New York #Jets DROP To 0-7 vs. #Panthers REACTION (FULL BADLANDS)
What’s up everybody? Welcome back to your favorite New York Jets subscription podcast, Badlands. I’m your host, Joe Caparoso, joined as always by Connor Rogers. Seven weeks, seven games, seven postgame therapies. The New York Jets lost yet again at home, 13-6 to the Carolina Panthers. Another game with no touchdowns, another onepossession loss, and no shortage of things to talk and complain about. Connor, how you doing? How you feeling? 0 and seven. This is the second time in our lives we’ve been talking about an 0 and7 team in 5 years, which is insane. I know. I’ve been trying to unpack the differences and similarities and it’s very hard because it’s that feels like 10 years ago, not not five years ago or whatever it was. That’s what’s weird about it. I guess they all start to blend together when you lose this many games in a row. I I guess I mean the difference off the top is this is a new regime. And when you’re, you know, watching a new regime, all you’re looking for is a few positives here and there. You you don’t, it’s not beaten into you, you’re not worn out where you’re just constantly fatigued by the negatives. And unlike I’ve ever seen before, this is a new regime where I think all of us are fatigued by the constant negatives. That’s how many there have been in such a short span of time. So, it’s tough, man. Like, there’s no way around it. Watching New York Jets football is just a brutal exercise at this point. There are so many issues with the organization that you can’t sit here and just it’s the coaching’s fault, it’s the talent fault, it’s the actual infrastructure of the organization. Like when you’re this bad, there’s a good chance that it’s everything. And I I cannot even explain to you how disappointed I am that we’re right back here. Yeah. It feels like when you’re this bad, every week someone gets a new turn in the spotlight to get blamed for the loss. And you know, I said this on Twitter, last week felt like a Glenn loss. Tampa kind of felt like a Wilks loss. This felt like a Muji loss just because it was really really amplified with the absence of Garrett Wilson. And we we spent a lot of time talking about Michael Clemens and Tony Adams and not as much time uh about the Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson of it all in the receiver position, but the kind of thing that you and I and many other people talked about in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, that god forbid if Garrett Wilson misses a few games, which he was inevitably going to do at some point, you were going to be trotting out an uncompetitive situation at receiver. And that’s exactly what happened today. This game was again there to be one because the defense has brought it the last two weeks to their credit to have some positives. And the reality is you’re going to Josh Reynolds against one of the best quarterbacks in the league one-on-one. And he is never going to win that matchup. And that’s not fair to him and it’s not even fair to Tyrod Taylor. And I know he under he underthrew some of these passes, but when he’s dropping back, where are you going with the football? And I I just found my anger most acutely to the laziness of just restructuring Lazard and just slapping him on the roster with the effort you saw from him in the last two years and watching him going out still out there getting illegal shift and illegal motion penalties, not coming back to the football and a beautifully designed trick play that was a bad throw by Tyrod, but come back to the football, draw pass interference and high point it. And it’s just it’s a such an avoidable mistake. And I’m not going to go over the top and pick on Arian Smith. He’s a rookie. They they they’ve given him the reps that they should. But go high point the football and score a touchdown. And this is kind of what we talked about. You got a guy in the fourth round who has a ripe opportunity for expanded playing times. Played a lot of football in seven games. He has 15 total offensive yards in seven games because he’s a seventh round talent being asked to be a third or fourth rounder and playing that level of rep. So, you just didn’t give yourself a chance. And it’s it’s not fair in this circumstance of the defense the last two weeks. You allow 13 points in the NFL to, you know, you watch Denver today, they scored 33 points in the fourth quarter. They scored 13 points against the Jets. Carolina scored 30 points against Dallas last week. They scored 13 points today. You allow 13 points, you should be able to win. The Jets, this is as bad as the offense has ever been. And I’ve watched the Zach Wilson offense. I’ve watched Adam Gase years. If you take week one out of the equation, which is going to be looked back on as one of the most ridiculous anomalies ever, the Jets have one non-garbage time touchdown this season. And it was a broken play scramble on fourth down. They have like no normal touchdowns since week one. I don’t know how else to describe it. Like not garbage time like not just like their starting running back has zero touchdowns and looks just so this is just looks so over between Bree Hall and the Jets on all sides. just feels so done. Their starting tight end doesn’t have any touchdowns. No, Reynolds has no touchdowns. It’s just it feels truly hopeless on offense and I just don’t know what the plan even was on offense today, right? Like it it’s why we reacted so harshly to Glenn like snapping at cause last week because it was such a fair question and then you end up benching Fields two quarters later