How Do You Feel About The Current Maple Leafs Lineup? | SDP

Like it’s tough, Cowan. It’s hard to know. Like because they always do that, right? The players are going to tell us. They’re going to tell us over the next few games. Like it’s not I don’t think it’s a guarantee it’s Cowan. It It could honestly be Doy. Mhm. Could be Yarn Croak. I doubt it cuz Dom is right now in the Lton spot. Yes, he is. And that should make him very uncomfortable. $3.75 million. This is year what? Two of four. O I think uh um I think it’s interesting to imagine a guy like Chino. By the way, I I don’t know why I said he had 23 goals once. The most he’s ever had is 16. He had 29 points two seasons ago. But this guy is That’s also not 23. That’s not No, I don’t know where I got that number from. I looked at it last night and I have no idea. Anyway, uh the guy is a former first round pick. 2020 draft. Weird draft, but you know, he was a reach of a pick. He was the story of uh of uh he was one of the big stories of that night. He’s 6 foot one, 203 pounds and has played one game this season. Wow. So like I guess the Leafs offered Robertson for him this summer and if the Blue Jackets would do that I think they would have done it. Um I am curious about that guy. Um, and Lucas Reichel’s name has also come up from Chicago because even dating back to when Luke Richardson was a coach, and that’s a that’s a higher round draft pick, too, from what I can remember. Um, that’s a guy they had big expectations for and it just hasn’t worked out. And I, you know, I I I think the Leafs clearly this summer said, “We got to take some bets. Machelli, Joshua, two of them, right?” Yeah. But, you know, and Chinov would be a third one. M and and just on Chinov, uh Elliot reported in his 32 thoughts that they offered Robertson for Chinov and they turned that down. So, we know that the deal has to be Robertson plus something or a better player than Robertson. And at that point, I probably wouldn’t do that deal. Why would you offer more than Robertson for a guy that isn’t playing? So, I don’t I don’t know if that’s going to go anywhere. And if Columbus says we want less or we’ll go back to that deal. So, I’m not doing that deal for him. So, I don’t think he’s going to be a Leaf if I’m not mistaken. Unless the Leafs um like unless this deal involves more than just those two players like Columbus would have to retain. He makes more than Robertson and the Leafs are up against it right now because of all the injuries. He makes 2.1. Robertson’s 1 eight flat. Mhm. Yeah. No, that’s that doesn’t matter. Yeah. So, I don’t Columbus is weird and I don’t want to do that. Lucas Riel, 6 feet tall, 170 lbs. A little bit smaller in terms of size. Sure. uh 23 years old went four or five picks ahead of Chinoikov in that 2020 draft. He was the 17th overall pick. He has four points in five games, but it seems like there may not be a fifth there if in Chicago. They don’t need someone who gets four points in five. I thought they did. I found it. It was Fridge that brought it up, man. It wasn’t me. I’m not pulling it out of thin air because he’s I know Blackhawks fans have been frustrated with him for a few years now. Yeah. Um and maybe this is the perfect time to trade him because he’s playing well. Um, that’s another tough one. Like, unless you’re willing to take big swings, it’s hard to make your team better and the Leafs don’t have the draft capital to to go out and make pure buys. They can’t be swingers is what you’re saying. They can’t be swinging. Absolutely, Adam. No, you got to go out there and make a hockey trade. Interesting. I uh like from what I’ve seen from Lucas, right? Again, most of what I saw from him was when Luke Richardson was still coaching and also the team has been dog [ __ ] so it’s sort of hard to evaluate. I’m not watchable now. They are watchable. They They look great. Um Nazar’s on a tear. It’s great. They’re not depressing. Um somebody offered me before the season started Frank Nazar for Evan Bousard. And I was like, are you [ __ ] nuts? And then I should have taken Damn, you’re getting your ass kicked. I should have taken that deal. That’s crazy. No, you