RINK WIDE POST-GAME: Vancouver Canucks vs Montreal Canadiens | Game #9 – Oct. 25, 2025

The Vancouver Conucks pushed to the bitter end but came up a goal short in a 4-3 loss to Montreal. We’re breaking it down. This is Rinkwide Vancouver. [Music] [Applause] [Music] And we welcome you inside the Pacific Toyota dealers studios on a Saturday night. Jeff Patterson along with Patrick Johnson of Post Media and a regular here and on other Nation Network shows. Uh, visit shop Toyota or visit your local Pacific Toyota dealer today. Rinko brought to you in part by Bet 365. Entertaining night. the early start down at Rogers Arena. The Canucks and the Habs, a couple of Canadian teams going at it and uh no quit in the Vancouver Conucks, PJ, but no victory for the Canucks either. No. And you know, ironically, a great start. Great start. We hadn’t seen a lot of those. We’ve been talking about, you know, I mean, every year we talk about this their struggle with starts, but uh yeah, great start and and through two really. I mean, when I left the building, I was like, you know, this team’s been look, this has been their best game of the year, you know, with maybe the only other first period that was better was in Washington last weekend. But, you know, this team had been playing well, controlling the play well. Um, and just all came apart third period, three goals against. And it’s unfortunate because it was Leas Person’s best night statistically, I think, uh, to the eye test as well. That’s the guy that’s getting paid the big bucks. And you want to believe that he can swing games in the Vancouver Canucks favor. He did his part. There were breakdowns elsewhere and we’ll certainly get to that. But to your point about the start, uh that first period was about as good as the Vancouver Conucks could have scripted, save for extending uh their one- nothing lead. Patterson gets his second of the year off the rush. Pretty goal, maybe the prettiest one that they’ve scored all season. Starts in the neutral zone. Connor Garland draws a defender, drops it to Elias Patterson. He attacks with speed. How about that? Uh Philip Heronic with terrific play and nice vision. I like Jake De Brusk sort of working as a distraction cutting through the slot and there was EP 40 to deposit in the back of the net. What struck me on that goal was Garland, Heronic, De Brusk, Patterson all play a role. Not often that Quinn Hughes is on the ice and is nowhere to be found as far as being instrumental in a goal to connect score. It it looked like sort of the coach’s dream. It’s like how you know these are the kinds of things we see them work on in practice. Can’t be all Quinn all the We obviously haven’t seen them practice in a few days in a week or two, but this is the kind of things that we see them again and you know the fact that Person stayed in that spot and it’s really fun to watch again on replay. I mean live it was neat to watch. Then you saw the replay of what happened. The angle that Heronic took was just so fantastic drawing guys with him, putting the puck to a spot where there should be a guy and and it worked so well almost like Jake De Bruss had to like skate around Person to give him his hole. Um yeah, it was great. And like I said, you know, this was a game you’re like, well, you know, they’re they’re making the Habs who have been off to a flying start, had that impressive game in Edmonton. Um, you know, just making a team that’s uh that everyone’s talking about look a little bit like they were stuck in neutral and and you’re like, okay, this this is the Conucks team that they certainly talk about wanting to be. Um, and then they lost their way. Like it’s just, you know, maybe this is all I suppose maybe this is all they have. This is the best they have. uh you know up but you know you’re up two nothing. You want to think you can finish that game off. Took a couple penalties. Couldn’t kill any penalties. Uh came late. You know had a nice sequence. Brock Besser almost tied it up. I mean that’s the thing. There’s lots of good things to say about this team but in the end they lost. Uh we’re going to talk about later. The home again is becoming a story. I mean only three home games but it’s becoming a story. There’s lots to chew on here, isn’t there? Uh yes. And just with the fall classic going on, are you are you suggesting that the Canucks threw their fast ball at the Montreal Canadians and uh I don’t know if the Havs knocked it out of the park, but certainly made contact and were able to move the runners around. Uh they end up scoring three times in that third period and Canucks chipped away. They pulled the goalie with four minutes to go. So Adam Foot uh you know, we haven’t seen him in that situation having to pull the goalie a bunch. I guess they did in Nashville the other night. uh but aggressive and probably the right call and the Canad scored early with the goal he pulled uh to make a game of it and had three and a half minutes still with the net minder out had their looks the best one was the best of them but uh there were a couple of others crazy scrabble in front of the net they got the puck to the net they just couldn’t get it in the net at the end and ultimately it goes into the books as a second straight onegoal loss and now three straight losses after the three straight victories to start that road trip so they are four and five on the season now one and two at home. More on that, the home ice record. But at four and five, quick turnaround. They get the Oilers in on Sunday. Still a chance to get to the 10-ame mark at 500. At 5 and five, 500’s not going to get it done over the course of the season. But when you consider that Sunday night will be the first time in 10 games to start the season that the Canucks will play in the same city. uh on top of all the travel, uh they’ve been challenged off the hop with the logistics, but also the injuries. And so they’re scratching and clawing. I like no issues with the effort. No. in this hockey game, but you are reminded just how young and promising the Montreal Canadians are when they can throw out Suzuki and Coughfield and Demidov and Hudson on defense and even a second line that has come to life and provided them some offense and and did and they get uh Mat the goal from the back end there. Um there’s a lot to like in this Montreal Canadians team. You know, I was just going to say on the sort of that Canucks point like 31 shots. I mean, there was a lot they did well, especially against a team that like you said is playing very well. We can see what I mean the execution in the third period. The wild thing, you know, they come out of that second period and they Montreal had outshot them. Montreal had six shots in the third period, Jeeoff, but they got three goals and they were so quick in in the way they built all three goals. I mean, I’m not a huge fan of uh of how Kevin Lankton played the Mike Matson goal, but nonetheless, this is a team that took his chances. Demadov, I we’re going to t we’re going to talk about all year. We’re not just going to talk about tonight. I mean, this guy’s incredible. Yeah. Uh but just the way they assembled themselves, made things work, moved the puck. I mean, that power play goal they scored, the the the Slapkovsky goal, the way they moved the puck, uh just had the Canucks literally spinning. And that’s the kind of difference you need. That’s that’s the differencem of moments. Kuck got a power play goal, but you know, they couldn’t kill off two straight the first two power plays against. It’s those little moments. Those always make the difference. Uh