anyway. And I think again, if you bench Fields last week at halftime and you give Tyrod all the starters reps this week, you probably win these two games. But now you left both of them on the table because Tyrod has to come in cold at halftime after you wasted a half with Fields who looks as mentally cooked as Zach looked in 2022. And y I’m all for, you know, people have in their own faith and you talk about whatever helps you through dayto-day, but you’re the starting quarterback of the Jets. So, when people ask you a question why you can’t complete a pass, you can’t talk about God for three minutes. You got to actually answer football questions. And this situation, shockingly, kind of feels like it’s ran its course already. I I don’t know how you credibly go into that locker room and roll that guy out when he’s throwing for 20 yards, a half, and just looks completely lost. You say what you will about Tyrod and his arm strength falling off a little bit. You can run an NFL offense a little bit with him. So for me, all my angst is kind of focused on the offense and sort of the anger around hanging the situation out to dry when it didn’t have to be this bad. I get not overinvesting in certain things, but it’s just it’s ridiculous to be not be able to score touchdowns. I I it’s just it’s not how today’s NFL works. To just zero touchdowns and not even really get remotely close at all that it’s just baffling to watch. Well, I think what also makes it worse is you look at how the Panthers have played in their three road games before this. They were abysmal. You look at the way the Giants scored today against Denver. I mean, Denver was allowing broken play after broken play. And then even it’s like Daniel Bellinger. Yeah. And then even the final touchdown the Giants got on the f their their final drive before they lost. Say what you want because I thought the officiating was a horrendous joke. The Giants were taking chances. Yeah. On the field, man. You have a higher chance of drawing those flags in today’s game. When you take those chances, it’s going to lead to a higher chance of DPI. It’s going to lead to a higher chance of roughing the passer. Guys are going to get grabby. The Jets. And so that’s the thing. You can’t have it both ways. I can’t sit here last week and say, “How could Fields not just get the ball out? He just turdled and took a sack after sack after sack and then get on this mic and get on Tyrod for throwing interceptions today. Tyrod and I’m sure the tape is going to tell this story and I just checked it’s not uploaded yet but from what I watched on the broadcast today or from I watch every snap is that the Panthers had such little respect for the Jets passcatching options. They would blitz play man coverage. Tyrod has to throw the ball if they blitz and they’re playing man coverage. Nobody gets a step on anyone. And that’s not Tyrod’s fault. That’s better than taking a sack. Yeah. So, this this had nothing to do with Tyrod underperforming today. I to It’s funny. You and I had not even spoken really about the game until we turned the mics on on purpose. Most of the time we do that. We had the same exact conclusion. I watched this game and maybe for the first time this year, for a whole game, not for a drive or a quarter or a half, I was like, “Oh, today it feels like the Jets really don’t have a lot of talent.” It kind of felt like that. There was so many bad decisions over the first six games by Glenn. There was disappointing performances, whatever you want to call it. Today, I sat there and I was like, they’re just not very good as a team right now. And the fact that a Garrett Wilson injury and a Quincy Williams injury and what key ones am I really missing at this point? Like I don’t count Michael Carter because Brownley has been fine. You don’t worry about Brownley. I mean, we’re not counting ABT because that that was so long ago. You have to adjust by that. And the line is is fine talent-wise. That’s not the issue. They have no talent at wide receiver with Garrett Hurt. They really today what was tough was Germaine and Will McDonald did not get after the quarterback today from watching the broadcast. I’ll watch back the tape. But I thought Quinnon and Harrison Phillips were an absolute wall in the middle of like they you can’t really run at those guys. They played their ass off. But this is what separates NFL GMs and guys that get fired is that when you have an injury, do you look like 75% of yourself or do you look like 10% of yourself? And I don’t care that they’re rookies cuz that’s the choice you made. Yeah. Kiko, who I felt like played the run pretty well last week, Kiko was Kiko can’t be on the field when the team throws. Like it’s that’s what it looks like. He can’t. He’s a true one-dimensional player. He’s a 19 pass happy league middle linebacker, right? And you could take that guy and let him play special teams and be a goal line package kind of backer and maybe for a game or two he doesn’t get exposed. The way teams throw when he’s on and I’m not just singling him out. There’s a lot of problems right now with the team. But Cle, I’m not going to do the Clemens thing every week. Clemens is terrible. What do you want me to say? He’s and teams very purposefully just keep running right at him and booting. Yeah, he can’t contain. He has no sideline speed. He’s not even really an a real edge defender. I I mean it’s just they are so deficient in terms of the amount of typical NFL talent. And that is this isn’t the kind of talent where a lot of people get mad when you come at a GM that’s had one off season. And I’m not talking