Is Nick Schmaltz the next top priority for the Mammoth? What deal would you like to see him get?

  1. His consistency makes me believe he is not a top priority. The fact it took potentially being out of a contract to pop off is a red flag. Don’t get me wrong I hope he stays consistent and with the team, but he won’t be getting a Cooley contract.

  2. I think you def balance their age, versus the length of time left on their deal and cap space. I’d like to think they’d extend him. This team seems to be gelling and improving and it makes no sense to lose a piece, unless it’s to strengthen like we did picking up JJ while losing Doan and Bjugstad.

  3. I bet that unless they can get him at a good number they let him walk. I bet that they would prefer to move Daniil But, Tij Iginla, or Cole Beaudoin up to the roster next year. Schmaltz isn’t 30 yet and I like him a lot, I guess I just look at the pipeline of talent we have at the forward position would make him more easily able to part with.

  4. Definitely a priority, although with how well he is playing to start the season, I’m guessing both sides will want to see if he can sustain it for the majority of a season. I would expect us to make a competitive offer but not blow the bank given our rising young talent and his inconsistencies over the years. Something in the range of 4-5 years with an AAV around $6.5 – 8M seems reasonable.

  5. Always gotta watch those ‘Oh shit, it’s my contact year?!’ Love Schmaltz, but I think I love him at only a slight raise.

  6. Schmaltz should be a priority because he has experience for the new guys, and is proving his value.

We need to keep him and then focus on bringing in Butte and Iginla and some young blood.
