Reaction: Winnipeg Jets defeat Calgary Flames 2-1 | WST Post-Game
[Music] Hello everyone and welcome into the WST postgame reaction. My name is Carter Rabchack. In a moment, I’m going to be joined by Michael Reis from Winnipeg Sports Talk and together we’re going to be breaking down the Jets 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Now, on a night where many Canadians were probably captivated by another comeback win for another team, that being the Blue Jays, punching their ticket to the World Series, uh it was the Jets later after the Jays game had ended that stormed their own comeback. In the third period, Jonathan Tave scores his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet. Mark Shaley scores his seventh of the season. Connor Hobbuk was brilliant. And the Jets through six games have already won their fifth straight game. They already have a five-game winning streak under their belt. uh getting close to that 15-1 start that they had last year. Uh a third of the way there with five wins. But let’s bring in Michael Remis to break down this game. Uh Remo, on the instant reaction, what are your kind of initial takeaways from from this game tonight? I know you Mariners fan were watching the Jay’s game. Of course, I’m sorry to bring it up, but like it was a good night for two screens. Let’s let’s put it that way. Two. It was tough. Um I was watching uh at one point I had the the Blue Jays game on. I had the Jets game on, you know, with TV, the prime Monday Night Hockey with Buffalo, Montreal, the two Monday Night Football games. You needed a lot to follow everything. And I’m sure a number of people watching this managed to watch the Blue Jays advance to the World Series for the first time since 1993. Yeah. And the Winnipeg Jets win 2-1. I really enjoyed your intro how you compared the two comebacks. There was another comeback, uh, Jonathan Taves as well, you know, scoring his first goal in a long time and doing it in a Winnipeg Jets uniform, which I’m getting more and more used to seeing, but watching him play for the Jets, uh, so awesome to see and see how smart he is in front of the net, you know, just a casual tip and goal to tie the game. So, it was certainly a great night. And I think a knight will remember for a long time that George Springer home run uh you know where were you moment and you know how during the intermission and I I’m watching the game the Jets game and you hear the Calgary PA announcer announce the score that the Blue Jays have taken the lead and you really had that uh that crossover of sports and fandom. So that was uh that was pretty cool actually. Yeah, that was pretty cool. The moment inside the building. Let me just say this before this is the Winnipeg Jets postgame reaction. We’re not going to talk too much about the Jays. You guys will cover that tomorrow morning. I mean, it’s hard not to I don’t know. I don’t know what the um viewership is going to be, but I imagine it’s going to be like 10 million people for the Sportset. Yeah. For the Sports Net broadcast. So, and yeah, we don’t want to get too deep. This is a Jets. Exactly. As you said, it is Jets reaction, but hard hard not to. Before we move on to the Winnipeg Jets reaction though, let me just say this. If you had told 10-year-old me that the W the Toronto Blue Jays would punch their ticket to the World Series the same night Jonathan Taves scores a goal for the Winnipeg Jets, I think I would have lost my mind. Uh I just the the whole sequence of events tonight from the Jays winning in the fashion they did uh having two screens going watching both games at once. Um and let alone Jonathan Taves playing for the Winnipeg Jets actually scoring his first goal for his hometown team. Uh an incredible story and I think Remo that’s where I want to start uh with today’s postgame reaction was that goal that got the Winnipeg Jets back into it. Let me bring up the goal visualizer here. But a night filled with special teams uh for both sides. And the moment I knew that, you know, this was going to be a game with a lot of penalties was when Calgary took their second too many men call of the period. You don’t see that very often. Um but Jonathan Taves, this was in the third. Um power play goal, second unit was out there. Nice shot from the point from Neil Pian. Um and Jonathan Taves right in the middle there gets a stick on it and it beats Dustin Wolf. Story aside from Jonathan Taves, which you can absolutely touch on, Remo with his comeback and and scoring for his hometown team. A big goal for the Jets who are struggling on the power play in