about when you have one off seasonason, like what you should get grace for is well, there’s not a lot of high-end talent because you’ve had one draft, you’ve had one free agency, which by the way, the Jets got zero high-end talent from this free agency. We like Meu and Mason Taylor. Y what you can criticize a first offseason GM for is because it’s it’s probably the easiest thing to criticize is when they get there, the combo I I had many weeks ago on the show is they typically don’t like the roster. When a guy’s like a 50-50 guy, for them the 50% is like the coin flip is like I’m just going to move on from him. That’s what they’ve done with Carter by acquiring Brownley. That’s what they did by some of their own guys by getting Briggs and Harrison Phillips. Yeah. He has failed the depth of the roster by almost every move he’s made. Like you chose your veteran wide receivers to be Josh Reynolds and and Tyler Johnson. When you chose that, you need to do better than what Aren Smith is in the fourth round. You chose to go into the year with Michael Clemens as your third edge. So, you need to do better than Tyler Baron, who you traded up in the fifth round to get for. Yeah. You have Quincy Williams and you paid Sherwood, but your backup linebacker linebackers get hurt in this league. It’s a physical league, is Kiko. So, just on and on. Like, these are Muji problems. He does not look ready for prime time to be controlling an NFL roster. And I think I deserve enough uh benefit of the doubt as somebody who I’m the last guy to just kill the GM right away because I know how hard that job is from having contacts in the league and how unfair guys could be painted a picture after one off season. But he he does not look ready. I think anybody in the scouting circles and in the personnel circles of the league would agree with this take. Like they look overwhelmed. And that’s not to defend Glenn and Wilks and the team as a whole, but the personnel decisions that have transitioned from last year’s roster to this one feel like an 85% plus miss rate. Like after Meu and Mason Taylor, Joe and maybe a little bit of Malachi Moore and the three trades they made, which aren’t, you know, like earthshattering moves. Yeah. What What is there from one You found a punter, right? It’s a good punter. That’s about this is like bad. This is what had to happen. It feels like through seven games, both Glenn and Muji have taken turns learning on the job at a ridiculously steep curve. And their presumed veteran counterbalances in the org just haven’t been enough. Right. For Glenn, that was supposed to be Wilks and he’s had his own problems even though it’s stabilized a little bit the last two weeks. For Mushuji supposed to be Spielman, but how engaged is he really dayto-day? It’s like it’s not it’s not built out enough yet and like there’s not enough of an infrastructure around him. There’s still a mix of some holdovers and that’s not an excuse at this point because you’re rolling out the product that you’re rolling out and you get yourself stuck in a situation like this where you have 10,000 people in the stadium on a beautiful day and with with good reason because you’re not only bad, you’re not entertaining, you’re not scoring touchdowns like when the rest of the league is just find like Jacobe Brassette comes in off the bench for the Cardinals. They score 20 or 30 points every week. They lose, but they’re scoring points and touchdowns with Michael Carter and Bam Knight at running back and Greg Dor at receiver. Like it’s just teams find a way to do this and like again we we always ask like try the trick play. They try the trick play but you have an empty jersey out there in Lazard so you don’t get it done and you know Tyrody took his shots. It’s just you feel a little helpless when it’s like JC Horn on Josh Reynolds. It’s a ridiculous mismatch. It’s like comical. And for all of that, it’s 13 to6 and you you’re kind of in the game still, which is what makes it even more frustrating because you feel like, are they really that far away from just being a normal bad two and five team? But what’s what’s jarring to me, and I I get it because I’m watching all these games multiple times, is to lose the majority of the fan base this quickly, and to already be at game seven where we hear so much discourse now that actually we want them to lose out because we want a better draft pick and we want these guys to get fired. Usually that’s like 5 to 15% of the fan base. That feels like 35 to 40% of the fan base right now. each week. Growing each week, which is shocking after seven games, especially with the goodwill theoretically that Aaron Glad came in here with and the easy act to follow that Darren Mui should have had because Joe Douglas was given a 100 games and didn’t win anything and he let yes, he left plenty of a mess behind. It’s it’s amazing to burn through that much goodwill. It’s just that the Jets have played such a bingo card of losing, right? They’ve been humiliated uh in blowouts. They’ve lost close games in like weird ways. They’ve been impossibly boring and not scoring touchdowns for this extended stretch. And quarterback is just sort of this like hless mess now where either you’re rolling out an old backup who has his moments but is probably going to get hurt sooner rather than later. And Fields, it feels like he can’t play as a starting quarterback anymore in the NFL. And like every Jet season, it feels like we’re going to end up with three quarterbacks playing. I’m sure at some point we’re going to end up seeing Brady Cook this season at the rate they’re going. You’re 0 and 11, 