Celtics IMPLODE in WORST Quarter Ever | Rebounding CRISIS Reaches NEW LOW

Celtics put up literally their worst quarter ever, but still gave themselves a chance to win. Probably because Ugo was awesome. Still, it’s a loss to the Knicks. We’re talking about it on this bonus lockdown Celtics podcast. Uh-huh. Be ready. It’s who else could it be? What they going to say now? Screaming like JT coral. We kept the madness every game, every practice. Prime time Deon D White on the sideline rece how it started. Rais how we finish locked on Celtics by home of the winners. Hey, welcome back to the Lockown Celtics podcast right here on the Lockdown Podcast Network where it’s your team every day. Your team is the Boston Celtics and I’ll talk about them every Monday through Friday. even on a Saturday when they play on a Friday night, even when they look awful for a lot of that game. I’m here for you with a free podcast. It’s available everywhere. It’s on YouTube. So, get into the comments section. Join your fellow everydayers as we I guess right now we’re in commiseration stage when it comes to the Celtics. I’m John Carales, Bwitriter for Boston Sports Journal. I’ve written a couple books about the team. I’ve also been covering this team for about 20 years now. We’re talking about a loss to the Knicks. It goes down as a 10595 loss. They were down as as much as 24. I’ll save the best for last. I’m going to save Ugo Gonzalez for for the end. I don’t want to go too crazy about this game. Uh because it was, you know, a a tough loss. But we got to start with the worst literally the worst quarter ever. And I know people will often literally use the term literally wrong, but I’m literally using it correctly because this was literally the worst quarter in terms of point differential that the Celtics have ever played. They were outscored 42 to4. That deficit is the greatest deficit ever in a quarter for the Boston Celtics. It happened in the second quarter where everything everything went wrong for the Celtics. They gave up runs. This is crazy. 110, 170, and 120 in three separate instances. They gave up those runs in the second quarter. I’ve never heard of a team giving up 11, 17, and 120 runs. Uh Celtics shot four of 18. They had six turnovers for 13 Knicks points. They allowed seven offensive rebounds. They outscored 12 nothing on second chance points. The Knicks shot 50%. They went to the line 12 times and shot 100% at the line. That was as bad a second quarter. A as bad a quarter as you’re ever literally ever going to see. And it came after a pretty decent first quarter. The Celtics were up eight after the first quarter. Uh they they looked good. The pace was being pushed. They you know they were hitting a few shots. Everything looked decent in the first quarter. Uh we had Jaylen Brown eight points. Uh five points for Nimish Kada. He you know was doing his thing. Simons came in and looked good. I was like man his shot just looked smooth. Tillman was doing a couple of things. Gonzalez was starting to show like this was this was a really interesting first quarter. Joe Mazulum did a hockey sub or a full line change and it was all working. The Knicks were not hitting anything. They were shooting terribly. It was looking good. Even though they had a bunch of offensive rebounds, they couldn’t capitalize. Second quarter shots started to fall. The offensive rebounds came and the Celtics started to get deflated. They started to play frantic. It was it was kind of all over the place. And the the second quarter uh like I said 42 to4 you I don’t know how you even get there to 42 to4 the Celtics shot so horribly. Pritchard was having and I’ll get to the I’ll get to the individual stuff but Pritchard White Jaylen Brown after the first quarter was you know struggled. Everybody struggled. Uh, meanwhile, the Knicks just got going. And the rebounding is is a major a major problem. And this is getting to a point here where like I’m going to have to keep talking about it. Uh, at some point I am going to have to let it go because the rebounding is it’s just going to be bad the whole time. This quote from Joe tells you a lot about where where they are. And he said talking about the rebounding said we have to combat it in three ways. We have to be as physical as we can rebounding. We have to get offensive rebounds. We have to force more turnovers. So it’s a three thing approach to getting that. If you look at those four categories now they switch to four. Defensive rebounding, offensive rebounding, forcing turnovers and not turning it over. We probably have a better chance of controlling three out of the four of those with our effort and ability to control those things. So, we got to fight for those. In that is an admission that well, we’re going to control three of the four of those things. Well, offensive rebounding, that’s one. Forcing turnovers, I think, is two. Not turning the ball over is three. Defensive rebounding is something that they’re not going to be able to control for a couple of reasons. Obviously, they don’t have the personnel. They’re not they’re not big. They’re going to get outrebounded simply because they are going to reach for a ball and somebody bigger is going to also reach for the ball and the bigger guy