this game. Uh Jonathan Taves gets them on the board and scores his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet. It’s huge. And this P second power play has looked really strong since the first game. You have, you know, really smart players that hang on to the puck. They don’t turn it over. You know, you see Nino need Rider and Nomesticov the connection there on the entry. Gus Nyquist solid as well. And Jonathan Taves just going to the net and Neil Pian puts a shot on, you know, just a soft shot on net for the tip. Almost reminds you of the shot he had on overtime of another game seven against the Blues that that Adam Lowry uh tipped in. So, I mean, you don’t have to blast at 100 miles an hour. Just put it in an area and these guys are so good. they’ll get a stick on and you felt that it was coming when he had that assist uh last game on the power on the power play goal. Um you know I saw people from Chicago tweeting out, hey that’s vintage JT right there and he talked postgame how he feels it coming. You know he’s not thinking as much. He’s getting used to playing and you saw it right there and huge benefit and you start thinking okay now you see guys like Adam Lowry skating you know could he be back early November Cole Perfetti I mean how deep is this lineup and they just keep winning the games uh they’re supposed to now Connor Halabuk I think had a huge part in this win but he’s part of the team he’s he’s the MVP and you’re going to have to rely on him some nights more than others but the Jets hung in there in the third period period and anything can happen in one period and they were able to capitalize on one of their power plays while denying Calgary many of their power play opportunities. So, uh, I mean, five and one, I didn’t think they’d come close to the start they did last year, but they’re certainly taking a run at it. And with the opponents this week, Connor, in Seattle, who’s been on a real long road trip here, and Calgary again, you know, you got Utah, they certainly Chicago, Pittsburgh, you know, LA’s had a tough start. They I don’t think they’re gonna dup, you know, replicate what they did, but they’re certainly going to give it a pretty good go here. So, re really impressive that, you know, five wins in a row after the the opening loss to Dallas. Yeah. And I said I I brought up the schedule on WST Sunday Live and we kind of ran through it and I said, you know, the Jets tougher part of their schedule or the easiest part of their schedule by far are these first couple of weeks of the season. Um, and there’s never a good time to be missing Adam Lowry and Dylan Samber and Cole Perfetti. But if the Jets can walk away with some wins, I think I even said before the season if they were 500 by the time those guys came back, I would have been okay with that because I think the Jets th those three players have such a big impact on winning and losing for the Winnipeg Jets. But they’re finding a way. They’re finding a way and it’s not pretty sometimes. uh as seen by the power play tonight at times before Tav’s goal and Connor Hellbug needing to be amazing on on the penalty kills at times and all of those things. It’s it hasn’t been pretty, but they’ve won five straight games and you can’t take that away from them. And you also can’t take away the fact, nor should the Jets apologize for having the reigning heart trophy winner at the highest impact position in hockey. That’s in net and that’s what Connor Hellbuk did tonight. Uh let’s go to the Jets second goal remo that got them uh the lead with uh just under five minutes remaining. It was Mark Shiffley who we’ve talked about two episodes in a row now is on an absolute tear. His seventh goal of the season, a great twoon-one. Connor to Shley. How many times have we seen this over the course of these guys career? Um Mark Shley, the all-time leading scoreer in Jets 2.0 franchise history. And it’s because of plays like this. Uh capitalizing with Kyle Connor on a two-on-one. And as you see there, Josh Morsy with a an assist way back in the play. That’s assist uh career assist number 295, making him the Winnipeg Jets 2.0 franchise leader uh for assists by a defenseman passing Dustin Bufflin. So we had another record broken tonight. Uh that one by Josh Morsy on the secondary assist on the goal. But your thoughts, Remo, on this one gave the Jets a 2-1 lead and was the eventual gamewinner. Yeah, and these guys are are such lethal scorers and and what is this the third or fourth game in a row that we’re talking about a beautiful pass from Kyle Connor who’s known as a scorer and