0 and 12. Like it’s going to be why not? And I don’t know how much longer you’re going to be ping ponging between Fields and Tyrod. So, you know, it’s dark for this regime right now. I still Yeah. And you asked me today, are they going to be back for year two? Yes. But what where I think you’re at now is that the range of outcomes for this team, I think, is between 0 and 17 and two and 15. So, in that range, you’re pick you’re picking in the top three, I would say, right? I I don’t think they’re going to be able to win enough to like pick seventh, right? They’re going to be picking in the top three. I would agree with you. They’re going to be picking a quarterback unless something bizarre happens. And because of that reality, this one and done thing will be a conversation all the way up through January. Fair or unfair, ridiculous or not ridiculous. I still think 7525 they’re back. 8020 they’re back. Honestly, uh I don’t I just But I I don’t know. It looks that bad, man. Like it I mean, look, you go to be fair, you go 0 and 17, you go 1 and 16, and you’re picking first or second. And what that means, like it it’s a real thing, which again, I I don’t want to be ever reactionary after seven games, but when you feel it, you feel it. And I I see the discourse in our Discord. I see it on Twitter. I talk to fans in person. I I just there is no patience or tolerance for this product right now. And I I I get it because you just watch today and it’s like I can’t even like get mad about the way the broadcast team is like poking at the Jets. I’m like this is this is like an uncompetitive mess in the first half on offense. There’s just there’s just no plan and this sort of like funky hopeless malaise over the unit and you got a little bit in the second half but like it shouldn’t be this bad and it shouldn’t be this hard. right? Where where do you pivot from here? And is it I mean, what percentage do you think it’s at now that we’re talking about one and done? I mean, that is like a that’s a massive decision to make. And I’m not saying it’s the wrong decision. Like, you can make a very fair argument for it, but where’s your headsp space on that now? Because look, this team very well could be 0 and8 at the buy and then you get through that Cleveland game, who kicked the [ __ ] out of Miami today, by the way. Like, there’s not a lot of quote unquote wins on the schedule. I mean, it’s the NFL, so you know, any any kind of given Sunday, but the the Jets shouldn’t be favored in another game, honestly. Why Why would the Jets be favored over the Browns? Why would they be favored over the Saints? Maybe Miami late in the year. That’s a good one because it feels like they’re going to get fired and they’re going to be playing I mean, they could be starting Quinners. Yeah. So, yes, Miami. That’s a good one. But still, I I think that I mean, my odds right now, yeah, I would say 7030, which is ridiculous. That’s ridiculous. After seven games, that’s I mean, I’ll tell you what makes up the 70. One, and this is inexcusable that this is a thing, but it’s a thing. Is the money. Yep. Is the fact that they have long-term contracts to both Glenn and Muji. That should be inexcusable. Here’s a little fun fact for everyone that everyone knows. Coaches salaries and jam salaries don’t count against the salary cap. So I don’t give a [ __ ] that the I think they have the cash to burn. The billionaire owners have to pay off these kinds of contracts. That’s the sport. You know what? You make it back after like five beers at Metife. By the way, I bought some when I went and saw Oasis. I know what they cost. [ __ ] ridiculous. But besides that, um yeah, I think that that makes up part of the 70. the fact that they do have an internal fear of hitting the reset button too quickly. Like Belich’s whole quote of what was it? Um it was uh like load, shoot, aim. Yeah. He said about Woody, which I thought was I I mean I don’t I didn’t know if that was totally fair. I think I I don’t think that’s kind of how it works. I think that just you know he’s he’s made bad decisions, but I don’t think it’s just like firing from the hip. I think they actually unfort like shout out to the 33rd team and their 114 interviews in the process. Sadly like they these are calculated decisions. They’re just bad ones. It’s not like they just like put a bunch of things in a hat and take one out. They they probably paid the 33rd team a ton of money for this search. That’s probably part of it too is that I’m sure they still touch base with the 33rd team and you’re going to have a 33rd team that is going to be trying to convince them. Uh, you would think I’m guessing. I don’t know this for sure. Also, do you get the move on because that’s embarrassing. Yeah. Also, do you get the who comes here after they saw someone got fired after which is I think the dumbest thing ever because if you have the number one overall pick that’s and you have a roster that like a lot of the cap bloat isn’t going to be ridiculous. You’re not waiting for five years of Aaron Rodgers deal. you know, even some of Joe Douglas’s sins of void years will start to kind of wash away. Yeah. So, yeah. Okay. Maybe that, you know, say like a John Harbaugh got fired. Maybe he wouldn’t want to come here, but it’s not that you can’t find somebody decent to take the job. You just got to identify that candidate. I mean, the do people remember what the state of the Rams when Shawn McVey went there? I’d like people to think about these things sometimes. So, I think that there Yeah, there’s a lot of reasons. Um, the money is a big one, but also the the fear of the