with longer arms is going to get it. That is going to happen. And there’s nothing the Celtics can do about it other than change who they have on their team and bring in guys who can be bigger and taller, who are bigger and taller and can grab those rebounds. So that’s that’s just not going to change. But they also play this very aggressive defensive style where guys are going for steals and it’s going to put them out of position and there’s going to be rotations and guys are going to have to make up for that kind of it’ll put a guy out of position. So somebody has to step up. You’re leaving something that’s going to allow a lot more three-pointers than we’re used to seeing the Celtics give up. They’re going to they’re just going to allow those. and they’re going to give up offensive rebounds no matter what. The Celtics, I’ve said this before, I’ll probably say it again. I don’t want to go too crazy about it, but it just is the fact of the matter. They have to get to a point where they’re just not the worst rebounding team. The numbers from this game are just so ridiculous. The Celtics defensive rebounding percentage was 54.5 in this game. They rebounded 54 and a half% of the available rebounds. So that’s, you know, half almost, you know, like a little bit more than half. Last year, the worst team in the NBA rebounding was at 67.8. 8. So that is a 13% difference between where the Celtics were in this particular game and what the worst rebounding team averaged. Now the difference between the worst team and the best team last year was 5.6%. So the Celtics were more than twice as bad as is the gap between the worst and the best. like they were twice more than twice as far damn almost three times as far uh away from the bottom as the bottom was from the top last year. That’s just how bad the rebounding was. They have to get to 70%. They have to. And number one in the league was 73 and a half. Tom Westerm and I have talked about this. The the numbers sound bad, but if the Celtics had just if they had just rebounded at the worst rate from last year, that 67.8%, the Celtics would have gotten uh seven more rebounds in this game. That just being the worst from last year. seven more defensive rebounds, which is a few putbacks that don’t go in. And then then the Celtics give themselves a chance. If they were at 70%, they would have gotten another one. So, eight, just being a mediocre defensive rebounding team, they would have gotten seven, eight, nine defensive rebounds that they didn’t get in this game. when you take away some of those second chance points. Now, obviously the game flow would be different, but the Celtics probably wouldn’t have been down 20 plus in that second quarter. Who knows how that second quarter goes if they grab one of those uh offensive rebounds that they gave up with the 12 120 deficit. If you change if you take that away and say, “Okay, it’s it’s a six, you know, or four point.” Like now it’s now it’s a little bit more manageable. You go into the half, you have a terrible quarter, and you go into the half, you’re down 14 or 12 or 10 instead of 20. You come out in the third quarter and the Celtics came out right away on a NATO run. Now all of a sudden you’re you’re right there. You’re within a couple of baskets. Celix went on an 80 run to cut it to mid- teens and you’re like, “Okay, this this doesn’t really move the needle for me.” So I don’t want to keep harping all year long because it’s going to get old and boring. But the rebounding was so stark in this game. The rebounding issue was so so in yourrface in this game. They have no choice but to talk about it. Let’s talk about the other guys. Derek White, Jaylen Brown, Pton Pritchard before we get to Uvo Gonzalez. We’ll do that when I come back. Today’s show is brought to you by Robin Hood. Your ambition just minutes match. They are seven days a week covering every game in the association. So check that out. And then Locked on NBA has all the big stories on their afternoon show Monday through Friday. Catch me on game night on Wednesdays with Jake Madison. This is a rare bad game for Derek White. I just kind of it’s a little stunning. You don’t normally get Derek White in the bad game category. 15 points on five of 18 shooting. Well, three of 11. Uh he’s he’s really struggling to find that three-point touch. Uh did he have four rebounds? Did have four assists, a steal, a block, just one turnover. So, um it just felt like the misses were weighing on Derek. felt like he just was affected by the missed shots. And Pritchard, same thing. Two of 10, one of seven from three. It’s two regular season games where he’s one of seven from three. In fact, if you roll in his preseason, he’s he was 0 for8 in the final preseason game. He’s seven of 35 over three preseason games and the two regular season games. It’s 20% shooting. So Pritchard has come into this season, no matter what he’s played, preseason or the two regular season games, Pritchard is shooting terribly. Now look, he’s Peyton Pritchard, he’s going to do other things. All of these guys are trying to do other things, right? But they’re clearly being affected. So Pritchard, eight points, did have five rebounds, six assists, the team best. And Jaylen Brown, I’m going to lump him