we want you to be part of the program always. So we encourage your contributions, your questions, your comments, your concerns, you name it. Hit us up in the live chat and uh bring it with a super chat. Once again, our charity partner this season is the BC Mental Health Foundation. changing the face of mental health and addiction by supporting breakthroughs in care, public understanding, research, and knowledge exchange. And we’ll get to it a little bit later here in the program, but uh we’ve total up the numbers from last year, all of your contributions to this show here, rinkwide, but also all the other shows under the nation network tent in Vancouver, Carrison Price and Kucks Convo. And thanks to you, we’re making a healthy contribution uh to our charity partners. So, thank you. Thank you. Uh, we’ve got a super chat. This one comes from I don’t know if it’s justice or there’s no T in there. Justice Usus, I’m not sure, but thank you. Anyhow, uh, sucks we lost and let the game walk away, but on the plus Pet’s confidence coming and he got me hell of fantasy points. Oh, now Jacob’s telling me it is Justice that he just mistyped. So, thanks Justice. Um, yeah, Elias Patterson with his first multi-point game of the season. Uh, gets three points. So, it’s a goal. It’s the primary assist on the Garland goal late. He gets the second assist on the de Bruss goal. And it is a shame PJ because the formula, especially with the injuries that can actually going through is to get top end production. And so, you know, it’s been a slow start for Jake De Brusk, but good to see him get his second of the season. The power play goal made it two nothing. You wanted to believe that that was going to be a big swing point in the hockey game because it came moments after Josh Anderson breaks away shortand it hits the post. Close call at one end, goal at the other. How often do we see that in hockey a lot? Uh and the Canucks were on the right end of that sequence. And so Person and De Bruss get you your goals. They both have two on the season. It’s two nothing Vancouver. It’s all looking good. Uh Hughes picks up a point. Garland gets his third. Like those are the guys and again that they flush a result. The effort. Yeah. fine, but when you’ve got your top end contributing the way that they did in the hockey game, you got to get something out of it and they got nothing. I mean, I mentioned already the best chance right at the end where we just missed, but there was that Besser tip as well, similar to the Garland goal. I mean, Person, you could see the confidence and and I mean, I’ve been saying this, we do these player ratings. We’re doing player ratings every night, right, at the Province. And, you know, one of the things that stood out about Person is he’s carrying the puck through the neutral zone, right? It’s not just, you know, the the board battles have been there as good, the defensive plays been there. some really smart. I mean, he made a great play on the PK uh in the third period. Um but it’s the way he’s feeling confident with the puck. You know, he’s making these moves. One of the things Daniel Agner and I were talking about this in the press box, he’s been making these moves and then stopping. He didn’t stop tonight. He kept his feet moving. Um and and that’s I mean, ironically, other than the goal where he actually did stop his feet, but you know, he’s been making stuff. He’s been moving off where he is and creating space for himself and creating space for his linemates. It’s great to see now up and the other thing is now up to seven points in eight games um or nine games. nine games we’ve been talking I mean people kept asking me before the season you know what do you need from Person I said you need at the very least a goal per game or a point per game player right and he’s getting there and the results are coming he’s certainly the progress has been better start the season all that well all that sort of excitingly well but he started well season well enough we’re starting to see stuff this is you know this was a big game obviously not against guy like David we’ll see how things go tomorrow but this was a guy that you know the Conucks needed a big effort from needed a big performance from and they got Yeah. Uh, prior to the game, four points in eight or four points in eight games. That’s not enough. Yeah. But it is funny all of a sudden a three-point night and you get a lot closer to that point per game and we’ll see if he can build on it. Um, and yeah, I mean, yeah, nice tip pass to Garland in early in the game in Pittsburgh to open the scoring there. There have been some moments, but I was getting a little tired of talking about, oh, there was a nice defensive play here or a nice read. There had to be a tangible takeaway. There was. And unfortunately it comes in a losing cause which is going to lead us into our three stars. Got a couple other super chats. We’ll get to those in a moment. But our three stars here on Rinkwide brought to you by Gretar. Great place to catch all the games walking distance from the rink in the stadium. Or if you’re looking for a place to watch games on TV, Greta has got you covered there as well. All kinds of big screens for all the action. And there is a lot of action. We had three screens going with three different uh games in studio here. They got all the big screens. They got the street food menu. They’ve got game day specials. They’ve got weekly drink specials. All the arcade games as well. Add to the fun if you haven’t already. Check it out. Gretar, the place to be. 50 West Cordova. Greta Bar. Let the games begin. All right. Three stars in the building. Ivan Deid off your iceki. And look at there. It doesn’t always happen that way, but uh uh clearly the star selectors in the building saw it the same way we did here on Rinkwide. First look at Ivan Demidoff in person in Vancouver. Uh I watched the game in studio but you were at the rink for the uh first couple of periods and then you know the cherry on top was the one-timer. Now it does go off DPD unfortunately for Laninan but right in his wheelhouse and he did not miss there. He hits the goal. It’s the gamewinner and two assists. His first career three-point night. Probably not his last three-point night. This guy’s the real deal. What a what an ad for the Montreal Canadians. Does not need much space to do a whole lot. Oh, the pass to Suzuki on power play, the fake and then just slides it right across the vision there. Uh gets the assist on the Slavski power play goal as well. So, uh he was dealing Ivan Demidov looks to be the real deal and just adding to that collection of terrific young talent. There’s Pety. We’ve talked about him an awful lot. Nice night at the office. Let’s hope that there’s more where that came from. And there’s Levski who gets the goal and an assist and he’s the third star because his goal a minute and 50 seconds into the third period that really got the Montreal Canadians comeback going. Atu Ratu takes a penalty at the 20-minute mark of the second. The Conucks were under some pressure. I think he got his stick tied up with Brendan Gallagher. Ratu to the box and so the Conucks came close. 