I hope that you’ll become one, subscribing wherever you get your podcast so you can make the Michael and I a part of your NBA and Memphis Grizzlies content consumption each and every time that an episode drops. But if you are not an everydayer yet, you will learn that when the Grizzlies are out on the West Coast, I turn into a pumpkin. I don’t stay up late. I wake up early and watch the game the next morning. I go to bed at a decent hour. So, Deich Cole is going to do a couple of solo shows, recapping the Warriors game on Tuesday, tomorrow, and then recapping the Suns game on Thursday. So, he’s got a couple solo shows coming up, so I’m here with you so he can enjoy the rest of his weekend, and the Mike will be with you on tomorrow’s show. We have a lot to get to, so let’s jump right in. First and foremost, basketball. It’s nice to have a couple of games. It’s nice that John Morant played both games and Jiren Jackson Jr. played both games. It color me surprised when I found that Jaw, who was on the injury report going into the Saturday contest against the Pacers. He played two nights backto back small victories and that’s not even necessarily on Jaw. Those of you that have followed this team for a while, you know they can be a little funky with their minutes restrictions and back-to-back rest and all those sorts of things. A positive development. John Morant played against the Heat and the Pacers and both games were fairly different, right? One, they both were blowouts. They have that in common, I suppose. But one was a blowout in favor of the Miami Heat, an embarrassing performance by the Memphis Grizzlies, and one was a blowout in favor of the Grizzlies, taking the Indiana Pacers and beating them by 25. So, the point differentials are all over the place coming out of those two games. But, let’s dive into the loss first. Let’s talk about Grizzlies Heat. Miami wins 146 to 114. And I’m not just going to read a box score to you because you could read a box score. You can do that on your own. I do think that it’s important to point out performances that are good from young players, right? And for me, the biggest takeaway from the weekend beyond the health of Jaw Morant, Jiren Jackson Jr., and both of those guys, again, it was limited minutes. I don’t want to make it sound like they were moving heaven and earth. Jaw and Jiren played, I think, below 30 minutes in both games. But young players playing well. Cedric Coward was the star of the weekend. Truly an impressive performance both in the losing effort against the Heat and then against the Pacers. I like to see Cedric Coward as a starter. I understand why he’s not a starter. And I think that especially as a rookie, you want him to get into a rhythm and a comfort zone. Maybe as a reserve. That’s the best way to do it in his rookie season. I’m cool with all of those things. My biggest thing with Cedric Coward is he has to continue to play even once this team is healthy because one of my favorite bits that I like to do is complain about John Kchar minutes, right? And I’m going to continue to do that because I don’t think John Kar should be getting considerable minutes. But Kchar was a major reason that the Grizzlies played well against the Pacers. I’ll get to that here in a moment. Cedric Coward is playing right now in part because Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clark, Zack Edi are all out. We’ve talked ad nauseium about who the 10th man would be in those situations. To me, the 10th man has to be Cedric Coward. He has earned that. He has earned that. Jock Landale is going to fall out of the rotation hopefully, and we’ll talk more about that here in a moment. You look at this team once they get healthy. Stanti Alama is obviously going to remain in that mix. Cedric Coward should be the 10th man. He has to stay involved. He has to stay engaged. He has too much potential as a wing defender, as a versatile, switchable offensive and defensive weapon. He can do so many things that the Grizzlies have been searching for for years. It’s a small sample size, but we’ve seen enough. I’ve seen enough to think it foolish to take away any opportunity from that young man. So, Cedric Coward was the MVP of the weekend. He was fun to watch. Even if you want to again with a grain of salt, bad teams, banged up teams, backto back the first week of the season. There’s all sorts of things that you can say to try to take down in a way what Cedric Coward did. I think it’s important to point out when young players play well. And Coward was the MVP of the weekend, but Javon Small looked good, too. And I think we have to continue to tip our cap to Zack Kleman. Maybe the King Klyman calls are a little overblown. I remember Justice Winslow. I hoped that would work. It didn’t. Obviously Marcus Smart. We talked about the pursuit of a player like Cedric Coward. They’ve been looking for this wing for a long time. So, it’s not like Kimman’s batting a thousand, but he and his staff are clearly skilled analysts and scouts of talent. Javon Small looks like an NBA player. I don’t see him being on a two-way contract beyond this season. Cedric Coward looks like an NBA starter, and I certainly see him as a key cog of what these Grizzlies are going to try to do. Again, imagine an eventual starting lineup of John Morant, Jaylen Wells, Cedric Coward, Jiren Jackson Jr., Zack Edit. That sounds like the future to