Freddie Freeman, Will Klein & Dave Roberts Recap INSANE 18 Inning World Series Walk-Off vs. Toronto

Skipper, first of all, congratulations. But can you put into words the range of emotions that you and your team have just gone through in playing in probably one of the greatest World Series games ever? Um, yeah, it’s one of the greatest uh World Series games uh of all time. Uh emotional. Um I’m spent emotionally. We have we got a ball game later tonight um which is crazy. Um, yeah, there’s just a lot of heroes tonight. Obviously, Freddy put the exclamation mark on the game. Um, but you see what Will Klein did. Uh, you know, saw what Edgardo, Robleski, um, Clayton comes in, he was up for three innings and comes in and gets a huge out for us. Uh, you know, just across the board, everyone just had huge nights, uh, big nights, just kept kind of fighting, kept fighting. And um you know those guys over there, they gave everything they had. And uh you know, unfortunately, somebody’s got to win that game. And you know, fortunately for the Dodgers, we got Freddy Freeman on our team. And uh yeah, I’m just so proud of uh this group of men. Right up front, Doc. Dave, John Snider just told us that there would be more walks in Otani’s future. So, how did you have to sort of navigate that? No, it’s I get it. you know, he’s uh you know, the best player on the planet and you know, he was uh on the heels of a huge offensive night and you know, John smelled that and wasn’t going to let shoe beat him at all obviously and even when nobody’s on base and putting him on to make the other guys beat him and uh respected and uh fortunately we have other guys behind Shi that can still do some things and yeah, I mean a hard-fought game and safe spot. Steve, Dave, congratulations. Can you just talk and describe how you viewed it? How exhausted were the players uh as you sense it? The batters were swinging wildly. Am I misinterpreting it? Or were they exhausted? No, they were exhausted. Um you know, Will Will Will Smith caught 18 innings and um you know uh just to continue to try to grind and we took some good swings. The marine layer kicked in and I thought you know Will’s ball early was gone. Uh Freddy hit another ball I thought was a homer. Teao hit a ball that could have been a homer, but you know, we kept going. Uh, but you saw what Lowour did tonight. That guy, man, he laid it out there. Um, so just a heck of a ball game. Fifth row on your right, Bill. Um, Dave, two things quickly to follow up on Maria’s question. You played with Barry. Is Showi at Bond’s level now where you expect this every night to get that kind of treatment? I I think it’s all relative. Uh, you know, Barry’s the greatest hitter I’ve ever seen. Um but you know this day and age um there’s just you know him or maybe Judge uh but yeah you know I I think that we’re just fortunate we have Muki and and Freddy behind him but uh you just don’t see that type of uh behavior uh from opposing managers and that’s just the ultimate sign of respect. And then how did you balance Will hasn’t gone this far at any point this year and then all of a sudden Yama’s throwing. How’d you balance when you were going to use each one if you had to? Yeah, it was uh you don’t ever plan on using playing 18 innings and um you just kind of ask more from the player and uh he delivered. He’s through I mean probably three times as much as he’s ever thrown before and certainly with the adrenaline on this stage. What he did was incredible. Uh that’s not even enough of a credit to him on this uh outing. And you know, Yamamoto with a day off potentially taking the baseball. He was in the next inning. And so it just speaks to, you know, guys will do anything to win a championship. And uh they’re laying it out there. The fifth row on your left dock. Dave, if if you did have to turn to Yam there, do you know how long you would have potentially let him go? Uh he would have gone as long as we needed. He was he would have been the last guy. We’ll go to Doug in the first row. And you’re right. And Davis Moore and Will Klein. I mean, you talk about your roster, all the superstars, all the high price talent for someone like that to have the moment that he did. Just kind of what can you say about that moment for and that performance from Will Klein and also Enriquez? Uh both those guys performance for the ages and um you know Will went four innings tonight uh filled up the strike zone competed his tail off and uh you know in the postseason you know people talk about the the superstars but you know a lot of times it’s these unsung heroes that you just can’t expect and guys uh you know come to pass and you know pop and uh tonight was