into it. I think the numbers, the raw numbers, 23 points, four rebounds, three assists look okay, a steal, but seven turnovers. And some of the turnovers were just awful. He just looked it looked bad. It looked like the last game of the the the playoffs against the Knicks last year. It started to to look that bad. So, you didn’t get a great game from him, from Pritchard, from White. And Jaylen admitted it. He said, “We’re out of sync.” He said, “I have to be better rebounding.” I think he understands. I think the Celtics do understand that, you know, they are saying the right things after these games. They know what they have to do. It’s just, like I’ve said, the preeason was such garbage that this is essentially the preseason. This is their first chance against live competition to really see where they stack up. and they don’t stack up well against the best of the best. Like the and the Knicks tried the the Celtics defense stepped up in the second half. In fact, for three quarters, the Celtics did have did did outplay the Knicks really. The the first, third, and fourth quarters, the Celtics won by a combined 18 points. Not that that means much because the second quarter was so awful, but the Celtics can look at that because you’re trying to stack up good things and say, “We started out great. We came back in the second half great.” There’s obviously the, you know, second half caveat where Knicks came out the things look so bad for the Celtics in the second quarter that the Knicks probably came out a little slow, a little soft, and didn’t step it back up until the fourth quarter. But the Celtics can say, “Hey, look, we 18-point lead. We just had to play better that one quarter. We would have been fine.” Um, but it’s it’s more than just playing better than that in that one quarter. Um, it’s the Celtics have to be on point with all of their non-rebounding. Well, I wouldn’t even say that because offensive rebounding as part of the rebounding, but you got to go in there and you got to grab offensive rebounds, which the Celtics didn’t do, right? The Celtics didn’t grab offensive rebounds in this game. They they turned the Knicks over 20 times, which is good, but they only got 16 points off of those turnovers, which is bad. Uh being outscored in fast break points 15-2 and not getting those two until the very end, basically, that’s that’s a problem. The Celtics, they they were playing fast to start the game. I thought the pace was really really good to start the game and then it just went away because of everything. I think they just got demoralized uh with the rebounding stuff. But 20 turnovers, but they only got 16 points. The Celtics had 16 turnovers and gave up 23 points off of those. So, they have to be better at those other things. You the offense has to be clicking. If the shots aren’t falling, the Celtics are going to struggle to win anyway. But if the shots aren’t falling and you’re only getting barely h, you know, a little bit more than half of your defensive rebounds, you you that’s that’s a that’s always going to be a loss. And as I’ve said all summer long, basically this Celtics team very much looks like a team that’s going to really not they’re not good enough to beat the good teams. And New York is one of the good teams. They’re too good to to lose to the bad teams. And we’ll see them play the bad teams. And I think they’ll look great against those bad teams, the middle tier teams. And I think Philly is probably in that mix in the middle tier, kind of depending on on who’s healthy and not, but those are the games. Those are going to be the swing games. So, Sunday becomes an important game. Sunday against the the Pistons, 3:30 in the afternoon. Pistons are in that middle tier. They’re not quite a good team yet. They’re trying to be a good team. That’s a big game. If the Celtics if lose that game on Sunday, that 0 and7 that I’m talking about, that 0 and7 that I that people were giving me crap about saying where’s your faith and all of that stuff, it becomes a very real possibility. I think everybody sees what I was talking about when I said the beginning is going to be a struggle that the seller’s going to have have trouble with the beginning of the schedule. I know people some people didn’t want to believe me and I know that I’m taking I it’s not the victory lap that I want to take but it’s obvious the when the Celt the Celtics have to have like Joe said three of those four things they have to have those go right and they didn’t in this one. What did go right is Ugo Gonzalez and two things about Ugo. Number one, he was really good in this game. He the defensive effort hit a couple of nice lefty finishes. Um he he really was pushing. Now he got the rookie whistle. I think there were a couple of calls that were iffy. So um and and but you know he puts himself in position to get those foul calls sometimes but couple of steals, four rebounds. Um didn’t hit a three. He was 0 for two. But you know clean up some of the fouls, clean up some of those things. I think being 19 years old and on that stage, he he’s he’s good. I I like the question after the game where it’s like and I think it is cool. It’s kind of interesting to have that uh experience of hey, you know, Madison Square Garden