me. And you have depth that can be taken care of financially. That’s one of the important pieces of the Desmond Bane trade. You have the capacity to build around this core. Assuming Coward is a hit, you can pay Javon Small and bring him into the fold on a teamfriendly deal and allow for him to continue to grow. You can bring back a Zack Edi, a Jaylen Wells when the time comes. You have that capacity now that it just wasn’t as easy to do when Desmond Bane’s contract was on this roster. So, that doesn’t mean that they won the trade and that doesn’t mean that Orlando was wrong to take on Bane, even though they’re having some growing pains right now trying to get Bane involved in their schemes. What it does mean is Cedric Coward and Javon Small are making the most of their opportunity. And Small’s probably going to be the odd man out when the team is healthy, but he has to stay engaged. And that’s okay because we have to remember Small is on a two-way contract. So, he’s not eligible to play the entire majority of the season. he’s not uh eligible to be in the postseason. So, he’s helping in the here and now. He phasing out as Jerome and Pippen Jr. return makes sense. So, the Grizzlies defense was atrocious against the Heat. Uh you don’t give up the amount of points that they did and be good. Uh the Heat scored 86 points in the first half on Mon on Friday night. That’s terrible. The game was well in hand literally at halftime. That’s one of those games that you flush. The team played poorly. The one thing that I do think it’s important to point out because I talk about it on this show all the time, and it’s a direct connection to the Grizzlies good performance against the Pacers the next night. 20 turnovers for Memphis against the Heat. Only four for Memphis against the Pacers. Rebounding and turnovers, those are the keys. Demich talks about rebounding a ton. I’m going to keep talking about turnovers. If the Grizzlies are able to protect possessions and maintain those and convert them into actual scoring chances, they are going to be more competitive in games. Now, is four turnovers realistic? Nah. Keep that number around 10 or though, and now we’re talking. The 20 is far too many. And it’s good to see your best players in the Pacers game. John Morant, eight assists, no turnovers. Massively important. Javon Small, six assists, no turnovers. So across your two point guards, 14 assists to no turnovers. That is a phenomenal phenomenal ratio. Taius Jones is smiling over in Orlando looking at that box score number. One of the best assist to turnover ratio guys in the league. That is what the Grizzlies need more so than making 50% of their shots, more so than being dominant night in and night out defensively. You certainly want to take that and develop those skills, but for me it’s turnovers. Can you protect the basketball? Can you maintain those chances? Everybody wants to get out and run, it seems. Everybody wants to create these second and third chance SC scoring possibilities, deflecting passing lanes. I get it. But if you’re forcing choices and you’re putting yourself in a position to rush for the sake of rushing, what’s the point of going super fast to get somewhere if you don’t know where you’re going? So, the Grizzlies did a much better job against the Pacers, especially in the third quarter where they put Indiana away. But it was a competitive win for Memphis. They essentially led from pillar to pillar against the Pacers. A great bounceback game. wonderful to see. You want to see the team compete and you want to see them have that quick turnaround, make corrections, and play better the next night. So, the Grizzlies are two and one going into tonight’s game against the Warriors. We’ll talk more about that later, but a a weekend dominated by Cedric Coward and the positive of John Morant, Jiren Jackson Jr. actually playing an early season backtoback in my opinion, as they should. Let me know on X. Hit me up in the comments. How are you feeling about the Grizzlies one andone weekend split between the Heat and the Pacers? When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies, I will be taking a look at the newest Grizzly, at least reportedly, according to Sham Shironia of ESPN. Stick around here on Lockdown Grizzlies. The Memphis Grizzlies are planning to sign center Charles Bassie via hardship exception. Sources tell ESPN on X. Grizzlies currently have Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clark, and Zach Edi sideline for extended periods, clearing the way for a 10-day hardship signing. Now, aside from the hardship signing being given in October, which is probably one of the most Memphis Grizzlies things ever for those of you that have followed the team for some time, lots of injuries. We’re big fans of having big injuries in Memphis, apparently. But aside from that unfortunate, inconvenient truth, this is exactly what Demich Cole predicted. If you are an everydayer and you checked out the episode last week where we talked about just this reality, Charles Bassie was the pick and remember it’s not what I would have done. I would have converted Von Small. I would have waved Vince Williams Jr. I would have brought in maybe a Charles Bassie via two-way. But what I didn’t know at the time is you couldn’t bring in Charles Bassie via two-way. He’s not eligible for that kind of contract anymore, which probably explains why he’s