Will Klein’s night and and obviously what Edgardo did was uh was just as uh paramount. finish up in the second row of your left. Uh Dave Shoi was very active tonight. Uh he’s your game four starter tomorrow. How is he feeling after all of this? He he’s spent I mean he was on base eight nine times tonight uh running the bases. Um he’s elated. Um but yeah, he he’s taking the mountain tomorrow. He’ll be ready. All right, Doc. Thanks so much. Hey Freddy, always a pleasure. Yep. the uh what what what what is the mindset is they’re walking showy over and over again to pitch to you and and Mookie and then you know you had constant situations where you had runners on base in extra innings because the way it was set up and it’s like then you finally come through with with no one on with no one on. Yeah, it’s weird how the game works sometimes, right? Um, show’s game. Um, I I hope we don’t lose sight of getting on. Our starting pitcher tomorrow got on base nine times tonight. Um, just incredible. Um, you know, it’s just kind of how when you’re that hot and you you’re hitting um balls right center, left center like Show was tonight, you just knew he was feeling good. So, I mean, that’s the right moves. You don’t want Shi to beat you and let other guys try and beat you after the his first four at bats. and took a lot longer, but we finally did it. Go up front in the middle here, Freddy with Steve. Congratulations. Thank you. C can you talk about and put into words how exhausted you were on the 18th inning, you know, to us it’s, oh, it’s just swinging the bat. I know it’s more than that. Can you tell us how tired you were at that point? I mean, to be honest, I wasn’t actually that tired. uh when you have your your bullpen doing what they’re doing, it just keeps firing you up over and over and over again. Um if you’re tired in a World Series game, that’s kind of I don’t think anybody’s tired after that. But um it’s just when you’re going through all that zero after zero. Um I was just trying to get on base against tough lefty sinker baller with a hard curveball. I was just trying to get on, but got to a 3-2 count and was able to put a good swing on it. Uh my swings were getting better as the game was going on. Um, I thought I had a couple hits in I don’t know 21 innings ago. Uh, it just it felt my swing was getting better and better and thankfully I was able to get one over. But I don’t think we’re physically tired. I think you’re just mentally tired because you’re in it every pitch and every pitch means something in the World Series and in the playoffs. Um, so I think we’re all emotionally and mentally drained. About five rows back in the middle. Hey Freddy, you’ve hit a bunch of balls seemingly on the screws. is even going back into Toronto game one and two and then tonight wall that looked like at any point do you get frustrated you get annoyed? Do you get anything? Um I mean there the one in Toronto I thought I hit way better than the the one to center field where it still was like 20 ft short. But um it’s not I’m not getting frustrated. It’s because the ball’s on the barrel. So I I know if I keep staying with that if I try and switch it up then I’m going to most likely not be on the barrel. So, if you just keep putting good swings on it, it’s sooner rather than later, it’s going to it’s going to be um what you want. But, uh yeah, as the game went on, the the ball was going a little bit more true for me to center field and left center. This the one that Miles ran down in left center off Lowour. That’s even though I got out, I was like, “Okay, there it is.” I finally felt stay behind the ball and and drive it. And it just made my confidence sore. And thankfully Will Klein um MVP of this game uh was able to throw more zeros up and I was able to get up again. About six rows back. Are you right Freddy? Uh Freddy, of all the times that you guys nearly won the game extras, um Will Smith’s flyyous foul ball, which one kind of stood out as the dugout getting most excited like maybe that was going to be it? Yeah, I mean I think it’s it’s more of you just as an offense you’re trying to get on. I I know I it felt for a couple innings we were trying to do too much and one of us was just trying to hit a home run and then as we started getting you know passing the baton. Max got the walk, Taylor got the hit. We just didn’t get the the hit that we needed. So it it was starting to look like better at bats after a few at bats where I think we were just trying to do too much. But uh as the innings got on, we were getting closer and closer to a ball going over the fence and uh thankfully our bullpen kept throwing zeros and we got one about six rows back