The Freckle Bamba is behind the Mac. And yeah, that was a difficult 133 to 111 loss tonight to a team that’s expected to be a true contender in the Western Conference. And they showed it tonight. Well, the Suns showed that uh they are in part who we thought they were and that their margin for error is extremely slim. Yeah. uh they didn’t do nearly enough of the things that they needed to which we spoke to in pregame during the actual game. And when you’re going up against a championship nucleus of players that Denver has and though Adelman is a new head coach, he was the assistant coach for that specific team. There’s a level of execution stamina you need because they’re not going to make that many mistakes. This was a game where they made plenty, but they’re not going to make more than you typically. No. And when you don’t take advantage of the ones that they do make, you find yourself down by multiple possessions. Yeah. I mean, you had you had every opportunity, at least early in this game, to not only keep it close, but take a lead. You didn’t do the little things. Well, we again, we talked about that pregame. When you are a team that will have a talent deficit in most situations, especially against a top team in the Western Conference, the little things are going to make the big difference. The small things that you a better team can overcome, you will not be able to. And that is exactly what happened tonight. Uh execution on defense was sloppy like it was against the Clippers. Gave up way too many points down low. And it wasn’t because of Jokic. It was because of guys cutting uh and getting easy looks there. And you’re just not going to win like that. And you’re not going to win when you have uh essentially what was some dumb fouls throughout this game and in particular early. Yeah. Uh, that was some of what I was looking for them to correct, but I saw a pattern from last game to tonight’s game, and that was them defending three-player actions where a team has a playmaking center that’s being used to either play off of handoffs or make passes. And it’s a different play in terms of what the players are doing within it, but it’s a very similar context where last night it was Zubot with Harden. Harden receiving a screen coming off of a handoff and he’s getting into pull up threes and he’s doing that three or four separate times and because of the timing of it is just burning the Suns. We see the exact same thing happening today just in the Nuggets context. Aaron Gordon initiating kicks it over to Nicole Joic at one of the elbows and they’re playing off of screens between Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray and Reed and React. And the Suns just aren’t sharp with their communication, nor are they good with their positioning. And the Nuggets essentially get whatever they want each and every time they went to the action. How much do you think that is these guys not having played together much? Because communication is one of those things that grows over time, right? And and understanding where a guy’s going to be. Tonight it was pretty clear they weren’t communicating on the defensive end because it seemed like guys thought they had help, they didn’t. All sorts of things going on. But is that something that can build over time for such a different roster? 100%. It’s something that can and it’s some it’s certainly something that better. Um, but I think this is a little bit of the early season new players kind of still figuring out the chemistry with one another. That particular action when you have a big looking pass and guards and players just screening for each other, it’s very hard to guard if you’re switching. And they haven’t had any reps against teams that play that style of basketball. Now, naturally, the very first game of the season would have been it if Sabonis was available because he’s arguably the best big in the league after Jokic had playing that style of play. So, they would have had it in game one, two, three, and then they’ll obviously have it against Utah in game four on Monday. But, um, but yeah, that’s something that they’re going to continue to be tested with because more teams are playing that style of basketball. Yeah. And I know a lot of people want to go, oh, we’ll look at look at the offense. The to me this is a defensive problem. you’ve given up 70 or more in the first half of all three games. You can say, “Okay, maybe Clippers and Nuggets, that’s a little bit forgivable. Kings, it’s completely unacceptable, especially without Sabonis.” This team will only go as far as they they can play defensively. And we know they’ve got guys that that will try hard, will work hard. I it’s not a system thing. I mean, right? It’s not not that we can determine that through three games, but this just this just seems like little things and that that’s going to drive me nuts because they know that they can’t screw up like that. They know that they’re not they’re not talented enough to do that. And yet, again, it just seems like they get lulled to sleep. At times, it felt like they were watching Joic and forgetting about guys behind him. Yeah, it’s it’s one of those early season things where again it’s saying the same thing, but it just takes time. It takes reps. It takes time under tension together and then having film to assess it from and obviously even more so iron out the kinks with that practice whether it be walkthrough or in live action u because it’s not going anywhere. More teams are playing this style of play. You have to figure that part out defensively. Um, so it’s just it’s just a little it’s a little little snag in the process, a little speed bump early in the season for them, but I think it’s something they need to address quickly because teams are scoring at a rapid pace against them from that specific action alone. Yeah. And I mean, I hate to sound like a broken record, but again, if we’re optimistic, and that’s still mid-30 wins, you lose, you’re going to lose 40, and you’re not going to look good against some some of the good teams. I know we all got caught up in the hopeium, the excitement. And I still think there there’s a path to being that team that that hits the over. I I don’t think that they’re not capable of that. But again, we we got to remember we’re expecting mediocrity is what we’re hoping for. They’ve shown that in the last two nights against top quality opponents. I mean, it’s I think we have to get used to some of this happening and and accept that the path that they’ve gone down, the way that they’re going to have to build this is going to lead to things like the last two nights. It might, but they got to do a better job of controlling those controllable parts in all of that for me. And I think they can be more physical than they’ve been the last two games on the defensive end. Because I feel like that’s where a lot of the issues that we’ve seen persist kind of emanate from. It’s guys having too much freedom of movement. Obviously, you have to concede some to not foul, but are you early in the game testing the limits of that to see, okay, the refs are allowing us to do this much. So, we’re going to take scale back a half% with that so we don’t get a foul called, but you’re not going to comfortably be coming off of these screens, nor are you going to be comfortably receiving these screens from someone else or setting these screens from someone else because we’ll be sharp with our communication and things like that. And