reputation of blowing it up. The 33rd team influence, you know, Aaron Glenn and Woody, I think, are pretty close. And I think that, you know, Robert Craft had to make a tough decision in a very, very similar light with Gerard Mayo. Now, why it’s 30%. That’s a big number for me to put out there. Yeah, like I I like I’m at the point in my life where when I say these things, I actually like really have to think about it because it’s not just the people that I make mad when I say these things, but like I hope that I hold some weight with the fan base. 30% to me is what he has been understandably so obsessed with landing a franchise quarterback. If he starts to hear the like number one, not here, he’s watching his own product. He knows the odds of them actually utilizing this future top three pick and developing the quarterback the right way. If he doesn’t trust the guys that are in charge of it, then he has to he has to move on. This is his obsession. I’ve always said Woody’s obsession is two things. One, having a franchise quarterback. Two, hosting a playoff game. Like those are the two things I’ll tell you right now he cares about the most. So if you have an opportunity again and especially watching Sam Darnold right now where you sit there and you’re like well technically those guys took the right guy at three. We just had a horrible infrastructure form from the GM’s decisions with the roster to the coaching to all these things. You can’t repeat that again. You cannot repeat that again. So I think that’s part of it. I think the second part of it is like we’re at the point where this is embarrassing, right? I I always say there’s a difference and you always identify this as well. There is a difference of being bad in professional sports and being an embarrassment. The last thing the Jets had could have been this year is embarrassing. They’re they were coming off an era where there was a lot of public back and forth between Aaron Rogers and the organization. That experiment blew up in their face. You know, some of it their fault, own fault, some of it not their fault. Like the health situation was horrible luck. And I I mean, yeah, when it comes down to it, I don’t know, man. It just feels like this is boiling up right now. I mean, they feel like a meme. They feel like a meme. You’re a meme. And Glenn Glenn was Glenn didn’t have a lot at the podium today. Like, it was the first time I’ve seen him like usually, you know, he’s defensive almost to the point of where it’s annoying. Yeah. But today it was just like he kind of looked like a guy that’s out of answers. Even the decisions in the game. It was kind of like he was spinning a wheel. It’s like I should go for it on fourth down to start the game, but then I’m going to punt it at the end of the game and never get the ball back. He He just can’t He can’t press the right button right now. Like that that kind of situation. I almost feel bad because, you know, that’s that’s a tough one. But yeah. Yeah, dude. I I think that I if they don’t win a game, how do you bring how do you bring them back, Joe? I know. You just can’t. You’re right. If you’re 0 and 17, which is historic, that’s different. That’s that’s even worse than Rich Kotite, right? Even he won a game. Also, Woody’s cognizant and the organization is cognizant of, you know, the Giants lost in embarrassing fashion today, but they’re fun and they’re entertaining and they have two young guys that their fan base is excited about and they’ll be on a coaching search next year most likely and doing that whole thing. The Patriots are good again and they’re probably going to kick the [ __ ] out of the Jets on Thursday Night Football and the organization is going to be very mindful of that. And the Jets again, they’re not they’re not just like the Raiders or the Titans or the Saints. They are the only team without a win. They have lost in like weird embarrassing fashion. They’re putting together like historic offensive incompetence where they’re just like the only team in the league who cannot score touchdowns. So that continues and like they’re some of these losses haven’t been that bad, right? They lost 1311. They lost 13 to6. They lost late to Tampa. They lost late to the Steelers. There’s going to be a couple other like Dallas Miami type games in here. I don’t know if it’s going to be against Cincinnati and Cleveland, although next week they’re probably no sauce, no Garrett. Bad timing on that going against the Bengals, coming off how they looked against the Steelers. You know, you lose that game to Joe Flacco. You come off a bye-week, you lose to Dylan Gabriel and the Browns. Then it’s like, come on, man. [ __ ] Like, we got to play the Pats in prime time. We got to play the Ravens with Lamar. You got to play the Falcons who are going to run all over you. Like, you lose to like these there is a world here where it just snowballs and snowballs and snowballs. And I don’t know who is stopping like the flood of incompetence right now. I think again defensively and special teams wise they’re stabilizing a little bit. They look professional. They’re trying. They’re flying around a little bit. Even guys we’ve been hard on like Stevens are are playing okay, right? They’re not like a joke out there. Offensively, if they could commit to the service academy identity, we’ve seen signs of them being able to really run the ball. It just looks like Bree isn’t all there. You know, Davis is fine, but it’s like, is he ready to real be a bellcow? And they don’t have another running back if and when they trade Breeze because Brilen Allen’s hurt. Juan Woo has made a