on your left pretty high. Oh here. Oh, hey. Hola. Have you talked to Yamamoto? I mean, if it wouldn’t be because of you, he would be going to throw. Yeah. The next inning. I know. Uh I hug Yeah, we hugged him. Um but that’s a testament to our team uh that he’s willing to go do that. Um it it took every single guy tonight and uh for him to want to do that um I think that just shows you who we are as a group. Um we’ll do anything to win the game. Um but for him to go out there and I did see him warming up and I was like, “Oh man, that is we we got to keep this guy out of the game.” Um but um yeah, but it’s just even though we didn’t come in the game, I think that just shows you who we are as a group. Do two last ones, Freddy. Uh Julian on your right. Hey Freddy, um you kind of alluded to it a little bit, but just how do you describe show reaching base nine times and then he’s you look up and he’s your starter for tomorrow? Yeah. Um I think he didn’t he give a quote that he said he was feeling better at the plate before the game. I think he did. Uh he definitely was. Um it’s I mean we he’s a unicorn. It’s just I don’t there’s no more adjectives you can describe show. Um it’s four for four five walks. he finally got the pitch um pitched two at the in the last last his last at bat and he still had the patience to not be trying to do too much and get on base. Um he’s just incredible. Uh we’ve been talking about him since he got here in 2018 and we we’re still running out of words to describe a once in a 10 generational player. Uh Taro on your left congratulations. So it was about 7 hours almost Tuesday. Yeah. So did your lovely children get to see that moment? Did who? Uh your lovely children. Uh I I didn’t see them on the field, but I know they were here. I don’t know if they got taken home. Um one of them one of them woke up at 7:30 this morning. So not so sure if he made it. I know Charlie’s going to be here for sure. I just don’t know if the four-year-olds made it. But my whole family was on the field except for my kids. So they’re on the and so I would assume no one got taken home. So I would assume my kids are still here. But we’ll see. I guess after I finish this, we’ll see where they’re at. We’ll finish up in the second row. Freddy, when you hit the walk-off last year, you said it’s the sort of thing that you dream about backyard playing whiffle ball. Did you dream about doing it twice? Uh yeah. I mean, no, I don’t think you ever come up with a scenario twice. And um but you just kept getting the opportunities over and over again. I was that the one I flew out um to center field. I was just really trying to hit a single there and get get a base hit and move on and get get this game over with, you know, 3 hours ago. Uh but it it’s just when you’re when you’re in those situations um over and over again. It’s kind of what you you’re always in like that’s what you’re talking about as kids. And last year it was always bases loaded, you know, and you know, two outs, bottom of the ninth. Yeah, I know it took happened in the 10th, but um to have it happen again a year later to hit another walk-off. I just I I I don’t It’s kind of amazing, crazy, and I’m just glad we won. And we’re up 2-1 and um we got our show on the mound tomorrow. Once in a lifetime moment twice. Yeah. Thank you guys. Thanks, buddy. Good night. Yep. Good game. It was Congratulations, Will. Thank you. Can you just tell me what was going through your mind during all of the innings coming back and being so effective tonight? Uh just just keep going. You know, I we weren’t losing that game and so I had to keep going back out there. I was going to keep doing that and doing all I could to put up a zero and then sit back down and and go do it again. Far back on your right, uh you guys having Alex’s number on your cap. Uh can you tell me uh just how that came about? Uh, you know, I’d like to let like them speak about that when when they want to, but just keeping them in our in our thoughts and our prayers and, you know, uh, there’s bigger things than baseball and, you know, he’s he’s in all of our hearts. About six back on your left, Russ. Hey, will uh, can you tell me when the last time you had thrown 72 pitches was and when tonight you knew that you’d have to, you know, really take a bulk of those innings? Uh, probably college. uh my senior or junior year when I was still a starter. Um well, I I realized that when I looked around in the bullpen and my name was the only one still there and so you know I was just going to go until I couldn’t and you know that’s kind of what what happened and thankfully Freddy saved us from Yama having to do the same thing. All right, third