I think again, it’s just something that they’re going to get to at some point, but it’s going to take a little while um in this early portion. And it doesn’t help that you’re going up against a couple of the best teams in the league back to back um on the road. Do you think this team’s capable more physicality though because they are going to give up size? We’ve we’ve talked about that as well. You don’t really have a guy that fits a typical forward power forward sense. I get it positionless basketball, but size does matter. And in a night like this where there’s no Mark Williams, you’re conceding size just by starting Oso ADARo, not necessarily in height, but just in in width and weight that you’re automatically giving up. So I I I’m not sure how much more physical you can get in in a night like tonight in particular, but I I don’t know if that’s the kind of physicality you’re talking about. Oh, no, for sure. I think that’s that’s that’s part of it because I’ve never seen a successful defense that isn’t physical, that’s not setting the parameters or dictating the terms of play based off of how they’re going about defending again to the legal limit defensively. Um, they have it in them. I think there’s a handful of players that have that as part of their personal identities. You look at Ryan Dunn obviously struggles with fouls at times, but he’s not for a lack of physicality. Often sometimes it’s too much. Dylan Brooks toes that line sometimes goes over it. But again, that’s part of what he does. Royce O’Neal the same. They have guys that do it. I think Nigel has that in him as well. They just have to do a better job of bringing that together as one to not allow for some of the slippers that we’ve seen. Um, but they show it. They show it when they’re on like the defensive rebounds and offensive to rebound the glass as well. They just got to figure out how to put it in other kind of compartments of the game and they’ll be all right. Do you buy into, they said this on the broadcast, but do you buy into the thought that anything early on is good because it gives you the ability to go back and watch film and adjust, especially for a young coach like Jordan. 100%. That’s exactly why I was eager and excited for today’s game, but generally this first 10 games because for all of the positives that came from preseason, they didn’t really get tested that much with the main rotation players. Obviously, we also didn’t see them with Mark Williams or Jaylen Green. So, that’s part of it. Now, obviously, we haven’t seen Jaylen quite yet. I imagine he’s back within the next week or so. Hopefully, no wood to knock on, but if you could, you could imagine what I was doing with that. But, it’s just a learning part because now you can really start to assess, okay, this is where they are. This is where I thought they would be, and this is what they need to do as far as trends and setting things back, but also improving upon specific things. And that’s the fun part, at least for me. I know some people are getting caught up in the wins and losses. The fun part for me is just seeing them identify weaknesses, have them exposed, and then see what how quickly they respond and the ways in which they go about doing so. Yeah. And I don’t think there’s been any weakness that it stands out as, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t expect that.” Uh, but I’ll get concerned if you go in and you play this way against Utah, who isn’t supposed to be a very good team. I mean, that’s that’s the kind of thing that that’s where I’m going to judge more is when you’re playing a team more at the level that you’re expected to be at, how are you actually competing? How are you playing? Are you are you making these same kind of mistakes or are you cleaning that up and being able to play lifting your level up against a competition that’s less than the Clippers and the Nuggets? If you’re doing this stuff against those kind of teams, that’s when I’m massively concerned because then that means the bottom is is going to is falling out in some ways uh even early on. So, I don’t panic over two losses to two teams that are supposed to be competing for a title when you’re saying best case scenario you’re competing for a play spot. Yeah, I think that’s a good point you’re making as far as them bringing it against a team that’s a little bit closer to, if not exactly on that same level of expectation or in that same realm of expectation as they have. Um, I think that’s important to note. And for that reason, I think we don’t want to jump the gun too much, but is is Monday a got to have it or a must win for you? I mean, is moving up that meter? I mean, you know, I wouldn’t I would never say against a Clippers or a Nuggets team that it’s a must-win because you’re not likely to win. Against Utah, a team that you should compete against. Yeah, I think we’re moving into that 7 89. See, I didn’t say six, so is it? Uh 7 89 range there where it starts to feel a little bit more for sure. Right. And if you lose Monday, I believe you play Utah again on Friday. Yeah, that Friday is is definitely a a mustwin at that point because you can’t you can’t continue to look bad against uh against competition that’s supposed to be at your level. Uh Sean in the chat says until we get a good sample size with JG, I’m not going to panic. And I agree with that as well, right? Like we don’t even know what this team is with a full slate of players. We haven’t seen Mark Williams start a game yet. Play more than 25 minutes. I mean, I do kind of question why you play him in the front half and not against Joic, but I don’t get paid the big money to make those decisions. Didn’t make uh complete sense to me. But, uh, I would say though, real quick before we get to the rest of the show, that that um that Utah Jazz team is fun. Will Hardy is coaching his butt off and they’re on a certain type of offense that is going to inevitably test these exact weaknesses that we’ve been speaking to with the Suns defense. Yeah. So that that that issue isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And I imagine they’re going to have to have some answers for that game come Monday. Yeah. I’m imagining Jordan not is watching a hell of a lot of film. They probably got clips already sent to guys phones for this road trip. Yeah, for sure. He’s he’s probably watching on that plane. and it’ll be giving everybody a lot to watch and adjust. Uh let’s take a look at by the numbers brought to you by our friends uh at Desert Financial Credit Union, Arizona’s number one credit union named by Forbes as uh we’ll take a look at them just here in a second. But they weren’t pretty, Stephen, in any way. And I’m going to share one thing that stood out to me over the last two games. Uh they have shot 30 for 37 from the free throw line. Los Angeles Clippers and Denver Nuggets combined are 61 of 68. You can’t give up a 31 point differential at the line uh and hope to have any chance to win a game. But why don’t you take a look at tonight’s numbers for us? Yeah, I’ll jump back to that after we get the numbers. Um, as you can see here, field goal percentage, you shoot 43% and you only get up four more attempts than your opponent that shoots 51.2% from the field. That’s not a recipe for success more often than not. Uh, the rebounding discrepancy, again, a barometer for this Suns team as far as physicality and their level of play. you lose that one, second night in a row that you’ve lost that