glass. He’s hurt again. They don’t have another running back. So, you can’t run 55 times a game with one running back who’s been the third stringer his whole career. I It’s just tough. I don’t know. Like even if Tyrod starts and plays the rest of the way, you’re counting on him to stay healthy. He’s going to have his ups and downs. At least again, you could evaluate Mason Taylor a little bit and he’ll be better with Garrett Wilson back in there. like those are those Josh Reynold passes are going to Garrett Wilson and in the right week a couple of them are going to hit. But I don’t know who’s the guy who’s going to like help partner with the defense and special teams to get the Jets to win like three out of six and go three and three where you’re like wow they really turned a corner and not not they had one fluky win over Zack Wilson and Miamiy’s interim coaching staff like 1716 where it’s like okay they went 1 and 16. it. You’re running out of time quickly, which sounds insane to say, but there’s only 10 games left. You’re already 0 and seven. It’s It was a good week for the college quarterbacks, and we’re going to very quickly become draft lands here, not bad lands, because it’s a fat it’s a fascinating conversation because you could ask seven different people who the Jets should take at quarterback and get seven different reasonable answers, I feel like, right now. But here’s the problem. Whoever you want, like if you’re listening to this podcast right now and you want Fernando Mendoza from Indiana, you want Dante Moore from Oregon, you want Tai Simpson from Alabama, you want Jaden Mava from USC, whoever the hell is your favorite quarterback, say the Jets continue on the trajectory they’re on this season. Say that like Joe says, you kind of stumble into a win or two because that’s kind of the league at this point. It doesn’t have to be some convincing win. and they decide to bring everybody back and that quarterback is starting say October next season and this is what the environment looks like again, you’d be sitting there more livid than you’ve ever been as a Jets fan that you’re sitting there and go, we got a talented young quarterback that we really have a shot here with in the next couple years if things go right and we drag the same crap environment from last year into the following year, but instead we have this kid in it right now. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen. I’m saying though, if the season, these last seven games, continues for the next seven games, how the hell do you in your right mind you stick one of those kids in potentially that environment next year? Just make their life so much harder. Like it’s just becomes a steeper hill to climb. And again, you could say, look, it’s not fair to Angran. He’s dealing with fields, dealing with this. But it’s just such a that investment of making that pick, especially when it’s not the slam dunk Andrew Luck type pick where you know who the number one pick’s going to be this far in advance. Like it’s a very nuanced decision where there’s going to be a lot of counter opinions on who you take. And whoever you take, you have to do everything possible to set this person up for success. And yes, I know there’s always an outside chance the Jets, they trade the pick for a hall or they try to make some other crazy move for a veteran. I I don’t know who that veteran is. is like people ask us about Joe Burrows heard all the time. Is that kind of thing going to happen? Probably not. But again, I never thought the Jets would end up with Aaron Rogers and Brett Favre. So crazier things have happened. Uh it it’s just that we’re here already, right? Because you would have thought by now between the Pittsburgh game, the Tampa game, this game, and the Denver game. You would have found a way to win a couple of them. And you’re kind of just staring into the abyss a little bit where I I just don’t know when and how. It feels like you don’t know when or how it’s going to get better. Now, I felt that way about the defense and it’s gotten better the last two weeks. Maybe Tyrod has a couple throwback games and Garrick comes back and Breeze comes to life for a week or two before he gets traded because he doesn’t look like he has any life right now. Um, but man, it’s it’s it’s grim and I again I we close with this a lot and I think we’re going to do more of talking to season ticket holders throughout the rest of the season because we’ve gotten a lot of feedback from last week’s episode and honestly opinions from all over the scale. people saying it’s not as bad as we’re making it out to be, other people saying it’s worse than we’re making it out to be. Right. So that means we’re right because we’re right in the middle. Yeah. It’s an interesting dialogue to have because I just like it’s a nice 80°ree day. You go out to that stadium and it’s just quiet and empty and sad and there’s nothing there’s nothing to cheer about. And I watch all the touchdowns at the end of the day on Red Zone and there’s no touchdowns. And I just can’t imagine being an 11-year-old Jet fan. Like when I was an 11-year-old Jet fan who would eventually grow up to be a psycho recording this at 9:00 at night about no one team, I would like write down in my notebook like who had all the touchdowns in the Jets so far this year. And like they just don’t. It’s the simplest thing in the world. like you need to score touchdowns in football. It’s fun. It’s enjoyable. It makes the sport entertaining. And they just can’t even do that like for their fans. Like it the basics of like having an interception. They have zero interceptions in