10 seconds left in the penalty. They couldn’t kill it off entirely. And there was Slovkovski parked off to the side of the net. Puck slides to him. And again, Demov, it’s not a rebound that kind that’s a nice play by Demidov. Uh, showing the vision to kick it out to the side. Marcus Person getting spun around there as we watch the replay. And so, uh, Slavowski is a massive man. He’s a big body, hard to move, hard to handle, and has the touch. Almost like he went first overall in his draft year. Yes. I I It was funny. I was just looking I mean I was thinking about how well the Conucks had played to that point and then all of a sudden that I mean you look at Marcus Penderson who I thought had a really good night and then there’s these two power play goals against and they were just kind of caught swimming and he’s swimming a bit on that one and uh but listen these young guys that the Mavs have this is what they do and they move that puck well. That power play was really fun to watch and the fans really enjoyed I am going to be curious because they remind me an awful lot of the Canucks coming out of the bubble when a lot of people in hockey thought the Canucks were sort of the sexy young team and they were and then it all fell apart. Can the Montreal Canadians I mean they’ve got most of their guys locked up long term now so it’s a little bit different. The climate is different obviously. Uh the world is a different place than it was coming out of the bubble. Uh and they look to be the real deal. So we’ll see how it goes from here for the Montreal Canadians but there is a ton of promise there. So there you go. Three stars uh in the rink and on rink wide are Demadov, Patterson, and Slavkovski. All right, a couple of super chats are going to lead us into uh our next sort of train of thought here and that is do the Conucks have a goalending issue and um obviously they’ve got a guy that is he can’t play every game and he’ll play tomorrow night but on the nights that can’t play uh this one’s from someone and that’s apparently that’s all we’re going you got to give us a little more than someone but uh someone’s bringing the heat here says I thought that was their best game But a brutal performance by Lenx. He was way out of position and foundering out there. And then Jeezy comes with a a similar one. Demco in Vzna form early and we’re still 50/50 rotating. Wouldn’t you want to ride the guy that can single-handedly win games for you when your team is full of injuries? Adam Foot Master Class. Uh Adam Foot explained it in detail before the game. And with the early start time, the fact that they got in late from Nashville at the end of the trip, uh, back-to-back games, I almost think they sort of backend loaded this whole week and knew that they wanted Demco against the Oilers and then from there, uh, lay out your goalending. So Demco was never going to play backtoback. No. uh and shouldn’t with his injury history even two games at home like you’ve got to get him his rest otherwise you defeat the entire purpose of having Thatcher Demco and getting him back to his Vzna form. Yeah. And so Kevin Lankinan got lit up in Pittsburgh got lit up by the St. Louis Blues and gives up four here tonight including three in the third period as you said three on six shots in the third. Um, great screen by New Hook on the Mat goal, but still like that’s where a goalie’s got to be able to read the shooter and just find a way to get a piece of equipment on the puck. Um, whatever the case, Kevin Lankin is one and three and he’s given up a ton of goals. This is not when you think of the start a year ago for Kevin Lanken individually, uh, it’s night and day because one win against the Chicago Blackhawks in your four starts, like that’s not it. that’s not giving the Canucks the kind of goalending they’re looking for on the nights that thatcher Demco can’t go. And again, compared to the way that Demco has started this season, it is a total imbalance now in terms of like who is the guy, but you just can’t ride the guy into the ground. You can’t, especially with this compressed schedule. You know, it I found myself thinking of a long ago lesson from a friend of mine who had moved here. You know, this is 20ome years ago. I was kind of going on about some Conucks loss or whatever. He sort of said, “Wait, did you think they’re going to win every game?” I was like, you know, that’s a good point, right? They’re not going to win every game. Um, but I I get the point about, you know, listen, you have this really good goalie. You do have to, and I totally agree with you, Jeeoff, you’ve got to be smart. You cannot push the pace here. You need to, but you know that he’s going to give you a big game every night out. And that’s gonna be like 55 nights a year, right? Like that there’s gonna be a lot of starts. There’s a lot of starts to come. You still need sort of a bare sort of a standard basic competency from Kevin Lankington. And I I think power play, you know, power play goals against, you’re right, there was a great screen. You know, it was it was sorry, power play goals against are like the hard things to judge. And you know, you got the the the puck bounced off Elias Patterson’s knee. You know, the Suzuki pass or sorry, the Demod pass, the Suzuki was so fantastic. Like you wipe those away. It’s the Matson goal. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. Moving screen, distracts the goalie, all that stuff. But I told that to me, that right there was the moment you need the big save and he had some big saves early on. I mean, he he kind of it was sort of forgotten. The Conucks had a great first period. They had nine high danger chances in tight, right? By the end of the period, they were on top of the game. Um, but he actually had a couple tricky saves early on, set the tone, gave his team sort of a a foundation. They played on from that. And then oddly the moment later on, you know, obviously the Havs uh found a found their game in the second period. He did a really nice job there. But in that crucial moment and a point shot from a you know, Mike Mat’s a good defenseman, but I don’t think anybody says this is a guy that can hammer the puck or anything like that. Those are the saves you need. And and so that’s I totally get where the fan frustration comes from because those are the saves you need. that sort of the sort of bare basic competency that you need to give your chance to win or a team a chance to win. And they do need more from Kevin Lankin right now. Like even I go back to the Pittsburgh game, he gives up five individually like the goals. There wasn’t a an absolute stinker there that you just kind of went like, “Oh my goodness.” But he gave up five. Like you’re not going to win. This team’s not going to win when the other team scores five. Um so there just had to be a few more saves there along the way. And I I’m surprised quite honestly in the chat like how quickly people have turned here on Kevin Lanken. Um this guy gave the Conucks terrific goalending. He earned the contract extension. This isn’t about the contract necessarily. It’s in the here and now. It’s just that he’s not off to a terrific start. And on an offensively challenged team, it’s going to be difficult for the Canucks to grind out victories. Like they’re going to need the kind of goalending that Demco has provided. And then uh on nights where they score three or four, that’s going to feel like a luxury for them. But I I do think that their blueprint for wins on most nights is going to be 3 to2, two to one, and it’s going to be on the back of goalending, get a power play goal, get your top end guys, and if you can get a little bit of spread scoring, and you know, Max Assassin’s not going to score on uh half of his shots. He came into the game with three goals on on six shots. That line was pretty quiet. But again, they’re Abbottzford call-ups. They’re not going to uh be the stars every single night and they’ve got pretty good mileage out of those guys uh in the