What are we talking about today? Should we be surprised? Spurs are undefeated to start the season 4-0. Yeah, coming out of the gates hot. Should we be surprised about this start? Is there any reason to rain on the parade? I don’t think so. Oh, I mean, I can think of something, but I don’t know. Should we be surprised at the Spurs looking very good on that court and having no blemishes on the record? And then we’re going to talk about the disrespect question mark. Did NBA.com’s power rankings disrespect the Spurs? We’re going to talk about that in a few minutes. Go to bring in our guest back everybody in mobile. I guess he’s mobile today. He is Mr. for Rudy Compost of Sweep the League and the Sports Answer. Rudy, how you doing? Good, Jeff. Good. Yeah, I’m mobile. I’m actually on my way to the NBA finals right now to to make sure I get my seat for the Spurs. That’s how confident Rudy is about the Spurs making it to the NBA finals. Uh make sure again to follow him on X Sweep the League and check out his show, The Sports Answer. More on that later, including a familiar face that’ll be joining his show uh later on this week. Uh Rud, let’s go and dive into it because I know you’re a busy man. uh 4-0 looking really good out there for the most part. There’s some hiccups. Yeah, I know you’ll probably bring them up, but for the most part, this team is looking good defensively. Thank you, Wimi. And offensively, again, thank you, Wimi. But the point is, as a team, they’re playing well. You’ve seen Kellen Johnson really being kind of the unsung hero early in the season. Rookie Dylan Harper after shaking off the nerves is, you know, was a big reason why the Spurs survived a scare versus Brooklyn. But nevertheless, Rudy, we look back at the preseason. Remember the preseason, the Spurs didn’t lose a game. If you want to be technical about it, they are undefeated since preseason play. 5-0, 4-0 in the regular season. They’re 9 and0 actually. But I I think we should not be surprised because on paper heading into the season, this team was loaded depth at almost every spot. Victor is back. looking like he’s on beast mode right now. Uh, you know, Castle is looking great. You look, as much as Deon Vel gets a little bit of bagged on by fans, he’s really coming into his own now. Looks like he’s settling into his new role. I I wonder, Rudy, that if there’s any Spurs fans, including you, that should be surprised because I’m not surprised based on the makeup of the roster, the the the mentality of the team heading into camp. I I just think nobody should be surprised. What do you think? Yeah, you know, you and I did a locked episode in the offseason talking about the first 20 games of the season where we said, “Hey, it’s going to be a really good start for the Spurs. I think I had them around 16 wins out of the first 20 games.” I knew it was a pretty big and Eric only because their schedule didn’t have a whole lot of, you know, home run hitters when it came to playoff teams. So, the 49ers there is not a surprise to me. What is really a surprise is the fact that they are again the better defensive teams in the league. But we can kind of maybe we could credit Boston. We can also credit the coaching staff. Sean Sweeney, shout out to Sean Sweeney out there. We thought maybe they would come out a little bit lackluster on the defensive side, but they haven’t yet. It’s not a surprise on 4-0. Would be surprised is can they get to that double digit mark? Maybe 10 and0. I mean, that’s the kind of the number that I’m circling right now because again, the teams that are playoffbound, you’re seeing Minnesota, Anthony Edwards is having issues, LeBron James is out, Luca Donic is out. You’ve got a lot of teams with their playoffs experience. They’re going down with injury right now. Spurs taking full advantage. They’ve got to take advantage of the first 20 games. Yeah, absolutely. And and here’s the thing, too. Um I was I’m not Another thing, too. I’m not surprised that they are good defensively. I’m not. you know, just I mean, we all saw it last season. The moment Wim Wimy went out for the season, you know, the the numbers defensively just plummeted. So, he’s back. No shocker there. Uh, but what’s also cool is that you’re seeing a little bit of just how much everybody’s making an impact, not just defensively, but on both ends of the court. Now, let’s go and look at some numbers here. This is via Synergy Sports. Uh, let’s start off on the offensive side of things. I mean, in transition, their effective field goal percentage is about 76%. Right? But the normal field goal percent is a 68%. So, they’re pretty much scoring in transition all the