here he is and they set up a a pretty perfect uh twoon-one and Mark Shley you know was asked after the game about this hot start he’s having seven goals 10 points it’s fifth in the league right now and he says I play with great players and you know he credited for Wheeler for giving him so many tapins when he set the record, you know, for franchise points. And here it is again, just going to the net and Kyle Connor makes a great play. And these guys have had such a connection throughout their time with the Jets. And it’s, you know, great for the for the organization that these two are going to be together uh now that for the foreseeable future now that Kyle Connor signed his extension uh before the season. So, they’re such a great match. They’re a threat to score every time. And you look at the Jets what expected goals numbers and you know they’re they seem to always have above average finishing and when you have players like Kyle Connor and Mark Shley and you see that chemistry on the ice together uh that’s why they’re able to you know pot so many goals. So uh that was just a great play. They’re a threat to score any time. They found an opening and they took it and the Jets took a 2-1 lead and were able to you know shut the door after that. Yeah. And there were some tense moments down the stretch um with, you know, another penalty being taken by the Jets late. Uh that one by Jonathan Taves. I believe it was a slashing. They might have called it holding. They called a few holdings tonight as well. Um but that one saved a goal, if you will. Raspus Anderson kind of wide open in the slot. Did this slash affect the shot? Uh he sailed it high and wide. Was a glorious chance. So that’s a penalty that you’re not really happy about. um are not really not happy about in terms of maybe it saved a goal. But do you think the Winnipeg Jets have a I mean clearly they have to start this season a bit of a penalty problem Remis but the penalty kill has just been so good that it hasn’t really mattered. You look at the penalty percentage, penalty kill percentage, number one in the NHL right now after six games, Winnipeg Jets 96.3, which is uh pretty impressive. I’m sure at some point they will, you know, allow some uh some goals. They won’t be at 96% the whole season. I’ll tell you that. You look at Yeah. You look at time shortorthhanded, Connor. They are fifth in the league at 27 times shorthanded. you know, you go down to the bottom, the Ducks only 13 times shorthand or the Red Wings 13 and that’s in, you know, six games as well. So, yeah, maybe they do. I was just thinking Jonathan Taves going to the box. He’s had a couple couple penalties here uh in the last few games. He had what, four minutes against uh Philadelphia and then two here. So, but hey, that’s a penalty and the guy’s in the slot about to rip a shot. You don’t mind that one. And I am curious what’s going to happen with the penalty kill on a bit of a heater right now, but that’s great. Uh it’s, you know, last year it was the power play that was on the heater that propelled them to that great record and the penalty kill uh pretty good. And you’re seeing guys, guys like Mark Schiffley having a huge part of that as well. And hey, short-handed goals for the Jets leading the league in that category with two ti tied with the with the New Jersey Devils. So, uh, pretty impressive, uh, pretty impressive stuff. So, the short-headed goal differential, Connor, for them, one that that definitely won’t stick. I I can tell you that. Logan Stanley joked about that the other day, like, I don’t know if that’ll hold. That team has never outscored their uh, their penalty. You’ll take it for now. Ex. Exactly. For now. This is like my whole point with the Winnipeg Jets to start this season. you’re missing these key players, Lowry and Samberg, of which who are maybe the Jets’s two best penalty killers. Definitely two of their two uh best penalty killers. And they’re they’re managing. They’re managing and and it’s really impressive. Uh a few other numbers from tonight’s game. Uh Jonathan Tay’s faceoffs won 15 of 21, 71%. Mark Schiffley won 13 of 19 for 68%. The Jets were dynamite in the dot, 64.4% as a team. Uh, and a lot of those coming on the penalty kill as well when you can shave off 20 30 seconds with an immediate faceoff win and a clear. So that definitely helps the Jets kill off some time as well. Neil Pianc was your Jets time on ice leader 2524 and the low I bring up the time on ice to bring up the team low in time on ice. Remis Brad Lambert at 7 minutes and 43 seconds. Now Scott O’Neal said after