and your first your first like taste of NBA life, like NBA your NBA actions on the road at MSG, that’s a great atmosphere and all of that stuff. And I tweeted that like that that that’s got to be cool. He wasn’t in a headsp space to say that was cool. But he also said, this is great. He’s like, I’ve played in some, you know, pretty crazy situations, you know, and I think if if you want to just go Google European basket crowds, European basketball crowds, you’ll understand. Like he’s he’s probably sitting there going like, “What’s what’s the big deal with MSG?” When you look at these crowds, like they got indoor fireworks. It’s crazy. They chant the whole game. They’re on their feet jumping the whole game. It’s crazy the atmosphere over there. But he he’s here. He’s at MSG. He he played pretty well. Was a a plus seven in a game they lost by 10 and they were down by 20. They were down 24. He’s a plus seven. So, first things first, Ugo played great. Second thing about Ugo is I don’t want to overreact to this simply because all I care about with Gonzalez is his development. All I care about is his development. I do not care if he helps the Celtics win a couple of games. This is not the season for me to care about. Oh, this guy might help you win a couple and this guy might Oh, they might s I don’t care. Oh, great. The selfies won 46 games. Maybe they won a first round playoff series. This is not going to be a deep playoff run. I mean, it it is possible that if Jason Tatum comes back and he looks great and and certain things come together over and maybe there’s a trade in the mid-season, we can revisit this later, but right now I don’t give a damn. I do not give a damn about Ugo like, oh wow, he can get this these minutes and maybe he can help the Celtics. All I care about is his development. Now, I don’t know where his development will be best. It could be never touching the G-League. It could be exclusively playing in the G-League. I don’t know which the Celtics will determine is best. Maybe it’s a mix. I do not want to look at this game and say, “Oh, well, now he’s in the rotation and forget about me. I’m not saying send him to Maine. I’m not say what I’m saying is let’s not rule out whatever the Celtics determine is the best developmental plan for him because it’s not about this year. It’s about next year or the year after and all of that. I think I’ve said this before on this podcast. I think Ula Gonzalez is going to be a starter for the Boston Celtics at some point. Not this season, but at some point during his rookie contract, he will become a starter for the Boston Celtics. I’m on record of saying that this game I think is part of the evidence that pile of evidence I think this is great if the Celtics say developmentally he’s far enough like he’s learned enough the could they could just say Real Madrid was his developmental that was his G-League now he’s here and he’s ready to parti to to participate and and learn and fail at the NBA level then great if that’s what they determine absolutely great totally fine with that. I’m going to defer to the Celtics on this one because all I want is Ugo to play basketball and get better. I do not want Gonzalez sitting there getting DNPs just because of circumstances. Speaking of DMPS, side note, I don’t know why Josh Minard didn’t play. Weird decision in all of this he did not play. Feels like he did something wrong and was getting punished for this game. I don’t know. But regardless, um, Ugo, I just I think he’s going to be great. I want him to develop and be great, whatever that is. So, we can make the strong argument that this shows that he’s ready to play at the NBA level, then great. But if the Celtics send him to Maine, I don’t want anybody being like, “Why is he going to Maine? He should be No, no, no. Send him to Maine. Give him the 30. give him a 38 minutes a game, you know, G of experience. Like that’s totally fine with me. So, but very impressed with him. Uh I think I think he’s he’s got a lot he’s got a lot to give this sport, a lot to give this team over his career. That’s going to be it for this podcast. Um I just don’t want to go too deep in it is what it is, right? Like now they’re on to Detroit and it’s an important game. Just I if I kind of want to see it come together a little bit and not have not they’ve given up two 42-point quarters. How about a sign of progress? Do not give a 42-point quarter to the Pistons. Can you do that? That would be great. If they don’t do that, then they might win that game. And if they win that game, maybe they win another one on this road trip. And it’s not a two and five is a big big difference from 0 and seven. I do not want to see them start on a sevename losing streak. But it’s if they lose on Sunday, that’s that might be that that’s possible. We’ll see that. I’ll be here after the game on Sunday, so we’ll talk about it then. So, make sure you’re subscribed. 1. I've still not given up. Losing game 1 to a rookie who played an absolute blinder on his first game in the league. Then to only lose by 10 in a game against the former 2nd place eastern conference team where we had our worst quarter in history. We knew it was going to be an uphill battle, things could be a hell of a lot worse than this.