not on an NBA roster yet. Because you could pretty easily argue if you watch summer league beyond just your team, Charles Bassie was probably one of the best, if not the best bigs in the entire summer league in terms of doing NBA translatable skills. And what do I mean by that? Charles Bassie probably is what some of you think Jollandale is. And when you look at what he did last year for the San Antonio Spurs, and again, small sample size, 317 minutes played, and this is per cleaning the glass, but this guy was in the 98th percentile in offensive rebounding percentage, 15.6%. Landale’s nowhere near that. And Landale’s not bad. He’s just playing vastly out of his role. And I would argue that Charles Bassie replacing Landale in the starting lineup would be another example of that. But Bassie is a strong rebounder. He has been in the 94th percentile the season prior with the Spurs. He was there 94th percentile, 25% rebounding defensively. This is a guy who is a shot blocker. He is a rim protector. He has consistently been in the top 10% in the entire NBA among big bigs per cleaning the glass in rim protection. So you might be sitting there wondering to yourself or block percentage I should say. So you might be sitting there thinking to yourself, “Well, Joe, why is he available then?” Well, he’s a fairly limited offensive player. There’s no denying that. and he really, really, really cannot be depended on beyond the things that the Grizzlies need particularly from their bigs. They need the screening. They need the rebounding. They need the rim protection. But Bassie, I would argue on a much smaller sample size, can do the things that Jock Landale can do better than Jock Landale. So, if you look at this Grizzlies roster and you say that they need a big, again, I didn’t disagree with the Michael at the time. It wouldn’t it wasn’t what I would have done, but I completely see the vision here, and I do believe that this is going to be a a boost for the Grizzlies when it becomes official because Bassie stepping onto that court, whether it’s against the Warriors, the Suns, whenever that comes to reality. One of the positives of him not being a particularly dominant offensive weapon is you don’t really need to do a ton of install with the guy. You definitely need to talk about defensive rotations and drops and where to hedge and how he’s going to protect weak side protection wise. That that there’s all sorts of things that you still need to go over, but it’s not like this guy needs to come in and learn the intricacies of a motion play, a motion um pick and pop versus pick and roll dunker spot. These are all positions that a he’s played before and b he has a very specific set of skills again much like Liam Niss and Taken that that’s what Memphis needs him for. John Morant doesn’t need Charles Bassie to post up on the block and be an isolation score. He doesn’t need to be Jiren Jackson Jr. He just needs to be Charles Bassie. And to be honest with you, in my opinion, he needs to be better than Jock Landale because Bassie and Landale splitting those minutes, say Jiren plays 15 minutes at the five, and that means that you have 30ome others to account for between Bassie and Landale. If they each play 20 or so minutes, little less than that even, that’s a huge plus. And if you want to keep Jiren at the four because you think that’s where he’s best, add a couple of minutes to Bassie and Landale there and you have two guys now instead of one that can again in theory do some of what Zack Edy can do. Now neither of these guys are 7 foot4, 290 pounds. Neither of these guys have the frame, the college lineage and pedigree. They are not as good as Zach Edi, but it allows for Landale to have some of the load lightened on him because much like John Kar who I talked about earlier in the show, a lot of the issue that I have with Jock Landale is he’s being asked to do too much. John Kar is not in the rotation when this Grizzlies team is healthy and that’s okay. He’s a good end of bench guy. Jock Landale’s in the same spot, but he’s been starting and playing pretty sizable minutes for this Grizzlies team. He looks out of sorts at times. He looks uncomfortable just like a rookie would because Landale has not been asked to have the role that he currently has in Memphis in some time, if ever, at the professional level. Landale had one really strong season that he took and turned into a big contract with Houston, but he didn’t really have that same success for much of his stint with the Rockets. So now Bassie lightens that load. It lightens the load of Jiren Jackson Jr. It allows for you to not have to play Santi Alama in that position of the five where apparently he is not capable or he’s averse or whatever the case might be. Jiren is your third B third center now instead of your second. And maybe it allows for Jiren to get into a groove and find his rhythm in his more natural shooting spots. So kudos to Michael Cole. He called it Charles Bassie coming to Memphis per Sham Shironia of ESPN. This is a guy who has not played a ton of NBA basketball. Again, roughly a thousand minutes in his four years as an NBA player, but he’s 25 years old or almost 25 years old. He was a second round pick back in 2021. You’re not looking at Charles Bassie and expecting him to be your starter that’s going to replace Zack Edi. What you are hopeful that he’s going to be able to do is