the game uh it sounded very genuine when he said I feel bad for Brad Lambert. There were so many special teams uh so many penalties, so many special teams moments in this game that Brad Lambert, not on the penalty kill, not on the power play, didn’t really get an opportunity to showcase his skills in this game because there was just really no flow and rhythm to this one. But is there anything to take away Remis from Brad Lambert’s seven minutes of play? Um, I’m sure we’ll see him again before going down to the Manitoba Moose because the way Scarter Neil sounded after the game, he genuinely felt bad that there were so many penalties that Brad Lambert only played seven and a half minutes in this game. Yeah, each team had five, you know, power play opportunities and it makes sense. You look at his ice time. Yeah. Doesn’t play on the power play. He’s not on power play two. He doesn’t kill penalties. I like that they called him up and they seem to be rotating. guys in Chibberov got a shot. Parker Ford in there now Lambert and you you almost start playing the game. Okay, who comes out when Perfetti comes back? He started skating and whoever was in that spot I I think would be the candidate. So look, Lambert, he’s he didn’t have, you know, the best season with the Moose, but no one on the Moose did last year. And maybe he’s he’s put in some work this off season. So, it’s hard to evaluate, you know, in 743. It has been interesting, Connor, though, like the Jets have been so balanced with their line deployment. Morgan Baron 1146 and Cole Kepky 1043. Those are the other low. And again, you look at uh the Jets defense, what Logan Stanley number what he’s he played 1412, Aiden Flurry 1426, Luke Shen 1422. It’s amazing how even it is. and that hasn’t been the case for the Winnipeg Jets of old. So, I think it’s just circumstances for Lambert and he’ll get more opportunity in the future. Yeah. And I asked Scard Neil about the time on ice distribution after the Nashville game on Saturday. Um because the team low or the forward low in that game was I believe Cole Keepy with 11 and a half minutes. And you just you don’t see that around the NHL. You see a Brad Lambert with seven minutes of time on ice. see that happen around the league where teams are just not playing certain guys down the stretch. But the Winnipeg Jets have with Bonus and now Arneal have created kind of this on ice culture of everyone chipping in and Arneal really carried that forward with putting Shley and Connor on the penalty kill. There are a lot of players that chip in on the penalty kill on the power play different units different situations. They want to be able to trust everyone on the ice in multiple situations, needing a goal late, trying to protect the lead late, being on the penalty kill, being on the power play. And that helps them evenly distribute this time on ice really across the team. And it’s it’s great for fresh legs. It’s great for when you need Kyle Connor and Mark Schaefley to make a big play with just under five minutes left, they have the legs to do it. Mark Shaley has the legs to beat his guy to the back post. Um, and all of those things. and it’s and it’s something that will keep your players fresh throughout the season as well. So, I do like what I’m seeing from the Jets. Even time on ice distribution throughout the season, even if tonight Brad Lambert was a bit of a victim of that and the special teams uh really bit him, but we’ll see if he gets some time uh in the next couple of games here as the Jets play three games in four nights. We’ll talk a little bit more about that coming up here. But before we do that, we got to get to our segments. Like, let’s let’s get to this one right now. The hardest working jet. The hardest working jet of the game. This is our hard hat award. Um, could be an unsung hero, could just be your straightup player of the game. Uh, let us know in the comments down below who was your hardest working jet in tonight’s game. Remis, I’ll let you go first on this one. Who do you got for your hardest working jet? I’m going with Connor Halabuk, the goalie. Faced a lot of shots. 