  2. After pre-season I had hope that the team could be competitive and be a 6 or 7 seed, but after these two games I now realize the team is in the lottery pool.

  3. Not shocked, I expected another beat down like the sixers game, it’s just going to get worse, Is it possible to trade Pritchard n Hauser, Queta, Simon’s, Tillman and get KP and Dru holiday back!

  4. 🤷🏽‍♂️I’ve been waiting all summer for Celtics Season to restart and I’m just knowing there would be a game on BOSTON SPORTS CHANNEL last night after work but I couldn’t find the game on any of the usual Basketball Networks 🤦🏽‍♂️.. 😒WTF 🤬

  5. I don’t think I’d go with Pritchard. Anfernee Simons is proven starter even if it was a losing team. He’s getting the short end of stick when he could be averaging close to 20pts giving White + JB more space offensively.

Pritchard and Hauser on bench. Simons + Boucher starters.

    Simons, White, JB, Boucher, Queta.

Pritchard, Hauser, Minott, Garza then Gonzales / Walsh / Scheyerman / Tillman depending.

  6. It took the new look ime Celtics 20 games to find their stride. They started 3-5 and then 10-10 before the run to the finals. Everyone was questioning Ime and jt and JB and going crazy. Then.. they felt silly.

That team was implementing a new system and it took 20 games. This team has a new system, new roles, new players and has to scheme around talent voids… let’s give them that 20 games before we jump to any conclusions.

We are watching a baby learn to walk – gonna fall a lot before running.

PSA – this isn’t a coach comparison it’s simply perspective that it takes time for even the best teams to adjust to change

  7. everyone was crying about PP should start and look what he is doing. been saying he was trash all summer as a starter but you and all of these other fans were saying he is better than simons and he is not! put his ass back on the bench. and if (if) was a spliff……..

  8. Jaylen looked like he was playing for the mafia. Horrendous, esp for a top-paid guy in the league. Can't DRIBBLE! Bad nights from White and Pritchard. They'll come around, relax. Hauser did his job, as did Queta and Tillman. Boucher & Hugo played great! Missed Minott, guess he had the night off after one game? He could've helped. Scheierman and Walsh were ghosts. Joe's playing with lineups and had something in the second half of the 1st quarter but switched it up and we never got it back until later in the 4th, not coincidentally when Hugo got back in the game. But when the BMOC, Brown, plays like THAT, it's impossible to wiin.

  9. Did the C's really give themselves a chance to win. This could be the worst C's team EVER ASSEMBLED in my 40 yrs of being a BOSTON CELTICS fan. Giving up 42 pt qtrs twice already is a BAD BAD SIGN that I see plus the REBOUNDING is a MAJOR MAJOR ISSUE . What happened to playing fast but only having scored only 2 fast break pts???? Well if you can't rebound you can't run uptempo. The top 3 players need to be better PP, DW, and JB ALL 3 WERE TERRIBLE!!! Why not no Minot as well?? C's collapsed in 2nd qtr and didn't play with any URGENCY to fully come back. It's only game 2 but if they continue to play like this all I can say is that 10-72 is on the table.