one, that’s not going to bode well for a team that doesn’t have much margin for error. And then you put that in tandem with the the turnover number being high. They got to 19 turnovers on 24 assists. That’s not enough. That’s not enough. But to the point that you were bringing up before, you look at this Nuggets team as a team that tests you in certain types of ways and it allows you, like you said a little bit earlier, to just learn from learn about yourself, especially this early portion of the schedule. So, I’m imagining these these losses are going to be lessons for them, not to be looking at the other side of things and trying to flip it into a positive, but this is truly the information gathering segment of the schedule for all the teams outside of Oklahoma City. Yeah. And and before you say uh fk the roofs because uh they they did this in the free. No, there were a lot of dumb fouls uh over the last two nights that led to uh easy attempts for the opponents, right? And that’s that’s these are the little things though like a 31 point differential at the free throw line over two nights. You are not talented enough to overcome that. Even if you were playing at peak offensive output, even if you have Jaylen Green out there playing at at his peak offensively, you are not overcoming that kind of discrepancy at the free throw line uh while also giving up easy buckets, right? Like that’s that’s just not how you can win. not and this team has to be extremely disciplined uh to to not make these kind of mistakes and then to not, you know, if you’re only hitting 17 of your 50 three-point attempts again, you can’t you can’t have these other mistakes that add up, right? Because I mean, honestly, you you outshot Denver from deep. I mean, they only had nine threes to your 17, but all these other things become become extremely important. And you bring up the turnovers and on the other side of the break, I want to talk about those and Devin Booker’s role in those. Uh that’s coming up right after this. Got to tell you about our friends at Circle K. I love Circle K. Uh, it is the only place that I go for fuel. Not only for my car, but for my mind. My my daughter my daughter uh gave me that and I figured you know what let’s put it to use on a night that uh that we needed. Max Max, we did your work for you. You ain’t got to look no further. Go ahead and get that to him. Uh but to the point we were talking about before we came turnovers. Yes. Yes. Turnovers. But even before that, I had one last thing on the free throws. So I always talk about the Suns needing to play the game on their terms because the margin for error is just not there for them even if they’re fully healthy. It is quite literally impossible to play the game on your terms if an opponent is outshooting you to the free throw line, doubling you up across multiple games now back to back. That that means they’re playing the game on their terms. They’re slowing the game down. They’re keeping their defense set and they’re putting you in foul trouble. You just can’t afford that. Can’t afford it. No, you can’t dictate anything if if that’s happening. I mean, at that point, uh, you are dictating it simply because you’re creating your own issue by fouling them as much as you have, but yeah, you’re not going to wind up being able to do anything that you want to accomplish on either side of the floor. Uh, if you’re if you’re letting your opponent get to the line that much. But turnovers tonight, you mentioned 19 on the evening and Devin Booker with nine of them. He had the most by any Suns player by seven. Uh it was it was not pretty on that side of the ball. A lot of unforced errors, a lot of passes to nobody, dribbling the ball off legs tonight. Uh this is another situation where you can’t impose your will if you’re making it really easy to get the ball back for your opponent. Yeah, there’s a there’s a few things that there is quite literally no defense for. The number one at the top of that list, and I can hear Eritton saying, “Man, one of my coaches used to tell me that all the time.” live ball turnovers. There’s just no defense for that. There’s no defense for it. Again, when you have teams that take advantage of transition like the Clippers can, especially with Kawawaii and some of the other wings and obviously with Denver and the athletes they have and the passer they have and Joic with that, that’s a recipe for disaster because now you’re taking the ball out the net, their defense is set and they’re at home. So that a crowd feeds off of three things. Offensive rebounds, dunks in transition, and three-pointers made. You can get all of those in succession with one another when the team is being frugal with the ball. So, well, hell, they had a dunk not in transition. It was a half court uh alleyoop 360 dunk from Aaron Gordon and that was when you went, “Yeah, there’s a problem in the center there. That defense, like I said on Twitter, me and the Suns defense had something in common tonight. A soft middle. I mean, that is that’s what it came down to. like there was a lot of issues on that side of the ball, but Eritton, what did you make of the turnovers tonight and the unforced errors uh that this team has been uh having over the last few evenings? Stephen said it watching this game, I just heard my coaches yelling at me cuz no jump passes, stay on your feet. It was it was egregious some of the turnovers that we had. Yeah, I think I think that Devin Booker jump pass is really starting to piss me off quite frankly. We’ve seen it uh you know a few times already this season and usually just winds up in no man’s land with it and winds up throwing it away and that’s that’s the difficult thing here with this team is you know Devin has to be that guy right and if Devin’s the one making the errors you really don’t have a chance and everybody got on him about uh him shoot not shooting enough last night I mean he was efficient he had 31 points on uh 16 shot 16 shots uh tonight was nine and n from the free throw line, but those nine turnovers uh you know make it extremely difficult, next to impossible to be able to have this game be close at any point. Yeah, I’m not I’m not the anti-jump pass person, but I think the context and when you’re using it is important. And it feels like the times that he’s using it this season so far through these first three games, it’s more so him being caught in limbo than he’s jumping to create a better plane for the target that he’s trying to get to or have better vision at least. And that indecision when you’re already in the air, honestly, at that point, if if that is how you’re going to go about it, just come down with it like a receiver and take the travel. At least you get to keep your defense set. they don’t get to work and allow for that to stack plays and in a negative sense against you. So, if you’re going to go about it that way, I’m cool with it. Just don’t be conceding those live ball turnovers cuz those kill any drive any runs you’re on. I think they were on a close to double digit run late in the game and then he had one that kind of crept up on them and that’s just a buzz kill. It’s just kind of a record scratch where to Zack Low and you can’t really make up for those especially when you’re again conceding points and they scored on probably five or six of the turnovers that he had in today’s game. Yeah, that’s enough to stop any run or any type of momentum you’re trying to build. Uh Kevin in the chat