Jaguars Hot Takes After Bye Week | Jags A.M. | Jacksonville Jaguars

[Music] Welcome to Jags AM today. I’m Kanani Stevens. you all had a restful and enjoyable bye-week as the Jaguars are getting ready to take on second half of their season after a week off. JP Shadrick in for Brian Sexon today, John Oer with us as well. So, let’s go through some of our big things for you after the by-week. They’re brought to you by GEA, government employees health association benefits for federal employees and retirees. Uh, big thing number one is Trading Block. JPI tried to check out a little bit this week, not look too much into social media and all the things that were going on, but I did see Diana Rinu released a report that said they Jaguars were listening to calls for Brian Thomas Jr. We don’t know the validity of that, of course. But hearing that, not anything anybody probably wanted to hear at that point, but considering the struggles BTJ’s been having, is that a reasonable thing to think is going to happen or was that just a rumor? You know, I don’t know. I If the phone rings, I think they’ll answer it. You know, there’s one of those things. I was in Oregon this week and I had it was 50°. I’m bald, right? So, I had to wear the Jaguar stocking cap and I had a a guy at one of the the Oregon stores asked me about, “Hey, what’s going on with Brian Thomas Jr.?” I’m like, “What do you mean?” He’s like, “He’s on my fantasy team. He’s not doing anything.” So, it seems like one of those situations. He’s a good football player. He’s going through it, John, right now, but you just got to kind of stick with it. We’ll see what happens in the next week, but I I just don’t know if this is going to happen. Yeah, I don’t think he gets traded. Um, when teams call during the by-week, people pick up the phone and I think it’s what happened. But, um, I don’t expect him to be traded. Uh, he does need to improve on what’s going on. There are issues going on with Brian Thomas Jr., but I would be shocked at this point um, if he doesn’t work through those problems with the Jaguars. Yeah, I think much to do about nothing. We’ll keep everybody updated, of course, if anything does develop. Our big thing number two is by-week buyin. So, we talked a lot um about what went on in the last two games before the byee before we left and those two kind of frustrating losses, especially the one against the Rams. But, John, we get a little bit of a sneak peek here into some of the meetings and what goes on with the players and Liam Cohen meeting with the team before they took that break. And it really doesn’t feel like he’s lost the room whatsoever. He still has that buy in. It feels like everybody’s still on the same page going to the second half. Well, just based on, as you said, the team meetings and then on his Monday media availability, um I think he has buyin because I think he has a very realistic grasp of what’s going on. Um his theme has been, hey, you know, there’s no reason we can’t turn this around if we play the kind of football that we played early in the season and if we get back to what we are and and and really stop making it easy for other teams. Um, so he’s as good as I’ve been around. Um, a Tony Dunie was as good as there was at after a loss sort of calming the waters. Liam’s the same level and Tony Dunie is a Hall of Famer. So I think in terms of players buying in JP, uh, they know what reality is in the NFL and when their coach grasps it, I think it’s easy for them to follow this guy. And I think he’s laid a groundwork for buyin. And there’s actual proof of success this year. We’ve had seasons around here before where the team is 1 and7 or 0 and8. I mean they they’re four and three. They’re the number seven seed in the AFC playoffs if it started today which it won’t last a season to go. But they’ve had winning results even though they’re battling through some things internally. Penalties, drops, the list is longer than that. So there is some positivity there. They they’ve been able to get winning results and u you got some proof, Kai, of of what they can actually do if they are able to clean some of these things up. Yes, there’s a lot of positives ahead, everything ahead for this team. Our final big thing is down the stretch now that they’ve had the bye-week. It’s all about focusing going forward and winning the games that are on their schedule, but JP, we we look at some of the issues we talked about before, obviously. What is your main focus? What’s the number one thing that needs to get fixed down the stretch? Well, I mean, it’s penalties. Clearly, I think that’s the number one thing. They’re um they’ve only I think they’re what, fourth in the league now in accepted penalties after Sunday’s games, and they’ve played one less game than the other three teams in front of them. So, do the math on that one. They had 18 flags against them in London. 