And I got to tell you, man, we’ve been talking about the excitement of the season. I woke up this morning, open up my phone, I saw several accounts saying the Chicago Blackhawks play hockey today on my for you page. I know we tweeted something out like that from our account. There’s an excitement around this team. Actual excitement. Actual excitement that people are they’re waiting for another game to happen. They’re excited when game day is here. Let’s go. This is what we’ve been waiting for for three freaking years. My Uber driver coming into work today was talking about the Blackhawks and how he thinks this is the new generation of like the Hawks winning cups type of team. He was like very excited about drivers been listening to the CHDO Blackhawks. Well, he was asking like what I was doing and so we we were just talking about it and he was like, “Oh, the Hawks team is like so excited about.” Hey, man. I I’m I’m telling you, your Uber driver, Windy City Hockey, Probably. I’m telling you, like this this city is is buzzing for this team to be hashtagback. And I I I think we’re we’re close. I think we’re closer than we’ve ever been since at least CHGO’s been around. um that this that this team has that that excitement about it. You know, you you it’s it’s still early in the season, seven games in, but you know, the way it looks, the way it feels is so much different. Um and the record is is resemblant of that. All losses were onegoal losses. Uh and the wins have been against teams that you want to see them beat. We talked about, you know, coming into this season, what do they look like against Anaheim? you know, what do they look like against St. Louis, Utah, Nashville, uh, Seattle? Like, how do they look against these teams that you’re trying to stack up against? And you got some wins against those teams and you got some close games against the other ones, too. So, I think this will be a game. You talk about like, you know, measuring stick tests. This will be a game where, you know, you you don’t look at the records because the Lightning have a unexpected record, but so do the Blackhawks. So you you go you go by what you see in this game specifically and and and just take it to the next one and then as we get throughout the season, then you can kind of take some more big chunk uh evaluations of of different teams. All right, here are your lines for tonight. We have Conor Badard centering Tyler Batusi and Lucas Reichel. about that. Riel gets the uh the job on the first line with uh with Ilia. Jesus Andre Burkovski. I was going to go to Illy McKay. Um yeah, Burkossky’s wife had a baby so he’s on paternity leave. Congratulations to them. Nazar centering Terrain and McKay Green with Doc and Donado. Slagert and Felino make up your twothirds your fourth line and they’re going with seven defenseman again. Blic Renzel, Kaiser, Lefchov, Grizzlick, Murphy, Crevier, Spencer Knight gets a starting goal. And those those forward lines will will rotate. Um yesterday, uh at practice, we saw that Colton Doc was on that third line. And then today’s morning skate, Sam Laughaferty was on that spot, but then Ben Pope, who is in Tampa, uh said all indications look like Laferty is going to be scratched again. So, and one minute ago, he confirms that. So, 100% that is correct. Uh huge opportunity for Lucas Reichel. Um we have been pining for him to get this look, to get some time with Connor Bard, to get some top six minutes. Has he earned it? Sure. Sure. Had a really good game a couple days ago, a couple games ago. Um I’m I’m excited to see him get a look here and see what he can do. And I think the result that he has tonight, even if he doesn’t have a multi-point game or score a goal or get on a score sheet, this is a really good opportunity for him to show this coaching staff and to show this front office like if you give me opportunity, I will make the best of it. I feel like too often with Lucas, when he’s been given these opportunities, he has sort of fumbled them. I hope he takes this one by the throat cuz look, if you can turn Lucas Reichel in to a 35 45 point guy, which isn’t too much to ask. If you can add that to the already the crop of what you have, that is a crop crop. Yeah, that’d be nice. Not only does it help the team now when Bavar and Fondell and those guys arrive and teams come a call and you could say, “Hey, look at look what Lucas Reichel did when given this opportunity on this team.” Even with some, you know, with the hanging over his head that he might be traded, that he’s not really in the future plans, he still delivered. Gives him more value than he would have had two, three weeks ago. So, a big opportunity for like Riel in a lot of regards here. Yeah. and and that that’s a spot that when you talk about the rotation of the forwards group, you’re likely to say that Baddard and Donado probably stick together and you know you rotate through guys. But if Riel comes out with a good start to the game, then you might see him get more