row your left Tyler. Yeah. Uh congratulations. Couple question. Um was that your last inning for sure the 18? I think so. Sure hope so. Um, and the first three, you know, went went pretty quickly. How much of a grind was it to get through that fourth inning? Couple of walks, wild pitch. How much do you have to dig deep there? Uh, yeah, a lot. Um, started to feel it. And, you know, there there are times when like you’re starting to feel down and and you like you feel your legs aren’t there, your arms aren’t there, and you just got to be like, well, you know, who who else is going to come save me, you know? So, I got to had to dig deep, do it myself. And you know, hearing hearing our guys in the dugout and and the fans kind of come behind, especially with Will calling, you know, that last curveball, I was like, “All right, cool. Let’s do it.” And, you know, just having those guys kind of takes it all away from takes all the fatigue out of you and stuff. Also, how did you stay sharp, you know, earlier in the playoffs when you weren’t on the uh roster? And then was it a surprise to be put on the World Series roster? I was we were in Arizona um throwing live abs once a week to their guys there and then you know playing catch and and you know trying to stay in it mentally and it wasn’t easy but you know we had guys there that you know made it possible and stuff and so having those guys around uh really helped. The second row are you right Jack? Well like you you start this year in another organization you kind of bounce back and forth over the last couple months. I mean could you have ever imagined a moment like this when you’re going through some of that stuff? Like do you think about like you know wanting to be ready in case like a situation like this happens or or what does it kind of feel like to to have gone through that now and and you know had this kind of night? Yeah, I don’t I don’t think I could have ever imagined that this would happen, you know. I mean, at the start of this year, I was still with the A’s and then, you know, ended up with the Mariners and then here, you know, just even that was was crazy. And then we were at home and then, you know, got to go to Toronto, get added, and I was excited for that. And then now, like, you don’t ever expect these things, but, you know, you got to stay in it, you know, mentally and physically and just in case. And you know, you never think it’s going to be like this crazy, but just being able to stay ready and, you know, help the guys that have worked their butts off for this. And then Dave told the broadcast, I think during the 16th inning, that he was not going to push you past the 17th. Uh, were you guys having conversations about how long you could go? Did you did you fight to go back out there? And did did like Yamamoto going to the pen change the calculus at all from from what you know, or what was that like? I just I just said I was going to keep going. Um, each time I came back in there, like how many more? as many as you guys need, you know, and you know, Freddy hit that home run so we didn’t have to find out. Uh, Yama throwing nine or throwing out of the pin on one day rest after nine innings is would have been insane, but that’s the kind of guy he is. So, you know, he wants it, too. And I mean, we all just wanted that so bad, but I know we did not have to find out. Far back on your left, Will. Hey, Will. Uh, first off, congratulations. Um, you know, throughout this year, you know, you’re kind of back and forth between Triple A and the Big League ball club, and someone else referenced it, uh, being left off the previous playoff rosters. You know, did, uh, could you say that coming into tonight? Maybe use that as motivation, uh, or was it just kind of a one inning at a time of inning? Yeah, it was one inning at a time. You know, I wasn’t I was out there, you know, going one pitch trying to get each guy out that I faced. You know, it wasn’t like I was angry that I was left off. you know, there are other really good pitchers that are were added and you know, like originally it was like a little disappointing, but you know, you can’t be mad to get added to the World Series roster. And so I wasn’t No, I wasn’t thinking about that. I was more so like I’m just going to go out there, do what I can to, you know, help all these guys that have worked their butts off, you know? Fourth on your right, Julian. When you look at like obviously probably right now you’re spent, right? and show reached base nine times and you look up tomorrow and says, “Oh, he’s your starting pitcher.” What thoughts come to your mind about him when you think about that? He’s a freak. I mean, that guy I