13 of those accepted. Um cut that in half, maybe you got a better shot in some of these games, John. So, for me, it’s penalties number one. Yeah. And I I think mine is also based on penalties. uh they have to be able to run and they have to be able to function offensively. Um I think until they cut out the penalties and the avoidable errors, the functioning errors that they talk about, uh Trevor can’t give up early sacks that just lead to sort of uh fouryard differences, which you say, “Wow, what’s the problem with picking up second and 13?” Well, it’s harder to do that than picking up second and six is the problem. So, um, I think if you get back to at least giving yourself a chance to line up, like JP said, I think it solves a lot. And you’ve got to start catching the ball. I mean, it it’s drops. It’s not okay to have two or three easy drop passes a game. Think about how many drives that kills. Uh, maybe three and you get nine in a game. That’s a third of your offense that you’re giving away dropping the ball. Yeah. And, you know, you go back to that the down in distance thing. second and and 13. Well, I mean, if they’re dropping the ball, then it’s third and 13, right? So, you’re just adding on to it. And guess what? Max Crosby’s coming up this week, too, in Vegas. So, uh pass rushers are pretty much on every team. You get those down and distance situations. That’s not a favorable look for this team. A lot of stuff to clean up going forward, but as we mentioned, they are four and three. So, coming up after the break, we’re going to go over our highlights from the first half of the season for the Jaguars. [Music] Frank Frangi here. Guys, it’s all right in front of us, man. Everything we want, everything we talked about doing and wanted to do is all right in front of us. I can’t be more excited, guys. Yeah. Has it been our best last two weeks? Absolutely not. No. But man, isn’t that some of the control? Shouldn’t that be the exciting part about it? It’s not like we over here getting our kicked in. We can control everything. Every single aspect of what we do moving forward, we can control. Get away. Get away from it. Do what you got to do individually to reset, recalibrate, and let’s come back on Monday, guys, with a renewed understanding, juice. But nothing, nothing still changing, right? It’s right here in this room. All the answers and solutions are right here for us to just keep going and take the next step. But the details matter, man. They do and it starts here. Us as coaches need to do it, coach it better, but we got to go do it better as well on the games. We all good on that, guys? Understand? Sure. Let’s go. Jags up three. 1 2 3 Cohen talking to the team before the bye week last week. If you haven’t checked it out, I do want to recommend that you do it. I believe I think it’s technically a hunt extra, but it’s about 10 minutes and it’s kind of the meeting, the recap post frustrating loss in London and kind of what the team talked about before they went on the break. And that’s kind of what led me into the segment a little bit because after he talks a little bit about the mistakes that they made and taking ownership of some of the stuff they did wrong, they went over some of their highlights of the season and how they can some of the best things that they did in the first half. So, I think it’s important for us to remember to be positive around here because it has been dire times before. Yeah, I mean they have done some good things. Like it is a long football season. It’s been uh you know, seven weeks now, eight with the with the by-week. They’ve done some positive things. They’ve won four of the games out of this more than they lost. That’s like a winning record last I checked. So yeah, they could be better. They could be a whole lot worse, John. Well, they’re four and three. And I thought going into the season they were an 8 n 10 win team depending on how they played within that. And I thought they would get beaten badly a couple of times because usually first year regimes in the NFL have a couple of games where it gets away from them because you’re still getting to where you want to be when you’re doing this thing full strength. Uh that’s what happened. They may everybody’s panicking over this. The two best teams on their schedule might be the two teams they just played. And uh the Seahawks are really good. And I I think quietly we’re going to find out that these two teams, the Rams and the Seahawks are really good. Um it’s a good division. I never thought going in this is a 13-4 team. They got to they have three losses. I think they can get to 11 and six, 10 and seven, get in the playoffs. That’s I think they feel like they’re going to be better than that. But I think that is a very realistic goal for this team. Let’s look back at some of the stuff that they did do right in the first half because let’s go to week one. Um Travis ETN coming out of the gate looking amazing and as much as Liam Cohen talked about establishing the run, we saw that right out of the gate obviously with what he was able to do running the football and just I think one of his career days he had a 71 yard run um in that game against the Panthers and just talent across the board from the running game that we hadn’t seen in a while. Even Bachel Tutin as well. Didn’t they go for 200 on the ground in this game? I