33 total. stopped 32 of them. Number of power plays for Calgary and he is the rock back there. He is the team MVP. Uh he showed up uh for this one and you look at goals saved above expected on money puck 2.27. Uh impressive stuff. He’s been very solid to start the season and I’m sure the next time they play Calgary, what it’s going to be Comry, but he’s been great and certainly defending his uh his Vzna title here. I’m, you know, to start talking about yet another Vzna for this guy. Uh it’s been incredible what he’s doing. Just very solid, very consistent. You know what he’s going to get. He’s in every game. And uh yeah, I’m going with Connor Halabuk here as the Jets were giving up the shots and he’s been very strong and even when he gave up five goals to Dallas. Yeah, he he was the reason why that game was close. He had a positive goal saved above expected in that game if I’m not mistaken. So the Jets gave up so many chances that five goals wasn’t enough for analytically Connor Hellbuck to have a bad game which is just crazy to say. He’s so consistent like you said he’s a workhorse tonight. Another two goals saved above expected. Both Money Puck and Natural Statrick had Calgary at around three expected goals and they ended up with just one. And Scar Neil, Mark Shiffley, Jonathan Taves all spoke to how brilliant Connor Hellbuk was on the penalty kill post game. So your goalender has to be your best penalty killer. All three of them probably used that saying because it’s very cliche and Connor Hellbuck was in this game. My hardest working Jet Remo is going to be more of a legacy pick. It’s Jonathan Taves. Uh the hardest working part is him getting back to this moment, taking two years off, getting his body healthy, coming back to his hometown team, and he scores a goal in tonight’s game. And the hardest working Jed is also very much an eye test award um on a game-by-ame basis, and I saw him win a lot of faceoffs. I brought it up earlier, 15 for 21 in the dot. Um he’s he’s been everything advertised in the faceoff circle. you knew the Jets were going to be a better faceoff team with Jonathan Taves in there. Um, but also the goal, he’s penalty killing. He’s on that second power play that scored the goal. Uh, the timing seems to be there. He’s a little bit more poised with the puck. So, like and when I’m seeing from Jonathan Taves, but like we said, this is going to be a process. Scarter Neil even talked about that after the game. Um, buying into more of what we’re seeing from Jonathan Taves maybe in game 70 than we are in game number six. But so far so good. uh got his first tonight as a Winnipeg Jet. Now, Remis, it’s time for our second segment. It’s our standout stat of the game as we put our glasses on and read all the fancy numbers. Uh what’s your standout stat of the game? We talked about it a lot, but it has to be the Jets penalty kill bailing them out again this year. Five for five, perfect. We went over the numbers before in the NHL, been number one. that certainly helped the team on this fivegame win streak. So, you know, we we talked about this quite a bit. I can go with what faceoff percentage as well. Jets dominating the dots 64.4 and that was a concern. You mentioned TA’s numbers. Uh there’s many to choose from, but I think the penalty kill has been very key to the Winnipeg Jets success so far this season. Nice. Yes, the penalty kill has been awesome. I’m gonna go with the other special teams unit and and just solely focusing on this game. And the Jets went one for five. They had 28 shots on goal in the game. 20 of them came on the power play, which is just a crazy number. I know they had five power plays. And as Scott Neil and all the players alluded to after the game, there was really no flow and rhythm to that game because there was so many power plays, so many penalties on both sides. But for 20 of your 28 shots in a game to come off the power play, no matter how many you had, um, is pretty incredible. So also 14 of their 17 high danger chances in the game came off their power play as well. So they were generating they were getting shots on goal. Um and then the five on five uh Scardal talked about there being really no rhythm. Uh that showed in the numbers as well cuz the Jets uh did not generate nearly uh enough at five on five in this game but generated a lot in the power play. Hellob was brilliant. Penalty kill like you brought up Remis for your standout stat of the game. But 20 of their 28 shots coming with the man advantage. That’s my standout stat of the game. Now, Remis, let’s look ahead to the Winnipeg Jets and their upcoming schedule here. They’re now going to get a two-day break, which is rare in this uh this current climate with the condensed schedule. They have two days uh without a game, and then they’re going to return home and take on the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night. That is the first of three games in four nights, all of which are at Canada Life Center. Uh the first being Seattle, then they rematch against Calgary. this the very next night it’s a backto-back and then Sunday night they take on Utah um at 5:00 PM at Kennal Life Center and then they hit the road for one against the Minnesota Wild. But this upcoming weekend, three games in four nights against three teams that did not make the playoffs last season. Uh what will you be watching for when it comes to the Winnipeg Jets? Yeah, Seattle’s been on this uh wild road trip here. They were just in Toronto, uh, wearing what they went what were they? Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Philly tonight, and then New York or no, sorry, Washington Tuesday a backtoback and then the Jets Thursday. So for so this is a one, two, three, four, six game road trip and the Jets kind of advantageous for them to be the last team. I’m curious what Seattle is going to have in the tank and Utah. I’m really interested to see a lot of people picking them to take a step towards the playoffs. They signed or the the rumors of the contract that was offered to Logan Culie, Dylan Gunther, but that top line’s been pretty well doing pretty well with Schmaltz and Keller well coached. Uh Utah I’m looking forward to seeing. And Calgary, I don’t know. You look at their defense. I know they were close to the playoffs last year, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. Uh for them, they do have a lot of draft picks to retool. And we talked a lot today. I want to pick Sports Talk daily with Pat Steinberg. The way the season has started for them, did you know do they look to trade some of their pending UFAS like Arasmus Anderson? So, hey, you still have to show up and play. It was a nice road win for the Jets probably capable of more and they would say that, but hey, you get the two points. They’re off to a good start and you have some team teams that as you said last year were not in the playoffs and a good time to bank points for them before you start, you know, really ramping up the schedule as they’ve only played Dallas once. Colorado off to a nice start in your division. So, the Jets are looking pretty good. Like to see them continue to improve and get better. And I’m curious how Seattle’s going to look on that Thursday game at home for Winnipeg. Yeah, I was one of those people that kind of picked Utah to make the playoffs this year. Took Logan and Dylan Gunther in my fantasy hockey league. So, I’m excited for that game Sunday as well. Usually the Sunday games aren’t the the marquee matchups, but Utah’s a young and exciting team. Always love watching them. And then Calgary again, I mean, I thought they’re one and six on the season now, but I thought that they brought it tonight in terms of effort. They were in that game clearly. They were winning one- nothing for the majority of it. Uh, and the Jets good road win. uh won it late with a comeback victory, but Calgary, they’ve got some stuff going on there with some some effort issues with Sharon Govich being a healthy scratch tonight and all of those things. So, very very interesting to see how they come back at the Jets and the Jets that night will be on the second night of a backto-back. So, lots to watch for uh this weekend, Remo, as the Jets return home. There’s a couple of those home backto backs this year, which were very, very rare. So, I’m curious how the team is going to perform on those. Uh, yeah, interesting wrinkle in the schedule this year, but as you mentioned, a couple days off here to recover and you know, they’ll play this heavy weekend schedule, Thursday, Friday, Sunday. Yeah. Not to look too far ahead, but starting November, it’s the West Coast trip for basically two weeks. um uh they’ll they’ll be that the November 1st home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but then LA, San Jose, Anaheim, Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary, all starting at 9:00 p.m. Central or later. So, uh you’re going to have to readjust your sleep schedules. I’ve blocked out that twoe stretch on my calendar for a while. It’s going to be up late. Hardest working Jet for me is Jonathan Toews. Runner up is Helle.
I love your post game show. Winnipeg has such an amazing post game content with WST, IC, K&R, CJOB Radio and those other guys too.
Hardest working was Pionk; many lay downs to stop passes, lots of ice time and again a wizard on the power play.
Kadre lazy backcheck on Sheifs goal.
Love watching these post game reactions with my coffee the day after. Thanks guys!
Love the Visual for Scheif's goal!! Great way to "show the play" without using copywrited broadcast footage!! ! LOVE IT – Keep it Up!
Which duo is better, 55/26 or 55/81?