had a question, Kev, uh up here about uh why do you uh do that when you have a wideopen shot at the basket? Where is Book’s mid-range uh shots gone? Is this a defensive thing that’s that’s forcing him away from those mid-range shots early, or is this him in that mindset that he has to be a distributor? because we have seen a lot of things run at him defensively, but from your eye when you’re looking at it from a play perspective and the way you break it down, how do you see that with him? Yeah, I mean it’s it’s hard to get to the midi if teams are loading the gaps on you. Some of it is them loading the gaps because they want to force him to pass the ball, but it’s kind of twofold because they’re also betting on the Sun spacers to knock down shots. They’re saying, “Gayson, we know you can shoot. Are you gonna keep taking these shots even if you’re not knocking down your first two or three? How is that going to play over the course of the game? Dylan Brooks, we know you like to take shots. Your efficiency hasn’t been to the extent where we want to not allow for you to take them. So, if you’re taking them and Devin’s not, then that’s a that’s a thumbs up for us and we live with the result.” Ryan Dunn, by all means, go ahead and take as many as you want. If OSO happens to be spaced because they’re doing some things defensively, which we’ll get to in a little bit. Obviously, he’s not shooting threes. So, that’s where it kind of it kind of hurts the Suns. That’s why you need the the the types of screens that we’re speaking to to be set a little further up the floor to give them a little bit more manipulation of space because it gets really congested when they’re trying to run their offense around the three-point line and Deon Booker can’t turn the corner because he’s getting double teamed and that person one pass away is standing right behind that guy that’s double teaming him. So, it’s it’s muddy. That’s the easiest way to put it, the cliffnose version. and it’s muddy and he can’t really turn corners. That’s why that blend of usage is important because when he’s off the ball, it’s harder to double team. It’s harder to load gaps and he kind of has a little bit more space to work with. Yeah. I mean, if you’re the opponent and you’re making the bet on letting the other guys shoot and doing that, you’re essentially playing a rigged poker game and it’s working out in your favor right now because let’s be honest, the other guys have not held up their end of the bargain. I mean, Dylan Brooks tonight was three of 13 from deep. Ryan Dunn, one of one of three. Uh, you’ve got Royce O’Neal two of six. Again, these guys have to hit shots if you’re going to win. And a lot of these were good looks. So, this is where the having you don’t have the talent, you know, that that that surefire going to knock it down all the time kind of sharpshooter. This offense is generating the looks that they’ve hoped for. They have not had the guys connect on those shots and and I think Book’s going to get a hard time because he’s not scoring more or he’s not hitting that mid-range. But you’ve got to look at, okay, some of these passes he did have where there weren’t turnovers. What kind of good look was it leading to and how are they not converting? I’d love to see the advanced metrics on that on guys that are getting a pass from Booker with an open look and missing because I’m guessing it’s a fairly high percentage so far and that’s also massively problematic. It is because there’s not going to be many other ways you can kind of navigate getting your offense. Any team if you if you take away player numbers and player habits and whatnot and you just say you have one player they can draw double teams in most context the player he operates in and he can generate catch and shoot threes for your offense. Any coach is going to say I’ll take that and you kind of find ways to manipulate it to whatever your team is. Like the catch and shoot three is the thing that’s valued as as much as anything outside of free throws and layups. They generate those at a high clip. Now it’s just a matter of knocking them down. And you don’t really have that much control over the ball going in from deep as much as you do with generating them. And I feel like that’s the half of it that you just kind of have to bet on. It’s a dice roll, if you will. Can Can we We can stop with the gambling. I’m fine with it. You afraid we’re going to have somebody break in and raid the place because we’re talking about it. Oh, no sweating, man. I’m just here for the basketball. Let’s Let’s talk about another piece of the basketball because we continue to see the comments in the chat and online. Oh, well, if you had a point guard, oh, if you started calling Gillespie, do you think that changes anything? Because it hasn’t always been Book bringing up the ball. Uh, and a lot of these turnovers are are after he he gets the ball. That’s not because he’s bringing it up. Does having a point guard in these situations change much about this that you’ve seen out there on the floor? Because to me, with the layman’s eye and then and that basketball uh perspective, I don’t see how it changes. No, no, it doesn’t change that much because if that person brings the ball up the court, guess who’s getting the ball for the action that they’re wanting to run to score? Deon Booker. So, who’s actually playing point guard? The point of the offense, the point of attack. That’s Devin Booker still. Yeah. Pass it to a guy who misses his open shot. That might be what happened, too. But that’s the that’s the that’s the point we’re getting at. You can put whoever you want out there. We saw about nine different Suns again in today’s game initiate the offense and it just led to something that involved Deon Booker as the primary option. Damn. So, it’s not going to change up too much. In fact, today it felt like we saw Deon Booker initiate more offense than either of the first two games. And obviously, it was with good reasoning with them trying to manipulate some things. But having a point guard in there is not going to change much. You just want somebody that’s going to be able to convert off the attention that he’s seeing at this point. Yeah, I think that’s where Jaylen Green helps when he comes in uh and is able to to be that second on the offense. It takes a little pressure off Dylan. So maybe those looks are different. Obviously, Grayson gets to go back to being that guy that that comes in and just primarily focuses on hitting those open shots. I think it shifts things. Does it fix everything? Hell no. But I think it it does go uh go at least a little bit of the way to helping that offense out. And I think the other part of that, too, is with with Jaylen, whether he’s getting a certain type of attention or he’s playing one-on-one, which might be some of the um might be some of the golden ticket of him playing with Devin Booker. That means that Jaylen is going to have free free space to operate in, but also if he happens to get extra attention. We saw it a couple of times with Grayson through these first three games. That means that Deon Booker is able to play off of closeouts or have somebody set him up to be a play finisher and doing it a little bit more of a sustainable manner. That’s part going to be very important. I’m sure Deon’s chomping at the bid for it no different than Jaylen is. Well, I also think with Jaylen, if he gets that ball and he has a little bit of space, it’s not