opportunity and him probably stick around with Bard a little bit more. But yeah, it’ll we’ll we’ll we’ll see. I’m I I have tempered expectations for what Lucas Reichel uh will be able to do, but I’m I’m hoping that he, like you said, he does take advantage of this opportunity to play with Connor Bard and play with Rand, play on the top line, and have those uh assignments early on and not get lost in the shuffle of the of the forwards group. But it’s it’s possible. I think the best thing for him will be um be noticeable in a good way. like like you said, you don’t have to put up two goals or have a bunch of assists. You don’t have to have a big point game, but be noticeable. Do the right because that’s that is what we’re seeing other players do that are kind of in that, you know, mix of like these are the forwards that’ll kind of rotate and get different opportunities. Maybe it’s bottom six, whatever it is. Um, that’s what we’re seeing makes a difference with Jeff Blash and his coaching staff is are you playing the way that we are expecting you to play, we’re asking you to play, doing the right things with, you know, the the small details of the game, playing off the puck, or are you getting lost in the shuffle of the game and therefore you’re less effective? Like, be be noticeable in a positive way. You know, finish your checks. uh be be tough in in puck battles, play with speed, play just play with engagement off the puck. Like that is not only for Lucas Reich, but for everybody else, but especially for a guy like Lucas Reichel, that’s going to be a big way to like make a spot for yourself in the lineup night in and night out and not hope that, oh, maybe someone’s hurt or you know, whatever. Then I can get like go and go and take a spot by by playing that way. I always go back to when Andrew Shaw joined the Blackhawks and this sticks with me forever is he was called up with Dylan Olsen who was a decently not like a you know Levino Renzel level prospect but a decently thought like a Ethan Mastro first round pick. Yeah. Okay. So a Noah Allen level prospect, right? Everyone was excited when he called up and also Andrew Shaw was called up fifth round pick and it was like all right well this kid’s coming up somebody I forget who it was that was heard and he’s going to get an opportunity to play a couple games maybe drop the gloves and then go back and once Andrew Shaw was given an opportunity he never let it go he never went back to Rockford he said I am oh you’re calling me up I am not I am never going to be again ever I’m never eating there again in my life I am staying in Chicago I’m going to Chicago cut I’m going to RPM steak that’s my life now take it from me. Watch it. You know what I mean? And Riel does not have the personality Andrew Shaw does, obviously, but this is really his last chance. You’ve got this window open for you where Burkovsky’s out. Jacinson’s banged up. They don’t want to play Sam Laferty. So, apparently not. Get take Lucas take this opportunity and win this job. win this win this chance to just even if it’s not to stay on the top line a chance to stay in the lineup and be one of those guys who when we imagine who the 11 or 12 forwards are going to be every game that Lucas Riel is a guy that we know is in there in there in Sharpie permanently all the time that’s what we want to see from Lucas Reichel tonight and again it doesn’t necessarily have to be a hat-tick or four assists or whatever it’s got to be just a solid 60-minute performance from him and I think we’ll see as the minutes play out and as the opportunity play off for Riel, how Jeff Flashel thinks it’s going. So with that, why don’t we hear from the Blackhawks head coach who met the media after today’s morning skate? Brandon Hegel about um working with you for the past three years here and he said he had a pretty unique relationship with him and talked to him a lot away from the rink and everything and what was that like? Uh you know he I love Hags as a as a guy number one. on it. He’s a he’s a great great person and um you know you end up kind of as an assistant coach we we all had different players that that we worked with and so he was one of the guys that I worked with on a regular basis and I think that that relationship grew beyond just hockey and um you know um in in in a good way. He’s a he’s a great great dude. I I really enjoyed my time with uh uh with him and and honestly you know I think when you work with guys like that they help make you better coaches and uh and he certainly did. it seems like you’re able to have a little bit more direct personal relationship with guys as an assistant than as an head coach. How did you kind of go about that transition of how to approach that? Yeah, I mean I I think you what I’ve learned over the years I and it’s probably changed over time is is really honestly you have to develop a personal relationship with players first. And and I think if you develop a personal relationship with them, uh, then you can