How do you all feel about a Mazur for MBN swap moving forward this season in Detroit?

  1. It needs to happen. He’s had the least amount of impact of the three rookies so far.

  2. I like his physicality and forechecking, but there’s also a lot of turnovers. I don’t think it’d be a bad thing to give him some games in GR to get some confidence.

With Berggren playing well, I’d like to see Mazur up but as a replacement for Rasmussen. Once Kane returns, something like:

    Finnie-Larkin-Raymond

    DeBrincat-Kasper-Kane

    Berggren-Compher-Van Riemsdyk

    Mazur-Copp-Appleton

Could probably swap around Mazur/JVR/Appleton. Bring Soderblom in if Berggren struggles. Eventually I think MBN replaces Berggren as the season continues.

  3. Don’t they need to make a decision before game 10 for waiver exemption purposes?

  4. No thanks. MBN needs to stay in the NHL and continue to grow at the top level. Mazur might have 4th line potential. MBN is a top prospect.

  5. I wouldn’t be surprised. MBN isn’t horrible as he’s had good shots, he just hasn’t buried one yet and his line mates aren’t helping much. He’s a rookie making rookie mistakes. Best to send him down so he can build some confidence and then get called up since Ras is not long for the Wings

  6. If it does happen, it isn’t the end of the world. We have Mazur and Danielson waiting in the wings and deserving a shot. We all know MBN is going to be good and that there’s weaker talent on the team medium-term but for a few weeks it makes sense to try something else.

  7. The kid literally just turned 20. Absolutely no harm in sending him down. He’s going to be a good one and I’d rather keep his development on schedule than stall it in any way.

Edit: I’d be happy with him staying up too, but not if his minutes are sheltered.

  8. MBN is playing bottom six and it doesnt suit him, I want the kid to succeed but playing on a checking line with no speed isn’t going to help his growth.

  9. I’d rather see him stay up for a few more games. He definitely doesn’t look like he did in the preseason but I think he just needs a few points to get out of his slump. This is a kid we’re talking about so he might just be in his head. He has the tools to play in the NHL.

  10. I think they should keep him up. CF% numbers have been very good. PDO indicates he’s unlucky. Keep him up. Keep rolling him on the second line while Kane is out. I get it if he goes down but I feel like he’s close to something here.

  11. He hasn’t looked like the best of the rookies but look who he’s anchored by. He’s got the two guys least known for offense on the team setting him up. How much of his own offense is this sniper supposed to create. Also I’ve liked a lot of his game. Hard on the forecheck and he doesn’t pass up hits. He’s had some egregious turnovers but, he’s a rookie. I don’t think I’m against him going down, it will likely help him in the long run. I think this says more about Compher and Copp than it does about him.

  12. MBN is a rare case for a prospect because the defensive side of his game is better than most prospects, so he can stay afloat in our middle six. That being said, he’s mostly being used in a checking role and not seeing a lot of offensive shifts with definitive puck possession on the Wings.

For me, the biggest thing for his development is getting those reps with the puck on his stick to build muscle memory and overall offensive experience. Not that they are the same player, but I feel like that lack of opportunity was a large part of why Veleno never broke through offensively.

The issue is that McLellan needs to feel comfortable playing him more than 12 minutes a night so that MBN can get those reps. Preferably on a non-checking line.

  13. Playing top line minutes and putting up big numbers in GR is better for his development than playing sheltered minutes and not putting up points in Detroit

  14. Weird the first few games MBN seemed to be around the puck and although no points he was getting opportunities then it just seemed to drop off

  15. I think it’s important to remember how Kasper’s year started last year. He had like 7 points in his first 36 games or so. Even if MBN scratched, it’s good for him to see the game from the press box. Slows the game down for them.

He hasn’t looked out of place and has had a ton of good chances. I’d actually like to see him on the first line with Finnie and Larkin to try to get him off the schneid. He might be squeezing the stick a bit, especially since Finnie and ASP have gotten a handful of points.

  16. I say send ras down too and bring Danielson and Mazur up. Even though you probably can’t send ras down

  17. His job is creating offense. Right now he can’t create any separation, his turnovers have been many, he gets pushed off the puck easily. His individual defense has been really ugly which you should expect at his age. HE IS GOING TO BE FINE LONG TERM. But he’s 20. He needs a trip across 96 for a few weeks/months. That’s absolutely no big deal.

  18. If I were Rasmussen and Soderblom, I’d be genuinely concerned about my place on the team, especially after thus year. Danielson and Mazur are both close. All this talk of “they have to start using their size” is wearing thin. I think they are what they are – and I’d rather give Danielson and Mazur a chance on that third line.

MBN needs to play on a scoring line. Him getting 11-12 minutes on a checking line isn’t doing him any favors as far as his development.

  19. I think he would benefit from some seasoning in the A. He made the team out of camp but hasn’t looked good outside the first few games. He’s just behind the play.

That’s okay. He’s barely 20. He will be back. Let him develop some more with knowledge of what nhl pace is like. Steve also loves the contract slide, and he’s not getting minutes, so I think it’s likely.

On the other hand, Mazur is 23 and we need to know what we have there. He would require waivers next year. Let’s see what we have and if he sticks great.

Either way I kind of anticipate danielson to also be up by our home game vs New York.