alleviate some of the pressure on Jock Landale and the other bigs that are having to pick up the slack with Edy and Clark both out for Memphis. So, welcome Charles Bassie. Shout out to Demich Cole. Nailed the the signing and we’ll see how he does maybe as soon as tonight. Hit me up on X at Joe Mullenax. Let us know in the comments how you are feeling about Bassie being a Grizzly soon enough. Wrapping up this Monday edition of Lockdown Grizzlies, it is I, Joe Molen, flying solo. As I mentioned earlier in the show, the Michael Cole will have you guys on tomorrow’s show because show because I am old and weathered and I will not be able to stay up and watch that entire league game. I am an East Coaster, some of you know. uh over here in Virginia. So, I am not going to be staying up late for the entirety of Grizzlies Warriors, but I will catch it and get caught up with it and I will be with you guys on the Wednesday edition of Lockdown Grizzlies. I got to tell you, I hate the Warriors. Even to this day in this new state with Desmond Bane being moved on from and not really knowing what the expectations should be with a different looking roster and a new head coach, I still get up for these Warriors games because I remember the matchups a decade ago and even just a few years ago with this Golden State team and this is a game that hopefully the Grizzlies are going to be able to get up for. Now Golden State has already ruled Al Horford out for this contest. It’s about to be a back-to-back for Golden State. And that’s a big deal, right? Because Golden State really depends on players like Al Horford, older players. But in that front court, him, Draymond Green, and others, how they all kind of continue to find one another, building that camaraderie, that chemistry, that’s a big deal. That’s a big thing. And not having Horford is going to hurt Golden State a little bit, I believe. But obviously there are other players out there for the Golden State Warriors more than capable of handling business for that particular side. Um I personally am really interested in seeing how Steph Curry responds in this space because the Warriors got cooked by the Portland Trailblazers the last time they were out. It wasn’t because of Steph Curry though. Steph was seven for 14 from beyond the arc, 35 points. It was an off night for Jimmy Butler. The reserves for the Warriors were not particularly good. And the Trailblazers are a sneaky solid basketball team. You know, Denny Abdia, Demani Tamar, we’ve talked about, at least I’ve talked about how I kind of see Portland as a surprise team in the Western Conference. And again, we’re two or three games in here. Portland looks sharp early on. And of course, everything going on with Chanty Bilips and all of that. We’ll have to see how that impacts that team, of course. But I do believe that the Warriors have a crew that is older, right? They have a crew that is definitely going to be looking for an opportunity to get up early on Memphis if they can, much like the Heat did on Friday night, trying to put this game away. They’re going to try to find ways to save minutes wherever they can. And I do believe that that is going to be a key thing in this contest. Can Memphis keep it close? Because the Grizzlies should be fresh and the Warriors should be fresh, right? It should be a relatively uh competitive game there. Neither team is coming off of it’s not the second night of a backtoback or anything like that. The Warriors haven’t played in a couple of days, so they are even going to be the fresher of the two teams. I I do see the opportunity for the Grizzlies to be successful in terms of rebounding. Jonathan Kaminga was the best starter that rebounded for the Warriors against the Trailblazers. Eight boards for Kaminga in 24 minutes played. Kaminga is the four, I suppose, in what Golden State is trying to do. And they’re und sized, right? Jiren Jackson Jr. has had a field day with the Warriors in the past because there’s no one that can really defend him. I could see Kaminga drawing the Jiren assignment, but he still doesn’t have the size in the frame to be able to hang with Jiren long term. And you have uh players like Quinton Post who obviously technically would be a center I suppose at seven foot tall but he he’s a very perimeterbased big. So that would I I guess make Jimmy Butler the two and Kaminga the three. It’s an interesting lineup with the Warriors and how they use these guys, how they utilize pod air pods. Brendan Podsky off the bench. You know, Moses Moody is a guy that’s going to continue to get minutes for them. It really is fascinating to me. It Golden State looks like a team that’s kind of in flux trying to figure out who and what they are. And that meshes and molds nicely with the Memphis Grizzlies, right? Because the Grizzlies are very much in that same spot. Now, the Grizzlies have a larger heat or injury issue. We already know that. But we also know that this is a Grizzlies team that goes into this contest hopeful that they are going to be able to compete in a variety of ways and get out and moving in space, get running, protecting possessions, all of that matters immensely. Like we’ve been talking about throughout this show, when the Grizzlies protect possessions, they have a chance to win. When the Grizzlies are able to rebound effectively, they have a chance to win. And again, the uniqueness of what Golden State