coach them hard when you need to coach them hard and because they know that you’re in the fight with them and and so it’s probably, you know, from the my my first year’s coach, head being a head coach, even going back to junior till now, it’s it, you know, I think that part of it’s changed probably a little bit and um and I’ve adapted. So, I think you can, you know, the relationships certainly might be different and you might spend more one-on-one time with players as an assistant. um which you know I I we we I certainly did here in Tampa, but I still think it’s important in my role here to make sure that that you know I have uh relationships with the players and uh you know that started when I got the job and continue through the summer so that when you know we do as head coaches have to hold them accountable and have some of those hard conversations at least uh you have a good understanding of where each other’s coming from. Then on a different note, I feel like a couple times so far this year you brought up guys ice time and thinking that oh, you know, in retrospect that was a little too high and everything. It seems like you think a lot about ice time distribution and review that closely. I is that true? Like do you feel like maybe more than average coach you do pay close attention to that sort of thing? I I can’t necessarily speak for the for other coaches, you know, like I I just know like it’s something that I think um in in a one game thing, it’s not a big deal, but just over the course of the season, um I think you have to watch, you know, how much uh stress you’re putting on players and and um you know, every guy’s unique. Every guy’s different, everybody’s bodies are different, but I just want to make sure I’m managing that, especially uh you know, we have some young defenseman. Um, so it’s going to be important with those young defenseman that that we don’t uh stress their their uh physi physicality too much where all of a sudden, you know, come a month from now they don’t have any energy. And and when you’re playing 11 forwards, uh same thing. You know, we don’t want to stress our our top guys so much that they don’t that they don’t have energy. I don’t necessarily know that it means it will, but just something I want to be conscious of and work with our uh our group to make sure that that we keep them uh as fresh as they can be. in sports. I feel like the the context we hear about that the most is like baseball bullpens and pitcher usage. The do you see any commonality to how you approach it to to that? Uh I honestly I’m I’m an average baseball guy so I can’t I can’t I can’t speak to that. Uh I you know I think more that’s more like a specific usage of of your arm, you know, where this is more just your overall physical kind of load on your body. So, I I don’t think it’s quite the same, but I just think it’s something that you have to manage and watch and and and honestly, I think most most coaches are aware of it. Most staffs, management staffs are aware of it. I was talking to Frank Nazar and he said, he’s working on his first few steps kind of on the back check. Is that something you’ve talked to him about with wanting to improve? Uh, it’s something I’ve talked to our whole team about from day one. um how important that is to to make sure that we become a great you know I use the word reload but great reload team that our first three steps as soon as the puck transfers really either offensively or defensively you want to win that transition race and certainly from a defensive standpoint it makes you really hard to play against I think if we can use our speed as a defensive weapon in those situations that allows our D to gap and now the other team doesn’t feel like they have any space so it’s something we’ve been trying to build from day one here even going back to conversations I had with guys in the summer and I think it’s something we’re uh start we’re improving There’s Jeff Flashel. Thank you to the Chicago Blackhawks for use of the video and thanks to Ben Pope for interviewing Jeff Flashel. He’s the only one on the B2 traveled. Yeah, good for him. Like we were saying, you get get you get a lot of your uh get a lot of your questions in and get a lot of stories out of it for for Ben. So, that’s good. That’s good. Uh before we continue, want to shout out uh the Steve 42 who always joins us from Scotland says, “Uh, lost my job and my dad’s in a hospital for heart surgery. I need some CHDO comfort tonight. Fingers crossed for a Hawks win. Uh yeah, Steve, uh all the best to you and your family, man. Of course. Um it is kind of like a family here. It’s got that vibe on CHDL Blackhawks. I think just Hawks fans in general kind of have that us against the world mentality. And I can already see people in the chat sending vibes to Steve. So if you’re out there listening, prayers, vibes, whatever you uh whatever you believe in, send them Steve’s way. And hopefully the Hawks get a win for you. But going through parent stuff, you