early going. Let’s get to the stat that stands out. It’s delivered by Uber Eats and Uber Eats is enabling fans to maximize their fandom all season long with exclusive game day deals on the app. And every time the Canucks are playing at home, you can get a buy 1 get one six-piece chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s in Vancouver only on Uber Eats. From game day eats to paper plates and napkins if you’re hosting to all the ingredients you need to make your favorite game day dip before, during, or after the game, Uber Eatats is assisting every fan’s hockey experience all season long. # crave the stats. And the stat that stands out is a really simple one, but it’s also something that needs to be discussed here and quite frankly needs to be corrected by the guys that play the games. But Vancouver falls to one and two on home ice this season. Now, three games, not looking for the panic button. There’s no alarm here. But the fact that they’ve only played three of nine, first of all, we knew that lots of road heavy to start. They’re back on the road here after the Tuesday game against the Rangers. I think it’s nine of the first 14 are on the road. Um and so you you want to sort of hold your head above water on the road and try to make hay at home. Well, they got the win on opening night against the Calgary Flames, but really all the scoring there came in one period in the third period. The Blues beat them pretty soundly and here Montreal ends up defeating them. Uh but Patrick, the home customers, the paying customers, they got shafted last season when this team won 17 of 41 games at home. The Canucks missed the playoffs and that home record alone, three or four more wins on home ice and maybe they squeeze into the playoffs last year. Again, three games doesn’t make a season. It doesn’t even make a pattern or a trend, but it’s something that they’ve got to be wary of. And us sitting here and saying, “Hey, they’ve got to win more games at home.” We can shout it from the mountain tops. They’re the ones that have to go out there ultimately and find a way to be better at Rogers Arena. You ready to hear about some process? M I like the process. Well, I went and I It’s only three games. No, I went in part I went and checked out Natural Statre. I was just curious to see what do these numbers actually look like. Now, they aren’t mindblowing, right? They’re very middle of the pack when it comes to most of the numbers. They’re sort of slightly below average on on Corsy, but the number other numbers like they’ve been doing a nice job of keeping the middle of the ice pretty clean, forcing guys to the outside. They’re still playing a lot more on their own end than they would like. Um but in terms of dangers, quality of chances against like they’ve been defending the top of the crease pretty well. Um so through three games, you know, they’ve been out shooting the opposition in tight. Um their expected goals according to natural static is better, but it’s still again only three games. Um but I I would say that like there’s stuff there. They need to keep at it and we’ll see because in the end it comes down to a talent question because you know we’re seeing good stuff. We saw I thought we saw good stuff from the Person line tonight. Obviously Peterson having his game, but I thought Garland de Bruss were good as well. Um, you know, there there was a competency there from the Ratu line. I thought a pretty decent game from them. You talked before line didn’t play very much. You know, that second line, the Kane, Riel, uh, Besser line, which obviously was kind of thrown together. And, you know, I asked Adam foot before the game who we playing with. Well, we’ll start with these guys. We’ll see how it goes. I mean, we know that story from beginning before the season and it was a Filipedal question. Now it’s a someone else question. And to me, that’s just that’s sort of the statement about this team. There’s a lot of like decent kind of things that you see them doing and they’re talking in the right ways. Um, but it becomes, I think, a talent question and to win on home ice, they do need to bear down a little bit. They’re going to have to find things that are beyond their best guys. I mean, that first win of the season, we talked I think we a lot of us talked about the fact that I mean, I wrote about it was that the great thing about that win was that it didn’t involve Quinn Hughes, right? Yep. Now, we’re talking a lot about Quinn Hughes and sort of how his season’s going and that’s a topic for, you know, every night. I think it’s great for a night that it didn’t involve Quinn Hughes, but when you get to the nine game mark and it hasn’t involved Quinn Hughes a lot. Yeah. Um, and you know, you dictate the matchups at home obviously and you want to believe that the home crowd can give you that boost and the energy. Uh where it becomes an issue is now you run headlong into the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night and it’s back toback for both teams and the Oilers are playing as we record this live. I guess we’re live but if you’re listening to it on a podcast, you know, the Oilers are in Seattle and then have to make their way here. Not a lot of travel, but the Canucks get the benefit of a few extra hours rest. They get to put their ace in goal uh against Edmonton. He was terrific in Edmonton on the second night of the season. So, there are some reasons to believe here, but if they don’t get a result against the Oilers, all of a sudden, you’re one and three. And then, you know how much the Rangers are going to want to win for JT. You know how much JT is going to want to win. Um, and then they’re back out on the road again here. So, it can start to slip away pretty quickly, but uh we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. Just wanted to point out that last year was not a good year on home ice, and this year is off to uh they’ve kind of stumbled out of the gate now with just the stumble is a really good home games. You brought up Lucas Reichel and we barely touched on him, but of course we have to talk about him and so let’s sort of dig under the hood a little bit. Uh Lucas Reichel plays 15 minutes and 45 seconds. Uh it’s just a single shot on goal. Um we were told that he struggled in the faceoff circle. Not a natural center, at least hasn’t hasn’t played a ton of center in the National Hockey League. And I think part of the reason is doesn’t win many faceoffs. Well, as advertised, just two and eight. So two of 10 faceoffs. Faceoff’s a problem for the Canucks right Now they don’t really have anybody outside of Au Ratu and that’s again a part of different discussion but it’s forcing them to use Ratu in situations that they probably don’t want to late in the game and penalty kill and those types of things and if he doesn’t win the faceoff then he’s got to be able to play and it hasn’t been a an electric start to the season for him. But we’re talking about Riel flies in from Chicago earlier in the day so what a whirlwind for him. Uh, but he’s a hockey player and he wants to do right by his new team. They traded for him. They wanted to plug him in. He knows that they’re short staffed here. Um, I’m curious again, you got your eyeballs on him in person for the first couple of periods. Yeah. I remember a game last year against the Canucks. Like I was blown away by how fast he was that night and can be. And that’s sort of his calling card here. Did you see his speed, his skating ability in open ice? He’s a really graceful skater. like he was really especially early on there were a