necessarily that he’s automatically going to pull from three. Exactly. That’s where it leads to the uh crashing towards the rim as well. That either opens a secondary look for somebody on the wings or he gets to the bucket and that’s how you can cut down on the free throw discrepancy too because it’s putting pressure on the rim. right now you don’t have outside of book trying to get to the rim many people that can put the pressure on that and I think that’s another big part as to what Jaylen Green unlocks with this kind of group is that you get that uh and and you put the defense back on their heels a little bit more. Yep. Jaylen going to get a paint touch whenever he wants to, however he wants to is going to be very very important for this team. But that’s just one half of the saw for me because the other half is Mark Williams. when he’s playing and he’s rolling, you have to you have to account for him when he’s getting towards the basket. If you’re double teaming Deon Booker and Mark is rolling hard or he’s half rolling, that’s going to come with a certain type of attention. That’s a paint touch. You need other guys outside of Deon that’s generating those and no one else is really doing that again in a sustainable manner outside of him in his present state that we saw today. Well, and on the other end, now you have a guy that’s a true rim protector. It gives you that presence on the back half of the defense and in in essence missing two two of your five starters with Mark Williams and Jaylen Green. So if you’re if you’re already woe is me, all is lost after these last two games, there is a cavalry that’s going to come in at some point as well. And will it make them world beaters? No. But will it fix some of these glaring issues or at least help with it? Yes. And that’s when we can start judging. Uh because OSO isn’t that rim protector. He’s just not that guy, especially against big big guys that you’re going up against tonight. But just because it was difficult this evening. Just because it was a 22point loss doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a dude, the guy that went out there and at least made you go, you know what, that looked pretty good. It is a guy that we talked about. I’m sure he had nine turnovers, but this gentleman is our dude of the night. Brought to you by our friends at Heila River Resorts and Casinos. You do you at Hila River Resorts and Casinos. Visit playhila.com for more details. Devin Booker was the dude of the night and the dude abides as he had 31 points on 10 of 16 shooting. Had those nine free throws as well was perfect from the line uh as well. He has not missed uh like it’s like 40 straight free throws in against the Denver Nuggets. The dumbest stat I’ve ever heard. I thought for sure when they put it on the screen they were going to jinx him, but they didn’t. Uh he also added in seven assists and three rebounds. Yeah, he had those nine turnovers that we talked about, but I feel like uh that was a performance worthy of it because efficient scoring. He was aggressive at times uh when they when it felt like it was slipping away a bit in the second quarter. He did step up or late in the first and and kept it kept it close where people complained about that uh on Friday night. Again, not the greatest overall performance, but a pretty decent individual performance at least offensively for Deon Booker. Yeah, I like I honestly liked his game, especially on the offensive end today. Obviously, the turnovers are the turnovers. We already talked about that part, but it’s the the adjusting on the fly over the course of the game part. We talked about it with Eric yesterday about him testing the depth of the different coverages that he’s seeing. If you’re double teaming, cool. To what extent? If I take four dribbles, are you going to hold this double team and then we have this four on three that my teammates can play in or are you sending it outright to try to get me off the ball? And him kind of playing with the ball in his hands. This is a little bit of the Ricky Rubio and Chris Paul impact with them. Not just getting off of because you’re getting double team, but playing with the timing of it because the other four defenders around or the other three defenders around the double team that you have, everybody’s moving in accordance to what you do. If you make the same pass at the same time every time, they can get a beat on that and turn what should be an advantage for your teammates into disadvantage because they can anticipate what you’re doing. So, corner skip here. Hit the short roll here. hit the pass one time from one pass away, turning a corner at times, trying to split it at times. All of that stuff is very important. It’s like a literally like a quarterback. If you want to throw a post, you can’t throw at the same cadence every time. Sometimes you got to wait a little longer. Sometimes you do it earlier, but controlling the game like that is why he is the player that he is. And this was one of this was his best game of the season in terms of the controlling of the game part. Now it’s about putting it together without the turnovers. And that might change the difference in this game. Yeah, he is the dude of the night. Brought to you by our friends at Hila River Resorts and Casinos. And we’re going to be out at Hila River Resorts and Casinos, Wild Horse Pass on Monday, 6 PM tip for the game against the Jazz. We will be out there and you can join us out there as well. That’s 50% off your first year at monarch.com code phnx. And yeah, I am from Boston originally. Uh when I was I was born, I was there nine months and apparently that accent is hidden somewhere deep because Monach is not how you say it. Uh apparently. So I don’t Oso Igodaro uh is who we’re going to talk about next here on the on the program. Are we getting close to the end of the OSO experiment in terms of the starting lineup? uh even even if it’s not Mark at some point do you have to go with somebody a little more established like a Nick Richards uh until uh you know Mark Williams can take over that spot because I like Oso I like the intangibles but right now it feels like it’s more of a negative than a positive for you. So my my question and I would love for Ericton to chime in on this too. My question to that is, is it directly him or is it the some of the parts including him that are on the floor in those lineups that aren’t up to snuff in terms of the level of defense they’re playing at? Because for me, and I asked this question because if we’re talking about guys not being able to switch effectively, but also is doing a good job guarding a guy that’s trying to initiate that offense from that action. How much of that is on him? If those guys can’t protect the basket from cutters and different things like that going on around him when he’s guarding guys that are kind of at the point of attack like Jokic and Zubach a little bit, is that on him directly or is that on just the lineup construct and them just needing to be better collective? I I think it’s it’s it’s both things, right? It’s not it’s just it’s not one or the other right now. Sure, OSO can switch, but it’s not leading to to better defense right now. And yeah, is some of it those that are around him? Uhhuh. But you’re not going to be able to change a lot of that. Maybe Jaylen Green uh you know is obviously one change you’re going to make, but I don’t think that is going to dynamically change the things that you