and I are both all too familiar with that. So, uh, we’re thinking about you, buddy. So, uh, take care and trust those doctors and hopefully everything comes out the other way. All right. Yeah, absolutely. Hopefully the Hawks, uh, give us all, uh, something to be cheerful about. And, uh, you specifically. Yeah, definitely. Uh, for the Lightning, Vasileleski gets the start tonight. Uh, he is winless on the season. I feel bad I shouldn’t even say that because so much for that. But, uh, has not been a good start for him. And he’s a guy who missed a lot of training camp. You saw the Lightning. Did they trade for Phoenix Cppley or claimed him? They claimed him and then I think he went back to the Kings cuz Natleski came back. It was that’s kind of an insurance policy. But he has started the season with an 886 save percentage and a three and a half goals against average as he sort of works his way back to health for the Lightning. So hopefully the Hawks can take advantage of a not 100% Andre Vasilleski and uh get on them early and and see what happens because they’ve got speed, they’ve got some you mentioned it yesterday, their PDO is really high so they’re shooting at a high percentage. Uh so hopefully that continues against Fast. See you got the Lightning lineup in front of you. Any other anything else? I know Cooerov was was uh dayto-day recently, but he’s in the lineup today as is former Blackhawks sixth round pick Dominic James making his NHL debut and uh the revenge game. Yeah. For for a guy who turned down a contract that was offered to him. Um how dare you want me and I don’t want you back. Yeah. Um I mean I Hey, good good for him. Uh you you you root for an athlete who bets on on themsself and honestly Whoa. Whoa. Not the Well, not literally. Yeah. Figuratively. Um but you know, he he I think he saw what was brewing in Chicago and and probably figured, hey, my path is going to be a little difficult to get to the NHL with with where the Blackhawks are going, where their prospect pool is at, and the guys that are going to be in front of them. Um, so he he took an opportunity to, you know, go with with Tampa, which again, that’s a tough road to the NHL with a team that’s that’s that stacked, but some injury issues, uh, and some suspension issues with the Lightning. And um, lo and behold, here he is. And he’s played well to start the season in the AHL with with Syracuse. I think he’s got like six points in the first eight games or something like that. Like a good start to him. So, uh, hats off to him. Uh hopefully he does absolutely nothing tonight against against the team that drafted him. Uh but he’s in the lineup and and yeah, this is a Tampa team that is stumbling out of the gate. Uh they’re their metrics are not as good quote unquote as good as the Blackhawks. When you look at, you know, creating chances, uh, at five on five, Blackhawks, uh, have a, uh, 46.17%. Uh, Corsy4 and the Tampa Bay Lightning is 46.2. Shots four, uh, percentage at five on five, Blackhawks are 44.4, 45.4, and Tampa Bay is 43.1. The goals for at five on five, Blackhawks are 61.5%. uh goals for Lightning 44 uh percent goals for the expected goals for 47.6 uh% at five on five for the Lightning 46.5 uh for the Blackhawks and then yes the five on five PDO Blackhawks 1.057 Lightning 1.003. So, this is a team that is for lightning standards playing really below what you what you expect. So, um this is an opportunity for the Blackhawks to kind of ride the momentum that they’ve that they’ve gotten going here. I know the the days off is kind of stinky for them to have this much time off, have a oneoff road trip, and then come back home for some games, but this is a big opportunity for this Hawks team to kind of, you know, ride the momentum that they’ve created uh and and do it against a team that beginning of the year, everyone’s talking about the Lightning as in that contending conversation and, you know, being Atlantic Division winners and stuff like that. So, if you have the opportunity to to jump on a team like that, that is going to do wonders for your own self-confidence. Um, and it just it it again, like we’re not exactly there yet, but points and wins, it starts to matter. Well, Tampa hasn’t played since Saturday, so they’ve had some time to work on things, to write the wrongs. I think it’s really funny looking at the comments on the lines for today that Tampa posted. One guy says, “Got to try something.” Another guy says, “And another loss incoming.” Tampa Bay Sports on Twitter says, “Who is it the third lefty?” That’s uh Lillberg. And then another guy says, “How the f does this team keep trotting Littleberg out there?” Oh boy. Are the vibes bad? What? The vibes are not great in the warm weather cities all of a sudden. Yeah. Oh boy. Um, yeah. I mean, I I I think I’m I’m not counting Tampa out of anything, and I wouldn’t be shocked if this game is like 5-1 Tampa. This is just the reality of things. Um, but it’s a but it’s a big opportunity. I I think what