don’t I don’t know how anyone can can do what he does. Uh, you know, being the best hitter and the best pitcher, you know, in the league. Uh, I don’t think there’s a word to describe other than he’s, you know, the goat. But, I mean, just getting to be teammates with him is, you know, a great honor. So, I mean, that guy’s he’s going to go out there and shove tomorrow and we’re be like, man, he he was on base nine times yesterday and he’s not tired at all. So, uh far back in the middle, AJ, I know you had pitched four innings and were maybe thinking about pitching a fifth. So, what were your emotions like when Freddy hit that home run and where were you when it happened? Uh relief. Um no, just pure excitement. I mean, eight 18 innings, 17 innings of like pure grit and determination of, you know, everyone on that team, the guys that didn’t play, the guys that aren’t on the roster, like everyone was into that game with their all. And so, just, you know, that was kind of the epitome of what the team’s done all year. And just having Freddy do it like, you know, he would uh just kind of was a cherry on top. What were you doing the second that it happened? Were you having conversations? Were you watching it? Where where were you specifically? Uh I was sitting on the uh sitting on the uh railing. Uh you kind of you kind of gut feeling, you know, and then I blacked out. So I don’t remember what I did after that. Tyler in the third row. Well, did you grow up expecting or wanting to be a pitcher? You were a catcher for a little while, right? How did that transition come about? Uh yeah. Uh I always liked pitching. Uh you know, I was I caught growing up, too. And I always, you know, always wanted to be a pitcher, but I think my mom hates when I say this, but uh like going to like prospect camps and, you know, talking to schools, I always wanted to like go to college as a pitcher. And she’s she wanted me to stay as like do both, you know, stay well-rounded. You know, you never know what’ll happen. Um and then I think senior year, I broke my thumb on my th uh throwing hand. And so that kind of like nixed like catching and hitting. And so I still tried to throw. And then, you know, I ended up like I pitched in summer ball and that’s when like teams are like, “All right, like we we want you to pitch.” And so that’s kind of where that where that went. And I’m I’m glad I don’t catch. Uh I still feel it on my knees though sometimes. Russ. Well, I know you were in the clubhouse briefly before you came in here. Did you get to check your phone and see how many text messages you had? I looked at it and then put it down. It was I’d never seen that many notifications in my life. I don’t know if I’ll get through them uh in the next month. Um, but I’m, you know, I’m gonna try to get back to people. I have a lot of people to to thank that have, you know, gotten me where I am today. And so, you know, those people, I I’ll I’ll try to get back to them and do my best to respond to everyone that’s, you know, supported me. Do two last ones dug up to your right. And well, you threw 72 pitches tonight, your previous career high was 36. Just how are you feeling right now? Just your level of exhaustion and just what were you feeding off to kind of get through this? I don’t think that’s set in yet. Um, just, you know, pure adrenaline. Um, you know, just that I had that thought in my mind that we we weren’t going to lose this game. And so each time I went out and, you know, I felt my legs retire. I’m like, well, who cares? You know, like no one else is going to care that my legs are tired right now. The hitter doesn’t care. So why should I? And, you know, just finding it and me to throw one more pitch and then, you know, throw another one after that. And so, and then sitting down and getting back up, you know, the same thought going back out there for the next one, like putting up a zero. We’re not losing this game, you know. So, I was that’s kind of what got me through it. And then yeah, Freddy. And then the Freddy celebration and then they all go over to you and circle around you and celebrate with you. What did that mean to you to just have them embrace you like that in that moment? I that was so cool. Um I never, you know, dreamed that anything like this would happen. And so just, you know, having the guys like Kersh, Freddy, Show, Mookie, like all those guys like, you know, kind of celebrating me for a second there was uh just insane. I don’t think I could have, you know, dreamt a dream that good. So that was Yeah, that was crazy. One last one for for Will. All right. Well, congrats on a great night. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you guys.
