Banged-up Carolina Hurricanes complete six-game state fair road trip

Uh Kane’s lost to Dallas and it’s it’s I’m gonna maybe this is the theme for the day. Everything has two two conversations, right? Everything there’s two ways to look at it. Uh so we’ll just break down every game in two different ways. And that was unintentional, but I just find myself saying it over and over again. So we’ll run with it. The Canes at Dallas game, to me, there’s two conversations. One is that individual game, right? How did you lose? What happened? and you’re looking at what happened on the ice, who played well, who didn’t, who disappeared, who showed up. Rod Bindammore after the game uh says that the the cause for the loss was the special teams. This is uh in his own words. Well, it was, you know, one they tipped in front. We had a little bit of a miscommunication there and then that was a good play by them. And then the other one, I think he was trying to pass it and it looked like he went straight in, but that’s a four on three that, you know, those are real tough to kill. So yeah, we definitely lost the game because of special teams. There’s no question about that. It was a weird game. There were there were quite a bit of deflections off uh your own player into your own goal. Um right, as he as he brought up, four on three and then the power play, it’s a it’s a situation you don’t find yourself and hope to not find yourself in often. Four on three that probably should not have been there’s there’s a lot of references that went that have over the last handful of games riled up the Kane’s fan base. Um, I do my best not to dive into that too much just because I think it comes out in the wash, but if you want to be mad about it, I would be a-ok okay with it. Um, you can get into the the details, right? You can get down into the nitty-gritty power play, a bad call, right? Your penalty kill without slaving. You can get into those, right? You can get into where the heck has Andre Fetchnikov been, right? Because you would think in a game where you have two of your forwards out, he’s vaulted back up into one of your top lines because of that, you have a blue line that’s wounded, leaking oil because of of of the injuries. And and you have a power forward that you want to just go out there with the idea that I don’t care how this game goes. I’m leave leaving my fingerprints all over the the result. And and I mean at times he’s right in front of the right in front of the net with the puck presented on a platter and and he couldn’t find the back of the net. I made the joke online that uh at this point it’s actually kind of impressive that Fetch has no points through this point in the season. kind of like what you start telling yourself when you uh go 0 for 10 on bets like or 0 for 10 calling heads or tails and you’re like you know it’s almost harder to go 0 for technically it’s the same percentage to go 10 for 10 as it is to go 0 for 10 calling heads or tails like like the fact that he has been in scoring positions so often and he doesn’t even have an assist is is like technically not even like an accidental like secondary where he like chipped it into the zone and we ended up scoring a goal. Technically, that’s almost more difficult. I’m I’m joking. But it’s it’s real that especially when dealing with injuries, you need guys like him to make plays. But then for every one of those, you have AO still on a season opening point streak. It feels like they’ve played, you know, I I like to use the term seems like they’ve lived a life. Seems like they’ve lived two lives this hockey season already, right? They’ve they’ve weathered storms. They, no pun intended, they’ve dealt with injuries. They’ve dealt with hot streaks. They’ve been the the toast of the league. They they’ve been the pity of the league with the injuries. Uh and and yet every game Sebast is still producing. And in a game like that, scores a goal. And I know Jary has been lighting it up and and he’s the one kind of taking his star turn and rightfully so. Amazon helped with that. His personality helps with that. The fact that he’s scoring goals more than assisting helps with that. Uh, but Aaho has been quietly so so good and doing all of the things that you’d expect from Aaho, the the leadership stuff and and you know, checking in with everybody. Overall thoughts on the road trip, which we can now start doing some uh some some kind of debriefing of because they’re back at home tomorrow against Vegas. Here’s Rod Brenda and his overall thoughts on the road trip. It’s tough when you lose a game that was there for us. um you know, probably shouldn’t have won the game the other night. So, I guess you could say it worked out. But, you know, it’s a huge concern with the injuries we have. It’s not sustainable, you know, to think that we’re going to go out there and win every night when what we’re what we have back there. But, those guys dug in and did the best they could. I kind of like like the way that that that hits, right? Probably shouldn’t have won the first one, but probably