seven games. Zero. They’re even close to getting an interception though. When do you ever go like Man, they should have had that one. They’re not even close. I mean, I guess Steven’s kind of got his hand on one today, but zero interceptions through JC Horn had two today, including an amazing one-handed one. uh you know they get like one or two sacks a game like we love Phil McDonald he has zero sacks since week one like where could we get a strip sack could like see that could I see that like the moments that you look for from like that are exciting from a football fan like I I just can’t imagine I watched the game myself like when did I cheer I think I cheered a little bit when like Briggs had a sack and like Sherwood had his sack I was like yeah that’s that’s nice but that there’s like nothing so that’s why we’re talking the bigger picture stuff and I don’t think your 30%’s crazy I think we’re very like you said measured and thoughtful about this because one and done is very uncommon in today’s NFL, especially when you’re bringing in Aaron Glenn, a former guy who played here, and you did the whole alumni thing. Like, holy [ __ ] man. Like, we are we’re floating towards the the Kotite zone, which is terrifying, which I didn’t think we’d ever see again. So, what what are your final thoughts before we head into week eight at 0 and seven for the second time in five years? Yeah, it’s just it’s really hard to be optimistic right now. It is. It just feels like really poor decisions. It’s tough when it feels like there’s just poor decisions on and off the field where it feels like the season ticket holders are getting the short end of the stick. Like where they don’t even treat the fans right. It feels like, you know, they’re making bad personnel decisions. They’re making bad coaching decisions. some players and it it just amplifies or magnifies when players make mistakes because you just you just kind of wait for everything to go wrong and that’s how you get to this kind of spot. It’s just I don’t know if I’m falling into the the black hole of just, you know, being so frustrated with the team. But I’m just looking at this more and more as this goes on and just being like, God, there’s a world where you get to January and you need to you need to really look yourself in the mirror and be like, I I think we need to rebuild from top to bottom. I think that we need to once I always caveat this because people get really angry online, although it’s less and less people by the week. Yep. If it continues on like this, if Aaron Glenn turns things around, we will be the first to be happy about it and hopeful about it and all of those things. But if it continues on like this, you have to have an honest conversation with yourself and be like, besides the fact that you might need to start over at head coach and GM because you’re going to be taking a top quarterback prospect with a top three pick. It just feels like you need to look at the organization top to bottom be like, how did we get here? like how did this happen where everything just feels you know am like amateur really it feels really really amateur everything we roll out and uh I think it’s yeah you and I are going to explore I think more of those tough combos unfortunately pretty soon this is what we do it’s a sociological experiment on an incomprehensible situation in today’s NFL that is built for parody to be this bad for this long So, thank you everyone for listening. We’ll be back on the midweek pod uh with War Room. Get those questions in. I know we’re going to get a lot of the draft stuff. Keep it coming. We’re ready to dig into the offseason stuff as you would expect. Uh we’ll have further reaction on the feed tomorrow from Will who was at the game today like a true maniac. And uh that’s it. Thank you everyone for listening. We’ll talk to you soon.
Joe and Connor react to the Jets dropping to 0-7 with a 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers and discuss the future of Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey…

Hello. My name is Dark Souljah.. and I'm a NY Jets fan.
Love you guys, best Jets podcast. Always keep it real. The fact that you both think the Jets are going to win a game, how?? You watch this team play and think they can beat anyone?? c'mon man!
The GM and Coach are rookies. We are seeing them learn in real time. It’s how they respond.
Stop going to games, don't sell your tickets or give them away. Empty stadium!!Sell the team protest at Metlife!
Jets should’ve went Thomas Dimitroff
In the NFL the Jets have:
– the worst head coach and offensive coordinator
– the worst play-calling
– an offensive line 2nd highest in pressures
– a team near the top in fumbles and penalties
– a defense that gave up 31.4 ppg in the first 5 games
– the wr receiving depth in the league
– one healthy, overrated rb in Breece hall.
What could possibly go wrong for the next QB?
You guys clamored for Tyrod for weeks. He came in and gave you 10-22 and 2 ints.
Is it time to stop scapegoating the quarterback?
Probably not with you 2 bozos.
Talking about the Jets = A TOTAL waste of time. Leave the league. Worst sports franchise in history.
Woody has to blow it up again, these guys aren’t it.
First time ever I am actively rooting for jets to lose. We’ve seen enough from AG/Mougey. Don’t want any fools gold wins to give them validation for year 2 or mess up draft order. Miami no show was unforgivable. Didn’t offset it with upsets over Dallas and Broncos, and poor coaching decisions got Garrett hurt which will cost easy wins over Panthers and Bengals. After week 3 this was an easy schedule!