couple zone entries where I mean there was one he he carried the puck into the zone and actually you know it was kind of a half break and it maybe wouldn’t have been the best shot but you’re kind of like I think I wanted you to shoot there cuz he kind of forced a cross ice pass I think it was actually Connor Garland had just come on uh for Brock Besser a bit of a a broken line change but you know there were some moments there with the puck where you’re like okay I get it you know this was something that Petro Aline talked about when we talked to him on Friday, he, you know, said, “Listen, we know this guy can skate. I’ve been watching this guy a long time.” Um, and certainly you can see why he’s scored at every other level. The hands are there, the wheels are there. Um, you know, so is there a confidence question? It’s about processing the game. That’s been the criticism of him. And and can he really think the game at this level? Uh, we’ll see. You know, we’ll certainly see. I the the the sort of first look. I mean, there the there was two the two go last two goals against were with him on the ice and his linemates. And you know, I’m not going to blame him for everything. The Matson goal, I think he could have probably tried to find a play. It was a broken play behind him as he was turning. Of course, you’re trying to figure out where you’re supposed to be, who’s who else is out there. Um, yeah, I I appreciate it’s certainly the early stages of what he shows and you’re like, “Okay, I can see it now. What else can he do? Can he actually grow into the player that I think every pro scout the potential would see? They can say, you can see what the tools are. Can he put it all together?” Uh, Conucks came into this game dead last in the National Hockey League, winning 42% of the faceoffs. They won 38% in this game. So, that number is going down. And again, for the most part, faceoffs in the neutral zone don’t really matter. But, there are situational faceoffs and it is coming back to hurt the Canucks and it just doesn’t look like Lucas Reichel is going to be part of the solution on that front. He may add some offense. He may increase team speed, but certainly not looking to him to be a savior. It’s a question, can he just kind of hold his own? and uh 20% in the faceoff circle on I give him a total pass. Yeah. When this day started in Chicago and here he is playing uh a few hours later. So, it’s a tough weekend. Obviously, there’s no letup, but I’m sure he’ll sleep well these next couple of nights and by Monday probably will be gasping for breath and I think Monday will be a team day off after back-to-back games here on the weekend and then of course uh the Rangers in to wrap up the home stand on Tuesday night. This just relentless schedule. I mean, I mean, they fly again. They’re away on the road. Like, just go They’re back in Nashville a week from now at the end of They’re getting their two Nashville visits over just right there. I mean, it happens sometimes, I guess. Lots of talking points to come out of a 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadians and the quick turnaround. One name that we haven’t talked a lot about we in passing there. You mentioned that he was on the line with Riel and Brock Besser, but nine games in. Yeah. And Evander Kane still looking for his first goal as a Vancouver Conuck. On top of that, you wanted to be a physical presence, but in a two- two tie and the Conucks had just given up a pair of power play goals, an ill-advised, needless cross check on Cole Coughfield. Cfield goes down easily, but he’s a young star in this league. And again, I just think better decision from Evander Kane in that situation. He didn’t like the call. Uh camera was right there in his face in the corner. Um but you just can’t do that. You can’t do that at the best of times, but in a tie game where your power play’s taking on some water, just need to see a little more hockey savvy from from a veteran. Yeah. Like it’s one of those ones where like Evander, we know you’re strong. Like you know you’re strong. Um of you know a little a shorter player like that who’s turning off balance. I mean you push him because you know that you can knock him off balance. So I I I suppose this is the story of where he is the player he’s always been is that that’s kind of how his influence plays. Um to me it’s it’s you know he did have some I mean how many shots was it in the end here Jeeoff? Four shots, five shots. I mean he he actually was on the puck quite a bit. Yeah. Four shots on seven attempts. You know like like you know he had the puck. He was seeking the puck out but none of the shots were that convincing. He you know there’s just not there’s not even sort of a heaviness to his wrist shot. it he’s getting there that in many ways maybe this was his sort of most sort of notable game of the year but still like that says something too. Yeah. like he’s you know there’s been nights you know I’ve had a couple were like I said doing the player grade so I think about what what was your influence and I’ I’ve mostly appreciated when you know sort of his efforts at physicality absolutely he’s a player that that kind of thing is not something really had but you know there’s many dimensions to the game and one of them is scoring goals and one of them is not taking penalties 200 feet from your own goal and um you know he’s not on the first power play unit you know he’s now playing with with you know a he’s playing with the guy that is maybe a center, maybe not. Yeah. Um, you know, and and we know Adam Foot has has looked to him to be a veteran presence on this team and he has been a presence. Um, but at a certain point, you need some effectiveness and to date, he has not been that effective. No goals, doesn’t score against his former team, one of his former teams tomorrow. Then it’s going to be 10 games and no goals. And that’s not to say that he’s going to go the whole season without scoring, but you can’t get a bunch without the first one. And and he’s getting tons of ice time. Like the thing you can you can say all you want about he’s not playing with Patterson. He has, you know, Heedle’s gone. Like he hasn’t had much of a center. He’s getting 20 minutes a night. Like he’s getting lots of ice time. His coach is putting him out there to be a differencemaker. And he, you know, he’s not lagging behind the play. He’s not looking lost. He’s just not getting all that much done. And that’s a tough thing. Uh Adam Foot at the podium after the game talking about Elias Peterson said he played great, was matched up against the top line. He was feeling it. I thought he did a lot of great things. He was physical. He was everywhere all over the ice. I liked his game. So, uh coach saw it much as we did as well. And I’m just curious to see what does this do for Le P. Like does this give him a boost of confidence? Does he need a boost of confidence? Is it a reminder that hey, I can impact hockey games and and make some things happen offensively. So, won’t have to wait too long. Um, obviously the challenge he tries to match up against McDavid or Dryidle or both of them. We’ll see what happens. But, uh, Elias Patterson coming off his finest performance of the season. So, that is a good sign for the Vancouver Conucks. I thought Jake De Brusk was noticeable as well. He scored on the power play, puts himself in the right spot. Hugh’s shot essentially hits his stick, but he put himself in the right spot. So, two power play goals for Jake De Brusk. Uh half his goals last year were on the man advantage. So he’s back to doing that. I