think they did. I mean, it was kind of set the tone for what they wanted to be this season. You know, a lot of people maybe on the outside that aren’t in it every day thought, “Oh, it’s Liam Cohen. They’re going to throw it around.” I don’t know. This is this is the bread and butter of what the Jaguars need to be to be successful offensively. And they uh really set the tone on the offensive line. And then ETN breaking free with some big runs and and did it all day long. John? Yeah. played two very very good defensive lines going into the buy, which is why you didn’t see this as much. Uh passing game has to start working better to spread it a little bit and allow this to happen more often. All right, let’s jump ahead to week three. We saw um uh the Texans game obviously after their loss to the Bengals. They come back. They want to play well against a division opponent and Brian Thomas Jr.’s catch at this point when we’ve been been talking about him not being able to come down with the football. His struggles, this was a momentous play. It set up the game-winning touchdown and the trust to see Trevor Lawrence check out of the run play, find Brian Thomas Jr. there across the middle, trust him to go get it and setting up this play was huge. Need to see more. Yeah. I mean, and uh but it it does show that when it’s there, there’s dynamic plays to be made in this offense. Um they just have to get to this more. Uh clear, I mean, it goes without saying you need more 45 yard passes from Brian Thompson, receptions from BTJ. Yeah. And that that capped off a tough day because he had dropped the ball a bunch in that game and really kind of told you everything about what he was going through when he made the catch and then the run. He threw the football against the wall. He was just so overcome with the emotion there to set up the gamewinner. And then the ending of this game as well will give some love to the defense because obviously tons of takeaways early in the season from this team and they’ve gotten away from it in the past couple of games. But uh Josh Hines Allen getting after the quarterback and then Antonio Johnson interception at the end of the Texans game to kind of seal it when the Texans looked like they were trying to get something in the last you know seconds of this game trying to trying to tie it up or win it. And um Josh Hines Allen play Josh Hines Allen’s play. Yeah. Uh we need to see more of this too. John they’ve had close calls in the past rush game. This was one that secured the bag, if you will, at the end of the game, but um that’s really been uh hasn’t been a lot of that consistently this year in the past rush game. They’ve been close. They haven’t been able to get to the quarterback a whole lot, especially JHA. So, uh that was a big play and a big moment to get there and affect the play and a heads up play on the back end to catch it. Yeah. And I think I think you’ll see the defense get back to more of this uh once Trayvon gets sharp going again. Uh don’t overlook this game as a big game. I get the Texans are three and four. Um but they’d be four and three if they got in this one, right? Um and it’s it’s been easy to overlook them because the Colts are so hot. But uh this game is is going to end up in the second half of the season. And I think people looking back on going, I’m glad we got them because I think they’re I think they’re still a factor. I think they are too, especially after their win against the 49ers yesterday. Um, look ahead to week four. Parker Washington punt return touchdown. The momentum shift that felt in that game. We talked all week, you know, the Jaguars haven’t played well in the east on the West Coast. They haven’t won in California in a while. And and this felt like a um a shift at this point in the game. I remember in the press box, John, we were kind of watching it go down and it it was huge. It was huge. It uh it’s what they didn’t have. I mean, they got one called back in London. I don’t know if they’d made the same impact that this one did. Um but when your offense is struggling a little bit, and they have at times, you need big plays from elsewhere. They were getting them early, uh you know, turnovers and big plays from special teams. again. Uh they probably need one or two of these coming down the stretch uh to turn a couple of games. Yeah. When when the offense is struggling and dropping the ball and not running it and maybe the defense is playing pretty well, special teams, they can contribute too. Um and we’ve seen Parker do this now twice in his career that counted. One in London this year didn’t count. And both the returns, by the way, are on deep punts that give him space in front of him. He makes a man miss, finds a seam, and and he’s got the ability to take it the distance. And uh let’s let’s see some more of this as we move along. Momentum changers. We love that. And then the ending of this game in week four as well, because a huge game for Eric Armstack, going back to the team he used to play for, coming up with the strip sack at the end of the game. Huge sealing it, shutting off any potential comeback