THE DETROIT RED WINGS PULL OFF A LEGENDARY COMEBACK OVER THE ST LOUIS BLUES
Can you believe what we just saw? I’m not going to lie. I’m like bouncing around here. Montreal and Vancouver. There’s 2 minutes 48 seconds left in that hockey game, which is primarily taking my television screen time. I’ve been bouncing around between that and the Blue Jays and seeing what’s going on over there and the Detroit Red Wings. Oh my gosh, what was that? All doom and gloom and no sadness to spare for all of Detroit, Michigan watching this Red Wings hockey game. Down 4 nothing at the start of the second period. Are you kidding me? All it took was 3 minutes and the first period, so 23 total minutes for the Red Wings to get down 4 nothing to the St. Louis Blues. But the final score of the game, 64 Detroit. That’s right, baby. The Detroit Red Wings have scored six unanswered goals today to get themselves the win in regulation. What a choke for the ages by the St. Louis Blues. And you know what’s even more impressive to me? It’s the fact that this was a sixgoal comeback by Detroit. And you know who didn’t end up getting any points in this one? Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin, Nor Morates Cider hit the score sheet today, which I was admittedly a little bit disappointed about because yeah, Lucas Raymond’s on my fantasy team. Yeah, say what you want about whether or not he’s actually playing healthy right now in any way. But still, he went out there. He played himself. How many minutes did Lucas Raymond have? 20 minutes and 16 seconds time on ice. Dylan Larkin led the forwards in nice time with 2158. They’re both a plus one, but they didn’t have any points. This was a game by committee. When you look at who it is that got the wings up on the board, what defenseman were going out there and scoring some meaningful points. Shout out to you Simone Edinson for getting two extremely important goals in this one. The gamewinner and the empty net there. What an incredible span of about 20 minutes this was for the Detroit Red Wings to storm back and take control of a game that nobody nobody thought they had a chance to come back from. This is the fifth Detroit Red Wings fourgoal comeback of all time. The most recent one December 28th, 2022 versus the Pittsburgh Penguins. They were also down 4 nothing in that one. They won 5-4 in OT. There were a bunch of other ones, but they were in the 80s, the ‘7s, and the ’60s. So, this is the first time ever that the Detroit Red Wings have pulled off two fourgoal comebacks in the same decade, which is quite ridiculous when you think about it. I mean, like, what team wants to go out there and say they’re capable of pulling off four goal comebacks? It’s like, yeah, you don’t want to admit that you’re going down by four goals in a hockey game, but that’s what the Wings did because the Blues took advantage quickly. You could say what you want about John Gibson, but we can go over St. Louis and what they were doing in this one to get things started. First goal, it was Jimmy Snugarude over to Cam Fowler at the point who then takes his sweet time. Throws it back over to Jordan Kyu who walks in with a snipe and beats John Gibson over the shoulder. You want to see Gibson make a save on that one. He just kind of looked frozen. Not the best look, but it was on the power play, so I get it. If there’s a time for St. Louis to score, it’s probably then. Give it about five minutes and then you have yourselves Jake Neighbors getting the two nothing goal assisted by Robert Thomas and Justin Faulk. It’s a really really nice play where Robert Thomas goes across to the backside. Justin Faulk then streaks right in, tosses it to the back door and Jake Neighbors is there to put the puck in the back of the net. It’s a really nice tic-tac-toe cross crease to cross crease play. It’s hard to blame the goalender for that one. It’s such a directional lateral type of goal, but it’s a two nothing lead either way for the St. Louis Blues. And that carries into the second period where just one minute in, you have Pavl Buchavic getting himself the three nothing goal, it’s Dylan Holloway who curls over the faceoff circle, tosses it towards the goal, and Buchavic is there to tip it in. Again, not a difficult play to see coming. Like this is a pretty standard NHL power play maneuver with the forward circling around taking shots and then guys in the middle getting the tips in front. But you got to be able to box that guy out. It’s very difficult for your goalender to be able to make saves on those kinds of plays consistently. And it’s 3 nothing St. Louis because of it. Give it two