mean two goals in nine games isn’t great, but remember he didn’t have a goal. Yeah. Nine games in last year and then streaky Jake got going. So couple power play goals still needs to score five on five. This has been fascinating. Like there was so much focus like molten hot the attention on Elias Patterson’s five on five ice time in Pittsburgh the other night. kind of lost in all of this was that Jake de Brusk and there was so much power play time in Nashville the other night that if Dusk wasn’t on the power play, Adam Foot’s trying to get ice time for other guys and it gets a little bit complicated, but Jake De Brusk had a couple of games Pittsburgh and Asheville where he had seven minutes of five on five ice time. This is your leading goal scorer from year ago. So everybody up in arms about Patterson. Well, Jake De Brusk wasn’t playing much. Yeah, it’s just wild how it swings though. I thought he was going in this hockey game. Uh you heard the coach talk about uh Pederson sort of the proxy for that line. Yeah. Um but Jake De Brk ends up playing 16 minutes and 42 seconds at five on five, 19 minutes on the night and he had four shots on eight attempts. So that he’s had a slow start just just noticing him. He can be better. Uh I thought this was a step in the direction. Yeah. You know, it’s funny. I think I said to you right before the Garland goal, I said, “Oh, you know, I mean, certainly finding chemistry with Debros. I’m not sure finding chemistry with Peter.” He did and and I would say that line on the whole. Yeah. Lots of each had their own way of finding things. You know, De Brusk is a funny player because he when I talked to him before the season and I wrote a story about sort of him trying out different sticks. He talked he said to me, he said, “Listen, last year I didn’t feel like I forche very well and that’s supposed to be my game and I’m really focused and so I’ve been sort of every night how’s how’s Deus forchecking?” And you can see he does take smart angles and with a guy like Garland who we know is a very smart forcheer and certainly two years ago had all that success with Dakota Joshua. Now Dusk is a different player from Dakota Joshua um but but certainly as a a similarly smart for checker. You know you can see there’s bits coming together as they start to understand itself a little bit better and certainly as they start seeing how Person fits with them. Um, if that’s a line that I mean it certainly has promise as a line that should work well and and I to you know I it’s been bizarre the de brusk experience. This was one of those nights where like Adam foot was like absolutely going to ride his top line and his top line was going um you know he’s obviously taken a different approach and our uh we’re still learning sort of his rhythms. You know we got so used to Rick talk looking for talking about early game rhythms and things like that. You know, this was a line that was going well from the beginning and and showed well. And yeah, I totally agree. Great game from Jake De Bruskin and really nice goal. The angle, the just the patience he did in finding his way into that spot. It was just absolutely perfect. I am curious though with back tobacks. Can you run those guys 20 minutes again on consecutive nights? He may have to. Uh we’ll find out when the Canucks host the Oilers. 7:00 start. Uh none of this four:00 stuff. Uh it is funny though, the four o’clock start. The Canucks have owned the Toronto Maple Leafs in that 4:00 slot. Uh not the same. Montreal getting the uh 4:00 time slot, the early game on hockey night in Canada. It’s time for our Bet 365 line of the night. San Jose Sharks are in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. Mini is uh kind of hard to figure out right now. Sharks had the big win against the Rangers, then they lost to New Jersey. They’ve been off since Friday. Minnesota lost at home to Utah. So, it’s back-to-back for the Wild. Yeah, maybe they’re angry, but they’re also beatable. I think the Sharks can bounce on a tired Minnesota team. You can get San Jose at plus 185 on the money line. So, there you go. Bet 365. Whatever you bet, never Ordinary at Bet 365. Download the app, get in on the game, use code nation to get you started. And a reminder, you must be 19 years of age or older. Please play responsibly. Elas Patterson played responsibly. had a goal and two assists. A three-point night for PD, our second star here on Rinkwide. Here he is after the game to the assembled media at Rogers Arena. Yeah, I think we started good. Um second pair was pretty good. I think uh that’s 57. I think they got some momentum and and in the third I think I don’t know they got some bounces but we got to do a better third when we play play with the lead. You proud of the way you guys pushed once you got behind to try and get back into it? Yeah, I mean it’s hard to be proud when when you stand down here uh losing the game, but uh I mean the effort’s there, but we just got to tighten up some spaces. Is that the kind of a game where that shows what a swing of momentum penalties can create? Yeah, definitely. I mean, they have a lot of good players. Um and we if you give them too many opportunities, they might capitalize. I mean, I I like our power play power play uh PK. Uh we’re playing good, but um yeah, it’s tough. How about your power play? How did you feel about that element of the game tonight to get a goal? Yeah, felt better. Um but we just got to that’s one goal. We want got to got to bring it every game and um yeah, they score a couple back plays. Is that something that identified in a pregame scale? Yeah, we identify it. I mean, they they’re going to make plays. We’re going to try with them. They’re going to try and break our PK but um yeah um today they can came came up top personal level. Do you feel individual performance? I don’t I mean yeah feels better myself but um stand here losing the game. I don’t really care about that. Changing the focus with Edmonton tomorrow now in another big game. Yeah, I mean Edmonton’s Edmonton uh top team uh top players. So um another big big test for us and um reset and be ready for them. Your thoughts on adding Lucas Reich to the lineup? Uh he looked good. Um big change of scenery from him moving and everything, but uh he looked good out there playing with speed, confidence, and uh that’s what um what I’d like to seen off him playing against him. So, it’s good to have him on the team. What did you make of that play? A nice pass. Yeah, dropped it to Ron and uh he made a great play. He’s tried to find a back door area in case the puck found me and it was right in the tape. So, let’s just try to hit the net for the open goal. You have some chemistry with Garland. What do you like most about playing with him? He’s a good player, make plays, but um yeah, he he’s been showing it all these years here, but I think this year been taking more steps in his personal Thanks everyone. All right, there you go. Elias Patterson wide ranging uh questions to uh the Kucks forward who yeah said it felt good produced but not in a loss. So wasn’t trying to take uh any glory out of a a three-point performance in on all three of the Kuck goals and uh knows that they just got to find a way to tidy some things up there. Was asked about Riel, asked about Garland, and uh on and on it went as I mean you and I we know his body language very well. And I to be honest I would say for the most part even in losses I I don’t know if loose is the word but he’s been sort of willing to engage and the answers are good and he’s talking about in ways he’s like listen