy to stuff him in the AHL? I don’t get it. Oh well, he’ll still be able to work with him. Like not dayto day, which is exactly what’s going to happen now. Um I I I can only assume is like he allowed three more goals or three goals, you know, against the San Jose Sharks. So like, okay, well, we got to we got to do something. We can’t have our franchise goalie being having a goals against average of almost four per game early season only five games in, but we can’t have that. I assume that’s it, but that’s just like you’re saying, it’s a weird line um to be drawing because, you know, maybe have a better defensive system in front of him and some of those issues might be, you know, might go away. Yeah. But I guess it’s easier to remove a goending coach, put someone in and, you know, hope that he gets his confidence back instead of changing a whole defensive scheme. So, are you That’s kind of where I wanted to go. Is this where you are? Um, like are you buying that this is going to be the thing that turns it around? I don’t know if I’m buying it. I’m hoping for it and I’m sure I’m sure everyone is, but I’m not I’m not saying like this is going to be it. Like he’s going to turn this around and he’s going to turn back to that guy that he was in as early as 2223 when he had a 924 and 234. I I don’t think that this is leash that like we say in French like boom this is what it’s going to happen because uh Sergey Nom is there is going to change everything. I don’t think so. He’s been around for like you said a year now so they could have just called him like hey what should I do differently? Oh Ilia likes this. Oh okay deal. I mean why not just do that? Yeah. No I hear you on that. And one of the biggest criticisms I think that you’ve brought up, which is a good one, is like the positioning seems off uh at times with Ilia Sroken and maybe someone that he’s more comfortable with and has worked with in the past, can kind of reel that in, right, and and get that back into a spot that you feel, you know, pretty good about. You’re right. That that’s a fair point to bring up. Like you got a guy who knows how to get Ilia Sroken or should know how to get Ilia Sroken back to basics, right? back to those video game what he did right when he was doing those video game numbers of the KHL. Again, different game, different ice sheet, but the fundamentals to how he approaches stopping a shot is relatively the same, at least base position wise. And that’s the thing we’re talking about fundamentals here, the absolute foundational aspects of his position. Maybe Sergey Namos can help him with that. And just like have your feet placed like this. Remember, this is how you want to, you know, push off this way instead of that way. have the the the toe inside the post instead of outside the post type of thing. I don’t know. Uh reverse RVR type of thing instead of just an RVR like this very technical side of things. Maybe that’s where he does it. I I I can only assume.

  1. As a new GM you want your coaches in there. That was the last assistant coach left and Darche probably didn’t want to upset the one player that was consistent (IS)
The weak start to the season gave Darche all he needed to bring in someone new.

All sports are mental & hockey goalies are at the top of the list. This change-up may be all thats needed to reset Sorokin.

  2. Listen, this change was a logical decision. Grecco hasn't mixed well with Sorokin. Bringing in a guy who knows IS and has gotten results was the obvious move. I'm glad Darche acted NOW instead of allowing this to ruin the season. LL would've let this tank the season because 1) they're friends. 2) This version of LL would've made this move at the end of the season, and everyone (stupidly) would blame Sorokin for a terrible season.
The timing and replacement is Good decision making by Darche. We're on the right path for the 1st time in DECADES, lets all show a little patience and excitement, this is what we've all been begging for! LGI BOYS!!

  3. I expect that this was decided last week after the Ottawa game. Roy knew that Rittich was gonna play thursday. He announced it. My guess is that they wait for the tuesday game to end so Sorokin has a few days between starts to process.