definitely shouldn’t. I know. You definitely shouldn’t. I don’t know what’s going on with Bushard. Yeah, but I just I I’m curious about like the Leafs. They the way it was described to me is Brad Tring is the tire kicker chief. Yes. He will kick tires on everyone. He’s one of the rare GMs that literally calls other GMs. What do you do all day? Brad makes phone calls. Yes. So, and Keith Py said mere weeks ago that he’s got uh he’s got the ability to make any trade he needs in order to keep this window open and in order to go for it. I’m just not seeing what the Leafs can really offer another team other than Eastn Count. Uh yeah. No. And you’re not doing that. I think they like him too much. Yeah. Um and like Danford I think is going to have a long NHL career. I just don’t think he has tremendous value, right? Like what are you really going to get there? Like what what would he tops out as a maybe a top four guy, but a dependable bottom pairing guy. Like what would if you were to trade him right this minute would his draft capital be like if he were a draft pick if you could convert him like currency what a second round pick no you got to get on the phone and you have players great news you have players right you got Max doi you do have Kelly Yarnro you have Nick Roberts son. Um, they’re all NHL players. I just un unfortunately you’re going to have to try to find players who don’t work with their team and might work with yours and you got to convince that team that what you’re offering them makes sense for them. So, here’s a bigger swing idea. It was rumored that the Leafs were in on JJ Purka this summer and that part of that offer was Brandon Carlo. Oh boy. Wow. I Wow, did I hate that at the time. Wow. Am I open to it now? Um, boy. You’re not getting purka now. Well, no. No, you’re not. Somebody else. No, no, no, no. Sorry, sorry. It’s No, no, no, no. I would have done Purka for Carlo. Um, well, that wasn’t It wasn’t a straightup swap. I want to be clear. Like, there would have been more a part of it. What I hated was No, you just got him. You just got him. He’s been a good fit. He made Riley better. You paid a fortune for him. A first and Mitten. [ __ ] And now you’re getting rid of him for what? And boy, after the last two games, I’m like, you know what? Pack your [ __ ] Like I I’m so disappointed. I’m so like there’s still time to turn it around. There is. And And he can start by beating the [ __ ] out of someone on the on the Sabres. Once more teams are um disappointed or sure in their direction or whatever, more players would become available. Jesse, you know, we talked a lot in the season preview about the steadying effect that Brandon Carlo had on Morgan Riley’s game. You when you trade a Brandon Carlo, despite his lack of toughness so far this season, we all agree on that, which is pathetic. Um, do you then open up another problem with Morgan Riley again because now you’re going to put him with Philip Myers and he’s going to play like he did last year. Playing whack-a-ole. I think when you start doing these things, you realize there’s a lot of question marks on the Leafs. I don’t think they’re holes just yet where you say like these are deficiencies in the lineup, but when you start moving things around, you question about like, okay, so you remove Carlo, how’s Morgan Riley’s game going to hold up? And that’s a huge thing about this team where if he’s tasked with playing number one defenseman minutes, you got to be sure that he’s going to play like a number one defenseman. You can’t have that as a giant question mark. And unfortunately, it still is at this point in his career. Like this is supposed to be the Morgan Riley resurgence season. And it started off right. First two games probably MVP and then the next what four or five it’s been just steady same kind of Morgan. So, there’s a lot of work to be done with this roster. You You can’t be too reactionary cuz I’m super down on Carlo right now, but like Boston is retaining on him and like he’s not at an irresponsible number. He has to be better. Oh, yeah. He has to be better. There’s a lot of guys in this roster who have to be better. Plain and simple.