I can understand saying JD deserved to go after 5 years no playoffs but what “mess did he leave behind” that you say? New regime inherited tons of good young players, only (debatably) bad contracts were Rodgers and Adams.
Theyre gonna win just enough games to blow picking the QB they want but dont worry, it'll be good for the locker room. Same old story, year after year. Why is it not ridiculous to fire everyone? They're an 0-7 absolute laughing stock and clown show. Need a young, offensive head coach.
Coulda had Sheduer in the 4th round
Jets need to start Brady cook to see what he can do…The jets should not draft a QB with the first pick draft the best player the Bain kid out of Miami and draft a QB later I would draft Conner Beck in the third or forth before I use a first round pick on a QB
the Jets brand is Anti-Football
It may be because he’s been on the bench but a lot of this loss is definitely on Tyrod. He had two td’s but poorly threw the ball leading to an incompletion and a pick
There is no positive on this team. The Jets will go 0-17. Glenn could be one and done.
Winless Jets has a ring to it!
Let's be clear, he deserved to be benched. But they set him up for failure and we all knew if this off season. They dont have a wideout aside for Wilson. The reporters asked questions about justin not being more explosive in the preseason and the entire staff and justin were aligned with him taking what the defense gave him. Last week he, oc, and qb were good with him taking ten years to throw the ball. And he only gets to throw the vall 10 times a first half most games. He had 46 yds. He thought he was doing his job. That says that the metrics were not aligned. Yes, we knew he was not doing well. But the staff kept defending him and not speeding him up or getting him weapons.
I don't know why I can't just be done with this franchise. I say I'm done, and then I'm back the next year.
I was just looking at Dougey history – head of scouting, player personnel and then assistant GM for a franchise that sucked since their last Super Bowl with a cast of QB rejects which rivals the Jets. How was it determined this was the guy? I just looked at Fields contract – $23mm in 2026. How are we paying that much for a failed reclamation project while still recovering from Rodgers cap hit. Utter Incompetence.
Regardless of whether Glenn comes back, we should definitely have a different OC next year.
I mean we’re tanking, right?….right!!?
Hilarious that offensive genius Robert Saleh comes in and jettisoned Sam Darnold.
This is the typical jet season. After the bye week the team will be in full business decision quit mode
Aren't we sending humans to planets never once imagined, is there a miracle machine ,simulator that if we put Fields all geared up helmets ,wires the whole works, and throw different sernerios at him to just maybe see what actually is going on in that incredibly talented athletes brain? Just a thought. WTF. How much can be thought of is split seconds, close your eyes and throw the ball towards a 50/50 reciever, and let's see what happens, please.
Joe" who is stopping the snowball of incompetence?? The Bye week, lol . I wish it was 2 weeks off, lol. Time heals wounds.
Connor, that senerio you stated about rolling the QB draft out with the same nonsense as were seeing now, can very well happen, maybe a few hype pieces as usually can be added but it can happen, this franchise has to triple check every single body receiving a pay check in the whole organization, from laundry dude, to AG. Someone with a football mind and balls who's been there done and that , a winner, proven winner, they need to start ripping egos apart, or make a fucking decision and get your own stadium back in New York ,get an identity, do something, the F,,,, Giants are a curse to the jets franchise, they put a spell on that shithole stadium, yeah thats it. Lol
Not here for the mougey hate yet. Draft was good, trades have been good and the extensions are good. The dead money was a problem and what team fixes their WR room with just free agency.
Fields decision will ruin Glenn. Still don’t understand what he was thinking with that scrub.
The next HC hire needs to be someone who has proved themselves as a head coach before
5:30 comment on Fields responses had me dead 😂😂😂
This guy is not a NFL head coach
They are worse than the same old Jets…I deleted my charge card info from my NYJ account so those idiots can't auto renew my season tickets… I'm done…64 years old, so sad
Glenn was asleep vs Marino 30 years ago. He’s still asleep. Plus arrogant. Spells disaster
McCarthy next year with McDaniels OC. Let them draft and develop a new qb. This regime CANNOT be allowed to mess up another kid. No 2nd year, dont delay the inevitable. Glenn has no clue.
DUDE DID YALL NOT SEE JOE TIPPMAN JOHN SIMPSON & OLU! ALL GETTING RAGGDOLLED ALL GAME BY #95 BROWN ALL GAME LONG ‼️‼️
I’ll say this assuming reports are true woody hasn’t forced anything this year isn’t on him which is a rarity 😂
Go get byron Leftwich for oc.. get a oc that can coach this offense
At this point.. Let Cook cook! 😂
Panthers are a good team 4-3