need change. What I would have liked to have seen Nick Richards starting tonight is because a little bit bigger body, a little bit more experience at that center spot when you’re going against a Jokic. Uh, and then, you know, it just obviously no Mark Williams at all tonight. Added another whole wrinkle into that, but I just feel like that spot has been problematic so far. Uh, just because OSO doesn’t have some of those intangibles that you need. Uh, but specifically the defense it for that part. Defense and then and then offensively the floaters not not working the way that you want. We haven’t seen any aggressive, you know, dunk or or moment like that from the dunker spot, which in part is teammates getting him the ball, but I haven’t seen it flash on either end. And that’s where, again, such slim margin for error. At some point, do you have to try something else? You hope it’s Mark Williams just slides into that starting spot. But how far away is the plan from being able to get on the court? And that’s my big thing. But Eritton, where do you weigh in on it? My biggest thing with Oso is that I feel like he hasn’t been facilitating as much as I would like him to. Um, my biggest thing with him coming into the season was he has special intangibles for a big guy and that intangible was his playmaking. And besides our cutting, which we have seen a little bit, we saw that more in this game. Besides the cutting, he’s not really facilitating. And that’s where it gets tough for me because I don’t know if that’s a personnel or a scheme issue, but I would just like to see him be able to kick out to a three-point shooter and have the three-point shooters knock him down. And I don’t know, I just feel like I haven’t seen that that much. Yeah, I definitely get where both of y’all are coming from with it. I think to the defensive side, no one’s been like outright good for them on defense. I think the best defender you would probably say has been Dylan Brooks for the intangibles that he’s kind of put on the game, but also the impact with the intangibles that we’ve seen in moments. Yeah, Ryan Dunn. Ryan Dun’s been Yeah. Outside of the the kind of untimely fouls, he’s been he’s been good as well. Yeah. But that’s that’s like the end of the list right now. That’s the tough part. I just don’t like I understand also has a certain ceiling, but I feel like his ceiling can’t be met if the some of the parts around him aren’t all playing to the best of their ability as well. And that’s not to exclude him from it because he’s not without without, you know, reason within that too. But I don’t know, it’s just a little bit of a catch because it feels like they’re leaning into it a little more with him at the five than I thought they would. And that obviously comes with the basket being a little bit more open for opponents. But don’t don’t you accept that the ceiling would be lower if you put Niger Richards in that spot, but you also know that the floor is probably slightly higher on average with it on on both ends of the court because it’s a very simple on on offense. It’s stand in that dunker spot, get a rebound or get the pass. Like that’s that’s what you’re going to set a good screen. Like those are the things he has to has to worry about in terms of it. And if you’re trying to use Oso as like a hub uh in some ways, I think it’s almost too much for him to do when he’s trying to figure out all those other things that you need him to do as well. And the defense again has been such a problem near the rim right now. I just wonder if if mixing that up a little bit would be better. I’m guessing Mark Williams may get the start on Monday if if they feel like he can go 25 minutes, but I don’t I don’t know. I I don’t quite understand what what they’re doing and how they’re using that. And I I think you’re putting a lot of undue pressure on OSO to be that guy right now when I’m not sure he’s ready to be that guy. I think he could be that backup, but to be that guy with a starting unit that needs so much right now, I don’t know. It’s a tough one for me. It’ll be it’ll be a very interesting thing to watch starting lineup wise on Monday because they’re starting three sevenfooters. Kyle Filipowski, well, he might be just barely below it. Larry Markin is like right there on the cusp of being a footer and Walker Kesler is naturally like 71. So that’s one of the tallest front court trios in the starting lineup since that you see outside of the outside of the Houston Rockets and what they got going on right now. So if ever we’re going to see some change, it might be that point against the Utah Jazz, but there’s some trade-off there because if Mark Williams is out there and we talk about Utah, we’ll get to the preview when we get there, but there’s a lot of movement with that team. Those guys are all spacing five out. So if he’s not comfortable defending space or getting out to the three-point line to close out, there’s some kind of push and pull that comes there. So it’s a little bit of a catch. There’s no perfect we take something away and we automatically solve everything. I think we all understand that part. No. So it’s just about whose strengths or weaknesses you can kind of push forth more or kind of mitigate to benefit the rest of the team. Eritton, did you have something you wanted to add to this part of the conversation? All right. Well, I saw you raise your hand. I was trying to get you. I uh I threw the ball away. I I think that’s my eighth jump. The jump the jump pass. It was a jump pass. Yep. I just hung in the air. He waved his hand like I’m open and I jumped up and then he wasn’t open. So, there’s that going on. Uh I want to get to the play of the night, the love the play by our friends over at Arizona Lottery. Uh make sure uh that you love the play brought to you by them. Uh you can play and get gifts from the Arizona Lottery. Great scratchers tickets and everything. as well from them. Tonight for me, we brought up Ryan Dunn. It was that block that he had on Tim Hardaway Jr. that was the play of the night to me. It was a fantastic defensive play. The one the one and probably only play at the rim that went in the Suns favor tonight. It was it was a pretty block and it helped us learn the fun fact that apparently Tim Hardaway senior played on the Nuggets for 14 games once. So, we got that going. Yeah, Ryan Ryan’s been Ryan’s been getting after it defensively. Obviously, there’s some give and take. There’s some untimely fouls, but when he’s ri protecting and he’s putting that putting that athleticism together with a certain type of discernment, it hits for this team that needs that type of rim protection. And again, he’s providing it when he needs it. Um, this like his second or third kind of sensational type of block, not just a glance and blow like a emphatic rejection type of block. That’s something that he’s very capable of, especially if we’re looking at him at the peak of his defensive powers. Yeah, that that was a man that got in the elevator, hit the 11th floor and and did that like a man. That was that was a no doubter. Uh and the video is great. There’s a fantastic photo of that block. Like that was the kind of block that you were hoping defensively he would be the guy to deliver. Yeah, still rough around the edges, but moments like that give me a lot of hope that that he can actually live up to that defensive potential and provide us some entertainment on that end for sure. Yeah, that’s what he has to