we’ve seen plague the Blackhawks so far this season and put them into difficult situations is taking penalties. Now, the fact that they are still tied at top the lead in the NHL in penalties taken, uh, they’ve been tied with the Boston Bruins now with 41. Their net penalties taken versus drawn is minus 12. That’s last in the NHL. Eventually, you hope that starts to even out, but that’s a number that I really hope tonight can be something that they are mindful of um, and that they they can start going the opposite direction. Start drawing more penalties than you’re taking. use your your your speed, your footwork, uh, and your aggressiveness to your advantage when you have the puck. That way, you can draw more penalties and have the puck more. That’s a big thing in drawing penalties is you have to have the puck, but that allows you to obviously take less penalties. So, the the the possession game, the effort when you have the puck, that’s a big thing for them. And and I think when you do that, you tire the other team on. That’s where the Blackhawks have been on the other end of the spectrum. in some of those games where they get into penalty trouble. Yeah, 100%. Aside from the Montreal game where that was just kind of shenanigans, um you you start chasing the game a little bit more, you get tired, you’re grabbing, you’re tripping, you’re using your stick to try and play more than you are your feet, and that’s where you get in trouble. And Tampa with the uh ninth ranked, but it’s really seventh because they’re tied with a bunch with the 25% power play percentage. So, they’re effective when they’re out there. Um, yeah, that this is to me what has given me some some trouble kind of reading like what the Hawks really are because at the end of the day you are looking at some of the possession numbers and sometimes they look good, sometimes they don’t, but it feels like when they don’t it’s always you’re looking at the because they’ve been short-handed so long when you’re looking at the overalls. The five on five tells a pretty clear story of where they’re at there. Um, it’s just got just as uh Paul Maurice said about reducing like a goal a game with Spencer Knight. If you could take a one penalty fewer per game, it’s going to make a huge difference down the end of the as the season goes on because you’re wearing out your eyes. And what one thing about this team is some of your penalty killers on the Hawks are also some of your more reliable scorers in McKv and Nazar. And you don’t want to be I don’t want to say well yeah I will say wasting their minutes on a penalty kill. You want those guys out there attacking, using their speed, putting pucks on net, creating chances, scoring, all those sort of things. and having them on the ice on the penalty kill. There’s nothing more exhausting than killing a penalty, right? You see it when a team, even if it’s, you know, the first unit has it in a zone for a minute, a minute killing penalties is a lot more difficult than a minute five on five or Yeah, obviously a minute on a power play. Anytime you’re chasing the game, it’s it’s more taxing. Um, and yeah, I mean, you you’d as much as it’s been great to see how McKay has played on the penalty kill, I’d rather him do it when it’s five on five and use that effectiveness uh when when things are more even, not when you’re not when you’re trying to kill off a penalty. So, yeah, I mean, you you want to have those guys that you mentioned like their minutes be more effective when the game is is at even uh you know, even strength, five on five, whatever it is. Um, stay out of the box. It’s it’s a it’s a quote unquote simple uh strategy, but but try and try and keep it as as clean of a game as possible because Tampa’s a a dangerous team. You don’t want to give that you don’t want to give anybody, but especially Tampa, you don’t want to give their power play opportunities to kill you. So, if you can stay out of the box, uh and everyone should be very energized. It’s early in the season and you just had three days off. Yeah. Well, I I also think too like they should be this should be a game where their legs are under. And just as I I started the show saying like how excited Hawks fans are to play, I think the Hawks are actually excited to play too. They’ve been playing well. They have they have been the ones. If you think we’ve been suffering for the last 3 years, the players, multiply it by 100 for those guys. Yeah. that every night just getting your ass kicked and feeling like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel and now it’s here and you’re playing well and there’s some buzz and you’re seeing yourself on social media and like that’s firing them up and they’re chomping at the bit to prove themselves against a good team because look they see they say they don’t but they certainly see Domision’s updated projections of oh good start for the Hawks now I think they’re going to be 31st instead of 32nd. Okay, fine. You still no respect. Us against the