for the 49ers. Leading the team in sacks this year. I mean, so what? Three, three and a half for him. and moving back to his more natural position inside and making the impact against his old team. It was a big week for him certainly, John. Yeah, we need um to see more big pass rush uh in big moments. They need to get leads to set up this kind of a situation. They have the ability to do that for sure. And then final one for us is going to be Devin Lloyd who had a tremendous start to this season um and couldn’t have made a bigger play for himself on Monday Night Football against the Chiefs. a pick six going back 99 yards here and just also the team hustling down to block for him some of the big guys as well. So, it’s a full team effort here, but just that was kind of the defense as a whole felt like a play in that moment. Yeah, when you have seasons like this and again this is a season where you’re trying to get out of 4 and 13 close to what you want to be. Uh you’re not going to be dominant in those seasons usually because you’re turning around a team that is 4 and 13. So, there’s going to be plays if you reach your goals, there’s going to be plays you look back on and say, “We got one there that maybe we don’t without a big play.” Uh, this has a chance to be one of those plays that you look back on in in five or six years and say, “That’s one of the ones that helped get started.” That was a huge plus. No doubt. 99 yards uh against Momes, a quarterback they hadn’t beaten before. and Devin Lloyd, a guy who had struggled in his first three years, finding his his legs defensively this year. That is a a huge play against a perennial powerhouse on Monday Night Football. Doesn’t get much bigger than that. A moment in prime time. We love to see that. Stay with us on Jags Amam after the break. We’ll give you our hot takes for the second half of the season. Mine’s Mine’s a pretty hot take. I I’ll say that. Mine We have subs, by the way. We don’t have subs. I wish we had subs. Hot takes. Oh, hot takes. Hot takes. Well, hot takes with a John, start us off. What’s your hot take with tea? It’s um Now I’m drawing a blank and I was just told back to basics. Back to basics. Back to contention. contention by this. I mean, um, they have to get back to what they were doing early in the season. Um, if they do that, we saw the highlights, they can be a team that runs the ball well. Uh, they can be a team that plays efficiently and they can be a team that stops the run defensively. Uh, if you do that, you give yourself a chance for takeaways. Um, I don’t necessarily they’re going to be I don’t necessarily think they’re going to be a team that beats really good teams by double digits. I think uh you know the Chargers are coming up, the Broncos are coming up, some really good teams. You have the Colts twice. They can get a few of those playing the way I’m talking about and then get the getable ones. Um if they play the way they’ve shown us they can play. Um can they get back to that? That’s we’re going to start finding out on Sunday, which is a huge game on Sunday, by the way, against the Raiders. Big, massive, big. Got to get going in the second half um the right way. And four of the next five are on the road, by the way. Well, the road, home, neutral, wherever it is. If you have 18 penalties in the game, it’s not going to matter too much. So, they got to get this one going. If they can get got to kind of keep pace with Indie as well right now until you get those head-to-head matchups later. Something to consider. They do have a ton of um divisional matchups the back half of this season though, so that’s in their favor. But Indie’s kind of a runaway train at this point. So, we won’t get into that right now. JP, what is your hot take for us? Okay. Um, stay with me here. 1963, the Bronx Zoo in New York opened an exhibit called the most dangerous animal in the world. And people would walk down a corridor and they’d look through the the gate and there was a mirror because it’s you. It’s the humans, right? You are the most dangerous animal on the planet. If the jaguars walked down and looked in the mirror, they are the most dangerous animal on the planet. They could hurt themselves and that’s what they’ve done. Uh if they overcome that, um they can hang with any team. Yes. even the really good teams left in the schedule. They’ve already beaten some really good teams. Um the Rams game got away from them. Rams could be a Super Bowl team. That’s fine. But there’s no team I I don’t think that’s just so marketkedly better on paper than the Jaguars if they handle their business. So look yourselves in the mirror. Realize that it’s you that it’s the toughest team left on the schedule, the Jaguars. JP’s here to motivate. We should lend this that little story to Liam to give to the team meeting. I liked it. most dangerous animal in the world. Dangerous yourself. Danger. Um, I’m going hot take because I want this to happen. So, I’m going to will it into existence. I think Travis Hunter is going to lead this team in touchdowns at the end of the season. I want the focus to be more now on Travis