time. How about the half court? Again, 55% of the time they are scoring a bucket in the half court. So, they’re in transition, they’re likely going to score. Half court, they’re going to score. And they it gets even more interesting, you know, when defensive presses on them. So when they pick them up halfway, they actually score at 63% effective field goal percentage shooting. So this team is lethal offensively and that’s a credit to Wimby, Devin, Castle, Harper, Kellen. This team is very balanced offensively. Pick a position, they have a score. Your big man, we know that’s going to be moving on. Uh what about from your small forwards? Harrison Barnes almost went near perfect versus the Raptors. So, he’s a threat deep. Overall, offensively, they’re very, very balanced. I if I just look at the offensive side of the court, Rudy, I don’t see many flaws. Do you? The only flaw I see is the fact that they’re they’re so-called assassins from beyond the ark are not exactly showing up. Julian’s having some stray raers. You saw in preseason Lindsay Waters was actually, you know, done untouchable from being on there. You see the struggles from Harrison every now and then, but I think the three-point percentage could be a lot better. Uh, is that also it’s also a positive thing to get because maybe shoot very many threes, which is what a lot of people were asking for. He’s down in the late paint. His mid-range is darn near flawless, but for me, it’s that three-point percentage. Eventually, it’s going to come back to haunt them. Luckily, it hasn’t yet, but at one point of the season, they’re going to start they’re going to start making these shots and these guys that they sign, he and you know, Waters and even Harrison Bar, they’re going to have to start knocking dancing all the threes, including Damon. But, it could go up as well back into the mix. Here’s something interesting, uh, Rudy. So all possessions, every time I take a three-point shot, whether that’s, you know, half court, you know, running transition, whatever, just their generic overall possessions, they’ve attempted 121 three-pointers and they connected on 37%. Now, they’re just all possessions, but get this. Yeah. When they’re in transition, so when they’re running up on the to the offensive end and they’re going to somebody’s going to pull up from a three, they’ve actually they’re actually at 64%. So again, that trend, what that tells me, now granted, yeah, it’s very minimal attempts. So they only attempted 14 in those situations, but what that tells me is this team, again, this offensively, this might be their bread and butter is high speed, high fast, get out in transition, everybody run. Hey, it’s almost like the old ABA Doug Mo days. I I mean, that’s what it feels like. This is where the sports could thrive offensively. What do you think? Yeah, I think the fast motion fastpaced motion offense is going to be good for the Spurs. Uh again, you know, Mitch Johnson is able to input his own style of offense. Now, we are seeing it. Whoopy, as I said, Whoopy is active in the paint. He’s getting to the basket. It seems like the game is becoming a lot more easier to him. Uh you’re also seeing guys like Dylan Harper, the rookie, come in. He’s actually contributing probably more than what he expected as well as are other people going to expand for him to contribute. It it’s just a fast-paced offense and it’s not a bad thing, but that also may be a reason why we see guys like Julian Waters as well kind of struggle a little bit because of the the style of offense that they’re pack. But again, it’s not a bad thing. They’re still putting up a lot of numbers other than they’re going through little spurts here and there. I think that’s the reason why the Fox is so important because every now and then against Toronto and you a couple of other teams, the Pelicans, they also they kind of tend to lose that lead. They kind of tend to lose that momentum. So again, that just goes back to veteran leadership. But as far as the offense goes, I mean, it’s it’s working perfectly. No reason to change it. Yeah, it’s working. All right, but what about the defensive end? Let’s talk about that when we get back right here on Lockdown Spurs with Mr. Rudy Compos of the Sports Answer. We’re back right here on Loft Spurs joined by Mr. Rudy Copa. See him on your screen. He is with the sports answer. More on that later. We’re talking about the Spurs hot start to the season. Undefeated, but should we be surprised? Now, we looked at the offensive side of things in the last segment. And overall, I don’t think Rudy and I were surprised that they’re going to be a potent offensive team considering the horses they have on the roster. You know, the type of motion that they’re playing. Rudy brought up a fast-paced motion. But defensively, again, nobody should be surprised, mainly because it begins and ends with Wimby, and he’s proving that he should have already won a defensive player of the year by now. Uh, he’s likely going to get it. The NBA should just give it to him right now. What are we waiting for? But it begins and ends with Wimby. Yay, Wimby. Keep that up. All right. So, I don’t think we need to go into what Wimby does defensively because we know what he does. But groupwise, you know, teamwise, they’re first in defensive rating at 101 as we speak. 