more minutes and you have Jake Neighbors getting his second of the game assisted by Robert Thomas and Jimmy Snugarude. Really nice Robert Thomas spinning pass out there in front. Finds itself over to Neighbors and he makes no mistake. He beats Gibson five hole. Gibson came out to challenge, but then again, it’s like, hey, he was one-on-one with the shooter after the play had already leaned over to the Robert Thomas side of the ice. You just totally see the Red Wings lose their composure defensively and lose their assignments. neighbors should not be all by himself one-on-one against John Gibson, but he was. And at this point, the St. Louis Blues were up four nothing. And Red Wings fans were starting to feel hopeless. But then, you know, 4 minutes later, the Red Wings on a power play of their own, Tion Bergrren, who ends up getting a really interesting goal. Okay, nice. Andrew Cop fed it to him and Bergen makes the really nice snapshot to put it through. Cross crease plays generally do well in the NHL. So nice to see that. Also, Axel Santine Pelica got his first assist of the year. So that’s nice. And then just about 10 minutes later with about two something to go in the period, you get yourselves EMTT Finny, who ends up scoring an unassisted goal off of a very weird St. Louis turnover in their own zone. Dylan Larkin is down low for checking. So the St. Louis guy behind the goal line tries to chip it up the middle. It misses the two St. Louis Blues in front and instead EMTT Finny pounces on that, chops the puck forward and it beats Jordan Bennington, bringing the lead down to two. And then just 21 seconds later, you have the Red Wings striking yet again. It’s JT Comfort with a tip in in front from a point shot done by Travis Hamnick of all people. Like what in the world? It’s Travis Hamick committing to the offense here. Comfort right in front is able to get a goal and bring the lead to one at the end of the third period. Two goals in 20some seconds for Detroit. At this point, you’re starting to get a little bit excited if you’re a Red Wings fan. And St. Louis fans are kind of starting to panic. Okay, wait a minute. We just gave up three goals in the span of about however many minutes. Are we going to be able to hold on to this lead? Well, no, because in the third period at the halfway mark, Blue’s still up four to three. You have Alex Debrinket who takes the puck in the Red Wing zone. He intercepts a pass going to the opposite wing. He charges down the neutral zone, cuts back into the middle in the offensive zone, and then just fires. A beautiful wister by Jordan Bennington. That’s his first goal of the year. It took him so long, and he’s been getting a bunch of assists, but to Brinket finally gets on the board and it’s a 44 tie. And then just 30 40 seconds later after that it’s Simone Edmonson who throws a puck from nowhere he loss one towards the goal and it beats Jordan Bennington. It’s a weird kind of knuckle puck looking shot and I mean the puck takes a weird bounce it looks like off the St. Louis guy in front. It beats everybody and the Red Wings have a 54 lead. JT Comfort gets the assist there, too. Nice to see Comfort getting up on the board. And then Simone Edinson gets the empty net. He’s in his own zone. Throws a puck long range down to the opposite goal. 6-4 hockey game. That’s his third goal on the season and second of the night. Simone Edmonson. and the Detroit Red Wings face themselves a seemingly insurmountable mountain to climb that they end up conquering on this day. Detroit also came back from a 4-0 deficit against Pittsburgh in December 2022. I was at that game.
Wrong. Larkin had a point (assist to Finnie)
i was in a sports bar watching this and the michigan/msu football game. i exploded when we took the lead 5-4.
I was excited after the first Detroit goal lol by the 3rd goal I was yelling non stop until the end of the game
I'm going to say something very controversial. The Icelandic players didn't grow up like the Canadians and Americans who had dreams of winning a cup.. they play like they just want to win a game. Until they become hungry and what more than anything to hoist that cup we're going to see struggles with them.
Was at the game.. Little Caesars Arena was rocking.. me and my whole family went.. my kids had a blast hearing the alarm go off that many times. It was awesome.
4 goals just to tie blues 5 goals to take the lead show some love lego! lol 🤭😊👍
I almost put money on the W after Berggren scored because I just felt that was a sign. If Bergs is scoring then anything can happen. Im wondering what the live odds were right now. Probably 10:1