shouldn’t have lost this one. It’s it’s very it’s hockey, right? It comes out in the wash. As long as you uh continue, it’s a big sample size sport. As long as you continue doing the things that you believe in, you should come out on the right side more often than not. We talked about it at the beginning. Um the good news is some of those reinforcements are on their way. Shane Gstaspear appears as if uh he he should be available for tomorrow depending on his comfort level according to Walt Ruff team reporter. Uh, Porto Kochov appears as if he’s on the mend and and at least close to being available on a game night. Uh, uh, one of their two goalies expected to be depended on coming into the season. Haven’t seen him yet this year. Uh, and good news on Keandre Miller not being much much much further away from a return. Kind of not expected for tomorrow, but not expected to be a long-term absence. Yeah, you felt like hopefully it wouldn’t be too severe for him. He did end up taking warm-ups in that Colorado game and that’s kind of when things alerted for him and they figured out something wasn’t quite right and they ended up going with the Joel Nestrom for his first NHL action in that one. But it’s good to know that hopefully some of these guys are coming back. Still a little concerning to hear uh Jacob Slavven is still kind of a little further away in terms of coming back and I don’t I still don’t think we know exactly what the injury is with him. I know he tweaked something in that Philly game, which was the last home game before they left on the road trip. And mildly concerning that they’ve been gone now for two weeks, and he’s uh still not able to practice. So hopefully not crazy severe. Uh that’s one of the things like obviously we know he’s very crucial and a huge part of the offense or not. Well, he contributes on offense, but just a huge part of the operation in general. Um, but just because of his play style and the fact that it’s not points, it’s a little bit more intangibles, it’s gap control, it’s keeping track of your man, like I think the impact of that it’s it’s kind of lost how much they don’t have when he’s not in the lineup. Like we don’t notice it as much, but they’d be shutting down teams even more if he were still in the lineup. And it’s something they’re missing that’s maybe even overlooked. Even though obviously we know Jacob Slavven is a big contributor, it’s also really hard to know if they’re doing an adequate job replacing it. Like for example, if Seth Jarvis were hurt and other guys picked up and scored at a higher rate, we would be able to it’s money ball, right? You need to replace the the batting average based on the people. You know, you can just number it. Uh you can use an equation for Slavven. It’s like I don’t know if they’re if they’re still in position or I don’t know if they’re they’re making up all the intangible things that he brings cuz there’s no number on it. Um I’m going to lean on and this is where we we put the optimistic spin. A conversation we had on Friday and and Max you were here for it. Uh if you can survive without Jacob Slavven, I think you come out on the other side assuming that he is able to come back and be himself, right? You never know with injuries, but if if they can give him the appropriate time to be 100%. And I’m not quite worried yet. Um I’m somebody that that played college football and I know like a tweaked hammy is 3 to four weeks. If you get beyond 3 to four weeks, I start going, “Oh, is this a long-term thing?” Uh but if it’s if it’s soft tissue, you want you want to give a month in a lot of cases. Uh and I don’t mind if Slavven misses a month as long as they continue winning enough games uh to stay in the mix. Um, if you come out on the other side, I think you’re better for it because you add Slavin to a group that doesn’t need Slavven, it becomes gasoline to a fire, right? Then he’s just he’s just adding up. But if if it’s a group that needs Slavven like desperately and he’s out for an extended period of time, it becomes really wor worrisome. Uh, I think Gustin Spear, if he can come back, we’ll help out a lot. That’ll help with special teams. It’ll help with rotations. It’ll help with a lot of things. He’s just a veteran. Uh, and I think they need

  1. Ehlers needs to up his game. That own-goal tip-in tilted the momentum. Canes up 2-0, Bussi playing well, Dallas fans quiet, Dallas was not playing well. The game was lost starting there—regardless of mistakes compounded on later. Three assists and an own goal in eight games is not inspiring. One comment pointed out that he has scored more goals against the Hurricanes than for them.I hope Tulsky is smart enough to not waive Bussi when PK returns. He will be gone! The next time Freddie or Pyotr “tweak something”, the Canes will deeply regret it.

  2. Yes we had bad calls in a couple games and they were terribly annoying but we found a way to win even after the calls in Colorado so the hall call shouldn’t be the reason we lost. We could’ve played better and a game shouldn’t come down to one call.