101 first. Defensive efficiency, they’re first in the NBA at 90.7. How about points allowed? second in the NBA behind the Bulls. They only allow 105 points per game. In today’s era, 105 is like holding somebody down to 80 points. Seriously, 105. If defense wins games and defense wins you a ticket to the playoffs, Rudy, what do you think? Defensively, is is this team kind of balanced so far? Is this as we s talked about offensively check, defensively big check. This this team might be a huge headache for the Western Conference teams. What do you think? Yeah, you know, I’m I’m not really surprised. I had them as probably one of the best, if not the best defensive teams coming into the season. I’m also surprised that their offense is actually clicking on all cylinders. Defensively, Jeeoff, I mean, like you said, the coaching sense that they were able to hire bringing in Sean Sweeney, you’ve got Corus. You got other guys on that staff that’s anly hope on the defensive side of the of the ball. But I mean, you saw with Victor Gman and he should already going beyond his start defense part of the year this season. But you’ve also emerged the game of Steph Castle. He started the season off just picking passes off left and right, getting his own ball and just making plays that defensive side of the ball. It’s contagious once you get these two guys going and you seen the guys of like Dylan Arthur, you know, Damon and their defense. It’s just a contagious thing. There should be absolutely no surprise that this team is one of the best defensive teams in the league. And the good thing about it is your best your some of your best defenders have not stepped on the court yet. Jeremy Soz, a very underrated defender. Dear Fox was averaging two steals a game last year with San Antonio. And oh, get this. Once this guy gets going, you’re going to add another player in the name of Carter Bryant to that defensive mix. So, this team, I will be more shocked if they fall out of the top five at the end of the season when it comes to defensive rating. Yeah. You know, I I want I you know, we were talking I dug deeper into the numbers, defensive numbers. So, get this. Steals per game. They’re at 8.2. That’s eight steals a game that they’re averaging right now. How about blocks per game? Just put Wimy’s number on there, right? But they’re averaging about 2.5. So, they’re doing three blocks a game. Opponent field goal percentage 42%. The olding teams are 42% shooting. Yeah. And more importantly, the three-point percentage, how how much are they holding other teams to that? Um, 35%. So, they’re getting it done, not just interior-wise with Wimi, but perimeter-wise, uh, they’re making sure that teams think twice about trying to score on San Antonio. Can you look, knock on wood, you know, nothing happens to Wimi, but even if something, let’s say Wim is load managed or maybe he needs a couple of nights off, do you think this team can survive defensively without Wimi? Again, not not trying to say he’s going to get hurt or anything, but let’s just say he gets a little managed for a couple games, right? because he’s he’s averaging about 34 minutes a game right now is give or take a minute or there. But would you be okay Luke Cornette stepping in uh you know maybe Gohan up in his defensive numbers you know could this team survive a little bit without WBY defensively or is it going to repeat of last year where it just plummets? So if you look at the first four games of the season when Wendy’s been out they’ve kind of struggled let’s say with these games. So, you know, most people say, “Yeah, absolutely. You’re going to need him and it’s going to be a struggle.” But with the Watson Lucette, I mean, you sign the guy for a reason. You’re signing him because you kind of really need him to spell WY from time to time. You may want to give WY a couple of days off, maybe a couple of gay hills. Rene is a viable starter. He showed his he showed his with Boston. He came to San Antonio in the