  1. This team is rotten to the core. Even a Cup winning tough-as-nails army sargeant can't get them into the fight. What hope is there? Pull a Sharks/Chicago and start again from scratch.

  2. You can’t play a significant number of games without your top defensemen.

The longer Reilly & Tanev can’t play the more they’re staring down the basement stairs.

  3. There is definitely locker room drama going on. No clear leader. And when someone said something to that effect(stolarz), it got the tenured players panties in a bigger knot then usual. There lack of attention to details is so sad and hard to watch. 2nd line been okay but is going to be out for a little bit now with Willy injured.

Matthews needs to lose the C. He is emotionless, and seems to take the No Guts, No Grind, part a little to literally. But we do not have anyone to replace him really. So Tre is handcuffed by major pieces just like the last GMs and coaches.

  4. What team can sustain the loss of a versatile 100pt winger that runs pp and pk? Auston looks lost. 34 can't drive a line himself. Cant carry the puck. Needs a guy to set him up. That guy is gone, and it shows. Face it.

  5. Heres my rant for the last year. Mathews shoulda been traded. Not marner. Mathews is a 2nd line player ALL DAY! Without marner…his reality is utterly exposed. he is a soft, uninspired, zero grit player. The kind if player that does NOT deserve 13 mill a year nor the C.
Leafs better wake up or this is gonna be a looong season… and a other short playoff.
Bring in the young guns with something to prove. Let them play ffs and get rid of the bottom 4 deadwood. Cowan Danforth et al.

  6. No offense to women's hockey but the only DNA change this club has done was to remove the Y Chromosome.
Somebody ask Matthews what his pronouns are now. 😲

  7. Even if the Leafs wanted to go after someone like Seamus Casey, what do they really have to offer in trade. They gave up futures and picks for nothing, and dont have many options for player for player trades or prospects

  8. Feels a lot like the post lockout 2010s. Wasting time and resources trying to scrape a playoff appearance together instead of just cashing in while the assets are still room temp.

  9. I’m sorry but why are we keeping Cowan and Danford when Florida and Tampa traded all their prospects like those guys to win cups, and I would never trade Carlo for Peterka because Carlo is a Defensive Dawg in the playoffs

  10. The thing that sucks for the leafs is they paid a 1st for Laughton along with Minten and a 1st for Carlo, so if they chase Tuch then Buffalo will definitely ask for a 1st, and Dubas in Pittsburgh would definitely ask for a 1st for Rakell

  11. still refuses to put domi with matthews for any amoutn of time. jfc. this team is just built like crap. the d is horrendously slow, cant make a pass to save their lives and get hemmed in their own zone for long stretches

  12. Guys no one wants Robertson. The Leafs have been trying to trade him for over 2 years.
The Leafs do not have the assets to make a big trade. The players with value all have NMCs and past history demonstrates the possibility of players' waiving their NMCs.

  13. the the lines are a mess. Berube over thinking everything. all they needed was a top 6 and a top 4 d and they went ahead and got these average players. too much wasted cap space sitting and in the AHL.. Thrum. a million? Kampf in minors. Cowen should not be playing as well.

  14. 0:05 As a Habs fan, just looking at the rosters on paper… Montreal literally ended up with the better team.
It’s crazy (and honestly kinda sad) how fast Toronto managed to undo everything they had built

  15. The Carlo trade in the summer only made sense if Ekblad was hitting FA imo. If you traded Cowan and Carlo for Peterka and signed Ekblad, gave Rielly another look with Tanev it would've been a Treliving masterclass. It's fine we move on though. Currently, if Nylander is out for a long period of time throw him on LTIR, same with Mo, if Auston get's injured throw him there too. Tank, tank, tank if this team is mediocre come January. I don't even think that's a bold take, our 2026 pick is top 5 protected. There is a franchise player in the draft, if not him Keaton Verhoeff looks special too. We cannot lose another top 10 pick to Boston, sell at the deadline. Re-tool, monitor Necas, draft in the top 5. Everyone realistically knew 2026 was going to be a down year, we knew we weren't going to be in cup contention this year, that's all good and fine BUT if we sacrifice this season we could potentially buy ourselves 10 more years of contention.

  16. I like Cowan but he is still young. He is waivers exempt so the Leafs can slowly ease him into the NHL. Robertson has had his chance. Time to send him down. Maccelli has also had his chance. He is too slow for the NHL. Bring up Experience. Blais. Pezzetta and Boyd.

  17. Was able to watch this live in the states because it was on Hulu😎 tough L but good to see papi get that pp goal. Feels like we have 1 1/2 lines, a bunch of 4th liners, and mid ass defensemen…. Sabres jerseys are sick by the way