we lost it’s great that I’m playing better but that doesn’t matter you know essentially is what his answer was. So, I will say just from that I you know, I appreciate where he’s where he’s at because certainly last year there were times when it was not a good scene and uh uh you know acknowledging that yeah like listen the goal was great. I’m happy the goal happened but we lost. I liked Riel’s play. He’s I saw what I like to see you know I mean um he’s a guy that he knows he’s going to get asked lots of questions. Yep. Um and as we know he does a lot better at answering questions when certainly he’s playing well and obviously when the team’s playing well as well. So yeah I mean we’ll see how things go tomorrow but uh you know that player he’s if they had won that game that he you know that was one of the kind of moments where it was I thought it was a nice interview would be even better scrum. No um showed some patience there. We’ve both been in scrums of his where patience has been in in short supply and and so as you say, willing to engage, I think, is probably the the best way. Ultimately, he was engaged on the ice, but his team comes up a goal short. So, we’ll see what they look like against the Edmonton Oilers, who are in Seattle tonight, and just of note is that Stuart Skinner getting the start against the Kraken, which I would think would mean that Calvin Pickard would be the guy the Canucks see. They saw Pickard on their first road game uh when Edmonton outshot the Canucks 4515 and skated circles and Thatcher Demco was hands down the best player on the ice. So the fact that they’re getting Pickered uh doesn’t mean I mean there’s some people that maybe think that Pickard gives the Oilers a better chance, although Steuart Skinner’s off to a much better start by his own standards. Uh but the Oilers kind of been limping along here. They were 4-3 and one going into this game in Seattle, but they had won their last couple in Ottawa and at home to Montreal the other day. Conor McDavid just the one goal as we sit here right now. He does have 11 points. Uh the nudes with nine points off to a nice start and a somewhat sluggish start for Leon Dryidle has seven points in eight games. Five of them are goals of course on any night. That can change in a hurry. Maybe the biggest surprise Evan Buchard has just two points. All that talk about team Canada, you know, he’s got to be both assists. got to be 2A guy and the points and the power play’s been good. It came into the game at 28% but uh Bousard just uh he’ll get his as we go. Um but uh yeah so you know they’ve kind of by their standards and when you go to backtoback Stanley Cups too the sense of urgency in October um isn’t ultimately I think they’ve learned a few things but what although no I was going to wait for well they had the slow start two years ago that cost Jay Wood’s job they know that you don’t want to fall behind the eightball and they’re not I mean they’re 4-3 and one so it’s an okay start but um they’ll get better And on any given night, McDavid and Dry Sidle can just take over hockey games. So, factory Demco is he he’ll be tested without a doubt. But the way he’s going, I’m sure uh he thinks he’ll be up to the challenge, too. And I’m looking forward to that. What I was actually thinking of was a a conversation I had with Curtis Lazar in the press box uh in preseason because he was, you know, of course, he’s now a Edmonton Oiler, and I said, “So, what’s it like?” And he goes, “Oh, man.” He basically was like, “Our first captain’s skate before training camp.” He shows up and he goes, “Conor is just something else.” Even in that, he was just like, “Let’s go, guys. We’re going to win. We’re going to do it.” And you know, and then he just is skating, skating, skating, just driving everyone to the sort of standard he has. And you’re like, “You got to go.” He was just like, “I got to, you know, this is amazing. We’ll see how this goes.” So, when I was out traveling before COVID, and I remember going to an Oilers practice in Edmonton. Yeah. And there were about 10 guys on the ice and you know how when guys just kind of halfassing it with pucks like this is five minutes before practice officially begins and McDavid came like running down the tunnel like he had been shot out of a cannon hit the ice and the rest of his teammates are going half speed and he like it was wild just the visual like he he looked like he was you know three times as fast as anybody else out on the ice and like you We always hear Patrick Alvine and Rutherford talk about Sydney Crosby and practice habits and stuff, but it was the same thing once Connor hit the ice like there was no more messing around like guys absolutely pick up the pace there and uh you’re not going to catch him obviously, but you could just see what his presence meant even to an Oiler practice. So yeah, we’re talking about practice here. Uh you got to get in the practice of subscribing to our Rinkwide YouTube channel and we thank those of you that have. And again, the Conucks haven’t been home much, so we haven’t had a chance to populate the site with a ton of uh activity and content from the rink, but we will as the season rolls along here, uh this condensed schedule. It really is going to cut into practice time. We’ve already seen that. And here, back-to-back games. Monday will be a day off Tuesday, and then they fly on Wednesday, and then they’re right back out on the road again. So, uh it’s just going to be a different year that way. And game day skates are going to take on a little bit more of a practice feel, and coaches will have to do more video work, I suppose. So anyways, they’re all in the same boat. Every team’s going to go through these uh stretches in their schedule that are hellish and the Canucks just have to or they find themselves in one uh right now four and five on the season after the loss to the Montreal Canadians. I I mentioned it earlier and we had a couple of super chats tonight and I really do appreciate and keep them coming all season long because uh even a little donation here and there uh adds up in a big way to the BC Mental Health Foundation. $1,779. Uh we’re making our donation this week from last season. So we’ve done all the totaling here. The numbers are in and uh yeah, it’s a shade under 1,800 bucks. So thank you to everybody that uh pitched in and contributed with a super chat uh over last season here on Rinkwide and Sarrison Price and Kucks Convo. Just a quick point on the practice question. You talk about how hard they’re going to have to practice in morning’s skates. I mean, I was looking at this yesterday. Patrick Alvine brought it up just in terms of players coming back, but like you’re you know, two games this weekend, day off on Monday, uh morning skate Tuesday, travel Wednesday. They’re not pra they’re not doing a skate because they’re going to St. Louis travel. They have a morning skate in Louis now. They’re scheduled to practice uh Friday in uh Nashville. Uh but then you know or sorry Friday sorry Minnesota they go to Nashville for Monday but you know we don’t know what the schedule is but like they’re they’re if they’re probably surely not going to have maybe they’ll have a practice on Sunday in Nashville. I don’t know. I mean there’s a slightly earlier game on Saturday in in mini but you know then they’re Nashville’s Monday they go to Chicago or sorry they come home they’re not probably not going to practice on on Tuesday the 4th. Like the the next time they may have a practice they’ll have a practice on Friday and then maybe they’ll have a practice at