Hunter. I think they’ve experimented with him on both sides of the football. At this point, you need someone to catch the football. You need someone to make plays. Travis Hunter’s done that for you. He’s shown he’s capable of doing that. Give him more responsibility and let let him do that for you. because at this point you’re giving opportunities to other people that aren’t making those plays. Give it to the guy that can make the play for you. We’re almost 30 minutes into the show and this is the first Travis Hunter reference that we’ve had which is pretty remarkable considering that he did go over 100. A lot of that in the second half last or two weeks ago now at Wembley and it just feels like you got to get your best player on the field more both sides of the ball. um put them and this guy especially in a position to go perform and when other people around him may or may not be performing. Well, we were doing highlights and he didn’t really have touchdown highlights in the wins. Uh and I’m with Kai. I think it’s going to change. I think he will be uh what the offense starts running through in the second half of the season. I’m fascinated to see what that’s going to look like because uh it’s a little unusual to have the offense run through his position, which is a little bit of a slot position. Uh but he’s too good not to at this point and and and he’s been reliable. I’m not saying he has no drops, but he’s caught the ball. His hands are really good. So, I think you’re going to see uh Travis, you know, Travis and Travis, you know, the two best offensive players so far. uh get Brenton back into that and then you’ve got some go-to guys on offense. And think about if they would have hit some of those passes to him early in the season, what we would be talking about, especially nationally with with Travis Hunter, he would have a couple more touchdowns at least and and some big plays and big moments early and uh that, you know, they had the PI in that game against Cincinnati, right? So, uh if those aren’t there, if if those are there, he has catches early, then it’s a whole different narrative right now about Hunter. And I think a point to mention as well is that this team has spread out all the touchdowns. I think we what five or six players have one touchdown. Hunter Long is leading your team with receiving touchdowns at this point. Yeah. First two in his career of all things. But um and which is good for him. Those are great that the Jags have those touchdowns, Kai, but I am happy for them. But they need wide receivers in there to make plays. Hunter Long did not have Hunter Long in that preseason prediction as the first touchdown as well and leading the team at the buy. So stay with us. I just found out that they had a Westside location. I thought they were only the beach. Um, Westside’s closer to me. And for people who haven’t been, their food’s insanely good. So, um I They really don’t have to pay us to say it. It’s true. I might go over to Westside. Those chubby style wings. Love that. And then I think we’re supposed to have a happy hour Monday uh later in the season from the beach location, which is always live on location. Yeah, we love that. Get the fans. Working on the deets right now. Working on the deets. Good to know. We’re working on the deets for this week. We’re back in action. Some of the schedule is similar, some of it’s a little bit different. We’ll hear from Liam Cohen a little bit later on today. Um I’m looking to see here hear about some of the injuries on the defensive side of the football. Obviously Trayvon Walker has been back playing, but hopefully I I think he’s getting potentially a different cast on his hands. He’ll be able to use his hands a little bit more um during the pass rush and then also hoping to get an update on Deon Lloyd. We haven’t heard about that just yet, have we? No, I I haven’t. I mean, that’s and they may not even tell you anything today with that. It’s one of those and let’s see how the injury report happens as the week goes along. But that the calf thing, you don’t want that to linger because that leads to other things and and can just stay that hamstring that whole area. I got to nip that in the bud. And if there’s any issue at all, uh I think I’d sit about another week. But this is what the bye-week does a lot of times. You know, this is this has been a banged up team, John. And those little those little bumps and bruises that happen some for some other guys, too. Okay, they’ve got 10 games to go. This should be as fresh as they’ll be the rest of the season. Yeah, they’ve been fortunate in one sense and that these injuries are not season ending, but you also you also throw Brenton Strange into that mix and you’re talking Strange, Walker, and Lloyd. Uh I could argue those are three of your top five guys who have been out out or limited. Uh you can overcome injuries, core guys, which those guys are, they need them back. They need them back soon. We’ll hear from coaching and some players as well later today. We’ll be back with you here on Jagam on Wednesday to give you an update on what’s going on this week. [Music]