is trying to do will position Memphis in a way, whether it’s Bassie getting early run, assuming he joins the team or that fast, or whether it’s Landale continuing to get comfortable out there running around and setting those screens for Jaw. Cedric Coward has a burst of energy off the bench. Can he keep that momentum going in his first road game that actually counts in the standings of his NBA career? Because we got to remember Memphis was fortunate to have their first three games of the season at home. Now they are staring down a West Coast swing. They are out and about in San Francisco. How are they going to respond in that building in that environment especially when Steph Curry gets going that adversity striking how this team responds. I can’t wait to see that because that’s a great way to figure out who your team is. You don’t know what your team is truly capable of until they get that punch in the mouth moment. And I would argue that Memphis hasn’t really had that yet because they’ve been in the friendly confines of FedEx form. So, they’re going out to California. They’re going to hostile territory. It’s not the playoffs or anything like that. But the Grizzlies have to see and find what their level of comfort is going to be and what their level of tenacity is going to be and how they’re going to approach these moments with this new look roster with this new head coach. We are still in information gathering mode in terms of what this early rehashing of this era is going to be. And the first road test is a fascinating one. It’s going to come down to rebounding. It’s going to come down to turnovers. Can Jarant get to his spots offensively? Who’s going to take that defensive assignment for the Warriors? Who’s going to pick up Jaw? And how are they going to be able to find their spots within what Golden State is going to try to them defensively led by Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler. It’s going to be a fascinating game. I can’t wait to watch part of it live and then the rest the next morning. Like I said, I’m old and washed and I will not be staying up late to watch it, but I highly recommend you do so and I highly recommend that you tune in to the Tuesday edition of Lockdown Grizzlies where Demco Cole will be with you talking all things Grizzlies, Warriors, and so much more. As an air about him, that makes you believe that he can be the next big thing
I refuse to jump to conclusions when a rookie plays well in a few games. I need to see a few years. They’ve tricked us too many times… GG Jackson, Vince Williams, Ja Morant, etc.
Good show Joe. Thanks for your insights.
Javon Small did not look good. Maybe after we already have a lead but he does not look good
The point of playing super fast is to dominate and overwhelm the other teams Joe.
To get used to playing fast with precision, you first need to play fast without it.
There are certain skills and instinctive decision making that you can’t develop by playing slow and thoughtful. This is why Tuomas told them to focus on speed over everything else at first in training camp, and it’s why murder ball exists.
With a 7 week training camp like in Europe this team would have both speed AND precision at the start of the season, but with the way the NBA is setup there’s so little time to practice that the start of the season becomes part of the preseason if you have a complicated System to install like Tuomas has.
As a consequence he has to balance how much he pushes the speed and the more complex parts of the System with how many games he needs to win at the start of the season.
We are still very much in the developmental phase and without many of the players. We are going to have more games where things don’t click at all like against the Heat, because if Tuomas doesn’t push the speed and everything else enough, we are limiting this team’s potential. To be better than the other 29 teams, you need to do things that they aren’t doing, remember? We are not trying to become a team that is pretty good and has things under control but a limited ceiling. We are transforming into the most dominant team in the league, and that process is messy.
If Coward is the 10th mane then Small is 11th
Bro. No. Having rookies and sophomores as a starting lineup in the playoffs is fool’s gold.
I been saying since day1 start coward over wells I like wells but he jus can shoot he can’t create his own shot
Wells good but he gotta learn how to create his own shot and not only that he gotta get some weight he gets bullied at times but I like coward over wells anyday
Charles Bassey is not better than Jock
People act like OKC has the oldest team in the league! Sure, some out key contributors are rookies and sophomores but that where coach maximizes there abilities right now! If TJ was coaching this team still it would be a problem but with TI and his ability to coach these guys up, i don't see youth be an issue. The jury is still out on him but i believe he has a much better feel for the game than his predecessor. We most likely wont win a chip this year but i could live with a competitive 2nd round exit considering the circumstances. But a contender next season for sure as long as we are healthy!
Coward and Small were both very impressive.
I do remember wells being a starter as a rookie and zach
I still think this team 30 wins only
We can get the wins on this road-trip. Let’s get it done.