  10. Tatum comes back by March and Joe changes the lineup to the following and I’m all in on a real run: Derrick, Hugo, JB, Sam/Boucher, Queta. Bench: Payton, Simons, Minott, Boucher/Sam, X/Garza. Move Hugo to the bench when Tatum is back.

  11. Their best offensive lineup can't defend, and they're best defensive lineup can't score. As constructed, their rebounding will be a huge weakness all year. Let's keep the 'Tank for Dybantsa' train going!!

  12. There’s no arena in the U.S. that’s as supportive and intense as the ones in Europe. In the U.S., arenas often rely on artificial noise to create energy. Fans go to games as if they’re attending any other show, and that’s sad. I hope Boston fans, who are great, could really learn something from European basketball.

I also hope the NBA doesn’t ruin European basketball by trying to change it. Hugo has tremendous potential, and anyone who knows European basketball recognized that when Brad Stevens drafted him. He’s been one of the best European players in his age group since he was 15. Unfortunately, he didn’t get much playing time with Real Madrid last year, and this season he needs to be on the floor, wherever that may be. Hugo is a player who thrives when challenged, and I hope the coaches understand that.

I’d like people to notice three things Hugo does exceptionally well: his intensity, how quickly he reverses the ball, leading to plays like White’s corner three, which came from great ball movement , and how wide and fast he runs the floor in transition. That’s Real Madrid basketball, and the Celtics should learn from it.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Hugo and the Celtics grow this year. They don’t need to peak right now, and that’s actually a big plus. 💚🤍

  13. Denial is a river in Egypt. The Knicks missed like 20 quality open shots 😅. Defense had nothing to do with most of the misses in my opinion. Celtics outplayed them three quarters 😅. Points don't show the dominant performance of this game.

  14. This season is reminiscence of the 2021-22 season. Rob just started, we tried integrating Denis. I need JB to get comfortable shooting. His focus on wanting to drive and put pressure on the defense is nice but everyone knows and are prepared for it. Need to run some simple pnr and fire away. Also PP and White not hitting shots makes that space look so small.

  15. We have problems at the point guard position. Only White and Pritchard can play there, so they shouldn't coincide on the court. Pritchard should go back to six man. And Hugo should be the first reserve for Simons or Brown.

  16. Pritchard needs to go back to being the 6th man. Start Simons with Brown, White, Bouchard and Queta. When you get rid of several starters, you cannot also change the mindset of two other players.

  17. these guys are used to playing with less pressure on them and more space because they had Tatum, Jrue, Al, Kristaps, Kornet – it's a lot harder to make your shots when the defense can shut down the few key players because there's nobody else that is a real threat – and when they don't have as good of spacing, and a good enough screening, and being on the backfoot because the other team is controlling the boards and the game

  18. This team won’t even make the playoffs ! Unbelievable how the Celtics team built over last 5 years was dismantled ! Celtics won’t see a championship for a long time 😊

  19. Knicks fan here and it pains me to say you guys are honestly in a very chill spot. You guys have a lot of lowkey talent and will next year. This is just gonna be an off year then yall get JT back next year and you pretty much go right back to a playoff team lol

  20. The Celtics are predicated around stopping the three and shooting the three and of then play with 6-7 guys. They had the ball to one one man to put on a dribbling exhibition, usually the highest paid guys who run the team. At least Horford and kornet boxed out and Tatum could jump. Their centers are un athletic and led foot. Tillman epitomizes the Celtics proble up front. Too short and too slow. Queata shows signs but he’s just a backup and is alwys a step behind. White and Prichard have become a bust at scoring becuse neither is as good as we thought they were and both won’t penetrate. They obviously look good in practice, cause they are playing against eachother. Brown is shameful. Not because he’s bad, but because he’s one of the top paid players in the league and plays like college ball hog. Maxilla just ain’t that good without Tatum being the head ball hog who got hurt because he played way too much his time in Boston. But we’ll have a higher draft pick. And then there is Tillman. Why is he even on the team ?

  21. The Celtics have a team that can’t ply above the rim without a running start. They have no toughness, no legit size and no athleticism up from. They get pushed around like a bunch of backups. Cause literally that’s all the entire team is made of, back ups. Only white is a ligit started.