home. home. They’ll have a they’ve got a couple days left. They got two days in a row second day. Surely they’re going to take a day off to get rest, you know, so that you know in the next two weeks. The other point Patrick Alvine made on that is that it makes it difficult for guys coming back from injury because most of these guys, they’re creatures of habit. Coaches like to see an injured guy get a full practice in before they insert them. But I think some of these veterans are just going to have to rely on their experience and hard morning skate, you know, and like they they don’t necessarily like to do hard and they’re only, you know, 25 minute skates sometimes, but they’re just going to have to go at it and do something do something in those between getting their feet under them and puck touches and all those types of things. It uh that’s just another sort of layer to the compressed schedule that when guys are healthy and I don’t think Canucks have to worry about that. Uh, unfortunately for a little while it sounds like Bluger and Leer Mackey and Forbert are all still away and Heedle I even though Patrick Elvine said it was encouraging. I mean we’re still looking a ways down the road and it’s uncertain. Yeah. No suggestion you skate it or anything like that. Like it’s, you know, it’s it it’s it’s going to be tough. And like as you said, all all those I mean maybe Forbort somehow had a setback, whatever that means, but you know, both those other two guys were a couple weeks away and and Hoglander’s still you know what, another month. Yeah, I’ve lost track of the math on that one. No, I mean we’re coming to the end of October, but I certainly I think December 1st would be on the like, you know, we’d be positive for both Hoglander and the team if December 1st he was a possibility. So, we’ll see how things go. Um, just curious. I mean, Demco will play uh on Sunday against the Oilers. Victor Mancini recalled. Yeah, Pio Joseph, it’s been a mixed bag and that may be being nice at this stage. Uh I wonder if uh he stays in the lineup or if Mancini gets an opportunity. Mancini played his game down in Abbottzford on Friday. Was there for the banner raising um you know the new rules in the CBA. So he has paid his penants if you will. Uh gotten his game and he’s back up with the big league team. He’s an option for Sunday uh with back-to-back games. I wonder if they plug Victor Mancini in and if Pio Joseph were to come out of the game uh out of the lineup and then up front they have options but I don’t think that Nils Oman or Joe Bait unless somebody got nicked up in this hockey game or Adam foot you know sensed fatigue. Uh to me that would be the like I I don’t know what’s going to happen like I would assume that Joe Lebate would be the first guy that goes back to average. Wonder if we see him again or if this just turns into a a nice story that he got in his uh Joseph by the way. Joseph Lebate uh you know eight and a half years after last playing for the Canucks. He got to play in Pittsburgh the other night. Well yeah I mean I had a lovely chat with him in training. Remember I saw that he was he remembered me cuz well because I was writing for Kucks Army Jeeoff. Oh my goodness. Governor of prospects and um yeah you’re right. I mean neither of those guys is going to make a real move the meter at I mean, Lebade is is sort of a light ver I mean, not light, he’s so big, but light version of Drew O’ Connor. I mean, Drew O’ Connor skates hard, moves hard. You know, Leate’s more willing to throw punches than MC Conor is, but neither of those guys is terribly busted with puck skills. No. Um, so yeah, listen, he’s a great story, but he’s not going to get in there. I If anybody comes in, it’ll be Mancini. And they do like Mancini. I mean, we they like Many enough that we know that Patrick Alvine asked the NHL if they could have a a variance on the rules because they’re like, “Listen, we want to play this guy. We’re just reorganizing our LTI situation and uh but you know, almost went uh no, nice. We appreciate the idea, but uh no, but you do wonder, like I wrote about earlier, so I do wonder if maybe there’ll be some discussion about moments like that. But anyway, well uh you brought up Kox Army, and that’s a great reminder that if people aren’t checking out Kox Army, they’re missing out. uh uh all of the latest on this hockey club postgame uh day after game. I’ll be working on a mailbag over the weekend. Uh anything anything anytime anything happens with the Conucks, make sure you’re checking it out. Uh I know that uh post media, as you’ve mentioned a couple of times, got the letter grades coming. Yep. Coming up shortly. All right, the report card uh is in. Uh we should mention as well, congrats to the BC Lions. They continue on their role. They’ve uh clinched a home date with a win. uh in Saskatchewan. So, the BC Lions will have a home playoff date like the Vancouver White Caps are going to have a playoff. Busy time on the local sports front and uh lots of attention obviously on the World Series and the Los Angeles Dodgers have tied that at one win a piece. So, a split in Toronto as the series heads for Chavez Ravine. It would be fun to see the Conucks get on a winning note. We talked about, you know, but I mean the White Caps huge crowd tomorrow. I’m sure the Lions are going to have a huge crowd for the home semi you know and they’ve had big crowds all year. Uh it’s it’s a good time to be a Vancouver sports fan. That’s for sure. And you know what? Especially because Elias Person is playing better, Jeff. There you go. Can he follow it up or is it one and done? We’ll find out. We’ll have to wait long to find out. Always fun. I know that you’re going to be sitting in uh occasionally throughout the season. So we next time November. I don’t remember. Jacob knows. Yeah. Well, it’s almost the end of October. So that means we don’t have to wait too long uh for another PJ appearance here on Ring. Tyson Cole will be in after the Oiler gamef uh for the big JT Miller special on Tuesday night. And uh say what you will about uh the people and the players involved. Tuesday should be an event at the very least that uh I’m kind of curious to see how it all shakes down, but the Canucks can’t worry about the Rangers. They got to focus on the Edmonton Oilers on JT will run walk around, give us all a hug. Absolutely. Ask us how we’re doing. Fish bumps for sure or not. One of those two. Yeah, he was always good with us. I mean, he was he always Well, mostly there were some moments, but I would say in general. Uh, Jacob Lazar on a Saturday night with all these sport events happening pulling double triple shifts and we appreciate that. Uh, thanks so much to everybody uh to PJ and uh yeah to you the listener and the viewer. Canucks pushed. They played reasonably well but come up a goal short. 4-3 was the final score. The Montreal Canadians over the Vancouver Conucks. Let’s do it again on Sunday. Uh we’ll be back with the next episode of Rinkquite Vancouver. [Music]

  1. Hmmm…they better start a winning streak in a hurry or they're gonna be out of the race in short order.
PS : my sincere condolences to Flames Nation. Better luck next year gang.

  2. Even though Petey, Garland, and Debrusk had a good game the rest of forwards didn't. Kane and the new Center (?) Reichel were both -2 with Boeser -1. Reichel looks small and slight. I have no idea why defenseman P. Joseph continues to play as he's horrible at this level. Why isn't Mancini in there? How do they have a 2-0 lead at Home half way through the Game => only to lose 4-3. Sheesh!