be for this team and it’s all about streamlining it. Make it a consistent thing and then he’ll take those steps forward that they need from him. What What are they debating in the chat? I’ve seen Arizona out of Africa. What are you guys talking about in the chat? We’re sitting here breaking down ball like you’ve never heard on this program. giving the people what they’ve asked for. Real intelligent basketball talk and not screaming about Suns must wins and uh and you’re talking about Arizona in the chat. Eritton, what what the hell is going on? I mean, it is a good spot. I mean, I’m not knocking Arizona. No free ads. Uh but you know, I just I I look up and that’s what’s going on in the chat. You know, that and hello is giving me [ __ ] Sometimes you need to tell the people where they need to go to disconnect if they get to that point. We are where you go to disconnect. I I I brought on a freaking a freaking puppet tonight to read ads to you people. Right. Melissa said they can they can multitask. I don’t know. I’ve seen some of our sons fans. I’m not 100% sure on that. The only I just you you guys. Jeez. I do have a question for you guys though. Like yeah, what is it? Out of Africa or wild world wildlife zoo? What’s my favorite? We’re bringing it back to basketball. All right. What’s that? With the big uh roster that the Utah Jazz have, do you think that we could potentially see our first double big lineup of the Jordan era? Or is it too premature for that still? What do you guys think about personnel and just running the double big in general? I don’t think they’re at a point to do that yet. Uh just because are you who are the two you’re running? Kaman’s not ready. Uh you know, is it Nick Richards and Oso? Does that is that compelling enough? Is there enough offense there? Because I I think when you have double big, you have to have at least one guy that can shoot and Oso isn’t that guy. And you know, Nick really isn’t that guy. So then you’re hoping, okay, is it Mark and uh and Oso maybe, but you have such limited minutes right now. I don’t know. You might be forced into it, but I don’t know if if if Oso and Mark if it’s going to happen for long periods of time on Monday. Yeah. my my question for everybody. So when you talk about double bigs and you look at the teams that have been effective in using it, Houston comes to mind more than anybody else. That kind of set the reset the trend from what used to be early 2000s basketball. Why does it work though? You look at Alfred and Shenon. That’s a all world center. That’s a Nola Joic. That’s baby Joker. That’s what Joic himself called him. You can put anybody next to him, he’s gonna make it work. So that’s why they can go against Stephen Adams and Clint Capella and play either one of those two with them and make it work. It’s not just the Bruiser is going after rebounds and matching for size. It’s not the original Twin Tower of Exactly. They’re dictating to opponents because they’re forcing you to react or you’re going to have to concede those second chance opportunities, which is what they use to their advantage the latter half of last season and then into the playoffs against the Warriors. Bam. Everybody doesn’t have that. Obviously, Denver can use it in capacities and uh there’s a couple other teams in the league that have it. Um New York Knicks as well, but that’s again a complimentary one. You have a a paint laden big and and Mitchell Robinson and a perimeter dweller in and Carl Anthony Town. So, it’s a natural kind of pair in there. Suns don’t have that. If they’re using double bigs, they’re doing it in reaction to somebody. It’s not something that’s coming natural for them. They’re putting pressure on. It’s not an advantage correct for them. It’s it’s like you said, reacting to what is an advantage for somebody else. And how much do you want to deviate from your process when you only have but so much margin for error trying to match what someone else is doing? Like I’d almost rather swing the other way. That’s the That’s the That’s the chess match right there. Crazy. Exactly. Uh can we go to Peter’s breakdown of of me uh here for a second? It’s up a little further. Uh great scouting report by uh by Peter tonight. He says this was a role. He’s the humor guy uh who sometimes goes off. Maybe he’s like Oso. He has some skills. I don’t know. I’ve been told I don’t and uh that’s uh you know. So, thanks for the scouting report though. The OSO and I do have one thing in common. Both kids from Chandler, but other than that, zero zero in common other than that. So, uh but good breakdown on me there. Uh I I don’t know. Shout out Shout out to the people in the chat talking to theirelves. I’mma leave that at that. I Yeah, I mean you got it. And I’mma give you five seconds. That’s all you get, though. It’s real cute, though. It’s really It’s really cute. It’s really cute. Oh, yeah. You know, that’s that’s the joy of some of this. A lot of people a lot of people like, “Oh, you got an easy job.” I’m like, “You try to sit there and do your job with a scrolling live commentary of everything.” Could you imagine an accountant sitting there with a scrolling live commentary about what they’re doing? You sure that number goes there in that cell? You suck at those uh at those equations that you’re putting into that Excel sheet. Man, you look dopey. You you gain some weight, bro. Like, could you imagine if that was going on at a regular office job? Like, like, oh man, that no, you could not imagine that, you know? So, yeah. I just also I I do enjoy that uh the raven shots that people take at you. No, it’s it’s it’s fun right now. Y’all kick Hey, kick me while I’m down. I’m I’m chilling. I’m chilling. I I honestly I don’t care if there’s haters in the chat. It’s half the fun of it. Uh I also enjoy the Ravens hate, so we can keep that going. Yeah. Well, of course you do. Yeah. No surprise. You You shut your mouth, Steelers fan. All right. I’m still waiting for San Antonio Holmes’s second foot to come down. Uh, so you can shut up about the Steelers. All right. Uh, any final thoughts on this game? Any thoughts as we go into the Utah game because the next time we will talk to the good people of the chat and the interwebs is Monday in the pregame show. So, uh, what do you think? Yeah, the big thing for me is them just getting back in alignment with the things that they held most important for their team. There we go. I was waiting for it. There you go. U, and that’s the defensive rebounding. But the defensive rebounding comes from playing good defense that forces a stop that allows for you to play in transition or at least in the open floor if not outright transition. And then attacking the offensive glass being that team that’s more physical than your opponents. They got to get back in alignment with doing that for a full 48 minutes. If they don’t, I’m not sure they get a win on this road trip. You don’t want to have gone 0 for three on this entire thing. One for one for two is already or one one and two is not what you wanted. It’s not ideal, but you take that going back home against going up against Utah again on Friday, like you said, as well as having Memphis on Wednesday. Yeah, I I agree. I think that you’ve you’ve got to figure out how to put together a complete 48 minutes on Monday, not these these, you know, waves of, oh, okay, I can see it, and then these long swaths of not being able to do much of anything. Uh what are your what’s your take