first few games, in the first preseason games as well. He showed what he could do. So I’m absolutely 100% confident in Cornet. The only time I want you to see this kind of happen, Jeff, is if you load me, be sure you got Kelly Olen on Jeremy Sohan back. Oleg provides that backup to Karnet that you desperately need. Again, Olen’s not going to be a little beater, but he does provide that stable backup backup position for, you know, Wendy and yeah, I mean, get some load management. You got Corvan and Olen. Not to mention Gumball is a little I mean you’re pretty set right. You can give him a couple of days off if need be. Yeah, exactly. But you know overall again if we boil it down looking at the preseason, looking at the makeup of the roster, some of the roster moves made in the offseason, the drafts that they did trade last year for Fox. Defensively, again, nobody should be surprised. Uh everybody’s acting like they like, “Oh, where did this first come from?” from, you know, as the other day I got an email from uh from a uh one of the the the betting wagers, you know, like your your bet on lines and MGM, one of those kids, and they’re like, “Oh, no. This is our stat. These are the projected surprise teams of the NBA, and they have the Spurs on there.” And my first reaction was like, “Why are you surprised though with just Wimi coming back should be enough to make you say, “Okay, yeah, this team’s going to be legit. This team, oh yeah, you know what? Steph Castle, rookie of the year last year. Look what he did. Yeah. Oh yeah, they they acquired last year uh Jiren Fox and again this off seasonason. Yeah, they drafted Harper. Oh, they got Carter Bryant. Oh yeah. You know, why are we acting like they’re surprised? I don’t think anybody should be surprised. What would surprise me is if they lose focus, they get complacent, they rest on the laurels, all those cliches because we seen little hints of that, especially versus I was there for that Brooklyn game. I saw a 26-point lead evaporate like that. It turned into a deficit. We saw a hint of it uh versus Toronto. Again, another 20point lead just boom, gone down to single digits. That’s the only thing I’ll be surprised of if they let that seep in. I don’t think they will. Mitch Johnson is definitely not going to let them do that. So, all in all, nobody should be surprised. I know Rudy isn’t. I’m not. But what about you? Uh, let us know on X. You let Rudy know on X at Sweep the League. You let me know on X at Jeff G. Spurs zone. But you know what is surprising? Or maybe not Rudy. The disrespect. The disrespect. Did NBA.com’s recent power rankings disrespect the Spurs? Let’s talk about that coming up next right here on Locked on Spurs. We got to get a picture of you, you know, over that overlay and then play theun done as a as a bumper there. Rudy, we got to have a picture of you. He is Rudy Capos of Sweep the League and the Sports Answer. Follow him on next at Sweep the League. We’re talking about your silver and black. And you know, I guess history could be repeating itself. When the Spurs were winning titles, we had the big three error. When Pop was in his prime, this team was just constantly winning. How many times do we hear this Spurs fans, what about us? What about us? Y’all are forgetting us. Where’s the respect? Look how much we’re getting disrespected. Could that cycle be starting again this year? Maybe too early to tell, but there might be an early sign that yeah, it could be happening. NBA.com recently released their power rankings, and if you’re thinking the Spurs landed at one, no, they gave that nod to the Thunder. Fine, they’re the champs. Get it. What about two? Nah. All right. They they cannot fall behind as far as top three, right? Because they’re undefeated. 4-0. Nope. Not top three. All right. They got to be top five, right? Not top five. NBA.com power rankings have the Spurs as the eighth. Yes, still top 10, but number eight in their power rankings. Rudy, I got to say, when I first saw it, I felt a little disrespected for the guys in Silver Black. I think they should have been at minimal top five. What do you think? Uh, if you’re looking at it as a fan perspective, yeah, you should be upset. They’d rather be tamper. Again, this list came out pretty it’s week one of the NBA season. I wouldn’t even let it get too far ahead of, you know, emotions and everything, but out of the four games that they’re basing it off, GIF, only one was against a true powerhouse in Dallas. So, I will I’ll say I’m not agreeing with NBA.com. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not agreeing with them. So, I don’t need the eight from lockdown fans. I agree they should be in the top five at least me and them in the Lakers. Obviously, they’re going to put the Lakers up there. The Warriors are going to put up there. The Nerves haven’t looked good. So, I can kind of maybe push for the Warriors. The Knicks deserve to be up there. So, maybe at six or so. I agree with that part. But again, you know, you’ve got game against the Pelicans, the Brooklyn book Brooklyn Nets, and then the Raptors. Three teams that are not exactly going to be bamboo season. So, maybe NBA.com’s looking at fact, okay, they really only played one technically good team. So, we’re going to wait another week to see how the Spurs do. Don’t take a disrespect too much. You shouldn’t be used to it in Spurs fans. We all are used to it. It’s a late season. You Hey, you gen 15 spots in that NBA.com ranking. So, be happy about that to start the season. I got it here, Rudy. I was looking them up right now. So, ahead of the Spurs at number seven of the Timberwolves, ahead of them are the Lakers at six. They’ll drop Cavs. Cavs at five. I agree with I’ll say that the Knicks at four. Okay. And then three is the Nuggets and number two are the Warriors. They’re um jump from 8 to2. Uh uh no, I I just look at the Spurs real fast. Did they jump or fall? Let’s see real quick here. 15. Yeah, they they they had a big leap. They went Yeah, they went from 15 to eight, but Hm. Yeah, it could be strength the schedule right now that the NBA power rankers are looking at right now. Like, okay, Brooklyn, yay. Dallas, no Kyrie, leaning on a rookie as your franchise player, you know, whatnot. But they’re going to be tested this Thursday. I think this Thursday, say what you will about the Heat, but as long as that guy, Coach Spose on that sideline, he’s going to get the best out of his his players. I really I’m I’m interested to seeing how they’ll go against a a spoileled le Miami Heat and they’re not afraid to play bully ball. So I think we’re going to see kind of a early small test for the Spurs. On paper they should beat Miami, but I think Miami is not a team that’s not going to back down. I think this is going to be kind of a light test for the Spurs. What do you think? So Dallas was their first test, but I think Miami is their first true test. I do agree. Yeah, man. He’s got, you know, one of the legends of the game and our exposure coaching that were always going to have Bio. I mean, excuse me, Hanhawk guys, they’ve got the they’ve got the fight to make it very difficult for Victor Romania to be successful. This is a game where you’re going to have to see those guys we mentioned earlier. Some Agna, you know, Waters, maybe even Barnes just kind of get back into that rhythm, get back in that flow. I would really expect maybe a really big game from Harper or Castle right now. Yeah. When it comes to Miami, don’t be shocked if Victor does struggle. It’s a possibility that he may. Like I said, the size of Miami and Spolstra is just a guru at basketball. So, they’re going to really plan to kind of keep get there at bay. And this is where these other guys are around him. And it’s why you surround Victor with a lot of talent is because these guys would be able to pick up the slap. Hopefully get that win for the Spurs. But yeah, this is their fruit their first true test as the Miami Heat. Yeah. Yeah. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Luke Cornet is magically off the injury reserve list for that game versus Miami because they’re going to need help because Miami is a big team. They’re a big boy team and uh they’re g they’re they’re they’re look they’re not gonna be shy to push Victor. I wouldn’t be surprised if they really test Victor’s uh you know added size frame you know uh you know with Kow Wear. By the way, every time I see Khal Wear it, it looks like I’m looking at Wimy’s clone, right? Doesn’t it look like Wimies on the court? A little bit a little bit, right? A little bit. But all in all, that should be a good game. I personally think the NBA.com power rankings disrespect the Spurs. I think they should have leapt over the Timberwolves, leapt over the the Lakers. Uh but well, whatever. Sex Rudy said it is early. He is Rudy Coff. Go ahead. I was going to say in fairness after Edwards just went down with an injury. He’ll be in a couple weeks. At the time this came out, I think Luca was still playing. So those teams are going to drop. The Spurs are going to rise in a match. So like I said, it’s just a weak one though. Oh, no. Look at Look at Rudy trying to calm me down. Trying to calm me down here on lockdown spurs. I’m flipping my table right now. Rudy, tell us about the sports answer. Sports answer.