world, all that sort of thing. The Hawks can rally against that. And I I really think that this game is a huge opportunity. The St. Louis Blues game 8-3 win was their first big statement of the year on the road. National TV, look at us. We are here or we’re close, however you want to define it. This is a, you know, ESPN Plus game. Not quite the eyes on it that you had before, but National Telecast, good team that’s well respected. It’s also the first game of the night. Yeah. At 5:45 Central time. Everything else starts at 6:00. So, one of the best goalies in the league. Yeah. People will be a cup contender. People are going to be watching this. So, it’s another opportunity for the Hawks to announce their presence with authority as we learned from uh Nuclear Luch on uh yeah, it’d be awesome if they could if they could get the first goal tonight and get it early. Like obviously, of course, you always want to score first and and score early, but I think just to get into that rhythm for the long layoff and then get just kind of feel like, yes, okay, it wasn’t a fluke. Yeah, this this run that we’ve been on 30 and one like it’s not a fluke. Like, we’re actually good. we’re we’re we’re good to go. Like give you that energy to, you know, get into the game and and and make it difficult for Tampa to find a find a groove, too, cuz that’s what they’re trying to do. The the way that they’ve started this season, like they are not in sync with what Tampa should be. And you hear it from the fans, like lineup configuration, guys that are that are in and out and you know, who’s available and and who’s getting minutes and stuff like it’s it’s not been going smoothly. No according to lightning standards. So if you’re if you’re able to make a game uncomfortable for a team that is, you know, already kind of in a in a little bit of a rut, like that’s that’s big. So if they can if they can hit the ground running tonight, um, and and get an early goal, maybe I mean, we’ve far be it from this Blackhawks team to back down from getting into the rough stuff as we’ve seen early on this season. Like maybe it’s something like that. Maybe it’s, you know, a a netfront scrum gets a little extracurricular and and you kind of, you know, try and set some set some tone and and land the first punch, literally. Um, that’s a way to get into the game, too. So, I’m I’m I’m up for it. I just want to see that I just want to see this group know that there’s an opportunity ahead of them and and take a hold of it. Don’t just say, “Oh, yeah. This is this this could be a, you know, big game early in the season. Oh, yeah, it could be.” And then just kind of approach it with a meh October effort. like no like like get into it. Feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel feel like this game matters. Yeah. Uh, Anggoverse says, “How the hell do I watch this game? Do I need to buy ESPN Plus?” I believe if you get ESPN from your cable provider, you can just log into the ESPN app and login through your provider. I believe that will work. I’ve I’ve lost all confidence telling people how to watch. If not, just Google free ESPN Plus trial and you’ll find one. Um, I want to get to Cory’s super chat, but before we do, a couple things. cuz we have over 300 people watching a pregame show on a Thursday afternoon. We greatly appreciate that. 112 of you hit the like button unprompted. If you’ve not hit the like button yet, please do. It pumps us up on the top of the YouTube pages. All hockey fans can find us easier that way, especially Blackhawks fans. So, those likes and those subscribes matter. Uh, also want to direct people to yesterday’s show with Pety. I know not everybody saw it. A halfhour breakdown on what Wyatt Kaiser is doing well. Absolutely outstanding. Make sure you go check out the Cory super Jake Gensel he made a mistake not signing with the Hawks. Hey, sure. You know, why not? Whatever you have to find, whatever your motivation is, right, to stick it to them, by all means, do it. And you got to ask yourself, Jake Gensel, he has a is it seven? He’s got six more years with Tampa. Nine million in three years. Where would you rather be in two years? Where would you rather be right now? Where would you rather be? Hawks are higher than Tampa in the standings. That’s true. Hawks are better. Once again, Canadian Thanksgiving. That’s the That’s the day, right? Starting lineup uh for the Hawks tonight will be the will will be Doc, Felino, and Slagert with Grizzlick, Murphy, and Spencer Knight as the starter. So, punch him in the face. That’s a That’s a potential statement uh making opening lineup. Yeah, we’ll see. And Pat season 53 wants me to take my shirt off for the RC ad. Uh $1,000 super chat and I’ll do it with all the back hair and everything. I don’t have that much, but we can work some things out in Photoshop. $1,000. $1,000 super chat. That’s not a lot. I’ll remove my shirt. So, for the company had $1,000 super chat before. Wait, I’m I’m changing it. $10,000 super chat.