Aritin as we go into it uh for for Monday? It is game three of 82. That’s my takeaway. Uh I mean what the duck position is basketball. Sorry. Somebody said somebody said uh nookie monsters turned into serious analysts. So I was gonna attempt it. One one last thing. We’ll wrap it up on this as we’re coming up to the end of the postgame show. But does the concept of positionless basketball work with the roster that you currently have? It is a bit of a land of misfit toys right now with you’ve got talent, you’ve accumulated guys, there’s young talent that’s got to learn. Can can it work together and can it work in a positionless basketball sense? I don’t think the Suns have a positionless basketball style of roster because having a positionless roster means that you probably have a starting caliber sensor that can play another position whether that’s playing like the four or potentially the three in some lineups or being a kind of point guard in a sense not necessarily bring it up the court but making plays for your team in the half court. I don’t think the Suns have that to that extent so it’s a little different for them. um that’s not really a strength that from their roster template that they have. So now I don’t see positionless in their roster context, but if you take a center off the floor and you start playing with more smalls like we’ve seen them go to a couple of times the last two games, Nigel playing against Tunis at one point tonight, they have some elements that they can get to with it, but just how sustainable is that? I wonder if those small ball lineups are something that they’re keeping in mind or they’re going to test the waters on morphs. This is just kind of see how the game goes and we might have to throw something different out there just to kind of reverse the ties for us. Uh did I miss anything in the chat? Are we now talking about uh going on trips to foreign countries? Are we discussing the finer points of is Chicago or New York a better metropolitan city? Uh where are we right now? I mean, I’ I’ve seen Purple Pants brought up, but we can’t get into that. The wife’s here now. So, yeah, we we wrapped up all the other stuff. I think we’re we’re back to basketball and All right. Well, I think I got all the sponsors. If I didn’t, I’ll hear about it on Monday. And there may be double reads on Monday, but I think that is everything. And hey, I’ll say this. At least we’re not right now. They were feeling it in a certain way. Uh is the joy of of having no expectations. Yes. Peter Peter had a question a little bit earlier in the chat. Is it about my lack of talent again or No, he he switched the topic. He’s talking basketball. He’s asking about the offensive rebounds. I won’t talk about it here. I’ll direct you to the latest Steven study that came out. I think it was Wednesday Eritton Tuesday, this past week. U Tuesday. Yeah. uh coming from preseason, but looking at why that’s something that they’re looking to make an advantage for them, a margin that they can kind of make up for a lack of talent by imposing their force and will against opponents. So, you can go to this very channel, our PHNX Sports channel, go to the videos tab, and you’ll see a Stephen study within a scroll or two. Go click on that and I got about seven or eight minutes talking about specifically that for you. Check it out. It is fantastic. You’ll want to watch all those Steven studies. they will make you a smarter basketball uh person. Uh I promise you that is the case. Uh it’s the only way I’ve kind of learned how to talk the actual game this year. So, thank you for that. My dumb jokes uh are only 95% of the time. By the way, Corey, you’re wrong. It’s New York. But I’ll leave it at that. And I probably just upset the entire chat, including my wife. We’ll wrap it up there. So, she said it’s not that dire yet. So, yet entails for the purple pants. Yeah. So, yet entails that there is a chance. I’m going to say this, at some point they will make an appearance. I’m not saying they’ll be wearing them, but they’ll make an appearance here on the program. I promise. We going to retire him and hang them in the raft. I threatened to do that last year when we when we said we were done with it. That is another PHNX Suns postgame in the books after a 13311 loss at the hands of the Denver Nuggets in the Mile Cry City. Uh you can follow the man behind the Mac. Uh the guy that can dunk, a guy that is uh you know had his had his mouse die mid show. Uh couldn’t pull up a graphic and we stalled like professionals would. It is the freckled Mamba Ericson. You can follow him at the freckle mamba. You can follow the man, the professor, the smartest man talking basketball right here. Stephen at StevenPG3. You can follow whatever the hell I am at Espo. You can follow the show at phnx_sons. And remember, yeah, they’re one and two, but what did you really expect? You thought they weren’t going to win more than 35 games anyways. Oh, [Music] [Applause] we all silly like the mayor.

The Phoenix Suns struggled in the second game of a road back-to-back, losing 133-111 in the Mile High City of Denver.
Already with out Jalen Green (recovering from a hamstring strain), the Suns also learned they’d be without Mark Williams due to injury maintenance.
They’d see 31 points from Devin Booker, including 9-for-9 from the free throw line, but no other Suns player was able to crack 20+ in what needed to be a higher scoring effort.
They also had their hands full in defending the Nuggets, conceding the aforementioned 133 points on 51.2% from the field.

Bigs seem aloof or lost. I hope they can find some pride because the bigs have potential. Another problem I see, when Book is doubled the ball doesn't know where to go.
You said the suns is better without kd, but last season the suns were 8-1 before kd injury.
Suns problem is the same noooooooooooo defense
Any update on Green ?
Booker can not be turning the ball over 9 times!!! He should have only 2-4 turnovers
Need to stop with the positionless basketball! We need a point guard and Booker needs to go back being SG!!! Fleming needs to play more at power forward, instead of hays Davis
Denver fan here. Insanely impressed with the ball knowledge and real discussion. No fluff. Will be a consistent viewer from here on out.
BOOKER GOTTA STEP IT UP MENTALLY
The Suns need a primary playmaker. Book is at his best as the secondary ball handler and primary scorer. Get him a pg. Not Goodwin/Gillespie they're 3rd string guards at best. Get a starting caliber point guard.
nuggets fan here i love yall two! I miss the other goats! And glad that middle guy who just yells aint here! ❤
Ok, the Suns have improved their defense this year? Really? Tonight marks the first time in NBA history an team has allowed 70+ points in the first half for three straight games to open a season (or consecutively at all, based on records). Fake news!!
Booker is about to ask for a trade.
Good commentary. Suns need to step up the defense intensity and improve the helping defense schemes. I agree with your assessment about a lack of communication on defense. It's going to be a long season as it takes time to develop the younger players.
They are terrible team I say they are worst record in nba this year
I gotta say, as a Nuggets fan, that Jokic and some of the other Nuggets just brought some weird chippy energy to this matchup that I personally did not mess with. Hopefully they come out with a more mature mentality going forward
